Your new album Encore is out now, where and when did you record?

We recorded it in the restoring RCA A studio in Nashville Tennessee (where I live, as well) with my friend, Dave Cobb producing it. We did all of over 2017 but it was in sporadic bursts since we were on the road so frequently.

What or who has inspired the songwriting and sound of Encore?

We were very inspired by all sorts of classic and modern sounds but we had the intention of making every song have the ability to be played as the encore during a live performance.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

NPR mostly, Howard Stern, Travis Meadows, Foy Vance.

How did you first start playing music?

It came from singing in church as a child but when I was in my early teen years, I received a 4-track tape record and the fascination of making records is what ultimately maintained my interest in making music.

Encore features the singles All On My Mind and King For A Day. Encore is a strong mix of blues and soul, with a Nashville twist. Where did the blues and soul influences come from?

Probably growing up in Alabama.

 What programs/equipment do you use?

I’m all over the place when it comes to that. We use a mix of modern and vintage recording equipment. We track to tape but then dump to ProTools for quick work flow.

What do you enjoy most about playing music?

The community, be it other musician, engineers, songwriters, etc…. but the greatest is the community with the audience.

How do you prepare for each show?

I usually have dinner, do about 20 minutes of yoga, warm up the throat, listen to some loud music with the fellas, have some Jameson and then rock and roll.

Favourite food and place to hang out?

Usually Thai…

The bus.

RF Shannon Announces New Album “Trickster Blues,” Out 5/4, Premieres 1st SIngle “Cold Spell”

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae

RF Shannon, the desert blues band fronted by Shane Renfro, announced the release of their second album Trickster Blues, due out May 4 on Cosmic Dreamer Music. The record is their first since relocating from Austin to Los Angeles; its eight expansive tracks unfurl the band’s unique blend of dusky Western and spectral psychedelia. RF Shannon released the album’s first single “Cold Spell” via Brooklyn Vegan today, and Renfro shared the story behind the track:
It was cold outside, that wet-to-the bones Austin, TX cold. I was huddled around a space heater just playing that walk-up riff over and over. I was feeling elated and terrified. I had just told someone I loved them that had been my friend for many years, and she said she loved me back. Without saying too much, the situation was complicated.  We both knew we were on the cusp of something life-changing, but we both felt a lot of guilt and grief over it and wanted to handle the situation properly by letting it unfold naturally. So we just stepped out of each other’s lives briefly to figure our own hearts out. When it comes down to it, the song is about feeling like a cold person for interjecting into someone else’s fate, but also feeling like, maybe I am part of this person’s fate and this is how it’s supposed to be.
Trickster Blues is out May 4 on Cosmic Dreamer and is available for pre-order now.
RF Shannon – Trickster Blues
May 4 – Cosmic Dreamer
1. Tooth Ache
2. I’m Only Dying
3. Cold Spell
4. Gates of Paradise
5. Badlands
6. Black Madonna, So Divine
7. Trickster Blues
8. Silver Woman
MORE ON RF SHANNON:
On Trickster Blues, their new full length album for Cosmic Dreamer, RF Shannon take a drastic shift from the long form, pensive desert meditations of their previous record. “The process was a drastic shift from the one we took with Jaguar Palace and I was hooked. It was a blast all of the time. We kept a quick pace due to external circumstances via random or otherwise inevitable interruptions, so we learned to take what we could get. If a take was good, it was a keeper, we didn’t second guess it. In just four days we had demoed the majority of my new material and it just felt so right,” explains Shane Renfro, the mind behind RF Shannon.
Born out of natural and self-imposed boundaries, the final product is an album that lives in the sonic space between desert blues and old school R&B. At times heavy like a jackhammer while maintaining the velvety vocal deliveries of Renfro, Trickster Blues is an album that embraces the natural indecision surrounding the songwriting process and goes with its gut decision every step of the way. By working on the principal that if the first impression of a song is good enough at the moment then it is good enough to be the final product,  Trickster Blues paints a portrait of Renfro’s truth and his truth alone. “Maybe it’s a terrible mistake, maybe its’ better this way,” comments Renfro on the writing process. “I think that’s what this record will always mean to me. That’s kind of the Trickster in a way. Many different facets, but the name conjures a sort of pure whimsical mischief, a dose of raw wild impulse that reminds you to laugh at whatever it is thats happening.”
Demoed in four days in Marfa and recorded in two in Lockhart, Texas with the help of Jesse Woods and Will Patterson, the album is demanding in its immediacy while providing a raw and profound insight to the raw sonic & lyrical landscape Renfro & Co have crafted.

