Multi-genre songstress, vocalist and producer Sôra has shared the live video for “The Grit” which has been taken from her recently released debut EP, “Number One” (23rd November). Her riveting debut single, “Sakura”, was premiered via Kaltblut Magazine with the next intoxicating single “Lifestorm” which was also released via French music and fashion label Kitsuné premiered by Clash Magazine. Near the end of 2017, Sôra collaborated with established Parisian electronic producer Uppermost providing exquisite vocals for his hit single “Step By Step”, which saw inspiring support from various publications such as PAPER Magazine and Magnetic Mag as well as Youtube channels Tasty, Chill Masters and Wobblecraft after receiving just under 1 Million hits via various streaming platforms.

Daughter of a British mother and a French father, Sôra devoted herself to music and arts since she was a child; playing the piano, singing and dancing. With her distinctive, powerful yet velvetine voice now in full flare, she then went on to perform on collaborations with different musicians and producers. Sôra is widely influenced by a wide array of genres, including jazz, rock, and soul and is now comfortably surrounded by her creative and productive teams; Colligence Records and Complice Music, where she takes up management, publishing and label affiliation duties.

Influenced by a plethora of sounds, techniques and artistic visions, Sôra takes direct inspiration from acclaimed artists such as Erykah Badu, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Hiatus Kayiote, and Kendrick Lamar, although her music could be best comparable to similar-sounding artists and acts like FKA Twigs, CocoRosie, Tove Lo and My Brightest Diamond, just to name a few.

Sôra’s latest enthralling output, Number One EP spawns four seductive, engaging tracks; “Lifestorm”, a hypnotic electro-pop shiver bubbling to the brim with celestial sounds and synthesizers, while “Number Won” is a heartfelt ballad covered in immersive percussive bliss as start/stop synths sit atmospherically against Sôra’s strong, light-emitting vocal presentation. “Sakura” is boldly held together by deep, smooth basslines, unpredictable percussive hooks and genre-bent spoken word or hip-hop infused sections all while spilling vulnerable yet confrontational lyrics atop energetic builds. Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
 
I’m based in Berlin and the scene here is one of my favorites worldwide. Besides our history as one of the capitals of electronic music we still have an outstanding and unique club scene. The city offers plenty of great record stores and numerous important music companies are based here too.
You have a new 4-tracker EP called “Day & Night” coming out on Upon.You Records label on December 14th, where and when did you record?
 
I have recorded it over the year in my studio in Berlin.
 
Your studio has been located in Berlin at Holtzmarkt, please describe the setting and atmosphere:
 

I moved here in October 2017 and planned + built the studio in cooperation with a professional acoustic company from Berlin. I just wanted it to be perfect, after always having sound issues in my old studio. It’s quite comfy and much more organized than the previous one. I have a lot of analogue gear in the room as well as my minimized record collection. I love to come here as often as possible.

What influenced the sound and songwriting for the EP?
 
My new studio probably has influenced me the most. It is just another level of working. I’m much more productive and confident here. Furthermore every single experience I make has somehow an influence on me. Recently my kids inspire me a lot. Playing or listening to other people’s music influences me too as well as traveling.
 
Who are you listening to at the moment?
 
At the moment I am listening to the recent albums from Nils Frahm and Nu Guinea.
 
How did you first start playing music?
I was 12 years old when the Berlin Wall came down, so I missed these very special years between ‘89 and ‘92 when the music scenes of east and west Berlin hit each other and something new emerged. When I started to discover this new music, legend clubs like Tresor, E-Werk or Bunker already existed, the first hype was over and Techno and events like the Love Parade became more commercial. For me it was still something completely new and the whole Techno virus got me anyway. 1994 I’ve started to buy vinyl and my story began.
 
You’ve been in the music industry for a long time, how have things changed since you started and where do you see the music industry going?
 
The biggest change is obviously the way of how people consume music nowadays. Streaming is the big thing now. In my case as a DJ it’s the way of how we deejay and from a producer’s perspective definitely the way of how we work in the studio these days. I really can’t tell what’s gonna happen in the future. Fingers crossed that the value of music won’t disappear completely. Listening to music became too cheap in my opinion. The process of writing, composing and producing music is completely underrated and not adequately paid these days.
 
You will be touring in china in the first week of December – 2018, what do you have planned for these shows?
 
It’s gonna be my first time ever in China, so I really can’t say what to expect. But I’m super excited and will do my thing as I always do and will be flexible within my range of styles.
 
Following China you will be hitting Bangkok, Sydney and Melbourne afterwards, what do you most enjoy about touring and what do you find most challenging?
 
I love to travel and discover new cultures, enjoying foreign cuisine and meeting new people. The most challenging is definitely to be away from home and my family.
 
What do you have planned for 2019?
 
I will start 2019 with less touring and more studio time.
 
Favourite food and place to hangout?
 
