INTERVIEW: Ghislain Robichaud on Canada, Australia and the Power of Music Diplomacy

by the partae September 15, 2026
written by the partae

As Consul General of Canada in Sydney, you join BIGSOUND 2026 as Canada takes on the role of Featured Guest Country. What does this opportunity mean for you, and why is BIGSOUND an important platform for strengthening the connection between Canada and Australia’s music industries?

BIGSOUND is an incredible event that has a sense of history, after 25 years of connecting the industry, and of fresh new opportunity. It was a great experience to be there with our Canadian delegation, recruited by CIMA and MMF Canada. The experience confirmed how valuable these industry gatherings are as a platform to meet, network, discuss global industry issues, and establish pathways to partnership.

How was your experience at BIGSOUND, and what has stood out to you?

It was fantastic – so many conversations and experiences throughout the week in Brisbane and during the Gold Coast familiarisation program. I’m particularly encouraged by the response of our Canadian delegates, who had business meetings and are generating long-term trade opportunities for their companies and for their Australian partners.

Canada and Australia share strong music cultures and geographically diverse creative communities. What similarities do you see between the two countries?

As Commonwealth cousins, Canada and Australia share many similarities despite our geographic distance. From respect for Indigenous heritage and Reconciliation, to the protection of national content and copyright in the age of AI and tech expansion.

At a basic level, Canadians and Australians enjoy strong friendships, and that forms an excellent basis for collaboration, particularly in the arts.

What has impressed you most about Australia’s music industry since arriving in Queensland?

The dynamism, energy, and passion for music were evident everywhere, from the artists and industry discussions to the venues. It all started with the First Nations opening ceremony in the mall. That was so powerful and connected everyone present to the significance of music and culture.

Canada has produced an extraordinary number of artists who have gone on to become global names. What do you think Australia does particularly well when it comes to developing artists, and where could the two countries learn from each other?

I’m impressed with the national presence of music and championing of artists in both countries. Australia has a well-established network of industry associations at various levels, from Music Australia and the #AUSIFY campaign to powerful initiatives in the well-being space, such as SUPPORT ACT, and local council involvement, such as the City of Brisbane and Gold Coast support at BIGSOUND.

As we continue to enter new terrains of globalisation with the impacts of AI – both positive and negative – this is an area where Canada and Australia can share expertise and pragmatic solutions as allies with common goals for the sector.

Have you discovered any Australian artists at BIGSOUND 2026 that you think could find an audience in Canada?

Too many to name! I’ll leave this with my Canadian industry delegates to help define and develop projects. One of our delegates has a business focus on touring an Australian blues artist in Canada. We had so many genre interests covered in our delegation – from experts in Hip Hop, Indigenous, Reggae, Neo-Classical, Indie-Rock, Heavy Metal, and Country – there’s something for every taste, representing the diversity of our music market.

What opportunities do you see for Canadian artists and music businesses looking to build stronger connections with Australia?

The camaraderie and collaboration raise potential for outcomes in many areas – from AI impacts and policy collaboration to sharing touring opportunities and garnering the expertise within each market. It will be important for follow-up to build on the momentum of Canada’s participation at BIGSOUND. This may include return delegations in both directions, individual projects, and sector-specific discussions.

There are some areas that may require a closer look to address irritants. Stay tuned, as we’re already in discussion regarding mission follow-up!

On the other side, what opportunities does Canada offer Australian artists and music businesses looking to expand internationally?

Like Australia, Canadians love their music! Opportunities abound as a similar-sized nation, with an array of festivals, events, venues, and industry gatherings across the country. I’d encourage Australians interested in Canada to find their like-minded allies in the industry and explore what’s possible. A good place to start may be via the delegation that’s just attended BIGSOUND and has Australia top of mind. See list here.

Music can be a powerful form of cultural diplomacy. What can music achieve between Canada and Australia that traditional diplomatic conversations sometimes cannot?

Music provides us with a safe space to meet and understand each other in a way that few other industries can. It provides a platform to share stories, knowledge, and experiences.

The Welcome to Country ceremony is a constant reminder of the entwined value of music and culture. At BIGSOUND, this was diplomacy that reflected ancient traditions expressed in music, dance, and story.

Today, this firsthand experience, of being on Country in Canada or Australia, and sharing music together, opens doors to discussion that can only be positive for diplomacy. In my experience, cultural diplomacy provides access and influence that traditional diplomacy alone cannot achieve.

When BIGSOUND 2026 is over, what would make you look back and say Canada’s involvement was a success?

I can already say it was a success, given the positive feedback from our crew on the ground in Brisbane for BIGSOUND. I look forward to seeing increased music flow between both our countries through tours, distribution deals, and other partnerships that help our societies grow, both economically and culturally.

Good Things Festival 2026 Unveils Huge Line-Up Led by Limp Bizkit, Simple Plan and Spiritbox

by the partae September 15, 2026
written by the partae

Good Things Festival has announced its 2026 line-up, bringing a major selection of rock, punk, metal, hardcore, alternative and pop punk artists to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane this December.

Leading the bill is Limp Bizkit, who will headline the 2026 festival following their appearance at Good Things in 2023. They are joined at the top of the line-up by Canadian pop punk favourites Simple Plan and progressive metal outfit Spiritbox.

The festival will take place across three consecutive days, beginning at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne on Friday 4 December before moving to Sydney Showground on Saturday 5 December and Brisbane Showgrounds on Sunday 6 December. All three events are 16+.

Limp Bizkit return to Good Things after their 2023 appearance, with the band continuing a career that has spanned more than three decades. The group emerged from the late 1990s nu metal movement and went on to become one of the most commercially successful acts associated with the genre.

Their catalogue includes 1997’s Three Dollar Bill, Y’all, 1999’s Significant Other and 2000’s Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, while their most recent studio album is 2021’s Still Sucks.