No Mono share new single ‘Tidal Fight’; announce debut LP Islands (Part 1) out via Pieater on May 4

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae

Following their debut run of sold out shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Alice Springs last week, NO MONO announce the details of their forthcoming debut LP Islands (Part 1) out via Pieater on May 4, along with the release of their third single, ‘Tidal Fight’. Listen to it ‘Tidal Fight’ now:

Following early singles ‘Butterflies’ and ‘Violence Broken’ (and the release of their respective Slice of Pielive videos, here and here), ‘Tidal Fight’ is another taste of the pair’s unmistakable take on dark electronica washed with stirring strings and jarring synths with Ainslie Wills’ inimitable vocals slipping in and sending us to the end.

Tom Snowdon says of the track, “Tidal Fight is the track that inspired a lot of the ideas on the record. The words tell the story of moving away from a safe and familiar spot, like an old friendship or relationship, and into the unknown. It’s about starting over – about needing to break away from the known and become something else to stay above water.”

‘Tidal Fight’ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Mikey Cahill, Herald Sun

“it’s a beautiful, minimal injection of neo-soul to the heart.”

“This is truly something special.”
I OH YOU

“Behind dreamy synths that swirl, Snowden once again hooks you in with an irresistibly stunning vocal display. With an alluring guitar adding another layer of mood, Violence Broken builds towards heights that show beauty in all its intensity.”

KUNZITE Release Video for “PRESSURE”, Debut Album BIRDS DON’T FLY Out March 2nd

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae
KUNZITE DROP NEW VIDEO
“PRESSURE”

DEBUT ALBUM BIRDS DON’T FLY
TO BE RELEASED MARCH 2

KUNZITE have shared their newest video from their debut album BIRDS DON”T FLY, out THIS Friday March 2 via Sol System Records. KUNZITE is the new project from producer/multi-instrumentalist Mike Stroud of RATATAT and Agustin White of WHITE FLIGHT. KUNZITE’s fresh new video for “PRESSURE” features incredibly psychedelic visuals by the master of digital infinities Hexiosis. The genre-bending track was recorded by KUNZITE within a 48 hour full moon period on the Northshore of Kauai, and paired with the fractaline geometries, makes for a truly cosmic trip through a sonic wormhole! Watch the video for “PRESSURE” here:

KUNZITE previously shared “VAPORS” and “MONKS“.  Read what the band had to say about “VAPORS” via a Consequence Of Sound feature here.

“(KUNZITE are) one of the more intriguing newcomers of the new year so far.” I Heart Moosiq
“(KUNZITE have) a bit of an electro-rock fusion that definitely feels a bit like RATATAT, only with some more electro-pop experimentation. ” We All Want Someone To Shout For
Pre-order BIRDS DON’T FLY digital
Pre-order BIRDS DON’T FLY physical

KUNZITE

is a multi-dimensional sound system broadcasting from inner Earth, while simultaneously emanating from the heart of the Milky Way Galaxy. It requires at least two human interfaces to disseminate the sounds, those being Stroud and White.
The BIRDS DON’T FLY project transported the two musicians across many continents, with spontaneous recording sessions in Hawaii, New York, California, Iceland, and even India. This album is the result of two producers getting the keys to their very own spaceships; vessels fueled by sub bass frequencies, guitarmonies and intuitive voice-activated propulsion systems.
BIRDS DON’T FLY was entirely recorded, mixed and produced by Stroud and White. At times the pair were working together in the same mothership, while on other occasions they sent sonic holograms back and forth via a wifi connection from their own personal spacecraft.
After an intense courting period by every major label on the surface of the Earth, as well as a few offers from inner-Earth based companies, the duo eventually chose to eschew the traditional outlets and go entirely off planet.

