JACK BOTTS RETURNS WITH SOARING SINGLE ’18TH FLOOR’ + RELEASE SHOWS ANNOUNCED

by the partae November 6, 2020
written by the partae

Rising Australian singer-songwriter Jack Botts has returned with his most infectious single to date with the release of ‘18th Floor‘.

With his flair for flowing lyricism and memorable melodies on display more than ever, the single finds Botts digesting the highs and hurdles of a long distance relationship at the best of times, let alone during COVID.

Written and recorded while visiting his partner in Vancouver earlier this year, ’18th Floor’ is marked by vivid imagery of the extended time they had together as travel restrictions began to be enforced. With the inevitable flight home looming, the track emerged as a reminder that no matter how much time or distance might be between us and our loved ones, we’ll be OK.

“Trying to shine some light on a sticky situation, ‘18th Floor’ focuses on the exciting ‘things to come’ once reunited from being distant. Connecting again is definite. When, is uncertain,” Botts adds.

“‘18th Floor’ brings a little bit of hope to anyone doing it tough through distance with the ones you love. It reminisces on the good times that have been had, and the even better times to come.”

From beginnings busking in Byron, to countless sold out headline shows and support slots alongside the likes of Tash Sultana, John Floreani and The Pierce Brothers, Jack Botts has arguably become one of the Australia’s fastest rising songwriters under the radar. Built on an authentic and no-frills approach to life and music, the twenty two year-old has swiftly built a fanbase spanning over 150K Monthly Spotify listeners and 8 Million catalogue streams in just a few short years.

Jack Botts will celebrate the release of ’18th Floor’ with new dates throughout November, kicking off in Byron Bay tonight. More details and tickets below.

’18th Floor’ is independently released by Jack Botts and distributed via UNIFIED Music Group.

TOTTY REVEAL HOTLY AWAITED SOPHOMORE EP ‘GARDEN’ TODAY ALONGSIDE NEW SINGLE ‘CHANGE’

by the partae November 6, 2020
written by the partae

“…this follow up EP is TOTTY in full bloom. The Wollongong grunge trio are a life raft for those who prefer their contemplation of restlessness and detachment to be loud and under-polished.” – Rolling Stone Australia

Boisterous Wollongong trio TOTTY today reveal their hotly awaited sophomore EP ‘Garden’ alongside uninhibited new single and video ‘Change’, out through Ratbag Records/BMG.

A more mature omnibus than their previously lauded debut ‘Cut The Poppies’, ‘Garden’ reflects the growth the band have made together and individually. Singer Kelly reinstates the notion saying “A lot has changed since we wrote our EP but we are proud of where the songs came from, and where we are now. Learning to embrace all the different parts of growing and changing.” Dealing with themes of monotony and transformation the EP only resonates further in this year of uncertainty.

Produced by Kelly’s brother Brett Jansch (Dune Rats) and engineered by Jack Nigro at the beloved Grove Studios, the group succeeded in harnessing the band’s unmistakable live energy and grunge heavy riffs, a sentiment reinforced by the Rolling Stone review.

Sometimes it’s just better to be yourself and that’s exactly what TOTTY have embodied in ‘Change’ which arrives alongside previously released tracks ‘Berrarra’, ‘Fairies’, ‘Same Bed’ and fan favourite ‘Lucky’. The song’s meaning is what it says in the title with the band commenting “There will always be times you feel the need to change, it can be hard to know whether you’re the person you want to be or whether you’re trying to fit someone else’s ideas. We hope this song shows that being yourself is the best person you can be.”

The first track lifted from the EP ‘Lucky’ immediately resonated with radio. It was swiftly added to rotation at triple j and sat in their Top 50 Most Played for a month, ultimately reaching #13. They then completed their own headline tour full of sold out dates, and fronted the camera for an Aus Music Month shoot with General Pants.

Never ones to shy away from the tour van, TOTTY spent the start of 2020 on a national tour with Dune Rats, Ruby Fields and Dear Seattle and have played alongside names like SKEGGS, Hockey Dad and Slowly Slowly as well as graced the festival stages of Falls Festival, Yours & Owls, Fairgrounds, Farmer and the Owl and Grow Your Own more than proving their on stage prowess.

