Photo credit: Jess Brohier PRAISE FOR JUNE JONES “With Leafcutter she bends synth-pop convention in a fearlessly honest set that explores her experiences as a “deeply emotional” trans woman." - UNCUT "Unnerving and beautiful, it’s a strikingly rendered portrait of disaffection." - THE FADER "Fans of John Grant, Kate Bush and Björk will find a lot to love here — Leafcutter is by very definition art pop, but it never ventures out of the realm of accessibility." - Beat “Leafcutter is a reminder that there is strength in vulnerability and something truly powerful about a well-written song.” - STACK “June Jones' voice is one that envelops you and never lets you go. The emotion she lacquers every word with becomes your emotion; her world becomes your own.” - MTV A prolific artist and singular voice in the world of Australian music, June Jones releases her sophomore album Leafcutter today on Emotion Punk Records in collaboration with Remote Control Records. Despite this being Jones’ first self-produced record, Leafcutter feels in many ways like a logical sequel to her previous releases, which include two albums with Two Steps on the Water, the self-proclaimed “emotion punk” band she fronted from 2014 to 2018. Like her past albums, Leafcutter is a collection of songs exploring different aspects of her experience as “a deeply emotional trans woman, a lesbian with ADHD.” Her signature vocals – dynamic in their ability to move between syrupy cool and impassioned exclamation – are present as ever at the forefront of this record. To celebrate Leafcutter's release, Jones has announced album launches in Sydney & Castlemaine, plus an additional Melbourne show, on top of her two sold-out shows at Howler for the Brunswick Music Festival. Details below.   Lyrically, the songs have a confessional intimacy that Jones has become known for. On her latest single, 'Home', she uses the five senses to describe her relationship to her body, being loved, and learning to love herself. The verses are both poetic and analytic – “The sound of my voice in your ear / I wonder who it is you hear / And if you can discern the beating of my wings / The nutrients inside a tear” – culminating in a resplendent chorus in which she sings “But this is now / And this is home / And home is all I ever wanted” in a voice that is unmistakably hers.   Throughout 'Remember', the second track on the album, Jones uses her voice as an instrument, singing deep dyadic chords reminiscent of a Gregorian chant, panned between left and right ears. This millennium-old vocal style is counterbalanced with synths that reference both Madchester rave and hair metal, as well as viola, saxophone, intricate drum patterns, and a casually cool bass line. All these elements work together to create a sound that is at once familiar and unlike anything else that has come before. It is this atemporal collaging of old and new styles that defines Jones’s self-taught approach to production on Leafcutter. As a producer, Jones reminds us that everything new is a rearranging and reimagining of traditions.   “I made the whole album on a tiny refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad that I bought off a guy at a McDonalds. 18 months and over 1000 hours of work later, the album is finally finished. As someone diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, I have been almost entirely self-taught as a musician, whether it’s singing, writing songs, learning an instrument, or producing my own music, I just haven’t been able to sit still long enough to get through a lesson. But there have definitely been moments along the way where I have learned a lot from people, like sitting in the studio with Geoffrey O’Connor throughout the process of making Diana, or getting feedback on mixes from my dear friend and superproducer Geryon. Sometimes I wish I could approach learning in a more structured and systematic way, but I get overwhelmed by the infinite possibilities of music, so I’ve always felt more comfortable intuiting my way through things.”   Leafcutter manages to feel both intuitive and unpredictable in a way that calls to mind a classic Björk or Kate Bush album, finding a tentative home in the nebulous definition of art-pop. From above it is a pop record, but from within it resembles a labyrinth overflowing with intricate details that reveal themselves with each listen. Jones’s intuition informs both the album’s pop sensibility and experimentation. One thing that she delivers yet again is a record bursting with songs that get stuck in your head. Leafcutter, insectoid in name, is home to no shortage of earworms.   “One of my favourite albums of all time is Carly Rae Jepsen’s Emotion. For me, it’s a perfect pop album, with bangers from start to finish. In a funny way, I aspire to achieve that kind of consistency with every album I make. I feel like I am probably more prone to boredom than most, and it’s a state that I find almost painful. If there’s one thing I want to avoid as an artist, it’s being boring.” And boring this album is not. Every song feels like its own little world which Jones invites us into, where we are asked to sit and feel with her for a few minutes before moving next door to another one, with similarities and differences, made up of things both familiar and strange. On Leafcutter, Jones pulls off the unlikely feat of finding harmony in that which, according to our own intuitions, should be dissonant. In the second last line of the opening track, 'Jenny (Breathe)', she sings “There are as many worlds as minds here to perceive them”, and so too is the case with the quantum art pop of Leafcutter. MODERN DAY ENTERTAINMENT, UNIFIED MUSIC GROUP & RED HILL ENTERTAINMENT TEAM UP TO BRING LIVE MUSIC TO THE NBL

by the partae February 20, 2021
written by the partae

Modern Day Entertainment, UNIFIED Music Group and Red Hill Entertainment are thrilled to announce they have teamed up to bring Australian music onto the courts for the inaugural NBL Cup.