My favorite food is Thai, Lebanese and Italian. My favorite place to hang out is either my couch or my studio and definitely my parents in law’s terrace in Tuscany.

Acclaimed artist KOLOTO remixes Theodore’s single “Towards?”

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Theodore will be releasing an immersive remix of “Towards?” taken on by English producer and composer Koloto; the remix is set for release on 25th January via United We Fly. Maria Sullivan, better known as Koloto, is an electronic musician, artist and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Canterbury, England. Since the project came into fruition in 2013, Koloto has amassed an impressive 2.3 million plays via YouTube and Soundcloud alone, and has received vast support from the likes of BBC Introducing, XLR8R, Dummy Mag, Impose Magazine, The 405, Dots and Dashes and airplay on BBC Radio 1, ABC National and France Inter, just to name few. A self-taught guitarist, Koloto successfully turned her attention to a variety of instruments, playing and touring with a succession of bands, including serving as bass player for Brighton-based math-rock outfit Delta Sleep (Big Scary Monsters) for 5 consecutive years. As a solo artist Maria has worked with reputable labels such as Bad Panda Records, as well as rising imprints such as Abandoned Building and Secret Songs, who helped get her debut 2014 EP “Mechanica” out into the world, the EP also received remix treatment from talented producers such as Sun Glitters, Set In Sand, Dot, Ekoda Map, CloZee & Escaping Animals, taking on remix work of her own, including that ofrising artists Pick A Piper and Tiger Tsunami leading up to the release of select singles to date, including “Hana” and “Alatheia” propelling her unique songwriting and production skills further with each shining idea brought to life.

 

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Theodore prepares cascading LP “Inner Dynamics” for the 2nd November. Following the release of last atmospheric and stirring singles “Towards? (for what is to come)” and “Spit Blood Out (Single Version)”, the Greek performer has already garnered considerable success with his previous album “It Is But It’s Not” which was co-produced by Clive Martin (Queen, Reef), mixed by Ken Thomas (Sigur Rós, Moby, M83), and performed live at the fabled Studio 2 at Abbey Road Studios. The multi-talented musician’s newest album was completed in May this year, was recorded in a whopping number of different studios, and mastered at Soundgarden in Hamburg, who have worked with huge names such as Franz Ferdinand and Gossip. With nearly 2 million Youtube views, Theodore has supported Sigur Ros and DIIV at Release Festival, graced the stages of Reeperbahn Festival – where he was named Best Performance Of 2017 – performed at Eurosonic Noorderslag and showcased his talents at this years SXSW Festival – where he was picked as NPR Music’s ‘SXSW 2018: Favorite Discoveries And Memorable Moments’. Theodore has received support from tastemaker publications such as CLASH Mag, Music Week, Tsugi, FGUK, Gaffa and Szene, and radio play from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, while his single “Towards? (for what is to come)” is currently playlisted on renowned national radio stations NPR All Songs 24/7 Music (USA) and Flux Passport Approved (Germany).

 

Fusing classical composition with electronic elements to create beautiful, atmospheric and often cinematic songs, Theodore’s sound is characterized by contrasting styles. Citing influences such as Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Doors, Chatzidakis, Vagelis Papathanasiou, Nils Frahm, The National, Olafur Arnalds, Arcade Fire and Max Richter, his unique mélange of influences allow a broad scope of movement, from ethereal classical movements to driving, melancholic post-rock sections. While Theodore’s unique sound is eclectic in it’s own way, the same can be said for Koloto’s, whoselush and unique sound can be described as a dream-inducing blend of genres like electronica, post-rock, trip-hop, chillwave and glitch. With influences leaning towards edIT, Four Tet, Baths and Amon Tobin, if Nosaj Thing and Shlohmo merged together, it would come out sounding a lot like Koloto. It’s no surprise that this skilled songstress has crafted something so personally distinctive, enjoyable and on point in just about every experienced mood possible.

 

Koloto’s remix of “Towards?” heightens the ethereal nature of the track, with crisp clicks, snaps and dreamy water-droplets pushing Theodore’s mesmerising vocal melodies along over mystical synth-sounds. Koloto manages to blend her signature sound of trip-hop-inspired drumbeats and spaced-out melodies flawlessly with Theodore’s haunting vocals and experimental instrumental flair, creating a whole new track that swirls like a dreamscape around the listener, clicking and whirring over blissful choral melodies and reminding us that anything is possible.

 

On the Koloto remix of “Towards?”, Koloto says, “I’ve had my head (and studio) fully immersed in my own music for the last year or so, so it was great to be asked to work on this beautiful track by Theodore. I’ve a tendency to over complexify things when it comes to making music, so with this one I really wanted to exercise some restraint. The original track has some really solid melodies and progressions, so my aim was to try and create a simple percussive backdrop that would allow them to play out.”

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I’m based in Belgium, in my hometown Namur. It’s been a while since the electronic music scene in Belgium is more into techno. Different from the time I’ve started to get involved with electronic music (end of 80’s) where was basically called “newbeat” – end of new wave, mixed with techno.

