Your new album Encore is out now, where and when did you record?

We recorded it in the restoring RCA A studio in Nashville Tennessee (where I live, as well) with my friend, Dave Cobb producing it. We did all of over 2017 but it was in sporadic bursts since we were on the road so frequently.

What or who has inspired the songwriting and sound of Encore?

We were very inspired by all sorts of classic and modern sounds but we had the intention of making every song have the ability to be played as the encore during a live performance.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

NPR mostly, Howard Stern, Travis Meadows, Foy Vance.

How did you first start playing music?

It came from singing in church as a child but when I was in my early teen years, I received a 4-track tape record and the fascination of making records is what ultimately maintained my interest in making music.

Encore features the singles All On My Mind and King For A Day. Encore is a strong mix of blues and soul, with a Nashville twist. Where did the blues and soul influences come from?

Probably growing up in Alabama.

 What programs/equipment do you use?

I’m all over the place when it comes to that. We use a mix of modern and vintage recording equipment. We track to tape but then dump to ProTools for quick work flow.

What do you enjoy most about playing music?

The community, be it other musician, engineers, songwriters, etc…. but the greatest is the community with the audience.

How do you prepare for each show?

I usually have dinner, do about 20 minutes of yoga, warm up the throat, listen to some loud music with the fellas, have some Jameson and then rock and roll.

Favourite food and place to hang out?

Usually Thai…

The bus.

RF Shannon Announces New Album “Trickster Blues,” Out 5/4, Premieres 1st SIngle “Cold Spell”

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae

RF Shannon, the desert blues band fronted by Shane Renfro, announced the release of their second album Trickster Blues, due out May 4 on Cosmic Dreamer Music. The record is their first since relocating from Austin to Los Angeles; its eight expansive tracks unfurl the band’s unique blend of dusky Western and spectral psychedelia. RF Shannon released the album’s first single “Cold Spell” via Brooklyn Vegan today, and Renfro shared the story behind the track:
It was cold outside, that wet-to-the bones Austin, TX cold. I was huddled around a space heater just playing that walk-up riff over and over. I was feeling elated and terrified. I had just told someone I loved them that had been my friend for many years, and she said she loved me back. Without saying too much, the situation was complicated.  We both knew we were on the cusp of something life-changing, but we both felt a lot of guilt and grief over it and wanted to handle the situation properly by letting it unfold naturally. So we just stepped out of each other’s lives briefly to figure our own hearts out. When it comes down to it, the song is about feeling like a cold person for interjecting into someone else’s fate, but also feeling like, maybe I am part of this person’s fate and this is how it’s supposed to be.
Trickster Blues is out May 4 on Cosmic Dreamer and is available for pre-order now.

2. I’m Only Dying
3. Cold Spell

5. Badlands
6. Black Madonna, So Divine
7. Trickster Blues
8. Silver Woman
MORE ON RF SHANNON:
On Trickster Blues, their new full length album for Cosmic Dreamer, RF Shannon take a drastic shift from the long form, pensive desert meditations of their previous record. “The process was a drastic shift from the one we took with Jaguar Palace and I was hooked. It was a blast all of the time. We kept a quick pace due to external circumstances via random or otherwise inevitable interruptions, so we learned to take what we could get. If a take was good, it was a keeper, we didn’t second guess it. In just four days we had demoed the majority of my new material and it just felt so right,” explains Shane Renfro, the mind behind RF Shannon.
Born out of natural and self-imposed boundaries, the final product is an album that lives in the sonic space between desert blues and old school R&B. At times heavy like a jackhammer while maintaining the velvety vocal deliveries of Renfro, Trickster Blues is an album that embraces the natural indecision surrounding the songwriting process and goes with its gut decision every step of the way. By working on the principal that if the first impression of a song is good enough at the moment then it is good enough to be the final product,  Trickster Blues paints a portrait of Renfro’s truth and his truth alone. “Maybe it’s a terrible mistake, maybe its’ better this way,” comments Renfro on the writing process. “I think that’s what this record will always mean to me. That’s kind of the Trickster in a way. Many different facets, but the name conjures a sort of pure whimsical mischief, a dose of raw wild impulse that reminds you to laugh at whatever it is thats happening.”
Demoed in four days in Marfa and recorded in two in Lockhart, Texas with the help of Jesse Woods and Will Patterson, the album is demanding in its immediacy while providing a raw and profound insight to the raw sonic & lyrical landscape Renfro & Co have crafted.

