NEAV releases her cinematic pop debut EP ‘ELEGY’ Featuring the new single ‘To Love’

by the partae November 23, 2022

Central Coast artist NEAV (aka Niamh Watson) releases her 6-track debut EP ‘Elegy’ today.

NEAV collaborated with a talented group of musicians and producers to bring her musical vision to life. She worked with Mario Späte (Washington, Montaigne); Jess Dess (King Princess, Brockhampton); Rod McCormack (Paul Kelly, Gina Jeffreys); David Turley (Millie Turner); and Tristan Barton (Greta Stanley). Two songs from her debut EP won the contemporary/pop category of the national Australian Songwriters Association Awards. The songs were ‘Silence Song’ in 2020 and ‘Tragic Drama’ in 2021.

“ELEGY has been in the works since the beginning of 2020. Silence Song was the breakthrough track for me as it was the moment when I discovered who “NEAV” was sonically. I had written and released songs in the past but this one felt different. Little did I know it would act as the catalyst for my debut EP.”

NEAV

PLAY/LISTEN

Inspired by fellow Australian artists such as Vera Blue and G-Flip, NEAV uses her voice as a true instrument whilst showcasing her innate ability to produce songs that are instantly memorable. When writing her debut EP, NEAV took cues from one of her idols St Vincent.

“One thing that stood out to me that I will always take into account when I am writing my own music is the importance of tension and release as a listener. This rule that she (St Vincent) sticks to really resonates with me because I think that the element of surprise and enjoyment in music is what makes a good piece of music.” NEAV

NEAV’s sophisticated approach to songwriting, and her rhythmic phrasing when singing illustrates her powerful intelligence that belies her youthful experiences. She writes from a place of heartfelt ideas with honesty and vulnerability. NEAV admits that she was extremely shy and didn’t say much throughout primary school, and no one knew she could sing or play guitar. She managed to hide that up until the  very last day of primary school when she performed in the school talent show and ended up winning.

NEAV’s 6 track debut EP was recorded and mastered at The Nest in Surry Hills with Tristan Barton (Greta Stanley). It features previously released singles: ‘Talking To The Devil’, ‘Built The Same’, ‘Silence Song’ and the current single ‘Say Goodbye’, plus 2 new songs.

“Working before, during and after lockdown periods with a group of super talented songwriters, producers and sound engineers has been a hectic yet beautiful experience. The rest of the EP came together afterwards, with each song that was created I challenged myself to be more vulnerable and push the boundaries of who “NEAV” is as an artist. We spent a long time deciding what songs made it onto the EP and made sure that they all fit the concept we went with regarding the title. Because of this, the finished project is something that I can truly say I am proud of and can’t wait for it to be out in the world.” NEAV

18 year old NEAV is signed to Sydney indie label Double Drummer (Greta Stanley, Dominic Breen, Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird) and ORiGIN Music Publishing (Gotye, Megan Washington, Lior). NEAV’s burgeoning reputation as a live performer has seen her open for and share a stage with artists such as Greta Stanley, Bec Sandridge, The Moving Stills, Dan Sultan, Imogen Clark, Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird, Little Quirks, Elaskia and Molly Millington in well known venues across Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast.

With the release of her debut EP, NEAV is proving she’s one of Australia’s most enthralling and brightest new artists.

After a sell-out event in 2022 that attracted almost 16,000 people from across Australia, BASSINTHEGRASS has become a must-do on the national music festival calendar. Aussie music phenomenon Tones and I said she loves the Top End.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to Darwin after playing New Year’s Eve 2020. It was a great memory and I loved the city,” she said.

Guy Sebastian said he can’t wait to head north to take part.

“I am so stoked to be heading up to Darwin to play live with my band at BASSINTHEGRASS. I love heading to the NT – the vibe up there is always electric, and the energy I get from everyone up north always leaves me and the band buzzing with how much they love music and life. See you next year, legends!” he said.

Delivered by Northern Territory Major Events Company (NTMEC) on behalf of the Northern Territory Government, BASSINTHEGRASS continues to evolve each year.

“Last year’s BASSINTHEGRASS was absolutely huge, it really was amazing,” NTMEC Head of Events and Operations Coryn Huddy said.

“This year music fans can expect an equally memorable time, not just at the festival, but also experiencing all the unique tourism experiences the Territory has to offer.”

A limited number of General Admission tickets are available for $120. Once they are gone, Final Release tickets will go on sale for $140. Those looking for a premium festival experience can purchase a limited LA COCO ticket for $285, which includes express entry, plus access to the exclusive LA COCO space, with its cruisy beach vibe. Think shady places to relax, cool cocktails and swaying palm trees. LA COCO also features private bars and amenities, an LED screen, limited-design BASS stubby cooler, and more.

All BASSINTHEGRASS tickets include a $50 Travello voucher to be used on a Territory tourism experience.

Last year’s BASSINTHEGRASS sold out well in advance, and 2023 looks set to follow suit. Grab your ticket now at www.bassinthegrass.com.au.

Riverboats Music Festival Returns In 2023 With Marlon Williams, Spiderbait, C.W. Stoneking and more!

RIVERBOATS MUSIC FESTIVAL RETURNS IN 2023 WITH MARLON WILLIAMS, SPIDERBAIT, C.W. STONEKING AND MORE!

Tickets on sale now

Multi-award winning Riverboats Music Festival has today announced the lineup for its 2023 event, scheduled to take place at a new temporary location at Echuca’s Victoria Park Reserve from February 17-19, 2023.

