The Remarkable Year of Wafia

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

WAFIA left a major mark on the musical landscape of 2018. With unanimous critical acclaim, over 100 million streams, her first headlining tour in Europe, sold-out shows in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, San Francisco, Toronto and throughout her home country of Australia, and debut performances at Red Rocks and Coachella, the confident yet unassuming indie pop powerhouse has proven to be a force to be reckoned with and one of the most exciting artists to watch for as we head into 2019.

As Nylon commented, “the buzz surrounding [Wafia] is remarkable”. The Fader praised her “golden, honeysuckle-sweet voice”, Teen Vogue called her one of the “artists you should be listening to before the end of 2018” and Vogue said that the 25-year-old singer is “single handedly shaking up the music industry with her purposeful pop.”

Her latest song ‘I’m Good’ has become one of the most buzzed-about songs of the past few months with V Magazine calling it “a breakup bop for the ages”, Refinery 29 highlighting the track’s relatability, saying “Wafia has reached into my soul and ripped out my experiences with breakups and turned them into a perfect song” and Billboard declaring that it “puts Wafia’s confident charisma in plain view.”

Watch a playful new homemade video for ‘I’m Good’ that Wafia recorded at home in Brisbane with her sister Hibba and puppy Khalil, HERE.

Along with I’m Good’, her VIII EP and her Louis the Child-collab on their track ‘Better Not’, Wafia has notches over 100 million streams in 2018 alone. EP cut ‘Bodies’ caught attention from the likes of Vice Broadly, Nylon and Ladygunn for its pointed lyrics addressing the Syrian refugee crisis. 2018 also found Wafia scoring her first appearance on the Billboard charts (‘Better Not’ on the Hot Dance/Electronc Songs chart), and major success on triple j with ‘I’m Good’ being named the 5th most played song of the year.

Wafia shares, ”2018 was so good to me. Between my ‘VIII’ EP coming out earlier in the year, to “Better Not” and then “I’m Good” & all the touring, this is one of those years that shaped me,” said Wafia, adding “To go out on the road and personally see how the music is connecting with people in places I’ve never been but my music has, is the most rewarding part of it all. I did a lot of writing this year too, and I’m most excited for the new year to share where my mind has been at. I feel like 2018 was just setting me up for a particularly special 2019.“

2019 will see exciting new music from Wafia, international tour dates, and more.

‘I’m Good’ is out now via Future Classic, buy/stream it here.

“Stand-out stellar musicianship” – Depth Magazine

“A true testament of alternative rock” – VultureHound

Canberra’s Hands Like Houses are stoked to reveal alt-rock outfit Endless Heights and heavy genre-bending RedHook will join the previously announced Ocean Grove as national supports on their 2019 Australian tour. Kicking off in February, the shows follow the release of their fourth album –Anon, which made its ARIA debut at #4, bolstered by the massive hit singles ‘Monster’ and ‘Overthinking’.

Tickets to all shows on sale now via handslikehouses.net.

Fresh from a 28-date European tour with The Amity Affliction, Sydney’s Endless Heights will bring their expansive, melodic sound and earth-shattering energy to this run of shows. The five-piece released their stellar second album Vicious Pleasure to critical praise in February, led by the tender and emotive single ‘Come A Little Closer‘ and have performed alongside Luca Brasi, Turnover and Basement.

Dynamic trio RedHook round out the bill with their unique blend of rap-rock-electro-pop, drawing upon a diverse array of influences from Grimes to Rage Against The Machine. The group headlined the first-ever heavy music showcase at Australian Music Week 2018 and opened the inaugural Good Things Festival in Sydney this past weekend, all following the release of their most recent anthemic single ‘Turn Up The Stereotype‘.

After three back-to-back sold out Australian tours, the band return home for their biggest headline shows yet in 2019 before returning to the US festival circuit to perform at Sonic Temple, Welcome to Rockville and Epicenter – one of only two Australian bands sharing the bill with revered artists including Foo Fighters, Korn, The Prodigy and more.

Closing out a year of widespread success, Hands Like Houses’ mammoth track ‘Monster’ has exceeded2.2 million Spotify streams and 450,000 YouTube plays, being picked up as the WWE Super Show-Down official theme song and broadcast to over 70,000 wrestling fans at the MCG in October. The track was run in a major sync on FOX8 for the network’s DC universe, and has been spotlighted in Amazon Music’s ‘Best of Rock 2018’ list. With a multitude of national radio airplay behind the track, the band also went on to take out the highly-coveted triple j Feature Album for -Anon which was praised across the board, including Kerrang! calling the album “a bold step into the unknown… their play for the big leagues.”

Hailing from Canberra, five-piece Hands Like Houses – Trenton Woodley (vocals), Alexander Pearson (guitar), Joel Tyrrell (bass), Matt Cooper (guitar), Matthew Parkitny (drums) – have spent the past decade thrilling audiences with their dynamic performances, sharing arena stages with heavyweights such asBring Me The Horizon and A Day To Remember at home, to performing internationally alongside legendary acts including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice Cooper and Disturbed on Download Festivaland Rock on the Range to name a few. Pip Blom shares new video for ‘The Shed’

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR PIP BLOM

‘Song You Need To Know: Pip Blom, ‘Come Home‘
Rolling Stone

“…a perfect millennial anthem.”
NPR

“Guitars! Indie rock band Pip Blom does not disappoint with their newest single “Come Home,” with lead singer Blom’s vocals amplifying the moody yet up-beat track.”
NYLON