Where are you currently based?  I’m recently moved to Enmore NSW  How did you first start playing music?  I played piano from about 6 but never fully fell in love with it until I first picked up the guitar. I  started hiding in the music rooms at school during lunch & the music teacher would do group guitar  lessons. I eventually got more interested in classical guitar & played in a bunch of school bands. I  then went on to do a bachelor in guitar. I’ve been writing songs since I picked up the guitar.  What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?  I’ve been living in Bowral for a chunk of this year since we got evicted. I used the time to work on  my skills as a producer. Before covid struck everyones plans out the window like many people I’d  planned to spend most of the year traveling to work with new collaborators overseas. I’ve done a  few zoom writing sessions with some people I’d planned on meeting. I’ve been working on finishing   my EP & always working on writing more songs. The start of the year had a lot of ups & downs with  feeling fairly isolated in Bowral but I’m making up for my lack of socialising now that i’m back in  Sydney.  Your new single The Eviction Song, is out now, what influenced the sound and song writing?  I’ve always had a broad taste in music & find it hard to narrow down my influences. Some of my  favourite artists are Wolf Alice, The Japanese House & Rex Orange County. I’ve also made a  playlist of artists that i’ve been listening to this year> https://open.spotify.com/playlist/ 1AtMA91E9cX4GtyA6rVmoZ?si=-NPsDB3bTr2TzDHMx96pTw  How did you go about writing The Eviction Song?  I do a lot of writing with one of my close friends Oscar Sharah. We wrote The Eviction Song in the  studio in Coogee where we wrote a lot of the EP. We started out with the opening riff & it was  originally going to be a vocal melody & had completely different lyrics. We then went back to  writing with just an acoustic guitar until we had come up with the main melodies & lyrics. I always  prefer stripping back the session to just guitar to make sure I like the song as an acoustic before  we dive into the production elements.  Where and when did you record and who with?  I’m pretty sure started writing the song late December last year after I’d received the first eviction  notice. We recorded most of the track in Coogee in the same session that we wrote it.  What programs/instruments did you use?  The main guitar is recorded on a nylon guitar through an iPhone. The opening riff was recorded on  Juno. A lot of the soundscape elements are fuzzy guitarmonies. I can never help myself with  chucking harmony stacks on the guitars & BV arrangements. Oscar plays live drums on majority of  the EP. We are going to film us pulling apart the stems & chatting about the production in more  detail in a couple weeks so keep an eye out. How did the concept for the music video come about?  I wanted to include my old housemates and my friends who’d experienced our parties before the  eviction so I just got some old ass video cameras & started taking them out everywhere. I’ve got a  shit tonne of left over footage that will probably come out sometime soon also (but some of it will  never see the light of day lol). I knew I wanted to shoot one of the scenes in my bedroom because  we just moved into a new place & I was excited that I could fit a couch in my room. Lewis Clark  (director) & I went to a party store the day before & got excited by all the balloons & streamers so  that’s how the backdrop came about. Lewis & I brainstormed over coffee to come with the  aesthetic and locations that we thought would best suit the song.  Where and when did you film and who did you work with?  A lot of the filming was unplanned so I think that’s how we captured so many heartfelt moments  with my friends & housemates. Maybe I just think the dadcam footage of my friends is adorable  because I know them but I’m going to treasure the shots in this video & it will remind me of this   stage of my life forever. Most of the footage in shot walking around Enmore & in my bedroom. The  video was directed by a close friend Lewis Clark (Mel Blue) & we had another close friend Jimmy  Heathwood (Bronte Public Housing) assisting on handy cam & everything else that he could assist  with on the day. I think it made it a lot easier to show my real personality with only two friends  behind the camera having a laugh.  What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of the music video?  This was definitely the least challenging video I’ve shot to date. Lewis had a super clear plan for  the day so the whole shoot was pretty chill. We had a few drinks when Georgia arrived to ‘sleep’ on  the couch & then went out to trivia afterwards to look through the footage. We came so far last that  they forgot to call our name in the rankings & gave us free sympathy beer.  Who are you listening to at the moment?  I’ve been delving into Dominic Fike’s new album. I can’t stop listening to Caroline Polachek. I’m  always going back to the old Gorillaz albums & love some 90s grunge.  What do you like to do away from music?  I love a long walk & eating a whole cabbage to try and heal my body after the house parties. I don’t  do a lot away from music but it doesn’t sound super musical when I try to practise trumpet & drums  which are my newest hobbies.  You have some upcoming shows, how do you prepare for live shows and what can we expect?  I’ve had a couple prep sessions to organise stems with my guitarist & MD Ryan. After that I brought  in my band & backing vocalists for a rehearsal & hope the songs all come back to them. It’s been a  while since we’ve done a full band show & we’ve never done the band with live backing vocals but  I think it’s sounding pretty sick.  We’ll be playing duo at The Hard Rock Cafe on the 12th of Nov & full band at Kelly’s on the 26th of  Nov.  What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?  I’ll be working on some vids for the rest of the EP & doing the final touches on mixing & getting it  mastered. I’m also working on the next 2 EPs after that & producing/ writing for some other artists. Favourite food and place to hang out?  I recently 3rd wheeled a date at Emma’s Snack Bar with my pal’s Pat & Leah. The food was next  level & the company was also OK. I do love to hang out at Vic on the Park & haven’t joked about  how it feels like I live there.   https://www.instagram.com/lolascottmusic/   https://www.facebook.com/lolascottmusic   https://www.lolascott.com.au/

Across 29 Industry Voted and People’s Choice Award categories, the event saw some of the State’s best songwriters, performers and industry personnel walk away with trophies including multiple award winners Motez and Wing Defence, as well as other local legends like Ollie English, Naomi Keyte, Towns and Siberian Tiger. In a first for the SAM Awards noted producer/songwriter Motez and Pop punk duo Wing Defence tied for Best Release. Both artists took home three awards each in total with Motez also taking Best Video and People’s Choice Electronic Artist. Wing Defence added Best Group and People’s Choice Punk Artist to their accolades. Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni said congratulations to all the finalists and winners of the 2020 South Australian Music Awards on their achievements and success. “The SAM Awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate South Australia’s talented performers, songwriters and our local music industry which makes an enormous contribution to our economy and wellbeing,” Minister Pisoni said. This year’s SAM Awards, hosted by Three D Radio’s Isaac Selby, was an outdoor affair, taking over the University of Adelaide’s historic Cloisters and Unibar Lawns, which hosted incredible performances from 2020 SAM Award nominees J-MILLA, Lonelyspeck, Chelsea Manor and SEABASS. As one of the first major scale awards ceremonies of its kind to be able to be rolled out at its full capacity, in its full format, anywhere around the country this year, the organisers of the 2020 SAM Awards have noted the all-in effort made by production crews and staff who allowed the event to go off with a bang. “It was so wonderful to be able to gather for the SAM Awards.  It was a beautiful night and the perfect way to celebrate the depth and breadth of talent here in SA, especially after such a tough time for the industry.  Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees and to the team of great people that worked hard to make this event possible.” Kim Roberts, Music SA General Manager 2020 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN MUSIC AWARDS - WINNERS ADELAIDE UNESCO CITY OF MUSIC AWARD FOR BEST INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION FARHAN SHAH AND UDAN KHATOLA MUSIC SA COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD  CRAIG ARMSTRONG INDUSTRY VOTED AWARDS BEST STUDIO - Presented by Adelaide Music Collective GHOSTNOTE RECORDING STUDIOS BEST STUDIO ENGINEER / PRODUCER - Presented by SAE institute Adelaide MARIO SPATE BEST LIVE TECHNICIAN - Presented by Novatech LUKE HANCOCK BEST MAJOR FESTIVAL / EVENT - Presented by Pirate Life ST. It has been an epic night of music and celebration of South Australia’s music community and industry, as the 2020 South Australian Music (SAM) Awards took place on the grounds of UniBar Adelaide’s College Green.

Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees and to the team of great people that worked hard to make this event possible.” Kim Roberts, Music SA General Manager

INDIE-POP DARLING LOLA SCOTT REVEALS LUSH NEW SINGLE: “THE EVICTION SONG”

by the partae November 2, 2020
written by the partae

With a number of unique and addictive indie-pop singles to her name, Lola Scott is proving herself as a creative force in the Australian music scene. The classically trained guitarist is a self-proclaimed band-geek gone rogue, who has transitioned from touring internationally as a session musician, to relentlessly unleashing her solo project on the world.

New single “The Eviction Song” is a perfect distillation of everything there is to love about Lola Scott. Her cheeky, sarcastic lyrics unfurl a story of misty nostalgia, combining effortlessly warm and luscious alt-pop vocals with experimental, synth-driven production. The track is our first taste of Scott’s foray into new territory, which has seen her place a stronger focus on having fun with music and finding her true voice.

LISTEN TO “THE EVICTION SONG” HERE

“Earlier this year, my housemates and I were evicted from our house. We’re not sure what for, but can only assume the many house parties (leading to many noise complaints) didn’t help,” said Lola Scott. “When I wrote this song it was my 6th move in the last 4 years; and this house was by far one of most chaotic share-houses I’ve ever lived in. The song developed from the idea that when you live with a bunch of wild cards, and have the type of landlord who hoards things under the floorboards, you can never please everyone.

Despite this, the good times always outweighed the petty arguments. I found some of my most treasured friendships & made life-long memories. The more emotional breakdowns we faced together as housemates, the closer we got.. And luckily the eviction did not kill our friendships, and a couple of us have found a new place to continue the benders that probably got us kicked out in the first place.”

Beginning to play guitar and write songs at the age of eight, Lola Scott was spending lunchtimes in the music rooms for the majority of her school life. This dedicated honing of her musical craft over the years eventually led to her attaining a Bachelor’s degree in guitar, and Scott subsequently began her career as a session musician playing in friends’ bands throughout University, even landing a European tour and various local tours.

Since the launch of her solo project in 2018, Scott has delivered highly-praised singles with mind-blowing consistency, releasing three hook-laced singles in 2019 including “Crowded Conscience”, which saw spot plays on triple j, and “Cyclone Weather”, which was added to full rotation on tastemaker station FBi Radio in Sydney. Lola launched into 2020 stronger than ever, with triple j-favourite “Take Me Back”, which received praise from Purple Sneakers, LeFutureWave, CloutCloutClout, Music Feeds, Indietronica and more.

Evoking comparisons to alt-pop trailblazers Maggie Rogers, Wolf Alice and Emma Louise (Rex Orange County, King Princess), and with more music to come in 2020, Lola Scott has cemented a truly original sound and a formidable reputation in the Sydney music scene.

“The Eviction Song” is available on all platforms now.

Tour Dates:

Thursday 12th November  – Great Southern Nights  @ Hard Rock Cafe Sydney Monday 26th November 26th – Great Southern Nights @ Kelly’s Newtown

Praise for Lola Scott

“Lola Scott has just three singles to her name, but the world she’s building is formidable. Pulling a luscious pop sound and matching each tune with a resoundingly cinematic music video, it’s clear this artist isn’t fond of anything but perfection.” – Happy Mag

“Occasionally, an artist presents themselves as a completely realised project just a handful of songs into their career, and Lola Scott is one of those artists.” – PileRats

“Rising star Lola Scott is one act you need to have on your radar… (Take Me Back) is unashamed pop, and its power is in Lola‘s no-holds-barred approach, leaving absolutely everything on the floor with a stunning vocal performance to complement her intimate songwriting.” – Purple Sneakers

“Need to give this one its moment – (cyclone weather) is a gorgeous one from Lola! It veers towards breaking point and you’ll be on the hook the whole time.”
– Dave Ruby Howe (triple j)

DONNY BENÉT Announces Live Experience A virtual live performance of his new record Mr Experience Saturday 21 November Tickets on sale now

by the partae November 1, 2020
written by the partae

2020:

Mr Experience is released.

Global pandemic occurs – Live music shows and touring stops.

How do we bring the live experience of Mr Experience to a worldwide audience?

Today, Australia’s self-proclaimed “adult entertainer” Donny Benét announces Live Experience – a virtual live performance of his new record Mr Experience, taking place on Saturday 21 November in the comfort of your own home, wherever you are around the globe. To prevent you from being restricted by timezones, you will be able to watch the stream on this date at your convenience, however, Benét suggests tuning in at 8PM local time for optimal viewing.

Accompanied by his Show Band, Donny Benét has enlisted director Alex Smith and his collection of vintage video cameras and editing equipment, alongside a talented production crew, to capture the adventurous and exciting experience of a Donny Benét live show.

Tickets are on sale now via Eventbrite at a price of your choosing (pay as you can).

After humble lo-fi beginnings in the Australian art-pop underground, Donny Benét has expanded his cult-like following across the globe with a resonant array of danceable repertoire dealing with love and affection. Mr Experience marks a new chapter informed by a wealth of musical and personal development.

Featuring the singles ‘Mr Experience’, ‘Girl Of My Dreams’, ‘Second Dinner’ & ‘Moving Up’, Donny Benét envisions Mr Experience as a soundtrack to a dinner party set in the late 1980s. Since its release, it has been met with worldwide acclaim, including glowing reviews, features with Billboard, NME and Monocle, and has recently received nominations for ‘Best Adult Contemporary Album’ & ‘Best Cover Art’ at the 2020 ARIA Awards taking place in November.

