Freewheeling DIY heroes King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announce a rave set at Fed Square this Friday, 24 October.

King Gizzard make techno now?? That’s right: live, unscripted, improvised electronic music using their eurorack-modular setups. For casual King Gizz fans, this is outrageous, even for a band known to genre-hop as much as they do. “Aren’t they a rock band?” “Judas!” For folks who follow the band closely, this has been a long time coming and many years in the making.

Frontman Stu Mackenzie shares, “Come on down. Freak out with us. You ain’t never seen this many patch cables in your life.”

The free-all-ages event will be the debut of their rave set in Aus and the band’s first show on home soil in over two years. Taking place at Fed Square, Melbourne’s home of free live music, the King Gizzard rave set follows recent performances from Eddy Current Suppression Ring, KNEECAP, Glass Beams, and Caribou, which have seen huge numbers turning out to dance in the iconic public square.

King Gizzard will be supported by Merve, a trailblazer within the underground dance music community. Now Berlin-based, the Naarm/Melbourne native has performed at some of Australia’s biggest stages. From sweaty underground basement parties to sold-out large-scale festival stages, a set from Merve will pull you in and take you on a journey.

The rave set comes ahead of King Gizzard’s December tour, which will see them play across multiple nights in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Playing songs from their vast catalogue, including the 2025 album, Phantom Island, the tour includes performances at the Sydney Opera House and Sidney Myer Music Bowl, with a 29-piece orchestra led by conductor and musical director Chad Kelly, in addition to full-length rock shows.

Their ability to switch from a synth-heavy, electronic-influenced rave set to conductor-led orchestral shows and raw rock-and-roll mayhem is another example of why King Gizzard are one of the most prolific and unpredictable bands of our time. Fifteen years and 27 albums into their epic quest, you might think they’d be running out of new frontiers to traverse, new concepts to explore, new ways to radically reshape their paradigm. Their upcoming Australian shows prove the opposite is true, showcasing their latest record, Phantom Island, the 27th entry into the Gizzard Discovery, as not a fixed statement, but as a living, evolving body of work that transforms with each performance and setting.

Prepare to dance and witness KGLW evolve in real time this Friday, 24 October, as they navigate a fully modular synthesis table that shares the same beating heart of their ethos: ambitious, improvised, and epiphanic.
