DANNY ELFMAN SHARES NEW SONG “LOVE IN THE TIME OF COVID”

by the partae February 12, 2021
written by the partae

“There’s certainly nothing light-hearted or funny about Covid, but I can still poke a little fun
at the crazy way social isolation has changed our lives in every way shape and form…”
  – Danny Elfman on “Love In The Time of Covid”

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, composer, singer and songwriter Danny Elfman is sharing his new song “Love In The Time Of Covid”. The short film accompanying the track is directed by German filmmaker and photographer Sven Gutjahr and Elfman’s creative director Berit Gilma. It tells a somewhat bizarre story of longing for intimacy in today’s socially isolated world in a very unique way.

Filmed in Berlin, the video’s main character is played by Scottish transgender performer Shrek 666 who wears extensive makeup and prosthetics. The non-human form echoes the universal surrealism of life during lockdown. Elfman also appears in a few surprise cameos in the video.

Listen and watch it HERE.

“There’s certainly nothing light-hearted or funny about Covid, but I can still poke a little fun at the crazy way social isolation has changed our lives in every way shape and form, and that’s what “Love In The Time of Covid” is about,” Elfman explains. “An expression of the borderline madness that so many of us have been experiencing. Lord knows I have. I wrote it from the view point of a young man going crazy in his apartment. Creators Gutjahr and Gilma had the idea to turn the lead character into a green skinned animal-like creature. As many us feel completely alienated in this insane new world we live in, and I thought it was an interesting idea.”

“Love In The Time Of Covid” features vocals, guitars and synths by Elfman, drums by Josh Freese, guitars by Nili Brosh, bass by Stu Brooks, percussion by Sidney Hopson and strings by the Lyris Quartet. It was executive produced by Laura Engel and the project producer was Melisa McGregor. Throughout this year Elfman will continue to release songs on the eleventh day of the month. The number 11 has always had significance to Elfman, with his name Elf meaning “eleven” in German.

Last month Elfman released “Sorry”. “The anger-fueled track pulls from industrial and prog-rock influences to create an uneasy atmosphere that’s made even more unnerving with a jarring video animated by Jesse Kanda,” said SPIN. Kanda (Arca, FKA Twigs, Bjork) originally created the video’s intricate animation as a visual backdrop for Elfman’s live performance of the song for the now postponed Coachella 2020.

Watch it HERE.

A four-time Oscar nominee and Grammy winner, Elfman has scored over 100 films including: Milk (Oscar nominated), Good Will Hunting (Oscar nominated), Big Fish (Oscar nominated), Men in Black (Oscar nominated), Edward Scissorhands, Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Spider-Man, Silver Lining’s Playbook and many more.

GORDI & ALEX LAHEY TEAM UP TO RELEASE ‘DINO’S’ IN TIME FOR VALENTINE’S DAY, WITH VIDEO

by the partae February 12, 2021
written by the partae
  • Dino’s (pronounced Dean – o’s) song and video out today
  • First joint single release from Gordi and Alex Lahey
  • Inspired by Nashville dive-bar of same name
  • Gordi’s show at The Forum in Melbourne next week has now sold out, with a new show added for Friday March 12
Gordi and Alex Lahey team up to release ‘Dino’s’ – a big, open-hearted song – just in time for Valentine’s Day. Many moons in the making, ‘Dino’s’ was inspired by the much-loved Nashville dive-bar of the same name from the pair’s time there in 2018. It arrives with an accompanying video from Melbourne based director and creative, Nick Mckk. Mimicking the look and feel of the dive-bar, the video spotlights the evocative and playful nature of the song and features cameos from both artists as a cast of affable local oddities.

VIDEO: ‘Dino’s’ by Gordi x Alex Lahey
“This song has been two and a half years in the making. We wrote it on a very humid summer’s day in Nashville before breaking for late night pasta and beer.”
Premiered yesterday on triple j Breakfast, much of the original recording of ‘Dino’s’ still exists from that humid Summer’s day in another world, although the song did later go through a series of final revisions in Sydney, Eau Claire and Melbourne.
“The song is inspired by the East Nashville dive bar institution ‘Dino’s’, which we both frequent on our visits to the city. The eccentricity of Dino’s makes it a place where it feels like anything could happen and anyone could walk through the door. The song captures the feeling of being totally captivated by the person sitting across from you while the world spins madly on. Anyone who has been to Dino’s knows that there is genuinely a Dolly Parton cardboard cut-out that lives in the bar and she is Nashville icon.”
Both artists have enjoyed prolific, successful careers globally. Gordi’s second record Our Two Skins was released in June last year and crowned a triple j feature album; making its debut into the Top 20 of the ARIA Albums Chart. It was also nominated for an ARIA Award and two J Awards – recognition of its depth, intricacy and beauty.

