Trailblazing rapper and producer Agung Mango today shares his feverishly anticipated EP, MAN ON THE GO. LISTEN HERE

For the Naarm/Melbourne-based artist, MAN ON THE GO arrives after years spent quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting artists to bubble up from Australia’s underground rap scene. Across his two previous EPs Son Of Agung and OPENFORBUSINESS, Agung Mango’s mainstream stature has risen steadily in time, having landed festival slots and collaborations with tastemakers including Genesis Owusu, 1300 and Lucianblomkamp.

A heavy-hitting R&B album that constantly tests the borders of the genre, MAN ON THE GO flexes his dexterous, free-flowing lyricism and welcomes a level of introspection that makes the EP’s vulnerability so striking. Of the EP he shares, “MAN ON THE GO is an experiment with pop music and displays a more polished version of myself. The goal was to create something out of my comfort zone.

The EP explores the theme of duality, and the ups and downs I experienced throughout the process of making it. Something that I feel like many artists go through on their journeys. The project is both reflective and definitive of who I was at the time of creating this music, and is a great example of the constantly evolving Agung Mango – a testament to the EP title MAN ON THE GO”.

Across the seven tracks we see Agung Mango piece together a whirlwind yet cohesive sound that takes sonic cues from an underground, future-leaning production that moves through flows and cadences like no one else. From his steadying releases ‘RUNAWAY’ and ‘GUAP POP (ft. Genesis Owusu)’, Agung Mango conjures on sounds of previous releases and expands on his creative exuberance in a reflection of his artist career so far. We see him speak on the sad reality of addiction in ‘IN2DEEP!’ before delving into the undeniable bond between two people in an a81yann-featured ‘INTERTWINED’. We then turn to ‘foRREst (ft. MAMMOTH)’, ‘MISERABLE MAN’ and ‘HEADBACK’, all of which respectively look towards mental illness and the trials and tribulations of home, city life and nature in his most honest and raw form.

Since his debut in 2017, Agung Mango has cultivated a following across triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, SYN FM, NME, Acclaim, 10 Magazine, Music Feeds, Complex Australia and Pilerats amongst others, shared stages with JID, Genesis Owusu, WIKI, Milan Ring and more, plus festivals including BIGSOUND and Laneway Festival. Having kicked off earlier this month, Agung Mango has also embarked on his biggest Australian tour yet, with tickets on sale now. “We are very excited to be playing our first headline show in Melbourne in over 5 years. As a band we started out here and cut our teeth playing local gigs so now that half of the band lives overseas and most of our touring is spent in other countries it definitely holds special significance to us to return to and play to a home crowd. We’re also excited to be performing some current favorites of Melbourne’s music scene in Glass Beams and Rona. Both have been real highlights of the past year and a half for me. So as well as being a rare opportunity for us to play in Melbourne, with those support acts it promises to be an excellent night of music from start to finish.”

MayhemTom – Play Toff Melbourne Tonight 13 October!

by the partae October 13, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?
Melbourne.

How did you first start playing music?
I started with violin in primary school, moved to drums, piano, music theory and guitar in high school and beyond.

Please tell us how MayhemTom first came to be:
I started as a bass player vocalist, but moved to vocals alone as we got serious in a funk/rock band. The band was called Electric Mayhem, which is where Mayhemtom came from literally. I decided to put together songs for an album and came back to that name after trying to a few other names, only to find they were all taken!

What’s been happening recently with MayhemTom?
I have just released an album on streaming services, there is a vinyl edition on the way and we have been rehearsing for an Album launch taking place later this week.

Your album ‘The Art Of Flying While Falling’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
It is an amalgamation of styles including straight Indie rock artists like Radiohead and The National to more folk/singer songwriters like Paul Kelly and Sufjan Stevens. The songwriting came from a period of stress and burnout during work as an oncologist. I hadn’t played regularly or written anything for over 15 years prior. The sounds are largely organic instruments including drums, piano, strings, guitar. But I love electronic music too and there are some synth sounds blended in too.

How did you go about writing?
Alot of the song came from moods/poetry which were put to chords. Previously I built songs around chords and I always drifted away from standard I, IV, V chords or threw in weird dissonant chords and pulled melodies to match the chords. For this, I allowed the melodies in my head to find the chords, so it is a bit more accessible but there are also some complex arrangements. Even time signatures, such as in the track Alone, which switches between 5/4 and 4/4 was built to fit the lyrics.

