In March, Vundabar will release their fourth album, Either Light, on their own Gawk Records. “The album is about the transitional lightness that follows a period of heaviness” singer/guitarist Brandon Hagen explains, “After years of being caught up in a dark period marked by sickness, strife and worry, and using it as the context in which I saw myself, I suddenly found I'd outgrown that story. With that came a feeling of lightness that was opposite the feeling which preceded it.” The album’s title refers to that duality - “light” is used as a descriptor for the weight of feeling, the quality of illumination that frames that feeling and the spectrum that spans both. The songs themselves contain numerous symbols that are key to understanding the album’s central theme. There is an acknowledgement of awful circumstances, an acceptance of them, and the decision to move forward regardless. It’s a universal trope that rings especially true at this point in history. Cars, water and even Tony Soprano feature in the lyrics, each imbued with their own meaning relevant to Either Light’s themes. The paradox of being willfully doomed, which is arguable uniquely American, is embodied in Tony Soprano. Cars and driving appear continually in the lyrics, as songwriter Brandon Hagen explores the idea of being along for the ride, where the passenger isn’t necessarily in control. While writing the record, Hagen went swimming each day in a lake by his home. He was often struck by the relationship between light and water - how water divorces light from its source. The mysterious nature of refracted light and the sense of confusion it causes plays into the themes of the album as well as begs the question - from where and what? For Either Light, Vundabar worked with producer Patrick Hyland (producer for Mitski's Be the Cowboy, Puberty 2, Bury Me at Makeout Creek). It makes the first time they have ever had someone produce one of their albums. Their original bass player, Zackery Abramo, re-joined the group to play on the record, and Emily Massey from Slow Pulp contributed backing vocals. While in the past Vundabar’s recording process has always been very self contained, this album is notable for having had more people collaborating than ever before. Recorded at Gradwell House and Retro City Studios, Vundabar came in with the song skeletons and built out the arrangements in the studio. The difference is apparent and there are a host of new sounds on Either Light, including a sequencer, vibraphone, synth, drum machines, and more layered vocals than ever before.$

Her sound is a cross-pollination of Italo-cosmic house and techno, which quickly landed her a debut release on Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings. Since then, she has released on other world-renowned labels including Correspondant, Permanent Vacation and Phantasy. She also set up the Clash Lion imprint, alongside Shall Ocin and Daniel Watts. The label broke through instantly with the first release being a new production from Maceo Plex’s side project Maetrik. Recently, Caldellas has created a string of releases, alongside being signed to Berlin-based agency Temporary Secretary, home of Dixon, Gerd Janson and Ame. Alongside an already booked out and eventful year for Terr, she will be coming to Australian shores, playing this year’s fourth edition of Pitch Music & Arts. Terr’s impressive talent is constantly driving to emulate herself as a name to remember. Starting her early years playing in punk bands, guitars were her medium of sound production. At 19, she asked her friends to teach her the basics of “computer music”, quickly unravelling a previously unknown infatuation with electronic production, and the rest is history. Spending 12 months researching and learning new production techniques, plus investing in analog gear, she quickly was known as a “studio freak” and was ready to once again rock the world, though in another way. Her first solo project was born in 2016 which is when she called herself ‘Terr’, inspired by the 1970’s film “Fantastic Planet” where ‘Terr’ is the name of the main human character. Terr’s unique sound and talent made her debut release, a three-track EP titled Burn the Past on Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings, felt like a progression that was only natural. Established in 2017, Caldellas own label Clash Lion, is a mix of three personalities where together with Shall Ocin and Daniel Watts, they combine their different backgrounds and merge forces to create an open-minded label. The label broke through instantly with its first EP Maetrik, a Maceo Plex's side project witnessing a resurgence in a number of years, aptly named as ‘Return’. Sleaford Mods are set to continue their onslaught into 2020 with the release of All That Glue, a collection of songs spanning the last seven years of the bands career; an array of crowd pleasers, B sides, unheard tracks and rarities for fans and the curious, released via Rough Trade / Remote Control Records.

