Iconic late night burlesque cocktail bar ‘Low 302’ to be reinvigorated under new owners

by the partae December 31, 2022
written by the partae

One of Sydney’s most iconic live entertainment and music hot spots, Low 302, is embarking on an exciting revamp as its new owner takes the reins.  Already a wellknown establishment due to its saucy lineup of cabaret performances and trend-setting DJ mixes, new licensee and general manager Luke Reimann is keen to put his mark on the place, reinvigorating its mojo with a delectable range of stunning new cocktails, wines, spirits and beers, a new dining menu and even more live music gigs.

“Low 302 is one of the oldest running cocktail bars and live music venues in Sydney, so it’s an absolute honour to be taking over the management of this iconic and historic establishment and making it our own while continuing its long history. It’s the best way to come into the business, because I already know it well.  But I’m here to change it up, to re-energise Low 302 to new highs!” Reimann said.

Old business, new business

“Many Sydneysiders were really upset when Frankie’s Pizza announced their closure due to the area being earmarked for redevelopment, with plans for a new metro train station to be built in the very same spot. Frankie’s has been around for a long, long time, well over ten years, and it’s been a go-to place for those wanting a late-night meal and drink,” Reimann said.

“We’re really sorry to see Frankie’s go, but the good news is that Low 302 is here to fill the gap that Frankie’s is leaving behind plus we are re-energising all the great offerings that Low 302 has been delivering to the market for so many years.

“So the next time you have a late night craving for a drink and something to eat with fabulous entertainment in a venue that is inviting and ‘New York’ kind of swanky, you know where to go – Low 302.”

New menu

“Low 302 is also rolling out a new evening dining menu that will include a range of all-night bar snacks as well as small plates and al e carte meals,” Reimann said.

“Whether you are popping in for a drink after work, watching a show or spending the evening with us for dinner, our new menu will include a broad range of food offerings to suit just about every taste and need. Our menu will feature plenty of traditional options as well as some curated specialties.

“Our drinks menu is where things get truly exciting. We have an extensive list of only the finest cocktails, wine, beer and spirits. Our drinks and cocktails menu covers all of the classics along with a special House List which have been specially created and prepared by some of Sydney’s finest bartenders.”

Music mix

“Low 302 has always been known for our music mix and we will be stepping up our fantastic and diverse range of acts and performers,” Reimann added.

“Get ready to be mesmerised by our stunning and provocative burlesque and cabaret performances and entranced by our dance and theatre pickings. And when the weekend rolls around and you’re ready to pick up the pace, on Friday and Saturday nights, our DJs and killer live bands will have you hitting the dance floor with their hits so you can groove the night away!”

Ringing in the New Year

“As the year draws to a close and workplaces start to unwind, everybody just wants to let loose, relax and enjoy themselves,” Reimann said.

“If you are looking for a great venue with loads of good food, and plenty of awesome music, there’s no better place than Low 302. There is a lot to enjoy as we ramp up this little beauty of a venue with all of our new offerings and entertainment additions. Low 302 is now the new ‘go to’ in Sydney – recapturing the essence of comfortable fun sassy drinks, eats and entertainment.”

About Low 302

Now under new management, Low 302 is one of Sydney’s oldest running cocktail bars and live music venues. Modelled on the classic New York style of the 80s and 90s, it is Sydney’s top pick for good food and live music. Its extensive cocktail and drinks list has been mixed by some of Sydney’s top bartenders. Live entertainment acts are varied and eclectic, going from blues nights and cabaret shows to trendy DJ mixes and killer live bands, pumping out chart-topping hits. Low 302 is fully licensed for dine-in and also caters for functions and parties. Private hire and large group bookings are available.

Where are you currently based?

Scarborough, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

How did you first start making music?

I first started making music when I was playing around on Garageband on my iPhone and used Apple AirPods to make a song. It was called Myself which I put out in my first year of highschool, I did get a lot of criticism and people appreciated my art. From that moment, I loved what people told me, it made me happy. I just knew that I had to start working on my craft and that I should create more songs.