A message from Donny Benét on Live Experience
In February I was fortunate enough perform in US/Canada on one of my most successful tours. It was so great to finally meet and connect with my US/Canadian audiences and I was very much looking forward to returning later in the year to tour Mr Experience. In March 2020 we had just begun rehearsing the band to prepare for the Mr Experience European tour in May and was looking forward to returning to Europe again to perform the new songs. Lockdown soon followed and we had to press pause after only one rehearsal together.
Like everything this year plans were made, changed, changed again and postponed.I wanted to stay connected to my audience throughout the early weeks of lockdown and decided to host The D Zone online every week until the new album was released. I had put so much love into writing Mr Experience and wanted to present it in the highest quality setting for audiences rather than a series of streamed shows.

I always had the idea of filming a live performance for posterity and generally being something on my wish list. As a huge music nerd I’ve spent endless hours trawling the internet watching live performances of my favourite artists and I always loved the idea that one day there would be a high-end production of a Donny Benét performance filmed and viewed online for years to come!

With the prospect of not being able to leave Australia for a long time this seemed like the perfect opportunity to indulge in this concept and create a piece of art with longevity. I approached the director Alex Smith to help bring this concept into reality. I always enjoy working with Alex – we both seem to operate within an extremely fine line of subtleties and niche references. Alex utilised his collection of vintage video cameras and editing equipment, alongside a talented production crew, to capture the adventurous and exciting experience of a Donny Benét live show.

My fantastic band lived up to all expectations with their warmth and musicality and for this special occasion we were able to invite two backing singers.

I’m ecstatic with how it turned out and it’s been quite satisfying to accomplish this project in an extremely dire time for live music. I hope you enjoy watching this concert!

–  Donny Benét

“There’s a warmth to Donny Benét’s fifth album that rages with the way things are right now. Alternative rap duo Craterface today share their sophomore release, the confessional mixtape BURN AFTER LISTENING. Listen HERE.

Rarely do titles come more bodacious or attention-grabbing than that of Craterface’s second mixtape. Its three words embody the all-caps catharsis of the duo’s deeply personal second full-length. BURN AFTER LISTENING is an instruction, a promise, a statement of intent that says here in your hands, you hold a piece of art so potent, so all-consuming, so loaded with confession and packed with every fibre of the artists’ souls that it becomes impossible to wash off. The only appropriate response is to sit, reflect and, finally, burn after listening.

Craterface wouldn’t have it any other way. The longtime creative partnership of rapper baby bruh and producer/vocalist Taki Local simply don’t do things in half-measures, pouring the entirety of themselves into their music, allowing listeners to piece through their brand of impassioned alt-hip hop and take what they will. “It’s so easy for us”, Taki Local says of the creative connection that exists between them; “I can’t imagine doing it with anyone else”, baby bruh concludes. The fervent devotion they inspire is second only to the group’s own commitment to leave-everything-out-there sincerity, egoless creative expression and authenticity.

Together they reflect, “This tape is the culmination of an emotional year, but at its core is about the power of spirituality and the effect that has on people who consider themselves just cogs in the wheel. The fact the creation of this tape took us both on a genuine, authentic spiritual path is more valuable than anything else, and we will never forget the strength it holds in that regard. Listen to this tape at whatever volume you please, and do so in the sun.”

BURN AFTER LISTENING is in some ways, a quintessential sophomore release: challenging and yet more rewarding than its predecessor, more spiritually fulfilling for its creators. Where Craterface’s debut mixtape DON’T BE CONFUSED was a smorgasbord of pop-adjacedent hip hop, its follow-up is a more concentrated effort at honing in a particular aesthetic and style. This time gravitating towards lo-fi, introspective New York rap, gritty mid-2000s hip hop and the anarchy of hyper-pop. At the same time, this release expands the duo’s creative universe outwards, drawing a cast of hand-selected artists into their strictly-in-house collaborative studios, including Art Rap Health Clinic tour-mates Shady Nasty on second single ‘ORIGAMI’ and Rhode Island producer-rapper Jair on opening track, ‘JAIR MALEEK DELGADO’.

Musing on themes of religion, spirituality, heartbreak, self-improvement and the cyclical nature of life, BURN AFTER LISTENING centres the confessional nature of baby bruh’s lyricism, while Taki Local’s production matches that fragmented energy with a boundarylessness mania reminiscent of SOPHIE or JPEGMAFIA. Already a singular act in the Australian music landscape, BURN AFTER LISTENING represents Craterface’s contribution to a new strand of hip hop in this country, one which is decidedly more insular, introspective and emotionally, creatively and stylistically innovative too.

New shows announced + what’s new at Dinosaur City Records

by the partae October 31, 2020
written by the partae
We’re excited to introduce ‘Leisure Coast Label Series’, a new initiative presented by Volumes in collaboration with ourselves and fellow South Coast record labels Farmer & the Owl, Spunk Records and Third Eye Stimuli.

We’ve just announced six new shows across Sydney (Oxford Art Factory) and Wollongong (La La La’s) from November 9 to November 11 as part of the series, featuring an all-star line-up of artists from our local roster, including Elmo Aoyama (who will be playing her very first Australian show), Nick Griffith, Greenwave Beth and Solo Career. They’ll be performing alongside the wonderful FLOWERTRUCK, Big White, Tees, The Oogars, e4444e and more.

For full line-ups and tickets, check our Facebook event page. Due to Covid restrictions, capacity at each show is limited – secure your tickets now and spread the word before they’re gone!

VIEW EVENTS
This year we’ve released new records from Nick Griffith, Elmo Aoyama, Gum Country and Cotillon, singles from Navy Gangs and NOCON, plus the Stay Inside: Songs from the Great Indoors compilation where we released a song (or two) per day throughout April – and there’s more to come! We’re excited to soon introduce stunning French artist Laure Briard to Australia, announce an exciting new local signing, plus share a hot new single from NOCON before the year comes to an end.