The producers then signed an unprecedented deal with SOL SYSTEM RECORDS, as SSR’s first Earth-based artist. With label headquarters located on one of the moons of Jupiter and satellite offices orbiting Saturn and Uranus, SOL SYSTEM recently expanded into a new subterranean outpost on the dark side

of the moon and began to actively search for it’s premiere Earth artist.
With the help of SSR’s galactic distribution, KUNZITE is now broadcasting their music in whatever format desired, including holographic sound-flowers, telepathic micro-gestures, as well as the still inaudible-to-the-human-ear MP13 – the preferred audio format of the majority of KUNZITE’s off-planetary audience.  On earth, SSR is distributed by Stem.
As for the future of KUNZITE, both members of the band maintain that BIRDS DON’T FLYis simply the first chapter of a much larger narrative.
“And it’s a narrative that communicates through beats laced with alien birdsong,” added White.

International Music Summit (IMS), the premier global platform for business, culture and education within the electronic music industry, returns to the global dance music capital in May 2018 for its annual three-day educational, inspirational and motivational thought-leadership forum. Aimed at industry leaders and artists from the international electronic music sector, it throws a spotlight onto the complex challenges and emerging opportunities that really matter in today’s ever evolving industry.

Following the success of the 10th Anniversary event in 2017, IMS today announce 69 new speakers for its summit on May 23-25th 2018. The platform, previously described by media as “the TED of music conferences”, continues to be a catalyst for developing and launching initiatives that result in positive change within the electronic music industry.

Electronic titan deadmau5 (Artist, USA) and multi-award-winning DJ and producer Black Coffee (Artist, South Africa) will join the summit, discussing their own unique and inspiring paths to success, their thoughts on the industry and sharing what it takes to build and sustain a successful global career.

Michael Addicott (Pandora, Manager of Curation, USA) and Jonathan Barnes (Pandora, Head of Label Licensing, USA) will reveal the secrets behind getting music heard on the world’s powerful music discovery platform and give insight into its unique approach to curation on SEQUENCING THE GENOME: HOW TO GET YOUR MUSIC HEARD ON PANDORA.

The electronic music industry in its current digital form experiences an array of challenges that blockchain technology may have the ability to solve. In recent months a number of start-ups are already targeting the music industry for disruption and with Spotify’s recent acquisition of Mediachain, does this signal significant and permanent change or are we simply caught in a state of content creation and consumption? Widely regarded as the best authority on the topic, Benji Rogers (dotBlockchain Media, CEO & Co-Founder, USA) will deliver a Keynote Address on BLOCKCHAIN and later a BLOCKCHAIN 101 – essential viewing for anyone wishing to gain a deeper understanding of this complex subject.

Whilst industry focused, IMS Ibiza continues to be community led in feel; this year spearheading the thought leadership pillar with a KEYNOTE INTERVIEW is Bradley Gunn (Bradley Gunn Raver, UK) arguably Britain’s most influential and prolific raver who for the past few years has confronted his personal battle with Asperger’s Syndrome by embracing sober clubbing and directed his care-free passion for dancing into an inspirational and ambassadorial role for self-purpose.

