Mike Barret and Phil Swan announce new project Awkward Branches with debut single ‘A Frame (Not a Window)’ out today via Tip Top Recordings

by the partae November 3, 2022
written by the partae

Awkward Branches is the new project of singer, keyboardist and former Fiction frontman Mike Barrett and close collaborator and guitarist Phil Swan. Today they share their debut single ‘A Frame (Not a Window)’ via Tip Top Recordings.

After writing and performing with each-other in numerous other projects – including a 6-piece experimental collective (Holy Island Sketchbook), gothic trio (Sweet Heave) and as part of Mike’s dream-pop project (Brand New Moon) – they felt it was finally time to put a name to their own project, and thus Awkward Branches was born.

Appropriately, the pair first met standing under a much-beloved tree in the gardens of an old wedding chapel where they both worked. While waiting for ceremonies to run their course, talk would often turn to music. United by a shared appreciation for ambient soundscapes and buoyant melodies, they tentatively began recording sketches; ideas which grew over several years, without hurry, into a handful of fully formed songs.

‘A Frame (Not a Window)’ is the first single to be shared from forthcoming debut EP due out next spring. The debut single is a tranquil sun-flecked number, driven by bouncy acoustic guitar and verdant synth, with tender vocals that speak to the nature of trust, faith and dogs. The song is complemented by a charming animated video, created by Mike Barrett, that satisfyingly mirrors the colourful textures and sanguine spirit of the song itself. Barrett on the video: “The video began life as a simple zoom through abstract spaces, inspired by a craft-paper collage Phil had made as a potential EP cover. Using a blend of hand-drawn elements, original footage and AI-assisted animation techniques, it soon evolved into a somewhat labyrinthine journey across a variety of fantasy landscapes, culminating In the slightly tongue-in-cheek / slightly deadly serious ascension to heaven for the final scene. Mostly it was a chance to indulge my affection for kitsch architectural forms, potted plants, and – in a nod to the first line of the song’s lyrics – the illusive joy of dogs”.

VOB Celebrate Women Who Are Breaking Stereotypes

by the partae November 3, 2022
written by the partae
Stream ‘PMS’

After a phenomenal debut at Wacken Open Air 2022 in July and stirring up a buzz with their “School  Revolution Remix” EP that featured six electronic music DJs and producers in September, Voice Of  Baceprot (VOB) are back with their brand-new single “PMS”.

Short for “Perempuan Merdeka Seutuhnya” or “Wholly Independent Woman” in Bahasa Indonesia,  “PMS” was actually written by Marsya (vocals, guitar), Widi (bass), and Sitti (drums) during their high school days in around 2017 together with their counselling teacher and mentor Abah Erza.

“We wrote the song fuelled by the remaining energy that we had left after school. At the time, we were up to our necks with school activities, so we basically had to drag ourselves to the studio for workshops,” remembers Marsya.

In spite of the conditions that they were in, there were no traces of fatigue in the song that they produced. In fact, “PMS” reveals the band’s antipathy, displeasure, and anger that they held towards their situation at the time, both lyrically and musically.

The main inspiration behind the lyrics to “PMS” came from a series of short stories written by  Indonesian author Feby Indirani titled “Bukan Perawan Maria” (Eng; “Not Virgin Mary”), focusing on VOB’s protestations against discriminative and judgmental behaviours that tend to be aimed towards women who hold a different mindset, perspective, attitude, and even wishes or dreams compared to the norm.

Coming from a region where social norms are heavily influenced by not only religious but also patriarchal values, VOB have had their fair share of gender-based discrimination in the past. The absence of life choices post-high school for many girls besides marriage would be one of them. The same also goes for career choices, which was limited for VOB and their friends due to gender discrimination.

“Ironically, it’s not just the men who would display such behaviours, but also our fellow women too!”  Marsya remarks.

Despite being written several years ago, the lyrics to “PMS” remain contextual and relevant to the current situation, not only back in their hometown but also in many parts of Indonesia and even the world at large. The reality is women are still restrained by patriarchal stereotypes, especially when it comes to career and other life choices.

Hence, it comes as no surprise when they roar:

“Meski tak seperawan Maria
Aku bukan budak busuk otakmu
Meski tak seperawan Maria
Akulah merdeka merdekalah seutuhnya!”

(In English:  “Though not as virgin as Mary
I’m not your brain rotten slave
Even though she’s not as virgin as Mary
I am free, completely free!”)

There were not many changes made to the song in terms of its musical arrangement from its original form. Producer Yuka Dian Narendra (GRIBS, Anda Perdana, Bonita) lent his Midas touch to “PMS” by sprucing up its flow and sorting out the strongest parts of the song from the demo. He also selected the right sound for each instrument.

Vocal director Irvan “IrvNat” Natadiningrat (Tiga Diva, Krisdayanti, Indonesian Idol, X-Factor) also played a major part in the vocals department by asking Marsya, Widi, and Sitti to explore the kind of notes and melodies that they have never sung before: uplifting, bright, and fun, akin to anime theme songs.

