Where are you currently based?

I am currently living on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

How did you first start playing music?

My whole life has been surrounded by music. My nanna used to sing all the time and I grasped onto it from her at a young age. When I was around 7 I would record myself singing and pretend I had a huge crowd in front of me, It’s always been something i’ve wanted to do.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

At the start of covid I was lacking a lot of creativity and motivation to sing and write. I ended up getting really bored during quarantine so I found the sudden urge to sit down and write a song. I got on many zoom calls with my songwriting teacher and we cracked down a few songs until we eventually wrote ‘Talk To Me’. After months of finalising my song I released my first ever single ‘Talk To Me’ and i’ve received great feedback so far which is very exciting! At this point in time i’m starting to sit down and write more songs in the hope that i can release another one late this year or early next year.

Your debut single ‘Talk To Me’ is out now, it must be very exciting as you’re the ripe old age of 16, what does this debut single mean to you?

Yes it is very exciting! I’ve been wanting to write and release my own songs since I was very young so this single is a huge accomplishment for me. I remember hearing the produced track for the first time and crying because I was so overwhelmed with happiness and joy. I really love singing and songwriting and all i’ve ever wanted is to share my music with those who share the same love for music as I do.

What influenced the sound and songwriting?

Before I wrote ‘Talk To Me’ I knew i wanted a song with a big ending filled with strings and all different instruments, which we managed to add into the song. I also took a lot of influence from Billie Eilish.

How did you Talk To Me come about?

Talk To Me was written about my experience with unconfined love and the obstacles that I went through with this person. I became upset about the entire situation which influenced me to write a song about what happened. This then created ‘Talk To Me’

Where and when did you record/produce/master?

I started the recording and producing stage in December 2020 with Josh Beattie in his studio. It was a great experience!

What was your experience like working producer Josh Beattie?

Josh is super cool! I told him what I was looking for in the song, he pitched some ideas and made the song I really wanted into reality. He is very talented and makes the whole process of recording the song fun. I will definitely be working with him again.

How did you approach the recording process?

I was very nervous for it all because I had never been in a recording studio before, and I was worried it wouldn’t turn out how i’d like but I got comfortable quickly, it was really fun and I can’t express how much I love the way the song came out.

Who are you listening to at the moment and who have been your major musical influences to date?

At the moment I’m listening to Beach House, Danial Caesar and Gorrilaz. I would say Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Frank Ocean are my biggest musical influences at the moment. I look up to them a lot and I take a lot of inspiration from them.

What do you like to do away from music?

When I’m away from music I enjoy learning to drive and enhancing my digital art skills.

What’s planned for 2021?

Lots of exciting things are happening in 2021! I just got my busking license so i’ll be busking around the coast, I’ll be writing more songs and performing at gigs!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My favourite food at the moment is sushi and I love exploring Brisbane city with my friends!

Where are you currently based?

Hey! I’m originally from a city called Pune in India, but am currently based in Los Angeles.

How did you first start playing music?

The first time I really got into Western music in general was when I was 14 (Having grown up in India, I wasn’t exposed to western music initially). My dad played me Smoke on the water by Deep Purple and I was hooked right from the first time I heard the main riff. From there onwards, I got my parents to buy me a guitar and kept exploring the world of classic rock music, learning songs by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton and all the other legendary bands and musicians of that era. That’s what help set and build my strong foundation in music. I then started playing in bands locally, writing original music and started experimenting with electronic music production. I found that by applying all the musical concepts I had learnt through classic rock music to my new production skills and writing originals on them, I was really onto finding my sound. I decided to then move to Los Angeles in 2016 to test the waters in the global music scene. Ever since then I’ve been constantly writing, releasing and performing my music and have been growing constantly both as a musician and an artist. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for the future.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

Initially when Covid hit and the world went into a lockdown, I too panicked like the rest of the world and was uncertain as to how long it would last and how I would cope with everything. However, as time passed, I realized that since I was home all day, I could really focus on creating and finishing my existing songs. It also challenged me and got me to push myself into really getting creative. In order to still stay proactive as a music artist, I had to figure out ways to make quality content (both audio and video) right from my home. This is when I started experimenting with vlogging, making loop music videos from my home, using green screen and animation videos. I learnt a lot in the past year and developed a lot of new skills and 2020 turned out to be one of the more successful years for me as an artist in terms of growing my fan base, social media and streaming numbers. But I really hope the world goes back to normal especially with all the vaccines coming in as I have a lot of new music and videos dropping that I want to test out in live crowds.

Your new single ‘Olivia’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Olivia is about a girl (not named Olivia) I met a couple years ago and immediately fell for her. There was just some intense sense of familiarity I felt with her and was absolutely hooked onto her. It was too soon to communicate exactly how I felt about her as we had only just met a week prior so I decided to put all feelings down in a song and the result was the song ‘Olivia’. Me and her only lasted about a month and a half but the song has helped me with courting a lot of other women haha.