What does this album mean to you?
It’s an emotional outlet and what I had dreamt of doing when I first started playing in bands. Getting back to music has been rediscovering myself.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
I gathered together some professional musicians (Maria Moles drums, Peter Burgess bass, Paul Zubrinich keys) and recorded in a studio in Melbourne called Oaklands. The album was produced by an experienced producer Dusty Teal. The initial recording occurred in May 2021, but we were hampered by several COVID lockdowns. So while the bass, drums and some piano was done then, the rest we pieced together over several sessions later in 2021/2022. Some were back in the studio, the synths were done from home. The vocals were tracked in the producer’s home studio. The strings and backing vocals were done in separate studio sessions.

How did you approach the recording/production process?
I put together some complicated demos with the instrumentation I was after tracked on synth including the string parts. We worked on them as a band and pieced together the arrangements to suit the music and that’s what we took into the recording studio to put down. I then added synths, guitars and flourishes towards the end. The final mix was then mastered using Cloudbounce an AI service.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
My favourites mix currently has Josh Pyke, Talking Heads, Spacey Jane, Gang of Youths and Courtney Barnett. But an album I have on repeat ATM is Samora Pinderhughes “Grief”.

What do you like to do away from music?
I am a busy oncologist, so I deal with a lot of grief and death. Which is why finding my back to music has been so therapeutic.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
We are looking at playing a bit more following the album launch including some local gigs as well as some smaller festivals over summer.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
I don’t really have a favourite food, but I pretty much love most South Indian curries my mum cooks. The band have a bit of history hanging out at pubs around Brunswick such as the Rainbow Hotel, The Standard or The Rose, so it’s always nostalgic heading back there.

HUNTLY Sign to Dot Dash / Remote Control + Release new single & video ‘Undertage’

by the partae October 13, 2022
written by the partae
Emotional dance music pioneers Huntly meld UK garage, breakbeat, electronic-pop and alternative R&B in their high-tempo new single ‘Undertage‘. It arrives alongside news of their signing to Dot Dash / Remote Control Records.

In Huntly’s signature polished and meticulous production style, the Melbourne-based duo fuse driving DnB breaks with silky R&B vocals and vulnerable lyricism on this track. On the subject matter, ‘Undertage’ is a unique insight into moments of pure happiness that come with newfound crushes and friendships. It also demonstrates Huntly’s exploration of intimacy in all forms; platonic is as important as romantic, and a love for your friends is equally as crucial as those feelings of deep love we can feel for romantic partners. Vocalist Elspeth Scrine expands saying “I wrote Undertage when I was overseas before the pandemic hit, in a steamy Berlin club that the track is named after. It has samples I recorded on my phone, outside the club and from hazy uber pool rides (remember those?). ‘Undertage’ is about that energy you get from a crush when you meet someone and wonder if you might end up together… when it’s all open and full of possibilities.”

They continue with how the visualiser came about, saying “It only made sense to us to make a visualiser for this song that compiled together video footage from our favourite club spaces here in our own community. It is a clip filled with the late night/early morning dancefloors that have held us, and the people who have healed us.”

Between Elspeth Scrine and Andrew Huhtanen McEwan there exists a strong creative partnership, one that has been built upon from years of friendship. This friendship has bred an intuitive and unique artistry; perfectly exemplified on the band’s acclaimed 2019 debut album, Low Grade Buzz. Its arrival in 2019 was a touchstone moment for Huntly; the album bringing domestic and global recognition for the act, and landing with impact. Low Grade Buzz, bold and striking in its tone and execution, positioned Huntly as a dynamic new force in the Australian music community. As the album cycle continued, the industry responded: Huntly earned nominations for the esteemed Australian Music Prize (2019), and at the AIR Awards (2020) for Best Independent Dance Album alongside industry figures such as Flume.

Acclaim came from radio and press tastemakers alike; Low Grade Buzz was named 3RRR’s Album of the Week while singles enjoyed premiere opportunities via triple j, as well as rotation adds across Australian channels including FBi Radio, MTV, SYN and Rage. Internationally Huntly’s music drew praise from outlets like Stereogum, Noisey and as part of Anthony Fantano’s weekly ‘Best Tracks’ round up on The Needle Drop. The release also saw Huntly featured as a Rising Artist by Vinyl Me Please, a placement marked by an exclusive vinyl release of Low Grade Buzz throughout North America. With singles featuring across countless Spotify editorial playlists, and a feature as Apple Music’s ‘Best New Artist Of The Week’, Low Grade Buzz swiftly garnered over one million streams and amassed widespread praise from industry and the loyal music community alike.

