““KickAss Music and Camping Festival!! This will be fun and not just because of the camping and the music or even the KICKASS, the fun is hanging with our mates backstage and you lot out the front. We’re itching to get to Kenilworth … it’ll be all about Rock, memories and laughs.” The Choirboys

“We were devastated when we found out about GANGgajang having to pull out. But sometimes things are meant to be. Choirboys happened to be available, it fit our festival perfectly and now we have another iconic band playing at our festival. With a plethora of classic hits, we can’t wait to welcome Mark Gable and his band to Kenilworth in September”

Klaeton Sheehan, KickAss Festival

| THE TRANSITS | PUNK ROCK LORDS RELEASE NEW SINGLE + MUSIC VIDEO ‘FALL INTO DARK’ + ANNOUNCE UPCOMING ALBUM RELEASE

by the partae August 28, 2023
written by the partae

New Zealand/South African Punk Rock lords The Transits are back with their inspiring new single and music video ‘Fall Into Dark’, which was premiered exclusively via Hysteria Mag.

“Fall Into Dark grapples with the subject of hope and despair. You can be in the darkest of times, when you feel like all is lost, and yet there is still a glimmer of hope. Sometimes that glimmer can be an intuitive voice deep inside yourself, or it could come from someone who genuinely cares about you. The line ‘Break through the lies again, live in the light again’ sums this one up perfectly.”

‘Fall Into Dark’ is taken from the band’s upcoming album (set for release in Nov 2023).

Ryan Lunn (vocals, guitars, synths), Dom Antelme (vocals, bass) and Tyrone Smith (drums) recorded their parts of the track in their respective studios across Auckland and South Africa, before sending it all to Ryan in Durban, South Africa where he mixed and mastered the track.

The new single is the follow-up to their recently released single ‘Renegade Hearts’. The single was aired on over 100 radio stations worldwide and was premiered via AAA Backstage.

New single ‘Fall Into Dark’ is available on all major online streaming services.

Underwire Interview

by the partae August 28, 2023
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?
Wellington, New Zealand.

How did the band form?

Jane & I started a Pixies tribute band, Proxies, in about 2007, Spike joined us, bringing his Clash & Who chops, and we turned our cover chemistry to our own songs in 2010.  Drummer Mark joined in 2013, we did a run of gigs through to 2016. Steve joined us on bass in 2020 and we quickly got busy again, writing, performing and recording over the last 3 years.

What’s been happening recently?

We’ve been releasing our first set of singles and playing live in Wellington and surrounds. We’ve got two singles so far this year – ‘Gravity’ and ‘Calling Out’ – with two more scheduled over the next couple of months. We’re getting great playlist & feature pickup from UK & US indie channels, and some really encouraging reviews.  And we’re now working with producer Scott Seabright to prepare for more recording in November, plus more gigs through the year. Exciting times.

Your latest single ‘Calling Out’ is out now, what influenced the sound and song writing?

‘Calling Out’ was written by Spike, he’s got his own set of influences and stylistic ways. He brought it to the band as a ready piece, and we’ve all built our own parts through rehearsal and review. It’s one of those songs that the band has revered from the start, we all play it with great delicacy and the love to make it count!

How did you go about writing Calling Out?

A man, his guitar, and time for reflection on a dark time.

Where and when did you record and who with?

We recorded at Massey University School of Music in 2021, with Mike Gibson and assisted by Robbie Pattinson. Mixing and finishing got massively disrupted by the pandemic – lockdowns and rescheduling –  but our label Plasticgroove HQ brought studio guru Scott Seabright into the picture and he’s mastered the Massey recordings for release, and is now taking an active production role for future projects.

How does your creative process usually take place?

We’re pretty varied in approach. Previously myself, Spike & Jane had brought already written songs, and we’ve made them our own as a band. In the last year or two, Jane & I have done a lot of writing together, but often ideas have come from jams together, then workshopping by Jane, Steve & I to get new material in shape for the whole band to realise.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Personally I’ve been listening to several Wellington bands, enjoying the local live scene again and listening to what’s out in release, for example Lung, This Silent Divide, Column of Sand, Mister Unit, Electric Tapestry, Tower of Flints, Dream State Empire.  I’ve got a pretty eclectic library of music on my phone, a lot of Pixies, Faith No More, Queens of the Stone Age.

Any shows coming up?

We’ve just played the much-sort-after Lovelands music club in Porirua on 26 August, next is Wellington’s Valhalla on 28 September with Electric Tapestry to launch our next single ‘Falling All Over’ out on 29th September. We’re teaming up with Electric Tapestry again at Meow in Wellington CBD on 8 December.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?