“A potent set of lo-fi, ’90s-influenced rock with angst-fueled lyrics and addictive song hooks.”
KEXP

“Pip is producing quality, unique and enigmatic music way beyond her years.”
BBC Radio 6 Music

“Pip Blom Is Ready to Join the Ranks of 2018’s Rising Guitar Acts”
Noisey

“‘Amsterdam newcomers Pip Blom – are one of the country’s frontrunners, their Courtney Barnett-esque slacker-garage rock hybrid noisy in the best way.’”
DIY MAG

“Another stellar single from the young musician who continues to grow as an artist.”
Indie Shuffle

“Its lead single, ‘Pussycat,’ boasts a bothered tone and fiery guitars. On ‘Come Home,’ that intensity is laser-focused in frontwoman Pip Blom’s steady, creeping vocals.”
Stereogum

Amsterdam’s rising act PIP BLOM today shares her new video for ‘The Shed’. Directed by Kris Rimmer, the track is taken off her recently released Paycheck EP out now via London label Nice Swan Records.

‘The Shed’ caps off what has been a busy year for Pip Blom who kicked off her 2018 with a collision of guitars in the attitude-laden ‘Pussycat’ that landed her a spot on the BBC 6 Music’s A-list – the second time a Pip Blom single did so this year. She followed on with the release of her celebrated Paycheck EP featuring lead single ‘Come Home‘ which saw spot rotation on triple j and acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, DIY Mag, NPR, Noisey and more. The year was rounded out but the bands debut UK headline tour (including a sold-out Lexington show) and supports alongside The Breeders, Franz Ferdinand and Garbage – all big feats for someone in their first year in music.

The Paycheck EP is out now on Nice Swan Records.

RICHMOND WELCOMES HARLOW – A NEW EXPANSIVE PUB, GARDEN BAR AND BASEMENT

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

Harlow, Richmond’s flavour-packed, good-times charged pub is now open. Bringing new life to what was the old Great Britain Hotel, the 300pax Church Street property has been reborn as an all-occasions destination, with a spacious outdoor courtyard, basement and balcony dining.

Suited to all ages, occasions and tastes, Harlow offers a variety of versatile spaces and experiences within the new-look pub. Guests can start at the ground floor bar and dining area, before stepping out into the sprawling sun-drenched courtyard, complete with a separate entrance for those who want to bring along their four-legged friends. When the sun goes down, they can retreat to the neon-lit basement bar, with low booth seating and a dimly lit metal mesh bottle display. Music remains at the heart of the venue, with the soundtrack as diverse as the venue itself.

Harlow’s love of music carries through to the menu, full of pub classics with modern twists and vibrant flavours. Executive Chef Telina Menzies has designed a menu that can be experienced the same way people would a gig. Just like their stage counterpart, the opener starts the feast off in style – like fried chicken, with pickled watermelon and blue cheese mayo or cheeseburger empanadas with special sauce. For the support act, guests can tuck into the H-low cheeseburger, complete with cheese, pickles, Harlow’s burger sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion. As a headliner, Harlow is serving classic pub favourites including the spicy meatball melt with smoked mozza, basil and crisps; the prawn roll, served with a side of salt and vinegar chips; and the ‘snack pack’ kebab, a decadent wrap made with lamb, chips, garlic yoghurt, chilli sauce and cheese. There is no party quite like the after party, so to top off the meal, Ha serves up mini gin and juice pops, made with gin, tonic, orange bitters, rosemary and chocolate, and the BIG Mess, Harlow’s take on the classic meringue dessert. Large groups are encouraged to BBQ the Harlow way with a pre-paid BBQ, where the chef slings proteins on the grills to a backdrop of 80s and 90s bangers on the decks.

Sitting alongside an extensive list of wines and beers, Harlow’s Mark Proctor has designed a cocktail list broken down into three different themes – Hip Hop, Pop and Heavy Metal. Much like their music counterpart, these cocktails have been inspired by the songs and artists of each genre, with Hip Hop’s Gin N Juice cocktail featuring Four Pillars gin, elderflower and cranberry juice, Pop’s California Girls with citrus vodka, peach liqueur, pinto gris, orange juice and egg white and Heavy Metal’s Voodoo People cocktail, with white rum, spiced rum, orgeat and fruit juice.

“Harlow is all about having a great time, just like your mate’s place you never want to leave” says Ben Hehir, Harlow’s manager. “We want Harlow to be the place where people can pop in for a casual lunch on a Saturday afternoon and then end up dancing the night away. Come back in on the Sunday with the fam and do it all over again”.

Harlow is open throughout the Christmas season, except for Christmas Day. Harlow will also be open for walk ins on New Year’s Eve, with free entry for all guests. Those wanting to recover and start off the new year in typical Aussie fashion, Harlow is hosting a Backyard BBQ recovery session on New Year’s Day, opening at 12pm.

Concrete Surfers

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae
What is your name and role within Concrete Surfers?

Hey! I’m Jovi and I sing and play guitar.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
We are currently based in Brisbane and we wouldn’t wanna be anywhere else! Brisbane has such a close knit music community where it’s so easy to make friends and be around nice, likeminded people. We are pretty lucky in this little city that everyone in the music industry here is so supportive of each other and get really psyched when they sell out a show, or go on a big tour and it’s just really really nice.

How did the band start?

Back in high school Trent, Jamie and I used to play in another band just playing covers, but it didn’t really work out with our singer at the time so we parted ways but decided that we still wanted to play music together so the three of us formed as a 3-piece and I thought that I would just give singing a go haha. Now Sean is in the band too as a guitar player and it just feels nice and complete! We wouldn’t want to have it any other way.