Staged on Yorta Yorta country, Riverboats 2023 will present performances by Marlon Williams (NZ), Spiderbait, C.W. Stoneking & His Primitive Horn Orchestra, The Rolling Stones Revue featuring Adalita, Phil Jamieson & Tex Perkins, The Whitlams, Felix Riebl, Alice Skye, Tami Neilson (NZ), Thornbird, Katy Steele, Andy Golledge Band, WILSN, Bones & Jones, Watty Thompson, Bud Rokesky and MC Brian Nankervis (Rockwiz).

The new venue is a notable modification to this year’s program. The festival’s traditional home at Aquatic Reserve on the banks of the Murray River has transformed into a natural wetland as a result of region’s recent flooding, resulting in a temporary relocation for Riverboats’ 11th instalment.

“Echuca-Moama has gone through an incredibly challenging period over the last few weeks, and our hearts go out to all those affected by the recent floods.

Riverboats has been part of the Echuca-Moama community for over 10 years now, and whilst we’re sad to be leaving Aquatic Reserve next year, we can’t wait to put on a spectacular show at Victoria Park in a few months time”
says Festival Director Dave Frazer.

In partnership with Murray River Paddlesteamers, Riverboats 2023 will once again offer a limited series of intimate sideshows aboard the historic PS Pevensey paddlesteamer. Music fans will be given the opportunity to cruise down the river to the soundtrack of Alice Skye, Felix Riebl, Andy Golledge, WILSN, Bones & Jones and Watty Thompson.

Having sold out in just six days last year, tickets to Riverboats 2023 are likely to be in high demand. Access to the family-friendly event start from just $75 and traditionally move very quickly following the program announcement.

Dave Frazer reflects, “Riverboats will once again deliver a remarkable lineup of Australian artists in 2023, with some award-winning Kiwi’s thrown in for good measure. To be able to present international acts of the calibre of Marlon Williams alongside homegrown legends including Spiderbait, The Whitlams and C.W. Stoneking is a truly exciting thing, and we can’t wait to get back to Echuca-Moama in a few months’ time”

SUPER FUN DAY FESTIVAL RETURNS IN 2023 WITH DUNE RATS, FIDLAR, PATTI HARRISON + MORE

SUPER FUN DAY FESTIVAL RETURNS IN 2023
WITH DUNE RATS, FIDLAR, RUBY FIELDS, PATTI HARRISON + HEAPS MORE!

.

COMEDY AND MUSIC MERGE FOR THE ULTIMATE FUN DAY OUT IN BRISSY ON MARCH 18

Super Fun Day is set to return to Brisbane in March 2023! Bringing together comedy and music in one unbelievably fun format, Super Fun Day has rounded up the best of both worlds with Dune Rats, FIDLAR (USA), Ruby Fields, Pale Waves (UK), Beach Bunny (USA), Ocean Grove, Patti Harrison (USA) and The Reytons (UK) leading the massive 2023 lineup.

The festival will also feature (in alphabetical order) Dan Rath, Danielle Walker, Frenchy & The Talent, Hevenshe, Hot Department, John Cruckshank, Juno, Late November, The Moving Stills, Karaoke With Shaggy Knees and more to be announced across two stages at Eatons Hill Outdoors + Ballroom on Saturday March 18.

Giving a new meaning to the term ‘mixed bill’, Super Fun Day combines music and comedy in a uniquely uplifting format. Making its debut in early 2022 the festival immediately established itself as one of the standouts of the summer.

Dune Rats will make a very special detour from their European tour to headline Super Fun Day in 2023. No joke, Dunies will fly back to Australia for one hell of a hometown show, featuring their ARIA nominated album, Real Rare Whale. For the first time since 2013, they’ll be reunited with their longtime SoCal mates FIDLAR who have come storming back from a three-year hiatus clutching a handful of new singles from an EP hitting our ears in early 2023.

Next up, we’ve got a whole round of firsts: Manchester indie pop punks Pale Waves will make their long-awaited return to this side of the world (and their first trip to Brissy), arriving with their brand new album Unwanted and Chicago-based indie pop band Beach Bunny will premiere their self-assured songs in Australia in March 2023.

Lauded American comedian and actress Patti Harrison will also make her Australian debut at Super Fun Day. Known for her appearances in Paul Feig’s Feature A Simple Favor and television shows High Maintenance, Search Party, The Tonight Show and Full Frontal, Patti has also amassed an impressive list of TV writing credits including Netflix’s I Think You Should Leave and Big Mouth.

Indie rockers The Reytons are a word of mouth sensation in the UK whose meteoric rise is just astonishing. A completely independent, unsigned band from South Yorkshire, their debut album reached #11 on the UK charts and tickets to their shows are a hot property with the band selling out arenas in a matter of hours. Their Australian debut at Super Fun Day is not to be missed!

