Stray From The Path Share Official Video For ‘Neighbourhood Watch’

by the partae November 18, 2022
written by the partae

Fresh off releasing their tenth studio album Euthanasia earlier this year, Stray From The Path are closing out 2022 in style with a brand new music video for the track Neighbourhood Watch out today.

Featuring live footage of the band in action, the music video for Neighbourhood Watch perfectly complements the track’s spitfire Rage Against The Machine-esque energy, chugs and ferocious soundscapes.

Euthanasia is the darkest and heaviest work so far from Stray From The Path, drawing on challenging circumstances to create a record that pulls no punches sonically or lyrically. The album (which has drawn early attention from the likes of Revolver Magazine, BrooklynVegan, Alternative Press, Guitar World and many more), pushes Stray From The Path‘s signature blend of groove and aggression into adventurous and ominous new territory, proving that the long-running group are just as fiery as ever.

Stray From The Path have been bringing their charged-up hardcore fury and politically outspoken lyricism to the masses for the better part of two decades, aiming to be the kind of band that can be a gateway to both heavy music and radical ideas. While the long-running group shows no signs of slowing down, Euthanasia was by no means an easy record to make. Stray From The Path found themselves in a fractured state due to the pandemic, an ocean of distance, and even a literal broken back, resulting in an album that reflects the grimmer personal and global circumstances. Produced/engineered by Will Putney (Knocked Loose, Body Count, Every Time I Die), Euthanasia is clearly the work of a more weathered and visceral era of Stray From The Path–the tremendous riffs and hip-hop-meets-hardcore vocal cadences are still there, but this time they’re accompanied by an apocalyptic mood that draws the listener in and doesn’t let go.

Just over a week to go and Victoria’s new day-long festival, First & Forever, is almost here! Get in quick – final tickets are on sale now at firstandforever.com.au. Artists will play short, uninterrupted sets and collaborate on the festival’s single, main stage – the ‘Uncle Archie’ stage.

What’s more, Briggs is thrilled to announce three more artists added to the bill:

Mo’Ju (Wiradjuri) is chameleonic. They shapeshift between albums, often several times within the same release: jukebox-rattling, ‘50s rock n roller to swinging soul crooner; pop experimentalist to synthesised funk adventurer.

Using sound, movement and filmic techniques, Eric Avery (Ngiyampaa, Gumbangirr, Bandjalang and Yuin) takes a multi-disciplinary approach to pushing music and culture into new formations. Avery will perform throughout the day in support of several artists, as lead violin in the First & Forever house band.

With an ear keenly tuned to the low-end frequencies of club culture, Kalyani (Trawlwoolway) explores dance music from across the globe. She takes a confident and idiosyncratic approach to her sets, which can traverse bass-heavy genres including booty bass and trap; or transport audiences with gems of Turkish and Hindi pop rarely heard in clubs this side of the equator.

Special performances by the Djaara Dancers, Djirri Wurundjeri Women’s Dance Group and the Taungurung Choir will lead us into tributes to both Aunty Ruby Hunter and Uncle Archie Roach delivered by Dan Sultan, Paul Kelly, Emma Donovan, Jess Hitchcock and Kardajala Kirridarra.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

Whet your appetite on the day with a wide range of vendors, from local wineries to First Nations owned and operated foodies, such as Blak Brews and Cooee Café. Other vendors include Melbourne Paella Company, Taco Station, Dum and Dumplings, Route 66, Two Fat Indians, The Kaiser’s Sausage and many more. Being a picnic-style event, everyone can bring their own food, in a supermarket sized cooler bag.

As First & Forever is a licensed event, there is no BYO alcohol. All bars will have EFTPOS available for ease on the day.

WHAT TO BRING

Important: for information about what to bring, and what not to bring, please read the FAQS www.firstandforever.com.au/faqs. Bags will be checked upon entry.