What’s been happening recently?

Just released my new song Suits On featuring Stay Swaying on all platforms. Been collaborating with artists abroad from the UK and local Toronto artists.

What influenced the sound and songwriting of Suits On?

It was strongly influenced by a slow guitar and low 808’s produced by ProdXyv and BENHEET It has an up-beat yet mellow vibe to it, making it a perfect christmas song for karaoke challenges. Putting together experiences that were happening at the moment, Sway and I had put it all together in a song. With the hard beat switches, and classic kick drum the beat is finished as a certified RNB winter track.

How has Toronto affected your music?

The engagement from Toronto is absurdly high. Toronto pages haven’t been showing me love. Toronto music mainly revolved around the violence and that is something that I stay out of entirely. Taking my own route, I know Toronto gon’ notice me soon over time.

What is your best memory from the video shoot?
Just the process of making the skits and shooting the shots with my suit was the best memory. The creativity that the videographer, Sway and I had when shooting different scenes during the video, for example the mirror scene as it switched from Yasmeen, the model to Sway.

Where, when and who did you film with?
We shot this music video around my birthday in June, and filmed it with ShotAt11 in a photo studio that was a partially greenhouse.

Who are your favourite artists?
My favourite artists are The Weeknd, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, J.I the Prince of N.Y and RealestK.

Are you happy with conversations being had about your music?

I came to the conclusion that you actually have no influence over the setting or manner in which a discussion about your music occurs. Everyone has their own opinions, which they frequently voice online. I am aware of my supporters. I do read and keep up with everything that is happening. I value the criticism, and I take to heart everything that spurs my artistic development.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Askae is an artist I truly love listening to at the moment.

What do you like to do away from music?
I play basketball, I feel it gets a lot off my mind and I just love the game. Recently, I started to meditate and read spiritual and self development books.

What’s planned for 2023?
I got a lot of music lined up for the year, just trying to shoot the music videos on my own time to plan out my marketing strategies. Just trying to grow as an artist and do better and more progress than the work I put in 2022.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Favourite food has to be Lobster Thermidor and favourite place to hangout has to be the Harbor 60 Steakhouse in Downtown Toronto.

Alok Closes 2022 with “Surrender” – Stunning Collaboration with His Protege ÜHÜ and Producer Duo YOU. Out Now on CONTROVERSIA

by the partae December 30, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: Alok & ÜHÜ
Title: Surrender (feat. YOU)
Label: CONTROVERSIA

Download / Stream

Just 1 week after releasing his unexpected g-house track “Kill Me,” Alok returns with a new single – “Surrender.” Showcasing his prowess as a producer, Alok takes a new sonic direction with this dark progressive gem, which rides upon deep, growling basslines and soulful vocals. “Surrender” packs plenty of emotional punch while incorporating an underground vibe that’s suitable for late-night dance floors. For “Surrender” Alok teamed up with his protege from CONTROVERSIA – ÜHÜ, and YOU, made of Andrew “BullySongs” Bullimore and Josh Record, known for collaborations with Armin van Buuren, Galantis, and as co-writers for some of the most recognized dance music hits. It makes for a strong finish to his incredible year, which held breakthrough collaborations with Bastille, John Martin, Luis Fonsi, Alan Walker, and more, hit singles such as “Deep Down” with Ella Eyre, Kenny Dope and Never Dull and “All By Myself” with Ellie Goulding and Sigala, and remixes for the likes of Marshmello and Khalid. With the official return of clubbing and festivals this year, Alok played hundreds of shows across the globe, including performing at the United Nations to kick off NYC’s Global Climate Week. It’s all up from here for Alok, so stay tuned for what’s in store for 2023.