DZ DEATHRAYS EXPAND THEIR THRASHING LEGACY WITH NEW SINGLE ‘PARANOID’

by the partae November 23, 2022

PRAISE FOR DZ DEATHRAYS

ARIA Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album (Bloodstreams, Black Rat)
AIR Best Independent Hard Rock or Punk Album (Bloodstreams, Black Rat, Bloody Lovely
AIR Best Independent Punk Album or EP (Positive Rising: Pt 1)

“Brilliant videos and songs and a great sense of humour and style”
Mark Ronson

“They speak to my soul. It just feels good listening to their music”
MAY-A

“More than worth going deaf to”
Pitchfork

“This album has the potential to make your little sister want to
shave her head and invest in mock leather hotpants”

NME Magazine UK

“Moody Aussie noisemakers DZ Deathrays bring the concept album back to life. Again…”
Kerrang (4/5)

“It’s built on the intuitive interplay between Parsons and Ewbank, whose heavily textured playing doesn’t always sound like guitars — more like a twin malevolent force that every so often waxes celestial, like sunlight spearing through storm clouds.”
The Australian (4/5)

“Throughout Positive Rising: Part 2, undoubtedly DZ Deathrays’ most guitar-heavy record to date, Shane Parsons regulates vocal nuances like never before, guitarist Lachlan Ewbank slays multitudinous ways and Simon Ridley’s drumming can only be described as majestic”
STACK

“it’s blindingly obvious that these tracks were carefully constructed to absolutely smash
venues to pieces when translated to a live setting”

Dead Press UK

“DZ Deathrays have gone beyond the noise and energy (which was excellent) that they had from the start and have created something truly epic, memorable and monumental. If there is any justice in this world, they should be huge.”
Wall of Sound (10/10)

Indispensable post-punk trio DZ Deathrays today release their anthemic new single, ‘Paranoid’. LISTEN HERE.

‘Paranoid’ is a driving track, punctured by syncopated rhythms, buzzing feedback and a fiery chorus. DZ’s sound sings through the piece, with heavy double and triple-octave riff instrumentals reverberating on the lyrics: “Oi, oi, ya paranoid, hanging at the back waiting to get destroyed.” The track features notable nods to classic Aussie rock; percussive built-up introductions, howling vocals and driving repetition, demonstrating DZ Deathrays‘ lasting ability to deliver carnage-inducing riffage.

Speaking to the meaning behind ‘Paranoid‘, lead vocalist and guitarist Shane Parsons says, “I think at the time I was thinking about the way I kept questioning myself in different aspects in life. Loosely it’s about that, wanting to go in a certain direction with something but having this lingering thing stopping you or setting up roadblocks here and there.”

“The track was a real collaborative effort with Simon and Nathan Sheehy, who produced the record with us, putting the drums together. Nathan had a particular direction that the drum performance needed to go to and once we got it all together it was a really fresh approach to that part of the song for us. There’s also demo parts in there too, including Lachlan’s partner Eileen yelling “Oi, oi, ya paranoid” into a phone after chorus one and the out-of-phase claps that bring in the song.”

The multi-ARIA winning group have come a long way since the first house party gig they formed for, cultivating a global following for their addictive punk energy and sheer volume. From their inception, DZ Deathrays remain one of the most recognisable acts in the contemporary Australian rock canon, most notably with the success of their debut album Bloodstreams which made DZ synonymous with thunderous. Quickly followed by their second album Black Rat signifying a maturer sound, they expanded beyond their garage roots into an award-winning machine, touring the world countless times over, supporting The Foo Fighters stadium tours, Ratatat, Biffy Clyro, Grinspoon and more, headline slots across The Tivoli, The Enmore and The Forum, to collaborating with a Wiggle.

Amongst DZ‘s enduring fanbase they remain festival favourites with performance tallies across multiple years at Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival, St. Jerome’s Laneway alongside international appearances at SXSW, Reading and Leeds Festival, and multiple entries in triple j‘s Hottest 100. Coupled with their more recent LPs Bloody Lovely and their critically-acclaimed twin concept albums, Positive Rising: Part 1 and Part 2, the project of Shane Parsons, Simon Ridley and Lachlan Ewbank has long cemented DZ Deathrays‘ staple status – it’s not every day that a band gets stronger and more popular with time. Looking to the future they affirm that the party never dies.

‘Paranoid‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Following the release of their debut mixtape, Foreign Language, 1300 debut their collaboration with producer SOLLYY in their new track, ‘CARDIO!’. LISTEN HERE.

‘CARDIO!‘ diverges from their mashed-up hip-hop electronic sound to a more trap-fixated beat courtesy of SOLLYY, whilst still maintaining their sharp Korean-English raps, lively breaks and perfectly timed drops. The production of the track is clean and sonically transformative, weaving between booming bassline synths and explosive, echoing group vocals. On brand for 1300, ‘CARDIO!’ showcases each of their talents in an exchange of slick verses and beats. The track promises a party season favourite, boasting potential for energetic live performance and audience engagement, much in line with the mosh-appeal atmosphere of their shows.

The collaboration between 1300 and SOLLYY originated through a quick Instagram callout – an instance where SOLLYY shared an unnamed beat to his social media page and 1300 joined in the further production of following the post, bringing their combined essence to the tune.

1300 have taken a more tongue-in-cheek approach to the track, drawing from the fan feedback on how their music is listened to in gym settings, “We thought it’d be funny to make a song called ‘Cardio’ because we all don’t do any exercise at all. We’re like asthmatic, don’t do any exercise, don’t do cardio ever.”

Since the release of their debut mixtape in April 1300 have performed live across Korea, playing in esteemed venues including Value and Henz Club, as well as Seoul Community Radio’s HAJODAZE YANGYANG Festival. The collective have played alongside acclaimed hip-hop acts including Paloalto, Lil Boi, Ugly Duck, APRO, and Nucksal, teasing the chance of exciting new collaborations with international acts in the future. 1300 have been nominated for the Australian Music Prize, and more recently for FBi Radio SMAC Awards for Record of the Year (Foreign Language) and Best Video for their track ‘Oldboy’. They’ll be soon taking the stage this summer, with upcoming multi-hyphenate appearances at Falls Festival, Spilt Milk, Lost Paradise and Dream Machine Bali. All dates BELOW.