“Anyone in the mood for melodramatic love arcs, sparkling indie-rock tones and a rolling chorus that hooks into the crannies of your subconscious so thoroughly you still find yourself humming it on the train several hours later?  Yeah, good. Same.”

“With a big, bold chorus and a killer hook, Neilsen pulls the listener into the drama and intensity of it all.”

A stunning collection of songs that cement her knack for storytelling, Debut EP ‘Suburban Daze’ from Meanjin artist Georgie Neilsen arrives on Nov 18.

Heartbreak, emotional chaos and reclaiming independence – these are the central threads in the fabric of ‘Suburban Daze’. Together with co-writer and close friend Cody McWaters, Georgie Neilsen has crafted a mature body of work that exudes powerful charm, and sees the artist reflect on the past as she moves forward into a new chapter. Neilsen states:

“The EP began with the title track ‘Suburban Daze’ when Cody and I recorded it back in 2019. We didn’t have a definitive idea of what songs were going to be apart of this collection but they make a lot sense together now. What the songs have in common is that they were all written in my old bedroom at my parent’s house when I was in a daze a lot of the time, trying to make sense of who I was meant to be and from being created during that period in my life they hold a genuine amount of vulnerable, grief, passion, growth and understanding.”

Opening with the delicate, stripped-back acoustic gem that is ‘A Day In A Life’, the musician’s vocal prowess already takes hold with full force.

Next, country-leaning guitars and an indie-rock rhythm swell with earnest lyrics to a heartfelt crescendo in ‘Eyes Wide Open’.

The talented songstress and cabaret performer says of the EP’s title track:
“‘Suburban Daze’ is an intrinsic description of the neighbourhood I grew up in from the native flora and fauna to the neighbours arguing around me. This song encapsulates the dichotomy of my teenage life.”

Indie-rock banger ‘The Last Time I Felt Better’ depicts a tale of two people who fall into an addictive romance, while closing track ‘I’m Changing’ is a coming-of-age tale, circling back to the artist’s journey with self-acceptance.

Two singles off Georgie Neilsen’s new EP have already been greeted with rapturous applause and support from Double J, ABC Country, ABC Brisbane, Music Feeds, AAA Backstage, Scenestr, RAW Artists, GC Live, The AU Review, Livewire AU and more.

Neilsen and her band will be launching the EP at Brisbane’s The Brightside on November 20, supported by LAYYLA and Tessa Fleur.

Prepare to be dazzled when the ‘Suburban Daze’ EP drops on Nov 18 from the effortlessly endearing Georgie Neilsen.

UFO Go

by the partae November 18, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We’re based between North Melbourne and Footscray!

How did you first start playing music?
I started my music obsession when I was about three years old and refused to wear any outfit other than a yellow skivvy and black pants, mandating everyone who came to the house be subject to a performance of Big Red Car and Hot Potato. I graduated to a miniature electric guitar at seven, and my first actual proper guitar at twelve, being really loud and emotional ever since. The other two would have pretty similar stories, maybe different outfits though.

What’s been happening recently?
Piero and I moved house together, I bought a pink Telecaster, Dylan and I got carried around by two strong strangers from a Facebook group, my dad got my mum a drone for her birthday, just normal stuff.

Your latest single ‘Way Back When’ will be released on November 16, what or who influenced the sound and songwriting?
Way Back When is definitely influenced by mid-2000s emo and alt rock, with a big riff, a sad chorus you’re meant to loudly sing along with, and a bit of a synth situation in the middle. I was listening to a lot of Saosin when I wrote it, that’s why half the song is 9th chords. The synth bit is really just to hide the key change you’re not meant to notice, so that might be a bit Knights of Cydonia – I think there’s some Killers in there too.