Preparation for recordings with Scott Seabright producing in November, and get booking for next year. And we’ve got another handful of new songs to bring into the repertoire, so more rehearsal and planning together.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Again purely personal, bacon & eggs, and I love Fidel’s Cafe in Wellington’s Upper Cuba Street.

After Their Back 2 Back Mainstage Set at Tomorrowland, R3HAB Joins Forces with W&W For ’90s Eurodance-Inspired Single “Million Places.” Out Now on Rave Culture

by the partae August 26, 2023
written by the partae

Artists: R3HAB, W&W
Title: Million Places
Label: Rave Culture

Download / Stream

Veteran Multi-Platinum producers R3HAB and W&W teamed up to create their production “Million Places,” an uplifting big-room gem with a distinctive atmosphere of the ’90s. While the track opens with sparkling, digitized vocals, the Dutch artists quickly incorporate a strong, driving bassline coupled with a dominant synth to up the ante. Despite the uplifting lyrics that are perfect for sharing with that special someone, the intensive tempo of “Million Places” isn’t for the faint of heart. The formula of undulating bass, expansive synths, and ethereal vocals is reminiscent of the sound that’s experiencing a renaissance right now, paying homage to artists such as Vengaboys, Alice Deejay, Culture Beat, etc. R3HAB and W&W employed their sophisticated production prowess to create something that feels both nostalgic and modern, appealing to both longtime dance music fans and those who are hearing it for the first time. Whether you had a chance to check out R3HAB & W&W‘s back 2 back performances at Tomorrowland Winter in the French Alps back in March and at Tomorrowland‘s iconic Mainstage this summer, you can be sure that you’ll experience “Million Places” this autumn on radio airwaves and dance floors across the globe.

“After months of testing and finessing, Willem, Ward, and I are excited to officially release ‘Million Places.’ It was inspiring to premiere this record at Tomorrowland Winter during our b2b set, and we agreed the record was ready to release after the great response at Tomorrowland Mainstage last month. It’s our fourth and most anticipated collab, and I think our work keeps getting better.” – R3HAB

“Loved working on this one with R3HAB, the vocals instantly hit us, and it’s goosebumps every time we play it.” – W&W

R3HAB

Multi-Platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the past fifteen years. From his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, Sia, Jason Derulo, Ed Sheeran, Tyga, Ellie Goulding, The Chainsmokers, P!nk, to name only a few, to anthems such as multi-Platinum-certified “All Around The World (La La La),” “Lullaby” with Mike Williams, “Flames” with ZAYN and Jungleboi, or “Creep” with Gattüso, to his collaborations with the likes of Ava Max, Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul, Afrojack, Armin van Buuren, Lukas Graham, Icona Pop, and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most forward-thinking artists in the game. His work has collected over 9 billion streams to date, including 1.1 billion in 2022 alone. He founded his label CYB3RPVNK in 2016, which has passed 4B streams across platforms since its inception. He is Spotify’s Most Discovered Artist, one of Spotify’s top 300 most streamed artists, ranked #13 on the prestigious DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs chart, and has earned over 70 Gold and Platinum certificates. On top of that, he performed at the world’s top festivals, such as EDC, Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Balaton Sound, Coachella, Summer Sonic Festival, DWP Jakarta, and more. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, R3HAB has earned his place as a household name in dance music.

W&W

In 2007, Willem van Hanegem and Ward van der Harst formed W&W, DJ and production duo, and have become one of the most sought-after acts in electronic music. With their energetic music and festival sets, W&W have dominated dance floors worldwide and ranked in DJ Mag’s Top 20 DJs for the past 9 years. They have performed at renowned festivals like Tomorrowland, Ultra, EDC, and broke the world record in China with 24 shows in 27 days. W&W‘s sound combines uplifting melodies of trance, the intensity of Electro, and the drive of Progressive, creating a unique and rebellious style. From their early hits like ‘Rave After Rave‘ and ‘Bigfoot‘ to recent favorites “God Is A Girl,””Heaven Is A Place On Earth,” and “Rave Love’” their diverse productions appeal to multiple audiences. Under their alias NWYR, W&W continue to innovate and release trance-inspired productions. They run Rave Culture, a community-driven record label, and host a bi-weekly radio show with over 300,000 listeners. In 2020, they pioneered an XR augmented reality live stream and expanded it into Rave Culture Live, showcasing their DJ skills and productions. With over 60 shows annually and a massive social media following of over 10 million, W&W are true pioneers in the main stage electronic dance music scene. Their new phase brings fresh productions, explosive live sets, the growth of Rave Culture, and the impact of their NWYR alias. W&W are transcending boundaries in their own signature style and making a lasting impact.

