DONNY BENÉT Announces Live Experience A virtual live performance of his new record Mr Experience Saturday 21 November Tickets on sale now

by the partae November 1, 2020
written by the partae

2020:

Mr Experience is released.

Global pandemic occurs – Live music shows and touring stops.

How do we bring the live experience of Mr Experience to a worldwide audience?

Today, Australia’s self-proclaimed “adult entertainer” Donny Benét announces Live Experience – a virtual live performance of his new record Mr Experience, taking place on Saturday 21 November in the comfort of your own home, wherever you are around the globe. To prevent you from being restricted by timezones, you will be able to watch the stream on this date at your convenience, however, Benét suggests tuning in at 8PM local time for optimal viewing.

Accompanied by his Show Band, Donny Benét has enlisted director Alex Smith and his collection of vintage video cameras and editing equipment, alongside a talented production crew, to capture the adventurous and exciting experience of a Donny Benét live show.

Tickets are on sale now via Eventbrite at a price of your choosing (pay as you can).

After humble lo-fi beginnings in the Australian art-pop underground, Donny Benét has expanded his cult-like following across the globe with a resonant array of danceable repertoire dealing with love and affection. Mr Experience marks a new chapter informed by a wealth of musical and personal development.

Featuring the singles ‘Mr Experience’, ‘Girl Of My Dreams’, ‘Second Dinner’ & ‘Moving Up’, Donny Benét envisions Mr Experience as a soundtrack to a dinner party set in the late 1980s. Since its release, it has been met with worldwide acclaim, including glowing reviews, features with Billboard, NME and Monocle, and has recently received nominations for ‘Best Adult Contemporary Album’ & ‘Best Cover Art’ at the 2020 ARIA Awards taking place in November.

A message from Donny Benét on Live Experience
In February I was fortunate enough perform in US/Canada on one of my most successful tours. It was so great to finally meet and connect with my US/Canadian audiences and I was very much looking forward to returning later in the year to tour Mr Experience. In March 2020 we had just begun rehearsing the band to prepare for the Mr Experience European tour in May and was looking forward to returning to Europe again to perform the new songs. Lockdown soon followed and we had to press pause after only one rehearsal together.
Like everything this year plans were made, changed, changed again and postponed.I wanted to stay connected to my audience throughout the early weeks of lockdown and decided to host The D Zone online every week until the new album was released. I had put so much love into writing Mr Experience and wanted to present it in the highest quality setting for audiences rather than a series of streamed shows.

I always had the idea of filming a live performance for posterity and generally being something on my wish list. As a huge music nerd I’ve spent endless hours trawling the internet watching live performances of my favourite artists and I always loved the idea that one day there would be a high-end production of a Donny Benét performance filmed and viewed online for years to come!

With the prospect of not being able to leave Australia for a long time this seemed like the perfect opportunity to indulge in this concept and create a piece of art with longevity. I approached the director Alex Smith to help bring this concept into reality. I always enjoy working with Alex – we both seem to operate within an extremely fine line of subtleties and niche references. Alex utilised his collection of vintage video cameras and editing equipment, alongside a talented production crew, to capture the adventurous and exciting experience of a Donny Benét live show.

My fantastic band lived up to all expectations with their warmth and musicality and for this special occasion we were able to invite two backing singers.

I’m ecstatic with how it turned out and it’s been quite satisfying to accomplish this project in an extremely dire time for live music. I hope you enjoy watching this concert!

–  Donny Benét

“Benét makes bonafide jams.”  – KEXP

“There’s a warmth to Donny Benét’s fifth album that rages with the way things are right now. As people turn to the comforting blanket of the music they grew up with to make a little sense of a world that simply doesn’t, ‘Mr. Experience’ takes the past and twists it into something modern yet classic.” – NME

“Benét’s quirky approach shows us that he knows how to charm listeners so that they suspend disbelief for the duration of the song and just enjoy the moment. Mr Experience offers feelgood respite from these strange and uncertain times.” – The Music

Alternative rap duo Craterface today share their sophomore release, the confessional mixtape BURN AFTER LISTENING. Listen HERE.

Rarely do titles come more bodacious or attention-grabbing than that of Craterface’s second mixtape. Its three words embody the all-caps catharsis of the duo’s deeply personal second full-length. BURN AFTER LISTENING is an instruction, a promise, a statement of intent that says here in your hands, you hold a piece of art so potent, so all-consuming, so loaded with confession and packed with every fibre of the artists’ souls that it becomes impossible to wash off. The only appropriate response is to sit, reflect and, finally, burn after listening.