How did you go about writing Way Back When?
It was written by me and my computer, I think in my old very hot bedroom in Glenroy, a few years ago now. I definitely started with the guitar riff and the drum pattern in the verse, and I think it was one of those songs that was completely done by the end of the day.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
The whole album was written/recorded/mixed/produced/mastered by little old me, which hopefully you don’t immediately realise, but you probably do. We recorded the drums in a friend’s little garage studio that they built (shoutout the Reubmeister), and then the rest all in Piero’s and my living room in Coburg. I rented a white P-Bass, got my guitars set up real good and nice, and then we rocked our little hearts out.

How did you approach the recording process?
Whenever we get to recording, there’s already a pretty well produced demo, and we’re just recording good takes of everything with sounds that we’ve picked out. We’re not one of those bands that records all together, though I’d love to brag about something like that. We do one instrument at a time to a sound that goes BICK BOCK BOCK BOCK BICK BOCK BOCK BOCK and it’s strange but at the end it makes a song so that’s pretty good.

How did the concept for the music video come about?
Well let me tell you, there’s no formula for creating such genius ideas as “a car chase but it’s not cars it’s muscley guys carrying us around.” You get an idea like that, you just submit your application to MENSA and let the universe take over. I think my references were the chase from Bullitt and the Sabotage music video.
Where and when did you film and who did you work with?
We had a friend come and help us shoot the video earlier this year, around the industrial bit of Williamstown where you can run on the roads and there aren’t that many people to laugh at you. The script basically wrote itself, until one of the three guys that we hired off a Facebook actor’s group to carry us around couldn’t show up, and we had to improvise a Point Break style conclusion (I think it was for the best, really). Then I edited it together, now I expect the acclaim and trophies to start rolling in.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’m absolutely fanging the new 1975 album, might be their best yet. Also keen on the new Paramore track, waiting for more to drop. Went to see my friend’s band, GOUTS, who were proper heavy with some evil riffs. I just found out about Pushin’ P also and it might be my new favourite song ever. Piero is obsessed with Lil Baby at the minute, for some reason. I got in the car with Dylan and I think I heard My Chem, Sum 41 and All American Rejects so that’s the go there.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
We’ve got our single launch at the Workers Club on the 26th of November, mega keen for that. Dylan’s programmed a whole light show for it, so that’s gonna be pretty sweet. We’ve got one more gig in December supporting some friends’ new band, Trip to Paris. Early next year we’ll be keeping on dropping songs and videos from our new album, ‘May Fear Never Stop You’. I couldn’t be more excited to share those tracks, finally!!

Favourite food and place to hangout?
I gave Piero 3 seconds to answer and he took 8 and said Pizza. Dylan says burrito but he had no time limit. I’m typing this so I have all the time in the world, which is actually a nightmare for me. I’m eating sour worms right now, so right now it’s sour worms. Best place to hang out is a playground at night, all other answers are wrong.

UFO GO release fuzzed-out indie rock gem ‘Way Back When’

by the partae November 18, 2022
written by the partae

Melbourne trio UFO Go are charged and ready to roll with their new single ‘Way Back When’.  Warping and threading alt-rock, emo and 90’s indie influences, the new track is a perfect snapshot of the band’s attitude towards creating unforgettable music. They will be unveiling the track at a single launch and playing tracks from their new album at the Workers Club in Fitzroy at the end of November.

“Emo never dies, it just starts paying rent – Way Back When is a song about the mid-20s angst of coming to terms with who you are, and the death of the ego that makes your teen years and early-20s feel so apocalyptic. We learn to let go and forgive ourselves of the mistakes we made learning to be people, in the hope that we might go to bed one day and not remember the day we called our teacher mum, or the time we told a joke that made somebody cry.”

UFO GO

‘Way Back When’ was recorded at the band’s private home studios in Melbourne with production by Mike Miller (Vocals, Guitar), who has also produced tracks for other Melbourne indie artists: Franco Cozzo, Orange Orange, CLAIM and Error37. “We recorded the drums at a friend’s home studio, and the rest at home (pre-COVID trailblazers much), written/produced/mixed/mastered all by Mike.”