In addition to releasing her second record last year, Gordi also balanced work as a doctor, donning the scrubs to assist with under-staffed local hospitals in Melbourne during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She performed a debut, globally broadcast show at the Sydney Opera House, launched her very own VR immersive album experience titled Buried City and even managed to sneak in some shows at year’s end for fans in NSW. She is currently touring Australia for Our Two Skins and has just added a second show for Melbourne fans after selling out her forthcoming February date at The Forum. The new show will take place on March 12.

Alex Lahey broke through in 2016 with her hit song “You Don’t Think You Like People Like Me”, which earned her a slew of positive press including best new track on Pitchfork. Her debut record I Love You Like A Brother and follow up The Best Of Luck Club earnt her similar acclaim locally and internationally along with a performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers and main stage slots at festivals including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Splendour In The Grass. With over 50 million streams to her name, three ARIA nominations, four Hottest 100 tracks and a gold-certified single for ‘Every Day’s The Weekend’ Lahey is one of Australia’s finest singer-songwriters.

Together, the pair have collaborated on a number of tracks for other artists – including co-writing a track for US pop-punk artist Maggie Lindemann and a forthcoming track for Annie Hamilton. ‘Dino’s’ highlights their natural prowess as singer-songwriters and sees their vocals coalesce in and around each other to create a delectable pop gem.

Mysteryland has high hopes that they will be able to transform the former Floriade site in Haarlemmermeer into a magical festival site again from 27 to 29 August and is announcing the start of its ticket sales. The longest-running electronic music festival in the world expects to sell out quickly.

Over 95% of Mysteryland’s loyal visitors have chosen to keep last year’s ticket for the 2021 edition. Mysteryland therefore wants to give its fans a chance to be the first to get a hand on the remaining tickets via an exclusive pre-sale. The fans can register via Mysteryland’s website until 21 February 12PM CET.

The largest dance festival in leading festival country the Netherlands, where headliners such as Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, Nora En Pure, Sven Väth, and Carl Cox previously performed, is hopeful that it will be able to organise an edition this year, despite the rescheduling of last year’s edition.

Milan Raven, Managing Director of ID&T Events: “We are very much looking forward to the moment we can celebrate life together with our visitors. We realize that it’s still uncertain if we can go ahead, but with all the tools that the Dutch government has at its disposal, we are looking at a brighter future than last year. We notice that many people yearn for some form of being together again and are looking for an escape from reality. There’s no place you can do this better than at Mysteryland.”

Mysteryland is known as the perfect end to the festival summer. Every year more than 300 artists from all kinds of different genres perform, from house, deep-house, big room, bass, techno, trap, trance, and minimal to hardstyle, hardcore, R&B, and hip hop. With more than 20 stages, there is something for everyone’s taste. Artistic stages range from open-air dance floors to huge tents with stellar laser shows and state of the art sound. As it’s their tradition to end with a bang on the Saturday and Sunday evenings, Mysteryland has their legendary end-shows full of fireworks on The Main Stage and Q-dance stage.

In addition to the many music stages, there is always much more to discover on the festival site. Many artfully lit paths lead you through forests and fields to hidden places to chill. There are also various art installations, food courts, and unexpected encounters with like-minded people and artists who can surprise you. In addition, there is also lots to explore for spiritual visitors, from cocoa ceremonies and meditation sessions to massages and yoga.

The real diehards can complete their festival weekend by staying at the campsite. Mysteryland camping visitors get an extra festival day on Friday and get a new dimension to their festival experience during the after-parties. There is also a late-night silent disco that goes on for anyone who can’t get enough. For the early birds, there is morning yoga on the camping plaza and at the market, you can have your festival outfit pimped and your hair styled in the latest trends.

Registration for the exclusive pre-sale starts today via mysteryland.nl/register. Fans can register until 21 February 12PM. If Mysteryland 2021 can’t take place this year, visitors have the option for a refund of the ticket.

OZZY OSBOURNE RELEASES ANIMATED VIDEO FOR IT’S A RAID FEAT. POST MALONE SONG IS THE FINAL RELEASE FROM ORDINARY MAN

OZZY OSBOURNE RELEASES ANIMATED VIDEO FOR IT’S A RAID FEAT. POST MALONE SONG IS THE FINAL RELEASE FROM ORDINARY MAN

by the partae February 12, 2021
written by the partae

OZZY OSBOURNE has premiered a new animated video for It’s A Raid from his #4 ARIA debut record, ORDINARY MAN released in 2020.

At a SiriusXM listening party last year to celebrate the release of ORDINARY MAN (Epic Records / Sony Music Australia) OZZY recounted the song’s inspiration. While recording Black Sabbath’s VOL. 4 in Bel Air, California, OSBOURNE triggered the home’s security alarm and police surrounded the home, which he says had “piles of marijuana and cocaine.” OSBOURNE adds, “I’m shouting, ‘IT’S A FUCKIN’ RAIIIIID,” before hiding the drugs and ingesting cocaine while hiding in one of the home’s bathrooms.”