Check out our top five picks from this year below, or click here to hear the best of Dinosaur City Records 2020 so far.

1. NOCON ‘HOAX’
NOCON is the new Melbourne-based art-punk duo comprised of Jamie Timony (These New South Whales/MOSSY) and Jake O’Brien. A follow-up to skuzzy punk debut ‘AGAG’, ‘HOAX’ was recorded and produced remotely by Jamie and Jake during a winter in isolation. The track sticks to the parameters established with ‘AGAG’ (bendy guitars, driving bass), while leaning further into the band’s influences from trap, emo and cloud rap.

Learn more about NOCON via this interview which just went live on Deafen County, and follow them on Instagram to stay up-to-date with show announcements and new releases.

2. NAVY GANGS ‘SOMETIMES’
This August, New York-via-Nebraska rockers Navy Gangs dropped a sweet new single, ‘Sometimes’, which was written and recorded by Matt Tillwick during quarantine in Manhattan. Matt says of the new track, “While I am trying to be healthy, safe and sane while maintaining income, friendships and relationships, I’m feeling pretty stressed and drained by it all. ‘Sometimes’ is a reflection of these feelings.”
LISTEN TO ‘SOMETIMES’
3. ELMO AOYAMA ‘SPELLS’
Elmo Aoyama, best-known for her contributions to much-loved Sydney band Big White, has quickly made a name for herself with her new solo project and recently released EP ‘Spells’. An ambitious debut spanning dreamy synth ballads and industrial-pop anthems, singles ‘Spells’, ’21’ and ‘Summertime’ saw rotation adds on FBi Radio, Triple R and 3RTR, spins on KEXP, triple j and 2SER and praise from the likes of NME, Bandcamp, Deafen County, Weirdo Wasteland and Happy Magazine.

Check out ‘Spells’ now if you haven’t already, and don’t miss out on tickets to her debut Sydney show with FLOWERTRUCK and e4444e at Oxford Art Factory on Wednesday November 11.

LISTEN TO ‘SPELLS’
4. GUM COUNTRY ‘SOMEWHERE’
We discovered LA-via-Vancouver duo Gum Country when they played with Greenwave Beth at a bowling club in Eagle Rock, LA last March (feels like a lifetime ago now!). We released their debut album ‘Somewhere’ on bright pink vinyl and limited edition cassette in June and hope to tour the band here in Australia when Covid restrictions permit. ‘Somewhere’ received a stellar 7.2 review from Pitchfork, was Bandcamp’s Album of the Day, topped the KEXP charts and was warmly embraced by community radio here in Australia. The record saw praise from our favourite media outlets including Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, Northern Transmissions, The Line of Best Fit and Deafen County among others, and was added to Spotify’s mammoth ‘New Music Friday’, ‘Fresh Finds: Indie’ and ‘New Punk Tracks’ playlists. Go Gum Country!

There’s a high chance you’ve already heard tracks from ‘Somewhere’ on the radio, Spotify, Bandcamp or elsewhere. If not, check it out below!

Take a ticket to the world of The Lathums, a place of tall tales and wild rides mapped out by new, four-track EP: GHOSTS

The Lathums – Ghost EP
Feat. 1) I See Your Ghost 2) Corporation Street 3) All My Life 4) Foolish Parley
OUT NOW on Island Records
Pirates, cobblestones and ghosts swirl in unlikely harmony around the heads of indie heroes, The Lathums as they release their four-track, Ghosts EP, featuring acclaimed singles, I See Your Ghost and All My Life – OUT NOW on Island Records. A window opens once more into the mind of bookworm frontman, Alex Moore, with four-tracks that dive soul deep, swerve towards the surreal and pull wheelies of exuberant joy to leave deep tracks in the dirt of 2020 heading towards a bright 2021.

The EP concludes a hectic month for the band, following their return to live performance last week, streaming a special, one-off gig, Live From Blackpool Tower and performing I See Your Ghost for a national TV audience on Later… With Jools Holland.

Picking up lows to become highs, the story of July single, All My Life, the inspirational first song written by Moore as a sensitive and world-weary teen, echoes that of previously unreleased EP track, Corporation Street. Complete with Smiths-esque yodelling and a lilting, beachside ska-lite sound, the lyrics walk the happy/sad line walked by great writers who can point out the first ray of sunshine on the darkest of days. The Lathums’ wry, poetic positivity is a light that can’t be put out.

Moore says: “I was in a beautiful town in Lancashire, leaving a family celebration and I glanced to one side on the way home and, just at that moment, the sunlight hit the top of this incredibly steep, narrow, cobbled street and beamed down off it. It stayed with me. It happened on Corporation Street.”

In times of strife it’s good to talk and Foolish Parley, the EP’s closer, draws on archaic customs of the high-seas and the calling of a traditional truce for negotiations between warring factions to take place. Cast across burbling rhythms with shards of reverb-laced guitar, the warm, analogue accents of 60’s beat classics echo around rapid fire vocal lines that paint evocative pictures of familiar discord.

Looking ahead to a hopeful New Year, The Lathums – formed of Moore (vocals/guitars), Scott Concepcion (lead guitars), Johnny Cunliffe (bass) and Ryan Durrans (drums) – look into a 2021 filled with sold out, landmark shows including dates at Manchester’s O2 Ritz and London’s Electric Ballroom, plus celebratory festival appearances, including Sound City and Neighbourhood Weekender. All confirmed UK and Ireland dates for The Lathums are:

  • Thu 22 Apr          Hull, Social – SOLD OUT

The band has also confirmed a run of rescheduled support dates in 2021, travelling around the UK and Europe with Blossoms and are proud to be invited guests on Paul Weller’s rearranged tour.