Joey Sachi’s Curated Playlist: 11 songs that best fit the vibe of ‘Fractured’

by the partae August 25, 2023
written by the partae

This Boy’s In Love – The Presets

The chorus of This Boy’s In Love is an essential demonstration on layering airy vocals over kickass, driving synths.

Everything I wanted – Billie Eilish

The minimal production, highlighting the ethereal vocals.

To me – Alina Baraz

This track perfectly aligns with fractured. Super light beautiful vocals with minimal warm production to support.

Belong to You – Sabrina Claudio

The production has a similar vibe to Fractured and leaves just the right amount of space to highlight the lush vocals.

Fantasy – Alina Baraz

The general vibe as well as the minimal use of percussion for the beats throughout.

Get You – Daniel Caesar

I love the minimalist production at the beginning of this track, the relationship between the production and the vocals has a similar vibe to Fractured.

Nervous Tics – Maribou State

I really admired the way Holly Walker’s exquisite vocals are highlighted in this track, I wanted to create this space for my own vocals in Fractured.

Bonobo – Pieces

When I approached Andy Mak, my producer, I used this reference track as an example of minimal production with vocals sitting over the top of it all. The ending of this track has a little string/orchestral outro which severed as inspiration for the string breakdown in Fractured.

VIEWS – Mild Minds

I loved the liquid sounds of the production in this track, each sound in Fractured was carefully crafted to sound as lush as possible.

God Is The Space Between Us -Barry Can’t Swim

Though the BPM is much faster I really wanted to achieve the warmth that radiates from the production in this track when creating Fractured.

Walking On Water – TEED

Though it’s not the same BPM, I love the vocal tone in this track & the excitement that builds as each new production layer is added.

Chloe Kay and The Crusade Unveil Empowering Funky Blues Anthem, “Lies,” Recorded at Everland Studios in Sydney

by the partae August 25, 2023
written by the partae

“A voice that’ll make you sit the f*ck down and listen. The clarity, the range – outta this world!” – Lucy Smith (Triple J)

“The blistering instrumentation of icons such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Leon Bridges shine through, while Kay’s vocals feature a mesmerizing timbre reminiscent of the likes of Bonnie Raitt or even Joss Stone.” – Rolling Stone AU

“Don’t you just love finding those voices that stop you in your tracks? That you fall in love with instantly, hanging on every single word they sing? It’s rare and difficult to describe exactly what draws you to them, but when it comes it’s like lightning in a bottle. Chloe Kay, of Chloe Kay & The Crusade, has one of those voices. Press play on their latest single “Broken Woman” and I know you’ll fall in love too.” – Sounds of OZ

Eora-based blues, soul, and rock n roll band, Chloe Kay and The Crusade, are set to ignite the music scene with their highly anticipated new single “Lies,” scheduled for release on August 18th. Known for their fierce and soulful powerhouse vocals, the band has been making waves not only in Australia but also internationally, drawing comparisons to music legends like Bonnie Raitt, Joss Stone, and Leon Bridges by Rolling Stone AU.

Chloe Kay and The Crusade have been earning critical acclaim and gaining a devoted fanbase with their dynamic live performances. The band’s musical prowess was acknowledged when they were crowned winners of the 2023 Sydney Blues Society “Favourite Emerging Act” award. Furthermore, they made a significant impact at Bluesfest 2022, where they were finalists in the Bluesfest Busking Competition performing on a smaller stage within the festival grounds.

Having closed out 2022 with a memorable performance at the esteemed Woodford Folk Festival, the band’s journey continues with an exciting lineup of shows and performances across Australia. Their singles have received extensive airplay on Triple J and have been added to CMT rotation, further solidifying their position in the music industry.

The band’s latest single, “Broken Woman,” found recognition from none other than acclaimed blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa, who featured it in three of his Spotify playlists and included it in his “Cutting Edge Blues of 2022” best-of collection.

Adam James on guitar, James Arthur on bass, Juan Baratto on drums, Patrick Harrison on keys (not pictured), and the powerhouse vocals of Chloe Kay Richardson.

As they gear up for their debut EP release, Chloe Kay and The Crusade invite music lovers to join them to celebrate their single at Bucketty’s Brewery in Brookvale on August 19th, right after the single release. Additionally, they will be performing an early single launch at Rock Lily in The Star on August 11th and joining the lineup at the Blues & Roots Revival in Dooralong alongside Owen Campbell and Jesse Redwing on September 9th.