You’ve had a rad two years with shows playing bands like Good Doogs, White Blanks, Pist Idiots, Royal Blood, Ruby Fields, The Pretty Littles, how has your live show progressed since you started out?

When we fist started we were playing pretty small clubs and bars in the out-skirts of Fortitude valley and I guess we just got added to better lineups as time moved on! Releasing music definitely helped keep the ball rolling too. I guess just playing together a lot live has helped us progress and now we don’t even really have to think about what we are doing on stage. We can just have fun and make the most of it!

You’ve also featured on awesome lineups; the Bigsound Pre Party and Against the Grain festival with bands City Calm Down, Horror My Friend, Good Boy, Tiny Little Houses and Sweater Curse to name a few! How do your shows usually come about and what do you most enjoy about playing live?

Thanks! We are so lucky in Brisbane that everyone knows each other pretty well, so with lineups like Against the Grain it’s pretty much playing with bands we have played with before so it’s super friendly and fun. I think the best part about playing live is being able to look at the four of us on stage and see that we are all just having so much fun and it’s probably the best feeling for me personally. What makes that even better is looking out to the crowd and seeing everyone smiling and singing along with us; It feels pretty good knowing that our music can make so many people happy.

I hear that you are currently finalising your 2nd EP for Release in February/March with an accompanying tour, what has influenced the sound and songwriting for the EP?

The biggest thing sound wise for this EP is the songs have turned out to be quite a bit heavier both sonically and from a lyrical point of view from our previous releases. I think shedding light on issues like mental illness and politics has been a big focal point of my writing in the past year or so and that can definitely be heard in these songs.

Where have you been recording?

We recorded the EP at swan pond studios on a farm in Boonah which is about an hour away from Brisbane. Our friend Ali Richardson engineered the whole thing over 3 days. The best part about being out there was that if things were becoming tense in the Studio we could just take a walk around the paddocks or kick a footy around and I think this helped us produce a better end product.

What programs/equipment have you been using throughout the recording process?

Um in terms of instrumentation we tried to use as much of the gear we use live so it’s easier to recapture the sound when we play the songs live. Pretty much just fender guitars and amps and a whole bunch of overdrive and fuzz pedals. Trent actually used a Hofner violin bass which was different but really worked within the mix. We recorded using Protools and tried to keep it fairly simple.

Your Single Miscommunication just hit 70,000 plays on Spotify 1 year after its release! What do you attribute to the success of this track?

Yeah we are all really stoked on that! I think that song has been so successful because it has lyrics that everyone can relate to and combined with a few catchy chord progressions it turned out to be a song that we love playing too.

What do you like to do away from music?

Lately I’ve been getting back into skating which has been really good as a physical outlet and a way of clearing my head, other than that we just like hanging out really hahaha, I sometimes like to shoot film photography when I have the time which is also another good creative outlet. Trent’s pretty passionate about reptiles so he finds himself catching and releasing different lizards in his backyard.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Lately I’ve been really digging bands like Shame, Beach Fossils, IDLES, some old hip-hop, and doom bands Conan and Bong-Ripper.

What’s planned for 2019?

Lots and lots of touring next year! Hoping to head down the east coast as much as we can next year and write some more music.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My personal favourite food would have to either be pasta, ramen or pizza! And as far as hanging out, our favourite place is the Warehouse where we rehearse and write our music.

THE WOMBATS RELEASE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR ‘OCEANS’

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

How do you shoot a music video in the middle of a jam packed Australian tour?

With a song named Oceans, simply drop front man Murph into the ocean to shoot a one take video 30 minutes before soundcheck on St. Kilda Beach, Melbourne, and let the rest of the magic happen in post.

Produced by Be-Hookd Digital and directed by Silas Armstrong, the band’s social team in the UK came up with the simple idea in a label meeting. Six weeks later armed with a GoPro, bluetooth waterproof speaker and a phone, they had convinced Murph to brave the cold sea with nothing but a camera man, tour manager and his swimming trunks.

Taking inspiration from the lyrics of Oceans, the animations were added based on Murph’s improvised reactions, bringing to life his thoughts and fears in the form of cartoon shark fins and rattle snakes, giving the fans a reason to watch the new video for Oceans over and over again.

While in Australia the band also recorded a very special Christmas themed Like A Version for tripe j, putting their own spin on the timeless Bing Crosby classic White Christmas.

Melbourne’s Skydeck sign with Dinosaur City Records; share debut single ‘Live Bait’

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

“[Live Bait is] a tense, sparse track built mostly around synth and bass that snaps into a higher gear as Kearton yelps through the chorus.” – Noisey

Best of the Week (Playlist) – Apple Music

Melbourne duo Skydeck today share their debut single, ‘Live Bait’, and announce their signing to Dinosaur City Records and Burger Records (USA).

Named after the monumental skyscraper that frames Melbourne’s reddening sky, Skydeck is good friends and long-term housemates Dominic Kearton (Pregnancy) and Mitch Clemens (Ciggie Witch). The pair make surreal, anti-capitalist pop that focuses on themes of desire and fear.

Premiering via Noisey right now, Live Bait is the first track from the bands 11-track debut album, Eureka Moment, due March 2019.

Inspired by long hours spend working at a rural pub, Kearton explains to Noisey, “I moved to Castlemaine, in Victoria’s north, and spent seven or eight months working at a really weird out-of-town truck driver pub and I just worked from 11AM until 5PM and basically just sat in the front bar and watched pensioners bet on the horse racing on the TV. It was pretty strange and confronting but I really needed a job so I stuck it out. It’s helped me write a lot of songs and think about Australia a lot as a place, so I guess it was an eye-opening experience.”