JO PASSED – Announce debut album ‘Their Prime’ out May 25th via Sub Pop Records – Share new single & video “MDM”

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae

On May 25th, Vancouver-based quartet Jo Passed will release Their Prime, their first full-length effort, on CD/LP/CS/DL worldwide through Sub Pop Records, with the exception of Canada through Royal Mountain Records.

The band have delivered an official video for Their Prime standout “MDM,” which was directed by Eleanor Petry. Bandleader Jo Hirabayashi says of the video, “something something, on my phone too much, something something, marshall mcluhan, something something, stanley kubrick, something something, the medium is the message, something something, ouch my insides.”

Jo has been part of the DIY music scene since his late teens. Initially it was just him and his high school best friend Elliot Langford against the world. They were the “freaky music weirdos” and they began their own band projects. Jo was pretty sure that it would be two of them riding into the sunset – or maybe the gloom – together. Personal circumstances and the phenomenon of the late 20s return of Saturn (for those who believe in astrology) got in the way. Their band Sprïng called it a day. That’s where the life of Jo Passed began. The idea of a band dynamic is far more appealing to Jo than solo projects, and the current incarnation of Jo Passed feels like its most robust yet.

Jo, along with his friend and drummer Mac Lawrie, moved across the country from Vancouver to Montreal. The two would play shows in Montreal and eventually tour the far right corner of North America. Upon Jo’s return to the west coast, multi-instrumentalist Bella Bébé officially joined the band in January of 2016, expanding Jo Passed from trio to a full quartet. Multimedia artist Megan-Magdalena Bourne began working with Jo Passed on a video project for the song “Rage” (from the Out EP). This creative partnership would eventually lead to her taking on the role of bassist for the band.

When not geeking out over The Zombies, or Nirvana, or Johann Sebastian Bach… Bella, Mac, and Megan have worked with Jo to realize the live experience of Their Prime, following two Jo Passed EPs titled Up and Out.

Jo Passed has scheduled a few spring club shows and festival dates before hitting the road later this year. Current highlights include shows with Hardly Art’s Dick Stusso (March 16th-24th) and an appearance at Treefort Music Festival in Boise (March 21st).

Tour dates:
Mar. 16 – Bozeman, MT – Labor Temple*
Mar. 18 – Denver, CO – Lost Lake Lounge*
Mar. 19 – Salt Lake City, UT – Kilby Court*
Mar. 21 – Boise, ID – Treefort Music Festival
Mar. 22 – Seattle, WA – Barboza*
Mar. 24 – Portland, OR – Crush House *
Apr. 14 – Victoria, BC – Lucky Bar
*w/ Dick Stusso

Preorders for Their Prime are now available through Sub Pop and Royal Mountain Records. LP purchases in North America through megamart.subpop.com and select independent retailers will receive the limited Loser edition on clear vinyl (while supplies last). There will also be a T- shirt design available. The limited Loser edition will also be available in the UK/EU on clear vinyl from select independent retailers (while supplies last).

Their Prime is a record about identity and the loss of time that happens as a direct consequence of being in the city with nowhere to rent, no time outside of employment and no realistic expectations to live up to. It encompasses that fear of being beyond the glory years, the most creatively fruitful period of one’s life. Those years were lost to contemporary struggles for working relationships, home, identity and space. “It’s me owning my worst nightmare,” he admits. “A lot of the Jo Passed project has been about confronting fears. I was afraid to move away from Vancouver to Montreal on my own. Afraid to leave musical relationships I had. Afraid to bare the full responsibility of a project. I’ve been putting out records and not ones anyone’s necessarily heard. Being open about those fears is a good way of dealing with them. You end up at this point where you hit 30 and you’re like, ‘Oh what happened? Am I done? Did I not activate my main creative energy?’ It’s a ridiculous idea but 30 feels a little like 1000 in rock n roll terms.” You can hear the frustrations and the jitters in the crashing loud-and-quiet motifs throughout the album’s twelve tracks, which offer up a patchwork quilt of sound, similar to Faust’s IV or Fugazi’s Red Medicine [read more at Sub Pop].