In the video, directed by Tomas Lenert, OZZY and Post Malone team up for a truly wild ride. The clip begins with OSBOURNE and Malone at the infamous Bel Air, CA house (which served as the inspiration for the song) before they lead police through the streets of the city and passing iconic Los Angeles landmarks on their journey.

“A couple of years ago I didn’t even know who Post Malone was,” OZZY says. “Since then we’ve worked together on two studio tracks and have performed together twice. Understandably Covid-19 made it difficult to get together to shoot a music video for ‘It’s a Raid’ so we opted for this wildly imagined animated video for the final single from the ORDINARY MAN album.” OZZY, who’s been in the studio working on a new album with producer Andrew Watt, adds that he “can’t wait to for everyone to hear my new music.”

This marks the second duet with Malone. The two previously teamed on Take What You Want from his Hollywood’s Bleeding album (which they also performed at last year’s American Music Awards).  The track was produced by Watt, who collaborated with OSBOURNE for ORDINARY MAN as both producer and co-writer.

Here’s some critical feedback on It’s A Raid:

“is a blitz of screaming metal that finds Osbourne in classic spooky grandpa mode, wailing about voices breathing through the phone, never feeling alone and the horrifying revelation that God is actually Satan, and he’s waiting right here for you. ‘Out in Hollywood, I’ve been locked up for seven days/ I’m never coming out/ Why do i feel my life accelerate/ I’m never coming down,’ Osbourne sings on the chorus over raging, double-kick drums and a wall of high-speed guitars. Leaving behind his hip-hop cadence, Posty straight up sings in his best Ozzy bellow, lamenting, ‘Outside my window, there’s a silhouette/ My rifle’s right beside my bed/ Hold on, I’m runnin’ out of cigarettes/ F–k!’  The thundering track ends with a final raging chorus featuring both singers and some flat-out shouting of the title over a light speed guitar solo.” – Billboard
“the thrashy new track, Osbourne takes the lead with Malone serving as Osbourne’s backup singer and hype man for the rest of the track.” – Rolling Stone
“the high-energy number ‘It’s a Raid.’ The blistering rocker lands among the eleven tracks on Osbourne’s twelfth solo album Ordinary Man…A punky but catchy burst of audio, it’s perhaps the most adrenaline-fueled of the growing collaborations between the “Prince of Darkness” and the rock-indebted rapper.” – Loudwire

“The explicit track is set at a breakneck tempo and features Ozzy and Malone trading lines before unfolding into a half-time crawl in the bridge.” – IHeart

“The song is a banger…” – Spin

In its first week of release, the critically acclaimed ORDINARY MAN—OSBOURNE’s first new solo album in ten years–was the #1 rock album in the world, topping multiple charts in its triumphant first week of release.  Worldwide, ORDINARY MAN entered the charts in the Top Ten in seven countries (including America and the U.K.) and #4 on the ARIA chart, making it the highest charting album of OZZY’s career.ORDINARY MAN marks OSBOURNE’s first new solo music in almost 10 years.  Recorded in Los Angeles, the album features producer Andrew Watt on guitars, Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses) on bass and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) on drums.  Beyond the core band, ORDINARY MAN, features a who’s-who of OZZY friends and collaborators including Elton John, Slash, Post Malone and Tom Morello.

Imagine FIIN’s Perfect Sunday Afternoon With New Single ‘A Better Way.’ Out Now on Ultra Records

by the partae February 12, 2021
written by the partae

Artists: FIIN
Title: A Better Way
Label: Ultra Records

Download / Stream

Miami-based talent FIIN makes a triumphant 2021 debut with a new single “A Better Way,” which sees him exploring a new sound with its mellow and minimalistic vibe. The track opens with ethereal melodies and instrumental synths, building slowly into a dreamy and groovy vibe that the producer describes as evoking a relaxed Sunday afternoon. Tribal vocals add a touch of jungle-like mysticism to it, taking listeners to a chill day relaxing on a beach. The single follows FIIN‘s 2020 streak of singles, including “Days Like This,” “Everything,” featuring Nathan Nicholson, “Le Crocodile” and “Still In The Storm” with Brigado Crew and Jinadu. “A Better Way” is the perfect example of simplicity being the key to success.

“A very simple track, but every sound is where it needs to be. For me it’s the perfect Sunday afternoon track, my favorite day of the week.” – FIIN

FIIN earned his stripes as the youngest resident of Heart Nightclub and played alongside the best world-class DJs. Since then, he has impromptu b2b sets with Paco Osuna, Marco Faraone, Hot Since 82, Technasia, Butch, Bontan, and Sis. FIIN‘s music combines a sexy, smooth, and groovy style with an upbeat techy rhythm. He takes risks and succeeds with originality. Tropical rhythms, warm synth lines, melodic grooves, and funky textures come together in masterful style. FIIN‘s hunger and drive are outmatched only by his love for the scene. It’s all or nothing, and nothing was never an option.