Live Bait is out via Dinosaur City Records/Burger Records (USA)now. Buy/stream it on Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp, SoundCloud and more.

Genre bending 10-piece The Northern Folk have come to gatecrash your romantic getaway in their new video for ‘Cold’ + summer festival performances

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

“The vocals shine on this track, perfectly accompanied by the impressive range of instrumentals, which highlight the brilliant songwriting.” – the AU review

“I’m into the duelling narratives on this track and the really lovely playing.” – Dave Ruby Howe, triple j

Melbourne collective, The Northern Folk recently released their captivating new single ‘Cold’ which saw them play to a packed room at their Northcote Social Club single launch last month. Blossoming from melodic calm to chaotic crescendos of clashing cymbals, sing-a-long choruses and playful horns, the powerful track is a grand, impressive and utterly refined taste of The Northern Folk’s forthcoming third album and one of their most soulful slices to date. Now, after an exclusive premiere by the AU review yesterday, the 10-piece folk, pop, rock group are excited to reveal the single’s striking new music video created by acclaimed Director/Producer Mark Day.

Winner of ‘Best Feature Film’ at the Reel Time International Online Film Festival for his 2018 film Age of Imitation, Mark Day and his crew have worked closely with the band to bring to life the concept they had envisioned for ‘Cold’. Starring Michael Nikou and award-winning actor Tanya Alers (‘Best Actress’ Age of Imitation) as well as The Northern Folk themselves, the video is an eerie and artistic representation of human consciousness.

“Cold is about the insecurities that tie us down for fear of the unknown, and the emotional distance they create. Shot in the sparse Riverina landscape, a couple find themselves confronted by the manifestations of their insecurities, and must make the choice to be led by them, or to reject them and take control of what they want to be.” – The Northern Folk

“Working with the band through their original concept, we were aiming to personify the distance created in a relationship when you’ve passed a point of no return. Whether you struggle with conscience, the masked figures who tell you to move forward, or succumb to the inevitability of change, you’ll find yourself at the same ending, alternately dumbfounded or at peace.” – Mark Day, Director

After playing around town to full rooms at The Evelyn, The Gasometer, and The Northcote Social Club, as well as supporting The East Pointers from Canada, The Northern Folk are excited to take on a run of festival performances this summer. Complete with bellowing horns, energetic stage presence and dynamic band camaraderie like no other, a Northern Folk live show is an all-encompassing affair. Having appeared on such festival lineups as St Kilda Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Bello Winter Music, and the National Folk Festival in 2018, The Northern Folk are thrilled to keep the festive celebrations rolling into the New Year with their upcoming festival performances.

Don’t miss your chance to catch them at a town near you, and remember to pack your stomping boots!

Lanisa Dawn

by the partae December 13, 2018
written by the partae

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I live in Montreal and we definitely have a vibrant music scene here! We are the home to many poets, artists, dreamers that’s for sure :). There’s a plethora of restaurants, bars, and clubs that host open mics & live bands, big underground music scene, as well as festivals in practically every genre: the iconic jazz festival, Osheaga, Heavy Montreal for all the metalheads, POP Montreal celebrates many emerging acts from all over the world, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for classical music. Party goers may get enjoy Piknic Electronik in the summer and Igloofest in the winter if they love electronic techno music. We have a massive french music festival called Les FrancoFolies. The list could go on and on – SO much happening here!

When and how did you first get involved in acting?

My first experience acting was at the age of 11 when I was given the lead role as a rabbit in the school’s theatre production of The Velveteen Rabbit. I got that role either out of pure talent, or most likely was type-cast since at the time my two front teeth stuck way out & I just looked perfect for the part 😉 (yay for braces in my future!). After high school, I studied acting at the DOME – Professional Theatre Program at Dawson College here in Montreal. I completed two out of the three years, then left to study something else because at the time I felt societal pressure to pursue a “normal” career. I only got back into acting years later when I attended the Summer Conservatory Program at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Training in NYC for a summer was one of the most enriching artistic experiences of my life! Fast forward, after being involved in the musical theatre scene in Montreal, I was then selected for a one year contract as a “Resident Actress” for a theatre company based in Hong Kong. Right after the contract was complete, I was cast in my first feature film which shot on location for a little over a month in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Haven’t stopped since and it’s been quite the adventure…the journey continues and never stops!

How has your acting career developed since you first started?

Unfortunately the film I did in Malaysia never saw the light of day due to post production issues and an investor had pulled out of the project. However, it was a great experience because it was my first time on a film set and it’s what got me my agent when I returned back home. Since having representation in the last couple years, I booked a national commercial which got me into the actor’s union ACTRA (equivalent to SAG-AFTRA in the states, but the Canadian version). I was also fortunate to work on a short film that was selected for screening at TIFF, an actor role in the CBC TV series The Detectives, recurring principal roles on two award nominated french web-series. I also had a major role in a horror film which is supposed to come out eventually. The investor was a new media digital platform called Blackpills…James Franco is also making content for this media space, so pretty cool! The last project I worked on was a feature film called Gut Instinct starring Josh Hartnett (my crush when I was a teen)! I had gone in to audition for a major role for that one, but didn’t get the part. I ended up being offered a small role in the production & it’s always amazing to be on a set and inspired by the whole cast and crew surrounding you:). I’ve been having a great time, and continue to develop myself as an artist!