Sexual harassment will finally be addressed with a proactive discussion at IMS Ibiza, less talk more action; what can we do, how we can listen, how can we fight it? All questions that Carl Loben (DJ Mag, Editor-in-Chief, UK), Kate Hutchinson (The Guardian, Journalist, UK), Carly Wilford (SISTER Collective, DJ/Presenter & Creator, UK) and others will look to for real positive answers in SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN DJ CULTURE, presented by leading female platform SHESAID.SO

EMERGING PARTY DESTINATIONS will see Darren James–Thomas (FMLY Agency, Director, UK) share his experience of establishing the talent programme at the newly launched Oasis Festival – Morocco alongside nightlife visionary Thomas Heyne who created the incredible Scorpios in Mykonos, Gustavo Pereira (NEOPOP/BPM Portugal, CEO/Director, Portugal) and Mark Newton (Broadwick Live, Director, UK) who has been responsible for leading international festivals Snowbombing and Hideout.

One of the masterminds of today’s electronic music scene, Maykel Piron (Armada Music, Co-Founder/CEO, Netherlands), founder of one of the biggest independent dance music labels in the world, will bring his twenty-five years of industry experience to the DIGITAL DEBATE, joining Chris Manning(The Orchard, Senior Director/International Operations, UK) in discussing our ever-changing relationship with the online domain.

ARTIST TAX 101 will provide essential information on wealth management and tax advice from Maximilien Jazani (Manswell Law Firm, Lawyer, France) responsible for French megastar David Guetta and Thomas St John (Thomas St John, Director, USA) who represents the worlds-highest paid DJ, Calvin Harris.

YOUNG GUNS NETWORK PRESENT DISRUPTORS, NO RULES; Four young entrepreneurs successful in challenging traditional models analyse the ever-changing music business landscape and consider how adaptability and creativity are more crucial than ever to succeed. This exciting panel is comprised of 2017 IMS x Mixmag Visionaries competition winner Mich Mellard (Sync Sync, Founder, UK), Hannan Malik(NOWHERENEAR, Founder, UK), Lauren Pavan (GRM Daily, Chief Operating Officer, UK) and Inder Phull (KRPT, Founder, UK) and will be moderated by Cherie Hu (Billboard/Forbes, Tech Columnist, USA).

Electronic music was built by people doing things on their own terms. From Phuture birthing acid on a TB-303 to London vocalists utilising YouTube to kickstart the UK’s rap revolution, a do-it-yourself ethos has always pushed the movement into the future. In MIXMAG’S 5 UNDER 25 moderator Jaguar Bingham (Mixmag TV, Presenter, UK) will meet Caroline Simionesu-Marin (A&R Manager, XL Recordings, UK) and other young visionaries who are changing the shape of the electronic music scene.

IMS Ibiza continues to highlight, examine and discuss some of the most important issues facing our industry today. During the GIVE IT AWAY OR MAKE IT PAY panel Mark Lawrence (AFEM: Association for Electronic Music, CEO, UK) will be joined by Danny Howard (BBC Radio 1 DJ, Nothing Else Matters, UK) Jenni Cochrane (AEI, Director of Culture & Partnerships, UK) and Simon Hills (Axtone, Label & Artist Manager, UK)  to examine a new approach for making music accessible online, moving away from the traditional DJ-only focused way of release towards multi-platform streaming to guarantee equal and free access to online music.

IMS Ibiza 2018 will bring together representatives from leading agencies, organisations and companies to set the global electronic music agenda and champion new content platforms. Inspiring a new generation is Mike Malak (Coda Agency, Agent, UK) who will present KID Talks (Knowledge, Identity, Discovery), featuring inspirational people in all kinds of careers (and all under the age of 30).

Fiona Measham (Durham University Professor of Criminology/The Loop Director, UK) has for over two decades conducted research exploring changing trends in legal and illegal drugs; the night time economy and the socio-cultural context to consumption, making it her driving mission to help inform partygoers how to enjoy themselves safely. Because knowledge is our best weapon she will join IMS Ibiza to share her research and learnings in THE LOOP: IS DRUG TESTING THE SOLUTION?