Hello Satellites summons big energy on new electro-pop number ‘No Delivery’ lifted from her forthcoming album There Is A Field

by the partae February 11, 2021
written by the partae

Melbourne artist Eva Popov has been writing, producing and performing adventurous inimitable indie pop as Hello Satellites for over a decade now. Eva’s expansive and genre bending sound has traversed many realms of the music landscape, undulating seamlessly through folk, pop, neoclassical and experimental tropes across three studio albums, each navigating the world with the sure-footedness of a true exploratory artist. Now, the sonic nomad is excited to reveal her latest offering ‘No Delivery’ lifted from her forthcoming 2021 album There Is A Field.

Out today, ‘No Delivery’ is a cold plunge into the addictive nature of excessive screen time and a danceable reminder about looking beyond palm-sized validation. Beckoning horns signpost snappy wake-up calls and self-help mantras before breaking into a cruisey rhythm you can’t help but succumb to. Recorded with long-time collaborator Nick Huggins (Seagull; Dirty Three) and featuring drums by Heath Robertson and sax by Flora Carbo, the self-produced disco confessional is the second taste of Hello Satellites’ anticipated fourth studio album There Is a Field, following from last year’s moody folk narrative, ‘Thief’.

“No Delivery is a 2.38 minute electronic pop experiment about being addicted to my phone, dopamine hits and magical thinking. I have watched other people do amazing things and live amazing lives whilst I waited for some sort of love hit to come through the screen and solve everything. This song was written as a guitar song to remind myself that nothing was going to be given to me and that I was just going to have to go out into the world and do stuff as my own imperfect self and fail and feel things. I had a lot of fun remaking this song as an obnoxious disco track.”
– Eva Popov, Hello Satellites

Set to be released independently this autumn, There Is A Field sees Hello Satellites harnessing the magic within the mundane. Shaped by the limitations of a long Melbourne lockdown, the record explores vast expansive moments hidden in the nooks and crannies of Popov’s own home and mind. “Each song was a joyous, wide open space to occupy, whilst the outside world felt so closed and restricted under lockdown” Popov explains, noting walk-in robe vocal takes, internet virtual choir collaborations and guitar and piano recordings snatched up in the quiet, stolen moments of working motherhood. The result is a wondrously vibrant world of imagination and awe, candidly unearthed from the most uninspiring of circumstances.

‘No Delivery’ Lyrics
It cannot be brought to me
It cannot be brought to me
There is no delivery
It won’t be brought to me

Tried to make it come to good
Tried to give it all I could
But this isn’t Hollywood
Hollywood

See what I want walking right on by
See what I want down a different street, someone else’s life
But I look, pictures on a screen
Scrolling on and on and on what I could have been

It cannot be brought to me
It cannot be brought to me
No one’s gonna give it for free
It won’t be brought to me

Tried to say the magic words
So the hurting wouldn’t hurt
So it wouldn’t hurt
But the magic didn’t work

See what I want . . .

Come on, Come on Come on (etc)
And stop observing
Come on Come on Come on,
And start to live
Come on Come on Come on
It may be damaged
Come on Come on Come on
It’s what you’ve got to give