Please tell us about your latest and forthcoming releases -we know you’ll be back on Dirtybird + the release for Warung Records…- what else?

That’s right, my next release (March 2019) on Dirtybird is gonna be again for the Barbecue compilation (early this year I had a track at same compilation). The one for Warung is a collab with Ron Carroll, he’s de voice of the famous “Lucky Star” with a remix from Phonique, good because both of us has a history with the Club (Warung).  Upcoming for next year there is a few remixes and solo releases at the labels Sweat Club (Australia), Moonbootique (Germany), Animal Language (Netherlands), Bunny Tiger (Germany) and of course at LouLou Records.

What has influenced the most Kolombo’s sound, and how do you usually go about writing music?


I’ve been influenced by many sounds, I have a huge background on old school sounds of any kind, old hip hop, funky, house, techno to name a few, I am very eclectic when is about music. I don’t have any special way to write music, it depends of my inspiration at the time, sometimes I am more on the mood for melodic, but lately I’ve been more into house and techno.

You are the co-owner of LouLou Records! How and why did you decide to start the label (back in 2005, right)?

We started (LouLou Players and I) the label in 2004. At the beginning was just to release our own tracks only on vinyl and also to be able to have a space to bet in new talents that we believe in.

What do you find most challenging and rewarding about running your own imprint?

The challenge is to get support from other artists, especially bigger ones, to play our releases and believe in what we are doing. The reward is to get this support, especially because we focus on new talents.

LouLou Records released the new ‘Sinner & James – All About EP’ a few days ago, can you tell us how the process of putting this EP together and what it means to you?

These guys are from Canada and they had a previous EP released 2 months ago at the label, we really believe on their work, they have an old school touch on house which we really like. It’s the kind of new talent we like to bet on.

How did you get into and learn all about tech / studio production? What programs and equipment do you use to produce and record music?

I’ve learn by myself back in the end of 80’s with the Atari 1400 ST and Akai S900, I think it was the first machine for that, with 3 floppies for the Cubase program. Now I use manly MKS-80, MKS-50, Jupiter 4, Siel Opera 6, Nord Rack, Roland SH32 to name a few.

What do you most enjoy about writing, recording and performing music?

I love everything. I like parties, of course, but I also love to have my studio time alone. I’m a nerd.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Many things, at the moment Childish Gambino, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Dilated Peoples, A Tribe Called Quest, Roberta Flack, George Benson, Norah Jones, Sampa The Great, Syl Johnson and more.

What is your opinion of ADE Event Amsterdam? How profitable for business can be? What activities / showcases have you been doing this year?

ADE is amazing! It’s the time and place for who work in the electronic music industry to be. I’ve been going every year since probably 10 years ago. But this year was good; we could make so many connections and meetings. It’s a shame because I always want to attend more panels of the conference, but as we have a lot of meetings this is not possible. I could be to our showcase, its being going on at Up Club for 4 years already.

What do you have planned for the remainder of 2018 going into 2019?

I’ve took one month off for studio time, after Christmas I am going to my annual South America summer tour till the end of January – I’ll be playing in many places on Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.

Favourite food and place to hang out?

I love pretty much every food, but specially Thai and Japanese. Place to hang out is my friend’s bar/store called Art Salon in Namur (my hometown) is very chilled and I can meet all my friends there. I can arrive there at any time of the day; I’ll meet some good friends around.

Australia can’t get enough of Doorly. The local favourite and all-round fun guy has been a staple in the global dance scene for over 5 years after moving through the ranks faster than most could (even Pete Tong named him as a future star). Doorly soon found himself playing on the globe’s most reputable dancefloors, so skilled at his trade that Pete Tong requested he record a live BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix direct from a club.

From DJing at Times Square to remixing the likes of Kanye West,The Prodigy and Basement Jaxx, Doorly is creatively in a league of his own. Now his own record label Reptile Dysfunction, which presents frequent releases of his own work, is becoming a bona fide brand of its own. Recently London club fabric invited the label and Doorly to host a night at the legendary venue, and Doorly ended up playing B2B with house legend Green Velvet for five hours. WIth 15 dates in under a month, there can be no doubt that Australia loves Doorly.

It’s been just a few years since Pete Tong touted Doorly as a future star, but not even the Radio 1 icon could have predicted just how rapid his ascent would be. As of 2016, he can already add two Essential Mixes, multiple Beatport and Traxsource No.1s, including a month-long stint at No.1 in the Beatport Chart with ‘Gravity Check’ (one of 2016’s biggest summer records), production for Usher and Nicki Minaj, sharing the stage with The Prodigy & LCD Soundsystem, acclaimed releases on Cajual, Dirtybird and Hot Creations and studio collaborations with Green Velvet, Switch & Grandmaster Flash to his ever-growing list of achievements.