“We definitely had our doubts in the beginning because it never occurred to us how a protest song could have vocal melodies of a sunnier disposition. However, once we tried it out and had a listen, we ended up loving the end results. It felt like there was another side to VOB that has never been unveiled before until now, with this approach. A fun side, yet still very much VOB,” explains Marsya.

Just like “[NOT] PUBLIC PROPERTY” – their previous single, “PMS” was mixed by Danish producer and sound engineer Tue Madsen, whose portfolio reads like a who’s who of heavy music with Meshuggah,  Suicide Silence, Mnemic, and Sick Of It All amongst his former clients. While the mastering itself was done by Howie Weinberg, an American audio mastering-engineer who is responsible for over 2,000  mastering credits, including 200+ certified Gold and Platinum albums by the RIAA, 20 Grammy  Awards and several other honours. Howie was also credited as the master engineer for Nirvana’s  “Nevermind” and Beastie Boys’ “Licensed To Ill.”

“PMS”, a bold shout out to all women who are breaking stereotypes by taking on male-dominated jobs, is available on all digital streaming platforms starting from November 3, 2022.

Sunk Loto Final Shows For 2022 Kick Off Later This Month, Limited Tickets Available For 2nd Melbourne Show

by the partae November 2, 2022
written by the partae

“You wouldn’t know they had just been on a 15 year hiatus…it seemed like they hadn’t missed a day. Their performance was stellar, and the crowd agreed. Crowd surfing, moshpits, horns in the air – the punters were having the time of their lives” – Wall Of Sound

“This was not just a nostalgic experience, this was better than ever. The Sunk Loto that strode confidently on to this stage, though the same humans, was a whole new beast” – Kill Your Stereo

“…the band sounding only better than they had 15 years ago, this is nostalgia heaven and everything feels right again…they’re tighter than ever, they sound bigger than ever” – Everblack Media

“Tonight’s set is twenty songs long, covering two LPs and their legendary debut EP…this is far more than a greatest hits affair. Deep cuts abound, and the crowd is loving it” – Sense Music Media

“With an explosion of energy and methodical precision that belie the fact that there had even been a 15 year hiatus as a band. Same band? Yes. Same Music?  Yes. Same performance? Not a chance! There was something fresh and exciting, like hearing it all again for the time but a more precise and mature version of those songs from long ago” – Metal-Roos
“A night fifteen years in the making for some…to say this was probably one of the most anticipated gigs for a Brisbane act in 2022 is a massive understatement” – The Live Wire
While 2022 has had its fair share of surprises, none have been more resoundingly celebrated than the announcement earlier this year that Australian metal pioneers Sunk Loto were officially returning to stages after a 15 year absence.

Selling out multiple Queensland shows within 24 hours of announcing their return, Sunk Loto swiftly went on to sell out additional 2022 shows, with a second Brisbane date and previously announced shows in Melbourne and Sydney rapidly reaching capacity. But if you missed out on snagging a chance to catch the prolific quartet back and bigger than ever live in action, a handful of tickets still remain for the second Melbourne show at Max Watt’s on Thursday 24 November. With unanimous praise from critics and fans alike so far for these explosive and in-depth shows, absence has indeed made the heart and the band’s ferocity grow fonder, and these final 2022 Sunk Loto shows are not to be missed.

If you had to list the most important heavy Australian albums of all time, it’s likely that Sunk Loto’s 2003 release Between Birth and Death would be near the top, and metal aficionados still consider the band as one of the most influential home-grown bands of the early 2000s.

Signed to Sony in 1999 when the average age of the band members was 16, Sunk Loto released an EP and two albums over their 10-year history. They toured the world with bands like Korn, Linkin Park, Suicidal Tendencies, Perfect Circle, Deftones, Sevendust and staked their claim as an epic live band at festivals such as Big Day Out, Homebake, Vans Warped Tour, Splendour in The Grass, and Falls.

Now, after 15 years apart, Sunk Loto have returned to the stage, with multiple sold out shows in Queensland earlier this year, and three shows remaining this November. The shows feature all four original members, Jason Brown, Dane Brown, Luke McDonald and Sean Van Gennip, who have come together to reconnect with their fans, entertain, have fun, and reignite their love of playing music.

After “five years of silence” (times 3) in a live setting, definitely don’t miss the final chance to catch Sunk Loto back at it in 2022 – snag your ticket today to one of the biggest shows of the year!

Lewis Capaldi Australian Tour: Second and final Sydney show added!

by the partae November 2, 2022
written by the partae
Secret Sounds presents
LEWIS CAPALDI
Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent Tour
Sydney sold out – second and final show added!
Tickets on sale from 9am AEDT Friday 4 November at secretsounds.com
Lewis Capaldi has officially sold out the Sydney date on his anticipated Australian tour in July 2023 – less than a week after tickets going on sale. In response to this overwhelming demand, Secret Sounds have added a second and final Sydney show to the tour which will see the relatable and down-to-earth crooner kick off his Australian shows at Qudos Bank Arena on Friday 7 July. Tickets to this new date will go on sale from 9am AEDT Friday 4 November.