With each year come milestones and achievements celebrated by labels, artists and events alike, with 2018 being no exception. Firstly, 25 YEARS OF SÓNAR: SHAPING UNDERGROUND CULTURE, the world-renowned Barcelona festival will be represented by Enric Palau (Sónar Festival, Co-Director, Spain) and Georgia Taglietti (Sónar Festival, Head of Communications, Spain) who will examine its achievements and explain its extraordinary and innovative contribution to the genre.

Joining the celebration with an equally impressive milestone is 25 YEARS OF POSITIVA RECORDS. The pioneering UK major label is known for breaking electronic tracks into the mainstream and the panel will have a special focus on THE CHANGING FACE OF A&R in the last 25 years. Leading this will be the labels leading A&R directors throughout this time – Jason Ellis, Nick Halkes and Dave Lambert.

Hot on the heels with their own impressive anniversary is UK based Toolroom. Now a global brand in dance music it has diversified beyond a traditional record label model into successful arms in radio, events and artist management. Founding brothers Mark Knight (Artist, UK) and Stuart Knight (Toolroom, Managing Director, UK) will share the history of the label, it’s strong musical vision and tight artist roster in – 15 years of Toolroom.

IMS Co-Founder, Pete Tong states: “Entering our 11th year, it’s vital for IMS Ibiza to assemble the best and brightest minds in the industry to debate the issues that affect us most and to discuss routes to progress and succeed. I’m really proud to announce our latest wave of speakers, who represent all sides of the electronic music industry, from accomplished leaders who bring a wealth of experience through to the new generation who bring fresh ideas and thinking to push our genre forwards. Nur Jaber announces debut album and remix EP on her label OSF -‘If Only – A State Of Peace’ is out May 14th

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae

Nur Jaber’s debut Album will be out in April on OSF. If Only – A State of Peace tends to diverge from the typical club-focused EPs that we’ve already seen on her label. Focusing mainly on the Nord Lead 4, TR-09 & her vocals, the Berlin-based producer delivers 9 tracks influenced by IDM, Ambient music & a touch of Classical, showcasing a wide range of influences that has come her way along the years. The LP is paired with a remix package, out in June, featuring Dax J, UVB, Claudio PRC & P.E.A.R.L., some of the artists who have most inspired and supported her music.

Beirut-born Berlin-based rising DJ & producer Nur Jaber will put out her debut album ‘If Only – A State Of Peace’ on her imprint OSF which will be out on May 14th.

Drummer, bassist, vocalist and now fully focused on electronic music, Nur Jaber runs the OSF label and is a resident DJ of STAUB at About Blank in Berlin. Known for her shows with live vocals over her DJ sets & using live 909 drums leaning toward more of an hybrid style, she is playing regularly at Berghain and Tresor and 2017 has seen her touring in Europe, Asia and US and she will also make her first appearance at Boiler Room tomorrow.

Focusing mainly on the Nord Lead 4, TR-09 & her vocals, the up and coming producer delivers 9 tracks influenced by IDM, ambient and classical music and LP will be paired with a remix EP featuring reworks by Dax J, UVB, Claudio PRC and P.E.A.R.L.

JO PASSED – Announce debut album ‘Their Prime’ out May 25th via Sub Pop Records – Share new single & video “MDM”

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae

On May 25th, Vancouver-based quartet Jo Passed will release Their Prime, their first full-length effort, on CD/LP/CS/DL worldwide through Sub Pop Records, with the exception of Canada through Royal Mountain Records.

The band have delivered an official video for Their Prime standout “MDM,” which was directed by Eleanor Petry. Bandleader Jo Hirabayashi says of the video, “something something, on my phone too much, something something, marshall mcluhan, something something, stanley kubrick, something something, the medium is the message, something something, ouch my insides.”