Simple Plan will also return to Good Things, having previously appeared at the festival in 2019. The Canadian band celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2025 and have continued touring and performing to audiences around the world.

Spiritbox will make their return to Australia after their Australian debut at Knotfest Australia in 2023. The Canadian band broke through internationally with their 2021 debut album Eternal Blue and followed it with their second studio album, Tsunami Sea, in 2025.

The festival’s 2026 line-up extends well beyond its three headline acts, with Polaris, The All-American Rejects, Bad Religion, Alexisonfire, Grinspoon, Millencolin, Bilmuri, Ministry, Chad Gray, MxPx, Neck Deep, Speed, Slowly Slowly, P.O.D., The Devil Wears Prada and Choirboys also joining the bill.

There are several special performances built into the line-up.

Alexisonfire will perform their album Crisis in full, while Swedish punk band Millencolin will perform Pennybridge Pioneers in full.

Ministry are billed for their farewell Australian performances, while Chad Gray will present “30 Years of Madness”, featuring songs from Mudvayne and Hellyeah.

Bad Religion will celebrate their “45 Year + 1 Anniversary” as part of the festival, adding another significant milestone to a bill already packed with artists whose careers have helped shape alternative and heavy music.

The Australian line-up also features Grinspoon, Speed, Slowly Slowly and Choirboys.

Grinspoon return with a catalogue that stretches back to the band’s formation in the 1990s, while Sydney hardcore group Speed continue to build their international profile.

Melbourne’s Slowly Slowly are also part of the 2026 line-up, alongside Australian rock veterans Choirboys.

Further international acts include All Them Witches, The Black Queen, Future Palace, Headwreck, House Of Protection, The Home Team, ivri, Kami Kehoe, Locked Shut, LØLØ, vianova and Voice Of Baceprot.

The line-up covers a broad range of sounds within the alternative spectrum, moving between established punk and rock acts, contemporary metal and hardcore, pop punk, alternative rock and emerging artists.

Good Things has also confirmed that Limp Bizkit, Simple Plan and Spiritbox are exclusive to the festival in Australia and New Zealand for this run, with no Australian or New Zealand sideshows for the three top-billed acts.

For fans looking to catch those three acts in Australia or New Zealand this December, the three Good Things Festival dates therefore represent the only opportunity to see them on this visit.

With the festival moving through Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane over one weekend, Good Things Festival 2026 brings together artists from different generations of alternative music, from acts responsible for defining entire scenes through to newer names continuing to push those sounds forward.

The 2026 edition is set to deliver a particularly broad program, with full-album performances, farewell appearances, anniversary celebrations and a mix of international and Australian artists spread across the three-city festival.

First Sounds Volume 15 Opens Submissions for First Nations Artists Across Australia

by the partae September 15, 2026
written by the partae

First Nations musicians, bands and producers across Australia are being invited to submit their music for First Sounds Volume 15, with submissions officially opening today, Tuesday 15 September.

A collaboration between the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) and Gadigal Information Service / Koori Radio (GIS), First Sounds provides a national platform connecting First Nations artists with Australia’s community radio network.

Since launching in 2020, First Sounds has released more than 14 volumes, with the initiative continuing to document and promote the breadth of contemporary First Nations music across the country. The project has delivered hundreds of tracks to radio presenters, with Volumes 10–14 generating more than 10,000 community radio spins over the past 12 months.

The latest volume will continue that work, bringing together music from artists working across genres including alt-pop, soul, rock, hip-hop, country and Blaktronica, while reflecting the stories, languages, cultures and connections to Country that sit at the heart of much First Nations music.

For artists, being selected offers exposure beyond the compilation itself. Successful applicants will appear on both digital releases and physical compilation CDs distributed directly to community radio stations around Australia through AMRAP, putting their music in front of broadcasters, tastemakers and audiences nationwide.

The impact of First Sounds can already be seen through artists who have featured on previous volumes. Filipino-Muruwari hip-hop artist DOBBY, who appeared on First Sounds Volume 1, went on to win an ARIA Award and reach No. 6 on the ARIA charts with his debut album Warrangu: River Story.

Community radio also plays an important role in supporting Australian music more broadly. Recent research led by Monash University and Griffith University found that Indigenous-led stations account for a third of the sector’s most Australian-music-intensive stations, highlighting the role community broadcasting continues to play in developing and connecting local First Nations talent with audiences.

For Volume 15, submissions will be reviewed by a panel bringing together First Nations artists, broadcasters, radio programmers and music industry professionals. The panel includes Thalia Skopellos, First Nations Project Coordinator at MusicNSW and producer and composer; Charlie Woods, artist and frontperson of Charlie Needs Braces; Gunai/Kurnai and Yorta Yorta artist, DJ and producer DJ PGZ, who is also a radio presenter at 3RRR; and Eora Sydney-based broadcaster Aaron Langford, presenter and producer at Koori Radio.

Charlie Woods, who has previously been featured twice on First Sounds, will join the selection panel for the first time for Volume 15.

“First Sounds means being connected to a community that recognises the power of our stories, culture and creativity,” Woods said. “It creates a space for mob to be heard, celebrated, and supported on our own terms.”

The panel will be looking for radio-ready tracks released within the past 18 months, with submissions open to First Nations musicians, bands and producers based in Australia.

First Sounds Volume 15 submissions are open from Tuesday 15 September until Tuesday 13 October 2026.

With its combination of national radio distribution, industry exposure and a focus on self-representation, First Sounds continues to provide an important pathway for First Nations artists to place their music directly in front of community broadcasters and listeners across Australia.

How to Apply

First Nations musicians from across Australia are invited to submit radio-ready tracks released within the last 18 months. Submissions will be reviewed and selected by an esteemed panel of First Nations artists, broadcasters, radio programmers and music industry professionals, bringing together decades of experience across music, radio, production and creative practice.

