In support of Her, the just-released album from Melbourne’s Totally Mild, the band have shared a video for their single ‘From One Another‘. The video debuted via Culture Collide who note, “the interplay of chiming guitars and Mitchell’s soothing voice brings a hypnotic quality to the song: it’s easy to lose yourself in ‘From One Another’, as the lush composition blurs the lines between verse, chorus, and bridge.”

‘From One Another’ was directed by Tobias Willis of KEWL Studios and he notes, “this clip, considered follow on from the previous for ‘Today Tonight‘, is drawing Liz’s character to a subtle close. As with the other clips we were aiming to keep the video in a more cinematic space and were referencing some of those classic one takes from 60’s & 70’s cinema. Throughout the tracking shot each character vignette has it’s own story exploring themes of loneliness, faith and friendship.” IndieShuffle have called the track “a sticky sweet indie pop gem that’s lush with infectious chords and vocals.”

Following an Australian tour with Perfume Genius, Totally Mild will be making their way to the US for slots at SXSW before coming home for a national album tour in May. Dates below.

TOTALLY MILD SHARE VIDEO FOR “LUCKY STARS” HERE

NEW ALBUM HER SET FOR RELEASE FEBRUARY 23, 2018 STREAM NOW!

Today, the Melbourne lush pop quartet Totally Mild are pleased to share a music video for “Lucky Stars“. The clip, which features a live, in studio performance of the song by the group’s Elizabeth Mitchell, was directed by Tobias Willis, with production by KEWL. The band told Brooklyn Vegan “‘Lucky Stars’ is an exercise in intimate voyeurism, a momentary glimpse into the world of this woman as she plays a love song and hopes someone will hear it. A live performance that continues the character arc begun with the ‘Today Tonight’ video.“ Brooklyn Vegan calls the song “…delicate, vulnerable and absolutely lovely.” Watch the video here:

“Lucky Stars” is taken from the band’s upcoming sophomore album, Her, which will be released via Chapter Music on February 23, 2018. The band first shared the single “Today Tonight” and Brooklyn Vegan labeled the band “charming” and Austin Town Hall called the track “super impressive” further noting “I’m reveling in the fact that it employs these little guitar stabs that recall early days in the jangle scene; they do move on in a dreamier style, complimented by Elizabeth Mitchell’s sultry delivery.”  The UK’s Clash said the band “match off kilter guitars to some striking melodies, and fascinating lyricism.” Totally Mild will be coming stateside for SXSW and other select shows in March, which will be announced soon, but before that, they’ll be supportingPerfume Genius in Australia. Dates below:

2nd March – Perfume Genius Sydney Show, The Factory Theatre

9th March – Perfume Genius Melbourne Show, Melbourne Recital Centre

Pitchfork have called Totally Mild “a shining talisman for the heartbroken” and NPR has described their music as “sweet, harmony-rich, pointedly concise jangle-pop.”

Totally Mild

Her

Totally Mild started out as the solo project of songwriter Elizabeth Mitchell, and has now become a full blown lush pop quartet. Elizabeth’s voice is a thing of unearthly beauty, capable of soaring and swooping in shiver-inducing ways. As a songwriter she is equally arresting, addressing desires and dreams with affecting frankness.

Following on from their acclaimed 2015 debut Down Time,Her is a shining jewel of an album. Elizabeth Mitchell’s voice is a thing of unearthly beauty, capable of soaring and swooping in shiver-inducing ways. As a songwriter she is equally arresting, addressing desires and dreams with affecting frankness.

In Totally Mild she is joined by guitar magician Zachary Schneider, drummer Ashley Bundang and bassist Lehmann Smith. In the last few years the band have developed a quasi-psychic intensity, surging forward or pulling back in seamless unison. This intensity has been captured in crystalline form by producer and one-time Architecture In Helsinki member James Cecil.

Her is polished and spacious, while never losing the feeling of a band in full flight. After Down Time‘s release, Totally Mild toured UK/Europe in 2015, then hit the US in early 2017, playing SXSW and a string of LA/NYC shows. In Australia they have played Meredith Music Festival and shared stages with the likes of Real Estate, Kurt Vile, Best Coast, DIIV and The Chills.

About the new album, Mitchell says “Her is a record of failure and victory, new desire, stale romance, queer domesticity and what comes when the party is over. I was torn between a new domestic life and the impulse to tear it all away with bad choices. I fell in love, but I wrestled for independence. I was always trying to prove that I didn’t need anyone; my wife, my friends, my band. Her is a document of a woman struggling with the idea of potential. We are told that we could be limitless, but we wrestle with unseen personal and structural walls.”

Across their powerful, delicate, luminous second album Her, Totally Mild move through light and shade with silky finesse.

TOTALLY MILD NEW ALBUM HER SET FOR RELEASE FEBRUARY 23, 2018 SHARE VIDEO FOR “TODAY TONIGHT”

by the partae October 13, 2017
written by the partae
Chapter is thrilled to be releasing Her, the second album by Melbourne lush pop quartet Totally Mild, on February 23, 2018.  Today sees the band sharing the breathtaking video for lead single “Today Tonight” (directed by Tobias Willis).   It debuted via the UK’s  Clash, who wrote, “led by Elizabeth Mitchell, the Australian quartet match off kilter guitars to some striking melodies, and fascinating lyricism.”

The band’s Elizabeth Mitchell said of the single “Today Tonight“; “Written during a long period of unemployment, ‘Today Tonight’ is quite literally me passing the days waiting for my girlfriend to come home from work. Sinking into the kind of depression that comes from doing nothing when you have the time to do whatever you want, the guilt of unproductivity. The house becomes a trap, you’re not interesting enough to leave it anyway. The video by Tobias Willis plays on the theme of faded glamour and isolation, drawing inspiration from films like Sunset Boulevard and A Woman Under the Influence.”
Video director, Tobias Willis, explains further; “After hearing the track and the initial concepts from the band I was thrilled when I was approached to make the video. I really enjoy any opportunity to incorporate that classic Hollywood cinema aesthetic into my work, films from that era are some of my favourites.”  Watch “Today Tonight”:
