GORDI ANNOUNCES OUR TWO SKINS ALBUM + SHARES NEW SONG AND VIDEO FOR ‘AEROPLANE BATHROOM’

Our Two Skins album released June 19
New song ‘Aeroplane Bathroom’ out today with video shot in Bangkok
Album taps into feelings of isolation and identity. Recorded with Bon Iver’s production team at Sophie’s family farm in Canowindra
Touring the US with Of Monsters And Men late 2020

“Gordi is her own formidable talent” – NPR Music

Late last month, Sydney-via-Canowindra musician Gordi – also known as Sophie Payten – unveiled her poignant new single, ‘Sandwiches’. Today, Liberation Records is proud to share the news of an album release for Gordi, along with another taste of the record in ‘Aeroplane Bathroom’. The song (also the album opener) is accompanied by Gordi’s most stunning video released to date, which conveys the isolation and crippling anxiety that the album explores.

Our Two Skins will be released on June 19 via Liberation Records (Jagjaguwar internationally).

The writing of the album began after a nervous breakdown while pacing around an Etihad flight from Australia to Europe in late 2017.  Having finally completed her medical exams after years of painstaking study, and against the backdrop of Australia’s marriage equality vote, Sophie was grappling with a new truth in her identity. That internal struggle, which was compounded by her Catholic upbringing, led to an isolated internal state.  It was a turbulent, unsettled and isolating period. Our Two Skins chronicles this intense chapter of Gordi’s life, as she renegotiated who she was and how she fit into the world.

This stark sense of isolation and upheaval permeates the album and comes to the fore on ‘Aeroplane Bathroom’, which was penned in 20 anxious minutes whilst pacing around the stern of an Etihad flight from Australia to Europe.

“I wrote ‘Aeroplane Bathroom’ sitting in a window seat on a long haul flight. The people next to me were asleep and I was alone with my thoughts. I had that sensation of being trapped so I climbed over the other passengers and tried to escape to the bathroom.”
“The song is about feeling isolated. It comes at a very strange time now given we’re all locking ourselves in our homes, ‘socially isolating’ from our normal functional lives. There is no more dehumanising experience than to be cut off from everything you know. It can plunge you into total despair.”
Later, upon arriving home, Gordi recorded a single vocal to an out-of-tune piano. At her parents’ farm in Canowindra, with the help of Bon Iver production duo Chris Messina and Zach Hanson, these original parts were teased out to add soundscape. If you listen closely to the track, you can hear elements from the farm shining through – gates and chains, creaking doors, and a revving Subaru Impreza. This stripped back approach to the recording process was applied to the album in its entirety with all ten tracks laid down at the farm, using minimal equipment.  Eager to bottle the isolation and emptiness she felt during that period of rediscovery, the remoteness of Canowindra proved the right location.

Messina and Hanson flew from Wisconsin to Canowindra with several cases of gear and set up a temporary studio in an old cottage on the farm, dialing into the isolation of the songs’ subject matter; a musical quarantine. There was no phone reception, no wi-fi, and a tin outhouse located in a nearby shearing shed.

“A big theme of the record is: there’s nothing to hide behind. We didn’t have all the bells and whistles. You’re just standing there, with your hands in your pockets going: this is me. This is it. This is all I have.”
‘Aeroplane Bathroom’ arrives complete with a cinematic video from Kasimir Burgess, appropriately filmed across two aeroplane graveyards outside Bangkok. “To get in we had to negotiate with the squatters that live there,” says Gordi. “It was one-million-percent humidity and there were wild dogs and a small crocodile so any fear in my eyes is genuine.”

It follows the release of the album’s first official single ‘Sandwiches’, which was swiftly added to triple j and has seen strong support from both Apple Music and Spotify. Earlier this year, Gordi also released ‘The Cost’, (a standalone track in support of the Australian Bushfire Relief and regional drought efforts), and ‘INDIFFERENT’ (a haunting collaboration with Willaris. K).

Gordi’s previous full-length offering, 2017’s J Award-nominated Reservoir, established her place as an in-demand collaborator, seeing her release music with Troye Sivan, and touring with Sam Smith, Julien Baker and Fleet Foxes. In addition to sold-out local tours, Gordi has performed at Eaux Claires, Big Red Machine, and PEOPLE Festival amongst others, working with a dream list of like-minded artists, including Feist, Damien Rice, Alex Somers and Justin Vernon.