Earlier this year, The Lathums announced their plans to cut just one, 7” copy of their cover of Northern Soul classic, The Snake. With no digital release or radio airplay planned, just one, winning ticket holder in an online raffle to support fan-led fund for the survival of Wigan Athletic will ever own the recording. To date, the fundraising effort has secured almost £4000.

The Lathums’ story began just two years ago with the band making swift graduation from Greater Manchester pubs to festival stages including Kendal Calling and Neighbourhood Weekender. The breathless pace at which their popularity has escalated is now being captured in upbeat recording sessions for their debut album at Parr Street Studios, Liverpool with producers, James Skelly and Chris Taylor.

Today, Sydney rapper Kwame releases his new EP “Please, Get Home Safe.” - a journey of self-discovery, acceptance and catharsis. The EP follows the young artist, from once starry-eyed, to now venturing out into the uncertain world facing trials and tribulations in the hope that true self-identity can be recognised. In celebration of releasing what is his third project, Kwame has been performing live shows at the Lansdowne Hotel in Sydney. Tonight’s two sets, supported by Phil Fresh, will be the final shows of the short run. “Please, Get Home Safe.” EP title takes inspiration from a saying often used by parents to their children when leaving home “Be careful, stay safe and let me know when you’re home” It was through this saying that Kwame gained the inspiration to speak on how he himself as an Artist can often see the world intimidating when wanting to break away from the unwritten social norms of acceptable behaviour as well as how Artists ‘should’ create. Through this carefully written and produced project, Kwame begins his journey of self-discovery on the first half of the project. The first track being ‘Nobody’, an artistic number planting Kwame’s stance as a force to be reckoned with bringing all that he had feared to the centre of the attention with E^ST’’s angelic touch declaring that in fact all our big dreams make all our fears smaller. The sample driven ‘Stop Knockin’ @ My Door!’ a constant shield steering clear of all the naysayers & negativity one can feel preceded by the fierce collaboration between Kwame & Arno Faraji on ‘Ain't So’ demanding the respect and credit that they are ever so due of. Kwame then swerved into the face of external forces that shook his core existence. Debilitating and at times oppressive, we are met with the song ‘Tommy's In Trouble’ (featuring CLYPSO & Phil Fresh) in which he confronts adversity. Kwame acknowledges his deep vulnerability as a human being through which is discovered in the song ‘Glory’. Kwame touches on the losses and downfalls he faced promoting growth within his mind which had made him more mature not only as a person, but also as an artist. Seeking to bring peaceful and positive energy to not only his own life, but to others around him. The finale in ‘We Can Be’ highlights the confidence in overcoming adversity. Kwame has now returned home safely, and acknowledges pivotal moments faced along the way. His experiences have made him more mature and he is now certain of his purpose, his calling. Kwame acknowledges self-identity is a journey that carries beyond deeper into a philosophical context both past present and future. He now stands in front of his audience with confidence, maturity and positive energy in the hope that he can provide a voice to others through this multi-dimensional, lateral art piece. Whilst he understands his purpose, he recognises the best years are yet to come - ‘we’ can be anything. You can be anything. Since releasing his debut single, ‘I Get It’ in 2016, the 22-year-old Ghanaian-Australian producer, writer, rapper and engineer has gone on to amass over 19 million times globally. KWAME Releases ‘Please, Get Home Safe’ EP Today | Listen Here – Playing Tonight At Landsdowne Hotel, Sydney

written by the partae

Today, Sydney rapper Kwame releases his new EP “Please, Get Home Safe.” – a journey of self-discovery, acceptance and catharsis.

“Please, Get Home Safe.” EP title takes inspiration from a saying often used by parents to their children when leaving home “Be careful, stay safe and let me know when you’re home”

It was through this saying that Kwame gained the inspiration to speak on how he himself as an Artist can often see the world intimidating when wanting to break away from the unwritten social norms of acceptable behaviour as well as how Artists ‘should’ create.

The sample driven ‘Stop Knockin’ @ My Door!’ a constant shield steering clear of all the naysayers & negativity one can feel preceded by the fierce collaboration between Kwame & Arno Faraji on ‘Ain’t So’ demanding the respect and credit that they are ever so due of.

Kwame then swerved into the face of external forces that shook his core existence. Debilitating and at times oppressive, we are met with the song ‘Tommy’s In Trouble’ (featuring CLYPSO & Phil Fresh) in which he confronts adversity.

Citizen Kay – Unveils Powerful Accompanying Video Clip For Single ‘Don’t Blink’

SUPPORT FOR ‘DON’T BLINK’

“You’ll want to have both eyes on the screen at all times when watching this video.”
–  Cool Accidents (AUS)

“With pummeling guitar, formidable bars and a hard-hitting, swaggering bass, ‘Don’t Blink’ is a total heater.”
–  Purple Sneakers (AUS)

Added to Apple Music playlist ‘New Music Daily’

Following on from the release of his critically praised single ‘Don’t Blink’, Canberra-based hip hop artist Citizen Kay has just revealed the accompanying video clip – directed and edited by long-time collaborator Nic Vevers.

Filmed at the top of a carpark in the heart of Canberra City, the clip sees a dynamic performance from Citizen Kay, mixed with the exquisite work of Canberra animator Trent Dwyer. Through the playful use of light and sped up camera techniques, Vevers highlights the contrast between the still, barren carpark and the frenetic rendition from Kay.

Citizen Kay talks about the inspiration and process behind the video clip:

“After working with Nic for so long, I’ve come to trust him completely and am hella confident of his work. We had this dope idea of a one-shot, slow panning, cinematic, minimalistic video which went right out the window. Instead, we ended up making this mostly spontaneous clip that you see which reflects the song so damn well! The animation represents subliminal internal thoughts which oppose a lot of the aggression throughout the track, and the visuals and a gritty style just came out so naturally when shooting.”