Over the past few years Sleaford Mods have become one of the most intractable British pop stories. One of its best. Their music is drawn at a flawless fault-line of anger, tenderness and humour, a triumvirate of raw energy which frequently jostles in the space of a cadence for supremacy. Ahead of All That Glue’s release the band will be making available fan favourite Jobseeker for the first time. In addition, footage from the duo’s acclaimed sell out show last year at the Eventim Apollo, will be released for the first time and kicks off with an incendiary performance of ‘Tweet Tweet Tweet’, which will be available to watch on the band’s YouTube channel. To mark the release of All That Glue, Sleaford Mods have consented to a no-holds-barred inquisition from their fans, friends and enemies. Kicking off tomorrow, Sleaford Mods will embark on their first ever Australian tour, a playing a 10-date run of headline dates and festivals including Farmer & The Owl, Golden Plains, WOMADadelaide & A Festival Called Panama. Khruangbin are the Texan Thai-funk trio who have become cult favourites in recent years. Legendary group The Cinematic Orchestra have been merging electronic music and cinematic soundscapes for decades. Cross the Tracks aims to build action, change and partnerships in climate, carbon, local causes and air pollution.

The positive policy recognises that the entertainment industry could do more towards the climate, carbon and air pollution. Cross the Tracks is going to look at how and what changes can be made at the festival over the next 3 years to make a positive change. They hope to find solutions that can make them carbon neutral, give support to local causes and not create any air pollution.

Each year Cross the Tracks will conduct a study with help from experts in the areas of climate, carbon and air pollution on what can be better, and look at steps to achieve this. They will build a report and share what has been achieved each year and what could be better for the following year. The reports will be open-sourced, allowing our learnings, research and methods to be shared across the entertainment industry.

Cross the Tracks has already committed to bury zero waste in the landfill sites and leave no trace of litter. They have banned single-use plastic, will only allow compostable packaging and cutlery onsite, all traders and back of house waste will be recycled and the stage effects will be biodegradable. This is just the beginning of the process and over the next 3 years, Cross the Tracks will be making more and more changes.

The Cross the Tracks Positive Policy is open to good ideas, technology breakthrough, clever insight and help from the people who also recognise that we all must change now.

With the 22nd annual Ultra Music Festival less than a month away, the Phase 3 lineup has been revealed, along with each stage’s daily chronological programming.

New additions include David Guetta’s underground alias Jack Back making his North American festival debut following the project’s 2018 relaunch, Ultra’s first proper hardstyle booking of Belgian powerhouse producer Coone, chart-topping, party-starter beatmaker Baauer, indie-electronic sound sculptor TOKiMONSTA, and singer-songwriter-producer triple-threat CRAY.

Both Revealed Recordings and A State Of Trance will be celebrating major decade milestones, with Revealed hitting its ten-year mark since the label launched, and A State Of Trance returning to the festival for its tenth consecutive Ultra showcase. Friday night will see ten Revealed Recordings artists playing back-to-back for a massive closing performance, and Saturday evening will be rounded out with a special collaborative set from a myriad of ASOT flag-bearers.

In addition to these new artist announcements, Ultra has also unveiled the day-by-day lineup for the festival’s six stages. The Ultra Main Stage is stacked with genre-crossing performances that range from the hard-hitting sounds of Martin Garrix and Afrojack, and trance offerings from Above & Beyond and Armin van Buuren, to sunset sets from Kygo and FISHER, and house stylings from Tchami and Oliver Heldens, capped off by stadium-smashing closing shows from Major Lazer, DJ Snake and David Guetta, respectively.

The Live Stage will play host to a plethora of dynamic performances, including Grammy award-winning Flume making his Ultra debut while he closes out the entire festival with an avant-garde showcase of drums, synths and a myriad of other instruments. Revered prince of darkness Gesaffelstein will close out the stage on Saturday, marking his first Miami performance since debuting his Vantablack VBx2 live show this spring which creates an illusion of infinite depth and blackness. Friday evening will be rounded out by Zedd presents The Orbit, which will see the three-time Grammy award-winner perform on an LED-backed orbiting structure that revolves on all sides of the producer.

