There’s something beautifully unhinged about the way Nate Amos makes music. Under the moniker This Is Lorelei, the songwriter has built a world where bedroom pop, indie rock, folk traditions and warped Americana collide — a place where heartbreak, humour, strange characters and blurry memories all coexist.
Now, following the breakout success of 2024’s Box for Buddy, Box for Star, Amos returns with his most ambitious statement yet: The Singer in My Band, arriving 11 September via Matador Records.
The latest taste of the record comes in the form of “Oh No Now My”, a track that feels like a transmission from somewhere between the past and the future. Built around glitching vocal harmonies and decaying textures, the song transforms into one of the album’s biggest moments — an anthem that somehow sounds both ancient and completely alien.
Accompanied by a haunting stop-motion video from Julia Fernandez, “Oh No Now My” captures the strange emotional universe Amos has become known for.

For Amos, The Singer in My Band is the sound of life lived in motion. Written while touring internationally with both This Is Lorelei and his band Water From Your Eyes, the record captures the strange limbo of endless highways, unfamiliar cities and quiet moments staring out a van window.
Rather than being written traditionally at home with a guitar or computer, these songs slowly developed as ideas floating around in Amos’ head — fragments of stories, characters and emotions collected along the way.
“I sent my dad the album after I finished it, and he said it was kind of an ‘on the road beatnik’ album and that reframed it for me,” Amos explains. “It really is like a collection of chaotic experiences that you have while travelling. They’re also very much little works of fiction with elements of truth to them.”
And those fictional worlds are filled with unforgettable characters — Billy, Joey, Genevieve, Sarah and Buddy — figures who drift through the album’s landscapes like scenes from a forgotten American road movie. They’re unreliable narrators telling stories that feel exaggerated, messy and strangely familiar.
That tension between reality and fiction is where This Is Lorelei thrives.
Amos’ previous record, Box for Buddy, Box for Star, introduced listeners to his sharp songwriting instincts and genre-blurring approach. The album became a word-of-mouth favourite, later receiving a deluxe edition featuring collaborations with artists including MJ Lenderman, Hayley Williams and Jeff Tweedy.
With The Singer in My Band, Amos strips things back while expanding the emotional landscape. Recorded largely in his apartment, with final touches completed at his parents’ home in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, the album was written, produced and performed almost entirely by Amos himself.
The record also features contributions from his family, including a banjo performance from his father Bob Amos, a respected bluegrass musician, alongside vocals from his sister Sarah Amos and partner Al Nardo.
At its core, The Singer in My Band is an album about songwriting itself — about carrying influences forward while reshaping them into something entirely personal. Amos draws inspiration from bluegrass, not necessarily as a sound, but as a philosophy.
“There’s a simplicity to bluegrass, where there are very particular rules and a very particular box — songs have to stand up by themselves in terms of melody, lyrics and chord progression,” he says.
It’s that balance between tradition and experimentation that makes This Is Lorelei so compelling. The songs feel familiar without ever sounding predictable — like half-remembered stories overheard somewhere between a roadside diner and a late-night show.
As Amos takes The Singer in My Band around the world, joining tours with Bleachers and others, he continues to cement his place as one of indie music’s most unpredictable and inventive voices.