Alok

With a strong resume full of remixes and collaborations with artists such as The Rolling Stones to Zara Larsson, from Jason Derulo to Tove Lo, and more, Brazilian Alok has gained an immense international following and is currently having his global breakout moment. He already has the second-largest Instagram following of any electronic artist globally (28M), and his 20M devoted monthly listeners on Spotify have made him the most listened to Brazilian artist in the world. In 2022, he was named the 4th Best DJ in the world, according to the prestigious DJ Mag Top 100 DJ Poll. In 2019, Alok was nominated for the International Dance Music Awards for his hit remix of the Meduza single “Piece of Your Heart,” and he also worked with global pop sensation Dua Lipa for the official remix of her hit single “Physical.” Recently he also collaborated with Grammy-award pop sensation John Legend on “In My Mind” and with renegade vocalist John Martin on “Wherever You Go” and lended his talents to remix Ed Sheeran‘s “Shivers.” The sky is the limit for the Brazilian superstar.

ÜHÜ

Gabriel Murilo Mello‘s newest project for the post-pandemic era comes in the form of ÜHÜ, a bold brand with plenty of existing versatility and experience. Since 2010, Mello has been DJing and producing in his home country of Brazil, gracing the stages of festivals such as Tomorrowland Brasil, EDC Brasil, Green Valley, Dream Valley, PUMP, Rio Music Conference, and more. His music has been supported by David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Alok, Tiësto, Steve Aoki, Hardwell, Showtek, and many others. As a producer’s producer, co-producer, and composer, Gabriel Mello amassed over 1B streams across all digital platforms. With all this information, ÜHÜ is born: a startup but already experienced artist whose musical identity brings references from deep house, progressive, and tech-house.

CONTROVERSIA

Alok‘s CONTROVERSIA continues to go from strength to strength, and this latest release is another fine example of a label making all the right moves to maintain its impressive forward momentum. Since its inception in June 2019, CONTROVERSIA has accumulated over 1B Spotify streams thanks to its remarkable family of artists, including Yves V, Alan Walker, Bhaskar, Alle Farben, Vintage Culture, and more. All of whom have helped CONTROVERSIA quickly establish itself as one of the most successful independent labels in dance music today.

The Botany View Hotel now Sydney’s ‘go to’ for karaoke

by the partae December 30, 2022
written by the partae

If you needed proof that Aussies are getting back out for dinner, drinks and parties, you only have to turn up to Sydney’s iconic Botany View Hotel on King Street in Newtown on Monday nights.

According to Luke Reimann, licensee of the Botany View Hotel, the popularity of karaoke is going through the roof. While bookings for parties, work gatherings and end of year functions are coming in left right and centre, a lot of people are enquiring about karaoke.

“We do karaoke on Monday nights at the hotel, trivia on Tuesday, mixed bag of shows on Wednesday, jazz on Thursdays, barbecues and bands on Fridays and New Orleans jazz on Sundays,” Reimann said.

“Mondays are proving super special because people are obviously fed up singing in the shower and want to get out and test their singing skills at our karaoke. Monday nights are pumping.”

Reimann said that the old karaoke classics are still strong favourites with Aussies.

“Even though we have been decimated by COVID for the last few years, Aussies have come out of lockdown still fixated on some of the old favourites, David Bowie Let’s Dance, The Clash Rock the Casbah, Elvis Presley Suspicious Minds and TLC Waterfalls, just to mention a few,” Reimann said.

“In fact, if anything, retro is more popular than ever. Regardless of age, young and old are choosing to sing the old 80s classics. People like that era, it signifies good times and people are wanting boppy simple fun tunes they can sing to.”

“There is something about karaoke, it draws everyone in. You wouldn’t get up on stage and grab a microphone and sing to a large audience anywhere else, but in a comfortable and cosy pub environment amongst friends, a few drinks and a great karaoke song list, people lose their inhibitions and embrace the freedom of karaoke and they pump out a few tunes.”

“I think people are sick of singing in the shower. They want to get out and have some fun. Karaoke gives the ability to have fun in a safe environment. It is a great leveller.”

Since opening back up fully post COVID, the Botany View Hotel has been showcasing some of Australia’s best local musicians. It has become a leading location for live music, good food, the city’s biggest range of curated cocktails and craft beers, parties and events, and other fun-filled activities.