On the live front, Huntly have supported the likes of pop heavyweights such as G-Flip and experimental luminaries like Laurel Halo. Their dynamic live presence has graced the stages of queer clubs, to Melbourne Fashion Festival, from Mardi Gras, Midsumma, and Grampians Music Festival, all the way to YPSIGROCK Festival (Sicily).

Join Huntly as they cry on the many dance floors with ‘Undertage’.

The Kooks + The Vanns @ Festival Hall, Melbourne, 6th October, 2022

by the partae October 10, 2022
written by the partae

Photography + Words – Darren Chan

UK indie-pop band The Kooks have stayed the distance. Their Australian tour marks 15 years since their iconic debut album “Inside In / Inside Out”.

To a packed crowd at Festival Hall, The Vanns opened the evening unleashing their brand of loud and proud alternative rock. They didn’t hold back from delivering a short but energetic live set, complete with plenty of ear bleedingly loud fuzzed out guitar solos.

The Kooks hit the stage to cheers, performing the first six songs from the debut album. Starting their acoustic anthem “Seaside”, rolling into the guitar-driven “See the World”,  “Sofa Song”, “Ooh La”, and “You Don’t Love Me” had the crowd dancing.

The crowd chanting “Ohh Aah” in unison to the start of the anthemic “Bad Habit”, then leading into the catchy “Sweet Emotion” off their 2014 album “Listen”. The band showcased a few tracks off their latest “10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark” with “Modern Days” and “Connection”.

Singer Luke Pritchard thanked and acknowledged the fans in attendance, with guitarist/keyboardist Hugh Harris remarking “it felt like coming home”.

The band didn’t disappoint fans as they played more tracks from “Inside In / Inside Out” finishing with their hit song “Naive”.

The Kooks mentioned in a recent tv interview that at their stage of life, they chase nostalgia. And for myself and those who attended, hearing their music was a flashback to our youth.

“The future is high as hell”
Life Without Andy

In the thick of their fast ascent and recent appearance on triple j’s Like A Version, surf-rock outfit The Terrys‘ debut album True Colour has arrived. LISTEN HERE.

Recorded at The Grove alongside Jack Nigro (Skegss, DMA’S, Julia Jacklin, Middle Kids), True Colour is fun, free-spirited and most significantly, creatively ambitious for the Gerringong outfit known for their easy-going, take-it-as-it-comes approach to life. “Our main thing was ‘just don’t overthink it and trust each other,” says vocalist Jacob of putting True Colour to tape. “Musically, it was a huge learning curve,” adds guitarist Lukas. “We all progressed so much as musicians… then we realised we’re just little fish in a massive tank and there’s a huge ocean out there to explore.”

Lifting notes from The Vaccines, Wavves and The Wombats’ festival-ready hooks and bright, fast-charged guitar lines, throughout their debut The Terrys‘ message is clear – a deeply contemplative release encouraging listeners to embrace the highs and lows as they happen; to find their true colours. “I hope they will listen to it and gain a sense that life is actually nice… that when they hear the record they can look outside and think ‘Oh, today’s going to be a good day’,” Jacob explains. “I hope they get a sense of life and ultimately make their own decisions on what the lyrics mean to them… that’s why it’s True Colour. We want them to think “What’s your true colour?”

Sanguine, empathetic and full of heart across twelve tracks, including their varied singles ‘Situation 99‘, ‘Rolling Stone‘, ‘Waiting For You‘ and ‘IDK‘, True Colour is a rich listen across genre and intent. Here they further their sun-dappled origins to expand their musical world into garage and DIY, psychedelia, funk and most boldly, hip hop through the Esoterik (Bliss & Eso) and Scraps featuring ‘Good Day‘.

Speaking of their collaboration, Eso shares “I actually met the boys on a plane… I was already seated and they walked on and instantly I was like ahh here comes a band, the amount of noise they were making. They didn’t notice me until the end of the flight, I got up and they start yelling out “Oiiii Esso mate!!” Some business guy next to me started shooting me a look like who do you think you are, then one of The Terrys’ leaned over to him and said “This bloke’s only one of the most iconic rappers in the country!” We kicked it off from that moment onwards. The boys hit me up a while later asking if I wanted to be on their track, and I was like always down to listen… and here we are. Love the track, love the boys.”

A rally cry for mates, music and good times, ‘Good Day‘ boasts of the love and positivity that’s “gonna shine through.” Speaking to the release, The Terrys share “Man, this song is huge for us because I remember listening to this podcast that Eso did with a bloke named Josh Wade, and Eso just spat some serious knowledge on me. He pretty much said in the podcast you can do whatever you want as long as truly believe in yourself 100%. I took that on board and I would listen to this podcast, I reckon at least once a day, while I was mowing lawns and whipper-snippering and just working my little bum off. I would just dream about what I could do in my life.