Doorly cut his teeth in his native Huddersfield, running his own party and booking the likes Armand Van Helden, Fatboy Slim, Erol Alkan, Annie Mac, 2 Many DJs and eventually Pete Tong, who was so impressed by his ability behind the decks that he offered him a Live Radio 1 Essential Mix direct from the club. Following this seal of approval, Doorly’s gig schedule took on a life of its own, with DJing in Time Square New York, and every major festival plus touring regularly alongside Fatboy Slim & Soulwax just some of the highlights.

At the same time as touring, Doorly was working hard honing his craft in the studio, establishing himself as a versatile, in-demand producer. Remix work for an enviable list of A-list acts followed, with imaginative reworkings of tracks from Kanye West, The Prodigy, Claude Vonstroke, Groove Armada and Basement Jaxx setting Doorly on a different creative level to many of his peers.

In 2012 Doorly relocated to Los Angeles, California. From this base he launched a diverse array of his own parties, ranging from sunshine house and disco gatherings on the rooftops of Austin at SXSW & Miami with Skream and Jackmaster, to 2000 capacity ‘secret’ warehouse parties in Downtown LA. From humble beginnings, these Doorly & Friends Events have gone on to establish residencies at Ministry of Sound (London), AIR (Amsterdam), Sound (Los Angeles) and Canal Mills (Leeds), Space & Pikes Hotel (Ibiza), Sisyphos (Berlin) plus regular parties in Miami, San Francisco, Asia and across the world including a mansion party at Coachella at which Disclosure played after their main festival appearance.

In 2014 he achieved what he had been threatening to for some time, topping the Beatport overall chart with his Shadow Child collaboration ‘Piano Weapon’. In that same year, Doorly & Cajmere’s ‘The Way’ sat at No.1 overall on Traxsource and in the top 10 of the Beatport house chart for over a month, with his releases being hammered by the likes Maceo Plex, Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, Skream, Jackmaster, Agoria & Annie Mac to name a few.

2015 alone saw Doorly releases on Cajual, Dirtybird, Moon Harbour, Toolroom and Hot Creations; an impressive list of labels that demonstrate the towering standards he sets himself, as well as the high regard his production are held in by many of the industry’s tastemakers.

Above all else however, Doorly is first and foremost a DJ, with his dedication to and passion for the craft apparent to everyone who sees him perform. Sets are played out across four CDJs & Vinyl plus samplers and FX units, and he is a firm believer that a DJ set should be a live, unique experience. To that end, Doorly continues to work alongside Pioneer as one of its Pro-DJ Ambassadors and is directly involved with testing, design and training with Pioneer DJ equipment together with fellow craftsmen James Zabiela & Eats Everything.

Also Doorly’s performance skills have now been enlisted by Dolby who are launching a new 5.1 surround sound club system which Doorly demonstrated at Ministry of Sound in May and will tour in Full worldwide as Dolbys ambassador in January 2017.

In Ibiza, Doorly maintains as unyielding a presence as ever, with his 11th season living on the island including gigs at Pacha, Pikes Hotel, Ibiza Rocks and Space – for what was the legendary venue’s final season and Doorly Hosting the main room with his Doorly & Friends Brand as well as playing the final Closing Party – while Doorly & Friends went from strength to strength with takeover shows at Snowbombing Festival, Rainbow Warehouse Birmingham, Beatherder and various other workdwide Festivals in FIJI, North America and Australia.

On the production front, 2016 has progressed in impressive fashion. In February Doorly dropped his hugely anticipated remix of Carl Craig & Green Velvet’s ‘So What’, with that same month seeing the release of ‘Want Silver’, a collaboration with ZDS on David Squillace’s This & That imprint. Further production triumphs came in the shape of remixes of Claptone ‘Anything’, a remix for Fatboy Slim’s alias “Mighty Dub Katz, an acclaimed three track EP ‘ Rabbit Hole’ on Cajual and ‘Gravity Check’, A collaboration with House Legend Marshall Jefferson on Dirtybird records and a collaboration with Darius Syrossian that sat atop the Beatport tech house chart for over a month and was without question one of the biggest tracks of the summer.

October see’s Doorly Hit the road for a jam packed USA Solo headline tour and well as a 2nd tour of America as Support For Booka Shade on their Live Shows. Finishing off 2016 with a run of shows that will take him all the way around the globe in quick succession hitting Asia, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Bali, Thailand and the notorious Holy Ship Cruise in the Carribean all in the space of a month.

Sydney band Erthlings today share their new video for single ‘Cuts & Bruises’, directed by Cybele Malinowski and choreographed by Sydney Dance Company’s Larissa McGowan, along with 4 incredible young dancers.

Cybele Malinowski shares, “The Cuts & Bruises video explores the pervasive poison that can quietly corrode a relationship, playing between the switches of joy/apathy, passion/rage & love/hate. These themes are visually illustrated with the use of saturated colour gels & symbolised through powerful and emotionally charged choreography.”