“The great thing about karaoke is that it is not only good fun, it is also a great bonding  activity too.  Everyone gets a turn or a few turns and when you have had enough you can listen to everyone else, hit the bar or get some food. And if you feel like real music, you can come in when we have live music happening during the week and on weekends.”

“Music definitely lifts the mood and it is great to see so many people getting back into music whether it is karaoke or listening to a live band.  It is about time.”

About Botany View Hotel

With a long history to its name, the Botany View Hotel is located along King Street in Newton, Sydney. Now under a new licensee and renovated during COVID, the Botany View Hotel is a thriving destination with plenty to offer. The hotel’s event calendar is jam packed with an eclectic line up of emerging and established Australian musicians and patrons can enjoy a meal, jazz night, trivia night or host a party at one of the function rooms or in the  newly upgraded roof top garden.

SPECIAL D. X DJ SAMMY & CARISMA PRINCE OF LOVE 2023

by the partae December 22, 2022
written by the partae

“Prince of Love” was one of DJ Sammy´s first productions. The Spanish Star-DJ and hit producer, twice listed on DJ Mag’s Top 100, first released this single in 1997 with Carisma.

It charted at #24 on the German charts, reached #1 in the European dance charts and stayed for 15 weeks on the hitlist.

Now the Hamburg-based DJ and hit producer Special D. has taken the track and refreshed it completely.

“The track `Prince of Love´ has always been something special to me, the first one for me in the role of a lead artist, as well my first chart hit as a main artist. I received so many requests for cover versions or new mixes from all over the world, but declined every single one… except this one time!  That was when Special D. reached out to me. I’ve known him for quite a long time now and couldn’t say no to his idea of taking the original vocals of Carisma and putting it together with his sense of the song. So it came out fresh and absolutely upfront,” explains the DJ-star.

Special D. aka Dennis Horstmann is a German DJ and dance music-producer, who landed a hit in Europe with the cover of Nena´s “Nur geträumt” back in 2003.

Top 4 in Ireland, top 6 in UK, top 10 in the Netherlands and top 14 in Germany paved the way for him up to the TMF Awards, which are considered the most important music awards in the Netherlands, in which he won the ´best international dance artist´ category.

His other chart hits include “Home Alone”, “Nothing I Won’t Do”, “You” or “Here I Am“. Also the “Suck My Dick!” number from his “Dickheadz” side project (together with Andy Judge) was even picked for the Hollywood blockbuster “Crank: High Voltage” with Jason Statham. Recently, Special D. collaborations with Le Shuuk (“You”) as well as W&W and Harris & Ford (“Come With Me”) caused a stir on the international dance charts and streaming portals.

DJ Sammy is one of the most famous DJs and producers in the world. With over 20 million records sold, plus countless awards, the global player from Mallorca is one of the world’s most successful electronic music producers, who had his breakthrough with “Heaven” in 2001. It surpassed 2 million record sales in Europe and Australia alone, reached #2 on the US Billboard’s HOT 100, before climbing to #1 in GB in 2002. Many TV appearances and award wins all over the world followed, and he entered the prestigious DJ Mag Top 100 DJ rankings (2005 #92, 2006 #61).

“Prince of Love 2023” unleashes a new vibe from Special D., DJ Sammy and Carisma on Kontor Records!

There will be all-new stages, the signature sophisticated production, surprise guests, endless winter sports fun and electronic music covering a wider spectrum than ever from DJs and live acts across two weekends from April 7-9th, and April 14-16th.

The first wave of artists includes Jamie XX, Fatboy Slim, Black Coffee, ARTBAT, DJ Tennis, Blond:ish, Who Made Who (live), Adriatique, Monolink (live), Magda, Modal Tune (Guti b2b Sarkis live), Themba, Jeff Mills, Zip, Loco Dice b2b Seth Troxler, Luciano b2b Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Sven Väth, Arapu b2b Gescu, Archie Hamilton, Cobblestone Jazz (live), East End Dubs, Janeret, Manda Moor, Raresh, Sonja Moonear plus many more to come. Head to https://capricesfestival.com for tickets.