Craterface wouldn’t have it any other way. The longtime creative partnership of rapper baby bruh and producer/vocalist Taki Local simply don’t do things in half-measures, pouring the entirety of themselves into their music, allowing listeners to piece through their brand of impassioned alt-hip hop and take what they will. “It’s so easy for us”, Taki Local says of the creative connection that exists between them; “I can’t imagine doing it with anyone else”, baby bruh concludes. The fervent devotion they inspire is second only to the group’s own commitment to leave-everything-out-there sincerity, egoless creative expression and authenticity.

Together they reflect, “This tape is the culmination of an emotional year, but at its core is about the power of spirituality and the effect that has on people who consider themselves just cogs in the wheel. The fact the creation of this tape took us both on a genuine, authentic spiritual path is more valuable than anything else, and we will never forget the strength it holds in that regard. Listen to this tape at whatever volume you please, and do so in the sun.”

BURN AFTER LISTENING is in some ways, a quintessential sophomore release: challenging and yet more rewarding than its predecessor, more spiritually fulfilling for its creators. Where Craterface’s debut mixtape DON’T BE CONFUSED was a smorgasbord of pop-adjacedent hip hop, its follow-up is a more concentrated effort at honing in a particular aesthetic and style. This time gravitating towards lo-fi, introspective New York rap, gritty mid-2000s hip hop and the anarchy of hyper-pop. At the same time, this release expands the duo’s creative universe outwards, drawing a cast of hand-selected artists into their strictly-in-house collaborative studios, including Art Rap Health Clinic tour-mates Shady Nasty on second single ‘ORIGAMI’ and Rhode Island producer-rapper Jair on opening track, ‘JAIR MALEEK DELGADO’.

Musing on themes of religion, spirituality, heartbreak, self-improvement and the cyclical nature of life, BURN AFTER LISTENING centres the confessional nature of baby bruh’s lyricism, while Taki Local’s production matches that fragmented energy with a boundarylessness mania reminiscent of SOPHIE or JPEGMAFIA. Already a singular act in the Australian music landscape, BURN AFTER LISTENING represents Craterface’s contribution to a new strand of hip hop in this country, one which is decidedly more insular, introspective and emotionally, creatively and stylistically innovative too.

The Resignators Drop New Single Bluebird Tattoo

by the partae November 1, 2020
written by the partae

Today, Melbourne ska punk band The Resignators drop their new single Bluebird Tattoo. The song tells the story of Melbourne’s most unique music and fashion movement of the 1970’s, the Sharpies.

LISTEN TO BLUEBIRD TATTOO

The Sharpies were a multicultural group of “pre-punks” (localised to Australia and primarily Melbourne) that embraced a very specific style of fashion, haircut and dancing. They heralded the beginning of Aussie Pub Rock, and despite negative press due to their tendency to rumble between rival Sharpie gangs, they lasted over a decade and contributed to the rise of careers of AC/DC, Lobby Loyde and the Coloured Balls, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs.

One of the most common icons for the Sharpies was a bluebird tattoo, the song tells the story of how many years later, two Sharpie lovers remember each other fondly every time the see their bluebird tattoos. When they danced they could make it fly!

Bluebird Tattoo sees The Resignators at the peak of their form combining ska punk with rock on what is without doubt one of the bands finest songs to date. Blistering guitars, thumping bass, melodious keyboards, driving drums, a military like horn section capped off with one the most anthemic choruses from a ska punk band you’ll hear this year.

Bluebird Tattoo is a more balanced blending of ska punk and rock without becoming too much of one or the other. The Resignators’ take on ska is heavy and they tend toward raucous rock with something of a ska twist, but most of all they make you dance!

Serbian Star REBLOK debuts on Heldeep Records with slamming ‘PLAYER EP’ Out now via Heldeep Records

by the partae November 1, 2020
written by the partae

DJ and producer REBLOK has already proven to be a multigenre track releasing machine with hits such as ‘Smile’, ‘Toxicity’ and ‘Stop the World’. Goran Paradjina, known as REBLOK, is now ready to make his debut on Heldeep Records with his ‘PLAYER EP’.

The track kicks off with raw vocals accompanied by a rugged bass vibration, conveying a tremendous urge to dance to it. The breakdowns excel with a head-snapping beat filled with ravet synth chords and percussive switches. With some haunting keys and its energetic undertone, no more is needed for this banger to create a fierce atmosphere. Blurring the definitions of genres, this no-nonsense infectious stomper will work the dancefloor in your living room to its hardest!