How did you go about writing Olivia?

The goal was pretty clear to me. I wanted to pour all my feelings for the girl out in the song but more importantly accurately convey why I felt so strongly about her. I wanted to bring forth the instant sense of familiarity I felt with her. She never felt like a stranger even though we had only recently met which is what made me keep exploring with chords until I came up with the warm and pretty progression that I wrote the song over. Then came the time to write the lyrics down. I wanted to put forth my feelings softly, subtly yet effectively and had to make sure I wasn’t coming on to strong with my words and phrasing choices as I had to create a warm and light vibe rather than a powerful one which took me a while of going back and forth on the lyrics till I had the finals words penned down. I also made sure I sang the song in a soft falsetto once again to make sure the aura I was trying to set and the feelings I was trying to convey were brought out accurately.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

I write, perform, produce, record, mix and master my songs all by myself. The whole goal I have with my music is for the listeners to hear my songs exactly how I intend them to. I feel in today’s world, renting a professional studio, hiring producers, engineers isn’t necessary. It could be beneficial but isn’t necessary. I make all my songs in my home studio setup and see them all the way through; from the initial idea and inspiration to the final product. I feel the lesser people involved in the process of creating a song the more the song stays true to its creator’s original vision.

How did you approach the recording/production process?

Once I had the song written down and the chords finalized and laid down. I brought the project onto my loop station setup in my home studio and just started experimenting with adding and subtracting elements to and from the song. I started building layers, adding synths, drums and percussion and the song process was pretty straightforward. The coolest part was creating the little catchy hook that really drives the song. I was exploring a lot of vocal formant change effects and came up with a really nice melody to use with the effects and create sort of a mellow, positive drop section and I’m really proud of it haha.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Honestly, thanks to Spotify, I have been discovering a lot of indie underground artists that I’ve really enjoyed listening to. Most recently, I got exposed to Josh Fudge, Julyan amongst several others. I’ve been straying away from all the popular music and have been really into exploring new artists and finding inspiration in their music and talent. I feel these underground independent artists have more soul and originality in their music that most of the major artists have been lacking.

What do you like to do away from music?

When not making music, I love to read books, I like to drink beer and play pool with my friends, I have really gotten into cooking recently, but most of all I love playing with my dog.

What’s planned for 2021?

I’ve got a bunch of new songs and music videos coming out this year that I’m super stoked for. The next one to watch out for would be my song ‘Lead Me On’ that’s dropping on the 7th of May. I’m really excited to see what feedback I get on that. Other than releasing music, I plan to play a bunch of live shows and pop up events locally with my band once all the venues start opening up and the live music scene hopefully gets back to how it was before the pandemic hit.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My favourite food place in Los Angeles has to be Dave’s Hot Chicken. There are so many good food places and restaurants to explore in LA but I freakin love Dave’s and could eat it every day if I wanted haha. Other than that, I love hanging out with my friends at this low-key pub called ‘The Brickyard’. We go there every weekend to kick it with a few beers and play pool.

Jus Kno’

by the partae April 5, 2021
written by the partae

What are your names and roles within jus Kno’?

We are Alex Aller and Pablo Villanueva. Alex takes care of the music and Pablo is in charge of all the visual content.

Where are you currently based?

We are living in Madrid right now.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

In our case, the most important thing is that we have finally  released our new album “Looped Circles”. This project was developed during the quarantine and it is something that you can tell all along the record because it is our deepest, personal and introspective music till date.

How did Jus Kno’ come to be?

We were born and raised in a little town in Asturias, in northern Spain. We were involved in an art collective with other friends, and it was when we finished our studies that Pablo decided to move to Madrid. The aim was to look for more opportunities to work as a video director and just a year later Alex also moved to the capital. At that time we had a lot of ideas and decided to join forces in a common project to create a product where music and visuals have the same relevance.
Your album ‘Looped Circles’ will be out March 26, 2021 – what influenced the sound and songwriting?

We have been working on the album since Christmas of 2019. During the quarantine of 2020, Madrid was heavily restricted and we spent many months isolated at home. We are flatmates so we passed through the same experience together. By the end of 2020 we realized that all the music that we were making during that time had a connection, the songs were talking to each other somehow. That is why we decided to put them all together in our first album.

How did you go about writing Looped Circles?

The music was our way to escape from this painful situation we are all suffering. In a way, we would prefer that the inspirations of our first album would have come from travel, gathering with other artists or more joyful experiences. However, we think that this album is going to become very special for being our saviour in this historic time, which is a beautiful thing.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

We have our own studio at home, where we write, produce and mix all our songs. When it comes to master, all of our records are taken care of by Carlos Koschitzky.

How did you approach the recording process?

We work with Ableton and we try to stay analog as much as we can by using vintage mixers and also tape processing.

What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of Looped Circles?