‘CARDIO!‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

BIG SKEEZ ROUNDS OFF 2022 WITH NEW AMAPIANO ANTHEM ‘WORK DON’T STOP OUT NOW VIA NLV RECORDS + ON TOUR WITH ALLDAY THIS NOV – DEC

to take notice. We won’t be shocked when he achieves this and more”

Vogue Australia

“A melting pot of style, resulting in a party-ready anthem”

“An absolute moment”
MTV Australia

Big Skeez today drops his final release for 2022 with ‘Work Don’t Stop’, out via his longtime home on NLV Records. LISTEN HERE + WATCH THE VISUALISER HERE.

‘Work Don’t Stop’ is another contagious listen from Big Skeez, pulling together his acclaimed approach to elements of amapiano and afrobeat that further cements his ability to move between musical identities. Navigating the characteristics of ongoing determination in both music and everyday life, the track is a rousing production backed by casual vocals, swirling with bold log drum basslines and an elevating hook.

Produced by Nigerian-based Arieenati and OG Sterling and with additional production by frequent collaborator Swick, Big Skeez shares the track’s inception, “This track is about self-motivation. The song speaks about my own past life situations, but how I strive to go on. “Work Don’t Stop” defines me, pushing myself and driving from what’s within, it won’t let you stop doing what you do best and achieving all your goals.”

The release of ‘Work Don’t Stop’ follows Big Skeez’s recent narration and soundtracking of the Western Sydney Wanderers, where he performed his single ‘Up’ in the launch, speaking to the mentality and attitude of the people in Western Sydney. It also comes off the back off his Shazam charting Human Movement-collaboration ‘House Check’ and impressive BIGSOUND run, which drew attention across local tastemakers: “There was so much to love about Big Skeez’s high energy performances, proving that he’s a crucial part of an exciting and growing scene in Australia” (triple j); “his bars are every bit as good as his ability to hype the crowd” (Double J); and “equipped with more than enough physical oomph to get a dance floor moving” (Music Feeds) amongst others.

Big Skeez‘s music is in constant conversation with his roots, whether they lay in Africa or in Dharawal Land / Western Sydney. This proud sense of being simultaneously from and for a community still pulses tangibly through every aspect of his music, offering a decidedly different light to the surfeit of music that is currently emanating from his hometown. On the single’s visuals, Big Skeez collaborated with photographer Richmond Kobla Dido, frequent collaborator Murli Dhir and creative director Basjia Almaan to bring together an all-Sudanese cast. Almaan shares, “It is imperative that black artists are seen, heard, and celebrated in this country. Black culture is at the centre of music and art. Mainstream trends are modelled off black people, the style, the steez, the hair, the WOMEN, are the blueprint and rarely do black people get credit or recognition. It was important that this art celebrated that, celebrated the culture and those who are a part of it and continue to create it”.

Having drip-fed singles including ‘No Trace’, ‘Where Yuh From (with Gold Fang)’ and ‘Bang’, his sound is immersed in the sounds of Africa, Afrobeat, Dancehall, Reggae, and R&B, studied from his parents and “borrowed” from older siblings; the result is a wavy, melodically-driven Afro Swing iteration entirely his own, livelier, more vibrant and upbeat, standing alongside global stars J Hus, Pa Salieu, Burna Boy and others.

Big Skeez will be taking his vivacious live performance to stages across the country in support of Allday’s tour, alongside an appearance at ON3’s Local Produce Block Party in December. Dates and more information can be found BELOW.

Australian duo Sunset Bros and their fellow Aussie producer 15grams join forces to remake one of house music’s favorite classics, “Days Go By” by Dirty Vegas. It’s quite a bold move to remake this Grammy-winning track, but their version breathes fresh life into this timeless club classic. Featuring emotive female vocals and an amped-up drop with a deep and driving bassline, the new rendition of “Days Go By” is a heavy-hitting dancefloor thriller. 15grams recently debuted on Timmy Trumpet‘s SINPHONY label with his fusion of bold tech-house sounds and made some serious noise on such other labels as RCA / Famouz Records, Monstercat, and Bourne Records of Will Sparks, while Sunset Bros have previously released on Universal Music, Xploded, Cinematik. Check out quotes from the artists below and press play for a modern take on “Days Go By:”

“Joining forces with Adriano and Glen (Sunset Bros) was a great experience. We turned this song into a main room techno anthem combining both our production styles” – 15grams

“‘Days Go By‘ has been a classic track we loved from the moment we heard it back in the early 2000s. The story in the original video clip was so fascinating and different; it really hits you in the feels. Recently when 15grams showed us the cover he got recorded, I fell in love with it and said, “That’s an absolute yes!“. It’s an honor to do a new version of this timeless classic, and we hope you enjoy the journey!” – Sunset Bros

15grams

Established Australian recording artist Brendan Mosca AKA 15grams, has toured internationally from Vegas to Mykonos and all in between. Supporting some of the biggest artists in the world, such as Axwell, Martin Garrix, Hardwell, and the one and only Avicii, to name a few. His unique style with blends of vocal tech house and Brazilian bass, his performances as a DJ & hype man, have earned him residencies at iconic global nightlife destinations such as Marquee, Sydney and Paradise Club, Mykonos. In an unprecedented pivotal year for the music industry, Brendan took 2020 on as an opportunity to hone his skills as a producer and identify with the sounds that mean the most to him as an artist. A few projects later and 15grams signed a major label deal with Famouz Records, a JV with Sony Music – the pinnacle region for any recording artists’ success in Europe and has not looked back since. Now being featured in some of the biggest Spotify curated playlists on the platform and compelling video clips on YouTube, the hypnotic hooks of 15grams are climbing their way onto airwaves and beyond. With a brief history boasting plenty of support in his home country by promoters and artists alike, 15grams weighs in on the international dance scene in a big way. Dipping his feet into reality television, Brendan‘s global fan base is stepping into a whole new realm and definitely not the artist to sleep on.