Ever since exploding into the scene with his Beatport Top 10 track ‘Smile’, REBLOK has been receiving support from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac and Danny Howerd, as well as dance music heavyweights David Guetta, Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler and Diplo among others. The Croation-born DJ and producer is ready to make an indelible mark on the dance industry.

About Heldeep Records:

International superstar Oliver Heldens founded Heldeep Records to create a platform to showcase the new music of budding producers after receiving 1000s of demos. Since 2014, Heldeep Records has grown from a modest imprint into a fully-fledged label, featuring respected mainstay acts like ALOK, Chocolate Puma, & Dada Life as well as hosting stages at leading festivals across the globe like Tomorrowland, Mysteryland, Electric Forest, Spring Awakening Music Festival and South West Four. Heldeep artists are showcased weekly on Heldeep Radio, which is syndicated across 91 stations, in 66 countries and reaches 118 million people a week.

Where are you currently based? We are currently based in North London. How did Théa Marie form? I began my music carrier as a singer songwriter simply called ‘Théa’. As I started studying in the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London, I realised I needed a band to portray my songs exactly how I wanted. One thing lead to the next, my flatmate Julianna became my drummer and our friend Peter became my guitarist. They both add a ‘rock style’ to my soul/jazzy compositions, which I absolutely love. Two years later, we created Théa Marie - a soul rock trio from London.  Your band members are based around the world, how does Théa Marie operate as a band? Yes, Julianna is Franco English, Peter is American and I am Franco American! It’s crazy to think we all just randomly met in our uni in London. We are very good at getting the job done and concentrating on our music. We operate very well together because we are first of all friends and have the same work ethic.  For rehearsals, I will bring a new song, sing and play it on the guitar and we’ll all just jam on it and feed off of different ideas.  You released an album a few months ago, what influenced the sound and songwriting? Some songs on the album were written about five years ago, while others were written two years ago. They all express the emotions I used to have like homesickness, loneliness, falling in love for the first time… This is why the album is called ’THEN’ - emotions of the past. The songwriting was influenced by folk artists like James Vincent McMorrow and soul artists like Amy Winehouse.  How did you go about writing the music? I find a progression of chords first, then melodies and lastly lyrics. Usually, my best melodies and lyrics will be written late at night. For some reason, the emotions that I’ve felt throughout the day become more intense in the evening… I don’t know why. In a way it’s great because it means I have more inspiration for my writing.  How did you approach the recording process? So we recorded the album in two different sessions: one in December of 2018 and one in April of 2019 - we took our time. I kept all the stems of the album for a long time because I wanted the perfect person to mix the tracks - someone who understood the atmosphere I was going for. Luckily, I spent the London lockdown with my flatmates and Jimmy, a brilliant sound engineer and producer. He was nice enough to mix the whole album within 2 weeks - amazing! He now has his own mixing/mastering/production studio called Vakant Studios, you should check him out!  Where did you record? We recorded in the recording studio of my university.  Please tell us about your latest collaboration: I wrote ‘Settle Down, Love’ with The Dunwells, two brothers from Leeds. We met in 2018 during one of my school’s events and have kept in touch since. During our songwriting session, I was very anxious by my life. I was explaining to them that I wished I could calm my mind and tell it that everything will be okay. That’s how the idea of ‘Settle Down, Love’ started. We personified my anxious mind and built a conversation with it trying to settle it down.  As soon as we finished writing the song, we knew we had to release it. We knew that so many people would connect with it.  Who are you listening to at the moment? I am still listening to James Vincent McMorrow, I love all of his albums. I recently discovered Lucy McWilliams - her sound is so groovy, chill and elegant. What do you like to do away from music? I love finding new places to hang out at. When I’m free, I love walking around London and finding cute places I can come back to later.  What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021? We’re preparing a new set up for our live sets: I play bass instead of guitar, and Julianna and Peter do backing vocals while they play their instruments. It’s fun to change it up and it adds more spice to our authenticity and style of music.  Favourite food and place to hangout? Théa: Favorite food is the Bufala pizza from the Salusbury Food Store in Queens Park. Favorite place is at the top of Alexandra Park on a clear day.  Julianna: Favourite food is the veggie breakfast at La Diva Kilburn and favourite place to hang out is on Primrose Hill on a warm evening. Peter: Favourite food is a vegetable red curry from Spicy Basil - Kilburn's hidden culinary gem, and favourite place to hang out is Hampstead Heath on a sunny day. Thea Marie

He now has his own mixing/mastering/production studio called Vakant Studios, you should check him out!