The challenge is always to decide when a song is ready. This is our first album, so there were a lot of discards and changes, also the mixing process became very frustrating since we were stuck at home and refreshing the ears was a bit difficult. The most rewarding moment was when we finally put it out and received all the messages from people loving it.

What programs/equipment/instruments did you use?

So for recording we work mainly in Ableton, processing the mix by the Teac 2A and the Teac A3440, especially when we want more texture in some parts. Regarding the instruments, we have an upright piano, a Rhodes piano, guitars and some synthesizers as the Prophet 8 or Juno 106. We only use samples when it comes to drums, for the rest we prefer to write music by using these instruments so we can reproduce almost everything on a live show.

Has Looped Circles turned out as it was initially envisaged?

We had already planned and signed to release an album with Faneca Music, but we did not know that this was going to be the scenario. We are happy with the result, although the best thing of an album is sometimes to tour with it and this is something that seems to be kind of impossible right now.

What is planned for Looped Circles?

We are planning to keep delivering visual content, with visualizers or more music videos. Also, we would love to do a presentation of the album and put on a good show. We are currently working on it.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

The new albums from Grandbrothers, Floating Points and Maria Arnal.

What do you like to do away from music?

Climbing, movies and traveling.

What’s planned for 2021?

Hopefully, the return of live events!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

We love the food from Asturias, one of the reasons this region is famous for. Our favorite place here in Madrid could be “Matadero Madrid”. It is an abandoned slaughterhouse used now for cultural events.

Eli Brown – Escape EP [Factory 93]

Release date: 2nd April

An unstoppable force, Eli Brown unveils a massive three-track EP of mouth-watering house & techno cuts. Launching the new underground sister-label from Insomniac, Eli steps up for the first release on Factory 93, presenting a diverse mix of sounds across the hard-hitting end of the dance world.

Title track ‘Escape’ kicks off the EP with Eli Brown intelligently striking a balance between an unrelenting techno groove and early 90’s trance elements. The introduction of heady synth stabs tees up an almighty drop like no other. This is a DJ weapon set to decimate dancefloors the world over with speaker-ripping synths and jaw dropping basslines oozing techno class of the highest order!  Morning Light’ embodies what Eli Brown has become so widely endeared for.

A deeply moving track that exhibits his talents for luring melody lines that wander across rumbling techno rhythms. The crisp synths and brooding low-end bass contrast with the soulful vocal slices surgically cut and dropped in at the perfect moments.  Tying off the release in style, ‘My House’ brings some classic house vibes to this EP. The bass marries together perfectly with the irresistibly tight 909 drum grooves before a party-ready vocal is introduced, dominating the senses for the duration.

This is a true techno/house fusion, executed with finesse from Eli Brown.

Flyght Club ‘Olivia’

by the partae April 2, 2021
written by the partae

The feeling of meeting a stranger and immediately seeing your possible significant other in them is so common yet so rare. I met a girl last year and fell head-over-heels for her in a very short period of time. There was just an instant sense of familiarity I felt with her, but it was too soon to tell anyone about it so I decided to make a song about it. The chill Indie-Pop vibe lays the foundation for a mellow yet uplifting song that displays the intense immediate infatuation one feels when meeting a stranger and instantly establishing a connection. The electronic elements beautifully convey the heat of the moment, while the melody justifies the impracticality of the situation and pairs perfectly with a beat that represents the strong, flowing anxiousness that accompanies such a moment.

Flyght Club - Olivia

bio –

Flyght Club is Shauvik Sharan’s contemporary music project. Prioritizing extreme versatility, flyght club’s music ranges over all of the popular music types and explores a whole new genre and it’s intrinsic elements with every song being made to cater to different listener moods and emotions. Every song is written, produced, performed and mixed by Shauvik solely to make sure the song is conveyed to the listener exactly the way he intends it to. The songs are then brought to life with a full band during live performances.

Shauvik Sharan, who grew up in Pune, India, decided to move to Los Angeles 5 years ago to pursue a career in music and to achieve his dream of making it big in the global music industry. Growing up on classic rock artists such as Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and Pink Floyd built Shauvik’s strong foundation in music and got him to pick up and master the guitar. Shauvik then began playing as a guitarist in bands locally and won a bunch of rock band competitions. Shauvik then decided to get into electronic music and start DJing as the scene started growing in his city. After a couple years of playing in rock bands and winning DJ competitions, Shauvik decided to move to Los Angeles to test his skills in the hub of the music industry. It was there that he mastered the art of production and engineering as well as singing and songwriting, something he hadn’t thought of experimenting before. This is what gave birth to his project ‘Flyght Club’. Even though at first the name appears as a band name, it actually is just Shauvik alone. The name is based on a concept where anybody who is trying to rise, achieve their goals and is giving everything they’ve got in order to get that is part of the flyght club. And anybody who supports the vision is also a part. Ranging and experimenting in multiple genres and forever increasing his music vocabulary, flyght club has become one of the most versatile music artists in history. Literally left completely unchained from the boundaries of musical genres.