Photo Credit: Kovi Konowiecki PRAISE FOR HAND HABITS "placeholder is an impressive piece of craftsmanship, not only in its lyrics but in its sparkling production and masterly sense of melody-for such wistful songs, they have an uncanny ability to get stuck in your head." - New Yorker "An album full of songs that showcase Duffy's gifts front and center... Peaceful, calming, with a hint of something else underneath the surface." - Rolling Stone "Meg Duffy is your favorite indie rocker's favorite guitarist... Duffy plumbs new depths of intimacy when it comes to the topics of anxiety, loss, and forgiveness." - Pitchfork "Duffy pays scrupulous attention to detail in songs that function like intricate dioramas... On placeholder, the singer contemplates the fragility of human relationships and the hard-to-stomach reality that many of the people, experiences and places we've loved are only stepping stones on a journey of self-discovery." - NPR "Remarkable and inquisitive...recalls the piercing lucidity of Angel Olsen, the confidence of Sharon Van Etten." -Stereogum "Lulling, frank revelations on the complexities of desire." - The FADER "placeholder is more atmospheric than show-offy, in which Duffy's tasteful, restrained playing supports the delicate melodies and reflective lyrics. " - UPROXX "A vessel of complex, ever-evolving emotion, warm vocals and dexterous guitar shrieks." - Paste "Achingly beautiful and poignant... profoundly articulated and relatable." - Gorilla vs Bear Hand Habits, the project of Meg Duffy (they/them), has shared a cover of Neil Young's 'i believe in you,' the latest from their upcoming dirt EP. dirt finds the songwriter exploring themes of growth and finding ways to let go of the parts of their past that no longer serve them. It illuminates Duffy's attempts to evolve beyond the confines of their past. Last month Hand Habits shared a video for the EP's A-Side, '4th of july,' which NPR's Bob Boilen called "their best song ever," and Stereogum named the best song of the week upon its release saying "Meg Duffy has leveled up with every Hand Habits album and it looks as though they're about to do it again." The EP, which was co-produced by Duffy and Sasami Ashworth and Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), is available for pre-order now and due February 19th via Milk! Records / Remote Control. While their most recent album placeholder saw them working with producer Brad Cook at Justin Vernon's April Base Studios and garnering praise from such outlets as NPR which called the work "their most fully realized statement" and the Los Angeles Times which praised the work as a "virtually seamless country rock album, with verses moving fluidly into choruses that travel unimpeded across sparkling, architecturally sophisticated bridges." dirt showcases an artist returning to the fertile creative ground of their home.   However, this time around home-recording didn't necessarily mean working in isolation. Duffy had relocated to a shared living situation in Los Angeles with musicians Sasami Ashworth and Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), which also housed Thomas' studio. The resulting songs showcase this creatively collaborative environment, with Ashworth co-producing the lead single and Thomas co-producing 'i believe in you'. Such is the strength of this relationship, in fact, that this new single just may serve as a bridge toward a greater body of work the three will ultimately create together. The sonic texture of '4th of july' complements its lyrical journey, with a simple and sparse introduction marked by a slow burn crescendo hinting at the rupture to come, followed by an ecstatic wail of transcendent emotion. Fittingly, it concludes with a reprise of the beginning but this time altered by new sounds, suggesting a new perspective. Similarly, Duffy breathes new life into the Young staple, 'i believe in you,' adding a foreboding weight and impact to the long-familiar words. For Duffy, the process of recording and the song's themes of growth through trust dovetailed perfectly. PRAISE FOR HAND HABITS

“placeholder is an impressive piece of craftsmanship, not only in its lyrics but in its sparkling production and masterly sense of melody-for such wistful songs, they have an uncanny ability to get stuck in your head.” – New Yorker

“An album full of songs that showcase Duffy’s gifts front and center… Peaceful, calming, with a hint of something else underneath the surface.” – Rolling Stone

“Meg Duffy is your favorite indie rocker’s favorite guitarist… Duffy plumbs new depths of intimacy when it comes to the topics of anxiety, loss, and forgiveness.” – Pitchfork

“Duffy pays scrupulous attention to detail in songs that function like intricate dioramas… On placeholder, the singer contemplates the fragility of human relationships and the hard-to-stomach reality that many of the people, experiences and places we’ve loved are only stepping stones on a journey of self-discovery.” – NPR

“Remarkable and inquisitive…recalls the piercing lucidity of Angel Olsen, the confidence of Sharon Van Etten.” -Stereogum

“Lulling, frank revelations on the complexities of desire.” – The FADER

“placeholder is more atmospheric than show-offy, in which Duffy’s tasteful, restrained playing supports the delicate melodies and reflective lyrics. “ – UPROXX

“A vessel of complex, ever-evolving emotion, warm vocals and dexterous guitar shrieks.” – Paste

“Achingly beautiful and poignant… profoundly articulated and relatable.” – Gorilla vs Bear

Hand Habits, the project of Meg Duffy (they/them), has shared a cover of Neil Young‘s ‘i believe in you,’ the latest from their upcoming dirt EP. dirt finds the songwriter exploring themes of growth and finding ways to let go of the parts of their past that no longer serve them. It illuminates Duffy‘s attempts to evolve beyond the confines of their past.

Last month Hand Habits shared a video for the EP’s A-Side, ‘4th of july,’ which NPR’s Bob Boilen called “their best song ever,” and Stereogum named the best song of the week upon its release saying “Meg Duffy has leveled up with every Hand Habits album and it looks as though they’re about to do it again.”

The EP, which was co-produced by Duffy and Sasami Ashworth and Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), is available for pre-order now and due February 19th via Milk! Records / Remote Control.

While their most recent album placeholder saw them working with producer Brad Cook at Justin Vernon’s April Base Studios and garnering praise from such outlets as NPR which called the work “their most fully realized statement” and the Los Angeles Times which praised the work as a “virtually seamless country rock album, with verses moving fluidly into choruses that travel unimpeded across sparkling, architecturally sophisticated bridges.” dirt showcases an artist returning to the fertile creative ground of their home.