Where did you record?

We recorded in the recording studio of my university.

Please tell us about your latest collaboration:

I wrote ‘Settle Down, Love’ with The Dunwells, two brothers from Leeds.

I recently discovered Lucy McWilliams – her sound is so groovy, chill and elegant.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love finding new places to hang out at. When I’m free, I love walking around London and finding cute places I can come back to later.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

Peter: Favourite food is a vegetable red curry from Spicy Basil – Kilburn’s hidden culinary gem, and favourite place to hang out is Hampstead Heath on a sunny day.

Where are you currently based?

At the moment I’m based out of Delta, BC, Canada.

How did you first start playing music?

I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. My first memory is at about three years old just belting Christmas carols at the top of my lungs. As I got a bit older I’d listen to albums front to back and would try to mimic the singers exactly – learning every word and inflection. I used to be shy when it came to singing in front of an audience, but close friends continued to push me to give it a go for so many years. After a few years playing open mics in university, I started to want to take things more seriously. That brings us to about five years ago now when I started teaching myself to play guitar so I could write my own songs and accompany myself. It’s a never-ending journey of discovery and learning!

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

Covid has presented challenges for me like it has everyone, but when it started to impact things back in March I decided to take advantage of the time off to further commit myself to music and creativity. I already had these recordings in the bag (for the upcoming EP, ‘Some Thoughts I’ve Had’), but really wanted music videos for them. So I picked up my iPhone, did a bunch of research on filmmaking and video editing, and the rest is history. I’ve got three of four videos done so far and can’t wait to share them with the world!

How has your sound changed since your first release in 2016?

Oh man. Drastically. My first album is country/rock/folk, and this one is jazz/soul/R&B. Couldn’t be more different!

What inspired these changes in your sound?

Part of it comes from my knowledge on guitar. I’ve still got a long way to go to get my chops up to snuff, but at this point I can play a bit more than some basic C, G, and D chords. I also find that I’m heavily influenced by my surroundings and life experiences at the time. In one particular rough patch of my life a couple years back, I was churning out alt, grunge-style songs (that have yet to make it out into the world). Last year, I moved into a community house with some unreal musicians and artists who sent me deeper down the jazz, R&B, soul, and gospel rabbit hole, and I’m still exploring those sounds and riding that wave. There is a LOT to explore within those genres! And these recordings reflect a lot of those influences.

Please tell us what inspired your song ‘Love is’ and how you went about writing it:

I had a recording session booked with the musicians you hear on the album. Leading up to that session, I had a number of newer songs I’d written that I really liked. Three of them felt like this cohesive unit, but the rest almost felt like they could be the start of a completely different album. So the week before the session, I started writing furiously to come up with something that felt like the final piece of the puzzle.

At the time I was in a relationship that I felt wasn’t right for me, but I didn’t want to admit it. ‘Love Is’ became a reverie of a love I hoped to find in the future, while reminiscing on some beautiful and challenging moments from loves past.

Where and when did you record and who with?

I was living in Victoria, BC, and booked a gig opening for Zach Kleisinger – an amazing singer-songwriter from Vancouver. I loved his set, and I remember thinking his backing band was incredible. Turns out, we all hit it off after the show and I made my way to Vancouver a few weeks later to record with Zach’s backing band. Harry Tudor played drums, Colin Weeks was on bass and backup vocals, and Yitzy Holton-Hinshaw played lead guitar and keys and was our sound engineer and producer. We recorded everything live-off-the-floor in a small bedroom in Yitzy’s home (otherwise known as Flavour Studios). In three days we figured out the arrangements, barely slept, and laughed a lot. It was hands down the most fun recording experience I’ve had to date.

What programs/instruments did you use to record?

Production was minimal on this record as I wanted everything to feel raw and to capture the emotion of the songs. I sang and played rhythm guitar, Yitzy sat in on lead guitar and keys, Colin slayed the bass and Harry nailed the drums.

How did you approach the recording process?

In the past, I’ve been guilty of perfectionism and paralysis by analysis. With these songs, I felt like we all had such great chemistry as a band and things seemed to flow effortlessly. We decided not to use a click track which helped to throw perfectionism out the window right off the bat. Truth be told, I actually love hearing a flaw here and there in a recording – it feels emotional and human and it’s fascinating. So instead of overanalyzing and second-guessing things, I decided to go with the flow and it honestly came together fairly quickly. That’s not to say that we didn’t work hard – I’m pretty sure I was delusional by the end of the third recording day. But I wanted to trust my gut on these. Playing the songs felt right and I liked what I was hearing, so I wanted to keep things fun and lighthearted without bringing any stress into it.