Their Prime tracklisting:
1. Left
2. MDM
3. Glass
4. Undemo
5. Facetook
6. Repair
7. R.I.P.
8. Millennial Trash Blues
9. You, Prime
10. Sold
11. Another Nowhere

otally Mild share video for ‘From One Another’; ‘Her’ album out now

New album Her out now on Chapter via Inertia Music

“A shining talisman for the heartbroken.”
Pitchfork“Engorged, engaged, empowered bedroom sulk music.”
The Guardian

“Sweet, harmony-rich, pointedly concise jangle-pop.”
NPR

“Skewed pop gold.”
Noisey

“An ethereal voice…lovely songs and just-so jangly arrangements.”
BrooklynVegan

In support of Her, the just-released album from Melbourne’s Totally Mild, the band have shared a video for their single ‘From One Another‘. The video debuted via Culture Collide who note, “the interplay of chiming guitars and Mitchell’s soothing voice brings a hypnotic quality to the song: it’s easy to lose yourself in ‘From One Another’, as the lush composition blurs the lines between verse, chorus, and bridge.”

‘From One Another’ was directed by Tobias Willis of KEWL Studios and he notes, “this clip, considered follow on from the previous for ‘Today Tonight‘, is drawing Liz’s character to a subtle close. As with the other clips we were aiming to keep the video in a more cinematic space and were referencing some of those classic one takes from 60’s & 70’s cinema. Throughout the tracking shot each character vignette has it’s own story exploring themes of loneliness, faith and friendship.” IndieShuffle have called the track “a sticky sweet indie pop gem that’s lush with infectious chords and vocals.”

Following an Australian tour with Perfume Genius, Totally Mild will be making their way to the US for slots at SXSW before coming home for a national album tour in May. Dates below.

JANELLE MONÁE TO RELEASE HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED THIRD ALBUM DIRTY COMPUTER ON FRIDAY APRIL 27TH

by the partae February 27, 2018
written by the partae

PRE-ORDER DIRTY COMPUTER NOW

ALL ALBUM PRE-ORDERS INCLUDE DOWNLOADS OF MAKE ME FEEL AND DJANGO JANE

GRAMMY®-nominated singer-songwriter/performer/producer/actress/activist, Janelle Monáe, has unveiled new details of her highly-anticipated third solo album project, Dirty Computer. The Emotion Picture includes an album and an accompanying narrative film. The album is available for pre-order beginning today and arrives everywhere Friday, April 27th. Release date for the accompanying narrative film to be announced soon.

Today, Monáe released two anthemic, electric singles, Make Me Feel and Django Jane with complementary music videos from the Emotion Picture.  All pre-orders include downloads of the premiere singles, both now available individually across all DSPs and streaming services.

Make Me Feel, directed by Alan Ferguson, captures the spirited, celebratory voice of Monáe as she affectionately nods to the ripe sounds surrounding the 1980’s music and dance revolution. Delivering electric vocals, pop hooks and confident, female-driven lyrics, Monáe brings the song to life in a vibrantly colored video highlighted by provocative silhouettes moving across the screen. Django Jane underscores Monáe’s ability to unleash her biting, unapologetic flow in a song that embraces contradictions as part of the beauty of individuality. The video was directed by Andrew Donoho and Chuck Lightning with additional vagina monologue footage directed by Lacey Duke. The song is a powerful black girl magic womanifesto that celebrates the strength of black women and black culture while addressing the trials and tribulations of identity in the 21st Century.  Both videos are streaming now on Monáe’s YouTube channel.

The Dirty Computer project was heralded with a very special teaser that premiered last weekend ahead of screenings of Marvel Studio’s history-making Black Panther. Notable outlets such as NPR, Billboard, and W Magazine, among others, praised Monae’s cinematic range and vision. The trailer is streaming now via YouTube and Monáe’s official website.

2016 saw Monáe embark on her film acting career with stellar performances in two milestone films, Hidden Figures and Moonlight; both films received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, with the latter winning the award at the 89th Academy Awards.

Deorro samples his son’s voice for “Offspring” [out on Dim Mak]

by the partae February 27, 2018
written by the partae

Deorro wreaks havoc on “Offspring,” an electro house crowd pleaser released on Dim Mak. Delivering his signature Melbourne bounce sound, the track features supercharged synths and a tremendous big room drop. “Offspring” is also aptly named: Deorro samples his son’s voice, lending the release emotional significance. The hard-hitting track is the California native’s first single of the new year and arrives as Deorro joins select dates on Steve Aoki‘s Kolony US Tour.