The video follows the release of ‘Cuts & Bruises’ this month and debut single ‘Bridges’, which saw the band earn early praise form the likes of triple j, Zane Lowe and Matt Wilkinson from Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio, The New York Times, NME, MTV, and more.

Pursuing the conceptuality of Frank Ocean, the accost of James Blake and the expanse of Bon Iver, ‘100x’ captures a sonic soundscape distorted with mesmerising emotions through the soaring vocals and swirling reverberating tones, an individualistic sound for BENTLE as Australia’s newest producer.

JOYCE MANOR ANNOUNCE 2019 AUSTRALIAN EAST COAST TOUR

Handsome Tours is excited to reveal that enigmatic Epitaph rockers Joyce Manor will return to Australia in February/March 2019, playing shows in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne as well as Wollongong’s The Farmer & The Owl Festival. 

The headline run follows a huge visit in 2017 which saw Joyce Manor play to sold out rooms supporting The Smith Street Band as well as their own sweaty club shows. The tour celebrates the release of Joyce Manor’s acclaimed fifth album ‘Million Dollars To Kill Me’ released in September on Epitaph.

If Joyce Manor’s 2016 release ‘Cody’ was about growing up, then ‘Million Dollars To Kill Me’ is about what happens next—the reckonings with love, money, doubt and confusion, and the hope that persists despite it all. The title stems from a memorable moment in Blink 182 drummer Travis Barke’s memoir, in which he recounts offering a friend a million dollars to end his life. It’s a sad and unsettling story, and thus perfectly representative of the Californian quartet’s sound.

Recorded with Kurt Ballou of Converge, the album is awash with a tangible, almost haunting yearning.  It is “filled with miniature spaces containing huge, overwhelming anxieties, in short digestible punk” (Spin Magazine). It has seen this much loved Epitaph Records signing continue to mature, “their willingness to expand the subtleties of their sound making for an enthralling listen” (Pitchfork).

Joyce Manor formed in Torrance, California in 2008. Their self-titled first album, released in 2011,was sharp and sad and as a result found forever homes on many a Tumblr blogger’s  Best Of. Its final track, “Constant Headache” eventually became the band’s most enduring song, cementing their sound as amalgamation of sad and tough at the same time using vocalist Barry Johnson’s mix of major and minor chords.

Zeal & Ardor Announce Australia & New Zealand Stranger Fruit Tour 2019

Zeal & Ardor is truly a musical force like no other. A one-time experiment of Swiss-American mastermind Manuel Gagneux, the avant-garde combination of negro spirituals and black metal embraced on his 2015 album Devil Is Fine quickly connected with several previously unstruck chords – as though American slaves had found Satanism rather than Christianity. After being invited to play the illustrious Roadburn Festival while still a bedroom concoction, a full lineup was soon established, and the global rollout begun. 2018’s follow-up Stranger Fruit took the now-complete band to new heights of powerful weirdness and sharp social commentary, and has already seen their name emblazoned on several high profile end of year lists – including those of the revered Decibel and Revolver magazines. This experiment is emboldened and only just beginning.

Making their debut Australian appearance alongside Deafheaven at the Perth Festival in February 2019,Zeal & Ardor will then perform a string of exclusive headline shows in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, as well as jumping across for an exclusive appearance in Wellington, New Zealand.

Sun-kissed beats and tropical vibes collide on the line up for Australia’s newest boutique beach party, UP DOWN – washing over Newcastle Foreshore on Sunday 17 March.

What is your name and role within Kids At Midnight?

My name is Jane Elizabeth Hanley and I am the Singer, Songwriter, Engineer, Producer, Mixer, Record Label, CEO…lol yeah it’s just me.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I’m based between Brunswick and a little country town on the coast Cape Paterson where I grew up. I split my time fairly evenly. I romantically can’t let go. I’m just a small town girl.

How did you first start playing music?

I was always singing and dancing at dance school since I was a little girl. I played saxophone in the high school band in year 7 but you can’t sing with a sax in your mouth so I stopped… I kinda wish I hadn’t! But I knew I wanted to write songs so I bought a cheap second hand guitar when I was 16 and taught myself to play by watching Oasis videos.

You’ve recently released a single ‘By Your Side’ what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?

It’s pretty unashamedly 80s. I’m someone who wears her musical influences on her sleeve. But the sound of a John Hughes soundtrack…the twinklie-ness of the final scene of an 80s movie, it’s just an unashamed romance that’s not cool anymore… that’s what I dig so that’s what I made.

How has ‘By Your Side’ been received by fans and critics?