You’ll be releasing a music video for ‘Love Is’ on November 23, how did the video concept come about?

I just wanted something super positive, uplifting, and wholesome for this video. At this time especially, I felt like I needed to make something that could bring a bit of joy to people’s lives. So I decided I wanted some footage in the style of a home video to showcase different types of love – young parents with their babies, a senior couple, newlyweds, and a man with his dogs. Because of Covid I was limited to the number of people I could collaborate with, but at the same time – I’d moved in with my folks in my hometown when the pandemic hit. So the cool thing about this video, for me, is that everyone that appears in it is either a family member or a close childhood friend who I may have lost contact with at one time or another. It felt very personal and close to my heart.

Where did you film? And how was the experience?

All of the footage was shot at parks, or in people’s backyards in the Vancouver area. And filming was an absolute blast! It was great to reconnect with old friends, and to include my friends and family in a part of my musical world.

What do you like to do away from music?

I’m an avid runner and cyclist, but I also love hiking, longboarding, camping, and basically anything outdoorsy. Since the pandemic hit I’ve taken up mountain biking which is scary and fun. I dabble in some acting and love to draw, and am pretty much always on the hunt for the next creative project.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Eloise! She’s been my soundtrack for 2019 and 2020. Also Ella Fitzgerald, Blossom Dearie, Samm Henshaw, Ruston Kelly, Yebba, H.E.R., Chris Stapleton, James Taylor . . . I could go on.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

I’ll be releasing three more songs to complete the full ‘Some Thoughts I’ve Had’ EP, and the music videos that I made in isolation. I also wrote a super upbeat pop song with my friend/fellow musician Alexander Ferguson in recent months. It’s totally different from anything I’ve ever done, and we’ll be releasing that a few months into 2021, too!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Pasta. Every day all day. Every different type. I could literally eat pasta for the rest of my life. Favourite place to hang out? If we’re talking restaurants and we’re on the subject of food then I’m gonna go with Tapa Bar in Victoria, BC. The bacon wrapped almond stuffed dates are a killer and their sangria is perfection.

written by the partae
We’re excited to introduce ‘Leisure Coast Label Series’, a new initiative presented by Volumes in collaboration with ourselves and fellow South Coast record labels Farmer & the Owl, Spunk Records and Third Eye Stimuli.

We’ve just announced six new shows across Sydney (Oxford Art Factory) and Wollongong (La La La’s) from November 9 to November 11 as part of the series, featuring an all-star line-up of artists from our local roster, including Elmo Aoyama (who will be playing her very first Australian show), Nick Griffith, Greenwave Beth and Solo Career. They’ll be performing alongside the wonderful FLOWERTRUCK, Big White, Tees, The Oogars, e4444e and more.

For full line-ups and tickets, check our Facebook event page. Due to Covid restrictions, capacity at each show is limited – secure your tickets now and spread the word before they’re gone!

VIEW EVENTS
This year we’ve released new records from Nick Griffith, Elmo Aoyama, Gum Country and Cotillon, singles from Navy Gangs and NOCON, plus the Stay Inside: Songs from the Great Indoors compilation where we released a song (or two) per day throughout April – and there’s more to come! We’re excited to soon introduce stunning French artist Laure Briard to Australia, announce an exciting new local signing, plus share a hot new single from NOCON before the year comes to an end.

Check out our top five picks from this year below, or click here to hear the best of Dinosaur City Records 2020 so far.

1. NOCON ‘HOAX’
NOCON is the new Melbourne-based art-punk duo comprised of Jamie Timony (These New South Whales/MOSSY) and Jake O’Brien. A follow-up to skuzzy punk debut ‘AGAG’, ‘HOAX’ was recorded and produced remotely by Jamie and Jake during a winter in isolation. The track sticks to the parameters established with ‘AGAG’ (bendy guitars, driving bass), while leaning further into the band’s influences from trap, emo and cloud rap.

Learn more about NOCON via this interview which just went live on Deafen County, and follow them on Instagram to stay up-to-date with show announcements and new releases.