This exciting news for Sydney-siders comes after Capaldi instantly sold out his Melbourne date last week, with a second show at Rod Laver Arena on Friday 14 July added in response.

Lewis Capaldi announced that he would be touring Australia two weeks ago, alongside sharing the news that his new album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent will be released on Friday 19 May 2023 on EMI Records. The July 2023 tour will mark his first performances down under since early 2020, when he quickly sold out his headline shows and won hearts across the country at Falls Festival. Prior to this, he toured Australia in 2018, delivering an unforgettable festival set at Splendour in the Grass. His 2023 tour will see him arrive with a host of new songs to perform from the new album, alongside crowd favourites.

Capaldi made his eagerly awaited return in September with new single ‘Forget Me’, giving fans a taste of new music to come. The new record will follow his 2019 full-length debut, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent — which peaked at No. 7 on the ARIA Albums Chart and featured the hit singles ‘Someone You Loved’ and ‘Before You Go’.

An auspicious start to the next phase of his career, ‘Forget Me’ made Capaldi just one of a handful of artists this year to have a single go straight in at No. 1 in its first week in the UK, and saw him equal Adele in accomplishing a hat-trick of UK No. 1 singles. ‘Forget Me’ was shortly followed by a true spectacle of a music video that saw Lewis re-enact Wham’s 1983 hit ‘Club Tropicana’ shot-for-shot.

Capaldi’s debut album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent sold over 10 million copies worldwide, propelling him from bedroom musician to superstar. The record spawned two ARIA top ten singles including ‘Someone You Loved’: a platinum-selling ballad that earned a GRAMMY nomination for Song of the Year, won the Song of the Year prize at the Brit Awards, and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and US Top 40 charts.

With all shows to the Scottish singer-songwriter’s tour selling fast, Sydney fans are encouraged to jump on tickets to the second date as soon as they’re available from 9am AEDT Friday 4 November. All other shows are on sale now at secretsounds.com.

ALABAMA SHAKES Announce Boys & Girls 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Album released digitally on 9th December, physical released on 13th January

by the partae November 2, 2022
written by the partae

Rough Trade Records will commemorate the 10th anniversary of Alabama Shakes’ internationally acclaimed debut album, Boys & Girls, with a two-disc deluxe edition. Hailed as one of the best albums of 2012 by Rolling Stone and numerous other publications, Boys & Girls entered Billboard’s Independent Albums chart at No. 1. It went on to attain Platinum certification and earn the band multiple GRAMMY nominations. Lead single ‘Hold On’ was voted the #1 Best Song of 2012 by Rolling Stone.

Repackaged in a foil-board gatefold jacket with new, unreleased photos, Boys & Girls 10 Year Anniversary Deluxe Edition contains the album’s original eleven songs plus an additional eleven tracks from the band’s explosive live performance on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, which aired in the months leading up to the album’s release. Listen to Alabama Shakes’ ferocious live version of ‘Always Alright’ – a non-album track that appeared on the soundtrack for the Oscar-nominated film Silver Linings Playbook and earned a GRAMMY nomination out now.  Pre-order Boys & Girls 10 Year Anniversary Deluxe Edition HERE.

Alabama Shakes – comprising singer/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, and drummer Steve Johnson – recorded Boys & Girls in Nashville, funding the sessions with their day jobs (Howard worked as a mail carrier, while Johnson served as a night watchman at a nuclear power plant) and nighttime gigs, playing James Brown and AC/DC covers in dive bars.

Soon after the arrival of Boys & Girls, Alabama Shakes found themselves thrust into the global spotlight, achieving such milestones as performing at the White House and on Saturday Night Live along with winning widespread critical praise. Pitchfork lauded “Howard’s gale-force delivery, an instrument that could have blown Otis Redding back.” The New York Times’ Jon Pareles said, “Alabama Shakes sound raw-boned and proudly unprocessed.” NME hailed the band as “a genuine, word-of-mouth, go-see-them-then-tell-10-friends-how-amazing-they-are thing.” The Guardian observed, “their music, a deep earthy pit of blues and soul and swamp, is the sort of stuff that honeys the soul and puts fire in the loins.”

As the album’s legacy continues to grow – NPR included ‘Hold On’ in the top five of its list of The 200 Greatest Songs By 21st Century Women+ in 2018 – Boys & Girls remains a major cultural touchstone whose songs of survival, longing and irrepressible hope never lose their transcendent power.

TIAHI releases Berlin-inspired single “SHOOTING STAR” and announces new EP

by the partae November 2, 2022
written by the partae

Berlin-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist TIAHI is back with a new record, taking us on a ride through the big city reality of the German culture capital. The first single “Shooting Star” is out since October 21 and marks the outset of a string of releases towards his sophomore EP, scheduled for May 2023.

On this new track, produced by TIAHI himself between Condor Recording Studios and Riverside Studios Berlin, his talent for songwriting is on full display, venturing into new, deeper territories, subtly emphasized by a more organic sound than heard on his previous record and inspired by a year’s worth of live shows and touring. The essence remains the same though: positive vibes, rhythmical prowess and catchy hooks that are guaranteed to get you singing along – funky, groovy indie pop with a lot of energy.