Sunset Bros

Very few producers can achieve career longevity. Then again, very few producers make an impact as lasting as Sunset Bros‘. With their crisp production, infectious melodies, and a penchant for tasteful selection, it’s no surprise that they have carved a reputation as a pioneering act in their field. Hailing from Sydney, Australia, the duo has filled dancefloors across the world with their distinct sound – a fusion of NRG, house, techno, and trance that’s made them a household name in modern dance music. Over the course of their 15-year career, the Sunset Bros have released a slew of remixes for acts such as the Black Eyed Peas, Fedde Le Grand, Vengaboys, Bob Sinclair, and Cascada. 2017 proved to be a milestone year of their career, with the release of their viral hit single, “I’m Feeling It (In The Air).” Sunset Bros found themselves landing monumental playlist wins across Spotify and Apple Music, including peaking at #5 on Spotify UK‘s “Massive Dance Hits” and landing on major Apple Music dance playlists such as “A-List Dance” and “Dance Workout.” To date, the track has amassed over 30M streams on Spotify alone and has earned the duo a 2 x Platinum IRMA certification. With radio support around the world – including BBC Radio 1, “I’m Feeling It” is undoubtedly the breakthrough single synonymous with the Sunset Bros brand. The aforementioned remix has even taken on a nominal lifeform of its own, becoming a staple in DJ sets across the globe, including Armin Van Buuren‘s – who admitted that the track was his favorite tune of 2018. It was a high note for the duo’s touring books, which saw them debut their “We Are Sunset” hard-ticketed concert show to a sold-out Enmore Theatre in Sydney. The pair went on to sell out a staggering 13 Sydney shows in a row – including 5 x Marquee Sydney, 3 x Ivy Club, and 3 x Metro Theatre shows. The boys have built quite an impressive profile internationally, too – pulling in record numbers at the esteemed Mykonos‘ Cavo Paradiso and Havana‘s Tropicana Club; whilst also embarking on a triple sold-out UK/ Ireland tour. And if it’s any indication that the crowds can’t get enough of the Sunset Bros, the duo’s phenomenal touring history has landed them some coveted festival appearances such as Creamfields 2018, and most recently, the inaugural Ultra Australia 2019, which saw them electrify thousands on the main stage across both Sydney and Melbourne weekends. The future is paramount for the Sunset Bros; with new singles, remixes, and even bigger shows to come, all to make a mark on their undying legacy.

Carly Reirson ‘Aurora’ Premiere

by the partae November 21, 2022
written by the partae

Born and raised in Leduc, AB, singer-songwriter Carly Reirson captivates audiences with her soaring melodies and honest lyrics. Whether it is love or heartache, Reirson’s “sad-folk” songs take you on a journey through the world of human emotion. Inspired by artists such as Brandi Carlile, Sara Bareilles, and Rose Cousins, her smooth, yet edgy voice brings you face to face with your own feelings as she shares her stories of love, loss and loneliness.

Reirson has spent the last six years immersed in songwriting, penning the tracks for her upcoming album, Diary of a Beating Heart. The first single from the new album, “Aurora,” is a soothing, atmospheric folk song about one of nature’s beauties – the Northern Lights. Written by Reirson and produced by multiple award-winning producer, Murray Pulver (CCMA, WCMA, Canadian Folk, and JUNO), the track features rolling guitar and poetic lyrics that invite listeners to wrap themselves up in the warm tones and smooth melodies of the song.”Growing up in the Alberta prairies, I was always captivated by the Northern Lights. With the guitar motif already written, the imagery that the Aurora Borealis conjured up in my mind came easily. Working with Murray, we were able to capture the magic of the music and lyrics to create a track with timeless sound and universal appeal.”

Reirson first made her mark on the national music scene in 2016 with her debut EP, Fantasy. The project received two nominations at the 2017 Calgary Music Awards for Blues Recording of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. In 2018, her single “Crooner Sing To Me” won the YYCMA Award for Blues Recording of the Year. No stranger to the stage, Reirson has played over 100 shows to date, including five headlining tours throughout Western Canada. Having a rare ability to connect with audiences, Reirson’s upcoming songs continue to showcase her passion for vulnerability in her music.

Kora

by the partae November 20, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We are based literally all over the country. Dan lives in Queenstown, Darren in Wellington, Stu in Waimana/Whakatane, Fran in Papamoa, Richie in Waihi, Marika and Karlos in Auckland.

What’s the NZ music scene like at the moment?

There is some amazing stuff coming out of NZ at the moment. The music scene is in a very healthy place but I think it’s fair to say that the live music scene is heavily saturated, especially over the summer. For a small nation there is a huge amount of music festivals, international acts, and everything else in between.

How did Kora form?