2. NAVY GANGS ‘SOMETIMES’
This August, New York-via-Nebraska rockers Navy Gangs dropped a sweet new single, ‘Sometimes’, which was written and recorded by Matt Tillwick during quarantine in Manhattan. Matt says of the new track, “While I am trying to be healthy, safe and sane while maintaining income, friendships and relationships, I’m feeling pretty stressed and drained by it all. ‘Sometimes’ is a reflection of these feelings.”
LISTEN TO ‘SOMETIMES’
3. ELMO AOYAMA ‘SPELLS’
Elmo Aoyama, best-known for her contributions to much-loved Sydney band Big White, has quickly made a name for herself with her new solo project and recently released EP ‘Spells’. An ambitious debut spanning dreamy synth ballads and industrial-pop anthems, singles ‘Spells’, ’21’ and ‘Summertime’ saw rotation adds on FBi Radio, Triple R and 3RTR, spins on KEXP, triple j and 2SER and praise from the likes of NME, Bandcamp, Deafen County, Weirdo Wasteland and Happy Magazine.

Check out ‘Spells’ now if you haven’t already, and don’t miss out on tickets to her debut Sydney show with FLOWERTRUCK and e4444e at Oxford Art Factory on Wednesday November 11.

LISTEN TO ‘SPELLS’
4. GUM COUNTRY ‘SOMEWHERE’
We discovered LA-via-Vancouver duo Gum Country when they played with Greenwave Beth at a bowling club in Eagle Rock, LA last March (feels like a lifetime ago now!). We released their debut album ‘Somewhere’ on bright pink vinyl and limited edition cassette in June and hope to tour the band here in Australia when Covid restrictions permit. ‘Somewhere’ received a stellar 7.2 review from Pitchfork, was Bandcamp’s Album of the Day, topped the KEXP charts and was warmly embraced by community radio here in Australia. The record saw praise from our favourite media outlets including Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, Northern Transmissions, The Line of Best Fit and Deafen County among others, and was added to Spotify’s mammoth ‘New Music Friday’, ‘Fresh Finds: Indie’ and ‘New Punk Tracks’ playlists. Go Gum Country!

There’s a high chance you’ve already heard tracks from ‘Somewhere’ on the radio, Spotify, Bandcamp or elsewhere. If not, check it out below!

LISTEN TO ‘SOMEWHERE’
5. NICK GRIFFITH ‘7AM’
triple j’s Dave Ruby Howe called Nick Griffith’s contribution to Sydney’s music scene over the years and over many projects “demi-god level good”, and he’s not wrong! Nick’s released music under Big White, Bored Shorts, Dream Dog, Bourgeoise Earth and more, with debut solo album ‘7am’ drawing praise from the likes of The Fader, The Music, Tone Deaf and Happy Magazine among others, a handful of plays on triple j and double j, plus feature album at FBi Radio and 2SER. We just received news it’s been nominated for the Australian Music Prize, too. We’ve still got a handful of Nick Griffith cassettes available on Bandcamp, plus you can stream 7am on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp and everywhere else!

Nick will be playing a full-band show in Sydney for the very first time on Wednesday November 11 as part of the Leisure Coast Label Series. Get your tickets here.

MOURN New album Self Worth is out now!

Praise for MOURN

“Mourn is taking a different approach to these times” – Billboard

“Serrated, infectiously melodic” – Stereogum

“Early-aughts alt at its finest” – Jezebel

“Crackles with energy and passion as it confronts existential anxiety through joyful rocking out” – PopMatters

“90s emo-core realness that feels jagged and beautiful” – REMEZCLA

“MOURN are at their most provocative” – CLOUT

Today, Barcelona trio MOURN release their album Self Worth, via Captured Tracks / Remote Control Records.

Adversity does not incite the best feelings: frustration, anger, fear, anxiety – nothing unusual for today’s world. The members of MOURN know quite a bit about these setbacks, but a latent belief persists within: the negative will eventually become positive. It’s the belief of facing and overcoming a problem. To come out reinforced: the wonder of resilience. It’s the belief of what they are worth, whatever people say. It’s the name they chose for their new album: Self Worth. MOURN is an enclave of post-teens dealing with the dilemmas of adult life. “This album gave us what we needed: self-worth, the desire to go forward, to love ourselves, with everything, with the good and bad. This album empowers us.”

During the album campaign MOURN have released two out of four behind the scenes video diaries of the making of Self Worth. Check out for a more indepth glimpse into their album making process here.

A lot’s changed for the Catalan three-piece since the release of Sorpresa Familia, their boisterous 2018 record, that was praised by Pitchfork complementing their “newfound maturity of songcraft without sacrificing youthful energy” and NPR saying “equal parts joy and rage.” They’ve undergone a lineup change (drummer Antonio Postius left the band in 2019) and done a fair amount of growing up. As a result, they don’t feel as angry as they did on Sorpresa Familia – their new music is brighter, borne of a more peaceful, collaborative creative process. The band isn’t the same as when they formed. The world isn’t either. MOURN grew up, and that’s evident in the songs that make up Self Worth. Their melodies – energetic and captivating – venture into less level grounds, and their lyrics show their newfound readiness to tackle issues of a different weight and size.

Take a ticket to the world of The Lathums, a place of tall tales and wild rides mapped out by new, four-track EP: GHOSTS

The Lathums – Ghost EP
Feat. 1) I See Your Ghost 2) Corporation Street 3) All My Life 4) Foolish Parley
OUT NOW on Island Records
Pirates, cobblestones and ghosts swirl in unlikely harmony around the heads of indie heroes, The Lathums as they release their four-track, Ghosts EP, featuring acclaimed singles, I See Your Ghost and All My Life – OUT NOW on Island Records. A window opens once more into the mind of bookworm frontman, Alex Moore, with four-tracks that dive soul deep, swerve towards the surreal and pull wheelies of exuberant joy to leave deep tracks in the dirt of 2020 heading towards a bright 2021.

The EP concludes a hectic month for the band, following their return to live performance last week, streaming a special, one-off gig, Live From Blackpool Tower and performing I See Your Ghost for a national TV audience on Later… With Jools Holland.

Picking up lows to become highs, the story of July single, All My Life, the inspirational first song written by Moore as a sensitive and world-weary teen, echoes that of previously unreleased EP track, Corporation Street. Complete with Smiths-esque yodelling and a lilting, beachside ska-lite sound, the lyrics walk the happy/sad line walked by great writers who can point out the first ray of sunshine on the darkest of days. The Lathums’ wry, poetic positivity is a light that can’t be put out.

Moore says: “I was in a beautiful town in Lancashire, leaving a family celebration and I glanced to one side on the way home and, just at that moment, the sunlight hit the top of this incredibly steep, narrow, cobbled street and beamed down off it. It stayed with me. It happened on Corporation Street.”

In times of strife it’s good to talk and Foolish Parley, the EP’s closer, draws on archaic customs of the high-seas and the calling of a traditional truce for negotiations between warring factions to take place. Cast across burbling rhythms with shards of reverb-laced guitar, the warm, analogue accents of 60’s beat classics echo around rapid fire vocal lines that paint evocative pictures of familiar discord.

Looking ahead to a hopeful New Year, The Lathums – formed of Moore (vocals/guitars), Scott Concepcion (lead guitars), Johnny Cunliffe (bass) and Ryan Durrans (drums) – look into a 2021 filled with sold out, landmark shows including dates at Manchester’s O2 Ritz and London’s Electric Ballroom, plus celebratory festival appearances, including Sound City and Neighbourhood Weekender. All confirmed UK and Ireland dates for The Lathums are:

The band has also confirmed a run of rescheduled support dates in 2021, travelling around the UK and Europe with Blossoms and are proud to be invited guests on Paul Weller’s rearranged tour.

Earlier this year, The Lathums announced their plans to cut just one, 7” copy of their cover of Northern Soul classic, The Snake. With no digital release or radio airplay planned, just one, winning ticket holder in an online raffle to support fan-led fund for the survival of Wigan Athletic will ever own the recording. To date, the fundraising effort has secured almost £4000.

The Lathums’ story began just two years ago with the band making swift graduation from Greater Manchester pubs to festival stages including Kendal Calling and Neighbourhood Weekender. The breathless pace at which their popularity has escalated is now being captured in upbeat recording sessions for their debut album at Parr Street Studios, Liverpool with producers, James Skelly and Chris Taylor.