The NBL Cup is a first of its kind competition (played within the regular NBL season) where all nine teams will descend on Melbourne for the event, which begins on Saturday February 20 and will feature 36 games (18 double-headers) across John Cain Arena and the State Basketball Centre over a four-week basketball bonanza.

“It will provide great value for all sports fans, particularly families, who can watch the biggest stars of the league in double headers for the price of one game. We encourage everyone who hasn’t been to an NBL game before to come along and experience a fantastic night of entertainment,” the NBL’s owner and executive chairman, Larry Kestelman, said.

The NBL is in a unique position to align itself with the Australian music industry (in a way no other sporting code has done) by providing an incredible platform to shine the spotlight on and champion the next generation of homegrown talent.

With the pandemic annihilating the live music industry like no other (and shows being virtually non existent in Victoria for the past 12 months), herein lies the perfect opportunity to give music fans that haven’t been to a concert/festival in a long time to see a live performance by an incredible up and coming Australian artist, whilst at the same time giving artists that haven’t been on stage for just as long, an exciting platform to express their craft.

On the partnership, Co-Founder of Modern Day Entertainment Julian Palei said, “With the NBL perfectly placed as Australia’s premiere destination for sports fans and families, it felt like a natural fit for live music to be included as part of their program. We’re extremely excited at Modern Day Entertainment to join forces with Jaddan and UNIFIED Music Group in bringing emerging Aussie talent to the courts, and building on the amazing work the NBL is doing by creating an all round entertainment experience for patrons.”

Artists to perform during the NBL Cup:
Saturday 20 February – New wave multi-instrumental loop artist Steve Cousins
Sunday 21 February – 18 y/o “glock-pop” songstress Matilda Pearl
Saturday 27 February – Hip hop and RnB artist Jordan Astra
Saturday 6 March – Fast rising Melbourne based MC Jordan Dennis
Sunday 7 March – Jamaican-Australian singer, rapper, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jaycee
Wednesday 10 March – Energetic hip hop artist on the rise YNG Martyr
Saturday 13 March – Pop/rap artist and producer Sophiya

CEO and Founder of UNIFIED Music group Jaddan Comerford adds, “Bringing music to the NBL has been a dream for years and to now be doing it with Julian and our friends at Modern Day Entertainment we are over the moon. Music and basketball has always been closely linked and we are thrilled to be able to put up and coming Australian music in front of basketball fans. This is just the beginning and we are grateful to the NBL for the opportunity they are giving to the Australian music industry.”

Co-Founder of Modern Day Entertainment Nic GidleyKing adds: “It’s an absolute pleasure to be pursuing this venture with a company like UNIFIED Music Group, who I very much admire and respect. Being in the position to work with the NBL and deliver a unique experience for Australian musicians & sports fans is an opportunity I’m proud of and grateful for.”

Director of Red Hill Entertainment Aidan McLaren adds: “To be able to give new and emerging artists a platform like the NBL Cup to reach and entertain new fans is something really special and important. The atmosphere of these events is going to be amazing and for many of the acts involved it will be their first ever time performing in a stadium. We couldn’t be more excited to be partnering with the NBL, Modern Day Entertainment and Unified Music Group on these events and are really excited to see where this partnership and the entertainment element of NBL Cup will grow in the future.”

UNIFIED Music Group is a globally renowned multi-service music company providing a range of services including artist management, recorded music, publishing, live events and merchandise to a diverse roster of local and international artists.

Modern Day Entertainment is the management company and independent record label behind Jamaican-Australian rising star Jaycee, and HipHopCharts.com.au (Australia’s first and only dedicated hip hop chart).

BOYSCLUB win triple j unearthed collab comp to write song with Nick Littlemore

WRITING SONG WITH NICK LITTLEMORE OF PNAU/EMPIRE OF THE SUN
SINGLE ‘BEST FOR YOU’ DROPPED IN LATE JANUARY
“BEST FOR YOU” TOUR DATES HAPPENING NOW
Sydney’s BOYSCLUB have been announced as one of five winners of triple j unearthed’s Collab Comp, and will be writing a song alongside PNAU and Empire of the Sun songwriter/frontman Nick Littlemore.

On triple j unearthed’s website, Littlemore said of the prospect of working with BOYSCLUB: ‘I’m well keen to make some dirty rock n roll and I’m very interested to see how we can reinvent the sound of rock for 2021. ‘

The announcement was made this morning on triple j radio.

If you aren’t familiar with BOYSCLUB yet, wisen up! It’s now 2021 and the patriarchy is cornered, lashing out like a beast with nowhere else to run. It’s time to sound the death knell on misogyny, discrimination and bigotry. But rather than the dreary toll of a bell, we send off the patriarchy with a blast of furious, energised punk rock sent forth from the minds, and amps, of Sydney’s BOYSCLUB!

The new single Best For You premiered on triple j’s Home & Hosed with Declan Byrne, with Declan saying that the new single “…hits a little heavier, it has a grungy appeal, somewhere between head-nodding and headbanging, you’re going to be swaying along to it!” and was promptly added to rotation on triple j Unearthed Radio.