Citizen Kay’s albums ‘Demokracy’ and ‘With The People’ were both nominated for an ARIA award in the ‘Best Urban Album’ category; the former was also nominated for an AIR award for ‘Best Independent Hip-Hop Album Release’. A performance soon followed on triple j’s esteemed ‘Like A Version’ segment and was met with praise by fans and critics alike.

Previous releases have also been strongly supported by Spotify, Apple Music, Complex, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers, Cool Accidents, AUD’$, Acid Stag and NME, with video clips added to rotation on ABC’s Rage. He’s also had multiple tracks added to rotation on triple j and extensive play across community radio. His three albums, including his last ‘Belly Of The Beast‘, received top 10 placings on the US College Hip Hop charts and the single ‘Ego’ broke into the top 20 of the US NACC Singles chart. In the UK, the single picked up regional and community radio plays.

Citizen Kay has toured the country extensively, supporting hip hop luminaries Public Enemy, Run The Jewels, Ice Cube, Danny Brown, Wiz Khalifa, Earl Sweatshirt and Australian crowd favourites ILLY, Tkay Maizda and Seth Sentry. He’s also made appearances at Australian mainstay events Falls Festival and Groovin’ The Moo.

‘Don’t Blink’ is available worldwide now through Asphalt Records/MGM

Lastlings Release New Single ‘Out Of Touch’ & Announce Six Shows For Fans In QLD

by the partae October 29, 2020
written by the partae

With under a month left until the release of their anticipated debut album First Contact and following the announcement of a wave of shows in their home state of QLD, Australian-Japanese sibling duo Lastlings today share their newest single ‘Out Of Touch’.

The track is the final song to be revealed ahead of the release of the duo’s highly anticipated 12-track debut, landing on November 20. Lastlings have been perfecting the LP over the past year, and ‘Out of Touch’ is a testament to their masterful engineering of transportive lyricism and emotive pop soundscapes. A shimmering electro-pop jam, the song juxtaposes Amy’s delicate yet poignant vocals against Josh’s darker tech-driven basslines.

LISTEN: ‘Out Of Touch’ by Lastlings

“The majority of the lyrics for Out of Touch were written at our grandparents home in Japan. The song is about disconnecting from real life and spending time on yourself, especially at times where life becomes too much and you need to recharge. Self-care is so important, especially at times like this.

“The song is a bit of a full circle moment because the main guitar parts were written with Josh’s first guitar. The guitar melodies were inspired by ‘path of the wind’ by Joe Hisaishi from our favourite childhood animation ‘My Neighbour Totoro’. All of these things together make the song extremely nostalgic for us because it reminds us of when we were kids and simpler times.”

Last week, Lastlings announced shows for fans in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. First shows sold-out quickly with subsequent shows now also nearing capacity. The shows will see Lastlings take to the stage in full band mode, playing their new material to audiences for the first time yet.The band’s anticipated debut album First Contact (out on November 20) centralises around the theme of “firsts”. Each track harkens back to notable life milestones, from the first day of life, to the first spoken words, to the first experience of falling in love, through the last breath on Earth. The album is preceded by a trailer co-created by Lastlings’ and Sydney-based director Dylan Duclos, paying homage the duo’s Japanese heritage. Produced in Japan in their native language, the trailer weaves elements of Japanese landscapes and cultural touchpoints that take form throughout songs and visuals in First Contact. Check it out here.

The band’s previously released singles ‘No Time’, ‘Take My Hand’, ‘Last Breath’, ‘Deja Vu’, and ‘I’ve Got You’ have all received airplay from triple j and found a home on a myriad of Apple Music and Spotify playlists globally.