Gordi is due to tour the US with Of Monsters And Men later this year, keep an eye on  www.gordimusic.com for the full run of dates. Australian and further international tour dates will be announced as soon as is appropriate, in light of current COVID-19 advice.

Our Two Skins will be released on June 19 via Liberation Records for Australia/ New Zealand and Jagjaguwar for the rest of the world.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? Sydney. I think the scene here is really interesting. Although the lockout laws hit us pretty hard, the quality of music is astounding. There are some killer jazz and funk bands, but it’s a shame those genres don’t get as much exposure as they do in other cities and countries. How did you first start playing music? I picked up the guitar at around 14 to be part of a high school rock band. From there it was just a process of exploring my own curiosity while trying to understand how the guitar worked. I was obsessed with metal for a few years, then moved on to blues which led me to jazz, funk and R&B. What's been happening recently? I’ve been in writing mode for a bit. It comes in waves but this last batch sounds really promising. It’s always super interesting when you stumble across new ideas or different sounds. Your new single 'Crazy' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track? Tame Impala definitely turned me on to more synth based sounds, but after spending time in London I was drawn back to the guitar, so I wanted to blend the two. I tried put in a lot of R&B influences in there too, but still maintain a rock feel. In terms of songwriting, I was reflecting on the state of the world and how we seem to be headed for further isolation and disconnection. Although it was written before the coronavirus broke globally, it has some eerie parallels. It touches on mental health because I felt it was important to talk about a subject matter that often feels uncomfortable to discuss. Music has an incredible way of opening you up to things you could never express normally. Ultimately the song carries a positive message - you’re never alone when dealing with mental health issues because they’re universal. How did you go about writing Crazy? I was staying with some friends in London for a few months in 2019. I played some shows in Europe and by the end of the trip I had run out of money. I couldn’t afford to do anything but stay in the apartment and write songs all day. I ended up with about 40 songs and Crazy seemed to be a stand out. It started out as a simple demo with just the chorus and a verse. Once I got back to Sydney I rewrote a lot of parts and recorded everything again, but the core of the song is still the same. The lyrics were written in Sydney once the instrumental was finalised. I kept rewritting them up until the last minute before I had to send it off to be mixed. Where and when did you record and who with? My friends Nick Twiney and Siebe Pogson from the band Funk Engine play keys and bass. I did all the guitars, vocals, synths and drums. We recorded most of the track in my bedroom studio at the end of 2019/start of 2020. Then I sent them to be mixed by Jackon Barclay who is a wizard at making things sounds great. What programs/instruments did you use? Logic as the DAW, Diva for the synths and samples for some of the drums. The guitars, keys and acoustic drums were either straight DI instruments or recorded live. How did you approach the recording and production? I wanted to blend rock with R&B, so I’ve got those huge synths and fuzzed out guitars in the chorus mixed with 808s in the verse. I usually record everything just as demos first in my room then eventually reach out to other people when necessary. The recording itself is pretty straight forward. I use basic Logic plug-ins and a focusrite audio interface for instruments. At the end of the day the song is the most important thing for me. If it’s a great song it should stand on its own. Who are you listening to at the moment? Theophilus London, SZA, Stormzy, Brian Eno and a 60s Argentinian band Sandhy and Mandhy. What do you like to do away from music? It’s all music for me at the moment. I teach guitar and do a lot of cover gigs on the side for regular income. What's planned for 2020? I had a few releases planned but with everything in lockdown who knows. Maybe just songwriting quarantine. Favourite food and place to hangout? Fruit smoothies in the studio. https://www.facebook.com/slinkysounds/

A Statement from the Organizer
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“We have been receiving an incredible amount of messages and support from all over the world after the Rainbow Disco Club 2020 cancellation announcement and are truly grateful for the support.

All of us are facing difficulties everyday now because of the effect of the Coronavirus. We had been busy trying to set up a crowdfunding and/or an alternative event until a few days ago but the situation surrounding the Coronavirus is changing every hour.

Many clubs in Europe and America have been forced to shut and events to be cancelled, and many borders are being closed and all these artists and promoters are suffering from the damage, losing their work opportunities just like us. At the same time, all the dance music fans are losing their places.

But, we must unite and fight against the unknown virus. Now, it is important to keep distance, avoid crowds and prevent the spread. We must limit our social activities and you and your loved ones must act carefully.

We must keep smiling. This is what we have learned in the last 11 years from you.
Hereby we would like to announce that we made the decision to throw a -hour long
streaming party on Saturday 18th April. This will be a first for us, but we will do what we can to replicate the actual festival in Higashi-Izu.