Now fast forward five years and I’ve made a song with Eso! It’s just insane to me. We’ve also got one of our best friends on, who I also used to look up to so much in high school with his rapping, Scraps.  He held his own and absolutely did the most banging verse straight after Eso which is pretty daunting but it didn’t even worry Scraps whatsoever. This song is huge for us and we hope that you guys like it just as much as we do.”

As a whole, True Colour is testimony to The Terrys‘ mastery in balancing the carefree and the considered. Sealing the auspicious fever that’s followed the group since their share-house jam beginnings, True Colour seals the group’s fate, positing their ambition as more infectious and cogent than many first thought. Experience The Terrys live across their national headline tour this October – November, joined by Nerve, Gold Fang, Dear Sunday and their inaugural Battle of the Bands winner Divers – see all tour dates + purchase tickets BELOW.

Good Intent – Return With Expanded Artist Support Program ‘Greater Good’

by the partae October 6, 2022
written by the partae

After the inaugural launch of ‘Greater Good’ in 2021, Good Intent are back at it again with their independent artist initiative. The program gives back to the independent artist community, by providing in kind services and a cash grant totalling $20,000 AUD (double their first year pool).

‘Greater Good’ is a program designed to provide a launchpad for exceptional emerging artists, by utilising Good Intent’s Artist Services’ pro-bono, a cash grant of $4,000 AUD to help further develop their career, plus a stack of goodness from their new partners Studios 301, Billy Zammit, Make Merchandise, PLAKKIT and Ben Mitchell.

“Last year we were blown away by hundreds of applicants from across the country. The team and I discovered so many amazing new acts and had some great conversations helping guide some incredible talent. We were chatting to some mates with similar values in giving back to the community, and decided to bring it all together this year for something that’ll really be a kick-start to an emerging artist’s career,” says Artist and Label Services Manager Rick Bridgman.

The Artist Services’ contribution will cover Artist Management Consultation, PR, Radio Plugging, DSP  and Playlist Pitching, Digital Marketing and Label Services. Through their sister company Good Loco, the offering will also boast hire and a photoshoot with acclaimed creative Billy Zammit (DMA’s, Triple One, Ninajirachi, Young Franco).

Further new additions feature a package from Sydney-based recording powerhouse Studios 301 including Dry Hire of Studio 2, Mix & Dolby Atmos Music Mix from Stefan Du Randt and Mastering from Steve Smart (Flume, King Stingray, DZ Deathrays). The team at Make Merchandise have offered up a fresh batch of AS Colour Staple Tees and printing to fire up the act’s merch game, and PLAKKIT are on board providing a capital city run of posters and distro to get the word out about the artist’s music and touring efforts. Creative assets will be provided by independent Graphic Designer / Illustrator and long-time collaborator Ben Mitchell (Bootleg Rascal, Critical Slide).

“The prodigious Jelly Oshen was the winner in 2021 and we loved working with Jelly and his family on his releases. We can’t wait to check out a bunch of new acts in 2022 and pass on the experiences that we’ve learned over the years, from working with some of the best in the business throughout the course of our respective careers.”

For more information on the ‘Greater Good’ and how to apply, visit www.goodintent.com.au

Good Intent first launched in late-2018 and offers a range of services across artist management, PR, radio plugging, venue and event bookings, tastemaker club and radio promotions, playlist pitching, digital marketing and label services.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis | 2nd show announced: live at Palais Theatre, St Kilda – Wednesday 30 November

by the partae October 6, 2022
written by the partae

CARNAGE is out now – listen here

With their headline performance at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on Friday 2 December officially sold out, promoters Frontier Touring and Supersonic are pleased to announce Nick Cave and Warren Ellis will perform a second show at the iconic St Kilda venue, with a new show added today for Wednesday 30 November.

The Australian Carnage tour follows the release of Cave and Ellis’ widely acclaimed CARNAGE album, and sees the pair return to the seaside suburb where The Bad Seeds played their first ever live show back in 1983.

These unmissable Palais shows – part of Cave and Ellis’ national 17-date CARNAGE tour – are presented in conjunction with ALWAYS LIVE, the state-wide celebration of contemporary live music supported by the Victorian Government through Visit Victoria. The Palais gigs will be preceded by two sold out shows at Hanging Rock, in VIC’s Macedon Ranges.

In September, Cave announced the release of his new book Faith, Hope and Carnage, co-written with Observer journalist Seán O’Hagan, the pair examining questions of faith, art, music, freedom, grief and love over 40 hours in conversation.