Since then Flyght Club has garnered a good amount of attention on multiple platforms like youtube due to his music and is continuing to gain a following.

Sarandons ‘Lately I Believe’ Premiere

by the partae April 2, 2021
written by the partae

Hailing from the Junction, and citing influences like Wilco, Kurt Vile, and Cage the Elephant  – the band is a fully collaborative endeavour of Toronto music stalwarts Damian Coleman (vocals, bass), Edmund Cummings (vocals, keys), Craig Keeney (lead guitar), Phil Skot (drums) and Dave Suchon (vocals, guitar). Dripping guitar tones, billowing keyboard melodies, and defiant bass / drums all contribute to the textured sound of The Sarandons. Songs are bittersweet, rich with nostalgia and tell stories that are familiar but just out of reach.

SLUM SOCIABLE RELEASE FINAL EP THE STREET OF DIRE NEEDS

by the partae April 1, 2021
written by the partae

Today marks the bittersweet end of Melbourne duo Slum Sociable. Their final release The Street Of Dire Needs EP is out now via Liberation Records.

The five-tracker features singles ‘Explain Myself’, ‘You’re In My Head (feat. KYE)’ and ‘Questions’ as well as title track ‘The Street Of Dire Needs’ and ‘Lookin’ Up’. These final two are greatly significant songs for Ed Quinn and Miller Upchurch, who penned ‘Lookin’ Up’ 10 years ago in their previous musical manifestation.

“It feels right that these songs are the last we’re going to release. Lookin’ Up was the first song we wrote together (during the good ol’ Cold Hiker days), and The Street of Dire Needs was the last song we wrote. We couldn’t be happier with how this EP turned out, and The Street Of Dire Needs is probably my favourite song Slum has ever done.”
– Ed Quinn

The much-loved duo shared the news of their breakup to socials in March with the message, “we’re excited to move onto the next phases of our careers/ life, and thank you all for your love.”

From their break-out debut EP TQ in 2015, to their acclaimed self-titled debut full-length, to their popular L.I.F. EP, Miller Upchurch and Ed Quinn have proven to be a quintessential pairing. The duo has given us radio gems like ‘All Night’ and ‘Afterthought’ along with fan faves such as ‘Do Something About It’ and ‘Castle’. From the beaches of Melbourne’s south, they have mixed it with the very best, playing the Splendour In The Grass and Falls Festivals locally, plus SXSW and The Great Escape abroad. Throughout the course of their journey, they have accumulated streams of over 25 million across DSPs. They’ve clocked spins on BBC Radio 1, Beats 1 and KCRW, in addition to triple j and community radio locally, and have won praise from the likes of Billboard, NYLON, CLASH, Earmilk, Indie Shuffle, Pilerats and Purple Sneakers. And of course, who could forget their joyous, raucous Christmas show from 2018?

With the release of this final EP, we bid Slum Sociable adieu with full but heavy hearts.

JAYWOOD announces debut EP Some Days + shares title track and video

Today, Winnipeg songwriter JayWood (aka Jeremy Haywood-Smith), announces his debut EP, Some Days, out April 23 and signing to Captured Tracks / Remote Control Records. Along with the announcement, Jaywood shares the first single/video ‘Some Days’ via KEXP.  Read KEXP’s interview + ‘Some Days’ premiere here.

JayWood on Some Days: “It’s been really nice reconnecting with a younger version of myself through this EP, I hope he’s stoked.”

JayWood is the pseudonymous indie-alternative project of Jeremy Haywood-Smith from Winnipeg, Manitoba. What started as a bedroom recording project of sad jangle-pop songs, evolved into the psych-funk approach present on JayWood’s latest effort, Some Days – his debut release on Captured Tracks.

Written and originally recorded in 2015, the EP Some Days was born of a time of compounding transitions in Haywood-Smith’s life. The end of a long-term relationship, a shift in social circles, and an impending move found Haywood-Smith grappling with self-identity. It also presented the rare moment of a fresh start. Taking cues from his favorite DIY artists, he channeled his anxieties into songwriting, trying his hand at self-recording using just a guitar, a midi-controller, and a borrowed MacBook. “I had to write the EP and learn how to record at the same time, which you can definitely hear in the original recordings. The songs were kinda messy, but I just went with the first ideas that came to mind. I made a rule for myself not to go back on anything, because I didn’t have the time to tweak around.”

Ultimately deciding to re-record the tracks years later, Haywood-Smith had the opportunity to reminisce on the past, while staying firmly rooted in the present. It was a process of life imitating art, as ‘Some Days’ is “about feeling that push/pull of moving forward versus staying comfortable” and ‘What You Do To Me’ confronts the familiar, seemingly endless cycle of depression. JayWood’s catchy pop hooks combine with jazz chords and a psychedelic approach on ‘Creeps’, his “angsty break-up song”, and a striking juxtaposition to ‘Dreams’ which finds Haywood-Smith ruminating on the idea of a picture perfect relationship set to swelling, ethereal strings. With a flair for channeling the past into immediate, feel-good music, JayWood is certainly one to watch.

