After an abrupt stop and a long pause, Moreland City Council is gearing up to hit play on Brunswick Music Festival again in March 2021. Things are going to look, feel and potentially sound, different. This is the new normal after all, but it’s the re-imagining that makes it so exciting. So, where to from here?
To accomodate for COVID-19 restrictions, the BMF team will be keeping things as flexible as possible while still finding ways to deliver special collaborations and events and fantastic opportunities for local artists, venues and audiences – dedicated and excited to bring the relief of live music to you in whichever way they can.
Since the needle skipped on this year’s event, the world as we know it has been turned upside down. Now more than ever, music feels essential and the tenets that Brunswick Music Festival is built on – neighbourhood and community, inclusivity, diversity and sustainability along with creating a sense of place and safe spaces – seem less like ideals and more like non-negotiables.
With the confinement cultivating a hotbed of creativity, the BMF team are keen to pick up what you want to put down by providing a platform for your audacious ideas, born under the cover of isolation, to be liberated through presentation in their next festival.
They want to work with you to realise your multifaceted, music-based vision in a special one-of-a-kind festival show, in all its boldness and daring, as it speaks to the new world we find ourselves living in.
They also want to hear from musicians, music groups, bands, ensembles or venues in the Brunswick area, who wants to be involved in the 2021 festival.
Local legend and champion of the music community Emily Ulman will once again take charge of expertly crafting the 2021 program, which is set to comprise a collective exhale, a healthy dose of togetherness, a huge cup of joy and some really, really, really great live music experiences.

Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer, Chelsea Warner unveils her sassy new single ‘Back On My Bullshit’ today.
Since releasing her debut single ‘How Come You Don’t Pick Up Your Phone’ in April, Chelsea has been busy writing and producing music with some of her contemporaries: Emalia, Nardean, Sarah Wolfe, Sarah Saint James, Bri Clark, Doolie, Charlotte Adelle, Jesabel, and SKŸE – who is also managed by Right Hand Management (Michael Parisi).
Speaking about her new single today, Chelsea says “Back On My Bullshit’ is a track about being unapologetically selfish in the name of putting yourself first – without worrying about ramifications. It represents a shift in focus from over-investing in others, to putting that energy back into yourself. This song is for every recovering people pleaser. Despite being unashamedly problematic, it is all for seeking the finer things in life by chasing only self-fulfilment.”
The 90’s pop/R&B feel is reminiscent of early Britney hits, while Sumatra’s dynamic modern hip-hop inspired production brings it into 2020. Swirly synths and sub-bass combine to form a track that, with a feature from up-and-coming Sydney rapper Zyad, is mercilessly self-indulgent.
Praise for Chelsea Warner:
“The vocals are mint! The keys glide so nice like. This was already a huge mood even before Chelsea put Kevin’s bass beneath it”. Dave Ruby Howe, triple j
“Enjoying this first serving from Chelsea and milan ring fans might find something here!” Declan Byrne, triple j
“With a single like How Come You Don’t Pick Up Your Phone behind her, it’s clear that Chelsea Warner is on the cusp of something special. She’s excited to show the world her strengths in songwriting and with a debut EP teasingly on the way, it sounds like this will be Chelsea’s year.” Pilerats

After releasing a track a month from their staggered EP titled ‘Collaborations of Very Isolated Delinquents “19’, Gold Coast-based party starters Bootleg Rascal have just unveiled the capstone in final track ‘Falling Star’ featuring Saint Lane – produced by the band themselves, Ian Pritchett (Boo Seeka, Kim Churchill, Angus and Julia Stone), and Simon Dobson (Little May, STUPID BABY).
‘Falling Star’ is a slow burning slice of sophisticated hip hop that maintains an unwavering beat and groove throughout its entirety. The track features rising stars Saint Lane on the second verse with his effortlessly executed cadences, and A.GIRL on back-up vocals with her smooth and sultry brand of R&B.
“We’re stoked to finally work with some of our good friends Lane and Angel,” says frontman Carlos Lara. “’Falling Star’ is one of our favourite tracks from the record, so to have them come in and lay down their parts is really special to us. The track itself is a metaphor I coined for when you’re smitten by someone you’ve just met, but it eventually all just fizzles out. I’m a hopeless romantic, so if I meet someone I click with, I like to start exploring whether there’s a legit connection or not. Sadly, sometimes the more you get to know the person, you realise they’re not right for you. Just like a falling star, it’s beautiful and exciting, but over really quickly.” He continues.
Gold Coast-based New Zealand born rapper Saint Lane burst onto the scene in 2019, picking up praise from the likes of triple j, The Needle Drop, NME, The Guardian, GQ, Billboard and Beats 1 with Briggs. He’s also traversed the country, sharing stages with Lime Cordiale, JID and Bootleg Rascal.
Since their mid-2013 inception, Bootleg Rascal have released a slew of singles, an EP and two albums, all warmly received by critics and fans around the world, with support from the likes of NME, The Line of Best Fit, Clash Magazine, Pilerats and Wonderland Magazine. Multiple tracks have been added to Spotify and Apple Music playlists, high rotation on triple j and they’ve performed on the station’s esteemed ‘Like a Version’ segment.
The band have continually traversed the globe playing multiple sold out headline shows in France, UK, Holland, Germany, New Zealand and Australia, and performed sold out shows in the USA. They’ve also regularly appeared on major Australian festivals including Falls Festival, The Big Pineapple Festival, Lost Paradise, Hills are Alive, Festival of the Sun and Party in the Paddock.