Are you still based in Canberra?  Born and bred! Besides a brief stint living in London town back in 2006 (some cracking parties back then). Canberra is not a particularly big place, how’s the underground scene there? Canberra has always had a thriving, close knit underground scene since way before I was old enough to go out partying.  Unfortunately, I have personally witnessed the demise of nearly every single last left night club and festival venue in the city over the years due to a rapid rise in rental costs, liquor licencing costs and residential properties spreading too close to the last pockets of music venue hope - which of course comes with sound complaints. To top that off a global pandemic hit and we are left with just two last venues in the city that regularly offer electronic music. It’s a real shame to think that when I started Djing there were countless pumping nightclubs and late-night venues in Canberra and now we are left with nearly none at all. The positive side to this is that the ‘underground’ scene is building up and forming together stronger than ever with new ideas for the future. What’s it like trying to make a name for yourself in a place like that with deep house and breaks? I started Djing and dabbling in music production in way back in 2002 when I was still in high school. I have been fortunate enough to have held residencies, helped promote parties and have awesome friends who ran some of the best parties this town has ever had and still do. The scene was quite strong in Canberra in the early to late 2000’s, so I had many great festivals and late night venues to play at! The scene here has always been very open minded to different forms of electronica, so I find the vibe here less biased towards one genre to the other here than some other AUS cities tbh. How did you first start playing music and how did you evolve into electronic music? The first music I ever loved was The Prodigy’s ‘Music For the Jilted Generation’ when I was literally in primary school! I got into Gatecrasher style trance in my first year of high school. So I have basically had a love in electronic music since I knew about music. I started making tunes with Fruityloops v1 and have stuck to it till this day. There are a lot of breaks in your portfolio, where did they come from? It is an interesting story. I moved on from my passion of Trance music on to Progressive House and Techno in the early 2000’s. Then in early high school years I actually randomly won a crate of vinyl full of the entire Finger Lickin’ Records discography via a competition on the ‘In The Mix’ website. I didn’t even know I was in a competition! But I just got home from school one afternoon and there I was with all of the best Breakbeat the world had to offer at the time. This basically got me into Breaks and then as I was already into Progressive, it merged to become my real love of ‘Progressive Breaks’. I always wonder if I would have DJ’d and Produced so much Breaks if I never won that random crate? Which artists have been your biggest influences?  In reality, there are way too many to name through many genres, though I have to mention the big guns like: The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, John Digweed, Sasha, Nick Warren, Andy Page, Hybrid, Phil K, Hernan Cattaneo, Underworld. The list goes on but they have to be some major inspirers. What's been happening recently? Due to the pandemic, no DJ gigs besides the odd livestream and recordings on Mixcloud and select radio shows. Though lots of music production has been happening which is a plus. Oh and I got engaged! (Congratulations! - Anthony.) Any upcoming releases we should keep an eye out for? I have an EP coming out on ‘Late Night Music’ in November with two new originals ‘Distant Source’ and ‘Fargone’ with some fantastic remixes from Jamie Stevens, B-Tham, Kazuki and Tidy. I have had some great feedback on these tracks so far! It’s a fun EP as every track in the package is quite different so it makes for an exciting release. Do you prefer to DJ or play live? Djng is always fun and less stressful, but live shows which are much more rewarding. I aim to do much more live stuff after the pandemic. I also do a side project live show with Tidy under our name ‘Stact’ which has been the best fun I have ever had performing live. Its more of an experimental breaks/drum and bass/ idm project that we do completely live and improved on the spot with pallets of sounds, synths, vinyl and drum samples we have made. Basically, a live jam that never sounds the same twice. https://soundcloud.com/stact What are your top 3 plug-ins to use in the studio, and why? They change over time but at the moment I’m loving Gulfoss. It is a live eq that balances out the sounds on the fly as they play. It’s really smart AI in a simple interface. It does wonders to the mix. Native Instruments Guitar Rig has always been something I use on all sorts of sounds to re shape and texture. I use it in a much more subtle way than its designed for, but it really works for me. I’m also loving Pigments by Arturia at the moment also, it’s a really full textured synth. The Arturia range is amazing. Where can we hear you DJ? Do you have any future ambitions for your music? The last gig I was billed for was to warm up for Booka Shade in back March but that got cancelled due to the pandemic, so at the moment you can only hear me on various livestreams and radio shows that I will always announce on my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/fourthstate The future is shrouded in mystery at the moment. Is there anywhere you’d really love to play, or any labels you’d love to release on? I’d love to play at Rainbow Serpent festival for sure!  And my main goal is to support John Digweed one day and especially feature on his Transitions radio show.   Getting a release on Johns label Bedrock would be paramount. What do you like to do away from music? I love to get away from the electro-concrete jungle and head into real nature. camping, the beach, bushwalks etc. Who are you listening to at the moment? I’m always finding new tunes and shazaming ones I love in mixcloud and soundcloud sets of artists that I keep adding and following on those platforms. And I’ve been listening to John Digweeds Transitions radio show religiously every week for years and years now. What's planned for the remainder of 2020? Write more tunes, try and play at a real gig and get to the beach as often as I can. www.mixcloud.com/fourthstate www.soundcloud.com/fourthstate www.facebook.com/fourthstate Interviewer: Anthony Huttley