However, this time around home-recording didn’t necessarily mean working in isolation. Duffy had relocated to a shared living situation in Los Angeles with musicians Sasami Ashworth and Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), which also housed Thomas‘ studio. The resulting songs showcase this creatively collaborative environment, with Ashworth co-producing the lead single and Thomas co-producing ‘i believe in you’. Such is the strength of this relationship, in fact, that this new single just may serve as a bridge toward a greater body of work the three will ultimately create together.

The sonic texture of ‘4th of july’ complements its lyrical journey, with a simple and sparse introduction marked by a slow burn crescendo hinting at the rupture to come, followed by an ecstatic wail of transcendent emotion. Fittingly, it concludes with a reprise of the beginning but this time altered by new sounds, suggesting a new perspective.

Similarly, Duffy breathes new life into the Young staple, ‘i believe in you,’ adding a foreboding weight and impact to the long-familiar words.

For Duffy, the process of recording and the song’s themes of growth through trust dovetailed perfectly. As they note, “There’s a foundation, and when there’s a foundation there’s opportunity to reimagine structures; physical and otherwise.”

BRIJEAN Share new single & video ‘Hey Boy’ New album Feelings out February 26

Brijean – the Oakland-based duo of Brijean Murphy and Doug Stuart – presents the new single/video, ‘Hey Boy‘ from their forthcoming album, Feelings, out February 26th on Ghostly International. Following ‘Ocean,’ ‘Day Dreaming,’ and ‘Moody,’ ‘Hey Boy‘ radiates with a percussive, atmospheric energy. Murphy calls the charming track a “psychedelic guide — the exploration of finding what feels good — through sorrow, anxiety, apathy.” This mentality applies to Feelings on the whole: in these nebulous and verdant worlds of hazy melodies, feathery hooks, and percussive details, the songs simply want us to feel alive. Murphy, also an accomplished visual artist, illustrated and directed the video in collaboration with motion graphics artist Rose Biehl and producer Samantha Sartor. Throughout, Murphy’s vibrant animations of the duo dance and play across the screen.

Murphy explains the video process: “My visual art style really developed when I began making hand-drawn flyers for a nightclub in Oakland, California. I hosted a recurring jazz night every Tuesday for a few years. The bands were always amorphous and always centered around percussion. That left a lot of elasticity in the genre — the musicians were often rooted in different cultural and musical backgrounds (Salsa, Gospel, Blues, Hip Hop, etc.) — and in turn, that attracted a wide range of dancers and drinkers to fill the space. This music video is a homage to that club and its people, infused with some psychedelic and cheeky moments.

The idea of shared experience, though a virtual reality, had shifted my perspective of shared space, which informs the visuals. Seemingly isolated dancers move within the compartmentalized windows and grids of a surreal technicolor world. We’ve all found ourselves here in this time, sorting through complicated information and synthesizing our inherited and undulating present. For me, I’ve found comfort and inspiration in tethering to the playful stuff.”

Watch “Hey Boy” Video

Murphy – one of indie’s most in-demand percussionists (Poolside, Toro Y Moi, U.S. Girls) – and Stuart, who share backgrounds in jazz, Latin and soul music and were both fixtures in Oakland’s diverse music scene, began collaborating in 2018. Following the duo’s first sessions, which resulted in the mini-album Walkie Talkie (released in 2019 on Native Cat Recordings), Brijean continued collaborating in Oakland, inviting friends Chaz Bear, Tony Peppers, and Hamir Atwal, who all would end up contributing to the album. “We improvised on different feels for hours,” says Murphy. “Nothing quite developed at first but we had seeds. We re-opened the sessions a couple months later, after returning from tours, and spent a month developing the songs in a little 400 square foot cottage.”

The leap from 2019’s Walkie Talkie to Feelings is marked by a notable expanse in range and energy. Brijean’s signature sound — a golden-hued dream pop tropicalia of dazzling beats and honeyed vocals — elevates with the addition of live drummers, strings, and synths. The album also finds Murphy fully trusting in her strengths, not just as a percussionist, but as a songwriter and collaborator. “Valuing myself as elemental instead of an ‘aux’ percussionist, and the undoubted support and talents of Doug, encouraged me to both make this project and collaborate with many different people.”

Brijean wants you to move, physically, mentally, dimensionally; this is dance music for the mind, body, and soul. With Feelings, they’ve manifested a gentle collective space for respite, for self-reflection, for self-care, for uninhibited imagination and new possibilities.

Mia Dyson announces date changes for Parking Lots 15th Anniversary Australian East Coast 2021 tour!

by the partae February 11, 2021
written by the partae

Off the back of the recent 15-year anniversary reissue of her ARIA Award-winning 2005 album Parking Lots Australian icon Mia Dyson was penned to perform a run of East Coast Australian dates this March. Due to COVID restrictions, Mia has had to postpone all of her upcoming shows but is thrilled to still be able to celebrate the milestone with her VIC and NSW fans, albeit a little further down the road, at her newly rescheduled November dates.

