Melbourne Recital Centre and Crown Ruler bring the summer vibes to Southbank with a free outdoor music series featuring Melbourne’s finest DJs.

The Centre’s brand-new Forecourt on Southbank Boulevard is the perfect place to enjoy great music beneath the stars this summer. Every Thursday and Saturday night until the end of March, Crown Ruler will transform this unique open-air space with an unmissable program celebrating the Melbourne’s rich artistic pedigree.

With a backdrop of native trees, soak up the last of the day’s rays and linger long into the night with cocktails and food from Blondie Bar, while listening to a dream line-up of performers curated by Crown Ruler.

Emerging from the great cosmic dark, ORB are back with their first Australian show since August 2019. In a night of grand thematics, the 3 piece will bring their blend of wah drenched fuzz and dystopian sci-fi to the strictly limited capacity, fully seated Forum Melbourne. Sonically diverse and entirely monolithic, their wall of sound is set to envelope the audience across two divine sets. PETER’S STATEMENT 

To my friends in the music industry …. their families and those who love music.

As we are soon going into our second year, of little, or no gigs as a result of Covid ….

let us not forget what we need to do.

Let’s support each other… continue to check in and ask how we are doing.. be positive that a day is coming when we WILL get back to performing live, safely…. and do what we can to be a part of that wonderful day.

We need to remain positive, uphold our industry, where you see negativity in any area, including media…gently remind that it is through supporting our industry that we will ALL do better in the end.

Let’s not forget that although a large percentage of people have been able to get back to work …the live music industry, along with much of the hospitality and tourism industry hasn’t …. many of our favourite musicians and event company workers are on the dole, and suffering mental health issues. …

we need our media to report positively on us, and support the return of live music regularly in their reporting.

Let’s push the music media to agitate on our behalf.

We need government to find money to get us through this time, lots of it… we need them to Save Our Stages, as has been done in the US and across Europe through large grants, tax write offs and investment… and as well create a business interruption insurance policy to incentivise event presenters to put on events… and be protected in not going to the wall should an out break of Covid shut down their businesses at short notice… and protect that artists, crew  and Suppliers will get paid should that occur… the Federal government did it more than six months ago for the Film Industry to get them back to making movies… why are we still waiting?

If you possibly can…please hold on to your tickets, as concerts and events are RE-scheduled ….again.

Do you know that for each ticket refunded, there is a service charge from the ticket agency… up to $8?

The show presenters , facing up to two years of no shows… is charged for this, after having paid staff to work on the show, bought advertising and paid a deposit to the artist which will be returned with costs deducted… this isn’t sustainable for our industry… and will result in less promoters and less shows..particularly in the indie area.

Our issues haven’t gone away… they just aren’t being discussed regularly… and they aren’t being reported, as our industry …endures this marathon of waiting….and in so many cases not being able to wait any longer … and businesses closing, as well as very talented people leaving our industry.

It’s up to us to look out for each other and Live music….I know many of you are suffering in silence.

However, it’s time to raise our voices…. we are the Live Arts…. and we love what we do, and we are a fundamental part of society… and it is unjust for government not to support us more than they have financially …simply by extending Job Keeper to those industries they have regulated not to be able to get back to work without major restrictions… the Live Music Industry, we will see many of our fellow workers be laid off when it end in March. How can that be justified on any level.?

There is so much for us to do.

Summer is the first track from a forthcoming EP titled Homelands by Aboriginal led punk-rock band Chasing Ghosts. Frontman Jimmy Kyle is a proud Koori man, a descendent of the Thungutti mob from the mid-north coast of NSW. He speaks and writes with a potent mind. Every track on the forthcoming EP is about real people and real situations, all of them born from intense real-life stories. Wanting to do justice to the topics while bringing everyone on the journey and simultaneously still speaking the truth was a pressure that weighted heavy. “I was scared to write these songs, because a lot of the topics are challenging,” says Jimmy Kyle. “But that’s how I knew I was onto something. It made me feel nervous.”

“Summer” is one hell of an amped track with a beat that drives so strong it has the legs to keep rockin’ all Summer long. Produced by Jimmy Kyle and Lincoln Le Fevre (Luca Brasi, Wil Wagner, Lucy Wilson), accompanied with an equally charged and culturally strong clip by award winning filmmaker Ben McFadyen and cover art by Wiradjuri, Ngiyampaa woman and Instagram design influencer @coffinbirth, this power posse is one you need to be across.

“Summer “finds Jimmy Kyle singing in both English and, for the first time ever, in his native tongue as he explores the horrors of the 1856 Towel Creek massacre. The singer-guitarist delivers the song through the eyes of a grieving Aboriginal Elder, of the story of “Baaba” (Babaang) Jack Scott as a baby; the lone survivor of the Towel Creek tragedy.  Incredibly, through a schoolyard incident when he was younger Kyle learned of a close family link to that Elder.