Kora first began its roots in Queenstown with original members Laughton and Dan. The group properly gained its momentum in Wellington with brothers Fran, Brad and Stu joining. In the early 2000’s Ice TV held a competition to “win” a music video. People had the chance to vote in for their fav band to win and Kora won the most votes for their song “Politician”.

That was the official kick start to band.

What’s been happening recently?

Its been a good year of planning, recording and releasing music, as well as being part of Te Reo Maori music with Waiata Anthems.

Coming up to the summer run of gigs, we’re looking forward to playing at some of the biggest music festivals including Rhythm and Alps, Splore, HomeGrown to name a few.

Your latest single ‘Gone’ will be out on the 18th of November, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The MPC LIVE helped to influence the making of Gone. Dan and I had a writing session in Queenstown and we actually wrote Gone in one day.

Other influences such as the upbeat drive of Womack and Womacks ‘Teardrops’ and the simplicity of Fleetwood Macs ‘Dreams’

How did you go about writing Gone?

After the foundation of the beat was locked in, I lay down the bass which was recorded straight into a D.I.

We used Dans Logic Synthesizer to lay down the bell pads.

Dan had some dance samples in Ableton which we added to give it a bit of a disco dance vibes.

I had a story that I thought would be great for the song, so we quickly grabbed a couple of acoustic panels and set up Dans lounge as the recording booth. We then busted the vocals out in Dans lounge before the idea was lost.

I later added some acoustic and electric guitar and boom that was the creation of ‘Gone”

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

Everything apart from mastering was recorded and produced by Dan and Myself at home.

We recorded the song about a year and a half back and most of it was tracked at Dans house in Queenstown. I did the guitars in my garage in Papamoa.

We both mixed it down at home, then sent it to get stem Mastered in the states. I cant remember the name of the mastering company tho?

How did you approach the recording process?

To be honest, it was one of those songs that made itself.

Who are your favourite NZ bands at the moment?

Shapeshifter, LAB, Rob Ruha, Troy Kingi, FFD, LADI6, The list goes on.

Who are you listening to?

I listen to all music however I really love Tiny Desk Projects because there is something magical about having a stripped back performance which feels more personal and vulnerable.

Pino Palladino and Blake Mills Tiny Desk is just magic.

What do you like to do away from music?

Surfing, Eating way too much, looking after the kids, random mid week drinking with our friends,  and Binge watching TV shows with my partner.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

We are playing the countdown for New Years Rhythm and Alps in Wanaka which is a spectacular part of the world.

We’ve just come off doing a massive show with Six60 and have another show with them in March.

More gigs and festivals, More recording sessions, more releases next year.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Food Places: BBQ Noodle house (Mt Albert Auckland), KC Cafe (Courtenay Place Wellington), Izakai (Bayfair Mt Maunganui), Family Special Korean (Hamilton), Bhan mi caphe (Hamilton), Bobby’s Seafood (Tauranga).

I don’t really hangout anywhere but on the odd occasion will have a beer at our local pubs The Flying Mullet and The Island (Papamoa).

KORA releases fresh soulful R&B jam ‘GONE’

by the partae November 20, 2022

PLAY/LISTEN

A composition that strides hard with emotional lyrics and rousing R&B rhythms, KORA’s new song ‘Gone’ is a classic piece of broken-hearted soul that speaks of someone coming to terms with the end of a romance, and that person’s struggle to save a doomed relationship.

A blend of timeless keys, acoustic guitars, groovy drums, and mellow bass creates a song that could be a hit in any decade. The song has been a live favourite in KORA sets since the summer of 2021/2022 and is a hotly anticipated release.

“The inspiration for this song is simply life. The highs and lows of love and loss have been sung about since the beginning of time, but how we come out the other side is the journey that makes us stronger.” KORA

‘Gone’ was recorded by the band and mixed by Scott Banks (Snavs, Bruno Martini) at Studio DMI in Tauranga, Aotearoa New Zealand. The track follows up their recent single ‘All You Need’ which garnered playlist support across Spotify (NMF, Island Time, The Local List), and Youtube’s “Top Songs Of The Week.”

“Gone is a jam we worked on during lockdown, sending stems backwards and forward between us from Papamoa to Queenstown, the North Island to the South! The video kept being pushed back by lockdowns and travel restrictions, and then when those ended there was no snow…so it’s been a patient process realising our vision on this one. The mix was done by Scott Banks @ Studio DMI out in Las Vegas, and he has kept it smooth and buttery.” KORA

The accompanying video was directed by acclaimed cinematographer Heath Patterson and filmed in beautiful Queenstown, Aotearoa New Zealand.  Daniel showcases in the video that there can be rhythm with the blues, and there is nothing wrong with dancing your sorrows away while you look to new horizons for the next mountain to climb. “The video is filmed in my backyard, a special place and a home to the band, where the song was written and recorded. A spiritual journey to find your groove and soul after a painful breakup.” Daniel McGruer, KORA

KORA are a 5 piece contemporary mostly family affair reggae act from New Zealand that formed in the 1990’s. Kora’s unique and eclectic blend of music has passed 50 million streams on Spotify and they have amassed 205K+ followers. They are household names in New Zealand with multiple platinum selling albums, and they’ve cemented themselves as one of the nation’s finest live acts. In Aotearoa, Kora has been seen at Big Day Out, Rhythm & Vines, WOMAD, Coromandel Gold, Homegrown, and Splore. Internationally, their touring highlights include London and Scotland with Crazy P & Norman J, a sell-out at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire, WOMAD UK, Snowsplash (Japan), Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (USA), and Mosaic Festival (Singapore).