We hope this will be a special day for you during this long isolation time at home. Many fun merchandise items to enjoy the party at home are coming their way, so please look forward to them. Early-bird tickets are also ready in the hope that you will be counting the days with excitement.

We cannot gather at the same place but we look at this project as a campfire. We surround ourselves with music; we dance, talk, eat, smile well, and love a lot – let’s get warm.”

OCEAN GROVE'S 'FLIP PHONE FANTASY' DEBUTS AT #8 ON ARIA CHART, #1 ON ARIA VINYL ALBUM CHART

OCEAN GROVE’S ‘FLIP PHONE FANTASY’ DEBUTS AT #8 ON ARIA CHART, #1 ON ARIA VINYL ALBUM CHART

by the partae March 23, 2020
written by the partae

“Thrilling, weirdo party jams that have never heard of convention. Ocean Grove still proudly give not one single fuck.”
Kerrang!

“Great heavy records are those that are different from the pack, and ‘Flip Phone Fantasy’ is a fiery beacon in this regard, one that excites as much as it surprises.”
Album Of The Week, The Music

“Ocean Grove starved for this album, they bled for this album. ‘Flip Phone Fantasy’ is that union of imagination, time, and sound manifest…history will never forget the name Ocean Grove.”
10/10, Hysteria

“The band embody the importance of individuality… ‘Flip Phone Fantasy’ is a fitting tribute to that, and a breathtaking adventure to be with.”
10/10, Depth Magazine

Oddball icons Ocean Grove have debuted at a whopping #8 on the ARIA Album Chart following the release of their sweltering new album  Flip Phone Fantasy last Friday. The release also landed at #1 on the ARIA Vinyl Album chart.

The band’s technicolored sophomore record has been praised for its “no-fucks-given” attitude (Kerrang!), was named Album Of The Week via The Music, meanwhile Hysteria classed the record as one for the history books, asserting that the name Ocean Grove will never be forgotten alongside a whopping 10/10 review.

In true Ocean Grove fashion the four-piece – comprising frontman Dale Tanner, bassist Twiggy Hunter, guitarist Matt Henley and drummer Sam Bassal – remained as free and lawless as possible while birthing Flip Phone Fantasy, answering only to the truths of their famously-coined “Oddworld” while meticulously crafting every creative output themselves, from music production, to merch, to art.

Between the blistering chaos of opener ‘SUPERSTAR’, to the tenants of alt-rock present throughout ‘SENSE AGAIN’ and  the dreamy haze of closer ‘FREAKS’, Ocean Grove plough through a thoughtfully complex series of moods and bends on Flip Phone Fantasy, refusing to sit still long enough to be categorised into anything other than pure creativity and resistance to the mainstream.

Ocean Grove will take their acclaimed record on the road in the latter half of 2020.

Flip Phone Fantasy is out now via UNFD.

DEEP PURPLE Release “Throw My Bones” The First Single Of Their New Studio Album “Whoosh!” Out June 12

Deep Purple Release “Throw My Bones”The First Single Of Their New Studio Album “Whoosh!”Out June 12

by the partae March 23, 2020
written by the partae

Rock icons Deep Purple have released “Throw My Bones”, the first single from their highly anticipated new studio album “Whoosh!”.

“Throw My Bones” is a song to remember; a powerful insight into the bands 21st studio album.

It is available for Streaming and Download here:
deeppurple.lnk.to/ThrowMyBones

The single is accompanied by a music video that pushes the boundaries of time and place. It is an invitation to take a step back and see the bigger picture, a call for action and an invitation to observe the planet and the current situation on earth.

Deep Purple’s brand-new studio album “Whoosh!” follows their worldwide chart-topping albums “inFinite” (2017) and “NOW What?!” (2013). For the third time, Deep Purple joins forces with producer Bob Ezrin, and together they created the most versatile album in their collaboration, “stretching out in all directions” without any limitation, letting their creativity go.

“Deep Purple is putting the Deep back into Purple” was the half-joking motto in the studio after the first songs made it clear that Ezrin and Purple were on a path to creating an album pushing the boundaries of time, while voicing their resentment about the current situation of the world and addressing all generations.