Armed with an unwavering sense of justice for women, non-binary & men for equality, hard-earned life lessons and the legacy of those to have waved the flag of equality before them, BOYSCLUB have tasked themselves with systematically dismantling the prevailing wisdom; to change perspectives on queer empowerment, speak truth to addiction and amplifying the oft silenced voices of the victims of domestic violence.

BOYSCLUB are taking 2021 by the horns, once again lowering their visors to wage a new affront to the way things are – via new single BEST FOR YOU – and tour dates to spread the word. The new single is available at https://gyro.lnk.to/BestForYou.

BOYSCLUB are on tour now through February and March and are hitting Sydney, Bendigo, Melbourne, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Byron Bay, Brisbane, Canberra and Wollongong – see killtheboysclub.com for ticket details!

BOYSCLUB. Forever standing for something more than themselves.

BOYSCLUB’s new single BEST FOR YOU is out now at https://gyro.lnk.to/BestForYou. Video is out now and ticket details for tour dates are available at killtheboysclub.com.

PRAISE FOR INDIGO SPARKE

“I had the privilege and pleasure of getting to help Indigo put these recordings together back in April and throughout 2019. These songs became near and dear to me, and it was beautiful to help build the billowy landscapes within them. Indigo’s writing and voice are ethereal and angelic and guide me through internal canyons and plains. I’m deeply grateful to have been part of this and to have gotten to play and sing along side Indigo, and to have been able to eternalize a very special space and time with her, which I will always cherish.”
– Adrianne Lenker

“With these songs and her filament voice, Indigo brings us in to a private place and lights a fire there.” – Feist

“Indigo Sparke balance[s] heavy, reverb-drenched verses with moments of airy and acoustic whispers. This Australian artist tackles themes of vulnerability and femininity with an eye on life through a different lens.” – NPR, All Songs Considered

“Achingly beautiful and heart-wrenching… Feels impossibly intimate and vast at once, like a cherished secret that, once shared, becomes universal truth.” – Gorilla vs Bear

“Gorgeous and gentle… Sparke sings in an ethereal voice of the kind of love that makes you feel safe.” – Consequence of Sound

“If you like the hushed, delicate folk of Adrianne [Lenker]’s own material, you’re probably going to like this song too. Indigo is a natural, and this song hooks you in with little more than her voice and guitar.” -Brooklyn Vegan

“Sadly beautiful, haunting… Deceptively complex on an emotional level.” – Beats Per Minute

“A glowing guitar lullaby.” – Stereogum

Australian artist Indigo Sparke has today released debut album echo which was co-produced by Sparke, Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker and Andrew Sarlo. Sparke today releases a track by track breakdown of the record via Consequence of Sound. echo is out now digitally and available for vinyl pre-order via Sacred Bones.

To celebrate the release Indigo has announced a six-date AUS tour performing in Eltham, Brisbane, Bellingen, Sydney and Melbourne this March. Full ticket details available below.

Indigo Sparke brings her deeply personal lived experiences to her music, highlighting the spaces between the polarity of softness and grit. Pulling from her experiences of addiction, of healing, of queerness, of heartbreak, of joy, of connection, of the softness and of the grit alchemizing it all into tenderness through her music, she conjures up a myriad of feelings that is undeniably potent.

Indigo was born in the belly of Sydney, Australia straight into the heart of a family with music in their bones. Her parents, a jazz singer and a musician, named her after the Duke Ellington song ‘Mood Indigo,’ and her childhood was spent serenaded by a rich soundtrack of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. From a young age Indigo felt called to the stage, attending a performing arts high school, and followed it with three years in an acting school, working as an actress before embedding herself and heeding the call to the path of music.

Indigo taught herself to play guitar in her early twenties. Over the next few years, she established herself on the Australian music scene, and released her EP Night Bloom in 2016.  Indigo’s career continually bloomed, opening for Big Thief on the Australian dates of their 2017/ 2018 tour, and then was invited to play at South by Southwest 2019. There, NPR‘s Bob Boilen was first taken by Indigo, writing that her lyrics “both cut hard and comfort” and that her performance “balanced heavy, reverb-drenched verses with moments of airy and acoustic whispers.” Sparke began 2020 with a February Tiny Desk Concert at NPR, and had been booked as the opening act for Big Thief‘s sold-out tour of Australia and New Zealand, including a scheduled performance at the Sydney Opera House before Covid-19 saw everything change.

It was in 2019 that Indigo lived and travelled across America, in places like NYC, Minneapolis, Topanga, Taos, in many hotel rooms and amidst the vast stretching landscapes on the never ending highways, channelling her creative energy into the completion of her latest album, echo. echo was recorded between LA, Italy and New York, co-produced by Sparke, Adrianne Lenker (of Big Thief), and Andrew Sarlo (producer of Big Thief, Nick Hakim, Bon Iver, Hand Habits, etc). The record was completed at Figure 8 Studio in New York City, studio of musician Shahzad Ismaily. Phil Weinrobe (producer/engineer for Leonard Cohen, Damien Rice, Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, etc) engineered and mixed the album.