I’ve had some really lovely messages from fans about it and Dec Byrne’s Unearthed review was pretty perfect he said, “swaying with my high school crush under the disco ball at the end of the year dance to this…” it’s like he pulled the mood file from my brain! So I think it’s being received well! As much as you can really know.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Jack Rivers album is too sick for words. Haim and Phoenix will always be on rotation with me. And then my classics on rote. Heart, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Spandau Ballet… I run a Saturday night called ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ which is basically like a Bluelight Disco for adults, it’s all nerdy pop from all eras but it’s like the most amazing night. So I’m always inadvertently listening to the best songs of all time lol

How do you usually go about writing music?

If I’m at home I’ll jump on Ableton and start playing something on the keys or guitar, sing a long in gibberish until it starts to take form or story. Or if I’m driving (things come to me a lot when I’m driving to the coast) I’ll record little voice memos of lines or melodies.

You have an album coming out in 2019, can you please give us an idea of what to expect?

The album is a dreamy indie synth soundtrack to a movie that you can’t remember seeing but you somehow know. I hope it sounds like driving around the coast road in a thinking of the one you can’t have, LA nights, small town summers and slow motion 80s romance.

Where and when did you record?

It’s all recorded in my spare room. I call it the ‘studio’ but my boyfriend also has his computer in there so we have to call it the ‘Studio/Gaming Room’ but that’s just to be nice. He has a little corner.

I hear that you wrote, produced and engineered / recorded the whole album yourself, why did you choose to do everything yourself?

It’s a combination of things. The fact that I can is one. It gives me time to fit recording in with my everyday life but also money is a big thing for an independent artist. I’m one person so the cost of an engineer, studio time, producer, mixer is a little scary. So I did it all myself.

How and where did you learn the skills to write music and also produce and record?

In terms of songwriting think you learn over your life of listening. I wanted to write pop songs ever since I was little but I couldn’t, I didn’t play, so once I taught myself what chords were I just ferociously went at it. Songwriting is a luxury I don’t take lightly. In terms of recording, my brother and I went halves in a Tascam 4 track tape recorder in 1997. I tried as hard as I could to record little demos on that but really some years went past, I was in an electronic duo and the guy did all the producing. We got really into it and then he decided to not do music anymore and I was kind of like, “nnnoooooooo what am I going to dooooo??!” And then after a week or so of feeling sorry for myself I just thought, “ Well you’d better learn to do it yourself then hey!” And I got Ableton, watched the Tutorial CD over and over and just tried and failed until I was making things that sounded ok. Then the next thing sounded a bit better. And that took about 3 years until the first thing I released sounded really good.

What programs and equipment did you use?

I used Ableton (bless, saved my life) a Mac, Universal Audio Apollo Twin Duo, a Shure sm7b I’ve had for 7 years I bought because it was the mic Michael Jackson recorded Thriller on, midi keyboard, a Squire Strat because I can’t afford a real Strat and my Taylor Semi Acoustic.

Triple J has been showing you a lot of love, what do you think it is about your music the resonates so well with so many people?

I really don’t know. I don’t think you can know why people like your music. I’ve had some people mention similar things that they can immediately picture themselves in my songs like a movie, I write pretty cinematically, and that’s what I want people to feel., I used to exist solely to consume movies. I’ve always been a daydreamer. Pretending I was this character or that character so maybe, hopefully, that has switched to my songwriting.

You’ve had 2 million Spotify streams to date, how has this massive exposure helped to propel your musical career?

Spotify plays have exposed my music to so many more people than I could have myself. And people all over the world. It’s just opened up the net of people that would’ve heard my stuff. It’s helping with the album and the prospect of touring in the future because you can see where people are listening to there’s some cool stuff coming up. It’s also allowed me to do some mentoring to learning Producers with The Art Centres ‘Operator’ Series, which is pretty cool because when I was learning I felt like I didn’t have anyone to ask, so it’s been really awesome to be able to help other female and female identifying producers who are starting out.

Your previous single was synced with MTV’s infamous Jersey Shore, how did this come about?

That was a while ago. It happened from MySpace! That was when Rich (we’re still great mates) was in Kids At Midnight and we wrote these little electro pop gems and we got a message from the MTV Music Licensing Department and we were like, ‘Yeah right…SUUUUUURE you’re from MTV.’ But it turns out she was. And we signed and the track is on Season 3 and it comes up on the screen and I will always think that is so cool.

What do you have planned for 2019?

The album is out early in the year along with the second single so I just can’t wait for that! I’m completely busting! I’ll be doing a little tour for that. I want to go back to LA for a bit and write for other artists too, so I’m constantly writing tracks. I also want to release other artists on my label.

What do you like to do away from music?

Well I work as a DJ and a Dance Teacher so I’m never really away from music. But when I’m away from music I just want to sit near or IN the water and have some bevies with my mates and tell jokes and get up to shenanigans. I write a lot and have just gone back to tinkering with screenplays I’ve written in the past. Apart from 80s movies I also am a bit obsessed with British historical documentaries (I’m so cool)

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My Mums Spag Bol. Obvs. Fave place to hangout…a mates back yard, my sisters balcony, Cape beach, anywhere there’s my mates, my fam, a Bev, tunes.