CHARLOTTE DAY WILSON Releases new single ‘Forever’ Feat. Snoh Aalegra

by the partae August 23, 2023
written by the partae

Toronto singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Charlotte Day Wilson returns to the spotlight today as a beacon of pure artistry with her new single ‘Forever,’ featuring generational R&B talent Snoh Aalegra. Tethered loosely to a warped interpolation of The Foundations’ classic, ‘Baby, Now That I Found You‘, Day Wilson’s lush vocals drift in and around a melancholy beat and ethereal piano, like smoke slowly sauntering from a candle just blown out. ‘Forever‘ also highlights the vulnerable songwriting and impeccably layered production that make Day Wilson a well-respected peer and coveted collaborator. Aalegra joins in powerfully, as the two lament not being able to create the space to hold onto a deeper and potentially impossible love.

‘Forever‘ marks the first new solo music from Day Wilson since the release of her highly praised 2021 debut album, ALPHA, and her first with new label XL Recordings / Remote Control. ALPHA served as a metaphorical coming out for Day Wilson, finding her openly and honestly tapping into her queerness for the first time as a storyteller. A breathtakingly confident and sensual Day Wilson emerged as a front runner in a new generation of quiet storm-inspired artists, Pitchfork even comparing her sonically to the queen of the movement, Anita Baker.

Day Wilson’s musical touchstones reach even further, twisting elements of folk, gospel and R&B into the silky DNA that makes her romantic and often existential musings so intoxicating. A few months after album release, fellow Toronto native and North Star of the music industry, Drake immortalized early album favorite ‘Mountains‘, co-written by Babyface, by sampling it in the chart topping radio hit ‘Fair Trade’ featuring Travis Scott. Day Wilson also gained praise for the supergroup remix of her song ‘Take Care Of You’ featuring Syd, joined by other landmark queer female artists King Princess, Amaarae and Meshell Ndegeocello. Most recently, she joined UK producer SG Lewis and Channel Tres on the disco- infused ‘Fever Dreamer’. Thus far, Day Wilson has earned Juno, Polaris and Libera nominations, marking an early and undeniable era of music in a soon to be legendary canon.

Sydney indie outfit THE CHERUBS debut new single ‘NAUSEA’

by the partae August 22, 2023
written by the partae

Photo Credit: James Winthrop, Dylan Clark

Driven sonically by a myriad influences that have made their sound fit in the ballpark of artists like Parcels, LCD Soundsystem and New Order, Sydney indie duo The Cherubs make their debut with vibrancy, revealing the first official cab off the rank –  ‘Nausea’.

As the first hint of the band’s forthcoming music ‘Nausea’ demonstrates not just a clear, tight band dynamic, but an overarching sense of fun that listeners can anticipate to be threaded through their music as the rest of 2023 rolls out.

‘Nausea’ rides a wave of nostalgia – the guitars and hooks throwback to a Joy Division, The Smiths and almost Ultravox-esque heyday – while keeping the core sound of the arrangement relevant and fresh.

Recording ‘Nausea’ with Peter Holz (Vance Joy, Gang of Youths), The Cherubs lean into rich, fun instrumentation on ‘Nausea’ – making their introduction one to remember.

“This song came together on the final days of us writing the ep. In fact, Dylan wrote the guitar and lyrics overnight while babysitting two cats and the next day we jammed it out as a band. It was a very quick song to write, what with not over thinking the arrangement, rather letting the guitars call-and-response be the hook and allow the lyrics to tell somewhat of a statement against it all.”

THE CHERUBS

For the ‘Nausea’ music video, The Cherubs linked up with Liam Clark as director/editor, Ian Tyley on cinematography and camera ops, as well as students from SAE to bring the concept and performance to life. With high energy at the forefront of the project, The Cherubs made the visuals striking and to the point.

“The music video was shot in half a day at Good Egg Studios in Riverstone.  It’s worth noting Tim Berner on bass was attacked by a cactus the day of shooting and as a result had to be replaced by a dear friend and guitarist José Herández.”

THE CHERUBS

For fans of artists like Mildlife, Leisure or DIIV, The Cherubs are creating music that stems from years of experience writing and performing with some of Australia’s best groups. Spending the past decade as session musicians and members of bands for artists including Go-Jo, Nicole Millar, Nyxen, Little Sea, The Flowers, and more, The Cherubs bring years of experience to their own project – creating a fresh vibe that they are keen to roll out and expand upon in 2023!