Despite all positivity, lockdowns and the pandemic have left their mark on the record: “Shooting Star” revolves around the thirst for connection, the magic of spontaneous encounters, of converging and departing. A modern big city fairytale, paying tribute to those special moments, even as they are irrevocably gone and memories start fading away.

The cinematic music video shot in Berlin’s vibrant Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg neighborhood is an example of expert visualization of a carefully crafted storyline, giving a glimpse

into Berlin’s indie nightlife – a must see for any Berlin fan. The cleverly arranged story and skillful songwriting result in one of those songs that you can listen to over and over again, and still discover something new every time.

“Shooting Star” is only the tip of the iceberg, three more songs revolving around big city realities and navigating life with a positive mindset are at the ready, and only one thing is certain – TIAHI’s music keeps radiating a joy of living that is hard to beat.

NECTAR release debut EP ‘LOVE IN LIMBO’ Featuring new single ‘Pipe Dreams’

by the partae November 2, 2022
written by the partae

Perth indie soul quartet Nectar have today released their debut EP ‘Love In Limbo’.

The lush 3 track EP was produced by Sam Ford (Pond, Abbe May) at Tone City Recording Studio. They’ve released a number of singles in the past year including this year’s ‘Waiting On The World Won’t Work’, scoring playlist support from Spotify’s (Local Noise, Indie Arrivals).

‘Love In Limbo’ features their new single ‘Pipe Dreams’, it’s a light hearted track centered around a hopeful thought of an attaining an utopia which seems to be ever so unattainable, with the band adding “we aren’t always pessimistic we promise, we know this is a dream many of us have and wish for! The themes of the song are really tied together with the cohesive instrumental changing moods from verse to chorus resolving on the point that all you can do is try to be your best self and to “take care”.

On this new EP the young 4 piece illustrate how their songwriting has evolved over this past year, going from strength to strength as they refine their silky jazz sound and aural personality with comparisons to Dope Lemon and Tame Impala.

“Love in Limbo comes from a deep love of party games, Matt is flexible and wins limbo everytime, even though Jac, Jack and Judah do yoga every morning to keep up.” NECTAR

Their love of chilled vibes shines brightly on their debut EP.  It’s the perfect playlist for a Sunday afternoon, their storytelling punctuated with slow jam melodies. It was through a shared love of similar music that sowed the NECTAR seed. The band members have a parent or close relative who either teaches or plays music, inspiring their songwriting and musicality, including Jac’s sibling Stella Donnelly.

“The process is natural it comes from the heart, not in a cardio-vascular sense but a loving and passionate way, often times it will be a result of jamming out ideas that flow out of our fingertips, which is then structured under scrutiny of the honest and open minded brotherhood that is Nectar. Judah then goes home and writes lyrics to put the ‘icing on the cake’ ; he is quite the chef in the kitchen and the studio.” NECTAR

Nectar will celebrate the release of their debut EP Love In Limbo’ in Perth on October 28.

They are also confirmed to perform at Nannup Music Festival 2023.

Gliding effortlessly between shades of psychedelia, neo-soul and indie soundscapes, Nectar are solidifying their position as one of Perth’s next big acts to keep a close eye on. The appeal of their music has been reflected in the band’s stats; with over 220K streams on Spotify alone, playlisting on Local Noise, Indie Arrivals, NMF (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland),  and a performance history that has seen Nectar excel as headliners and supports for artists including The Buoys and Keli Holiday.

They have previously been playlisted on: triple j, triple j unearthed, RTR (including performing at the RTR Radiothon Festival),  FBi, 2ser, SYN, with press support from Pilerats, AAA Backstage, Broken 8 Records, X Press Mag and Life Without Andy to name a few.

“Introduce yourself to NECTAR, they’re a band you’re going to want to be watching in the year ahead.” Pilerats

“The group claim to be putting out a little flavour, and they’re not lying.”

X-Press magazine

“A tasty slow jam that sees the young four-piece flexing their musical muscles and drawing from the chilled vibes of Dope Lemon and Tame Impala, the new single is a gorgeous piece featuring soaring guest vocals from Ella Pilcher”  Broken 8 Records

“Nectar deliver a haze of psychedelic sweetness on ‘Waiting On The World (Won’t Work)’, the Moroo four-piece somehow managing to top the catchiness of last year’s ‘Plateau’ by leaps and bounds”

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds return with new single ‘Pretty Boy’

by the partae November 1, 2022
written by the partae
Listen Here / Watch Official Lyric Video Here

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds today release a brand new single – ‘Pretty Boy’ – the first to be revealed from Noel’s forthcoming studio album. Listen HERE.