Tickets to the 2nd Palais Theatre show go on sale Monday 10 October (1pm AEDT) via frontiertouring.com/nickcavewarrenellis. See nickcave.com for full tour dates and information.

THE OLD BAR CELEBRATES SURVIVING 21 YEARS WITH A MEGA BIRTHDAY BASH Featuring Cash Savage and The Last Drinks, SPOD & Stacks More!

by the partae October 6, 2022
written by the partae

Fitzroy’s filthiest icon The Old Bar turns 21 this year and they are throwing themselves a big birthday bash on Saturday December 3.

The Oldie will celebrate two decades of blood, sweat and beers with an epic lineup, featuring Cash Savage and The Last Drinks, SPOD, Skyscraper Stan and The Commission Flats, Ute Root and Streetsweeper. Proudly presented by ALWAYS LIVE and Mountain Goat, the show kicks off at 7pm and tickets will only be available on the door.

Melbourne’s divest dive bar is renowned for showcasing some of this country’s biggest talents on the smallest stage. This massive handpicked lineup represents everything the owners – Joel Morrison, Singa Unlayati and Liam Matthews – love about the place, with many of the artists cutting their teeth in the legendary venue including Cash Savage and The Last Drinks who considers The Old Bar their spiritual home.

“Cash is pretty much our patron saint of the Oldie,” says Morrison. “From playing heaps and heaps of gigs here early on and just generally being here all the time (including being told to stop being so loud in the front bar when there were quieter gigs on midweek), to coaching the Old Bar Unicorns footy team and celebrating all our milestones along the way, Cash has always had our back and it’s a very special bond we don’t take lightly. Seeing Cash and The Last Drinks play for the first time at Oldie you just knew they were world class and if we helped along the way then that’s one of the reasons Oldie is a special place.”

The Old Bar has well and truly earned its status as a shining beacon of filth in a sea of gentrification. While the building may be falling apart, The Old Bar remains a steadfast haven in the face of an ever-changing suburb where every new development is slicker than the last.

“When I see a cool dive bar in a film I get so warm and fuzzy and always wanted to be a part of that,” adds Matthews. “The reality though is very different, keeping the place (kinda) clean is almost impossible, stopping jerks from breaking shit and writing their names on everything is an ongoing nightmare and the building is slowly crumbling around us. But the alternative is that fake dive bar aesthetic that some go for which just sucks. The area keeps getting shiny around us but we are just the lump of coal in the diamond mine – is that a saying? It is now.”

This show is part of ALWAYS LIVE, a new state-wide celebration of contemporary live music supported by the Victorian Government through Visit Victoria.

Khruangbin announce intimate Melbourne club show – 170 Russell

by the partae October 6, 2022
written by the partae

‘First Class Tour’ | Nov/Dec 2022

It’s the hottest tour this Spring: critically acclaimed Houston, Texas three-piece Khruangbin return to Australia for the first time since 2019, playing their biggest live shows ever down under. With seven sold-out headline shows in Fremantle, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, plus a set at Adelaide’s Harvest Festival, the band have one extra present for VIC fans up their sleeve…

With the virtuosic trio’s previously announced performance at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl now officially sold out, Khruangbin – Laura ‘Leezy’ Lee (bass), Donald Johnson (drums) and Marko Speer (guitar) – announce a final, intimate club show at 170 Russell on Sunday 4 December. Joining them on the night is hometown groove cosmonauts Mildlife.

Tickets for this intimate club gig from one of the world’s leading bands go on sale Tuesday 11 October (1pm local time) via frontiertouring.com/khruangbin – these will go fast, so don’t delay! Frontier, Chugg and Penny Drop Members can also access the Member’s Presale, which begins Monday 10 October (12pm local time, see website for full info).

Just last month Khruangbin celebrated the release of a new 8-track collaborative album Ali (via label Dead Oceans), recorded with Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré. The musical pairing sees Khruangbin join forces with the celebrated musician in paying homage to his late father, famed Mali singer and multi-instrumentalist Ali Farka Touré. The resulting eight songs, as GQ puts it, “expands Khruangbin’s sound into blues territory with a hint of West African palm wine music. It’s more pulsing and energetic. You can zone out and cut a rug… First they pull you in. Then they make you float….”.

Universally adored, sonic instrumental world-builders Khruangbin possess a legendary live show, selling-out multiple nights at iconic venues worldwide. Their Melbourne shows are presented in partnership with ALWAYS LIVE, a state-wide celebration of contemporary live music supported by the Victorian Government through Visit Victoria.