LIVE NATION’S ONES TO WATCH gears up for BIGSOUND edition in Brisbane this September! Showcasing artists to receive $10,000 Live Nation Touring Grant as part of Live Nation’s commitment to supporting their careers

by the partae August 22, 2023
written by the partae

It has been a huge year for Live Nation’s game-changing live music discovery series ONES TO WATCH, when it comes to the unearthing of fantastic Australian talent. And the momentum isn’t stopping as 2023 rolls into its second half, with the announcement of a brand new instalment of the series in Meanjin/Brisbane, taking place during BIGSOUND this September 6.

Taking place during the Australian music industry’s largest conference and showcase festival, Live Nation brings its own flavour to BIGSOUND, with ONES TO WATCH Backed By VODAFONE, providing the massive stage at the Fortitude Music Hall as a platform for their next exciting trio of artists to demonstrate why they are going to be the next ones to watch.

Selected to perform at September’s ONES TO WATCH Backed By VODAFONE event  is Sydney pop artist Ūla, Gold Coast indie-pop performer Bella Amor, and Melbourne pop songwriter Keenan Te. All three represent unique perspectives and takes on pop music; all three are refreshing entries to the Australian music landscape — providing stage presence and musical skill that has Live Nation excited about the careers that lay ahead.

Ūla has built a strong following of over 1.6 million already, a natural performer and multi-instrumentalist who has become a name the industry is already turning their heads for, courtesy of music that has racked up over 13.5 million streams to date. Having supported the likes of Amy Shark, The Veronicas and Tyne-James Organ, Ūla’s performance chops have been fast developing, as her debut EP project continues to be refined and prepared to be unleashed.

Hailing from the Gold Coast, Bella Amor’s vocals and songwriting style have been intriguing and exciting industry and fans alike since her track ‘Beauty’ began turning heads in 2020. Inspired by the soulful and rich tones permeating music by the likes of Matt Corby and YEBBA, Bella Amor brings this depth together with her sharp and witty perspective of young adulthood. Singles released in recent years, such as 2022’s ‘can’t get laid’, ‘all my friends are high’ and 2023’s ‘sentimental’ reflect Bella’s artistic talent; music anchored by emotional explorations and honest observations on life.

Keenan has been musical from a young age, developing his songwriting skills out of his Melbourne bedroom, though having learned guitar and piano as a child. Debuting videos of himself performing to TikTok in 2020, Keenan’s profile was quick to rise, amassing over 1.7 million followers – his videos accruing over 200 million views. Capturing the attention of international superstars including Meghan Trainor, Addison Rae, Dan + Shay and more in the last few years, Keenan’s original music – including 2021’s ‘Dependent’ – has made him a global name. With over 70 million streams worldwide, Keenan has continued to flesh out his own unique songwriting influences in new music, making the projects he has on the near horizon exciting to anticipate.

Hosted by Tait McGregor, this ONES TO WATCH Backed By VODAFONE event will see one of the country’s best content creators and music journalists return to facilitate the night. A diehard Australian music champion and fan, McGregor previously hosted Eora/Sydney’s ONES TO WATCH event earlier this year, bringing natural charm and enthusiasm to the role – making her a natural choice for the Meanjin/Brisbane edition.

Having curated the last three ONES TO WATCH showcases, Live Nation promoter Paul Lynch is again excited for the latest installment, noting “After last year’s successful showcase, key members of the music industry are already flagging Ones To Watch as a must-see event at BIGSOUND this year. Ūla, Keenen Te & Bella Amor are three artists that we have had our eye on for a while now and are very excited to present such a talented line up, to key industry forces at BIGSOUND.”

With successful events taking place in Naarm/Melbourne and Eora/Sydney already spotlighting the incredible talents of artists including Lola Scott, STUMPS, Sam McGovern, PANIA, Mitch Santiago and BOY SODA, the ONES TO WATCH series has become an in-demand event within the Australian industry.

Invite only, ONES TO WATCH Backed By VODAFONE gathers an audience of key industry buyers and professionals together to witness these talented individuals perform, but ultimately, the event is an opportunity for the artists to gain meaningful industry pathways and connections.

And as continued investment into these emerging artists’ careers, Live Nation will be contributing $10,000 to each participating performer to go towards Live Nation-curated touring activity. Including, but not limited to, showcases and club shows, this financial boost provides additional support from Live Nation to these artists, ensuring that the momentum ONES TO WATCH Backed By VODAFONE can help generate, will keep building.