Over the last two decades, Caprices has put Crans-Montana back on the map. It was once hugely popular in the 70s and 80s but fell out of fashion until Caprices introduced it to a new generation. In that time the festival has grown and evolved to become one of the world’s premier underground events with not just top-level music but also endless daytime adventures in the Alps and body and soul-enriching experiences.

As such there are many things that stand Caprices apart, from breathtaking panoramic views across the Alps to next level audio-visual technology, luxury gastronomic experiences, an eco-museum, mountain activities, to multiple spa and wellness centres. For adrenaline junkies there are 140 km of pistes for skiing and snowboarding, a next level snowpark, husky sledding and so much more.

For this special anniversary edition there will be five stages split across day and night, two by day and three by night. Each stage has its own unique theme with fantastically realised producing and added performing arts elements such as dancers, actors, audiovisuals and art installations that brings the whole magical experience to life.

By day there is the world renowned Modernity Stage, an iconic glasshouse at 2,200m up the Swiss Alps that will welcome big name DJs for some unforgettable musical memories. The Club stage, meanwhile, is a concrete stage attached to the Modernity Stage with a glass wall overlooking the Alps and soundtracked by some fresh talents from around the world.
By night, The Moon Stage comes alive. It has been an integral part of Caprices festival from the early years and has famously cutting edge audiovisual production that adds an extra dimension to every single set. Then comes the Forest Stage, a forest themed 2000-capacity stage which will transport partygoers deep into alpine forests. Last but not least is the Dome Stage with another high-level audio visual experience and classy underground sounds.

This year, Weekend One (April 7-9th) welcomes Jamie XX, Fatboy Slim, Black Coffee, Artbat, Monolink (live), Adriatique, DJ Tennis, Blond:ish, Who Made Who (live), 8Kays, Amine K, Brina Knauss, Fiona Kraft, Layla Benitez, Magda, Modal Tune (Guti b2b Sarkisi live), Themba and Yokoo.

Mind Against drop surprise single ‘Dreamcast’ on Afterlife Out Now

by the partae December 19, 2022
written by the partae

Mind Against further their fruitful relationship with Afterlife, dropping their cinematic, compulsively danceable single ‘Dreamcast’, following their 2021 ‘Changes’ EP on the imprint.

Already very much on the music map, the Italian-born, Berlin-based duo released their eagerly awaited ‘fabric presents…’ compilation in September to critical acclaim from the likes of Vogue Italia, The Vinyl Factory, Mixmag, DJ Mag (Compilation of the Month), The Arts Desk… Mind Against aka Alessandro and Federico Fognini command the area between widely and wildly welcome dance fuel and technical mastery with deceptive ease.

‘Dreamcast’: a thumping beat and fuzzy synths launch house heaven, lent gravitas by anthemic slow choral chords, as off-beat clanging notes trip up and intrigue the mind and the relentless speed makes dancing compulsory. Euphoric builds and drops kickstart brain chemical production and bookend breaks with blizzards of portentous synth phrases.

The track has already won fans and inspired much joyful raving during their run of shows, including Time Warp NYC and Sao Paolo, Warehouse Project, plus the ever-iconic Afterlife Printworks and Art Basel. No doubt ‘Dreamcast’ will feature in festive clubbing and beyond into the new year.

‘Dreamcast’ is out now on Afterlife, save it here: https://lnk.to/Dreamcast

R3HAB and Mike Williams revisited their 2018 collaboration “Lullaby” to make a new captivating version of the iconic hit that’s perfect for activating chill mode. While the original packed a strong punch of classic big-room vibes, the new interpretation evokes serenity with organic, downtempo melodies that perfectly complement the ethereal vocals. Whether you’re pressing play to relax in the midst of the holidays or to wind down at the afters, R3HAB and Mike Williams‘ new take on “Lullaby” is sure to help you destress. The original version just surpassed 200M streams on Spotify alone and gathered 8 Gold and 4 Platinum certifications globally on the way. R3HAB recently released “Poison” with fellow dance music veterans Timmy Trumpet and W&W and Alan Walker‘s remix of his classic “All Around The World.” On the other hand, Mike Williams is currently riding the wave of a stream of releases on Spinnin’ Records, such as “When The Sun Is Gone,” “Best Part Missing,” “Ambush,” to name a few.