And The Animal is Niki and Gori. Two creatures from a different dimension that create music and through their spells make a group of humans play it. They have a pet called KATA that gives them potions for inspiration. The 6 tracks on ‘Zinko’ are an eclectic journey packed with electronic, groovy and powerful beats.
“Zinko definitely presents a different color in our music, compared to what we have done in the past. Our music has always been very eclectic, as we merge different genres and use instruments that are uncommon in electronic music. Most of our past albums have always been on the darker side. This time we decided to go in a different direction and the timing to do that was just perfect. Elianne Nascimento, an amazing and very talented singer from Brazil, joined And The Animal as we were writing this album. We realized how versatile she was and how much power and soul her voice had. We had been thinking of creating something more funky and summery and she just brought the last element we needed to accomplish that.”
Zinko opens with ‘Dragonfly’, an electro-pop banger that immediately captivates the listener. The release’s tunes travel through hip hop beats, house and EDM tones, plus a very cinematic-action-like element that the band experimented with. “We added a horn section in one of our songs (Out Of My Head), which infused a very unique ‘oh wow’ element to it.” The release is meant to sync in perfectly with a summer lifestyle. Zinko is effortlessly warm and sunny electric music, slinking between the groovy sounds of ‘Persia’ to a trip to ‘Neon Skies’. It all makes you feel like a million dollars.
For the single ‘Moonlight’, which came out in the spring, And The Animal collaborated with Chicago rapper D.tha.G.. “He brought his very own west coast hip hop style that makes this song a summer must listen. This single is also included in his newly released EP. The idea behind doing this tune was that it would be a good way to transition to our new EP, Zinko, which would be different from what we have done before.”
And The Animal’s live shows are a very sensorial experience. Their dreamy and dancy tunes going along with magical visuals flooding the stage, make it a must see show.
“Wonderful songwriting that is both aggressive and tender.” – Tone Deaf
“They’ve transformed and blossomed into something remarkably special.” – Pilerats
“Taking the high bar the Perth four-piece set for themselves in 2019 and shattering it with an
emotional blast.” – Scenezine
Indie rock outfit Sly Withers might still be Australia’s best kept secret, but the word looks set to explode on the Perth four-piece with the release of their brand-new single and video today – ‘Cracks.’
Arriving as the first single from their forthcoming new album, ‘Cracks’ showcases the sonic and songwriting dynamics ofa band really stepping into their own, as co-frontmen Sam Blitvich and Jono Mata trade lead vocals through a song that’s bursting with the energy and emotion that has become their trademark. ‘Cracks’ premiered this week on triple j’s Good Nights program, continuing the outstanding support the band has had from the national youth broadcaster.
“I think the understanding between the two of us is ever-growing,” says Blitvich of his relationship writing and singing alongside Mata. “I really like the way we’re sharing songs – both doing lead vocals in certain sections. And for ‘Cracks’ Jono wrote a bridge for it off a little melodic idea I had and then on a plane ride back from over east one time I wrote a bridge for it without knowing he’d already written one. That’s how ‘Cracks’ kind of came together. Those kind of things have been really cool to get more in sync with each other in a way that we’ve always strived to do.”
Produced by Matt Templeman (Make Them Suffer – Worlds Apart) ‘Cracks’ highlights the massive step up in production the band has made since the recording of their breakout EP, 2019’s Gravis, with Blitvich explaining they have a much greater sense of who they are in the studio thanks to, “Temp’s help.”
“I feel like we’ve really fine tuned into exactly what the best possible process is for us. We’ve refined how our studio process works between Jono and I, and between us and Temp.”
The single’s release also comes with a brand-new video that was premiered by the excellent taste purveyors at Pilerats. Made during the COVID restrictions, the socially-distanced clip is undeniably clever in its use of scenery, space and scene edits, bringing an impression of what one of the band member’s dads described as like being a physical representation of a Zoom meeting.
“We had no background idea to the video other than like, ‘Let’s have some backgrounds and move them around’,” says Mata. “But the first time Joel [Neubecker, SW drummer] showed his dad, he was like “Oh it’s like a Zoom call, isn’t it?!”