Closer to home, they have performed at Australia’s WOMADelaide, Pyramid Rock, Playground, Fresh Fest, and Quicksilver Pro music festivals.

Throughout the COVID era, Kora has continued writing and performing at Aotearoa’s biggest festivals. Summer 2021-2022 saw Kora play Rhythm & Alps, Soundsplash, and Sundown among the COVID-impacted live music circuit. In May 2022, Kora headlined Australia’s Gold Coast’s inaugural Good Love Festival.

PRAISE FOR KORA

“Equal parts exhilaration and exhortation, ‘Secret Lover’ is a tune that entices the listener to relax and revel in the thrill of attraction.”

SCOOP

“Light Years is a mix across the genres with the band capturing the well known energy of their live shows and pushing the studio envelope to create their Gold selling sophomore effort.”

TONE DEAF

“You can expect a high-energy show and tour. The boys know how to play and engage with an audience. The fans will feel like they’ve had a personal experience with the boys.”

Jasper Tygner gives a taste of forthcoming four tracker ‘Real Time’ (LG105) with first single ‘Deny It’

by the partae November 18, 2022
written by the partae

The single follows his recent debut sold-out live show at Peckham Audio

Previous support from Pete Tong, Jamz Supernova, Jaguar, Sian Eleri, Clash, Beatportal ‘Radar’, Music Week, Amazon Music; early support from Bicep, Kink, Disclosure, DJ Seinfeld

Jasper Tygner, from fresh faced artist to live producer with big name support in only 2 years, releases ‘Deny It’ (November 17th); the first single from the multi-instrumentalist’s upcoming debut EP ‘Real Time’ on alt-electronic imprint LG105 (Mall Grab, Effy, Steel City Dance Discs, Mafro, Duke Boara), due out early 2023.

‘Deny It’ drops hot on the heels of his debut sell-out live show at Peckham Audio (Nov 12th).  After early tastemaker support, he gained momentum in his home via his ‘Bedroom Rave’ Instagram videos, catching the attention of artists like Bicep, Kink, Disclosure and DJ Seinfeld along with thousands of bereft locked-down clubbers. With releases on Shall Not Fade, Silver Bear, supporting DJ Boring, Leon Vynehall, salute, O’Flynn, and a set at Field Day, Jasper is undoubtedly a name to know on the alt scene and well beyond.

Now the 20-something north London live artist’s solo project is gaining more heavyweight industry support and reaching dancers’ feet as well as listeners’ earbuds. ‘A live show has always been the goal ever since I started this project’ says Jasper. ‘To sell out the first one is pretty crazy, seeing and meeting some of the people who have supported my music from the start is going to be really gratifying’

Playing the drums from 4 and playing live extensively from 9 in jazz and orchestral genres, Tygner plays drums, keys/jazz piano. A devotee of Moog analog synths, he names UK garage, jungle and dubstep as formative influences.

Tygner also uses visuals as inspiration. ‘Deny It’ was coloured by 90s-early 00s TV shows, blurs, glitches and all, created as a ‘4 to the floor, garage track’. As well as enlisting the Moog synth family, he made his own drum sounds for the single. The track starts straight in with a cool, pitch-shifted vocal melange riffing on the title, a fast, subtly changing beat, with funky keys hopping above gut-grabbing euphoric synth chords. Dance fuel for sure.

The full four track EP promises more for the floor: ‘A lot of my early lockdown music was so headphone driven, this EP can be played out in the clubs or listened to in headphones.’ And it certainly will be, going by the new single.

Evergreener Define Themselves With Their Resolute Debut EP ‘After Thoughts’

by the partae November 18, 2022

Previous Support For Evergreener

Debut single ‘Deciduous’ and ‘Sinking’ played on Triple J’s Short.Fast.Loud

“ . . . it certainly packs a punch with its inclusion of a breakdown and harsher vocals, it’s just as hard-hitting lyrically“
(Hysteria Mag) [About ‘Sinking’]

“Evergreener, have turned that notch beyond eleven with their explosive new single”
(AAA Backstage) [About ‘Deciduous’]

“What I like about their new single Deciduous is the raw energy (I love the sound of the guitars, above all), the performance (great drumming!) and the overall no-frills/straightforward attitude of the band.”
(Given To Rock) [About ‘Deciduous’]

Stream ‘After Thoughts’

Naarm/Melbourne-based alternative rock/ punk outfit, Evergreener, define and solidify themselves with a resolute 4-track debut EP, ‘After Thoughts’ (out November 18).

Evergreener has come out swinging this year with their debut single ‘Deciduous’ (released May) and the release of their latest single just last month with ‘Sinking’ ahead of this 4-track EP. ‘After Thoughts’ is a fitting name for this EP as it will be bouncing around in the chambers of your skull for days after your first listen.

Utilising alt-rock guitars, 90’s post-hardcore drumming and punk vocals, ‘After Thoughts’ explores internal struggles, difficulties within relationships and indecisiveness. Evergreener provide us with their thoughts about their debut EP, ‘After Thoughts’:

“After Thoughts is a culmination of multiple different emotions which were within a chaotic, apathetic, and aggravating time-period for us. Each song takes the listener through a whirlwind of emotions from the feeling of being fed up with the way people are, the feeling of sinking into yourself and living through the eyes of someone else, being stuck in a torn-up world and trying to pick up the pieces to make them feel right again and, the exhausting fights that happen between you and a loved one even though you care about them so much.”