THE DREGGS are Paddy Macrae and Zane Harris, an indie-folk songwriting duo from The Sunshine Coast. Since forming in 2017 they have amassed over 3millon streams, garnered critical praise from Tone Deaf, NME Australia, Pilerats with spot play on triple j. They also recently played at Bigsound 2020. Today they release their dreamy new single, ‘Keepsake’ which showcases their elegant songwriting and harmonies. ‘Keepsake’ is a follow up to fan favourite ‘Call Me Home’.   Speaking about their new single THE DREGGS tell us, “Keepsake is a track touching on the beauty of vulnerability and the importance of allowing people into our lives, regardless of whether they bring us pain or joy. The act of wearing someone’s heart “like a keepsake” is playing on the idea of wearing a sentimental object, such as a pocket watch or a pendant from a loved one.”   THE DREGGS encompass a whole range of emotion with their music. They find themselves writing tracks with a whole range of dynamics. Alongside this, the boys are strong advocates for Mental Health Awareness, touching on elements of mental health in their songs. Growth is a common theme throughout their music, expressing how important it is to grow and change in positive ways.   Although the music industry came to a halt during the Covid-19 pandemic, THE DREGGS are still working harder than ever, landing themselves an opportunity to feature on several of Ziggy Alberts’ tracks, most notably Together (2020), as well as supporting Kim Churchill on his ‘Bright Nights’ Australian Tour 2020, playing Bigsound2020 and in celebration of Keepsake, The Keepsake Tour starts in early November.   THE DREGGS ‘Keepsake’ is out now through Ditto Music. Following the easing of restrictions announcement yesterday, Untitled Group has just revealed the return of their day parties with Willaris.K & more this March at the Coburg Velodrome. Untitled Group’s day parties have acquired a cult-like following over the years, known for their unique locations, world-class production/stage designs and lineups showcasing the best of local and international talent. This event will feature an all local lineup including:  Willaris.K Torren Foot Made in Paris Late Nite Tuff Guy Jordan Brando KLP Choomba Brux After a tough 2020 this will give domestic artists the opportunity to get back into performing in front of their home crowds and give Victorians a needed glimmer of hope in the live music realm to look forward to in 2021. Past Untitled Group day parties have included the likes of Claptone, Solomun, MK, Dom Dolla and Patrick Topping. See the iconic Coburg Velodrome be transformed into a haven of Australian dance music for what’s sure to be one for the books. Willaris.K Tastemaker and producer Willaris. K had his triple j supported break-out single “Alchemy” back in 2018 and has never looked back. His sophisticated techno has seen him earn fans in Pete Tong, sell-out shows in Australia and play at festivals including Coachella, Splendour in the Grass, Lollapalooza, Beyond the Valley, Wildlands, Forbidden Fruit and more. Torren Foot Perpetually ahead of the curve, house producer Torren Foot was raised on the working docks of Melbourne’s inner west, and is now a fixture of Aussie club culture as one of the countries most in demand touring dj’s - he recently gained international attention following the release of ‘More Life’ topping #1 Beatport overall, support from tastemakers Adam Beyer, Claptone, Mat.Joe, Wax Motif & Destructo to name a few and A-list radio support from triple j. Made in Paris Closing 2019 with her most anticipated single ‘Pursuit’, Made in Paris has dominated radio with full rotation and 100+ spins on Triple J, taking top 30 positions weekly on the Australian Shazam Chart and adds to Spotify editorial playlists globally. From her three USA tours to Australia’s most acclaimed warehouses alongside Stephan Bodzin on his 2019 Australian tour, Pitch Music Festival, Beyond The Valley and Splendour In The Grass, the Sydney artist depicts a true deep and dark production journey from studio to stage. Late Nite Tuff Guy Late Nite Tuff Guy is a new breed of disco vigilante, prowling the neon streets on a mission from God / David Mancuso to reclaim the clubs and fuck shit up. The scandalous alter-ego of genuine techno legend HMC (known to his momma as Cam Bianchetti), Late Nite Tuff Guy (LNTG) puts the acrimony in acronym, the oh in disco, the amp in camp and the dang in dangerous.  Jordan Brando Recognised by BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong & tastemakers globally, Jordan’s abilities as a DJ and a producer raise no questions to why he is “a rising star in Australian dance music.” Standout performances at revered festivals Beyond the Valley and Pitch Music & Arts, and being handpicked to share the stage with the likes of Patrick Topping to Jamie Jones, have all contributed to solidifying Brando’s name as one Australia's most promising dance music exports. KLP KLP, real name Kristy Lee Peters, is a talented force of the Australian music industry, with credentials that cement her reputation as a multi-faceted industry heavyweight. Between writing and recording her own music, and collaborating with local and international artists, KLP also found time to host the country’s biggest Dance Music radio program, triple j’s House Party every Saturday night for 5 years. Choomba: Right on cue for 2019 Choomba came out of the gate with a debut EP that hit  #4 on the overall Beatport Release Chart, #2 on the hyper competitive Tech-House Chart, came in at #36 on Australia’s overall Shazam Chart  and saw them up for the Triple J Unearthed feature artist spotlight. The follow up single Wantchu took that momentum even further being spot added to Triple J.

This event will feature an all local lineup including:

Willaris.K

Torren Foot

Made in Paris

Late Nite Tuff Guy

Jordan Brando

KLP

Choomba

Brux

After a tough 2020 this will give domestic artists the opportunity to get back into performing in front of their home crowds and give Victorians a needed glimmer of hope in the live music realm to look forward to in 2021.

Past Untitled Group day parties have included the likes of Claptone, Solomun, MK, Dom Dolla and Patrick Topping.

See the iconic Coburg Velodrome be transformed into a haven of Australian dance music for what’s sure to be one for the books.

Willaris.K

Tastemaker and producer Willaris.

Torren Foot

Perpetually ahead of the curve, house producer Torren Foot was raised on the working docks of Melbourne’s inner west, and is now a fixture of Aussie club culture as one of the countries most in demand touring dj’s – he recently gained international attention following the release of ‘More Life’ topping #1 Beatport overall, support from tastemakers Adam Beyer, Claptone, Mat.Joe, Wax Motif & Destructo to name a few and A-list radio support from triple j.

Made in Paris

Closing 2019 with her most anticipated single ‘Pursuit’, Made in Paris has dominated radio with full rotation and 100+ spins on Triple J, taking top 30 positions weekly on the Australian Shazam Chart and adds to Spotify editorial playlists globally.

Late Nite Tuff Guy

Late Nite Tuff Guy is a new breed of disco vigilante, prowling the neon streets on a mission from God / David Mancuso to reclaim the clubs and fuck shit up. The scandalous alter-ego of genuine techno legend HMC (known to his momma as Cam Bianchetti), Late Nite Tuff Guy (LNTG) puts the acrimony in acronym, the oh in disco, the amp in camp and the dang in dangerous.

Jordan Brando

Recognised by BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong & tastemakers globally, Jordan’s abilities as a DJ and a producer raise no questions to why he is “a rising star in Australian dance music.” Standout performances at revered festivals Beyond the Valley and Pitch Music & Arts, and being handpicked to share the stage with the likes of Patrick Topping to Jamie Jones, have all contributed to solidifying Brando’s name as one Australia’s most promising dance music exports.

KLP

KLP, real name Kristy Lee Peters, is a talented force of the Australian music industry, with credentials that cement her reputation as a multi-faceted industry heavyweight. Between writing and recording her own music, and collaborating with local and international artists, KLP also found time to host the country’s biggest Dance Music radio program, triple j’s House Party every Saturday night for 5 years.

Choomba:

Right on cue for 2019 Choomba came out of the gate with a debut EP that hit  #4 on the overall Beatport Release Chart, #2 on the hyper competitive Tech-House Chart, came in at #36 on Australia’s overall Shazam Chart  and saw them up for the Triple J Unearthed feature artist spotlight. The follow up single Wantchu took that momentum even further being spot added to Triple J.

Brux

Revel in the realm of BRUX – a turbulent force of brooding rhythms and distorted desires of the human psyche. Equally intimidating as alluring, BRUX confronts notions of fate, materialism and the pursuit of pleasure.