How and why did you first start playing music?

Singing was a natural talent for me as a kid. My mom is a singer and we used to sing together by the piano when I was really young, so those memories are very dear to me. Adults would always tell me that I had a unique voice, and they would be surprised when this little girl would open her mouth to sing, and a deep full voice would come out. My vocal range for a woman is quite deep and was pretty much the same tone when I was a kid (you could say I grew into my voice haha) so it made even more of an impact coming from a small human LOL. When I started acting, I combined the two and was heavily into musical theatre, but then I found myself writing lyrics and humming melodies in the last few years, so I thought hey why not bring these words off paper and just create create create! So that’s what I’ve been doing. 🙂

Your single ‘Witness’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?

Witness was the first song I ever wrote so it was a completely new artistic process for me. The bottom line was that I wanted to tell a story, and a story that people could relate to. The songwriting for this track was influenced by the feeling of inspiration, motivation and conquering your insecurities and fears. It’s not always easy, even for me, because I overthink a lot and feel things very deeply… but that is what WITNESS stands for – aim to be a witness to those negative times, reflect on it, but don‘t allow it to consume you. The human mind is complex and much stronger than we think and we have the power to control it. Life is beautiful! For sound, we went for a melodic tone, piano, lots of harmonies on the chorus, electronic pop elements, and of course because the song starts off as more of a slow ballad, we went for that uptempo pop chorus with a hook so it can get stuck in your head;).

Where and when did you record?

I recorded this song about a year ago or maybe more at a studio in Montreal, with a production team called “The Lost Boys”. I’ve been working on music with them since then. Witness was put aside for a little while after we recorded it, because I wasn’t sure what I’d release first. I was happy just going through the process of creating material, until finally I got antsy and wanted to make my debut. I’m happy I went with this track as the first. The reaction and feedback has been very humbling and positive!

How do you usually go about writing music?

I prefer collaborating with people because I believe as a team you can be way stronger. So far, anything I’ve written myself came to me in a few different ways: either I just get a jolt of inspiration out of nowhere and get myself into a state of conscious flow where I’m writing down whatever is in my head. Usually have a melody in mind as well, so that after I can structure it accordingly. Or a lot of times, I’m walking down the street and a phrase with a melody will pop into my head, so I’ll record it into my phone really quickly and develop it later. The easiest for me, is when an instrumental track is already made. I can easily get inspired through the music alone and then create lyrics and melody over that. I think a process which is very organic and probably the most fun though, is when you’re jamming with a bunch of your musical friends in a dark room, just singing absolute nonsense until you come up with something awesome:). I need to do more of that!

Please tell us how the concept for the ‘Witness’ video came about?

It took some time with the production team to come up with the concept, but we absolutely knew we wanted the video to bring the song to life and tell a story that could affect people. We ended up using the concept of a young girl losing her parents and then growing up and finding peace. As a child we are at our most innocent and purest state, not yet jaded by the outside world, and so we wanted to show that even when the most negative things happen to any of us (no matter what it may be), as we grow we must move forward and be resilient, find our inner peace and happiness. You meet people who have gone through so much, and yet they are extraordinary! It’s truly inspiring. So we wanted to touch on that and felt that concept would make the biggest impact.

Where and when did the filming take place?

The filming for the video took place last winter! Fun Fact: The video was shot in a vintage home in Old Montreal that used to belong to the Papineau family who are big part of Quebec’s history. Although previously inhabited by citizens in the last few years, it’s now been repossessed by the City of Montreal to preserve its heritage, and this happened shortly after the owner let us shoot there!

Who did you work with?

For the video I worked with a production team called Rubicon Pictures & Media, who have collaborated with many of Montreal’s artists & they are such a fantastic team. Extremely professional and vibrant! I also worked with director Alberto D’Onofrio, who cast Florence (the little girl in the video), and I can honestly say the performances from both myself and Florence would not have been the same without him. The whole team was undeniably passionate. It was a great shoot!

What do you like to do away from music?

It’s pretty ironic that I’m saying this, because I have a huge fear of planes and yet I love traveling ha! One day I’d love to be able to take off for a good few months and travel all over. Go on adventures and discover more of the world. I’m fortunate to have been able to travel a lot already… but that’s what makes me crave seeing even more!:)

I’m also into hitting the slopes skiing in winter, I enjoy hiking and being outdoors in the summer, boating, waterskiing. I like going out, social events, networking with my peers, eating at good restaurants, delicious food, wine, etc.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Ohhh boy, that is probably the toughest question for me of this entire interview because I listen to Spotify and my playlists are a mashup of so many different artists and styles. I can tell you recently I was introduced to Khalid and Post Malone, and I’m into that. Through listening to their music I also discovered H.E.R, love her deep vocals and music production is on fire. For the less mainstream stuff, I listen to Banks, FKA Twigs (her voice & style is crazy good), Howling, Bob Moses, Joy Williams – she’s an amazing folky singer, LOVE Labrinth he was my favourite for a while. As for the mainstream popular stuff: I’ve always loved the Weeknd, Bruno Mars (great performer!), Adele, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Lana Del Rey… been into a few of Dua Lipa’s songs for fun easy listening recently, Alessia Cara, Daniel Caesar. I also listen to artists of deep house, techno, jazz, classical, rock & roll, old school tunes….. it really just depends on my mood, but everyday I’m listening to something different.

Plans for 2019?

