PRAISE FOR THE EMPTY THREATS

“Their music is adjacent to the psych-laden indie of Tame Impala and King Gizz, packaged in a unique way that feels distinctly that of [their own] — almost as if they’ve taken some of the genre’s best bits, jammed it with their own sounds, and made this polished new direction.”  PILERATS

I feel the spirit of Jim Morrison through this. I’m sure The Lizard King would approve.
— Gemma Pike, Double J

You may know The Empty Threats as that band with “some cheeky clarinet and a larger-than-life frontman but…The Empty Threats show us that there’s a lot more to the band than pure psychedelia.” – This Is Radelaide

See what others are saying…

Adelaide’s captivating neo-psych rock group The Empty Threats have just dropped the official music video for their latest single ‘U‘, which they released last week via South Australia’s newest indie-label PAK Music. Watch the video HERE.

‘U’ is the first of two single releases ahead of their forthcoming self-titled EP, which is set for release in late September. It was written and recorded alongside guitarist/producer Matt Schultz (also of Tiles) throughout 2020’s COVID-fuelled South Australian lockdowns — which served as the EP’s main creative inspiration. The greatly anticipated follow-up up to 2019’s ‘Ablutions’ touches on the “interpersonal dilemmas and struggling personal relationships that [the band were dealing with] throughout the year“.

Praised by South Australian icons West Thebarton as one of their favourite Adelaide-based acts, ‘Empties’ have quickly become known amongst the Adelaide music community for consistently putting on an electrifying live performance. In the past 18 months alone, they’ve shared the stage with some of Australia’s best psych-rock groups including Methyl EthylA Swayze & The GhostsThe Babe Rainbow and The Vanns.

The Empty Threats are celebrating the launch of ‘U’ to a sold-out crowd in this Saturday night at Adelaide’s JIVE (which recently crowdfunded over $70,000 to keep it’s doors open). Empties will be supported by post-punk rockers Coldwave + dreamy songstress Keeskea.

ABOUT THE MUSIC VIDEO

The music video for ‘U’ was produced by filmmaker Conor Mercury (DRUID FLUIDS and Ricky Albeck & The Belair Line Band), along the wide-open shores of Sellicks Beach on South Australia’s picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula. Enigmatic front man Stuart Patterson (also of Placement and Dead Roo) spent most of his childhood here. He explains:

“This location represents a safe space in my mind, one where I can always reconnect with myself without worrying about societal pressures. It was the perfect filming location for this song, which is all about the journey of self-reflection feeling suppressed and alone in an ever-changing society.”

Touching on the video’s creative direction, Stu explains that the latter half of the video – featuring the sudden appearance of a sea monster [as played by contemporary dancer Andrew Barnes] – is a visual representation of finding an emotional outlet and “the human need for social connection and…how vital communication through physical means, such as holding hands or dancing, is for us all.”