“Mike is a talented guy and I am happy to see his career taking off. We had the same vision for this record from the start, which made this an exciting and seamless production process. This record has a smooth and dreamy sound and a pulsing beat which has made it a staple in my sets lately. I hope it takes you on a journey as it did for us.” – R3HAB

“Really excited to release this edit of one of my biggest tracks and working with R3HAB is always a pleasure! I’m overwhelmed by all the people who still sing along this track during my sets and I hope everyone likes this version.” – Mike Williams

Multi-Platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the past fifteen years. From his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, to anthems such as Platinum-certified “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” to his collaborations with the likes of Ava Max, ZAYN, Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul, and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most forward-thinking artists in the game. His work has collected over 8B streams to date, including 1.1B in 2021 alone. R3HAB founded his label CYB3RPVNK in 2016, which has passed 4B streams across platforms since its inception. He is Spotify’s Most Discovered Artist, one of Spotify’s top 200 most streamed artists, ranked #13 on prestigious DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs chart, and has earned over 70 Gold and Platinum certificates. On top of that, he performed at the world’s top festivals, such as EDC, Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Balaton Sound, Coachella, Summer Sonic Festival, DWP Jakarta. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, R3HAB has earned his place as a household name in dance music.

Mike Williams‘s breakthrough came in 2017 as his hit “Feel Good,” a collab with non-other than Felix Jaehn, went sky high on radio, in playlists and streams, and gathered so far over 155M streams on Spotify. “The Beat” (75M) and “Wait Another Day” with Mesto (97M) followed and turned into huge hits as well. Piece by piece, Mike is conquering the world with his incredible melodies, club bangers, and catchy radio hits. For every new song that Mike begins, the piano is the solid start and base. Because of that recognizable style and sound he creates, he got to play at the most famous festivals like; Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Parookaville, World Club Dome, and Mysteryland, among others. Even during the pandemic, Mike found himself behind his decks, he flies around the world and does tours in Taiwan, Nepal, and China, but he also did not skip Europe, such as Croatia, Switzerland, and many other countries. When he’s back home from touring through the US, Canada, Asia, or Europe, you can find the down-to-earth Dutchie in his studio in Hilversum. But even on tour, he always finds a way to dive into the studio, whether it is a day off or during a writing session in Ibiza, Stockholm, or London, for example.

written by the partae

Artists: Various Artists
Title: CONTROVERSIA by Alok vol. 008
Label: CONTROVERSIA

Download / Stream

CONTROVERSIA‘s boss and heavyweight producer Alok returns with a brand new track of his own, leading the 8th edition of the label’s signature compilation series. His new bass-forward g-house work “Kill Me” opens the 14-track selection, setting an ominous and heavy-hitting tone for the rest of the sonic journey – the CONTROVERSIA crew isn’t messing around with this one! Along with previously released tracks like ÜHÜ & RUSHÖ‘s “Divide Us” and Kohen, Mert Can & Garonzos‘ “Overload,” there are no fewer than 10 exclusive and never before released records. In a true representation of the label’s ethos, Vol. 008 contains a diverse spectrum of electronic sounds, from the sultry vocal house “Skin” by B Martin, Tyson Bay and Bassbears to the emotive and dancefloor-friendly “Naked Emotions” from Tineway, Rodmotter and Volyri, as well as Yves V & Bhaskar‘s already well-known driving house tune “Round My Head,” remixed by Kohen & LIVA. Prior to the compilation, Alok himself recently joined forces with Ellie Goulding and Sigala on “All By Myself” on Sony Music, which just surpassed 20M Spotify streams, while the Brazilian artist’s Summer hit “Deep Down” with Ella Eyre and Kenny Dope, featuring Never Dull, is about to break 100M on the platform.