Jo has been part of the DIY music scene since his late teens. Initially it was just him and his high school best friend Elliot Langford against the world. They were the “freaky music weirdos” and they began their own band projects. Jo was pretty sure that it would be two of them riding into the sunset – or maybe the gloom – together. Personal circumstances and the phenomenon of the late 20s return of Saturn (for those who believe in astrology) got in the way. Their band Sprïng called it a day. That’s where the life of Jo Passed began. The idea of a band dynamic is far more appealing to Jo than solo projects, and the current incarnation of Jo Passed feels like its most robust yet.

Jo, along with his friend and drummer Mac Lawrie, moved across the country from Vancouver to Montreal. The two would play shows in Montreal and eventually tour the far right corner of North America. Upon Jo’s return to the west coast, multi-instrumentalist Bella Bébé officially joined the band in January of 2016, expanding Jo Passed from trio to a full quartet. Multimedia artist Megan-Magdalena Bourne began working with Jo Passed on a video project for the song “Rage” (from the Out EP). This creative partnership would eventually lead to her taking on the role of bassist for the band.

When not geeking out over The Zombies, or Nirvana, or Johann Sebastian Bach… Bella, Mac, and Megan have worked with Jo to realize the live experience of Their Prime, following two Jo Passed EPs titled Up and Out.

Jo Passed has scheduled a few spring club shows and festival dates before hitting the road later this year. Current highlights include shows with Hardly Art’s Dick Stusso (March 16th-24th) and an appearance at Treefort Music Festival in Boise (March 21st).

Tour dates:
Mar. 16 – Bozeman, MT – Labor Temple*
Mar. 18 – Denver, CO – Lost Lake Lounge*
Mar. 19 – Salt Lake City, UT – Kilby Court*
Mar. 21 – Boise, ID – Treefort Music Festival
Mar. 22 – Seattle, WA – Barboza*
Mar. 24 – Portland, OR – Crush House *
Apr. 14 – Victoria, BC – Lucky Bar
*w/ Dick Stusso

Preorders for Their Prime are now available through Sub Pop and Royal Mountain Records. LP purchases in North America through megamart.subpop.com and select independent retailers will receive the limited Loser edition on clear vinyl (while supplies last). There will also be a T- shirt design available. The limited Loser edition will also be available in the UK/EU on clear vinyl from select independent retailers (while supplies last).

Their Prime is a record about identity and the loss of time that happens as a direct consequence of being in the city with nowhere to rent, no time outside of employment and no realistic expectations to live up to. It encompasses that fear of being beyond the glory years, the most creatively fruitful period of one’s life. Those years were lost to contemporary struggles for working relationships, home, identity and space. “It’s me owning my worst nightmare,” he admits. “A lot of the Jo Passed project has been about confronting fears. I was afraid to move away from Vancouver to Montreal on my own. Afraid to leave musical relationships I had. Afraid to bare the full responsibility of a project. I’ve been putting out records and not ones anyone’s necessarily heard. Being open about those fears is a good way of dealing with them. You end up at this point where you hit 30 and you’re like, ‘Oh what happened? Am I done? Did I not activate my main creative energy?’ It’s a ridiculous idea but 30 feels a little like 1000 in rock n roll terms.” You can hear the frustrations and the jitters in the crashing loud-and-quiet motifs throughout the album’s twelve tracks, which offer up a patchwork quilt of sound, similar to Faust’s IV or Fugazi’s Red Medicine [read more at Sub Pop].

Their Prime tracklisting:
1. Left
2. MDM
3. Glass
4. Undemo
5. Facetook
6. Repair
7. R.I.P.
8. Millennial Trash Blues
9. You, Prime

Shame share video for ‘Lampoon’

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae

“On their debut album, the UK rock group separates themselves from their peers,
imbuing their post-adolescent rage with wit and, crucially, a self-effacing
awareness that they may never succeed.
”
Pitchfork

“The UK’s most exhilarating new band.”
Billboard

“Beneath the sneering vocals and warring guitars, there’s a finely attuned sense
of songcraft to the post-punk of south London band Shame.
”
The FADER

Today, youthful British misanthropes Shame share the video for their song ‘Lampoon‘, one of the many highlights off their freshly released debut, Songs of Praise, out now on Dead Oceans via Inertia Music. The footage from the video comes from the band’s first North American tour back in November of 2017, surely a moment that remains burned into the memories of anyone lucky enough to have caught them perform.