HALF WAIF RELEASES LYRIC VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE "TAKE AWAY THE ACHE"

HALF WAIF RELEASES LYRIC VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE “TAKE AWAY THE ACHE”

by the partae April 1, 2021
written by the partae

Half Waif, the musical project of Nandi Rose, has shared a lyric video for her latest digital single “Take Away The Ache.” The song continues a new chapter in Half Waif’s ever-evolving story and sound.

WATCH THE “TAKE AWAY THE ACHE” LYRIC VIDEO

“This is a song about the paradoxes of loving. How we ask the impossible of each other, how we promise what we can’t give. But I don’t mean this cynically – I actually find it quite remarkable” says Nandi Rose. “It’s kind of an incredible feat of imagination and will, the way we help each other transform our darkest moments into something bearable, like a game of make-believe. ‘It’s not an ache,’ you might say, ‘it’s an ember.’ And so together we stay warm by the fire of what we’ve created, lit by a sweet lie that makes it all okay for a while. To love is to believe in a kind of magic.”

“Take Away The Ache” follows the release of her “Orange Blossoms” b/w “Party’s Over” 7″, out now via ANTI-.

“Half Waif’s new album, The Caretaker, evokes the stifling feeling of wanting to force time forward and charge into a future that’s nebulous and perpetually out of reach. These songs inadvertently speak to a period of uncertainty and isolation, and, though they’re weighty, Half Waif’s sombre elegance reflects the steely-eyed strength of a person who might just get through it.” -The New Yorker

“Beautifully rendered and deeply layered synth-pop.” -Pitchfork

“The swooping blend of organic instrumentation and fluttering electronics that has marked Nandi Rose’s solo career as Half Waif looks to come into stark clarity with The Caretaker. A musician who has built her career on enigmatic presence and ambiguity steps into a lusher and more mature territory with her fourth album, guided as always by her clear and restless vocals, delivering poetic turns of phrase that can twist from grandly universal to painfully intimate within a single measure” -The AV Club

“A whirring, deeply emotive window into self-sufficiency and the highs and lows of personal growth.” -NPR “Stormy chord progressions and eerie pitch-shifts convey disquiet, while sweeping strings and Rose’s soaring vocals crash in waves of catharsis.” – Nylon

“Sparse and spectral.” -The FADER

“Characteristically gorgeous, emotive.” -Stereogum

“Often resembles a reversion to her sparser early work and away from the cavernous jolts of her more recent output.” -Paste

“Whereas her debut solo record, Lavender, took a more intimate approach to music, this new one goes for big emotions and even bigger music.” – Consequence of Sound

“Nandi Rose dials into the electronic elements of her musical repertoire.” – UPROXX

“Downright euphoric.” – MTV

PRAISE JUAN WAUTERS

“La Onda de Juan Pablo is a rich travelogue packed into 10 effervescent tracks…. a sonically rich, emotionally textured work, driven by the relationships that organically emerged as Wauters found collaborators in every new country he visited.” – Nylon

“The album is picaresque in its depictions of everyday heroes and their daily quests against the decidedly frenzied backdrop of the Uruguayan singer’s American transplant sensibilities.” – NPR

“[Waters] has proved himself to be something of an unrelenting force of joy. His songs are simple little sing-alongs that bask in a youthful naivety.” – Pitchfork

“[Wauters] music… conjures up the folk titans who haunted the streets and coffeeshops of Greenwich Village back in the ’60s.” – AV Club

Today, Juan Wauters shares ‘Estás Escuchando’, featuring five-time Latin GRAMMY nominated artist El David Aguilar. ‘Estás Escuchando‘ is the fourth single from Juan’s forthcoming album Real Life Situations, out April 30, which also features collaborations with Mac DeMarco, Peter Sagar (AKA Homeshake), Nick Hakim, Cola Boyy, and more. Directed by Juan Molinet, the ‘Estás Escuchando’ video is a colourful expression of playful animations. Watch here. ‘Estás Escuchando’ follows the “groove-heavy, feel-good” (Remezcla) ‘Presentation (with Nick Hakim and Benamin)‘, ‘Real (with Mac Demarco)‘ which FADER called an “authentic alignment,” and “uplifting” (Line of Best Fit) ‘Unity” (with Cola Boyy)’.

Juan Molinet on the ‘Estás Escuchando’ video: “Enjoy this piece inspired by the classic sing-a-long videos for kids, which fits perfectly well with this catchy and chirpy song by Juan and David, full of good vibes and impossible to take out of your head! The color and style also helps paint a picture of a breezy walk around the park, the perfect setting for whistling this tune away! Much love!”