“This was a year of hard work, of several achievements by CONTROVERSIA, and for me it is a great joy to end 2022 with the last compilation of the year. We were able to bring together a team of incredible artists in this edition on several unreleased tracks, including one of mine that contains a sample from the ‘Ozark‘ series. I’m grateful for taking our label’s sound further and further. Thank you to everyone following along and I hope you enjoy listening as much as I do.” – Alok

Alok

With a strong resume full of remixes and collaborations with artists such as The Rolling Stones to Zara Larsson, from Jason Derulo to Tove Lo, and more, Brazilian Alok has gained an immense international following and is currently having his global breakout moment. He already has the second-largest Instagram following of any electronic artist globally (almost 28M), and his 20M devoted monthly listeners on Spotify have made him the most listened to Brazilian artist in the world. In 2021, he was named the 4th Best DJ in the world, according to the prestigious DJ Mag Top 100 DJ Poll.

VINNIN INTIMATELY MOVES ON FROM HIS EXPERIENCES BY PUTTING HIS “SUITS ON”

by the partae December 19, 2022
written by the partae

Vinnin, a Tamil-Malayali-Canadian musician, explores complex themes in his most recent song, “Suits On,” which was released last week. In contrast to his customary loud delivery, Vinnin chose a mellow melodic one, supported by Stay Swaying’s playboy serenade, a fellow Tamil-Canadian musician.

After a brief hook, the intelligent rapper launched into an extremely intimate rap about individuals he had previously left in the past.  When all things start off with, “They had me tripping in the past, I had to move on.” Vinnin shares his profound insights on how letting go of people who don’t serve him has impacted him as an artist and inspired him to concentrate on his objectives and purpose. Vinnin’s work has developed thematically around considering the intricacy of racial identity, and everyone is captivated by the way he conveys his traumatic memories through powerful raps.

The setting and vivid colours for “Suits On” go wonderfully with Vinnin’s distinctive style. Shot in a greenhouse, Vinnin and Stay Swaying represent how content they are right now with their formal dress, which makes them appear wealthy and confident. The track’s intensity and pride factor are increased by the use of colour and seemingly directed cinematography. The argument and uncomfortable situations are highlighted in the video. For instance, when scenes of a girl fighting and Stay Swaying are shown. The song is greatly improved by the video’s narrative components.

Vinnin was born in Scarborough, Canada, after his family fled the civil war in Sri Lanka and moved from India and Sri Lanka. Growing up in the Toronto suburbs, he felt like an outsider, was bullied in school which sparked his interest in hip hop to cope with his experiences.

Introducing … Sonnee

by the partae December 16, 2022
written by the partae

Still in his early twenties, Manchester producer Sonnee is making waves right now. His 2022 debut EP ‘Your Love’ snagged swift support from key tastemakers, including Jaguar’s ‘Dancefloor Moment’ on BBC Radio 1 with ‘Leave the Water Still’, a Selector Radio ‘After Dark’ mix, and regular spins and shout outs from Radio 1’s Sian Eleri and many more who connected with his emotive sound and skilful production.

Now London-based, Sonnee has brought new joy to dancefloors with single ‘Dancing Ain’t Enough’, featuring POLIÇA frontwoman Channy Leaneagh on vocals. The track has already hit over 1.2 million streams on Spotify alone, carving this newcomer’s mark deep in the dance music landscape. ‘Dancing Ain’t Enough’ is a gorgeous confection of shimmering synth strata with a softly insistent beat showcasing Channy’s sweet voice, given the Sonnee treatment to sound subtly pitch-shifted to give a mix of acoustic clarity with a nod to the 90s.

We grabbed some time with Sonnee to hear the process behind his production and the story behind this new track. Check it below…

Hey Sonnee, thanks for speaking with us! Where are we catching you today?

Hey The Partae! Thank you so much for me having me, I’m currently in my friend’s flat in East London where I’m looking after their Chameleon. Pretty random!!

Congrats on your new track ‘Dancing Ain’t Enough’. Where did the idea for this one come from?

