PRAISE FOR THE INEVITABLE END (2014)

“This is a stunning record, principally because of its narrative arc and complete cohesion–it’s easy to see why they’re leaving the traditional format if they’ve perfected it.”
Line of Best Fit (9/10)

“The Inevitable End is a bittersweet triumph.”

“[Röyksopp have] given us quite the curtain call.”
The Brag (4.5/5)

“The Inevitable End plays like the most uplifting of funerals, an emotional ride of joy, pain, bliss, love and hope.”

As human beings, what we don’t know vastly overshadows what we do know. As teenagers, we would discuss our own fascination and preoccupation with the infinite and the impossible – the most profound mysteries of life.” – Svein Berge & Torbjørn Brundtland
Today, Röyksopp unveil Profound Mysteries, an expanded creative universe and a prodigious conceptual project accompanied by the release of ‘Impossible‘ featuring Alison Goldfrapp.

Today’s announcement follows yesterday’s world-first radio play of ‘Impossible’ on Double J‘s Mornings with Zan Rowe, who remarked of the track: “There’s something about Röyksopp, they just manage to make huge songs that are sexy and dark and dirty and emotional… all at once. [‘Impossible’] is their latest opus, and it is an opus.

The first human voice to be heard on Profound Mysteries, Goldfrapp says “It’s been great working with the wonderful Svein & Torbjørn from Röyksopp. I’ve been a fan of their music for years and it was a fascinating joy creating ‘Impossible’ together. I truly hope everyone enjoys the track as there’s more to come.” A third artefact and visualiser designed by Australian contemporary artist Jonathan Zawada (FlumeDua LipaThe Presets) expand the collection.

The collaboration lands on the heels of two previously released installments, both of which arrived last month with little in the way of explanation or context. On January 1st, 2022 Röyksopp launched the film ‘(Nothing But) Ashes…‘ and fans were encouraged to ‘Press «R»‘. Alongside the Kasper Häggström-directed short film BJA, a second piece of music, ‘The Ladder‘, was released. All elements are accessible through the Profound Mysteries portal.

Back in 2014, Röyksopp released what was billed as their final album, The Inevitable End. While Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland vowed to continue making music together, they announced that this was “goodbye to the traditional album format”. Since then, the Norwegian electronic duo remained busy, soundtracking a comedy theatre show based on the work of Franz Kafka, contributing to Rick Rubin’s Star Wars Headspace compilation, and dipping into their archives for the Lost Tapes reissue series.