Lots of plans! I finally have enough material for a solid acting demo reel, so I’ll be putting that together for the new year and aiming at getting more auditions and roles. I’ve also continued to work on new music, so there will be a lot more singles rolling out throughout the year. I’ve started conceptualizing my own short film ideas and I’d like to write those scripts and get into creating my own work. I think the best thing an artist can do for themselves is create their own opportunities, instead of sitting around and waiting for the phone to ring.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Favourite food is sushi…but has to be good sushi, not like the fast food kind. Fave hangout spot…hmm… recently went for a Jam Night at Rosewood (it’s a restaurant/bar in the old port of Montreal that hosts different music nights, open mics for singers and bands first Tuesday of every month). My friends own the place, so I always know people there and it’s a good time! Other favourite place would have to be at home in bed, with my cats…haha. I can’t deny that! 😉

Please tell us how you became involved in Music Victoria and what you find most challenging and rewarding about your role:

I was employed by Music Victoria in November 2016 to run, what was then a newly created program called Live Music Professionals. Live Music Professionals is coming into its third year in 2019 and basically, it’s a free business coaching program for live music venues (band bookers, venue owners, venue managers) and independent promoters. Cultivate is a brand new program which is running in 2019 for the first time ever and I’m really excited about it! It’s somewhat similar to Live Music Professionals however it’s specifically aimed at those who identify as women and who are in leadership or management roles in the Victorian music industry. To be honest I can’t say I find anything really challenging in my project management role at Music Victoria but there’s so much that I find rewarding. I certainly don’t take working in music, and for an amazing organisation like Music Victoria, for granted; and then to be able to run programs that upskill people and help them realise their full potential while also helping them build support networks is definitely a highlight. Being in a position where I can help people on their business or leadership journey is just the best thing ever!

Music Victoria in partnership with the Vic Government has announced a new leadership program ‘Cultivate’ that is aimed at mid-career and established women in the Vic music industry who wish to wish to further their leadership and management skills, how and why was the Cultivate program created?

In April 2015 Music Victoria conducted a survey titled ‘Women in the Victorian Contemporary Music Industry’. There were over 300 respondents and many key themes were identified as barriers for women working in the contemporary Victorian music industry. Even though it’s taken a few years to get a project like Cultivate in action,  it’s a great a result and massive step in the right direction of having a positive impact on some of the key issues addressed in that survey.

A quote from the report that’s quite relevant to the roll-out of this project is: “A brief examination of the number of men and women in senior positions (i.e. executive roles or board members) of selected industry organisations supports the perception that the music industry is a ‘boys club’ (see Appendix B). Only half of the organisations have 50% or more females in senior positions and several organisations have no females in senior roles. Of all the senior positions available across these organisations, only 28% are held by women. However, women are overrepresented in non-senior positions holding 58% of staff positions. These crude statistics show that like many other industries, women in the music industry do not have equal representation in the key decision making roles and face a ‘glass ceiling’.”

You can read the full report here: http://www.musicvictoria.com.au/assets/Women%20in%20the%20Victorian%20Contemporary%20Music%20Industry.pdf

Music Victoria would like to see more women within the music industry progressing on their leadership journey and we hope that a program like Cultivate will promote this.

Will this be an ongoing program?

At this stage, we only have funding through for one year but hopefully, we’ll be able to demonstrate the need for future funding and be able to run it more than just once!

Why have you chosen to target women only for the Cultivate program?

The program is funded by the Office for Women which is why we’re targeting women and those who identify as women on this project.

How many participants will be selected for the Cultivate program?

Spots are super limited for the program and we’ll only be accepting five people into the program as it’s a pilot program.

What do you hope to be achieved in the Cultivate program?

I hope that we can connect a group of women to amazing mentors who will be able to provide the support our participants need to aid them in progressing on a successful journey into higher leadership and management roles. I’d love to see more women in senior management roles in the music industry and I believe that we can do this!

What does 2019 hold for the Cultivate program?

2019 is when everything will roll out for the program. Once participants have been selected by our reference group we’ll launch the program with a full day of mentoring activities followed by masterclasses and then our participants will be involved in tailored leadership coaching or programs.

THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF
CHRISTMAS DAY SPECIAL

2019 FESTIVAL HEADLINERS
RAMBLIN’ MAN – JULY 19th

Britain’s favourite festive rock stars The Darkness are jingling their bells again, with a live version of their hit single ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End)’, recorded at their headline show at Hammersmith Apollo last year.

Introducing the release with his Christmas message to all Justin Hawkins says, “As Santa prepares to empty his sack into our collective Christmas chimney, and young faces smeared with festive brandy butter gaze up expectantly, every day is a fun-filled festive frolic of presents and pies. Much as you will enjoy your turkey leftovers on Boxing Day, we are serving up Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End) again, this time in a tasty live sauce. Hooray, eh? A rocking good Christmas to one and all!”

The announcement comes as the band have been confirmed to perform their Yuletide hit in the most famous tent on television for The Great British Bake Off Christmas Special on Christmas Day.

This gift to the nation wraps up the huge success The Darkness have celebrated with the release of their 2017 Top 10 studio album Pinewood Smile, which received widespread critical acclaim across the board, and 2018’s Live At Hammersmith extravaganza, which features ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End)’.

Looking to the year ahead, 2019 is already providing tantalising Darkness delights. Not only have they been announced to headline the opening day of Ramblin’ Man Fair, Maidstone on July 19th, but they are entering the studio with songs aplenty to start work on their forthcoming sixth studio album. Stay tuned for further announcements to come.

Merry Christmas Everybody!