Mysterious Sydney musician Love Deluxe is an unknown quantity but a very familiar feeling. Conjuring images of hot days and longs nights, LD makes music to worship the sun to. Originally composing music as the band leader at a local discotheque for good-looking tourists and rich locals alike, Love Deluxe takes cues from artists such as Roy Ayers, Man Parrish and Steely Dan alongside Japanese funk maestros like Tatsuro Yamashita and Taeko Ohnuki. Jess Zammitt (AUS)

Infected with a fascination for exploring the narrative in music, for Jess selection is far more than just sound, genre or labels. The track needs meaning and with meaning comes purpose. Whilst Jess maintains an unfettered approach to such selection, her worldly taste often finds her visiting Belgian New Beat, Dutch EBM chuggers and energetic Italo oddities. The calm nature and ever-present smile of Jess Zammit is one of the more misleading cues in the DJ circuit. Her energy behind the decks is frenetic and her sound, often twisted. This commitment to her craft has seen her support internationals including Hodge and DJ Slyngshot, and landed her sets at this years’ Strawberry Fields and Hopkins Creek festivals. Pursuing dance as a journey of multisensory exploration, the Salvador Darling experience is a holistic marriage of ultra considered production synced with the delivery of music. An artist on many levels, Salvador is deeply involved in the considered curation of aesthetics, the stages, the shows, performances and promoters of his gigs. Bicep (Live) (UK)

If there is one act who can lay claim to owning 2018 so far it will be Ireland’s Bicep. Their self-titled debut album shot to the top of many best-of-2017 lists, laying the foundation for a 2018 which can only be described as a year where they went from one’s to watch to dead set headliners. Their live shows are selling out globally in record time, the most recent example being three shows at the three thousand capacity Printworks in London which all sold out in minutes of its announcement. The duo is by far one of the biggest electronic music acts in the world, and easily one of Melbourne’s favourite international artists. Motor City Drum Ensemble (GER)

Simultaneously retro and futuristic, German House pioneer Danilo Plessow, ‘MCDE’, is a reference to his home-town as to his first love in music, the soul, jazz and techno sounds of Detroit. As Danilo stays true to his underground roots with a variety of projects, he has managed to be published on no less than 25 labels. Today MCDE is renowned for his eclectic taste in music and his technical wizardry in producing, both of which have made him a globally profiled DJ and producer, who has been re-defining house music over the last years. soundcloud 

Ama Lou (UK)

Authentic, natural, soulful, Ama Lou has already gracefully established herself as a rising star with just a handful of songs. Born and raised in London and classically trained as a singer, she made her musical and visual introduction to the world with ‘TBC’ in 2016, which immediately put her on the map as one to watch. A complete DIY artist, Ama Lou writes and produces her own music (alongside collaborations) and creates all her own visuals and films with her sister Mahalia. Her next project ‘DDD’ is a three-part film and EP directed and co-produced by her, made up of a triptych of music videos individually set at Dawn, Day and Dusk, following the character of Ama Lou, a younger in an LA crime ring, over the course of a single day. soundcloud

CC:Disco! (AU)

Playing disco, house and boogie cuts with her heart at the controls, CC triggers a joyous feedback loop that infects the dancefloor. There’s no pretention, only pure feeling. A mainstay of the Melbourne club scene, CC began connecting with audiences just like the heroes before her – through FM radio. Having presented shows since the age of 15, her weekly slot on local institution PBS FM ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ is now celebrated as the essential start to every Friday night. All of this airtime has primed her to knock out guest spots on NTS, Red Light Radio and Dublab. In recent years, CC’s devotion has seen her graduate to touring DJ and main stage festival act. soundcloud

Chaos In The CBD (NZ)

Perhaps best known for their stratified, ear-catching rhythms, Chaos In The CBD is the house moniker of New Zealand brothers Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales. Though their music evokes the time-honoured heritage of classic house, their interpretation of jazz brings a unique inventiveness to the genre. With ever-strengthening production credentials, and infectious, joyous rapport while performing, Chaos In The CBD has marked themselves as one of the most eminent underground house artists to emerge out of the South Pacific. DJ Boring (AUS)

In 2016, Tristan Hallis, better known as DJ Boring, sent shockwaves through the underground when his track “Winona” appeared on the iconic Slav Youtube channel. The track, comprised of simple, melodramatic chords, modulated acidic klangs, a syncopated, chilled out 909 groove, and a sampled Winona Ryder interview, not only changed the landscape of house music but seemed to define dance music for a new generation. Hallis’ abilities are beyond simply being able to write clever melodies and stomping rhythms. His unique talent lies in knowing when to pull back, when to go all in, when to pause – an instinct that usually takes years of development, and that he further demonstrates with his prowess behind the decks. Since his debut on DJ Haus’ E-Beamz, he has released music on Lost Palms, LPH White, and his newly founded label, Vienna. soundcloud 