The panel includes Thalia Skopellos, First Nations Project Coordinator at MusicNSW and producer and composer; Charlie Woods, artist and frontperson of Charlie Needs Braces; Gunai/Kurnai & Yorta Yorta artist, DJ and producer DJ PGZ and radio presenter at 3RRR; and Eora Sydney-based broadcaster Aaron Langford, presenter and producer at Koori Radio. Together, the judges bring a deep understanding of First Nations music and culture, contemporary Australian music, radio and the evolving pathways for First Nations artists to connect with audiences.

Having been featured twice on First Sounds, Charlie Woods is thrilled to join the selection panel for Volume 15: “First Sounds means being connected to a community that recognises the power of our stories, culture and creativity. It creates a space for mob to be heard, celebrated, and supported on our own terms, and I am very excited to get the opportunity to listen to new music from mob, and support the next wave of great First Nations artists.”

Successful applicants will feature on both digital releases and physical compilation CDs distributed directly to stations nationwide via AMRAP.org.au, putting their sound in front of key taste-makers and community audiences across the country.

THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS

TUESDAY 8 DECEMBER – NORTHCOTE THEATRE, MELBOURNE

Now and forever, THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS proudly remain “a band of the people”, balancing raw honesty with uncompromising artistic integrity since forming at the turn of the century. An antidote to the age of opulence and over-stimulation, THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS’ bulletproof back catalogue incites adoration from day-one OG fans through to brand new converts, with earlier hits like Dirty Little Secret, Move Along and It Ends Tonight joining with more recent creative terrain, including their fifth 2026 studio album Sandbox.

Beginning a renaissance in the 2020s, the band sold out venues across North America on their first proper headline tour in over a decade, and continue to cut through the bullshit, silence the noise and meet audiences exactly where they are to this very day with the music that they need; and this fact was witnessed with gusto via Sandbox, their first ever independent release and a resounding reminder of rock’s unsung antiheroes doing what they do best: pulling no punches, and delivering sticky, sharp and sometimes sweet anthems.

2026 will also mark THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS‘ first performances in Australia in over 17 years.

MILLENCOLIN
‘PERFORMING PENNYBRIDGE PIONEERS IN FULL’WEDNESDAY 2 DECEMBER – NORTHCOTE THEATRE, MELBOURNE
TUESDAY 8 DECEMBER – TIVOLI, BRISBANE

MILLENCOLIN may have been started by a group of goofy teenagers singing about overeating and playing video games, but for over 25 years, the Swedish punk pillars have perfected their ever-evolving brand of melodic punk, continuously achieving global success, and also shaping skate punk in the 1990s and 2000s in the process. Now nine albums in, with thousands of shows and a lineup that has survived and thrived the entire time, MILLENCOLIN have toured the globe both as headliners as well as alongside the likes of The Offspring, Bad Religion and countless others. And most recently, the group released their 2019 album SOS which saw them stretch into new sonic and lyrical territory, praised by The AU Review for “its punchy punk rock beat, mixed with the relatable and at times cheeky lyrics the band have produced in the past”.

MILLENCOLIN will touch down in Australia later this year after previously electrifying crowds down under with Pennywise in 2025, and delighting Good Things Festival crowds in 2022. And as an extra icing on top this year, MILLENCOLIN will perform their groundbreaking and platinum-certified 2000 album Pennybridge Pioneers in full at the festival this December.

BILMURI

TUESDAY 8 DECEMBER – MEOW NUI, WELLINGTON
WEDNESDAY 9 DECEMBER – POWERSTATION, AUCKLAND

From a DIY phenomenon to selling out tours around the world and sharing stages with Sleep Token, BABYMETAL and Bad Omens, Columbus, Ohio singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer BILMURI has spent the past decade defying expectations while also catching the eyes and ears of some of the biggest names in the scene.2024’s AMERICAN MOTOR SPORTS revved up a breakthrough, gathering over 100 million streams and properly introducing widespread audiences to BILMURI‘s signature sound. And this talented creative, aka Johnny Franck, knew he had to come out swinging for the follow-up: enter 2026’s KINDA HARD where the guitars chug harder, the melodies stick around longer, the lyrics cut deeper, and everything is a lot more Muri….

Via his uncanny hybrid of alternative rock hooks, heavy metal riffs, emo introspection and countrified charisma, BILMURI now boasts over 418 million streams, a staunchly dedicated and ever-evolving global fanbase, and he continues to wow on stages around the world. Following his debut Australian national tour in 2026, BILMURI will return to electrify Aussie festival-goers this year at Good Things.

MINISTRY
‘FAREWELL AUSTRALIA’TUESDAY 8 DECEMBER – LIBERTY HALL, SYDNEY
THURSDAY 10 DECEMBER – HINDLEY STREET MUSIC HALL, ADELAIDE

Attention planet Earth: MINISTRY visionary Al Jourgensen is leaving the building.

With a history built upon 17 studio albums, 8 live releases, 8 side projects, multiple touring campaigns across 5 continents, an autobiography, 2 documentaries, the administration of last rites no less than 3 times, and the countless numbers of devoted acolytes and fans, the aural and charismatic magus of MINISTRY is boarding up the door in his psychic studio for the final time.

Pioneering electronic synth pop coated with abrasive industrial metal terrain, Chicago-hailing heavies MINISTRY defined the industrial world in the mid-to-late 80s with thrashing percussion and neon-soaked distortion, fearlessly helmed by Jourgensen. Poised to release album #17 this October, the band’s upcoming record Hate to Go – Take Out or Delivery will join some of their commercial juggernaut records like 1989’s The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste and 1992’s GRAMMY Award-nominated and platinum-certified Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs.

With their 2026 Good Things Festival appearances also marking their final Australian performances, don’t miss your chance to farewell MINISTRY with a send-off like no other.

P.O.D.
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS OCEAN GROVE
SUNDAY 29 NOVEMBER – THE TRIFFID, BRISBANE
WEDNESDAY 2 DECEMBER – 170 RUSSELL, MELBOURNE
TUESDAY 1 DECEMBER – THE GOV, ADELAIDE

They’ve been a band — and a vital one at that — for more than 30 years. But ask rock icons P.O.D. what still inspires them after all this time, and they’ll tell you they still operate as if they’re perpetual underdogs. Yes, with every new album they release, with every show they play, these musical lifers still feel they have something to prove. “We’re still here and we’re still creating some of the best music we’ve ever made,” says guitarist Marcos Curiel. “When it comes to heart, grit and soul, P.O.D. is your band.” Adds vocalist Sonny Sandoval: “We’re always still proving who we are — always having that punk-rock mentality.”

American nu metal pioneers P.O.D. have spent decades crafting their unique sound, bolstered by heavy riffs lined with hip hop, reggae and rap rock. Balancing aggressive sounds with uplifting themes, P.O.D.’s commercial appeal has seen them tour the globe time and time again, including their most recent Australian appearances back in 2018, while also unleashing era-defining singles like Youth of the Nation, Boom and Alive, sell over 12 million records worldwide and appear on high profile movie soundtracks including The Matrix Reloaded, Little Nicky, Any Given Sunday and many more.

An eclectic trio of misfits spawning from Melbourne, Australia, OCEAN GROVE have rapidly transcended into a global phenomenon, helmed by inventive thinking and staggering creativity that transcends definitions and defies musical norms. Merging nu metal, hardcore and alternative rock into their signature sound, aka Oddworld Music, OCEAN GROVE‘s influences span Korn, N.E.R.D, Faith No More and beyond, ultimately delivering an unforgettable sonic experience that is equally visceral and thought-provoking.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS FUTURE PALACEWEDNESDAY 2 DECEMBER – LION ARTS FACTORY, ADELAIDE
TUESDAY 8 DECEMBER – THE TRIFFID, BRISBANE

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA have always explored life’s extremes in their music. They’ve never shied away from staring down darkness, dealing with depression, making sense of confusion, soothing anxiety, or grappling with faith, existence, and death. At the same time, they’ve mirrored life’s ups and downs by alternating between crushing heaviness and heart-wrenching melodies. After over two decades of making music, their union as bandmates—but more importantly as friends—is stronger than ever.THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA most recently showcased their powerful bond as bandmates and creatives with their 2025 critically-acclaimed album Flowers, expanding into their most honest and heartfelt iteration to date, and seamlessly adding to their hallowed fan-favourites like Danger: Wildman, Hey John, What’s Your Name Again? and Dez Moines.

With emotional intensity and expansive soundscapes, Germany alt metal act FUTURE PALACE have been traversing the avenues of post hardcore, metal, electronica and synth pop since forming in 2018. From the vocal acrobatics of Maria Lessing through to their bewitching sonic output, FUTURE PALACE also just unleashed their fourth studio album Resurgence, retaining their crown as one of the biggest rising acts in modern metal.

Over the past few years, FUTURE PALACE have built a reputation as an exceptional live band. They have performed at some of Europe’s biggest festivals, including Wacken Open Air, Graspop Metal Meeting, Hellfest and Rock am Ring, while also completing their first successful North American tour. Their headline shows continue to grow in size, with many dates selling out across Europe as their fanbase expands worldwide.

ALL THEM WITCHES

TUESDAY 1 DECEMBER – LION ARTS FACTORY, ADELAIDE
WEDNESDAY 2 DECEMBER – CORNER HOTEL, MELBOURNE

You’ll find ALL THEM WITCHES on the outskirts. This collective of creative outliers have never followed a pre-trodden path or comfortably fit into an existing scene or style. Instead, the band resides at an elusive crossroads where clouds of slow-burning meditative distortion soak up strains of stratospheric psychedelia, out-of-body blues, and thundering no-frills hard rock.

Ticking off their debut Australian performances earlier this year, Nashville-hailing ALL THEM WITCHES first materialised in Nashville, TN, in 2012 and their organic progression was evident in fan-favorite releases, including Our Mother Electricity (2012), Lightning at the Door (2013), Dying Surfer Meets His Maker (2015), Sleeping Through the War (2017), and ATW (2018). They reached a critical high watermark on Nothing as the Ideal (2020), and earlier this year they harnessed the power of their unbreakable union as collaborators and friends on their seventh full-length LP House Of Mirrors.

KAMI KEHOE

WEDNESDAY 2 DECEMBER – OXFORD ART FACTORY, SYDNEY

KAMI KEHOE has spent nearly her entire life making music, but she’s finally reached a point where she’s able to make it without boundaries. Following the viral breakout of SLEEP WHEN I’M DEAD and her acclaimed debut, REVIVED, KEHOE has become one of hard rock’s most exciting names: earning heavy support from SiriusXM Octane, touring with Daughtry, Seether, P.O.D. and Breaking Benjamin, appearing at Louder Than Life, Warped Tour and Shiprocked, being named an Artist to Watch by Pandora, and having been featured in Billboard.

No longer interested in choosing between the different sounds she grew up loving, KEHOE spent the past two years embracing them all, laying the foundation for her new LP LOVE IS A WEAPON: a genre-bending collection that expands her sound in every direction, blending dark pop, alternative, punk, metal, R&B and electronic into something uniquely her own.

KAMI KEHOE + LØLØ

TUESDAY 8 DECEMBER – THE BRIGHTSIDE OUTDOORS, BRISBANE
WEDNESDAY 9 DECEMBER – CORNER HOTEL, MELBOURNE

KAMI KEHOE has spent nearly her entire life making music, but she’s finally reached a point where she’s able to make it without boundaries.