Following the news that due to popular demand the London date of their February tour has just been upgraded to a venue twice the size – Heaven in Charing Cross – Massachusetts duo, BOY HARSHER have shared a second track from their forthcoming new album.

The second single to be taken from the LP ‘Careful’, which will be released on February 1st via their own imprintNude Club Records, is ‘Fate’ – an icy-cool track, combining a spiky synth refrain with club beats, washes of ethereal haze and vocalist Jae Matthews’ distinctive smoky vocals.

“This song is about how there’s no amount of running that will prevent you from your life” they explain. “You are raw and beat-down, yet you will continue to behave the same way – Fate is your own trouble, a magnetic force that’s stuck on you forever.” The suitably unnerving video was directed and produced by Bryan M. Ferguso.

Boy Harsher began through an urgent need to produce and consume. In the winter of 2014, Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller started to experiment with sound, video and text; the advent of Boy Harsher. Born out of this tumultuous relationship in swampy Georgia, their first EP ‘Lesser Man’ (various pressings 2014 – 2018, Soft Science/Night People/Aufnahme + Wiedergabe/Nude Club) is sexy as it is sulking. ‘Lesser Man’ determined their morose pop sound. In their second release, the full length ‘Yr Body is Nothing’ (various pressings 2016 – 2018, DKA Records/Nude Club) Matthews and Muller took that darkness and ran with it. Both releases reflect the fervor present in their adolescent lust and anger. Yet before Matthews and Muller recorded any songs, their chaos made the project vulnerable and invariably lead to momentary destruction. In what was at the time believed to be their last performance, Matthews had “careful” tattooed across her back whilst Muller fried the speakers. A lit candle was thrown. They were not on speaking terms.

At that time “Careful” was meant as a warning: the cautionary understanding of love. The duo felt as though they were disappearing within one another. But, if Boy Harsher’s first two releases narrated the pain and desperation that follows after something goes awry, then this LP, ‘Careful’, describes what loves gives you: fear and joy, tenderness and pain. For Boy Harsher, ‘Careful’ attempts to detail the enveloping trauma of loss combined with the fantasy of escape.

Matthews and Muller certainly made amends since that fateful live tattooing, however both still have complex relationships to attachments. In 2017 Matthews’ mother was diagnosed with dementia and as the symptoms began to take hold the essence of “careful” became relevant in a new way. Matthews’ relationship with her parents has always been complicated: her father passed away when she was a teenager and her mother is an alcoholic, consistently unpredictable with affection and stability. The loss of her father was extreme, yet acute, whereas the persistent sadness of losing her mother (the memories that defined their relationship) is a slow, chronic suffering. The trauma of losing someone is almost in tandem to Matthews’ understanding of love. It is with these intensely personal struggles Matthews and Muller began developing their new album.

With ‘Careful’, Boy Harsher use the medium of minimal electronics to create a compelling narrative of a deteriorating family and the reaction to run away from it. The record plots its time between songs that study the trauma embedded within loss, and the compulsion to flee.

The band expands upon the fine-tuned production developed in their last EP ‘Country Girl’ (2017, Ascetic House), but with plenty of nods to the fast tempo and grittiness of ‘Lesser Man’. Matthews and Muller attribute the evolution of their sound to the extensive touring they completed in the last few years. They sold out their debut UK shows at the end of 2017 and embarked on two US and two EU tours this past year, where audiences recognize their set as a faster, harder version of their recorded material.

Album download! Fredfades & Jawn Rice – “Jacuzzi Boyz” (Deep House)

by the partae December 13, 2018
written by the partae

+ debut album ‘Jacuzzi Boyz’ via Mutual Intentions on 18th January 2019

“An enticing first taste from what could prove to be a strong start to 2019 for the pair” – Complex Magazine

Having been ensconced in the studio recording tracks for their debut album ‘Jacuzzi Boyz’ due 2019 via Mutual Intentions, Norwegian leftfield electronic DJ / producers Fredfades and Jawn Rice will preempt its release with a brand new track ‘Tonight’ featuring Lucid Paradise.

Fredfades details the track: “’Tonight’ is my personal favourite cut from the project. It’s a track I hope reflects our love for the true sound of quality soulful deep house. For me, this is like a personal tribute to pioneers of deep house that came out of New York, Jersey, Detroit and Chicago. In the beginning this was a deep house groove I made and sent to Jawn for him to work with. He did a version first, and after that we worked on it together with contributions from both a bass player and Lucid Paradise, which resulted in a slow evolution towards modern funk. This wasn’t what I wanted it to be in the beginning, so me and Jawn went to my studio to scrap the electric guitar bass, re-record the synth bass, lay down more keys, really turning the drums away from boogie funk and back into a house thing again. Then we rearranged both the instrumental and the vocals. I believe this is version six or seven of this song, and all the different versions really sound very different. Bang it real loud and enjoy the groove part that plays for the last three minutes of the song”.

Hailing from Oslo and Lillehammer in Norway, Fredfades and Jawn Rice have been collaborating on music for over ten years in different shapes and forms. They bonded immediately when they both bought their first SP1200’s back in 2007, but it wasn’t until recently they decided to collaborate on a full project.

The project is deeply rooted in traditional genres such as house and electronic music, but with their super jazzy signature touches. The project features vocalists such as Lucid Paradise, Stimulator Jones and Dreamcast who all contributes with soulful RNB oriented vocals. With Jawn Rice’s “Highlights” and Fredfades’ “Warmth” LP’s well received in 2017, this is guaranteed to be one of the hottest house records of 2019.