Australia is finally catching on in terms of understanding the true electricity contained within these five young London lads, who were dubbed one of the breakout acts of Laneway Festival 2018. Of their Sydney sideshow, Happy praised Shame as “a band who have hit the ground sprinting“, and The Brag said of their Laneway appearance: “they were one of those customary successful Laneway gambles – an excellent band with a tiny following in this country who proved as dynamic and interesting as the bigger acts booked.”

Laura Veirs shares ‘Watch Fire’, new single featuring Sufjan Stevens

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae

New album The Lookout coming Friday, April 13 on Raven Marching Band Records via [PIAS]

Laura Veirs is set to release The Lookout, her tenth solo full-length album, on Friday, April 13 on Raven Marching Band Records via [PIAS]. After presenting lead single, ‘Everybody Needs You‘, “a bright and expansive arrangement that echoes, purrs and flutters invitingly” (NPR Music), the singer-songwriter now shares ‘Watch Fire‘ featuring Sufjan Stevens. Read the artist’s statement below, as told to Pitchfork.

“I’m not sure if you’ve heard wolves howling in the wild but there’s no mistaking their sound. It’s nothing like the howling of wind; it’s much more eerie and sinister. ‘Watch Fire’ is about protecting the vulnerable among us and how I feel vulnerable, too, in this political climate. You can hear that in the lyric ‘underneath this dome of red / white dog circling overhead.’

It was an honour to have Sufjan sing on this track as I admire him a lot. I heard his voice on this song when I wrote it. We’ve been friends for a long time and he’s given me quite a few artistic pep talks over the years. I sang on his Carrie and Lowell sessions so it’s nice to have him on my record this time around.”

A prolific songwriter for over twenty years, Laura Veirs proves the depth of her musical skill on The Lookout. Here is a batch of inimitable, churning, exquisite folk-pop songs; a concept album about the fragility of precious things. Written and produced on the heels of Veirs’ acclaimed album with Neko Case and KD Lang case/lang/veirs, The Lookout is a soundtrack for turbulent times, full of allusions to protectors: the camper stoking a watch fire, a mother tending her children, a sailor in a crow’s nest and a lightning rod channelling energy.

Last night, MGMT made their first TV appearance in support of their fourth studio album Little Dark Age which was released on Feb. 9th and debuted at No. 2 at both Alternative and Rock album Chart and was met with positive critical review. The band played album single “Me and Michael” amid 80s VHS style video effects for live broadcast on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Watch it HERE. At special request from the show, the band also filmed a bonus performance of  “Electric Feel” alongside Jon Batiste and the Stay Human band. The hit was one of a handful of songs that was played for the audience during commercial break during Stephen Colbert’s tenure at Comedy Central as host of the Colbert Report. Watch it HERE.
MGMT will embark on a world tour beginning this week, starting with a run of North American dates. Matthew Dear and Cola Boyy will open select shows on the tour. Full list of dates and support acts listed below.
MGMT recently released the official music video for “Me and Michael” accompanied by a narrative based music video directed by Joey Frank. The video tells the fictional story of “Me and Michael” a song written by Filipino band True Faith, which MGMT discovers and decides to record as their own leading toa rise of unprecedented success for the band followed by a crashing fall when they are accused of plagiarism.  Watch the video HERE. Earlier this month MGMT released a behind-the-scenes video chronicling the making of Little Dark Age at Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, NY. Watch here. MGMT has also made available the lyric video for the enchanting track “Hand It Over”. Listen HERE. The group previously released the visuals for shadowy title track, “Little Dark Age,” watch HERE, and  “When You Die”, a dream-like journey through the cycles of life. Watch HERE.  See full tracklisting  for Little Dark Age below.
Formed in 2002, MGMT released their influential, Grammy-nominated, debut album Oracular Spectacular in 2007. This was followed by 2010’s Congratulations and 2013’s self-titled album MGMT.