UFO GO

Single Art by: Vickih Jihadiqiswah

Applying the same attitude to their visuals, the eccentric music video to ‘Way Back When’ showcases the band at their most creative. It was filmed in their hometown of  Williamstown, Melbourne and directed by Mike Miller (Vocals, Guitar) with extras from the Melbourne Actors Centre to add some zany comic relief.

WATCH VIDEO

“The video imagines a classic 60s/70s movie car chase, ala Bullitt, though what if cars were people too?? We hired some big strong men from the Melbourne Actors Facebook group to carry us around all day, and I don’t think one of them read the treatment before the day of the shoot – ‘you want me to do WHAT??”  UFO GO

The band will be closing out the year strong and celebrating the release of ‘Way Back When’ at a single launch later this month.“At our single launch at the Workers Club we’ll be playing most of the songs off our new album, May Fear Never Stop You. We’ve developed a set that delivers the experience of the album with interstitial tracks that expand on the themes of the songs, with spoken word segments written alongside the lyrics of the album, and a programmed lighting show to match.”  UFO GO

UFO GO Single Launch

Matinee: Workers Club Fitzroy, Saturday November 26Tickets

Supports: The Stranded, More TBA

UFO Go released their first full length LP ‘nottoogoodthanks’ in 2018, and single ‘Stay‘ in 2021. With over 50K streams on Spotify alone, the young Melbourne trio have performed at the Yarraville Festival and Swan Hill NYE Festival, and supported a swag of Melbourne artists such as: Hanny J (Clowns), Anty (The Bennies), Axe Girl, Franco Cozzo and Mylk.

Their next full length album, ‘May Fear Never Stop You,’ “is an exploration of learning to be comfortable with your failures, your anxieties, and trying to figure out how to stop holding on so tightly.”

Stay tuned for release details!

“‘Unjust Jeans (And Guillotines)’ is the ideal modern-day indie jam with a tip of the nostalgic hat to some classic sounds and vibes”
(AMNplify)

“Jangly, fun, nostalgic, and bloody catchy. You have such a great sound – it sounds like a band who really know who they are. Great stuff!”

“Love that jangle wash! Its ethereal but really dynamic and that rhythm propels this track along so well. Really enjoying this, thanks Staples!”
(Steph Hughes, Triple J) [About ‘Serotonin’]

Stream ‘Everything Will Be Okay’ EP

Jangly guitars, vigorous post-punk basslines and soaring synths combine for the sophomore EP from Meanjin alt-rockers Staples. Titled ‘Everything Will Be Okay’, the record is out on Nov 18.

Packed to the brim with a visceral and vibrant mix of heartfelt vocals, intricate drum grooves and lush soundscapes, Staples elaborate on the EP’s broad subject matter:

“‘Everything Will Be Okay’ explores a spectrum of human emotional experiences, juxtaposing its longing melancholy, fever-dream anxiety and introspective darkness with naïve passion and bittersweet nostalgia.”

‘Normal Life’ is an explosive introduction, diving into melancholic depths layered with cascading polymetric guitars, icy synths and steadfast basslines.

Next, the rhythmic interplay of ‘The Train’ takes hold to mimic the relentless onslaught of anxious thoughts, before ‘Optimist’ pivots to upbeat indie-rock that gently blossoms into cathartic joy.

Providing a feel-good reprieve, the nostalgia-dipped tune ‘Unjust Jeans (and Guillotines)’ energetically inspires a smile, and feels synonymous with festival season.

Taking a bow with the dream-rock moodiness of the final track ‘A Scene of Yesterday’, this EP is a stellar showcase of the band’s talents.

In the lead-up to this EP, Staples have seen support from Hysteria Mag, AMNplify, AAA Backstage, GC Live, idobi radio (US), 4ZZZ, Rebel FM  and more.

Staples are set to spread their good vibrations even higher with their new EP ‘Everything Will Be Okay’ – out on November 18.