Of this incredibly deep and intimate record, Indigo says, “When writing and recording the record, I wondered how it would all come together. I felt like I was standing back in the desert, looking up at the blue night sky, wondering how all the stars would connect. I think sometimes it’s the dark matter or void space between them, that holds it all together. This record is an ode to death and decay. And the restlessness I feel to belong to something greater. Adrianne and I talked so much about keeping the record stripped back and simple, that is, we are all just constantly getting stripped back and humbled by life.”

Indigo’s art searches for the vulnerability that comes with a feeling of true safety, a vulnerability that can grant access to a world behind tangible experience. It is clear Indigo has lived and woven her many lives into these songs, telling us, “I feel and have often felt a million different women ramble and reconfigure the corners of my mind and soul. I think in my life, I have ricocheted off so many different walls within myself. It’s an endless search to understand the mysteries of life and love and history. As soon as you think you’ve got it, it’s gone. Sometimes I feel so thin. Sometimes I feel so robust. I think that comes through the music.”

While Indigo’s songs are an oceanic experience of emotion, her poetry is grounded. Like stone markers on the path, her poems are left for the reader as crossroads where something takes over beyond the logical mind. The visual realm has always been a part of Indigo’s writing process; songs and poems come to her as landscapes and human compositions, and her relationship with the camera is as natural as with the guitar. Indigo’s photography is a collaborative emotional practice that builds trust with the subject and helps them witness themselves in their most beautiful state. Photography’s compositional power has also led Indigo to re-imagine her work as an actress. Rather than working solely in front of the camera, she is transitioning into a role as composer and creative director, making projects that she can step into as subject rather than object.

“I feel that death and time hang over me like questions, I have felt the shimmer and the edge for so long now but what I long for are the worlds of safety and safe love. There are so many windows in life to look through and so many ways to heal and express. My photography, poetry and music, were born at a juncture mirroring different parts of me. I see and feel visually, I am obsessed with immortalizing memory.”

Just like the fine wine you’ll be sipping on, Grapevine’s musical talent has been designed to be the perfect pairing. The best in Australian talent have been hand-crafted for ultimate pleasure and an aftertaste you’ll never forget.

PEKING DUK

Peking Duk are renowned for giving you high energy dancefloor anthems for the good times. While we have always loved them as a loose-unit electronic act, the moment Adam and Reuben emerged from behind the decks and channelled their antics into the glorious shitstorm of energy that is a Peking Duk live show, they became legend.

JUNGLE GIANTS

With well over 300 million streams worldwide and growing, The Jungle Giants are fast becoming an unstoppable force. Known for delivering explosive high-energy live performances. With headline festival performances under their belt and a rapidly growing international fan base, The Jungle Giants have cemented themselves as one of the biggest independent acts in Australia.

VERA BLUE

The metamorphosis of gifted folk singer/songwriter Celia Pavey into the electro pop powerhouse Vera Blue has been as visually electrifying as it has musically scintillating.

It began with the release of her rapturously received debut album ‘Perennial’. The album saw Vera Blue play 5 completely sold out Australian tours, European/UK and USA dates, and multiple festivals including Lollapalooza and Splendour in the Grass.

THE VERONICAS

Coming back onto everyone’s radars after their song ‘Untouched’ reached new heights as a classic, The Veronicas are riding the wave of a second round of success.

Jessica and Lisa Origliasso, twin girls born on Christmas Day, were teenagers when they moved to LA, signed a record deal with Sire Records and released their first album, The Secret Life Of…. and three top ten singles including the timeless anthem 4Ever.

SAN CISCO

‘Between You And Me’ is the recently released fourth album from the indie trio. It’s an album two years and at least one sadly remembered love affair in the making. Featuring the singles ‘When I Dream’ and ‘Skin’, both triple j Hottest 100 voted songs, the groove-laden ‘Reasons’ and new singles ‘One The Line’ & ‘Messages’, it’s clear ‘Between You and Me’ tells a widescreen story of loss and letting go.

King Stingray

King Stingray are a four piece from Yirrkala, North-East Arnhem Land. Formed by Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (nephew of the late Dr M Yunupiŋu – Yothu Yindi frontman) and Roy Kellaway (son of Stu Kellaway – Yothu Yindi founding member and bass player), King Stingray blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create a genre of their own, Yolŋu surf-rock. Their debut single ‘Hey Wanhaka’ has been met with huge success being added to high rotation on triple j.

Rest For The Wicked

With their debut single on the horizon, Rest For The Wicked are one of the most promising acts in Australia. Think the new school genreless vibe of Dominic Fike and Still Woozy,  the conceptual visual alternative pop of Gorillaz and Empire of the Sun, the raw indie energy of Glass Animals, Twenty One Pilots and Mac Demarco. Slowthai. Watch this space.

A long weekend at the Bowl with two new shows announced: The Cat Empire, and Kids at the Bowl feat. Justine Clarke, Jimmy Giggle and Dan Sultan

written by the partae

The March long weekend just got a whole lot more exciting as Live at the Bowl welcomes the feel-good splendour of The Cat Empire and some family fun with Justine Clarke, Jimmy Giggle, Dan Sultan and Pevan & Sarah from 6 – 7 March.

Hometown festival favourites The Cat Empire are back after the longest absence from a Melbourne stage in their career. The Live at the Bowl show on Saturday 6 March will be their first Melbourne performance in over a year and they could not be happier to be back.