“For the second year running, we proudly take our Ones To Watch showcase to BIGSOUND. The program is a huge priority for us – we get to spotlight the immense talent of these acts to the industry while providing exciting development and touring opportunities, and through leveraging our global network we can connect Ones To Watch artists with fans worldwide.”
ROGER FIELD, PRESIDENT OF LIVE NATION ASIA PACIFIC

Since its establishment in North America, the ONES TO WATCH series has been able to support and promote artists such as Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and Halsey early in their careers. So far in Australia, ONES TO WATCH has platformed artists including Forest Claudette, Teenage Joans, Carla Wehbe, ZPLUTO, WIIGZ, Hoodzy, East AV3, Colourblind and Saint Lane at events around the country.

Featuring ground-breaking home-grown music artists alongside international sensations, provocative and hilarious theatre, exhibitions showcasing exquisite photography, textile art and installations as well as a book launch and talk, MELT will take over Brisbane Powerhouse from November 11 – 26.

Brisbane Powerhouse Artistic Director and CEO Kate Gould said Melt is changing gear in 2023, with a program that radiates the vibrant diversity of queer culture.

“Melt 2023 is an explosion of creativity blending music, visual art and theatre to deliver our audiences an amazing program on the dancefloor, in the gallery and across our theatres. What better way to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ community than with a kaleidoscope of performers and experiences curated by our diverse team at Brisbane Powerhouse.”

MUSIC

Leading UK dance artist Aluna, previously half of AlunaGeorge, will bring tracks from her latest solo release MYCELiUM that’s currently taking over dance floors around the world. In a not-to-be-missed double bill she’ll be joined by electronic producer and songwriter KUČKA, who has firmly established herself as a standout producer and vocalist, collaborating with artists such as Flume, A$AP Rocky, Vince Staples, SOPHIE and Kendrick Lamar.Grammy-nominated, dance-pop sensation Kah-Lo has collaborated with the likes of Selena Gomez and Diplo and has a catalogue of infectious tracks ready to roll for MELT including ‘Rinse & Repeat’ (with UK producer Riton), #1 debut single ‘Fast’, TikTok favourite ‘Fake’ and her latest ‘Drag Me Out’. She’ll be joined by First Nations artist Djanaba. Raised on traditional dance and song mashed with influences from Florence and the Machine, Birdy and SZA, Djanaba’s new single ‘Don’t Really Care’, produced by PNAU, is guaranteed to get you moving.

Since forming in Montreal in 2011, TOPS has become vastly influential, creating a niche for sophisticated pop in the world of indie music. Measured drumming, trademark guitar licks and lush keyboards support the unmistakable wistful voice of Jane Penny.  The result is a collection of soft rock-infused pop hits and signature ballads that cover a range of moods and a complex emotional realm set within a unique groove.

Award-winning ensemble Matt Hsu’s Obscure Orchestra is comprised of 20+ BIPOC, First Nations, disabled, non-binary and trans artists. Their new alt-pop and experimental work “Companions” carefully considers the accessibility requirements of the performers, including light, motion, sound, and physical accessibility. These elements become the companions, or friends, that shape compositional process.

Channelling Sleep Token and The Prodigy, peppered with hints of Banks and London Grammar, queer-lectro pop band Alter Boy’s indie dance-pop mashes modern R&B, dark beats and haunting vocals. Fronted by hard-of-hearing vocalist Molly Priest, and Auslan Interpreter Luke Eastman, Alter Boy boldly evoke and exercise accessibility and inclusion, with all songs performed alongside in Auslan. They’ll be joined by a Sydney based alt-pop singer and songwriter, June Jones. Jones heads to Brisbane with new single ‘Good Girl’ in tow and after playing everywhere from Brunswick Music Festival to Sydney Mardi Gras.

In 2020 Western Sydney-raised artist Keiynan Lonsdale released his debut album ‘Rainbow Boy’, catching the ears of Billboard, GQ, Rolling Stone, Vogue, Interview Mag, & gaining him the nomination for ‘Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist’ at the 2021 GLAAD Music Awards. Now poised to release his sophomore album, Keiynan is set to dive deeper into his R&B roots. Keiynan will be joined by Naarm/Melbourne-based queer alt-pop artist, Keelan Mak, who’ll have you crying in the disco and feeling great about it. Keelan’s reflections on candid, 20-somethings heartbreak, mix perfectly with soft, lullaby-esque vocal, alternative electronica and hook driven choruses.

