Hardware Group and Stable Music kicked off their first Piknic Électronik event last Sunday! After a spectacular start to their seventh season in Melbourne over the weekend, with its first socially distanced Outdoor event, the crew are gearing up for the next show.  This upcoming summer, Piknic Électronik will host multiple events at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, as part of the ‘Live at the Bowl’ Summer series. Events will run through until the close of the season in early April 2021.

I OH YOU are psyched to share ‘Lay Down (Live at Brixton)’ today, along with announcing DMA’S forthcoming Live at Brixton album. Following huge fan demand, the live album will be officially released on Friday 5 March, the one-year anniversary of their headline show at London’s O2 Academy Brixton which saw the band play to a sold-out crowd of 5,000.

Along with being released digitally, the album will come as a very limited vinyl pressing, a double ‘Smoked-Pink’ LP set in a gatefold full of images from their now infamous London show. Inspired by a flare that was set off during the show, the ‘Smoked-Pink’ vinyl is one for the avid collectors amongst us and expected to sell fast.

March 6th, 2020. A sold-out audience fills the O2 Academy Brixton’s cavernous space from wall-to-wall. The lights go down, the crowd erupts into a chant and DMA’S tear into their opening song ‘Feels Like 37’ accompanied by 5000 voices passionately singing along. The band are playing the biggest headline show of their career to date half a planet away from home, yet have conjured the atmosphere of an intimate homecoming celebration.

What follows is a show that will live long in the memories of the band and their fans alike. From early favourites ‘In The Air’ and ‘Lay Down’ to new material such as ‘Silver’ and ‘Life Is A Game Of Changing’ from their hugely successful 5 x ARIA nominated album THE GLOW (#2 in Australia and #4 in the UK), the band, in full live mode, inspire a rapturous reception.

12 January 2021: Triennial EXTRA, the NGV’s free late-night festival, returns in 2021 featuring a program stacked with live performances, DJs, dance, food, pop-up bars and after-hours access to the NGV Triennial exhibition, launching Friday 15 January and running nightly until 14 February.

Over 31 nights local artists, musicians and dancers will perform throughout the Gallery responding to artworks in the NGV Triennial exhibition. Meanwhile in NGV’s Grollo Equiset Garden the Triennial Summer Stage will feature nightly guest DJ sets, presented in partnership with Melbourne Music Week.

Award-winning Melbourne chef Adam D’Sylva will transform the NGV’s Garden Restaurant and new outdoor dining space into a pop-up restaurant exclusively for Triennial EXTRA. Open for lunch and dinner daily, the restaurant presents an exciting and accessible menu of shared plates, inspired by D’Sylva’s popular modern Indian eatery Tonka.

Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV, said “Triennial EXTRA will champion the best of Melbourne’s art, music and dining during a time when Melburnians are looking to reconnect with our city’s creative talents. Newly commissioned works by local performers responding to the NGV Triennial will present the exhibition in a new light throughout the late-night season.”

Highlights from the Triennial EXTRA program include:

• AS SHE FLOATS BY SCOTTY SO – Tue-Sun, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm – Exhibiting NGV Triennial artist Scotty So appears across the Ground Level of NGV International silently lip syncing a Chinese Opera inspired by the myth of the Chinese moon goddess Chang’e. Dressed in a holographic Tang dynasty style Hanfu robe with hair and makeup styled after the traditional images of the moon goddess, So performs as an offering to the spirits of the space.
• SCARLETT NIGHT BY SCOTTY SO –Tue-Sun, 8:30 pm – 9:00 pm – Scarlett So Hung So, artist Scotty So’s drag persona, takes visitors on a journey through time in Adam Nathaniel Furman and Sibling Architecture’s NGV Triennial installation Boudoir Babylon 2020, paying homage to Japanese actress and singer Yoshiko Yamaguchi, 60s songstress Rebecca Pan, Greek diva Maria Callas and Australia’s queen of pop Kylie Minogue.
• OPENING WEEKEND DJS – 15, 16 & 17 Jan, 6.00 pm – 9.00 pm – Setting the scene on the Forecourt and in the Garden, local DJs performing during EXTRA’s opening weekend include emerging talent Millú; local nightlife mainstay Andee Frost; disco, funk and electronic specialist Edd Fisher; and multifaceted classical house DJ and curator Merve.
• JEFF KOONS ON ICE BY HAMISH MCINTOSH – Mon, Wed & Fri, 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm & 7.00 pm – 8.00 pm – Emerging choreographer Hamish McIntosh presents a response to Jeff Koons’s 1998 sculpture titled Pink Panther. Paired with Koons’ mirror-polished, stainless steel NGV Triennial sculpture Venus 2016-20, McIntosh reframes the US artist’s creative genius through the durational embrace of two young female dancers.
• LUCENT BY NAREE VACHANANDA – Mon, Wed & Fri, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Naree Vachananda explores the classic Japanese Noh theatre in a choreographed performance titled Lucent. The presentation draws upon connections between Noh theatre and Cerith Wyn Evans’s NGV Triennial light work C=O=D=A 2020 with dancers creating an arc of movement with their bodies to interpret the complex forms of Wyn Evans’ white neon sculpture.
• SPOTLIGHT ON SHADOWS BY SHINJITA ROY – Mon, Wed & Fri, 7:00 pm – 7:30 pm & 8:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Choreographed by Shinjita Roy, Spotlight on Shadows combines Kathak, one of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance, and the Salon et lumière 2020 installation, a digital recreation of the NGV’s British and European 19^th century art Salon Hang. The presentation features dancers negotiating the space between light and shadows.

Along with the Tonka pop-up restaurant, NGV diners have the opportunity to sample a limited-edition pastry exclusively created for NGV’s Tea Room by iconic Melbourne patisserie Lune Croissanterie in celebration of the NGV Triennial and capturing the organic nature of Makiko Ryujin and Michael Gittings’ NGV Triennial work Saṃsāra 2020.

All night guests can enjoy unique dining offerings in the Garden, Forecourt café and Tea Room which will host a Yering Station Wine Bar with a food menu designed to pair with the Yering Station wines. A wide range of drink experiences will be on offer during the festival including Asahi brew and Yering Station wines in the Garden and a pop-up Asahi Bar in the Great Hall.

Students from the Victoria College of the Arts have responded to artworks within the exhibition to create a series of moving performances, with thanks to Research Partner of the Triennial, The University of Melbourne.

MELBOURNE, Nov 30, 2020 – Coopers Brewery and Live Nation have joined forces to crank up its popular Live, Loud and Local gig series by taking the show on the road to help pubs and live music rebound from the events of 2020.

Following the success of its initial livestream events in April and May this year, Australia’s largest family-owned brewery has partnered with some of the biggest names in Australian music to welcome patrons back into pubs across the country.

Top Australian acts including The Rubens, Bad//Dreems and Crooked Colours have been confirmed for gigs across the nation over the coming months with more headline acts and venues soon to be announced.

Crooked Colours will headline the first show of the Coopers Live, Loud and Local series on January 17, 2021 at Hotel Rottnest in Perth

The Rubens will play February 3, 2021 at Selina’s, Coogee Bay Hotel in Sydney, and Adelaide’s own Bad//Dreems will perform February 19, 2021 at The Bridgeway Hotel in Adelaide. 

More shows and artists will be announced for gigs in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth in early 2021.

Each event will be produced by Coopers, in partnership with Live Nation.

The Live, Loud and Local series aims to support Australia’s hospitality and entertainment industries as well as the local communities hit hard by COVID-19 and related social gathering restrictions. 

Melanie Cooper, Coopers Brewery Director and fifth generation family member, said the brewery wanted to build on the momentum generated by its initial Live, Loud and Local series which became Australia’s biggest virtual pub experience during the national lockdown.