“After the year that’s been, and what it’s meant for live music, we’re truly excited to get back on stage in the heart of the city that raised us. The Cat Empire has always thrived on the live experience; the Sidney Myer Music Bowl show promises to be a real homecoming,” says The Cat Empire’s front man Felix Riebl.

Audiences can expect The Cat Empire’s all-genre-embracing anthems, high-energy performance and sounds to elevate the spirit. This joyful performance will be the perfect soundtrack for a night under the stars.

Supporting The Cat Empire will be “the high priestess of Melbourne soul” (The Music) Kylie Auldist who released a brand new album in November last year called This Is What Happiness Looks Like.

Families and children can also join in the fun with their favourite ABC Kids stars from 6 – 7 March. This one-off weekend event will feature Justine Clarke, Jimmy Giggle, Dan Sultan and Pevan & Sarah as part of Kids at the Bowl.

In four shows only, Australia’s top children’s entertainers will perform a selection of their greatest hits in an all-singing, all-dancing, all-laughing hour of fun! There are very limited tickets available for the family shows so get in quick.

These March long weekend shows are presented in partnership with City of Melbourne.

Tickets will go on sale from 12pm, Friday 19 February via liveatthebowl.com.au

We’re excited to be welcoming visitors back to our venues in line with the most recent Victorian Government guidelines on COVID-19. We have opened our outdoor café Protagonist, the Sunday Markets as well as the Australian Music Vault. These openings coincided with the Live at the Bowl season, which officially kicked off on 8 January 2021.

While the ghost lights will stay on a little longer inside our venues, we will continue to offer audiences the chance to experience the wonder of the performing arts via our digital hub – Together With You. For more information including: our opening plans and related health and safety policies; bookings for free and ticketed events; and other digital content and experiences, please visit artscentremelbourne.com.au.

Peter Noble OAM, Bluesfest Festival Director and Chairman of the Bluesfest Group of Companies announced this morning: “The NSW Government has indicated that, if the current COVID-19 situation continues in NSW, Bluesfest would be permitted to proceed, following our comprehensive COVID-19 safety plan. This is a great day, not only for Bluesfest, but also for the Australian Live Music Industry and our unrelenting efforts to get back to presenting Live Music Safely. Whilst our capacity, stages and campgrounds will be approximately 50% of the numbers we have had in the past, it is great to know there is a future for our industry, and that we have been given the opportunity to present Bluesfest 2021 at a level not seen at festivals in Australia since the summer of 2019/20. We were heartbroken after last year’s cancellation three weeks out from the festival, due to NSW government orders. However, our resolve to present our beloved, multi award-winning festival resulted in our commencing work with Riskworks to create a COVID-19 Safety Plan in May of 2020. We first lodged it with government in August and have continued to refine the plan since that time. We have worked closely with NSW Health in developing the plan and are extremely thankful for their ongoing advice. Certainly, the NSW Events Task Force and the offices of Stuart Ayres, Minister for Tourism and Major Events NSW; John Barilaro, the Deputy Premier NSW; Ben Franklin, NSW Parliamentary Secretary for the Arts; the office of Don Harwin, NSW Minister for the Arts and Paul Fletcher, Federal Minister for the Arts are to be commended for working closely with us on a weekly basis to achieve this milestone result for the music loving people of Australia,” said Bluesfest Festival Director Peter Noble. Bluesfest is a five-time winner of Best Major Event at the NSW Tourism Awards, and a member of the NSW Tourism Hall of Fame, as well as being nominated nine times as Best International Music Festival in the Pollstar Awards which take place in Los Angeles, including their 30th Anniversary edition 2019. “We have an All-Aussie lineup playing at Easter at our purpose-built event site, The Byron Events Farm (formerly Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm) in Byron Shire, 15 minutes’ drive north from Byron Bay. Bluesfest is headlined by an amazing lineup of talent, including Jimmy Barnes, Tash Sultana, Ocean Alley, Ziggy Alberts, The Teskey Brothers, John Butler, Xavier Rudd, The Cat Empire, Kasey Chambers, The Waifs, The Church, John Williamson, Ian Moss, Kev Carmody, Vika & Linda, Chain, Backsliders, Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Blue King Brown, Kate Miller-Heidke, Dami Im, Weddings Parties Anything, Russell Morris, Briggs, Jon Stevens and many, many more.  At the moment we are 80% sold out and our Friday, Saturday and Sunday days are expected to sell out” Noble said. “We will be inspecting the 150-page COVID-19 Safety Plan in depth and will make a further announcement on how Bluesfest will be presented in a safe manner next week. What we can say is that the plan is created in a way where we can adapt to the requirements of the NSW Health Department should there be a need to create higher levels of safety for the public on site, and, of course, we are also hopeful, that conditions will be further relaxed should there be no further community transmissions. The good news is you won’t need to wear a mask currently whilst attending. We are looking forward to seeing your smiling faces as you experience the best in Australian music at an outdoor fully seated event. There are so many people to thank who took part in working with us in getting to this point. The artists and their agents and managers, the media for their ongoing support, our suppliers and of course the Bluesfest Team who never wavered, well … only sometimes, in their conviction to produce Bluesfest at Easter (April 1-5) this year. But number one is, our gratitude to the music fans, who purchased the tickets from the moment we went on sale and who will join us in making history as major live music events return in Australia.” Let’s bring back the music ! TASMAN KEITH & LEAH FLANAGAN
+ SPECIAL ACOUSTIC SET FROM LEAH FLANAGAN

TOUR KICKS OFF NEXT SUNDAY 28 FEBRUARY AT
SIRROMET WINES, MT COTTON!