DON’T COME MONDAY RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘HANGMAN’

by the partae November 17, 2022
written by the partae

Hailing from Ulverstone in North-West Tasmania, Don’t Come Monday have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the Tasmanian music scene. With humble beginnings in 2015, the band’s new single, ‘Hangman’ will be available on all major streaming platforms from 15th November, 2022, with the music video set for release on 17th November.

‘Hangman’ sees the band expand into contemporary rock and blues territories, utilising gritty and powerful double-tracked vocals, haunting harmonica lines, and foot-stomping riffs. Lyricist Rob Rose speaks about the meaning of the song: “Hangman is about fighting internal battles of dread, doubt, and negativity. It’s about confronting your demons and challenging those perpetual inner voices of anxiety, depression, and fear that can creep in and take over. It’s a dark song about a dark topic, but with a positive and empowering message”.

The music video for the single was shot and edited in Forth, Tasmania by Jala-loka Lewandowski, and directed by Jacob Boote. The video compliments the dark and sombre mood of the track, culminating in an energetic live shot where frontman Rob Rose unmasks, revealing the duality of himself and the ‘hangman’ character before belting out the final refrain with the band, “Hangman hunting me, I don’t want to die!” Co-produced and recorded at Kindred Hall by Andrew Forth, mixed by Russ T. Rokk (Hoodoo Gurus, Rose Tattoo, Midnight Oil, Noiseworks, The Choirboys), and mastered by William

Bowden at King Willy Sound (Gotye, Eskimo Joe, Ballpark Music, The Living End), ‘Hangman’ is 100% Tasmanian-made – from initial conception, through to final stages of audio and video production.

‘Hangman’ is the band’s second single, after independently releasing the controversial and brutally honest ‘Convenience (Will Kill Us)’ from the ‘Hands of Time’ EP in 2020 to widespread positive response.

The band boasts multiple decades of combined musical and performance experience, with prolific songwriter Rob Rose (Thongs and Socks Collective, FOLKUS) on lead vocals, Grant Hearps (Golden Sunbird, Home Brewed Blues, Swell Magnet) on bass, Fintan McCullough (Tessa Lee and The Cold Weather Band, Midnight Messengers) on guitar, and Rick Lovell (Billy Rocket Band, Paradigm, Fireball) on drums. Jack B. Harper contributed the harmonica tracks for “Hangman”.

JOY ORBISON Releases new single ‘2M3 2U’ Out now via XL Recordings

by the partae November 17, 2022
written by the partae

Today Joy Orbison releases his new single ‘2M3 2U’, a catchy and futuristic sounding track that follows previous tracks ‘pinky ring’ and ‘red velve7’ and sees Joy O continue his journey towards the dancefloor.

“I see this one as a bit of a UK take on hyperpop,” says Joy. “But with a bit of bass weight. the vocal part could be a sample of some garbled message of love in Bladerunner or the Fifth Element, and the main riffs had me thinking about the DJ Narrows records we’d play at youth club parties. Interesting top lines seem to be a bit absent in my world these days and I’ve definitely been influenced by contemporary drum & bass and their endless search for the catchiest wobble.”

After another summer of standout performances at the likes of Sonar, Glastonbury Festival, Houghton and All Points East, 2022 also saw Joy Orbison release his take on Jorja Smith’s ‘Rose Rouge’, as well as another collaboration with Overmono. Their joint single ‘Blind Date’ was a “mesmerising dance track” (The Times) that saw both Joy and Overmono rule the dance floor together. Dominating the UK’s dance music scene alone or collaboratively, who knows what 2023 will bring? Like the movies that it references, perhaps ‘2M3 2U’ is a glimpse of the future.