Toronto-born, Los Angeles-based rising pop punk star LØLØ’s journey started long before she became the  fully formed pop rock force we now know today, gracing the stage with her hard hitting passion and tour de force performance energy. As a child rifling through her eclectic and extensive CD collection including everything from the Wizard of Oz soundtrack, to Hilary Duff, to Green Day, she learned how to play Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) and never put the guitar down from that point on. Emerging in 2018, she attracted a rabid fan base with heart-on-her-sleeve lyrics and hard-hitting melodies spiked with a pop rock spirit.

LØLØ has since toured with everyone from Boys Like Girls to New Found Glory and Against The Current, collaborated with Simple Plan, and has performed at Lollapalooza, Sad Summer Festival, and Slam Dunk Festival. Along the way, she has released two full-length albums, including her most recent record, 2026’s acclaimed god forbid a girl spit out her feelings. Good Things Festival will also mark LØLØ’s debut Australian performances later this year.

Having shared stages with bands such as The Used, Don Broco, Senses Fail, and Real Friends over the years, THE HOME TEAM uses unique production to bring their electrifying performance to life; and Aussie fans will be soaking in the spectacle later this year.

HOUSE OF PROTECTION

WEDNESDAY 9 DECEMBER – THE BRIGHTSIDE (OUTDOORS), BRISBANE
THURSDAY 10 DECEMBER – HOWLER, MELBOURNE

Raw, hard-hitting, avant-garde and leading the charge for a new era of art-rock intensity, Los Angeles duo HOUSE OF PROTECTION balance confidence and chaos, bringing together Stephen Harrison (The Chariot) and Aric Improta (Night Verses) for a collision of post hardcore pedigree and boundless sonic experimentation that has seen them open for Poppy, Bad Omens and, most recently, Architects nationally for their 2025 Australian run.Lauded by the likes of NME, The Guardian, and Revolver, and named a Spotify Artist to Watch for 2025, HOUSE OF PROTECTION has ignited a new era of art-rock intensity, with the confidence and chaos of a band redefining what LA’s heavy scene sounds and feels like in 2026.

IVRI

THURSDAY 3 DECEMBER – THE ESPY, MELBOURNE

Florida-born artist IVRI builds the world she sings from—one shaped by D.I.Y. alternative, intense pop, shoegaze, rock, and sci-fi soul. Her emotionally raw writing and genre-blurring sound have earned billions of views, hundreds of millions of streams, and early praise from outlets like OnesToWatch.

Her breakout moment came when SadBoyProlific sampled her vocals on Alone and went viral, opening the door to a wave of collaborations and her own rising catalog. In 2025, she delivered her defining moment with tower of memories, a global phenomenon with nearly 4.5B+ video creations and chart-topping success across TikTok and SoundCloud. It paved the way for her acclaimed 2025 project, the theory of you, and in 2026 IVRI turned the page on her next chapter with the arrival of her latest EP evidence of you.

THE BLACK QUEEN

MONDAY 30 NOVEMBER – LYNOTT’S LOUNGE, PERTH
WEDNESDAY 2 DECEMBER – LEADBEATER, MELBOURNE

Ten years after the release of their acclaimed debut album Fever Daydream, THE BLACK QUEEN return to Australia for a special run of performances celebrating the record that introduced their singular blend of electronic, industrial and cinematic songwriting, 2016’s Fever Daydream.Released in 2016, Fever Daydream defied easy categorization. Blending electronic experimentation with cinematic synth textures, industrial undercurrents, post-punk atmosphere, deeply emotive songwriting, and razor-sharp production, the album carved out a space entirely its own. Over the past decade, its reputation has continued to grow, finding new audiences while remaining a touchstone for listeners drawn to music that values atmosphere, emotional vulnerability and sonic ambition in equal measure.

After astounding Australian fans back in 2019, heightened power synth pop group THE BLACK QUEEN will return later this year armed lashings of 80s production with glossy and emotional depth this December; prepare for shadows, synths and sweat.

LOCKED SHUT

TUESDAY 1 DECEMBER – JIVE BAR, ADELAIDE
THURSDAY 3 DECEMBER – LEADBEATER, MELBOURNE
TUESDAY 8 DECEMBER – LANSDOWNE HOTEL, SYDNEY

If you’re seeking something short, fast and loud, Missouri hardcore act LOCKED SHUT abide by three musical tenets when it comes to creating: fast, heavy and straightforward.Hailing from an area without much of a built-in scene, LOCKED SHUT have been putting it together themselves, booking shows and buolding it as they go. Revered for their relentless energy, blisteringly fast runtimes and barbed-wire grooves, LOCKED SHUT are the breakneck band of your dreams for anyone who loves hardcore music that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Come for the intensity, stay for the unpredictable pandemonium.

VIANOVA

TUESDAY 8 DECEMBER – BURDEKIN, SYDNEY
WEDNESDAY 9 DECEMBER – NORTHCOTE SOCIAL CLUB, MELBOURNE

The vision of vianova came to life when the brothers Felix and Paul Vogelgesang decided to move to Berlin in 2014. Driven by the desire to create music and evoke emotions, they aspired to write nothing but authentic and energetic metal songs. Between 2015 and 2019 the formation released a five-track EP and two singles, played an array of shows throughout Germany and managed to handle a couple of line-up changes. During the 2020 pandemic, the band reinvented themselves both visually and musically, and in 2024 vianova signed with label powerhouse Arising Empire. Now a meeting point between metalcore, elasticated 80s vibes, jazz, R&B and rap, vianova straddle hard-hitting immersion with a fearless pursuit of genre fusion. With over 19.1 million streams across their catalogue to date and counting, vianova’s viral trajectory has led to them enamouring TikTok and sharing stages with Thornhill, ERRA, Chamber and many more.