Frontier Touring are excited to announce that as part of preparations for the WOMADelaide  world premiere of Makarrata Live, Midnight Oil & First Nations Collaborators – Dan Sultan, Alice Skye, Troy Cassar-Daley, Tasman Keith and Leah Flanagan – will perform a special warm-up show on Thursday 25 February at the newly refurbished Enmore Theatre, Sydney. This one-off public intimate performance will showcase works from Midnight Oil and Collaborators from the ARIA chart topping mini-album The Makarrata Project along with iconic Midnight Oil songs of reconciliation. It will also include a special acoustic set from First Nations collaborator Leah Flanagan.

In January 1986, the band played two shows at the Enmore Theatre, marking its debut as a rock’n’roll venue.  With the theatre undergoing a major facelift in the last 12 months, including reinstating many features from the original 1936 plans, it’s fitting for Midnight Oil to once again be one of the first to perform there.

This exclusive concert joins a run of highly anticipated outdoor events at Sirromet Wines, Mount Cotton; Hope Estate, Hunter Valley; Stage 88, Canberra; Mt Duneed Estate, Geelong and the world premiere at WOMADelaide. Tickets to all shows are on sale now. As always fans are asked to avoid purchasing through reselling sites such as ViaGoGo where ticket authenticity cannot be confirmed.

These concerts seek to elevate The Uluru Statement From The Heart which calls for a Makarrata – or “truth telling” – to account for the theft of lands and displacement of First Nations people.

HAYLEY MARY
SHARES NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO
‘WOULD YOU THROW A DIAMOND?’

I OH YOU are excited to share ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’, an explosive rock banger from Hayley Mary. Premiered by Richard Kingsmill on triple j, the new single comes with an energetic, 70’s-tinged video that features bold fashion moments and Hayley’s iconic dance moves. Stemming from an old idea of Hayley Mary’s partner Johnny, ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ is an ode to all the songs that almost didn’t make it.

“‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ started as an old idea of my boyfriend Johnny’s that he had all but thrown out. I could see it was a proper diamond in the dirt that just needed brushing off and shining up.

I changed up the vibe and added some new parts and lyrics to bring out the idea of thinking first before throwing away a thing of inherent value, just because you’re not sure what to do with it right then and there. You never know what new element is around the corner that can bring out the best in something old. So, we named the song ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ in the spirit of what the song was about and the process by which it came together.” – Hayley Mary

VIDEO: Hayley Mary – ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’

On the making of the video that premiered overnight on Gigwise (UK), Hayley reflects: “My dad brought me up to have an almost unhealthy sympathy for the magical old objects one can find in a thrift store. He loved old cars and would never throw anything out, always seeing the treasure in other people’s trash. Pretty much everything that appears in the video is pre-loved or pre-lived in or a little dilapidated, but beautiful Lucy Knox, the director even had a pile of old film lying around at her house, which we also used.”

‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ follows previous single ‘The Chain’ – Hayley’s first single since her debut EP The Piss, The Perfume was released to critical acclaim last year – which saw acclaim from The Line of Best Fit, Paste, Idolator and NME, along with an accompanying video which gained over 40 thousand streams in its first two weeks. The track was closely followed by ‘The Chain (Nude Version)’ which has taken off at streaming platforms, drawing an even wider audience through inclusion on a multitude of acoustic playlists.

‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ is a vibrant reminder of Hayley Mary’s intrinsic ability to create and evolve, and while as a solo artist she might be new to the scene, she is no stranger to compelling song writing.

Hayley Mary recently performed live on Tik Tok as a part of Isolaid Festival, after freshly finishing a nine-date tour of Victoria and is excited at the prospect of taking her live show across state lines this year.