Juan Wauters on ‘Estás Escuchando’: “I had heard of David when I was in Mexico recording ‘La Onda de Juan Pablo’. People there regarded him as one of the most talented songwriters of his generation. One day, months later, I was in Mexico recording a music video and I was invited to a house where there was a musicians’ gathering. When I showed up there were many well known singers there and they were all passing the guitar around and singing songs. One of the people there was David Aguilar. That day we made plans to meet and we did.

When it came time to do my albums in which I wanted to include other singers, of course I thought of inviting David to participate. I went down like this: I was in Mexico filming a music video for my song Mi Guitarra and we scheduled some studio time to do a song together. The initial idea I had was to utilize his great whistling ability and have the hook of the song be a whistling part. (I got this idea from the N.E.R.D. song Wonderful Place / Waiting for You). I wrote a whistling hook and I sent him an audio message with the idea I had in mind. He immediately sent an audio back of him playing the guitar (with that particular rhythm that the song has), the whistling hook and him singing two verses he wrote then (the ones that ended up on the song). I heard it, it was late at night and I sent him an audio back with the chorus (“si escuchas esto de noche, saca de tu pelo el broche y deja tu pelo al aire..”). It was made like that. Though we were both in the same city, the song happened to be written over the phone in a very quick and spontaneous way. It’s the only one of the collaborations on RLS that was written from afar.

The following day we met at his studio, Estudio Continuo, with Ulises Hadjis (Venezuelan musician, producer and co-owner of Estudio Continuo with David) and recorded the track. It was great to have Ulises in there. He played drums and oversaw the whole production. I saw then, at the studio, how talented of a musician David is. He played guitar, bass and sang the song very naturally.

This all happened the week before COVID LYFE hit so the song production was finished by me in NY during the summer of 2020. I had Chris West from Nashville send a flute solo. He sent 8 to have different variations. When I put them on the track, by accident, they all played at once I loved how they sounded all together so I left the flute solo be “a vibe” or “a ‘tonal’ moment”. It feels as though the song goes into a world during that solo and then quickly comes back to its easy-going-fun vibe.

You can enjoy the single edit or the long version of the song. Salúd David!!! Gracias por el momento y esta canción!!!!“
The interplay between genre-hopping eclecticism and earnest, plain-spoken observation makes Real Life Situations come alive. It’s something Wauters is known for, and for all its collaboration, this album could only have been made by him. Mining older songs, phone notes, new material, and snippets from TV and YouTube, he’s crafted an aural document of the year through his eyes. Jubilant choruses and spoken word poetry bleed into city noises and overheard conversations. Real freedom, the album suggests, comes not from gaining control, but from accepting its artifice.
Until recently, Wauters had viewed his solo project as just that – a singular expression of his artistic vision. A trip through Latin America while recording his last album, however, laid the groundwork for a different approach. Inviting local musicians to contribute to the songs he was working on producing a collection unlike any of his previous work, infused with the musical traditions of each country he’d visited. As a result, 2018’s La Onda De Juan Pablo and its follow-up, Introducing Juan Pablo, were Wauters’ most expansive and sonically diverse records to date, tracing both his Uruguayan roots and his travellers’ spirit. On Real Life Situations, he’s channeled this collaborative spirit, lending his chameleonic songwriting to experiments in hip-hop, lo-fi R&B, and deft indie folk.

Real Life Situations will be released digitally on April 30 and physically on May 14. Pre-order/save here

Australian alt favourites Slowly Slowly have announced a huge list of added dates and venue upgrades to their 2021 national headline tour, and revealed label-mates Yours Truly as special guests. It comes after the band played a huge set at Live At The Bowl alongside Ocean Alley, Maddy Jane & The Grogans last week, and ahead along the east coast with Full Tilt Festival shortly.

Now fresh from the release of their February album Race Car Blues – Chapter 2, this full band headliner will see Slowly Slowly finally able to celebrate the release of both this and their 2020 album Race Car Blues.

On heading out on the road, Slowly Slowly bassist Alex Quayle shares:

“With RCB being out in the world for over a year now, we’re so eager to finally be able to give this album the tour and live show it deserves.”

Slowly Slowly vocalist Ben Stewart shares how Race Car Blues – Chapter 2 particularly captures the heart of the band:

“[It’s] always been the ultimate aim for the band to celebrate the music we love – anthemic heart on sleeve songwriting – but across a broad spectrum of genres. Having no creative ceiling for this project only pushed that ethos further….Chapter 2 pushes the envelope a little further in every direction – heavier, more pop sensibility and a deeper dive into intimate solo songs.”

Upon release, both Race Car Blues and Chapter 2 enjoyed coveted feature positions on triple j, bagged knockout global reviews and together have garnered over 11 Million streams to date.

With both parts of the Race Car Blues saga now out in the world, UNFD is pleased to feature both albums on a whopping 24-track double LP collection titled “Race Car Blues Extended Edition”. Available as an extremely limited collectors’ item, fans can snag remaining copies via 24Hundred now.