Toronto based DJ and producer Velvet Code launched his very own label SO FIERCE MUSIC, taking a stand for equality, diversity, and creativity. The imprint wants to give artists a voice and platform, no matter their age, race, gender, or sexual identity.
Velvet Code has been active in the music industry for over 20 years and experienced how difficult it can be for LGBTQ+ artists to be seen and heard. “Music executives, former managers, and agents tried to muzzle or tried to force me to play “straight”. I was convinced for years that I had to if I wanted any chance the mainstream music industry was going to pay attention. Well, I refuse to live a lie or change who I am just to please anyone. I was born this way, baby! My hope is that SO FIERCE MUSIC will give people a platform and safe space where an LGBTQ2+ artist or ally can express themselves while gaining an opportunity to make a living from a music career.”
The first release on the label is set for September 25th with the supreme Sofonda Cox. The immensely talented drag queen worked together with Velvet Code on her brand-new track ‘Thrive’. Sofonda has been chosen as TD Bank’s pride ambassador for many years in a row, performs annually at the Toronto Pride PRISM festival, and at clubs across the US, Brazil, Malaysia, and Mexico. A true inspiration and the perfect artist to kick off the musical vision of the label.
For each release, SO FIERCE MUSIC will unleash a special merch line. Designed by Velvet Code and his team, the assets will consist of clack fans, shirts, tops, and hoodies.

PLS&TY becomes a frontrunner in the connection between music and technology by partnering with Ethereum blockchain platform Foundation to sell a limited quantity of his “Very Special” EP on vinyl. The EP was released digitally in April and features four tracks, with collaborations from Sean Kingston, Alex Aiono, Wifisfuneral, to name a few. Foundation‘s mission is to serve as a stock exchange for art and culture, which allows the market’s natural supply and demand dictate the price of the goods sold on the platform; this dynamic pricing model lets artists benefit directly from the hype that surrounds their work. If you’re already anxious for a copy of “Very Special” on vinyl, you’ll need to get your hands on a $PECIAL digital token. Early buyers will secure a better price. When the vinyl is ready to ship, the tokens will be redeemable to receive the physical vinyl anywhere in the world; alternatively, token holders can continue to keep the digital value of the token or trade it in the Foundation market. The intersection of music with blockchain is an exciting glimpse into the future of the industry, and PLS&TY is the first musician to dive right in. Stay in the know by following PLS&TY and Foundation.
“Foundation is an exciting new platform for creators that allows artists like me to realize the true value of our work and benefit directly from the hype that surrounds it. For a lot of people, crypto might feel inaccessible or complicated, but Foundation has built a streamlined process of buying and selling tokenized goods that puts the power in the hands of artists and our communities. Get in now, Be a part of something transformative. You’ll thank me later.” – PLS&TY

Today Death Bells share ‘A Different Kind of Happy‘, a track celebrating small moments of ‘bliss and pure satisfaction’. The duo’s new album New Signs of Life is due 25th September via Dais Records, pre-order here: https://n-s-o-l.com/
The song’s freeing, gossamer guitars, inspired by Cleaners From Venus, lift the track to celestial heights, with the earnest vocals affirming “Despite the uncertainty of life, I wouldn’t give, I wouldn’t give up“. The track celebrates the fleeting moments when you feel totally at peace, the band twisting their usual darkly atmospheric sound to shimmer and shine.
The band explain the track: “This song conveys a feeling of bliss. It was written last year – there were a couple of fleeting moments where everything felt like it was in it’s right place. It was awesome. Obviously times are different now but we still have a lot to be thankful for, and our optimism remains intact.”
Watch the video for ‘A Different Kind Of Happy’ HERE
Death Bells is the longtime musical collaboration between Will Canning and Remy Veselis. Formed in 2015 during their late adolescent years in Sydney, Australia, the act has proven to be a mainstay in the alternative underground musical landscape both in their homeland and overseas during their five-year history. Blurring the lines of post-punk and garage rock, Death Bells has morphed and transformed as the two members have grown up throughout their late teenage years living together into early adulthood. With Canning’s distinctive baritone and the kinetic collection of reverb-drenched leads by Veselis being a constant during their musical output, the two made the permanent move 7,000 miles away to Los Angeles, California in 2018 where the current incarnation of Death Bells has blossomed.
Following the releases of their debut E.P, much-loved first album, and seven-inch single on Funeral Party Records and their 2019 single on Metropolitan Indian, Death Bells have joined the Dais Records family for their highly anticipated sophomore album New Signs of Life. Three years in the making, the release sees the act embrace their diverse tastes to deliver unforgettable hooks and more expansive sounds across its nine graceful songs.
Engineered and mixed under the attentive eye of Colin Knight at Paradise Studios throughout mid-to-late 2019, New Signs of Life is the band’s most complete work to date. Along with classic Death Bells brooding romanticism, the themes of the record divulge personal insight into their move across the world and both the strained and new relationships that have materialised throughout their existence. Slated for release on September 25th, New Signs of Life is as advertised – it is the career-defining new chapter to commence the new decade.