The art of performance photography in collaboration with one of Australia’s leading performance photographers Jeff Busby. By exploring highlights from the rich photographic holdings of Arts Centre Melbourne’s Australian Performing Arts Collection, together with some favourites from his own archive, Busby gives us insight into both the art of photography and the world of the performing arts. “I thought an important factor in this project was how we were able to cross through time and find a commonality in what these images are trying to tell us,” said Jeff Busby. “One of the most fascinating aspects was looking at the Australian Performing Arts Collection and the historic sweep of their work and being shown how performance photography has followed the progression of the performing arts in Australia.” Framing the Stage was developed during Victoria’s second-wave lockdown in 2020 and opened up a dialogue between Busby and the Assistant Curator for the Australian Performing Arts Collection Ian Jackson. Exploring the archive together, they uncovered a number of special moments from Australia’s performing arts history.   “At a time when live performance has been limited, we wanted to remind people of what is so exciting and compelling about the performing arts. Performance photography is like capturing lightning in a bottle, the photographer needs to capture a performer, their role, and the feel of the production, all within a single image,” said Jackson.   “The Australian Performing Arts Collection has a wealth of amazing photographs, covering more than a hundred years of ballet, circus, dance, theatre and opera. We knew that a practising performance photographer like Jeff would bring new insights to them, based on his many years of experience.” “We wanted to take our audiences backstage and behind the camera to see his work - and the photographs in the collection - through his eyes.” The project has resulted in a robustly curated exploration of photographic images, styles and history, combined with unique insights from Busby.    “I found it an extremely rewarding process and allowed me to reflect in a way I perhaps hadn’t been able to until recently. In particular delving into the collection and opening up a whole gamut of thoughts and how the photos over time have fit into the bigger picture,” said Busby. “These moments only happened once, and through these moments, with layering and attention you are able to capture a moment in time which reflects a complex matrix of performance. We’ve managed to uncover and present photos that entice, entertain and have a timeless quality to them.” Online exhibitions have been an incredibly successful initiative for the Australian Performing Arts Collection, allowing audiences all over the world unprecedented access to this rare trove of objects. Framing the Stage adds to the developing wealth of knowledge available through their online portal. You can access Framing the Stage and other exhibitions here. We’re excited to be welcoming visitors back to our venues in line with the most recent Victorian Government guidelines on COVID-19. • 0202 – a forward thinking album for a backwards year is the band’s first self-engineered and produced album
  • The album features singles ‘Live In Life’, ‘Heavy Weather’, ‘Time of My Life’ and current single ‘Masterpiece’
  • First single ‘Live In Life’ was nominated for ARIA Song of the Year, was the 4th biggest Australian song of 2020 & is now certified Double Platinum with over 40 million streams
  • Their 0202 album tour through April-Jul this year will be their biggest Australian headline tour to date
  • Over their career to date The Rubens have 7 singles that have surpassed Gold status + a Gold and Platinum album
Ivy League Records are thrilled to release 0202 – the exceptional fourth album by local legends, The Rubens! Loaded with effortless jams like ‘Live In Life’ (double Platinum, ARIA Song of the Year nominee & the fourth biggest Australian song of 2020 (ARIA)), ‘Time Of My Life’, ‘Heavy Weather’ & current single ‘Masterpiece’, with 0202 the band have fully transformed into an alt-rock/pop powerhouse and, for the first time, have self-produced an album that will have people re-evaluating what they thought they knew about The Rubens.

By the time album opener and absolute belter ‘Masterpiece’ comes to an end, it becomes very clear that The Rubens have emerged inspired from all the twists and turns thrown at them in 2020 and injected a new energy into this incredible record. 0202, a forward-thinking album for a backward year, sees The Rubens creating a sound that effortlessly dances across genres – alt-rock, rnb, pop and hip hop all collide into something uniquely their own.

The band unexpectedly found themselves self-producing what would become their most “pop” sounding album so far, recording everything together in their friend’s Camden-based studio, a converted WWII communications building, simply known as The Bunker, with bass player Will Zeglis taking on the role of engineer. Together they built each track up, starting with drummer Scott Baldwin’s beats, piecing the whole thing together part by part. When they felt like they’d taken a song as far as they could on their own, they would send it on to one of three producers – Kon Kersting, Rob Amoruso or Eric J – depending on what the song needed and who they thought would be best suited to the track, to add extra production and mix the track.

While the recording process might have been a love-in, the album itself isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. With song titles like ‘Muddy Evil Pain’, tunes about retrospectively realising you lost The One (‘Masterpiece’) and lyrics like, “All this heavy weather in my chest again, will I ever see a change?” (‘Heavy Weather’) there’s a melancholic undercurrent to 0202. “It’s a little darker than the last album,” Elliott agrees. “Thematically darker and sonically too. Even though it’s pretty and hi-fi, there’s a lot of darkness there.” If you saw the title of album closer ‘Party’ and were expecting a good time, summer jam, think again. “With anything we do, we can’t help but throw a bit of pessimism in there,” smiles Sam. “We can’t write a song that’s just purely happy and uplifting. I guess it’s just a realistic view, y’know?”

It’s this clash of light and dark that makes 0202, the band’s fourth studio album, such a compelling listen. After four albums and almost ten years together, The Rubens show no sign of slowing down. By being true to their creative instincts, the band have delivered an album brimming with big ideas, clever production and bucket loads of excitement. Or as Elliott simply puts it, “I think it’s our best yet.”

0202 follows third album LO LA RU, which featured hits ‘Never Ever (feat Sarah)’ (Double Platinum), ‘Million Man’ (Certified Gold), ‘God Forgot’ (Certified Gold) and lead to sold out shows and a 42-date Arena tour supporting megastar P!NK. Their second album Hoops saw the band sell out headline shows at Hordern Pavilion and Margaret Court Arena and included hits ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Cut Me Loose’ and of course the 4 x Platinum the hit title track, which topped the 2015 triple j Hottest 100, while their debut self-titled LP was home to ‘My Gun’ (Certified Platinum), ‘Lay It Down’ (Certified Gold), ‘The Best We Got’ and more fan-favourites.