“The song explores white nationalism, colonisation, assimilation and ultimately reconciliation,” offers Kyle. “It asks the question of white Australia to come and reconcile the true history of the country and invites non-Indigenous Australians to see themselves as an extension of Aboriginal people.”

With a strong passion for Aboriginal languages Jimmy Kyle is committed to his culture and his community and has a long history working with First Nations Youth, Elders and community. Further, Jimmy’s cultural awareness training workshops and seminars are in high demand due to the cultural depth his brings to this space. He works with entities such as the Victoria Police, DHHS and other government agencies to help them better understand First Nations cultures and histories. “Only having a little knowledge is dangerous,” he says.

Melbourne Music Week is delighted to announce nine exciting new additions to its extended summer program.

Melbourne Music Week has once again teamed up with The Push and the Australian Music Vault to stage an all-ages alcohol, drug and smoke-free music event that will take place at Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Saturday 20 February featuring Skegss, Ruby Fields, King Stingray and The Vovos as part of the Arts Centre Melbourne’s Live At The Bowl music season.

Each Monday night in February, two iconic Melbourne music venues will program Happy Mondays – A Live Music Residency also at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. This month-long program in partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne channels the spirit of a classic Melbourne residency with some of the best local artists as selected by loved venues such as The Old Bar, The Tote, Bar Oussou and The Evelyn. Catch Cash Savage and The Last Drinks, The Meanies, Sui Zhen and more instantly recognisable local legends.

Anti Fade Records returns with a second Melbourne Music Week–Extended  night for 2021 at Max Watts, showcasing some of the finest punk bands Australia has to offer – Constant Mongrel, Primo!, EXEK and Alien Nosejob.

Born in the basement of the Mercat Cross, Melbourne Techno Collective has run events all across the city over the last 18 years. Join them on Friday 19 February as they celebrate ‘18 Years of Techno’ with Monolith Live, Craig McWhinney, Matt Radovich and more, at iconic Melbourne party venue, New Guernica.

The Immigration Museum’s courtyard will come alive with art, music, performance and food, after hours on Friday 26 February for Summer Courtyard: Metamorphosis. Enter a fantasy world where anyone can be anyone, as the Immigration Museum debuts two new exhibitions Atong Atem’s To Be Real for PHOTO2021 and Becoming You: An incomplete guide.

Finally, critically acclaimed Spunk Records signed Floodlights will illuminate the Toff on Saturday February 27 with their honest, catchy rock music that melds ‘80s alternative rock with ‘90s New Zealand jangle-pop.

Tickets for these newly-announced shows are on sale from midday on Tuesday 19 January, with the exception of Summer Courtyard: Metamorphosis and all Sidney Myer Music Bowl shows, which will be on sale Thursday 21 January.

The nine new events will run alongside the already announced Rebel Yell Work Out Live, which will arrive at The John Curtin on Saturday 30 January. This aerobics workout is paired with the pulsating techno soundtrack of her latest album ‘Fall From Grace’ and will up heart rates in more ways than one.

Tickets are also selling fast for home-grown and worldwide exported punk royals Clowns, who are back for their first hometown Melbourne show in nearly two years at 170 Russell on Friday 19 February. Supported by These New South Whales, it’s gonna get sweaty in the safest way possible.

Limited tickets remain for a handful of previously announced shows including Baker Boy at the Melbourne Recital Centre, iconic rock musician Adalita playing the Grand Organ at Melbourne Town Hall, and an audio visual exploration with Melbourne producers Ara Koufax and iconic DJ and academic Simona Castricum at the Capitol Theatre.

The sell-out success, Synthony, comes to Melbourne for the first time for a ‘One Night Only’ epic outdoor show! The ultimate celebration of the last 30 years of Dance Music, Synthony is a unique collaboration between Orchestra, DJs, live vocalists and feature musicians.

The super-charged and energetic Synthony will showcase the biggest dance anthems from icons such as: Avicii, Eric Prydz, Fatboy Slim and Basement Jaxx to name just a few, backed with the full might of a 60+ piece Synthony Orchestra.  The show is stacked with iconic stars from across the Australian music spectrum playing their global hits including: Miss Connie (Sneaky Sound System), Ilan Kidron (The Potbelleez), Jenny B (Corona), Mobin Master, Andy Van (Madison Avenue / Vicious Records) and Mark Dynamix.

It’s no secret that 2020 has been a tumultuous rollercoaster for event promoters.  The Synthony tour was due to be announced just days before New Zealand went into Level 4 lockdown and the future of the tour all of a sudden became awfully uncertain.  Shows across Australia, Asia, and the U.S were in the pipeline for 2020.  Months of preparation and negotiations with Artists, Venues and Sponsors were all dashed and the team behind Synthony, had to rebuild the program all over again.

Duco Events Promoter Rachael Carroll says she’s incredibly excited to bring the show back to Australia and hold the first outdoor show at the iconic ‘Sidney Myer Music Bowl’: “Given the circumstances, it’s amazing to be able to bring this show to the music hub of Australia – Melbourne and have our show at the ‘Sidney Myer Music Bowl.’ We know as soon as Melbournians see this show, they’ll be coming back year after year.” 