“Our first series was all about bringing the pub experience into Australian lounge rooms so patrons stuck at home could still enjoy a night out on the couch,” Mel said.

“Now we want to help bring great Australian live music back to the stage and encourage people off the couch and into their local pub.

“It’s been a really challenging time for venues, musicians and patrons. Live music is an essential part of our culture as is heading to the local for a social drink with friends. It’s something we’ve all missed. We’re putting together a great series of gigs that will allow fans the chance to see their favourite bands perform live again and support local venues in a socially responsible way.”

Live Nation’s President of Brand and Marketing Partnerships for Australia and New Zealand, Greg Segal said Live Nation was excited to be working with Coopers again. 

“Coopers is demonstrating a real commitment to supporting local artists and venues, via the Live, Loud and Local series. The industry couldn’t ask for a better partner during these challenging times,” Greg said.

Miles Wilson, the drummer of Bad//Dreems, said the band was pumped to be playing the Live, Loud and Local series in Adelaide.

“Like an early Elliott Smith song, 2020 has been sad and haunting,” Miles said.

“We’ve really missed the atmosphere of playing live and we’ll be approaching the gig with a sense of anticipation and fantasy.”

Trent Fahey, Operations Manager, The Bridgeway Hotel said the venue was looking forward to the resurgence of live music in 2021.

“The Bridgeway is a South Australian rock n’ roll institution, with more than 50 years of live music history and some of the biggest national and international artists having hit our stage,” Trent said.

“South Australians love live music and have supported us on every step of the road back.”

For Perth-via-Busselton trio Pretty Uglys, 2020 remained a fairly fruitful year even though the party/live music opportunities elsewhere around the country came to a screeching halt. Out on the West Coast, the band dedicated the year to the preparation of their forthcoming EP Party Friends, releasing two tracks in ‘Soak It Up’ and ‘Dreamland Delusion’ – both further establishing the band as one to watch.

And now, as 2021 kicks off with hope, excitement and much anticipation for a return to normal, the Pretty Uglys guys kick this new era off with the EP’s title track, releasing ‘Party Friends’ in January from their forthcoming EP set for release in 2021.

A track that demonstrates the band’s strong dynamic, a love for some classic surf rock influences and a lean further into confident new sounds and lyricism, ‘Party Friends’ is the quintessential Pretty Uglys vibe that that band is charging ahead into the New Year with.

Over 31 summer nights from 15 January to 14 February 2021, Triennial EXTRA will present a FREE festival of performance, music, food and bars, and late-night access to NGV Triennial every night between 5-9pm. NGV will collaborate with award-winning chef Adam D’Sylva from Melbourne restaurant Tonka on a pop-up in NGV’s Garden Restaurant featuring outdoor dining. Known for Tonka’s modern Indian cuisine, the pop-up restaurant will feature an exclusive menu designed especially for the festival.

During Triennial EXTRA visitors will be able to dine at the Tonka pop-up restaurant along with culinary experiences across NGV International including Lune Croissanterie’s bespoke pastry inspired by Melbourne designers Makiko Ryujin and Michael Gittings’ Triennial installation in the NGV Tea Room, a Yering Station Wine Bar also in the Tea Room and an Asahi Bar in the Great Hall.

Playing to a Sold Out and seated 170 Russell on Friday the 18th of December, Didirri mesmerized the Melbourne audience with his enchanting vocals, elegant songwriting and charismatic solo performance playing both acoustic guitar and keyboard.  Didirri carried himself with an oh so loveable honest and modest demeanor whilst capturing the attention of everyone within ears reach with the slightest tone from his soulful voice.  The crowd listened intently to every single song lyric and and every story between each song with huge respect and a noticeable feeling of awe.  Didirri is a young man who has a huge future ahead of him, we are all lucky to be able to witness this talented artist blossom.  Didirri was supported by the eclectic jangle/fuzz singer/songwriter Eaglemont who took the audience on a brutally honest ride of heart felt songs from tales of growing up and being grown up, hats off to the both of you.