Interview: AmyJo Doh on ‘It’s a Girl’, Forgotten Women and Finding Her Voice in Madrid

by the partae September 14, 2026
written by the partae
What was the first spark behind ‘It’s a Girl’, and when did you realise there was a bigger story you wanted to explore?

We were on tour in Germany and I needed to buy some balloons for the show (I like to finish with a bit of a party as you may know) but the only ones I could find had ‘It’s a girl’ written on them.. Matty said when he saw them bouncing around on stage the riff and the ‘it’s a girl’ just came to him in a flash of inspiration! When he played it I just loved and the first thing that came into my head were inventions that were actually women led…. But we have probably just assumed they were men….. ‘whose the man that invented the fridge? It’s a girl! Etc….’

The song looks at the way women’s stories can be overlooked or erased from history. Were there particular stories that stayed with you while writing it?

ABSOULTUELY! I think every story really touched my heart and there are SO many that don’t even get a mention…. The one about the ale wives was incredible because I learned that’s how the ‘witch’s costume was created’ by men trying to overthrow the female brewers in a smear campaign.

The incredible Nooria Ahmad too ….. who the Taliban discovered disguised as a man just so that she could feed her family….. I am very saddened that nobody seems to know what happened to her……

There’s a lot of humour and irony alongside some pretty serious ideas in the song. Is that balance important to the way you write?

YES! Well spotted! Is it a coping mechanism? Laugh so as not to cry perhaps? I don’t know…. But it’s the way I live too….. I take fun very seriously.

The Spangles have a reputation for making music with something to say. Has that always been part of the band, or did it develop naturally over time?

Oh Im very happy to hear that! As a songwriter, I am inspired by life….. and so more often than not these are normally issues, concerns, reflections – I suppose if I didn’t have anything to say then I wouldn’t be writing songs!

What do you think music can communicate about an issue that a straightforward conversation sometimes can’t?

Because music is a universal language… it goes beyond words. It can often be very hard to find the right words…. But music allows you to express (and receive) ideas, feelings, philosophies all in one and at the same time. I think it’s one of the great powers of music and art in general. It can reach people in a way that simple conversation never will… and sometimes we can even reach hearts and minds without them even realising!

‘Menú del Día’ takes a completely different route, celebrating Madrid, food and everyday life. What does that side of Madrid mean to you personally?

It’s one of the things I LOVE about Madrid. It’s very quickly becoming a cosmopolitan, tourist hot-spot… but it still has some very traditional tabernas and bars and I feel glad that we have honoured them in this song.

You’ve played hundreds of shows across the UK and Europe. What have you learned about yourself from spending so much time on the road and on stage?

It’s such an adventure and I I am always learning …. You never know what each city, venue, public will bring…. It’s important to be open minded and prepared for anything! Ha ha.

But I would say on a personal level…. I am learning Acceptance. It sounds so obvious… but I have learned that I can only be who I am…. And I’m trying to be her the best way that I can!

The mind can really play havoc along the journey– and so it’s even more important to nourish the body and soul…… I didn’t treat myself very nicely for a very long time.. and that’s really changing now!

Madrid has been such an important part of The Spangles’ story. How does the city find its way into your music, even when you’re writing about something much bigger?

Madrid is where I was born as an artist – I started performing publicly here about 17 years ago… and so I feel a deep love and gratitude for her. If you have ever visited Madrid you will know what I mean when I say that she is so open and friendly, accepting, noisy and full of life…. Forver changing and expanding…… I’d love to think that comes out in my music!

When you listen back to the earlier Spangles releases now, what do you hear that reminds you of where you started?

I think the fun, raw, energy and the chaotic ‘give it a go’ vibe I is still reflected in some of our songs….

With ‘It’s a Girl’ now out, what are you hoping to do next that you haven’t done before?

Make some money? Ha ha… that would be FABULOUS OBVIOUSLY…. But we would really like to get into some big festivals in 2027 and get more attention from the industry here in Spain who have ignored us for so long.

Standing On The Corner Share New Album STANDING ON THE CORNER “II”

by the partae September 14, 2026
written by the partae

Standing On The Corner have released their new album STANDING ON THE CORNER “II” via XL Recordings / Remote Control Records.

Founded in Brooklyn, New York in 2015, Standing On The Corner is a music recording group whose work moves between composition, performance, film, installation, social work and sound. The project is rooted in cultural exchange between the United States, Puerto Rico and Africa, bringing together elements of soul, punk, salsa, doowop, jazz, funk, avant garde and rap through a distinctly New York City sensibility.

The group’s work has also been characterised by an emphasis on ephemerality, lived experience and site specific signification, with releases often distributed unexpectedly and within limited physical windows.

STANDING ON THE CORNER “II” was recorded by bandleader Gio Escobar alongside core collaborators Jack “Wacko” Nolan, Buz “Man-man” Donald and Clérida “Ca$h Clay” Eltimé. The album moves between fried psychedelia, rock and roll, no wave rap, R&B and post hardcore energy.

Featured artists on the album include The Warlockettes, Ladybug Mecca, Styles P, Bubba Dupree, Claudette Ortiz, Sonia Sanchez, Solange and Danny Brown.

The album includes previously released tracks including “Gimme my gun”, “Mr. Postman, wait!”, “Doesn’t mean a thing” and “Secrets”, alongside “Will it ever be the same?”, “Man may not last”, “Evil man 9”, “Roll over beethoven”, “Rifle prayer”, “Worried about what i say”, “Baby, oh baby!”, “The Night has arrived”, “Sonia”, “How deep is the sea?” and “Go 2 sleep pu$$y”.

Interview: Internet Romance – In Real Life, Escapism and Finding Connection Beyond the Internet

by the partae September 14, 2026
written by the partae

“Deep Blue” captures the feeling of escaping the noise and pressure of everyday life. What does escapism look like for you personally, and why do you think that feeling resonates so strongly right now?