Editors notes:
Fredfades is a Norwegian producer, DJ, and artist. As a real heavyweight and widely known collector of Jazz, Boogie, Disco and Modern Soul records, Fred has been traveling all over Europe the past two years sharing stages with house names such as Jeremy Underground, Robert Owens, Byron The Aquarius and Hugo LX. He has done radio mixes for Motor City Drum Ensemble, NTS Radio, Worldwide FM, Rinse FM and Dublab while touring. Before this, Fred made a name and platform for himself in indie hiphop circles worldwide, with his solo debut album Warmth (2017) that featured artists such as Mndsgn, Ivan Ave, Nanna B, Chester Watson & MED. Same year, he also produced the most streamed songs on Ivan Ave’s “Every Eye” LP (Jakarta Records, 2017) and Charlotte Dos Santos’ “Cleo” LP (Fresh Selects, 2017). Fredfades & Charlotte Dos Santos was also featured on the Stones Throw compilation “Sofie’s S.O.S. Tape”. Besides being a musician, Fred manages the Oslo-based record label Mutual Intentions, which did the first ever Norwegian Boiler Room show in 2015.

Jawn Rice is a fresh addition to the house-scene. He released his house debut “Highlights” in the winter of 2017, and it instantly got added to the list of 2017’s best releases by some of the biggest Norwegian newspapers and magazines. He first made his name known as a part of the trio Oslo SP Ensemble where he made Hip-Hop beats together with Fredfades and Deckdaddy. They did their cult SP1200 beat tapes and also produced Ivan Ave’s first vinyl EP. After a while, Jawn took a break from the whole Hip- Hop culture to explore new genres of music. He discovered house music, and went to festivals which led him to rapidly explore a bunch of progressive genres. Jawn’s deep house is reminiscent of your favorite boogie and jazz-funk jams, yet remains forward leaning with his hyper modern production style. His subtle use of samples, vibrant keyboard soundscapes and vivid drum programming is a blueprint for upcoming releases by the aspiring producer.

Ostgut Ton announces Efdemin album ‘New Atlantis’ – out February 15

by the partae December 13, 2018
written by the partae

Oh, lovely appearance of death, No sight upon earth is so fair; Not all the gay pageants that breathe, Can with a dead body compare.

– Charles Wesley, A Funeral Hymn for a Believer, 1780

So begins New Atlantis, the fourth full-length album by longtime Berghain resident Efdemin aka Phillip Sollmann. The words, sung by 60s California art icon William T. Wiley and embedded in glowing drone swells, set an otherworldly tone for Sollmann’s first solo release on Ostgut Ton.

Over eight tracks, New Atlantis oscillates between fast, kaleidoscopic techno, multilayered drones and acoustic instrumentation, fusing for the first time Sollmann’s deep dancefloor productions as Efdemin with his sound art and experimental music projects. The latter include 2017’s Harry Partch- inspired Monophonie performance and 2018’s Panama / Suez EP with Oren Ambarchi and Konrad Sprenger.

Long drawn to utopian musical traditions, Sollmann took inspiration for New Atlantis from Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name, which describes a fictional island devoted to social progress through the synthesis of art, science, technology and fashion. In the story, Bacon imagines futuristic ‘sound houses’, which contain musical instruments capable of recreating the entirety of the sounds of the universe; a 400-year-old prophesy of today’s digital sonic reality.

Through Sollmann’s lens, Bacon’s vision ebbs and flows over 50 minutes in varying speeds and colors, emerging as a tapestry of different utopian musical traditions – through billowing synth lines, early Detroit techno, resonant wooden percussion, trance, droning organs, dulcimer, electric guitars, hurdy-gurdy, just intonation, poetry, hymns and murmuring voices. Sometimes they merge into epic, rhythmic journeys like the 14-minute long title track; other times they appear as a briefly open sound portal (“Temple”), or in the forlorn human voice on “Oh, Lovely Appearance Of Death”, calling to be freed from jail of the human body and pass into the afterlife.

Like previous Efdemin albums on Dial, New Atlantis veers off the techno path to explore other musical territory. Here however, Sollmann occasionally abandons the club entirely, returning only to push its boundaries with other instruments, mythologies and psychedelic story telling.

No Mono share their cover of ‘Unchained Melody’

by the partae December 13, 2018
written by the partae

First performing the Alex North and Hy Zaretcover original at the band’s Sydney Opera House album launch for VIVID Live, and again at this year’s Splendour In The Grass, the cover had an immediate reaction with fans and was desperately in want of a recording. Not since The Righteous Brothers covered ‘Unchained Melody‘ has there been a more powerful interpretation.

Tom Snowdon recalls their first performance of the song – “We first performed the song at the Opera House for Vivid Live. As soon as those first notes come out to form the verse melody, the audience broke into song with us. It’s magic like that, this song, it means a lot to so many people.”

He continues, “When we play it live there’s a lot of space between notes – lots of room to let the words, notes and vocals linger. We wanted to capture this in the studio recording – capture it as we perform it.”

Recorded at BellBird, the creative home of Melbourne-based label Pieater, and filmed on Super 8 at thesold out headline show at the Corner Hotel during No Mono’s national tour for Islands part 1, now at last fans will forever have a memento of this transcendental, stripped version with Tom Snowdon’s unforgettable vocal performance.

‘Unchained Melody’ by No Mono is out now via Pieater, buy/stream it here.

UPCOMING LIVE DATES
Sat March 2 – Yours & Owls Festival – Wollongong
Sun March 9 – PANAMA Festival – Tasmania
Sat April 27 – Bendigo Autumn Music Festival – Bendigo