‘Death Waves’ opens the EP and is an upbeat punk anthem for all of those who are sick of being told how to behave. Melodic bass lines, driving drums and huge guitars push you to unapologetically cut ties with the negative people who are dragging you under.

Lead single, ‘Sinking’ embodies the feelings of being trapped in a mental chasm, living life through somebody else’s desires, unwillingly paralysed and devoid of autonomy. Evergreener utilises punk-rock distorted guitars and then breaks away for big post-hardcore breakdowns to portray the feelings of clawing out from the incarceration you’ve found yourself in.

‘Torn’ is another despair-filled track, reflecting on easier times and how we arrived at a fork in the frostbitten woods with barbed wire laid across both paths. The unusual timing of the verses creates unsteady grounds, representing the difficulties of making decisions that might affect you for the rest of your life– a modern alt/metalcore masterpiece.

The closing track, ‘No One Knows’ is a candid entry from Evergreener, exploring struggles within relationships; fighting, arguing and exhaustion from misunderstandings that shroud love and care. ‘No One Knows’ features a tasteful and emotional guitar solo that dampens the corners of your eyes. Dreamy modulated guitars and sincere vocal pleas leave you with the feeling that despite the difficulties you’re experiencing, there’s still hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Leading up to this debut EP release, Evergreener have found support from Hysteria Mag, Heavy, Eat This Music, The Punk Site, AAA Backstage as well as radio play on Triple J, Rock Rage Radio (US), Hard Rock Hell (UK), Radio Wigham (UK), Banks Radio and other community radio stations.

No thought is necessary, get into Evergreener’s debut EP, ‘After Thoughts’, on November 18.

(Stoner Hive) [ About ‘Truth Set Me Free’]

Stream ‘To Be Is To Be Perceived’

Brace yourself for Adelaide/Tarndanya’s trance-inducing psychedelic outfit. SOMNIUM release their sophomore album, ‘To Be Is To Be Perceived’, on November 18.

Entwining sounds from psychedelic rock, progressive rock and jazz, SOMNIUM has built a reputation for a foundation of enticing grooves, trance-inducing tremolo guitars and conceptually narrative vocals. Their psychedelic innovation has been reinforced with support slots with veterans King Gizzard, Pond, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets among many more notable acts.

Coming off the back of three singles, ‘Isolation Island’, ‘Truth Set Me Free’ and ‘What Would You Be When You Die?’, SOMNIUM are dropping their anticipated sophomore album, ‘To Be Is To Be Perceived’.

Exploring themes of love, the mind, the ego and nature, ‘To Be Is To Be Perceived’ is fundamentally about the human experience and how the mind navigates interpersonal interaction. SOMNIUM provide insight into what fueled their sophomore album:

“’To Be is Is to Be Perceived’ is an album of ego death, love, philosophy and wonder. From explosive raw energy to pretty soundscapes of introspection. We uncover groove, harmony and unite modern obscurity and a sense of nostalgia to blend a unique array of songs that have a deeper meaning the more you listen.”

Opening the album is ‘Wilderness Plants and Trees’, welcoming the listener into SOMNIUM’s world–at nature and free of the mechanical movements of civilisation.

Previously released singles ‘Truth Set Me Free’ and ‘Isolation Island’ follow, portraying trepidations of wrestling with one’s turmoil, situated in an isolated island being driven to madness.

Then, ‘4am’ explores a story of early morning escapades with a lover, finding yourself driving down deserted streets with wakefulness driven by only oxytocin and romance.

Latin-American influences bleed through with ‘Movement’, a Bossa-Nova backbone with an interesting blend of Americana guitar work and Australian psychedelic melodies that SOMNIUM are renowned for. The following track, ‘Budapest’, is a love song featuring classical guitars arpeggiating dreamy chords and infectious melodies.

Breaking things up is the intermission track ‘Olive Hop’, a unique hip hop jam with sitar-like guitar work, envelope-filtered funk bass and playful percussion work. ‘Miss Fiasco’ is a unique triple-time jazz shuffle with a chilling paranoid undertone of a trip gone wrong–or was it the trip that was needed?

‘What Would You Be When You Die?’ is the last of SOMNIUM’s singles on the record, coming in as the ninth track on the LP. ‘Pause For A Moment’ directs the listener to stop and question what’s going on. The unexpected synth lines support lyrics crafted during an intoxicated Uber ride, found in the depths of the notes app.

The album’s title track explores the unfamiliar feelings of ego death and how humans perceive rumours they’ve heard about themselves and current events–what’s real and what’s a premeditated haze?

SOMNIUM closes the record with ‘Somnicron’, a self-described rock-rave song and a goodbye to the listeners of the album. This rock jam leaves the listener craving for more, teasing at what’s to come with future releases.

SOMNIUM has found national and international radio play from RDU (New Zealand), Radio Wigham (UK), Southern FM (VIC) and 2SER (NSW), RAGE (Aus),  as well as plenty of play on a variety of community radio stations across Australia including 4ZZZ, 5ZZZ, 5WOW, Tribe FM and more. Previous media support for SOMNIUM includes Hysteria, AAA Backstage, Stoner Hive, Aus Music Scene, Mystic Sons and more.

Shake yourself from your trance, or get lost in a new one with SOMNIUM’s sophomore album– ‘To Be Is To Be Perceived’ out everywhere November 18.