Escapism comes for us in the form of switching off, ironically from the online world. I think we’re all fatigued by the pressure of having an online presence, whether it’s socially or at work, as well as the impact of the current financial and political climate. I think that’s why escapism really resonates with everyone right now.

Across IRL (In Real Life), you explore feminism, internet culture and the contradictions of modern life while still leaving plenty of room for humour. How does humour help you approach subjects that might otherwise feel heavy?

There’s a lot of discourse in the world, and whilst we believe strongly in standing up for what you believe in, we also know that sometimes people need a break from all of the seriousness. At its core, it’s about staying true to ourselves, but doing it in a tongue-in-cheek way to cut through the noise.

The ocean plays a big role in the feeling behind “Deep Blue”. What is it about being near the ocean that allows you to switch off and see things differently?

There’s something so grounding about being in nature, and most of the time, you can’t take your phone swimming, and in summer your phone gets too hot to use. It’s a nice reminder that you can actually switch off. There’s also something about the sound of ocean waves, which is a form of pink noise, that can be super calming. I think all of those things together help you switch off and see things a little differently.

Calling the EP IRL feels particularly relevant for a band exploring internet culture. What does being “in real life” mean to Internet Romance in a world where so much of our lives happens online?

Being present in real life is a real priority to us. We know a lot of bands now use online interfaces to make music from completely separate places, but we prioritise the importance of connecting weekly, from band practice to blocking out days at a time to record these songs in person. At the end of it all, human connection makes music so therapeutic and adds a touch of magic. Especially in a world where AI music is going to rise, we love to hear the imperfections and the grit that make our sound unique.

The EP takes some satirical shots at the manosphere. What inspired you to explore that side of internet culture, and what do you think people often misunderstand about it?

Being a female-fronted band, manosphere culture feels particularly jarring and we see the danger of that particular rhetoric. Again, in a world where people take themselves so seriously, we thought it was important to highlight this in a way that was witty and showed the ignorance of that viewpoint.

There’s a strong sense of self awareness throughout Internet Romance. How do you make sure irony and humour don’t take away from the emotional honesty behind the songs?

I think it all comes down to our raw sound. You can hear the emotion through every explosive hit of the drums, the melodic guitar and bass riffs that at times feel heavy. The cadence of our words and the choices to emphasise certain phrases all lean into the rawness and realness of our music.

Blake Bashfield produced “Deep Blue”. What was the creative relationship like in the studio, and what did he bring to the track that you hadn’t initially imagined? Blake was great to work with. We were fans of his work in both Smartcasual and Sesame Girl, and when we heard his production style, what stood out to us was the way he worked with vocals. Being an alt rock band that leans into a heavy sound but with a melodic female vocalist, it felt like a really good match. He elevated parts of our sound during the process and challenged us to think about song structures in a way we hadn’t before, while still enabling us to stay true to our sound. We felt that working with him really helped us achieve the best versions of the songs.

The name Internet Romance feels like a collision between something deeply human and something inherently digital. What does the name represent to you now that the band has developed further?

The name Internet Romance is an ode to how we met, but as we’ve come together, we’ve realised the real-life connection and friendship we’ve forged. We have the opportunity to come together and create sound that we love, and that connection and communication keeps us together and is key to our continuous growth as a band.

You’re bringing IRL to The Evelyn for the EP launch in October. How are you imagining the live show, and what do you want people to experience when they walk into the room?

We can’t wait to showcase these songs. A lot of people have heard different iterations of these songs over time as they’ve developed, but it will be the first opportunity for people to hear them in their final form. We want this to be an opportunity for everyone in the room to forget the pressures of life, come together, have a kick-ass night and celebrate!

We’re playing alongside two incredible Melbourne bands too, In The Caverns of Death and Last Embers, it’s a privilege to share the stage with talented musicians. Plus, to end the night, we have the funkiest DJ in all of Melbourne, DJ Retro Red, spinning tunes and closing out the night. So good vibes are guaranteed!

Once people have heard IRL from beginning to end, what do you hope they understand about Internet Romance that they might not have understood from hearing just one song?

By the end of it, we think people will hear how dynamic our sound really is, from melodic shoegaze elements to driving heavy rock. We’re not limited to one particular box. We honour our creativity and put out music that, first and foremost, we like. We’re not here to please the masses. We know our songs will resonate with those they’re meant for.

Y U QT Drop New Single ‘Get Me High’ Via Technicolour

by the partae September 11, 2026
written by the partae

British duo Y U QT have returned with their latest single, ‘Get Me High’, released via Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint.

The duo, made up of lifelong friends Darryl Reid and James Cooper, follow recent releases including ‘Really Works’ and ‘Call My Name’ with a track built around pulsing rhythms, soaring synths and vocal hooks.

‘Get Me High’ arrives as Y U QT announce a new monthly residency on Rinse FM, adding another chapter to an increasingly active period for the duo.

The new single follows their recent remix of Gorgon City and Jem Cooke’s ‘Oracle’, which was released via REALM Records in August. It also follows ‘Really Works’, released through Technicolour on June 25, and ‘Call My Name’, which arrived earlier in 2026.

Both ‘Call My Name’ and ‘Really Works’ have received support from BBC Radio 1 tastemakers including Danny Howard, Sarah Story and Arielle Free, according to the release.

Y U QT have also continued to build an international live profile, with recent appearances including a sold out four week Phonox residency, Land Beyond, Baltic Weekender, Cab Vol Barcelona’s Razzmatazz and Boiler Room Nottingham. The duo also toured across Asia earlier this year.

Their Tokyo set is now available on YouTube and has been featured by Mixmag Asia, while their wider catalogue includes the collaboration ‘Technique’ with Bullet Tooth and an official remix for Sub Focus.

Away from Y U QT, Darryl Reid has writing credits with artists including Charli xcx and Mike Skinner, while James Cooper runs a record store in Leicester.

Internet Romance are ready to disappear into “Deep Blue”

by the partae September 11, 2026
written by the partae

Melbourne outfit Internet Romance have just dropped “Deep Blue,” and it’s the first real signal of what’s coming on their debut EP, IRL (In Real Life).

There’s a very specific feeling the song is chasing: that pull to just switch off, tune out the noise, and float somewhere else for a while. Sonically it splits the difference between dreamy and driving, atmospheric enough to get lost in but with a pulse underneath that keeps it moving. It might be the most immersive thing the band have put out yet.

Singer Tilly Abdallah puts it simply: “Deep Blue is like a deep breath, it’s the feeling of visiting my favourite place – the ocean. The song serves as a break from reality and stepping out of the constant fast-paced rush of life.”

The track was produced alongside Blake Bashfield (Sesame Girl, smartcasual), and it feels like a bit of a turning point for the band, a new sound setting the tone for the EP to follow.

And IRL sounds like it’s going to have a lot going on. The band are using the record to poke at escapism, feminism, internet culture and the general contradictions of modern life, wrapped up in alt-rock that doesn’t take itself too seriously, think pointed digs at the manosphere sitting next to random Anchorman references, all held together by a pretty dry sense of humour.

If you want to hear it in person, Internet Romance are throwing an EP launch at The Evelyn Hotel on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, on 9th October 2026.

AmyJo Doh & The Spangles Release New Single ‘It’s a Girl’

by the partae September 10, 2026
written by the partae

Madrid based punk rock outfit AmyJo Doh & The Spangles have released their new single ‘It’s a Girl’ through Strap Originals.

Fronted by British singer songwriter AmyJo Doherty, the band’s latest track takes the familiar setting of a gender reveal party and uses it as the starting point for a wider reflection on women, history and social change.

‘It’s a Girl’ moves from the pink and blue imagery of gender reveal celebrations into a roll call of women who have been written out of history, while addressing what the band describes as ongoing patterns of silencing.

“It’s not about gender,” Doherty says. “It’s about reconnecting with the feminine energy in all of us — compassion, respect, harmony, empathy.”

She adds: “Look where all that anger and ‘divide and conquer’ energy has actually gotten us. Enough is enough. The time has come for change, and it starts with each one of us.”

The track reflects the band’s description of their music as “punk with a purpose”, combining a raw and energetic approach with a message centred on social change.

The release also features the Spanish language B side ‘Menú del Día’, which pays tribute to the traditional dishes and lunchtime atmosphere of Madrid’s tascas. The band says everyone is welcome at the table, apart from racists and fascists.

AmyJo Doh & The Spangles have built their reputation through an extensive live schedule, performing more than 100 shows a year. Their touring history includes shows with The Libertines and AmyJo Doherty’s brother Pete Doherty across the UK and Europe.

Following a recent UK run, the band are set to perform in Sevilla on 11 September and Madrid on 12 September. The Madrid show will serve as an Amnesty International partnered single launch at DIY punk venue Sala La Trinchera.

The band have released two albums, ‘Calle De The Spangles’ in 2017 and ‘SpangleLandia’ in 2024.

AmyJo Doh & The Spangles are AmyJo Doherty on vocals, German Ormaechea Hernandez on bass, Matty Tyack on guitar and Jorge Javier Armijos on drums.

NYE ON THE HILL ORIGIN STORY

NYE on the Hill grew out of The Hills Are Alive Festival, a unique and much-loved event that began as an invite-only party on a hill for 334 music-loving friends-of-friends (many of whom were musicians in the local Melbourne music scene).

The original concept, which still thrives today, is that anyone, at any time, should be able to turn to the person next to them, introduce themselves, and then party together like old friends while discovering the best up-and-coming musical talent the region has to offer.

TOKO NLZ Introduces Himself With Debut Single ‘Family Over Everything’

17-year-old Southeast Sydney rapper TOKO NLZ has released his debut single, “Family Over Everything”, via Kobie Dee’s new label, Twenny47 Records.

The track introduces TOKO NLZ through a raw and deeply personal hip-hop record centred on grief, memory, loss and the importance of family, including the experience of losing a brother and finding connection in the family that remains, as well as bonds built throughout life.

“Family Over Everything” is built around a soulful, Boom-Bap-influenced hip-hop style. The song was originally sketched out over 2Pac’s “Thugz Mansion” and was the first song TOKO NLZ ever wrote. It was later rebuilt with producer LANDZZ during their first session together at Kobie Dee’s Twenny47 Studios in Maroubra.

The release also marks the first single from Twenny47 Records, the new imprint established by Gomeroi hip-hop artist Kobie Dee in partnership with BAM for distribution.

Twenny47 Records grew from Twenny47 Studios, a community-focused space in Maroubra where Kobie Dee runs music, arts and culture workshops focused on culture, connection and creativity.

Kobie Dee first became aware of TOKO NLZ through young people attending the studio. After hearing about the young rapper’s ability, Dee invited him to the studio, where TOKO NLZ performed across multiple beats and styles during a workshop.

Kobie Dee said he was immediately impressed and was surprised to learn that TOKO NLZ was only 16 at the time.

“Family Over Everything” was also the first song TOKO NLZ recorded at Twenny47 Studios. Producer LANDZZ was in the studio at the time and created the beat, with TOKO NLZ then recording the track.

The pair have continued working together at the studio, with the release describing them as being in the studio every week since that first session.

For TOKO NLZ, “Family Over Everything” establishes the starting point for his music and the relationship he wants to build with his audience.

“Making this my first single is a great way to introduce the audience to my sound and for others to help understand me as an artist,” TOKO NLZ said. “It sets the tone for future releases and the relationship I want to build with my audience.”