Praise for Joy Orbison – still slipping vol. 1

“Rarely is electronic music so utterly human as on Still Slipping” – Pitchfork

“One of the greatest producers in UK dance music.” – Resident Advisor

“If there was going to be one mixtape we all needed to hear in 2021, it would probably be Joy Orbison’s debut, Still Slipping Vol.1, an aural assimilation of the best of British bass culture.”
– Loud & Quiet

“A Joy Orbison full-length, whether you call it a mixtape or an album, has to be among the most hotly-anticipated ideas in UK dance music writ large.” – Resident Advisor

“Already sounding like one of the albums of the year” – Mixmag

“The second you just change the language to mixtape, a woman’s voice deadpans at the end of sparko, “nobody cares”. It’s a droll bit of irony for a record crafted with such care. still slipping is anything but thrown together – in fact, it’s hard to imagine a more holistically conceived set of tracks. This is a body of work that definitely deserves to be taken seriously.” – CRACK Magazine

“One of the most quietly moving dance music records of the year” – Pitchfork

“To diehard UK clubgoers, a full-length project is something people didn’t necessarily expect or need to hear from Joy Orbison. This is the man behind ‘Ellipsis’, ‘GR Etiquette’ and ‘Hyph Mngo’, for god’s sake. By ignoring all rules and blending UK garage, UK funky, house and dubstep, his impact upon dancefloors is already written. No, with still slipping Vol. 1, O’Grady is letting us know: this is something new.” – The Quietus

“A long-awaited, essential debut” – DJ Mag

“His boldest and most intimate productions to date” – Wire Magazine

YUNG GRAVY
AUSTRALIA X NEW ZEALAND MARVELOUS TOUR
Sydney & Melbourne sold out
Second and final Sydney show added!
Tickets on sale now at secretsounds.com

Yung Gravy has officially sold out the Sydney and Melbourne dates on his wildly anticipated Australian tour in February 2023 – less than a week after tickets going on sale. In response to this huge demand, Secret Sounds and Live Nation are thrilled to add a second and final Sydney show to the tour which will see the hip-hop phenomenon kick off his Australian performances at Enmore Theatre on Thursday 9 February. Tickets to the new date are on sale now via secretsounds.com!

Yung Gravy dropped Marvelous on 28 October via Republic Records. The album was accompanied by his new music video for single ‘Dancing In The Rain’ and ushers in Gravy’s biggest, boldest and best era yet – and we get to see it live!

Yung Gravy released the record’s lead single ‘Betty (Get Money)’ in June 2022, popping off as a generation bridging banger as it reignites the classic chorus (and iconic synths) of Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. Produced by Dillon Francis, Dwilly, and Popnick, the track has already gone Gold in the United States and Canada, in addition to generating over 200 million global streams.

‘Betty (Get Money)’ notably broke out as Yung Gravy’s first Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs Chart and leapt into the Top 30 of the Hot 100, ticking off another first for the rapper. Dominating airwaves both in the US and Australia, the single led to Yung Gravy making his late-night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a performance slot at MTV’s VMAs pre-show.

Alongside these massive releases, Yung Gravy has accelerated his meteoric rise this year with a co-headline tour of the states with Dillon Francis, an opening slot on Limp Bizkit’s arena tour and a series of RIAA certified platinum and gold bangers including: platinum ‘Mr. Clean’, platinum ‘1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot’,  gold ‘oops!!!’ gold ‘Magic’, gold ‘Whip A Tesla’ and ‘Welcome to Chilis’ with bbno$.

Yung Gravy is currently on a 29-city, co-headline tour of North America with bbno$ through December, before reaching Australian shores in February. Tickets are selling fast so jump on the gravy train and get them quick!

Reno Pratma

written by the partae
Where are you currently based?
Bali island, Indonesia.

What’s the music scene like in Bali / Indonesia at the moment?
The music scene in Bali and Indonesia is growing now after the pandemic. Music concerts and festivals have started again. I think its a good start after recovering from the pandemic.

Your latest single is out now, what’s it called?
Just dropped a new single in Bahasa Indonesian language called ‘Aku’ released by Extra Sensorial Productions London-Bali.