Slowly Slowly play their Race Car Blues Australian Tour in June/July. Full details and tickets below.

MUSTAFA Shares new single & video ‘Ali’ Announces debut album When Smoke Rises out May 28

Today, Muslim poet and songwriter Mustafa details his debut project When Smoke Rises, due May 28th via his own Regent Park Songs / Remote Control Records. After revealing its title and speaking about the body of work in his recent GQ Middle East cover story, Mustafa is sharing one more offering from the new record, the powerful ‘Ali’, which arrives alongside a self-directed visual.

Mustafa’s two singles to date – ‘Stay Alive’ and ‘Air Forces’ – have been met with adoration from fellow artists, critics and fans and serve as a near-perfect introduction to an important new voice in music. Both songs will be included on When Smoke Rises alongside the aforementioned ‘Ali’. They exemplify a style Mustafa himself describes as “inner city folk music” that finds musical inspiration in the folk greats such as Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Richie Havens but channelled through the contemporary lens of Mustafa’s modern day Toronto.

Mustafa was moved to release his own music following the loss of close friends to gun violence. Much of his music is addressed to those departed friends and to his Toronto neighborhood, Regent Park; a vehicle to honor and affirm the concerns of his community while providing sonic solace for those looking to make sense of their own loss. The video for ‘Stay Alive’ prominently features footage of Regent Park, one of the first housing projects in North America and one of the biggest redevelopment projects on the continent. Mustafa‘s experience of seeing the blocks, community, and culture that raised him transform into something unrecognisable is a story that is playing out in neighbourhoods across the world – the inner city from which his folk songs are born.

Twenty-four year old singer/songwriter Mustafa Ahmed grew up fighting. He would do so firstly as a child growing up in Toronto’s Regent Park community, matching up with other children his age at the behest of the older kids from around the way. Somehow, it did not harden him. He would continue fighting, though now against stereotypes, as an adolescent poet dispelling notions of who Black Muslims from Regent Park were with every stanza of his continuously celebrated poetry. He would attempt to fight again, this time on behalf of his immediate community, as a member of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Youth Advisory Council, an effort that helped him realise his mission would be better served by amplifying the stories he’d collected over the years through song. And that is how we got Mustafa, child of Sudanese Muslim immigrants, one time Pan American Games Poet Laureate, cherished collaborator of acts like Majid Jordan, The Weeknd, and Khalid, and the artist whose debut project When Smoke Rises aims to exalt the Regent Park MC whose legacy Mustafa fights for now, Jahvante “Smoke Dawg” Smart.

“It just kind of shattered my entire world,” Mustafa says of Smoke Dawg’s murder. “I didn’t even realize how much weight we shared until I had to take that weight on for myself.” More painfully then, When Smoke Rises isn’t even only about Smoke Dawg. The project references a number of presences taken from Mustafa, names like Ano, Santana, and Ali, the friend whose doom Mustafa might have actually felt when he’d ask Ali to relocate for fear of such an unsavory end. That story, titled for its subject, appears as track six on When Smoke Rises. “All of the deaths that I experienced, I experienced through the time constraints of mourning,” Mustafa says. “Specifically, for young black people in inner city communities that die while at war with the state or at war with themselves, I wanted to beautify those departures. Because none of those departures were made beautiful for me.” On When Smoke Rises, Mustafa has sewn these departures – and his attempts to cope with them – into song, immortalising friends in the most honest way he knows how. Through his interpretation of folk music.

“The first folk singer I was introduced to was Joni Mitchell,” Mustafa says. “But Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan – they were anodising the White experience. But in hearing them, there was a kind of melancholy or sadness – something I didn’t hear in the songs that were representing the nuances of my life.” Ultimately, it was a video of Black American folk singer Richie Havens performing Woodstock that would empower him to perfect his medium. “When you see someone that looks like you, that feels like you, embodying the emotion that you are familiar with, it gives you the courage to walk in that path,” Mustafa says. He would reference the performance at every recording session thereafter. Racking up songwriting credits for pop stars while he developed his personal style, Mustafa would become one of the industry’s most sought after pens, understanding that the kind of music he helped to make great for others couldn’t possibly support the stories he needed to tell. For his diligence, both as student and creator, we get When Smoke Rises, a release that balances the impossible heft of honoring fallen comrades with the tenderness of a mother singing to a newborn. And it’s buttressed by Islam.

“It’s so important to be able to look at God,” Mustafa says. “As something someone can hold for themselves. Of course I want to be able to raise people’s tolerance level for Muslims, but even bigger than that, I want Muslims, themselves, to know that no one can take God away from them.” You’re likely to believe you hear God working through Mustafa on songs like ‘Stay Alive’, where he declares unconditional support for the Regent Park archetypes he knows so well and on ‘Air Forces’, where he can be heard pleading with these same affiliates to do their best to stay out of harm’s way. Then there is ‘What About Heaven’ where he wonders if the friends he’s lost have done enough to be forgiven for their sins and ‘The Hearse’ where a startling authenticity trumps even the singer’s purest intentions, Mustafa acknowledging revenge impulses in the presence of a friend’s dead body. “With my dogs/Right or wrong,” he sings.