High Tension Release New Single Ghost To Ghost And Unveil Video

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae
High Tension have returned with a powerful new single titled Ghost To Ghost, the first bite of new music from the Melbourne based heavy quartet since their 2015 breakthrough album, Bully.

BUY GHOST TO GHOST HERE
Following the release of Bully new members, Mike Deslandes & Lauren Hammel brought new discussions and direction. Exploring numerous avenues, under the guise of heavy music, the dynamic took a turn from the band of old. A hybrid tuning seemed to reveal something new, this voice lent to writing Ghost To Ghostand has become the band’s new blueprint.

The lyrical punch in Ghost To Ghost exhibits both fury and patience, and is an exploration of vocalist Karina Utomo’s own historical trauma and truth coming to the surface. Utomo describes the movement:

“Last year I connected with other Indonesians whose families were implicated in the anti-communist purge, even at present, systemic silencing has stopped people from sharing their stories and spreading truth surrounding that era, they described their daily story telling as “dari hantu ke hantu” or “from ghost to ghost” and I felt like this was what I have been trying to attempt for the past decade.”

The track was produced, engineered and mixed by High Tension guitarist Mike Deslandes. Ghost To Ghost is accompanied by a new video, directed by High Tension bassist, Matt Weston.

High Tension will celebrate the launch of Ghost To Ghost on Friday, April 6 at the Gasometer Hotel, Melbourne. Tickets available at hightension.com.au. Further show dates can be found below.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares new song, ‘Not In Love We’re Just High’

by the partae February 28, 2018
written by the partae

Today, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares ‘Not In Love We’re Just High‘, the newest song off their forthcoming album Sex & Food (out Friday, April 6 on Jagjaguwar via Inertia Music), as premiered on Beats 1 World Record.

Following first single ‘American Guilt‘, the song examines relational confusion induced by drugs (or simply mania). The couple at the centre of the song realise that they’re not actually in love, they are indeed simply high, and how a realisation that may seem sad on its surface could actually be quite liberating and euphoric. The tension of the song’s chaotic introduction is given relief by the gorgeous repeated Wurlitzer chords that make up the backbone of the song. The steady build adds to the euphoric feeling of liberation born from this epiphany.

otally Mild share video for ‘From One Another’; ‘Her’ album out now

New album Her out now on Chapter via Inertia Music

“A shining talisman for the heartbroken.”
Pitchfork“Engorged, engaged, empowered bedroom sulk music.”

“Sweet, harmony-rich, pointedly concise jangle-pop.”
NPR

“Skewed pop gold.”
Noisey

“An ethereal voice…lovely songs and just-so jangly arrangements.”
BrooklynVegan

In support of Her, the just-released album from Melbourne’s Totally Mild, the band have shared a video for their single ‘From One Another‘. The video debuted via Culture Collide who note, “the interplay of chiming guitars and Mitchell’s soothing voice brings a hypnotic quality to the song: it’s easy to lose yourself in ‘From One Another’, as the lush composition blurs the lines between verse, chorus, and bridge.”

‘From One Another’ was directed by Tobias Willis of KEWL Studios and he notes, “this clip, considered follow on from the previous for ‘Today Tonight‘, is drawing Liz’s character to a subtle close. As with the other clips we were aiming to keep the video in a more cinematic space and were referencing some of those classic one takes from 60’s & 70’s cinema. Throughout the tracking shot each character vignette has it’s own story exploring themes of loneliness, faith and friendship.” IndieShuffle have called the track “a sticky sweet indie pop gem that’s lush with infectious chords and vocals.”

Following an Australian tour with Perfume Genius, Totally Mild will be making their way to the US for slots at SXSW before coming home for a national album tour in May. Dates below.