THEATRE

Artists and performers, Luke George and Daniel Kok, exploit the physical properties of rope and knots to unpick the boundaries of desire, trust, consent and communion between artist and audience in Bunny. To unravel shared lines of connection, to suspend tension and to unleash collective desires, Kok and George look to macramé, sailors’ knots, Chinese knots and rope bondage to weave together an interactive and intimate experience of collectivity.  Touring to 15 cities across Asia, Europe and North America (including the Venice Biennale) Bunny returns to Australia for this special season.

From internationally acclaimed writer and one of the UK’s most prominent trans voices, Travis Alabanza (Burgerz), comes the Australian premiere of Overflow, an entirely trans production and “a future classic” (Evening Standard), directed by Dino Dimitriadis. Overflow takes the audience on a hilarious and devastating tour of women’s bathrooms – who is allowed in and who is kept out. Cornered into a flooding toilet cubicle and determined not to be rescued again, Rosie (Janet Anderson) distracts herself with memories of bathroom encounters. Drunken heart-to-hearts by dirty sinks, friendships forged in front of crowded mirrors, and hiding together from trouble. But with her panic rising and no help on its way, can she keep her head above water?

VISUAL ART EXHIBITIONS – FREE

One of Australia’s most interesting and consequential multidisciplinary artists, Paul Yore’s BECOME WHAT YOU ARE brings together a suite of Yore’s intricate textile works, interrogating popular culture, nationalism, neo-liberalism, consumerism, and sexuality. This stunning exhibition draws on a vast array of recycled materials, forms, texts and images and deploys laborious and time-honoured craft methodologies such as embroidery, quilting, mosaic, collage, and bricolage. The exhibition also features selected garments drawn from a collaboration with celebrated fashion house Romance Was Born for their 2023 winter collection, Stronger Together.

Internationally-celebrated performance artists The Huxleys’ Places of Worship photographic series explores the fading magic of supernatural worlds in which Melbourne-based performance and visual artists, Will and Garrett Huxley cast themselves as exquisite outsiders, isolated and ornate, existing on the fringes of places and the margins of society. It presents a longing for the precious jewels of earth to be celebrated and adored by emulating the outrageous beauty they interpret in nature through their handmade costumes and styling. These photographs invite the viewer to find a similar beauty in explosively queer bodies, yearning for difference to be marvelled at, worshipped and praised.

New York-based Australian artists and creative technologists Tin Nguyen & Edward Cutting are driven by a deep curiosity for the natural world and the intricate ways we are connected to it. Tin & Ed use art to envision the world through this lens of interconnectedness. Multitudes is a series of playful outdoor installations and experiences that illuminate the borderless dimension between art and science, the physical and the digital, the human and the more than human.

BOOK TOUR

Join multi-award-winning comedian and writer Rhys Nicholson as they talk about anxiety disorder, a complicated relationship with food and a book deal.  In Dish, through a series of revealing stories, intrusive thoughts and a recipe here and there, they’re hoping to ruminate, gossip and generally have a deeply private, wide-ranging conversation with themselves about a whole bunch of life’s smaller questions.  ‘This Dish is served hot, funny and sincerely fresh!’ – RuPaul.

American Express is the Major Partner of Melt Festival 2023. The Festival is also proudly supported by our valued partners, B105, GOA, Herbert Smith Freehills, Ovolo The Valley and Q News.

King Stingray to headline BLAKTIVISM concert as part of ALWAYS LIVE

BLAKTIVISM
Hamer Hall, 1 December

Arts Centre Melbourne is thrilled to announce the third iteration of BLAKTIVISM in Melbourne as part of ALWAYS LIVE with the next generation, King Stingray, leading the line-up of living legends and rising voices of First Nations musical activism at Hamer Hall on Friday 1 December.

Stand up and join Tasman Keith, Bart Willoughby, Emma Donovan, Deline Briscoe, Suga Cane Mamas and Sorong Samarai and more, for a collaborative set, performing together as the galvanised chorus of an unstoppable movement.

Curated by Artistic Director Deline Briscoe, BLAKTIVISM 2023 will explore Skylore, the Lore that connects all First Nations cultures across the country through stories in the sky; following the journey from the rise of the Evening Star in the Kulin Nations to the rise of the Morning Star in West Papua.

“Our cultural connections run deeper than colonial borders. BLAKTIVISM connects our BLAK Artivists across generations, across oceans and across genres. At the core of it all, is song,” said Briscoe.

In Aboriginal culture, Lore refers to the stories, customs, beliefs and spirituality of Aboriginal people. It was given to them from the Dreaming and passed down through generations by their ancestors, guiding their everyday lives. It is, however, important to recognise the diverse range of Aboriginal peoples throughout Australia and that each language group has their own unique spirituality, beliefs and Lore.