What influenced the sound and songwriting?
I think the influence comes from the 50s 60s music

How did you go about writing this track?
I started writing this song alone at first and then I showed it too my good Friend Dave Syauta the vocalist of the Paps Band Bandung and he really liked it and we finish it together.

You have an album coming out in early 2023, please tell us about the songwriting influences:
The influence on the new album is really different from my previous one. The new album is more personal to me and i wrote alot of the songs during the pandemic which have more emotional meaning.

Please tell us about the songwriting process for your new album:
Actually i started writing right before the pandemic while I was still in Melbourne city and then went back to Indonesia and continued writing throughout the pandemic.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
I started recording in Stonedeaf music studio in Bali with my producer Cipta Gunawan and also recorded some songs in Sagala Rumah studio Jakarta shout out to Mang Xonad and all the crew. Also recorder some songs in House Records music studio in Renon Bali.

How did you approach the recording process?
I took my time over two years to record and just kept it fun as usual how music is supposed to be.

What programs/equipment did you use?
Different studios had different programs. Some we used protools some used logic pro and all the analog hardware.

Please tell us a little about what we can expect from this new album and how it’s different from your past releases:
There’s alot of surprises from the music arrangements and the lyrics. Alot more slower tempo songs on this album. Just wait and check it out! Haha

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Im not listening to alot of music at the moment because I’ve been focusing on recording my new album.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
Writing and making alot more new music and skateboarding.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
My favorite food is Indonesian food for sure but depend where I’m at in the moment.

Sarah Burton ‘I Hate Goodbyes’ Premiere

by the partae November 17, 2022
written by the partae
I Hate Goodbyes is a love song, written after the decision to embark in a long-distance relationship with another touring musician. The song was written in the hopeful space of falling in love and feeling like the world will conspire to help you. The subsequent album explores the challenges that come with long-distance love.  Recorded in Sudbury Ontario at Lala Pop Shop amidst the Canadian winter lockdown, the distance was made so much more, well – distant – due to the circumstances of the world, which in fact seemed to conspire against this love.

Recorded and produced by power-pop-rocker Dany Laj, the track (and subsequent album) feature the melodic basslines of fellow Dany Laj and the Looks co-conspirateur, Jeannette Dowling and drums and percussion from Dusty Campbell. Burton’s writing style on this album ranges from classic 90s pop-rock to a more current indie rock, with a little throw-back to the 60s, laced with a touch of the bizarre. With influences that range from Rilo Kiley and Weezer, to Harry Nilsson and a touch of Concrete Blonde, 64 Magic Queen’s is an unfiltered trip through a brain that is hopeful even in the darkest hours.  Laj’s melodic guitar lines complement the songs with grace, walking the line between glossy and gritty, much like Burton’s vocal stylings.

Don’t Come Monday

by the partae November 17, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?
We’re based in Ulverstone, in north-west Tasmania.

How did the band form?
We started playing together in 2015 when Rob Rose (vocals, guitar) approached Grant Hearps (bass) and Fin McCullough (guitar) looking to form a band to focus predominantly on original music. Rick Lovell took up the throne behind the drums in 2019.

What’s been happening recently?
Since recording/shooting ‘Hangman’ we’ve been continuing to write new songs and playing a couple of gigs a month including at some new venues, which has been nice.

Your latest single ‘Hangman’ will be out on the 15th of November 2022, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
Hangman is probably the ‘heaviest’ tune we’ve written to date. We’re always striving to write songs that don’t sound like our other songs. This one came out as a gritty, dirty, raw blues rock tune.

How did you go about writing Hangman?
Rob (lyricist) and Fin devised a sketch of what became the ‘A part’ of the song during an acoustic songwriting session. Fin had tuned his guitar down to open D tuning to allow the vocals to be performed in a lower register. This sketch was tweaked and developed upon with the band, and we subsequently decided to make it a 2-part song with a more lively and riff-based outro with a repeated vocal hook as the ‘B part”.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
We recorded the track with co-producer Andrew Forth at Kindred Hall in NW Tassie in November ’21, and then recorded vocals/overdubs progressively over the months that followed. The track was then sent to Russell Pilling (AKA Russ T. Rokk) for mixing, and the mastering was done by William Bowden at King Willy Studios.