The seasoned Australian artist will take to the road this November for shows across Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne and regional Victoria for her first live shows in well over a year. Tickets are on sale now and in limited COVID capacities, so be sure to get in quick. For those who already snagged tickets, these will be valid for the rescheduled dates.

“I’m so sad to say that due to forces beyond my control, I am having to postpone my Parking Lots tour to November. All your tickets will be valid for the new shows except Brisbane where we couldn’t make the routing work and ticket holders will be issued refunds. We’ll get you next time around.

Unfortunately, this also means I won’t be performing at Bluesfest.

I can’t wait to see you all when these shows finally do happen. Thanks for your support and patience.” – Mia Dyson

In her two-decade long career, Mia Dyson has been nominated for five ARIA Awards with Parking Lots taking out ‘Best Blues and Roots Album’ in 2005. She was the inaugural recipient of Double J’s Artist Of The Year at the 2014 J Awards following the release of her Australian classic LP Idyllwild and has had four albums up for AIR Awards with The Moment earning her a nomination for ‘Song Of The Year’ at the 2013 APRA Awards. Mia Dyson’s extensive career has seen her support the likes of Stevie Nicks, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and Joe Cocker, and most recently touring extensively with her supergroups Dyson Stringer Cloher.

Heading back into the studio in 2020 to revisit five songs from the album, Mia’s Parking Lots (Revisited) EP sheds new light on a selection of her favourite cuts from the record. From beloved single ‘Roll Me Out’ to the stunning homage of motherly love on ‘Rivers Wide’, and the simple yet captivating title track to the empowering ‘Choose’ and heartbreaking ‘I Meant Something To You Once’, the EP captures the sheer musical mastery of an artist who continues to redefine the blues and roots genre, 15 years on, with the rest of her expansive career still to come.

Introducing Madi Diaz

Introducing Madi Diaz

by the partae February 11, 2021
written by the partae

Nashville-based Madi Diaz marks a full restart of her artistic career with “Man In Me,” her poignant debut single/video for ANTI-. It’s a first taste of how Diaz has worked at perfecting the craft of delivering a full spectrum of emotions via songs stripped to their most confrontational and raw form. This song is produced by Diaz with additional production by Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Bon Iver).

Across reverberating guitar strums and light piano, Diaz’s voice is evocative as she makes frank observations about a past relationship: “Do you imagine me differently // Cause when I met you swore that you saw me // When you think I might be someone else // Does it turn you on.” As the track continues, Diaz’s vocals swell exponentially, only to be drawn back to a fading note.

’Man In Me’ was the first song I sat down to record for myself in about six years, which is the reason I thought it was so important to release first. It’s a very intimately visceral moment, a sort of play-by-play inner monologue, taking my first steps through a really hard time.” The accompanying video, directed by Stephen Kinigopoulos, “emphasises the intensity of a moment held and held and held. For me, this video is like holding a stare for so long that it hurts. It’s like knowing you should let go, but you keep holding on cause you can’t say ‘when,’ and playing with that tension lying right beneath the surface. You know something’s up, but you just can’t put your finger on it.”

Diaz was originally raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania surrounded by a family deeply immersed in music: her grandfather was a tenor in the Greenwich City Opera, both of her parents taught music lessons (piano, guitar and ukulele), her father played in a Zappa tribute band and her brother plays in a metal band. She moved to Philadelphia in her teens to have closer access to broader music education, before eventually enrolling in (and dropping out of) Berklee College of Music and moving to Nashville to more seriously pursue a career as a songwriter.

After cutting her teeth in writers rooms in Nashville, Diaz moved to Los Angeles honing her songwriting skills and playing in numerous projects. After a very tumultuous relationship and break up, she bought a truck and moved back to Nashville where she became a go-to songwriter. As things slowed down, Diaz felt she had the time and space to fully confront everything in her life with a newfound sense of clarity. Over the next two years, she wrote over 100 songs, one of which is “Man In Me.” The songwriting expertise she had developed over the years is now championed in her own strikingly original and emotional music.

Today The Lazy Eyes are thrilled to present their debut festival, Lazyfest, consisting of an under 18’s show during the day, followed by an 18+ later in the evening. Tickets available HERE.

Programmed by the band with a lineup featuring Stevan and MAY-A, the festival is built on a foundation of giving younger fans a chance to see live music in real venues, and The Lazy Eyes are bringing their friends along for the ride.

The band has this to say: “Lazyfest is our vision for something we would’ve loved to have when we were younger. When we were growing up around the music scene, there never seemed to be any opportunities for the underage crowd to watch, let alone play music in “real venues”. We would find lot’s of workarounds to be able to play, some of them which will remain undisclosed ;). Shoutout to MCA Genext who put on such an amazing youths only event that really helped shape our band as well as so many others. That was a real diamond in the rough. When we were given the opportunity to make Lazyfest, we tried to satisfy every bit of our younger selves imaginations.