American producer Deorro is the perfect example of magnetic dynamism in music production. His impressive discography includes a myriad of original tracks, from his early hits “Yee” and “Five Hours” to last year’s “Rise and Shine,” as well as collaborations/remixes with Chuckie, Axwell, Krewella, Laidback Luke, Carnage, Diplo and more. Last year, he took listeners on the ultimate journey with his incredibly successful full-length album Good Evening, a 24-track pilgrimage that showcased many versions of Deorro‘s style. “It’s more than an introduction to a creative mind, it’s a story of sound and feeling,” quoted Billboardof the album. His prowess behind the decks has earned him premier spots at some of the world’s largest festivals and clubs, like Coachella, Ultra Music Festival, Lights OFF, and Electrobeach. Now with a renowned debut album under his belt and more new music on the way, the future is looking very bright indeed for Deorro.

Deorro is joining Dim Mak label head Steve Aoki as a special guest on his North American Kolony Tour this winter, performing in Austin, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Purchase tickets here and see below for Deorro‘s full tour schedule:

The success of ‘So Far Away’ has barely gotten the chance to cool down while David Guetta and Martin Garrix collaborate again on ‘Like I Do’, this time also with Brooks. The track showcases a blend of progressive house and pure pop combined with beautiful vocals. Both have teased the track during shows all over the world the past couple of weeks and today it is finally available at all digital service providers.

LISTEN HERE
It’s known that David and Martin are really good friends and love to make music together. Here’s what both of them had to say about ‘Like I Do’. David Guetta: ”When we hit the studio we were already working on several tracks. After we saw the great response on So Far Away we thought f*** it we will release another track together straight away.”

Martin Garrix: ”David is a legend. I have a lot of respect for him as an artist and I’m very happy we were able to release another track together with the amazing Brooks who I have worked with on other records before. I think he’s one of the most talented producers out there.”

The release of ‘Like I Do’ is accompanied by an official lyric video.

Previous collaboration, So Far Away, peaked at #18 on the Spotify charts and at #21 on iTunes and acquired millions of streams as well as more than 56 million views on the official music video.

HACHIKU share new video for ‘Murray’s Lullaby’

by the partae February 23, 2018
written by the partae

Hachiku have today shared a steamy new video for latest single ‘Murray’s Lullaby,‘ out now viaMilk! Records / Remote Control Records. Having just returned from a sold out tour of the Europe and U.K. opening for Jen Cloher, you can catch them heating up a stage in celebration of the single’s launch on Friday March 2nd at the John Curtin Hotel in Melbourne

Ever wondered what it’s like to wear silk pyjamas and socks in a sauna? Hachiku’s Anika Ostendorfdoes just that in their new video for ‘Murray’s Lullaby,‘ which is slick in every other meaning apart from ‘cool.’ Set within the dripping wet walls of a sauna radiating at 52 degrees, Anika gradually, uncomfortably succumbs to the heat of her own perspiration. Soon joined by her bandmates, the video dives, pore-first, into a world of sweat and hot air, and is the most fun you can have in a sauna without passing out.

It’s not all fun and flame though, as Anika explains, “Jessie, Georgia and Simon are your semi-normal sauna visitors (if you ignore the chest shaving) while I am almost invisible to them and slowly melting away in the background. We are in one room together but might as well be on separate planets. I like how (director) Julia managed to symbolise and capture the agony of a long distance relationship and combine it with a subtle sense of humour that makes it all a little bit more bearable.”

Hachiku is the brainchild of 23 year old German songwriter and producer Anika Ostendorf, who records her home-made dream pop from whichever bedroom she is currently inhabiting. ‘Murray’s Lullaby’ was written and recorded in regional Queensland while Ostendorf was completing 3 months of farm work – a requirement for her Australian visa. While it was a busy creative time, it was a difficult one personally. The single marks the first time Ostendorf has collaborated with a mix engineer, enlisting the talents of Tim Shiel (Double J, Gotye).

Since the release of Hachiku’s self-titled debut EP in 2017 through Milk! Records, Ostendorf found a home and 4 piece band in Melbourne. A residency at the Tote last year saw their dance card fill up in 2017, playing shows with Aldous Harding, Japanese Breakfast, Camp Cope and Fazerdaze as well as their first national tour with Saskwatch.

PARQUET COURTS

Announce new album Wide Awake!