‘Pretty Boy’ signals the beginning of a new creative chapter. Recorded at Noel’s own studio in London, Lone Star Sound, and co-produced with Paul ‘Strangeboy’ Stacey, it also features long-time friend and collaborator Johnny Marr on guitar.  Representative of Noel’s unique exploratory approach to songwriting, the track has an evocative vocal set amongst a hypnotic bassline, driving beats, high-energy riffs and instant hook.  Matching the sonic refinement of ‘Pretty Boy’ is a striking new lyric video. Watch HERE.

Speaking about the new track, Noel says:
“For this new record it was the first thing I wrote, the first thing I demoed and the first thing I finished, so it’s only right that it’s the first thing people get to hear. Massive shout out to my mainest man Johnny Marr for taking it somewhere special. Oh … and watch out for a cameo from me in the video … first one to spot me wins a bag of Flamin’ Hot Wotsits Giants!!”

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ previous studio album Who Built The Moon?, was released in 2017, charting at Number 1 in the UK Official Albums Chart on release. Noel has remained a restless creative and followed this with a series of three critically acclaimed multi-genre EPs. June 2021 saw the release of Back The Way We Came: Vol 1 (2011-2021) – a career-defining Best Of celebrating a decade of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ richly diverse body of work. The album marked the band’s 4th consecutive Number 1 album, and the 12th Number 1 album across Noel’s prolific career.

This winter saw Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds complete a national UK tour of outdoor shows, culminating with an epic set on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage to one of the weekend’s biggest crowds.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ fourth studio album will be released next year, with further details to be revealed soon.

For the debut drop, Kimbra sits down with fellow artist Mitski to discuss primordial chaos as a catalyst for creativity and the power of error to lead them toward connection, with Lenz to chat about deconstructing old faith traditions, rebuilding ourselves in the light of our new experience and acting as an exercise in presence, and Jenkins discuss the weight of generous curiosity, stepping outside of exclusionary thinking and our society’s obsession with certainty.

Produced by Kimbra herself, ‘Playing With Fire‘ is a podcast that explores the topic of TRANSCENDENCE and how it manifests in people’s lives. Kimbra will ask a musician, an author, an actress, a priest and a best friend what transcendence means to them and how it has changed the way they live and work. For some, it’s found in the ecstatic, grand and psychedelic moments. For others, it’s hidden in the ordinary, and seemingly mundane. ‘Playing With Fire‘ is an exploration into the unknown, the intangible and the simply intoxicating path of seeking. Kimbra also explores her own experiences of transcendence, giving us further insight into her own process as a songwriter and producer.

The podcast launch comes on the heels of Kimbra’s upcoming album announcement – A Reckoning, set for release in 2023, which seeks to explore themes of vitality and aggression by channelling anger and protest, into forces for good. The album will highlight the role of the Feminine in restoring balance within all people, the planet and our internal reckoning with conflict. It is the story of a woman wrestling with the softness and strength within, and the search to integrate, assert and articulate the complexity of her experience.

This exploration of an inner world serves as a larger commentary on our need to ‘reckon’ with our own shadows before we can see change as a human collective. Perhaps a counter-narrative to the American dream, A Reckoning hints that our greatest tool toward peace, change and equality is the allowance of pain. It advocates the necessary and urgent belief that the Feminine in each of us and the mothering of one’s pain is the missing catalyst to rise.

Playing With Fire the podcast by Kimbra is out now, listen here.

‘Save Me‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Arches Releases ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’

by the partae November 1, 2022
written by the partae

Arches are Australia’s hottest new musical group boasting exciting genre-bending tunes, high-octane live shows, and a purposeful visual direction that is impossible to ignore. Comprised of Mason Rowley and Samuela Naborisi (now Meanjin | Brisbane based), Arches have already managed to stir an ecstatic hype around their music, leaving Australian listeners wanting more.

On October 21st Arches will be releasing their brand new single “Nothing Last Forever”. They wrote this song on a little writing trip when Sam and Mason rented a small airbnb on a farm in rural NSW. A lot of our mates had been going through breakups at the time so we thought we’d write this song for them. But it’s a harsh reality that we all have to face at some point. Not just in relationships and dating, but literally every human experience. Everything we have and will have comes and goes eventually, including us. So we wrote this song in honor of the human experience to remind us that really nothing lasts forever.

Both Far North Queensland raised and with Polynesian blood in their veins, Sam and Mason share a burning passion for musical performance and production. When Mason approached Sam in late 2021 and asked if he’d be interested in starting a new duo, neither of them had any idea that their skills and strengths would combine to make music so unique and exciting, the likes of which Australia has been dying to hear. Listen to any one of the Arches singles to date and you’ll instantly see what all the hype is about. Excellent production, stuck-in-your-head hooks, and left of field-arrangement, all while allowing pop their sensibilities to shine through. There’s no denying, Arches has something seriously special.

DJ Seinfeld announces exclusive Sydney/Eora headline show! Joined by moktar and IN2STELLAR

Astral People & WAT artists proudly present… DJ Seinfeld

Sydney/Eora, you’re in luck! DJ Seinfeld is returning this coming January 2023 to bring us a night of unparalleled talent in Sydney’s Roundhouse. Joining him on the night will be two local heavy hitters, moktar and IN2STELLAR, for a night of sweat-inducing tunes.