 

DJ Tennis (ITA)

Founder and A&R of Life and Death, Manfredi Romano grew up tour-managing punk bands and organising left-field music events in Italy around the turn of the millennium. Manfredi then went on to form DAZE, Italy’s first booking agency solely devoted to electronic music. Drawing on two decades of experience behind the scenes, Romano shifted focus in 2010, establishing himself as a DJ in his own right and building upon his vinyl record collection – which now numbers over eleven-thousand strong. Today the Italian is considered one of the world’s most revered selectors, an artist who commands your attention in a way that is undeniable. soundcloud


Esther Silex (GER)
Esther Silex: deejay extraordinaire, Colognian woman-about-town and a newly minted card-carrying member of the Studio Barnhus family (the label co-founded by Swedish star Axel Boman and Kornel Kovacs). She has an unquestionable status as an impassioned powerhouse with enough West German swagger to create timeless music with equal parts simplicity and beauty. Her sets are anything but predictable, with an eclectic selection that somehow weaves seamlessly through techno and house to soul, funk, afro and disco. soundcloud
  
Flava D (UK)
Flava D is at the meeting point of house, UK Garage and grime with salutations for her versatile productions coming from veterans like DJ EZ and frequent collaborator Wiley. As a core member of the Butterz record label she has toured extensively internationally across the UK, Europe, Australia and Asia winning over ravers with her energetic club sets. She is a prolific producer and remixer and in the last 12 months, her remixes for Craig David and Diplo have amassed hundreds of thousands of plays. Her part as 1/3 of Garage supergroup ‘t q d’ alongside Royal-T & DJ Q has seen even more productions hit the airwaves. soundcloud

 
Joe Kay (USA)
Joe Kay is the CEO and co-founder of Soulection, a globally recognized platform for future music and artist development. As Head of A&R as well as a host of Soulection Radio on Beats1 and an active DJ in the worldwide music community, Joe oversees all artists while digging for the timeless “Sound of Tomorrow” to share with the world. Kahn and Neek (UK)
Hailing from Bristol (U.K) and having grown up immersed in the city’s renowned culture of sound systems, punk rock and hip hop; Kahn and Neek is at the forefront of the new wave of Bristol producers and DJs and they are considered one of the leaders of the UK Grime sound that is currently permeating global music. Their production style tends to draw influence from dub reggae, early 2000’s grime, digital dancehall, UK steppers and music from across the 140bpm spectrum. As part of the Young Echo collective, Kahn has also explored other areas of electronic music and incorporates his own vocals and instrumentation into his sound. Midland (UK)

Midland made his 2010 debut alongside longtime friend Pearson Sound with their anthemic track “Your words matter”, a track that would go on to be placed in DJ Mag’s “100 most important house records” feature. Within the track the pair wove, defied and played with a number of genres and, in doing so, Midland laid a clear foundation stone for his vision of how electronic music could be. It is a sound that is rooted in house and techno but with the rumbling low end of Dubstep and widescreen experimentation of classic electronica. He’s performed alongside the likes of MC Hammer and Bassnectar, reached #1 chart positions on Beatport, Addictech, and iTunes, and his full-length release, “Slurp And Giggle” was nominated for Best Dance / Electronic Release at the Australian Independent Music Awards (and it was also the most downloaded album for on addictech.com the year of its release). His remix credits span world renown artistic icons like Infected Mushroom and Kaya Project, and music from the Opiuo Lab can be found on television, in documentaries, on the radio (BBC Radio One + JJJ) and specifically selected for compilations by artists such as BT (Black Hole Recordings). Indeed, he inspires people all over the globe with his highly original and uncontrollably addictive take on fun-fueled electronic music. Peggy Gou (GER)

Born and raised in South Korea and now residing in Berlin following several years studying in London, Peggy Gou made her recording debut in January 2016 on Radio Slave’s Rekids label. Since then Peggy has gone on to arguably become the most popular DJ on the globe. Not only is she a model, fashionista, songstress, DJ and all-round beautiful soul, she knows what constitutes a good earworm: Her single ‘It Makes You Forget’, released earlier this year on tastemaker imprint Ninja Tunes, is a prime example of dance music gone pop, and will go down as one of the European summer’s biggest tracks. After a solid 2018 of shows and releases, Perth based rapper José Halftime is closing off the year in style with his latest single ‘Cashmere’. The self produced street anthem is a testament to Jose’s brand that has earned him a spot in the new wave of Australian Hip-Hop, playing showcases across the country including the annual WVS showcase in Melbourne and Get Bodied Festival in Perth earlier this year.

‘Cashmere’ serves as a reminder to those persisting with their dreams as Jose urges his audience to keep pushing through any hardships they may have been dealt. The comforting message of support is also met by an effortless swag that see’s Jose glide through this release with raw talent that is relatable to his listeners.