We met Stevan and his crew at Bigsound 2019 and it was an instant connection. We just bonded over the same music and we had mutual friends. He’s such a funny dude and we are always amazed by how much energy he has on and off stage. Stoked to have him on board. We went to highschool with MAY-A, so we had loads of run-ins with her on our long journey through school. Back then it was all about collaborating and joining everyone’s band and project to help people finish music assessments and stuff. It’s such a full circle moment playing with her again for the first ever Lazyfest!”

Lazyfest is made possible by funding from Create NSW‘s Play the City (Sydney) grant.

The show will be run in a government approved, Covid-safe set up at Riverstage. Whilst the venue normally can hold over 9,000 people, tickets will be capped at 4,000 due to capacity restrictions. The Synthony Australian Tour has only been possible thanks to the support of the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – an Australian Government initiative. “We certainly would not be putting on this show without the RISE funding support from the Australian Government.  This partnership has given us the confidence to invest, take risk and put on events that will see some artists and suppliers secure their first job and income after a very long break in event activity” said Carroll. Eager dance music fans around Brisbane will have one hand in the air and one hand on the mouse, hovering over the ‘Buy Tickets’ button as the tickets are released on: Friday 19th February, 11am AEST.  With a ‘One Night Only’ show and restricted numbers, fans will need to get in quickly to secure their spot.

Guests are urged register for the pre-sale at:  www.synthony.com

About Synthony

Founded in 2017 by DJ and producer, Erika Amoore and fellow Kiwi David Elmsly, Synthony sold out its first ever show at the Auckland Town Hall to a packed house and unprecedented reviews.  The show’s creation brought together key New Zealand talent, with Peter Thomas, conductor and music director of the Auckland Symphony Orchestra believing in the unique concept and enlisting the services of Ryan Youens, an arranger with hundreds of professional credits to his name, including film scores for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug.

After sold-out events at Auckland Town Hall in 2017 and 2018, Duco Events, a major event promoter with a 16-year track-record, purchased the concept with an ambitious long-term vision to expand the event from one city to multiple venues and cities across the globe.  In 2019, they took the show to Brisbane, Australia and also sold out five shows across NZ later that year.  Over six shows, four Orchestras and hundreds of musicians played to over 14,000 fans in 2019.

In 2020, Synthony staged its biggest ever NZ-wide tour, supporting the live music industry’s recovery post COVID19.  Synthony returns to Australia this April for its first outdoor show at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne, followed by Brisbane in May with other Australian cities to be announced, followed by other international markets.

Decibel Open Air shares full lineup for 2021 edition in September with Marco Carola, Nina Kraviz and more

Decibel Open Air reveals the full line-up for the 2021 edition, taking place on the 11th and 12th September in Cascine Park in Florence, Italy.

New names include Marco Carola, Nina Kraviz, Peggy Gou, Mathame, Stephan Jolk, T78, Brina Knauss, Marc Maya, Viviana Casanova, Toni Varga, Pôngo and Mattia Trani, while the most crazy and colourful party in all the world, elrow, will also be at Decibel Open Air with a very exclusive stage of their own.

There is a whiff of optimism in the air as the festival world sets its sights on a huge rebirth in late summer and adding to that hope that we can return to some sort of normality is the news that Italian heavyweight Decibel Open Air is back.
This famous event has two stages across two days at a massive outdoor space in Italy with all the beautiful food and extra stuff that you would expect. Of course, the people will be just as cool and cultured as the line up and the green space welcomes this final wave of names after the first one in December when Paul Kalkbrenner (live), 999999999 (live), Amelie Lens, Ben Klock, Fisher, Gioli & Assia (live), Giorgia Angiuli (live), Kölsch, Michael Bibi, Pan-Pot, Reinier Zonneveld (live), Richie Hawtin and Wade were all announced.

The Italian techno titan, Marco Carola, is one of the biggest names in the electronic scene. He’s head of Music On, one of the most loved parties in Ibiza and in the world. He is joined by undisputed talent, Nina Kraviz, a DJ, producer, songwriter and vocalist who has her own acid techno sound. Since 2014 she has been running the трип record label, a real hub for new talents and undiscovered music. Next up, through a regular stream of high quality mixes Peggy Gou has become a real star of the underground with her sets across the world filled with colourful house, disco and techno and plenty of personality.
Add in further names like Mathame, Stephan Jolk, T78, Brina Knauss, Marc Maya, Viviana Casanova, Toni Varga, Pôngo and Mattia Trani and you have a much-anticipated event that will be fantastic time of celebration for all music lovers.