DJ Seinfeld’s music exists in a gossamer haze, a true master of delicate and purposeful production. An unintentional figurehead of the lo-fi scene with deep influence and inspiration across electronic music as a whole.

The Swedish producer’s latest album ‘Mirrors’ released in 2021 brought his sound into sharp focus, receiving resounding critical acclaim, the record manages to exist in a space that is both optimistic and melancholic. Recorded between Berlin and Malmo, ‘Mirrors’ is the follow up to Seinfeld’s 2017 debut album ‘Time Spent Away From U’ and his first for Ninja Tune.

The fastidious attention to detail that goes into his production is mirrored in his sets. An equally calculated affair, every element of Seinfeld on stage is curated to perfection; expert selections woven seamlessly together where euphoria is the default, and this is exactly what he’ll be treating us to in an unmissable Roundhouse show this January.

Joining him on the night is Sydney fan favourite moktar. At a time that’s seeing a championing of more traditional instrumentation in dance music, moktar is at the forefront of this groundswell. Exploring techno and IDM through the lens of Arabic percussion and instrumentation, he is undoubtedly one of the country’s most exciting emerging artists.

Rounding off the lineup is Melbourne/Naarm powerhouse duo IN2STELLAR. Inspired by 90’s rave and jungle, futuristic electro sounds and breakbeat, they’ve made a name for themselves around the Melbourne scene. Cutting their teeth at the infamous (but sadly closed) Lounge club’s night ‘Lucid’, they’ve been a welcome addition to club and festival lineups all over the country.

Join us for a night of steamy dancing and impeccable tunes this January – see you in the place!

Perth’s CLAY WESTERN returns with ‘NOTHING LASTS’

by the partae November 1, 2022
written by the partae

With a natural charisma that has endeared him to West Coast crowds over the last year, Perth indie-pop songwriter Clay Western now returns with gorgeous music in new single, ‘Nothing Lasts’.

Premiering with Backseat Mafia this week, the track follows on from ‘Stay High’ and ‘Shouldn’t Come Around’. Both songs earned Clay early praise with triple j, establishing the young WA artist as one to watch throughout 2022. To date, Clay’s music has garnered over 100,000 streams and has enjoyed playlisting and radio support from the likes of triple j and Spotify.

With ‘Nothing Lasts’, Clay Western further demonstrates his matured songwriting style and natural skills as a storyteller, all the while delivering the lyrics with a warmth and richness of tone.

Produced and engineered by San Cisco’s Jordi Davieson and Josh Biondillo out of their home studio in Fremantle, ‘Nothing Lasts’ was mixed by Clay Western’s close friend and longtime collaborator Dylan Ollivierre (The Money War), with mastering completed by Andrew Edgeson (Thelma Plum, Matt Corby) from Studios 301.

“I feel like ‘Nothing Lasts’ is as, if not more, relevant to me now than it was when I was first writing it. When we were writing the track, I was in a pretty volatile place. I was leaving everything I had become comfortable with in life and jumping into the unknown. From then through to the present, having moved to Byron and now Sydney within a four month period, I’ve learnt that you never know where life will take you. I feel like I’m learning to be comfortable living in the unknown. You have to throw yourself into situations and just hope for the best sometimes. These are the things I feel people grow from.”
CLAY WESTERN

As more new music waits on the horizon, Clay Western breaks open a new artistic chapter with the release of a song like ‘Nothing Lasts’ – it arrives, awash in stunning textures and a confidence in execution that can be heard throughout Clay’s work to date.

PRAISE FOR CLAY WESTERN

“Dripping with a delicious melancholia and framed by sky scraping choruses over an electronic thrum, this is a dynamic and heartening track that makes you simultaneously weep and laugh with joy.”
Backseat Mafia

“…dreamy but also driving. No time to stare up at the sky on this one, hands on the wheel!”
Triple J, Declan Byrne (‘Shouldn’t Come Around’, 2022)

“That beat just invites you to kick back and give into the message of this song! Love the warm and enveloping sounds in this one. Thanks Clay!”
Triple J Unearthed, Steph Hughes (‘Stay High’, 2021)

Coco Elise talk about their debut ep, making music on GarageBand, and more

by the partae October 31, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We are currently based in Boorloo, Perth,, chillin.

How did you first start playing music?

I was given a guitar as a child, then was spoken to by the musical gods and learned my one true calling was to play music and with this, I began to write music. And with that, here we are. Welcome.

What’s been happening recently?

Music-wise we’ve started to really get into it, we’ve got a lot of new tunes we’re really excited about! We’ve just been playing a lot of shows and feeling them lows. We’ve also been a bit sad, and that’s not all bad. It’s important to feel as sad as possible when writing music so emotion can be successfully portrayed.

What influenced the sound and songwriting for your new single ‘Wish you’d show’?

Mainly Mac de Marco and Kate Bollinger, with a dash of Vampire Weekend. Big fan of how they can make such stripped back music sound so good.