The Rubens are currently half way through their regional NSW album launch shows, and will  kick off their official 0202 album tour from April – July, playing metro cities as well as regional venues across their biggest headline tour to date.

Mysteryland has high hopes that they will be able to transform the former Floriade site in Haarlemmermeer into a magical festival site again from 27 to 29 August and is announcing the start of its ticket sales. The longest-running electronic music festival in the world expects to sell out quickly.

Over 95% of Mysteryland’s loyal visitors have chosen to keep last year’s ticket for the 2021 edition. Mysteryland therefore wants to give its fans a chance to be the first to get a hand on the remaining tickets via an exclusive pre-sale. The fans can register via Mysteryland’s website until 21 February 12PM CET.

The largest dance festival in leading festival country the Netherlands, where headliners such as Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, Nora En Pure, Sven Väth, and Carl Cox previously performed, is hopeful that it will be able to organise an edition this year, despite the rescheduling of last year’s edition.

Milan Raven, Managing Director of ID&T Events: “We are very much looking forward to the moment we can celebrate life together with our visitors. We realize that it’s still uncertain if we can go ahead, but with all the tools that the Dutch government has at its disposal, we are looking at a brighter future than last year. We notice that many people yearn for some form of being together again and are looking for an escape from reality. There’s no place you can do this better than at Mysteryland.”

Mysteryland is known as the perfect end to the festival summer. Every year more than 300 artists from all kinds of different genres perform, from house, deep-house, big room, bass, techno, trap, trance, and minimal to hardstyle, hardcore, R&B, and hip hop. With more than 20 stages, there is something for everyone’s taste. Artistic stages range from open-air dance floors to huge tents with stellar laser shows and state of the art sound. As it’s their tradition to end with a bang on the Saturday and Sunday evenings, Mysteryland has their legendary end-shows full of fireworks on The Main Stage and Q-dance stage.

In addition to the many music stages, there is always much more to discover on the festival site. Many artfully lit paths lead you through forests and fields to hidden places to chill. There are also various art installations, food courts, and unexpected encounters with like-minded people and artists who can surprise you. In addition, there is also lots to explore for spiritual visitors, from cocoa ceremonies and meditation sessions to massages and yoga.

The real diehards can complete their festival weekend by staying at the campsite. Mysteryland camping visitors get an extra festival day on Friday and get a new dimension to their festival experience during the after-parties. There is also a late-night silent disco that goes on for anyone who can’t get enough. For the early birds, there is morning yoga on the camping plaza and at the market, you can have your festival outfit pimped and your hair styled in the latest trends.

Registration for the exclusive pre-sale starts today via mysteryland.nl/register. Fans can register until 21 February 12PM. If Mysteryland 2021 can’t take place this year, visitors have the option for a refund of the ticket.

Mia Dyson announces date changes for Parking Lots 15th Anniversary Australian East Coast 2021 tour!

by the partae February 11, 2021
written by the partae

Off the back of the recent 15-year anniversary reissue of her ARIA Award-winning 2005 album Parking Lots Australian icon Mia Dyson was penned to perform a run of East Coast Australian dates this March. Due to COVID restrictions, Mia has had to postpone all of her upcoming shows but is thrilled to still be able to celebrate the milestone with her VIC and NSW fans, albeit a little further down the road, at her newly rescheduled November dates.

The seasoned Australian artist will take to the road this November for shows across Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne and regional Victoria for her first live shows in well over a year. Tickets are on sale now and in limited COVID capacities, so be sure to get in quick. For those who already snagged tickets, these will be valid for the rescheduled dates.

“I’m so sad to say that due to forces beyond my control, I am having to postpone my Parking Lots tour to November. All your tickets will be valid for the new shows except Brisbane where we couldn’t make the routing work and ticket holders will be issued refunds. We’ll get you next time around.

Unfortunately, this also means I won’t be performing at Bluesfest.

I can’t wait to see you all when these shows finally do happen. Thanks for your support and patience.” – Mia Dyson

In her two-decade long career, Mia Dyson has been nominated for five ARIA Awards with Parking Lots taking out ‘Best Blues and Roots Album’ in 2005. She was the inaugural recipient of Double J’s Artist Of The Year at the 2014 J Awards following the release of her Australian classic LP Idyllwild and has had four albums up for AIR Awards with The Moment earning her a nomination for ‘Song Of The Year’ at the 2013 APRA Awards. Mia Dyson’s extensive career has seen her support the likes of Stevie Nicks, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and Joe Cocker, and most recently touring extensively with her supergroups Dyson Stringer Cloher.

Heading back into the studio in 2020 to revisit five songs from the album, Mia’s Parking Lots (Revisited) EP sheds new light on a selection of her favourite cuts from the record. From beloved single ‘Roll Me Out’ to the stunning homage of motherly love on ‘Rivers Wide’, and the simple yet captivating title track to the empowering ‘Choose’ and heartbreaking ‘I Meant Something To You Once’, the EP captures the sheer musical mastery of an artist who continues to redefine the blues and roots genre, 15 years on, with the rest of her expansive career still to come.