“Whoosh is an onomatopoeic word that, when viewed through one end of a radio-telescope, describes the transient nature of humanity on Earth; and, through the other end from a closer perspective, illustrates the career of Deep Purple.” – ig

“Whoosh!” will be available as Limited CD+DVD Mediabook (incl. the 1h feature “Roger Glover and Bob Ezrin in conversation” and, for the first time, the full live performance at Hellfest 2017 as video), 2LP+DVD Edition, Limited Boxset and Digital on June 12 via on earMUSIC.

You can pre-order the album here:

JOSEF SALVAT RELEASES NEW SINGLE 'PAPER MOONS' WITH VIDEO NEW ALBUM MODERN ANXIETY TO BE RELEASED ON MAY 15

JOSEF SALVAT RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘PAPER MOONS’ WITH VIDEO NEW ALBUM MODERN ANXIETY TO BE RELEASED ON MAY 15

by the partae March 23, 2020
written by the partae
Australian-born London-based Josef Salvat shares ‘paper moons’, the latest single to be released from his forthcoming second album, modern anxiety.

A pulsating, dancefloor-filler, ‘paper moons’ follows the release of previous singles ‘modern anxiety’ and ‘in the afternoon’, along with album tracks ‘alone’ and ‘playground love’. The song seeks to address issues around sex and drug use within the queer community, and candidly narrates trying to love someone struggling with addiction and the ensuing frustration and resignation when they refuse to accept help or help themselves.

“In this case the addiction was an insidious, creeping cocktail of drugs and sex, that can creep up on people, and the song was written after one particularly harrowing early morning call from a dear friend I had once loved who had just left the last apartment of the night and, still high but coming down, was in floods of tears, full of regret, with a profound sense of loneliness and shame. It was a lot, and when the call finally ended, I walked straight into the studio and the song was written within the hour”, says Josef.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCb_tt4FQE8

Josef’s new record modern anxiety bursts with vitality, honesty and despair, and catalogues the tempestuous love-life which he traced during his twenties – affairs with men and women, short and long, torrid and true, looking for physical and cerebral love, often in all the wrong places. It was produced by long-time collaborator Rich Cooper (Mystery Jets, Tom Odell), mixed by Geoff Swan (Ed Sheeran, Grimes, Years & Years, Haim), and assisted by Niko Battistini (Charli XCX), with every track written by Josef himself. The songs pulse circuitously around his oft-times desperate search for identity, never quite touching a conclusion which feels a whisper out of its author’s anxious reach.

Josef first burst onto the international music scene in 2014 with the dark, brooding electropop of ‘Hustler’. He went on to release the critically acclaimed debut album Night Swim while quietly becoming an underground hero as a featured vocalist on tracks with the likes Gryffin and Tourist among others. He has sold out multiple tours in the UK and Europe where he also scored a #1 airplay record for ‘Open Season’, a gold record for ‘Diamonds’ and a gold album for Night Swim in France.

Never before has modern anxiety been more relevant than it is right now.

MARC BENJAMIN & DNMKG COOK UP A HOT VOCAL ANTHEM ON ‘HORIZONS’ (FEAT. ABLE FACES) Out now via Heldeep Records

Heldeep Records delivers another slammer, with a return from Marc Benjamin after his acclaimed ‘Wild Bill’ cut dropped on the label a couple of months ago. On this occasion, he teams up with rising talent DNMKG, who he collaborated with on ‘Hooked’ on Protocol Recordings last year. ‘Horizons’ features the Scottish pop band Able Faces, aka Jack and Mark McNeilage.

Fitting in somewhere between big room house and melodic techno, this classy cut is drenched in emotion and power. A gorgeous arpeggio filters up as far-off reverbs tease Able Face’s vocal and other melodic elements. A snare roll pushes us into the first break where the soulful, plaintive male vocal greets us. The drop brings us hovering bass swells, a punchy beat and the arpeggio swelling in intensity. Further subtle atmospheric touches are added as the track builds energy, such as muted siren sounds and the sweet counter melody. The climax lies on a shimmering chord rhythm, all the melodies intertwining beautifully as dashes of the vocal punctuate.

Marc Benjamin also recently collaborated with Fedde Le Grand and his previous cut ‘Wild Bill’ found support from the likes of Afrojack, Hardwell Showtek, Bingo Players, MOGUAI, Dada Life, Sophie Francis and Blasterjaxx.

Jack Back releases timeless rework of Chemical Brothers’ ‘Superstar DJ’

Jack Back the alias of global star DJ/producer David Guetta unleashes a fiery rework of Chemical Brothers 1999 classic ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’ entitled ‘Superstar DJ’. Before David Guetta was a household name, he spent his days in the underground scene playing in clubs. Jack Back sees Guetta’s return to the deeper side of his dance roots – where it all started. It also sees him reunited with the Positiva label for the first time in 8 years, where he enjoyed many of his biggest UK successes between 2008 and 2012.