How did you go about writing Wish you’d show and what does this track mean to you?

This track and “Sun may shine” were kind of written at the same time, Harry came over and did some Saxophone overdubs on a beat I came up with while Isaiah was asleep on the couch. Our old bass player Dan came around after and tracked some fantastic bass bits after. It’s by far our favourite song at the moment, and it’s a classic little love song. There’s definitely heaps out there, but they always mean the most to whoever’s making them!

Your debut EP is on the way, please tell us about your journey with this EP:

This EP has a special place in my head as it’s been completely produced and mixed in my room on GarageBand. Starting out I didn’t have too much to work with and I feel like a nice unique sound has come out of the process. I’ve been sitting on these tracks for a while, and was pretty unsure how they’d be received. We’ve had some awesome support lately, and it feels really good to get them out.

What can we expect?

Life. Thrills. Freedom.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

All tracks were mastered with Gareth Henderson (thanks Gareth), everything else was done with the band in my bedroom.

How did you approach the recording process?

I usually just play around on the guitar or a synth and see if anything nice comes out of that, that’s usually the first step. Then I sing over whatever I have, and build everything else from there. Every song’s a little different!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

A lot of Kate Bollinger, and a local resurfaced band Butter who are just amazing.

What do you like to do away from music?

Play with animals, change the world, and inspire the generation to come.

What’s planned for 2022 going into 2023?

We’re absolutely loving playing live gigs around town, so we’ll keep doing that! We love reworking the songs for live performances, keep its really fun for us and hopefully people who come see us as well. We’ve got another EP ready to go as well, stay tuned…

Favourite food and place to hangout?

We love getting burgers at Flipside in Freo, and see whatever is going on at Mojo’s. Perhaps even have a nice beverage, if we’re feeling crazy.

Wet Denim

by the partae October 30, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We are currently based in Pōneke (Wellington, New Zealand)

How did Wet Denim form?

Brothers Joe and Jack (Bass & Drums) have been jamming together all their lives and have always wanted to be in a band together. After both moving to Wellington, it was the perfect opportunity to make this happen. Joe saw Nick perform at an open mic night a couple of months before the idea of Wet Denim came about, (and quickly forgot about him!). When it came time to fully assemble the band, Jack brought in his flatmate Luca on guitar and keys, and Joe finally remembered to ask Nick to join.

What’s been happening recently?

Coming out of the gate in May, post Covid, we were hungry to play as many shows as we could. Over the next four 4 months we played 8 local shows in Wellington including some sold out headliners. During this time we were also working on recording our EP. In the more recent months, the live shows have been put on the backburner whilst we wrapped up the EP recording, and as we prepare for our final Wellington show in 2022.

How’s the NZ music scene at the moment?

The NZ music scene, more specifically the Welly live scene has been pumping since shows started again yearly this year. Everyone is super supportive of each other, going to each other’s shows, promoting music, it’s a real community vibe.

Your latest single ‘Free’ is out on the 27th of October, what’s influenced the sound and songwriting?

All of the music we collectively listened to growing up has influenced our songwriting big time. This recent track takes quite a ‘Kings of Leon’ approach that we all froth!

How did you go about writing ‘Free’?

At the start of 2021 Joe was playing around on the Logic Pro X recording software and came up with the first idea of ‘Free’ with the intro up until the first verse. When we had our first jam he showed everyone the idea and from there we formed the idea into a full song  – with Luca adding his sauce, Nick singing the melody and Jack driving the groove. And that’s what really grew our bond as a band. ‘Free’ was our very first song we finished.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

Recording ‘Free’ began in Joe’s bedroom and then was taken to Avalon studios where we worked with Shaan Singh and Ben O’Leary, who helped us take the track from a demo to a release quality track.  ‘Free’ was mixed by Neil MacLeod and  mastered by Chris Chetland at KOG Studios.

How did you approach the recording process?

As mentioned before, the original demo of ‘Free’ was the fruits of Joe working away in his bedroom studio. We developed the ideas whilst jamming which Shaan and Ben then helped us track into the song.

What do you most enjoy about touring NZ?

We haven’t got there yet, but we have a few shows and festivals over summer that are outside of Pōneke that we are super excited for!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

We are really loving the music that is coming out of Wellington at the moment. Arjuna Oaks, Haven, Mikeyy, Frank on Tap, and Revulva are a few of our faves.

What do you like to do away from music?

Jack and Luca are both designers, visual and spatial respectively, which takes up a bunch of their time, Nick is right into his fitness and Joe has nothing else going for him.

Favorite food and place to hangout?

We love to hang at Raglan Roast Cafe and sip on their yummy yummy brew.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

We have just recently released our second single ‘Free’. On November 17th we have our first headlining show at San Fran which will act as a taster for our EP set for release in December. We have a soggy summer lined up where we will be stretching our legs and taking our EP outside of the capital. You can catch us at Cape Estate on Boxing Day, Outfield Festival, and 121 Festival. Yeooooww!

