There’s a warm alternative country rock sound running through Super Hotel. How did you arrive at that sound?
Likely by taking those classic life roads of love and loss and letdowns, lol. So you get the country-style storytelling, but also a rejection of things sounding too ‘nice’ or ‘resolved’, hence the alternative rockin’.
Brisbane has a strong music community. How much has being part of that scene shaped the band?
It literally and figuratively has shaped the Hotel, in that we started writing songs with a small core group who were in previous bands together, then added members who we knew of from other projects within the Brizzo big band fam and who thereby suited/added to the style.
When a new Super Hotel song starts coming together, what usually sets it off?
One could say it starts with a riff, either musically or conversationally 😉
Do your songs change much once you start playing them in front of people?
Sometimes! We’re currently working on a song to record, and it’s been fun trying out different ways of playing it live and seeing how people react to those. #organic?
You’re playing 4ZZZ for Sounds Like Community Radio during BIGSOUND. What are you looking forward to about the day?
Playing in that beloved carpark and getting to meet some fellow community radio lovers! Stoked to see the wonderful Milly Strange play too <3
What’s something you’ve heard recently that’s made you want to get back into the studio?
Gary, our guitarist, has been absolutely rinsing Swapmeet’s new album, Mount Zero, and it’s got us all giddy to lush up the next Hotel songs with allll the bits.
If someone is discovering Super Hotel for the first time through this show, which song should they hear?
Go listen to our first single, Shaq Attack. We told you to watch out!