‘Hey Boy Hey Girl is an absolute classic and it’s an honour to release this new rework. The record has been a long time coming and I’m very excited to finally release it’, says David Guetta.

2019 was a huge year for Jack Back with releases on Defected, FFRR, Toolroom all setting the club world alight. These releases have quickly gone on to amass over 60 million streams reaching the summit of the UK club charts (#1) and reaching the top 10 on Beatport. Jack Back also launched his first-ever performances on the white isle, with special sets at Hï Ibiza and Blue Marlin Ibiza. With performances en route globally, David Guetta’s Jack Back project is one to watch out for.

BLACK BUTTER RECORDS COSMO’S MIDNIGHT & RUEL – ‘DOWN FOR YOU’ OUT NOW Today, Australia's Cosmo’s Midnight and Ruel reveal the official video for their latest collaborative track “Down For You”, out via Sony Music (Australia), RCA Records (USA) and Black Butter Records (UK). Having drip-fed individual versions of the clip throughout the week, the trio of pop & electronic heroes now come full circle sharing a unified visual to bring their collaboration to life. Across two simultaneous shots, Cosmo’s Midnight and Ruel each weave their way through the colour-glazed maze of costumes, masks and wild guests at the same quintessential house party. Directed and filmed by Ruel’s resident creative Grey Ghost from the perspective of each individuals’ adventures, Cosmo’s Midnight are seen stirring trouble and performing switcheroos, while Ruel navigates the dizzying scenes solo in his token space suit, dodging the fallout of the twins’ mischief along the way. Amidst squabbles, a live band, a police raid, apparent cameos by each act and a presiding go-with-the-flow mood, the visuals give a glimpse into the three personalities that forged the original single. “I wanted to play with the collaboration between Ruel and Cosmo’s Midnight in a unique way that allows fans of both artists to enter into each others’ worlds. Both film clips are seamless one shot videos from start to finish and follow through many rooms and spaces in the one property: my own home. We rehearsed with Ruel and Cosmo’s Midnight a million times before launching into the real takes with 60 extras all dressed in crazy costumes. We shot both videos in 3 hours and we were shitting ourselves before every take as there were SO MANY things that could go wrong even if it was a slight mistake. BUT thank the lawd we got there and it worked!” Grey Ghost “Down For You” arrived earlier this year as an opus of the forward-thinking abilities that have propelled both Australian acts into the spotlight, with Ruel’s alluring pull amplified by Cosmo’s Midnight’s playful production and signature sonic prowess. The track sees a perfect unification of their diverse talents, effortlessly moving between genres and delivering moments the world can’t peel their eyes from. Reaching 6 million global streams online in just 2 months after receiving strong playlist support right off the bat, the infectious pop serenade is an example of the impact a collaboration of it’s kind can have in uniting two globally-reaching audiences. 2019 saw another huge year for Cosmo’s Midnight, peaking into new directions for the twins with the effervescent and groove-heavy sounds of singles “C.U.D.I (Can U Dig It)”, “Have It All” feat. Age.Sex.Location and “It’s Love” feat. Matthew Young. The duo kept busy on the stage playing Splendour in the Grass, Australia-wide festival tours St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival and Listen Out, selling out headline shows across the US and Asia, and performing to major sold out venues on a national tour. In 2018, the brothers cemented their reputation at the pinnacle of Australian electronic-pop with their debut, triple j Feature Album 'What Comes Next', which featured the now gold-certified favourites “History”, “Talk To Me” and “Get To Know”. Ruel has quickly risen as a pop phenomenon since breakout single “Dazed & Confused”, which earned him a 2018 ARIA title as Best Breakthrough Artist and over 100 million streams on Spotify alongside fellow favourite, “Younger”. Since, he has released his 2019 EP Free Time (now reaching over 128 million Spotify streams), achieved platinum-status for three singles including most recent hit “Painkiller”, performed across St. Jerome’s Laneway tour, sold-out Sydney Opera House shows and international tours, and has been announced to play his debut set at Splendour in the Grass 2020. Even though entertainment isn’t a vital necessity of life, we’ll try our best to provide a bit of comfort to everyone in lockdown. Stay safe and party in your pyjamas.