The project features production from heavy-hitters Frank Dukes and Jamie xx, along with multiple contributions from similarly forlorn geniuses Sampha and James Blake. In them, Mustafa has found both established creators and kindred spirits, the kind of people who can’t help but feel the young singer’s vision. Also present on When Smoke Rises are the voices of longtime friends and Regent Park natives Rax, Puffy L’z, cityboymoe, and both the dearly departed Ali and Smoke Dawg. They are the ones, of course, without whom When Smoke Rises would not exist. More importantly though, they are at least some of the people it is for. “My entire plight, since I was young, has been in and around protecting and preserving the stories of my community,” Mustafa says. “It’s the reason that I began writing poetry. I’m like how am I going to preserve the stories that are not currently being told with any authenticity?” When Smoke Rises is our answer.

Praise for Dry Cleaning

“The most exciting guitar bands of recent times.”  – The Wire

“Cerebral, caustic, exhilarating debut.” – MOJO ★★★★

“Fresh, clever and endlessly intriguing, it adds up to a stellar debut.” – Record Collector ★★★★

“Pleasingly grubby, and, in the best possible way, a tough act to follow.” – Uncut 8/10

“One of the most fascinating bands out there.” – DORK, Album of the Month ★★★★

“Peerless peddlers of post-punk spoken-word ennui deliver another mini-masterpiece.” – The Sunday Times on ‘Strong Feelings’

“Florence Shaw evokes Jarvis Cocker at his most sardonic.” – The Guardian on ‘Strong Feelings’

“[Dry Cleaning] grafts post-punk grooves onto semi-absurdist poetry in a way that’s a little reminiscent of the great Scottish band Life Without Buildings, but Shaw’s vocals are uniquely, and a little menacingly, deadpan.”  – The New York Times

“[‘Strong Feelings’ is] a bundle of contradictions, wringing pathos out of detachment, narrative out of non sequiturs.” – Pitchfork

“[‘Scratchard Lanyard’] has all the strange allure of their 2019 output, plus a little extra verve and polish courtesy of PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish.” – Rolling Stone

“”Dry Cleaning infuse post-punk with psychedelia on their new single ‘Strong Feelings.’ The track is tied together by lead vocalist Florence Cleopatra Shaw — her lyrics are a quiet tempest of passing thoughts that are pointless and profound, often at the same time.” – the FADER

“’Scratchcard Lanyard’ is a jumble of wordplay and wired tension. Bandleader Florence Shaw sounds disaffected and scattered, singing of bouncy balls and knitting circles and women in aviators firing bazookas, as she lands on one central refrain: ‘Do everything and feel nothing.’” – Stereogum

With their debut album New Long Leg out this Friday, Dry Cleaning have shared a third new single, ‘Unsmart Lady’, and its official video today. Premiered yesterday by Double J’s Zan Rowe, ‘Unsmart Lady’ is driven by a pleasing bone-rattling grunge groove and lyrics about body image. The band’s lyricist Florence Shaw says, “’Fat podgy, no make-up’ – I was thinking about these things that are supposed to be a source of shame about your appearance and wanting to use them in a powerful way. Just trying to survive when you feel knackered and put-upon and shit about yourself, but you say, ‘I don’t care what I’m supposed to be.’” The song’s Tilly Shiner-directed Hi8 analogue promo finds the band playing live in the humdrum surroundings of a south London carpet shop.

Dry Cleaning is Nick Buxton (drums), Tom Dowse (guitar), Lewis Maynard (bass) and Florence Shaw (vocals). Buoyed by the universal acclaim they received for 2019 EPs Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks and Sweet Princess, the south London foursome spent more and more of their lives on tour, refining their craft even further and developing a near-psychic knowledge of how to leave the right amount of space for each other in their songs. Their debut album New Long Leg, produced by John Parish, and featuring the singles ‘Scratchcard Lanyard’, ‘Strong Feelings’ and ‘Unsmart Lady’ is more ambitious and complex, with Shaw’s spoken vocals tightly intertwined with the band’s restless instrumentals. Shaw extracts the most immense meaning from the most trivial things; she peppers the songs with a thousand tiny details, little witty asides about supermarkets, cupboards, beauty products and body parts add up to sonic landscapes that teem with the strange magic of ordinary life.

New Long Leg will be released on 2 April digitally and on CD, cassette, standard black vinyl and limited-edition yellow vinyl.

Earlier this month Dry Cleaning made their television debut on Later…with Jools Holland, performing the single ‘Scratchcard Lanyard’ at London’s MOTH Club. Watch the performance in full HERE.