How did you approach the recording process?
As it’s a two-part song, we chose to record the two sections separately, allowing us to ensure we got the change in the tempo of the song exactly how we wanted it to be. Drums and bass were tracked first, then the different guitar parts were added, before harmonica (performed by Jack B. Harper) and final vocals were recorded.

What influenced the music video for Hangman?
We worked in conjunction with Jacob Boote (director) and Jala-loka Lewandowski (videographer/editor) for the video. Jacob wanted to go for a dark, medieval-ish look for the first part of the song, and a brighter, more modern looking live band shoot for the outro “B part”. Laura Mead created some props to assist us, including the “hangman” headpiece. We started shooting at about 2pm and finished by about 8 on a rainy, windy day in Forth Tasmania. The whole process was great fun – Jacob and Jala-loka were excellent to work with and many laughs were had along the way.

Any upcoming shows?
We’re at Shearwater Resort Tavern on 02/12/22, Island State Brewing – The Pier (Ulverstone) on 23/12/22 and 20/01/23, and MONA Museum (Hobart) on 05/02/23

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Lately we’ve been listening to plenty of Tasmanian artists, including new releases from Big Alcatraz, Marcus Wynwood, Tessa Lee, Raccoon Dog, and The True Champions of Breakfast, as well as some old favourites by the likes of The Bad Dad Orchestra, Pete Cornelius, The Sheyana Band, Avargo Groove, and The Smooth C***s.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
We plan to continue writing new songs, giging, and to release another five or six track EP of songs recorded during the same sessions as “Hangman” at some stage in 2023.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
A good burger by the Leven River! We can’t wait for Island State Brewing – The Pier to open up in the former location of the ever-popular Buttons Brew Pub. You can’t beat a beer/food/live music joint perched above the river of your hometown!

Melbourne’s free all-ages festival, ‘Illuminate the River’ reveals set times, announces flood fundraising initiatives

by the partae November 16, 2022
written by the partae

Illuminate the River, the free and all-ages music festival featuring Something for Kate, Baker Boy, Art vs. Science, Montaigne, Mia Wray, Teeny Tiny Stevies and many more lands this weekend, and ahead of the day, the festival has unveiled set times and a fundraising initiative for flood-affected residents.

Presented by City of Moonee Valley and On The Road Again and held on Saturday 19 November at The Boulevard in Aberfeldie from 12pm – 9pm, the day’s activities include three stages of live music, carnival rides, kids’ activities, a box wars workshop and more.

A full list of set times can be downloaded HERE or are located below.

Given the festival’s proximity to the flood zones on the Maribyrnong River, all water-based activities at the event, including the anticipated laser show and inflatable regatta, have been cancelled.

Instead, the festival is encouraging patrons to dig deep and support members of their community affected by the recent floods, and the organisations that help them.

Fundraising QR codes will be situated throughout the site on the day, which the public can scan to donate to GIVIT, the Essendon SES or both.

Volunteers in the Essendon SES Unit have been protecting Moonee Valley and surrounding communities since 1981. Most recently they coordinated the evacuation and rescue of residents when the Maribyrnong River flooded.

GIVIT has been helping those impacted by the recent floods directly. This organisation matches donors directly to those in need or uses 100% of donated funds to purchase items that are requested by those who need them.

Produced by the City of Moonee Valley and presented by On The Road Again, a Victorian Government initiative bringing live music back across the state, Illuminate the River 2022 will be held on Saturday 19 November from 12pm – 9pm in the Boulevard in Aberfeldie, and is a free, family-friendly and all-ages event.

Attendees are encouraged to walk, cycle or catch public transport to the event.