Powerhouse Asian Female Producers – RayRay and JVNA, Join Forces for Their Emotive but Hard-Hitting Bilingual Collaboration “Butterfly” From RayRay’s Forthcoming Debut Album “Unearthly World.” “Butterfly” is Out Now on Barong Family

by the partae October 30, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: RayRay & JVNA
Title: Butterfly
Label: Barong Family

Download / Stream

RayRay teams up with JVNA for a stunning collaboration – “Butterfly” from RayRay‘s upcoming debut album, making for a union of two killer females, originally hailing from Taiwan RayRay and US-born Taiwanese JVNA. The single showcases both artists’ talents perfectly, from JVNA‘s and RayRay‘s dreamy singing performances to both future bass and melodic trap production prowess. Opening with sultry, breathy vocals and an ominous bassline, “Butterfly” starts with an ethereal feel and blossoms into a drop featuring serrating synths and deep bass undertones that give it an edge. The mixture of feminine emotiveness and unquestionable sonic confidentiality makes the track an unusual creation where the lyrics are sung in English and Mandarin. RayRay and JVNA‘s collaboration is out now on Yellow Claw‘s Barong Family imprint and will also be featured on RayRay‘s forthcoming debut album “Unearthly World.” Read on what both artists have to say about their new release:

“One of my favorite songs on the album. It’s definitely a unique combination between me and JVNA. I’ve wanted to work with her for a very long time. She is such an inspiring person. It’s very interesting and fun to blend her airy music sound with my hard trap elements together. We started making this song in July 2021 last year and actually came up with the vocals first. Be strong and brave, and eventually, you will be like a butterfly emerging from the cocoon. This is also the experience we have been learning as artists. Life isn’t a bed of roses, and there are a lot of obstacles. However, as long as you pull it through, you will become a beautiful butterfly. It’s also a tribute to our friends and fans in Taiwan and Asia.” – RayRay

“I wrote ‘Butterfly‘ with RayRay wanting to write a track that felt empowering to both of us. As female producers/DJs we’ve bonded over our experiences of being in a male-dominated industry and the feeling of needing to prove ourselves constantly. This song is about taking a leap of faith in pursuing our dreams, becoming the person we want to become, and succeeding in our goals. When RayRay and I initially met, we clicked instantly. She is one of the few friends I have in the industry to whom I can relate and talk about the similar struggles and experiences we have in our work field.” – JVNA

RayRay has landed loudly and exploded onto the international dance scene in the past few years. With gigs at major festivals like Glastonbury, ADE, Tomorrowland, Sonar, and Arcadia, and her purple hair as her signature look. She cemented her status in the scene as a Red Bull Thre3style competition winner and through a series of studio sessions with artists such as Skrillex, Yellow Claw, Steve Aoki, and Atmozfears. All that while honing and training her vocals with voice professionals. After being named on Beatport’s HOT 100 Future Bass/Trap Top 10 List in 2016, her work ethic and signature sound caught the ears of Yellow Claw, who brought RayRay on tour in 2019 and quickly signed her to a management deal and to the Barong Family where she released three EPs: “Purple Alien” and “Alien Invasion” and 2021’s Brand New EP “Alien Mutation.” RayRay‘s new home on the Dutch imprint has gotten her name on feverish demand, and today she tours her signature sound all over the globe, creating seismic experiences for her newfound fans. With releases on Spinnin’ Records, Protocol Recordings, Dim Mak, as well as releases on Tiësto‘s label Musical Freedom to follow. Despite the pandemic, 2020 and 2021 didn’t slow her down one bit. With the dance scene at a standstill, RayRay started her live streaming channel on Twitch in early 2020 and, within a year, became the top Twitch “Live Music” Streamer, according to IMS Business report. During the same period landing a residency on Tiesto‘s Musical Freedom Sirius XM Radio show. 2021 saw her release EPs “Lasergun” with Yellow Claw, “Pump It Up” with Moksi, and “Where Are My Friends” with Sihk, to name a few. Needless to say, RayRay‘s spaceship is rocketing across the stars and doesn’t seem to slow down anytime soon.

California-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist JVNA produces electronic music that plays at the dichotomy of light and dark, bass and melody, organic and synthetic. Raised by Taiwanese immigrants, JVNA studied classical piano from the age of 6 and started writing songs when she was 11. Her studies continued at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she learned to score films and video games. Initially, JVNA made fun edits and remixes of her favorite anime and video game soundtracks; her take on MapleStory‘s “Login Theme” caught fire on the internet, earning half a million views in 24 hours. Her 2018 song “I’m With You,” inspired by her father’s death two years earlier, dared to dive deep into an emotional world. JVNA self-directed the song’s music video. The Follow-up single “Catch Me,” released in 2019, took JVNA on a sold-out tour across the United States. Due to the pandemic, it was canceled, and JVNA returned to the studio to focus on the album’s production. She pushed herself to incorporate more live keys, piano, and organic textures. In 2021 JVNA released her debut studio album – “Hope In Chaos,” which is a diverse collection of styles featuring JVNA‘s voice like it’s never been heard before, opening up about so much more than the standard dance floor love songs.