The idea for this one came from that simple synth line & vocal line at the beginning. I must’ve listened back to the way those combined for about a week, before I was like ‘yeah, I need to make an actual song out of this’.

What was the process in the studio? Did it come together quite quickly?

Usually, tracks take me like two days to get the first draft done. This is the first track I left intentional room for a featured vocal on the first draft. Then we sent it to Channy of POLIÇA, she liked it, sent her amazingly beautiful vocals back & it kind of fell into place from there.

Generally, do you find new music comes to you quite fast and easily? Or do you prefer to lock yourself away in the studio a bit and develop tracks over a longer period of time?

This is always changing for me, some days I get an idea I’m really into within an hour, but then other days it can feel like I’ve completely forgotten everything and I’m starting again. I also used to rush tunes to being ‘finished’ as soon as possible but now I let them breathe a bit more, which I think helps them being better in the end as there is less stress in them. If that makes any sense haha.

You often use vocal /vocal samples in your tracks, but this one seems to be the most lyrical. Do you think this is a direction you’d like to go in, or plan to go in more in the future?

Vocals are my favourite thing to use when making a song, it’s always been like that. At the moment I’m definitely loving focusing on more lyrical stuff, so expect more of that. But there will definitely be just as many non-lyrical vocal tracks down the line too.

How does it feel having POLIÇA on the record? Can you remember the first time you heard her/their music generally? If so, how did it make you feel/what was your verdict?

It’s pretty mad to be honest. The first time I heard POLIÇA was watching Jools Holland with my parents as a kid. I was mesmerised. After that, my parents had the ‘Give You The Ghost’ album on repeat. It’s a proper full-circle moment that I could’ve never seen coming.

You’re making waves in your career already even at this early stage. How did you get into production and music in the first place?

I used to watch my brothers on FL studio for hours. I’ve never said this publicly but half the reason I started making music myself was because one time my brother was recreating ‘Crazy Frog’, I was passively watching like this is wild. He paused what he was doing and went to the shop, I took over and just started messing around with it and destroyed the masterpiece he had created. I kind fell in love with it that day really.

What’s next for Sonnee, we hear there is new music in the new year?..

2023 is definitely going to be the busiest year for me yet. Loads of new tunes from the get-go, remixes, improving my live show & DJing. I honestly can’t wait.
…and maybe I should do a Crazy Frog Sonnee as a shoutout or something!

Hailing from New Bedford, Massachusetts ‘A Wilhelm Scream’ have sent the benchmark for Melodic Hardcore for almost two decades. The band are no strangers to Australian audiences having built up a devoted following as a world-class live band that can lift a room and take a show to the outer reaches of what’s possible. Their hyper fast, technically staggering output blurs lines and crosses boundaries, consistently turning heads of even the most jaded punk, metal, and rock fans.

Having recently released their fifth full-length album ‘Lose Your Delusion’, their first new record in 9 years, we are excited to announced ‘A Wilhelm Scream’ will return to Australia for the first time since 2016. A Wilhelm Scream possess a die-hard following in Australia, as of 2022 Sydney holds the number one spot for streaming the band while Australia is amongst the top three countries worldwide.

A Wilhelm Scream ‘Lose Your Delusion’.

A body of work that culls from various styles weaved together into what the band appropriately calls “A Wilhelm Sampler,” Lose Your Delusion, A Wilhelm Scream’s first full-length offering in nine years, finds the accomplished rock quintet at its most daring, experimental and cohesive.

After all these years, A Wilhelm Scream have lived their lives and did whatever they needed to do to get to the point where they could assemble and write the songs that absolutely needed to be written. Each song on Lose Your Delusion is a product of never cutting corners at any point, be it with writing, recording, practice, or performance. Providing commentary on the past few years and the toll it’s taken in regards to our collective stress, anxiety, frustration and panic, the album serves as a pillar in the band’s rich and evolving legacy.

“This is our most unapologetically earnest album to date,” says Trevor Reilly (Guitar, Vocals),. “It’s our fifth full-length record and it feels like our first in that we feel we have so much more to say and energy to put out into the world.”