Hailing from Northeast Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, the fresh sounds of Yolŋu rock band King Stingray will follow the explosive BLAKTIVISM set. The five-piece outfit have cemented themselves as one of Australia’s eminent home-grown acts in a meteoric rise performing songs with lyrics in both English and Yolŋu Matha. Listen as they weave an ancient tradition of songlines dating back tens of thousands of years with modern surf-rock, connecting to home and family through each song.

The evening will begin with Mundanai which means embrace: a ceremonial opening and an invitation for the many multicultural communities to heal together. It will be led by Songwmen from each clan group of the Kulin Nations – Dr Lou Bennett (Dja Dja Wurrung), Mandy Nicholson (Wurundjeri), Isobel Paipadjarook (Taungarrung), Renee Sweetman (Bunwurrung) and Corrina Eccles (Wadawarrung) – as they share the spirit of healing through the power of culture and the richness of ceremonial song.

BLAKTIVISM first burst onto Arts Centre Melbourne’s stage as part of Live at the Bowl in 2021. It was created in direct response to the global dialogue around the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 and Australia’s response to Indigenous sovereignty. By centring and celebrating Blak Cultures and Blak Artivism in this country, BLAKTIVISM has now become a platform for reconnecting ancient songs across the region in a powerful one-night only special event.
Stay tuned for more BLAKTIVISM artist announcements over the coming weeks.

This event is part of ALWAYS LIVE, a 17-day state-wide celebration of contemporary live music supported by the Victoria Government through Visit Victoria.

PLS&TY Returns With Fresh Dose of Music and New Sonic Direction on Swahili-Sung House Single “Your Love,” Featuring Sofiya Nzau

by the partae August 20, 2023
written by the partae

Artist: PLS&TY, Sofiya Nzau
Title: Your Love
Label: Self-release

PLS&TY is wasting no time after the release of his “3 Days, 2 Nights” EP last month, already back with another new single in the form of “Your Love,” a uniquely addictive global dance gem. The track is a fusion of tech and deep house, tribal music, and both Swahili and English vocals by Kenyan singer Sofiya Nzau. Her Swahili choral performance is a stunningly ethereal, wild soliloquy that will ignite the fire of your heart, especially when paired with PLS&TY‘s diverse production prowess that rides on deep, groovy basslines and danceable tribal melodies. “Your Love” signifies PLS&TY‘s growth as an artist post “3 Days, 2 Nights,” indicating that he’s only getting started with the new and unexpected sonic styles. Read on for more inspiration behind “Your Love“:

“The ‘3 Days, 2 Nights‘ project reignited a fire within that had been, admittedly, waning, and stands on new ground for the PLS&TY sound moving forward. I also believe that with ‘3 Days, 2 Nights,’ listeners caught a glimpse into the PLS&TY sound no longer being confined by any one genre or style. Now, ‘Your Love‘ kickstarts a new chapter of the post-EP dose of music that entails primarily club & DJ-set-focused material. ‘Your Love‘ is unique in that the vocals are sung largely in Swahili, and extends well across continents and borders.” – PLS&TY

Tommy Leas, a Florida native – better known as PLS&TY – is burgeoning into the electronic dance music scene with his unique sound: languid bass, captivating vocals, and enough upbeat melodies to make anybody feel good. His music has amassed over 100 million streams across platforms – that’s if you don’t include a feature in a Hershey‘s chocolate television commercial that has now reached over 1 billion views. PLS&TY‘s singles have charted on Billboard, have consecutively reached #1 on iTunes four times, and have been remixed by Grammy-nominated Morgan Page, Rusko, Cazzette, Bondax, and YehMe2. Tommy has also toured a bevy of A-list festivals, including Shaky Beats, Breakaway, Electric Forest, EDC Vegas, and more. After releasing his debut “Very Special” EP, which featured platinum-selling artists like Sean Kingston, Alex Aiono (of Netflix‘s “Finding Ohana“), Wifisfuneral, and more, 2020-2022 saw PLS&TY become an early adopter of the emerging NFT technology. PLS&TY has co-designed skateboard deck NFTs for Tony Hawk, as well as visuals for celebrity athletes like Floyd Mayweather and even members of Congress. Most recently, PLS&TY‘s NFT projects were referenced in Billboard at the #3 and #10 positions of Top Music NFT Sales in August and September of 2022 alongside Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and David Bowie. 2023 sees PLS&TY emerging with new music and an ever-growing global community of fans following his art, all while wielding the lighthearted “mind your manners” and “please and thank you” catchphrases.