The Ultra Worldwide Stage will kick off on Friday with a bass-in-your-face run of programming, featuring Jauz B2B NGHTMRE, Snails B2B Kill The Noise, Borgore, and more. Saturday’s ASOT showcase will celebrate a decade at the festival with sets from artists like Gareth Emery, in his first ASOT appearance since 2013, Tritonal, in their first ASOT appearance since 2013, Andrew Rayel, Aly & Fila, Ilan Bluestone and many more of Armin van Buuren’s trance cohorts. Sunday will see Malaa and DJ Snake close the festival with their first announced B2B of 2020, as well as sets from SLANDER B2B Kayzo, Space Jesus, Andy C and more.

The UMF Radio Stage will host three impressive label takeovers; Friday belongs to Revealed Recordings and will feature sets from Maddix, Deorro, and Mike Williams B2B Surprise Guest, Saturday will see STMPD RCRDS artists including Lost Frequencies, Matisse & Sadko B2B DubVision, and a surprise closing performance. While Sunday’s inaugural Gud Vibrations stage takeover will feature sets from Baauer, Subtronics, Peekaboo, 1788-L and many more.

Carl Cox has been curating his own stage at Ultra Music Festival since 2005, and this year his iconic RESISTANCE MegaStructure will expand to take place over all three days of the festival for the first time ever at Bayfront Park. Each night, Carl Cox will close out the festivities; on Friday as a B2B with Maceo Plex, on Saturday as a B3B alongside Jamie Jones and The Martinez Brothers, and on Sunday as a solo performance. Techno and house heavyweights including Richie Hawtin, Tale of Us, Adam Beyer ◻︎ Cirez D, Loco Dice, and Amelie Lens, who will be making her Ultra Music Festival debut, are only a few of many names that comprise the MegaStructure’s massive lineup.

RESISTANCE will also present a brand-new stage dubbed “The Cove” because of its unique waterfront positioning with Biscayne Bay to the east and Biscayne Boulevard to the west. This new stage, nestled perfectly under the palm trees in the heart of Downtown Miami, will capture the vibe and spirit of Resistance Island, and feature performances from the likes of Solardo, Pan-Pot, ARTBAT, CamelPhat, Reinier Zonneveld (LIVE) and Matador.

Gengahr’s third full-length album Sanctuary is out now!

Having just wrapped up their sold-out UK tour, Gengahr are gearing up to kick off their Australian and New Zealand tour next month. With the tour just weeks away, Gengahr today have announced that special guests Green Buzzard will join them in Sydney, with Merpire sharing the stage in Melbourne.

Green Buzzard is the solo project of Sydney musician Paddy Harrowsmith. Across two EPs – 2016’s Eazy, Queezy, Squeezy and 2017’s Space Man Rodeo – and his debut 2019 record Admist the Clutter & Mess, Green Buzzard has melded hooky melodies, fuzzed-out guitars, soaring lead lines and propulsive, almost drum-machine like beats into a sound all his own.

From emotional rollercoasters to fully immersive, indie-rock arrangements, Merpire is the musical brainchild of Riannon Atkinson-Howatt. Conjuring magical moments in both the studio and on stage, Merpire and her predominantly female line-up have supported the likes of Julia Jacklin, Last Dinosaurs, Angie McMahon and Didirri, and entranced crowds at Bigsound, A Festival Called PANAMA and By The Meadow. Merpire will release the next single from her debut album, ‘Heavy Feeling’, this Friday (27 February).

Gengahr released their third full-length album Sanctuary last month. The album was hailed by music press, with triple j choosing it as their Feature Album, Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1 making it his Album For The Weekend, and BBC 6Music featuring it as their Album Of The Day. Amongst these many accolades, Danny Ward from Gengahr has been crowned as having the Sexiest/Smoothest Voice from Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1’s The Saunders Awards.

Sanctuary features the single ‘Heavenly Maybe’, which is on rotation at triple j, is A-listed at BBC 6 Music, playlisted at BBC Radio 1, and was Greg James’ Tune Of The Week on Radio 1’s Breakfast Show. DIY called the track “a pleasing slice of indie-pop”; and Clash “an ultra-infectious new synth jammer”. The single reached #28 in Spotify’s UK Viral Chart.