The show will be run in a Covid-safe environment set up by the Arts Centre Melbourne, that will include socially spaced tables and seats and innovative private decks for groups of up to 6 people.  Carroll stated: “The Covid safe set up at the Bowl, is an incredible innovation by the Arts Centre Melbourne.  We are going full throttle with this show, so fans can expect an amazing high energy experience in a socially distanced safe format.  After everything Melburnians have been through, we can’t wait to put on this epic dance party for them!”

The Synthony show has only been possible thanks to the support of the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – an Australian Government initiative. “We certainly would not be putting on this show without the RISE funding support from the Australian Government and support from Arts Centre Melbourne.  These partners have given us the confidence to invest, take risks and put on events, that will see some Artists and suppliers secure their first job and income after a very long break in event activity,” said Carroll.

About Synthony

Founded in 2017 by DJ and producer, Erika Amoore and fellow Kiwi David Elmsly, Synthony sold out its first ever show at the Auckland Town Hall to a packed house and unprecedented reviews.  The show’s creation brought together key New Zealand talent, with Peter Thomas, conductor and music director of the Auckland Symphony Orchestra believing in the unique concept and enlisting the services of Ryan Youens, an arranger with hundreds of professional credits to his name, including film scores for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug.

After sold-out events at Auckland Town Hall in 2017 and 2018, Duco Events, a major event promoter with a 16-year track-record, purchased the concept with an ambitious long-term vision to expand the event from one city to multiple venues and cities across the globe.  In 2019, they took the show to Brisbane, Australia and also sold out five shows across NZ later that year.  Over six shows, four Orchestras and hundreds of musicians played to over 14,000 fans in 2019.

In 2020, Synthony staged its biggest ever NZ-wide tour, supporting the live music industry’s recovery post COVID19.  Synthony returns to Australia this April for its first outdoor show at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne with other Australian cities to be announced, followed by other international markets.

Recorded between songwriter Jack McEwan’s home studio and Tone City Studios in WA, ‘Pukebox’ is a delicious example of how tight the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets sound has become over their last few years of writing and touring.

Receiving its worldwide premiere on BBC Radio 1 with Annie Mac, ‘Pukebox’ captures the essence of SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound and sits as a great insight into the new era ahead.

“‘Pukebox was the first song I used as a reference while creating the flavour for the record. I’d had the idea for the track for a while but I never thought it fit the style of our previous albums. I wrote the first part in first person, talking about my time at home drinking moonshine and wondering who else was doing the same. Then I compared that in the second verse with a secondary version of myself who I wrote about as a character, a little bit lost, waking up with a hangover in random cities trying to find a meaning while it sailed right past me. Both unaware of each other’s existence while slowly going mad through repetitive consumption.”

2020 saw Psychedelic Porn Crumpets keep the wheels turning with new music, despite being unable to tour; releasing ‘Mr. Prism’ and ‘Tally-Ho!’ to keep the appetites of fans satiated. Joining them on the drive down the M1 from Brisvegas, Concrete Surfers are a Brisbane band to the core and create a unique blend of garage-rock and pop. Their distinctive sound and energetic live performance have created a fast-moving trajectory for the group of four and 2020 saw the release of the song ‘Never Understood’ – a track that was produced by Fletcher Matthews (Dear Seattle, Sweater Curse, CLEWS, Fritz).

Hailing from the nation’s capital to make their first-ever Gold Coast appearance Teen Jesus & the Jean Teasers are a band of four nineteen year old gals with a penchant for plaid and a knack for crafting gritty, nostalgic grunge pop.
Their 2019 breakout single, the alt-rock infused ‘I Like That You Like That’, showcased a darker and more mature evolution of sound for the four-piece, and was followed up by  ‘See You In A Bit (I Still Care)’ – a tenacious and honest ode to love-hate relationships. With a whole lot of love for both each other and their audiences, and a whole lot more in store, Teen Jesus & the Jean Teasers are a name you need to know.

Since Teenage Joans first burst onto the stage only one year ago, they have left every room they play full of brand new and soon-to-be long-time fans. This year the triumphant indie/pop-punk two-piece took home the crown as triple j Unearthed High winners of 2020 and aren’t planning on slowing down anytime soon. Cahli and Tahlia have a lot to say and they are going to say it, you are going to listen, and nobody is going to stand in their way.

Coming in hot from Jervis Bay, NSW, Debbies are a two-piece rock band with a sound that combines those summery slacker vibes with upbeat hard-hitting rock melodies. The band have fast become one of the most buzzed-about new names in Australian rock music after being named one of the five triple j Unearthed High finalists for 2019.

To join the other ladies on stage, will also be Gold Coast local Lily Papas. The singer-songwriter has been known with her introspective indie pop, noting musical influencers from Florence & The Machine, Lana Del Rey, London Grammar and David Bowie.