Share new single ‘Almost Had To Start A Fight / In And Out Of Patience’

Parquet Courts are pleased to announce their fifth album, Wide Awake! will be released on May 18th via Rough Trade Records / Remote Control.

Wide Awake! is a groundbreaking work, an album about independence and individuality but also about collectivity and communitarianism. Love is at its center. There’s also a freshness here, a breaking of new territory that’s a testament to the group’s restless spirit.

Part of this could be attributed to the fact that Wide Awake! was produced by Brian Burton, better known as Danger Mouse, but it’s also simply a triumph of songwriting. “The ethos behind every Parquet Courts record is that there needs to be change for the better, and the best way to tackle that is to step out of one’s comfort zone,” guitarist/singer A Savage says of the unlikely pairing. “I personally liked the fact that I was writing a record that indebted to punk and funk, and Brian’s a pop producer who’s made some very polished records. I liked that it didn’t make sense.” It was Danger Mouse, an admirer of Parquet Courts, who originally reached out to them, presenting them with just the opportunity to stretch themselves that they were hoping for.

The songs, written by Savage and Austin Brown but elevated to even greater heights by the dynamic rhythmic propulsion of Max Savage (drums) and Sean Yeaton (bass), are filled with their traditional punk rock passion, as well as a lyrical tenderness. The record reflects a burgeoning confidence in the band’s exploration of new ideas in a hi-fi context. For his part, Savage was determined not to make another ballad heavy record like the band’s 2016 Human Performance. “I needed an outlet for the side of me that feels emotions like joy, rage, silliness and anger,” he says. They looked to play on the duality between rage and glee like the bands Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, and Black Flag. “All those bands make me want to dance and that’s what I want people to do when they hear our record,” adds Savage. For Brown, death and love were the biggest influences. Brown has never been so vulnerable on a Parquet Courtsrecord, and the band, for all their ferocity, has never played so movingly; it’s a prime example of Brown“writing songs I’ve been wanting to write but never had the courage.”

For the two primary songwriters, Wide Awake! represents the duality of coping and confrontation. “In such a hateful era of culture, we stand in opposition to that — and to the nihilism used to cope with that — with ideas of passion and love,” says Brown. For Savage, it comes back to the deceptively complex goal of making people want to dance, powering the body for resistance through a combination of groove, joy, and indignation, “expressing anger constructively but without trying to accommodate anyone.”

THE MEN share new single “Killed Someone”. Album ‘Drift’ due March 2nd via Sacred Bones! London show announced

by the partae February 21, 2018
written by the partae

The Men are sharing the final single from their upcoming LP, Drift before its release on March 2nd via Sacred Bones Records.

“Killed Someone” harks back to the “Leave Home” or “Open Your Heart” era of the band with a breakneck pace and huge fuzzed-out riffs that put that band on the map to begin with.

Drift is the seventh full-length by NYC rock polymaths The Men, and it marks their tenth year as a band. The band’s last album, the self-released Devil Music, was the sound of a band who had been through hell hitting reset and looking to their roots to rediscover themselves. On Drift, The Men return to their longtime label Sacred Bones Records and explore the openness that Devil Music helped them find.

The immediately evident result of that exploration is the experimental quality of much of the material on Drift. Songwriters Mark Perro and Nick Chiericozzi chase their muses down a few dozen thrilling rabbit-holes over the course of the album’s nine tracks. The songs on Drift veer in a number of directions, but notably, almost none of them feature a prominent electric guitar. The lone exception, “Killed Someone,” is a rowdy riff-rocker, worthy of the finest moments of the band’s now-classic Leave Home and Open Your Heart albums. The rest of the album drives down stranger highways. “Secret Light” is an improvisation based on an old piano riff of Perro’s. “Maybe I’m Crazy” is a synth-driven dancefloor stomper for long after last call.

The album was recorded to 2″ tape with Travis Harrison (Guided by Voices) at Serious Business Studios in Brooklyn. A whole pile of instruments was involved — synths, strings, sax, steel, harmonica, tape loops, on top of the usual guitar, bass, and drums. Unlike recent releases from The Men, there aren’t many overdubs on Drift — a reflection of the personalities of its makers becoming less frantic, Chiericozzi suggests. In fact, the band removed a lot of the additional parts they tried adding early on, giving the final product a bit of a ghostly feel. The songs on Drift took giant leaps and trips from their beginnings only to find the band returning to the first spark of creation.
