Iconic comedy troupe, The Mighty Boosh are returning to Australia with a captivating photo exhibition.

by the partae July 11, 2023
written by the partae

Diving into the whimsical world of The Mighty Boosh, actor and photographer Dave Brown unveils over twenty years of iconic memories from the global phenomenon.

Australia, July 10, 2023 – The Mighty Boosh, are back, this time as the stars of ‘Behind The Boosh’ – a captivating photo exhibition that delves deep into the whimsical world of the iconic comedy troupe. Presented by Behind the Gallery on the twenty-year anniversary of The Mighty Boosh pilot. This exclusive showcase invites viewers on a mesmerising journey through the lens of one friend and integral member, Dave Brown.

‘Behind The Boosh’ offers a rare glimpse into the extraordinary creative universe of The Mighty Boosh, the award-winning British comedy sensation created by Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt that became a cult hit in the 2000s. With its roots in stage shows that garnered acclaim at the Edinburgh and Melbourne Comedy Festivals including Perrier award best newcomers and Barry Humphries award, The Mighty Boosh evolved into a global phenomenon, encompassing a radio series, three television series, and two sold-out live tours.

As part of The Mighty Boosh since their inception in the late ’90s, Dave Brown has played a pivotal role in the show’s success. Beyond his iconic portrayal of Bollo the Gorilla and other unforgettable characters like Naan bread, Black Frost and Australian zookeeper Joey Moose, Brown’s creative genius extends to diverse artistic realms. He compiled and designed The Mighty Book of Boosh, tour posters, DVDs, set graphics, and merchandise. Additionally, he has lent his talents to choreography, music and capturing the essence of The Mighty Boosh through his photography.

Reflecting on his experience and his upcoming exhibition, Dave Brown shared, “These images are like children to me, badly behaved children with no manners but also beautifully funny, insanely dressed up children that are 2 dimensional and don’t move. I can’t wait to set these kids loose on the Australian public, I think I may have taken the child metaphor too far. But I love these pics, incredible memories of a special time with my Boosh band of brothers and sharing them with our beautiful Aussie Boosh fans is long overdue”.

‘Behind The Boosh’ showcases Brown’s extensive photographic archive, carefully curated to present a collection of his personal favorites. These captivating images span over 20 years, capturing poignant moments from early live gigs, behind-the-scenes glimpses during TV show filming, and the electric energy of their global tours. Through Brown’s lens, viewers gain an intimate insight into the lives and characters of The Mighty Boosh creative collective, providing a visual narrative unlike any other.

“The love The Mighty Boosh still has to this day, is comparable to legendary acts such as Monty Python and continues to draw in people of all ages.

“It was such a bonus to have a great photographer who was part of the show, Dave never missed anything!  “I almost find it difficult to look at them because it takes me back immediately to that time, and because Dave was always taking photos, the snaps are genuine; they’re not posed.” Said, Noel Fielding.

Julian Barratt adds, “Dave is a lens with legs! Ever since I have known him, he’s had a camera strapped to his face. I have a terrible memory which is why Dave is my saviour, if we are our memories then without Dave Brown I simply would not exist.”

“Not only has it forged a haven for those on the fringes of society, but it continues to captivate audiences with its unique comedy, art direction and the extraordinary world it has created through surrealism and fantasy. Our aim was to provide Australia with a remarkable Boosh Experience, and with Dave’s photographs transporting viewers directly into the world of Howard and Vince, we believe that “Behind The Boosh” will accomplish just that,” Stephen Dallimore, Behind the Gallery Creative Director, says of the upcoming exhibition.

‘Come with us now, on a journey through time and space, to the world of the mighty boosh’ as ‘Behind The Boosh’ unveils an extraordinary collection of photographs, each an unparalleled visual spectacle that pays homage to The Mighty Boosh and Dave Brown’s unrivalled artistry.

The exhibition will be hosted by actor and photographer Dave Brown this August in both Melbourne and Sydney.

The Australian Ballet School presents Summer Season with Butterfly 9 & 10 December, Arts Centre Melbourne Tickets now on sale

by the partae October 21, 2022
written by the partae
“…the ballet’s narrative itself has been lovingly designed to pay tribute to the school’s role in nurturing young dancers.” Dance Australia

“Butterfly is a clear sign that the Australian and international ballet scene can and will thrive for generations to come.” Limelight Magazine

The Australian Ballet School, the national centre for elite ballet, presents its much-loved end of year performance with over 100 of their full-time artists in training taking to stage for Summer Season with Butterfly at Arts Centre Melbourne on 9 and 10 December 2022.

The dynamic ability and grace of the students will be showcased as they perform a program of classical and contemporary works created by Australian choreographers Lucas Jervies, Simon Dow, Stephen Baynes and Paul Knobloch.

At the heart of the program is the magical title work Butterfly, which recently toured to Sydney receiving critical praise.  Choreographed by former graduate Lucas Jervies, this modern fairy tale told through movement, beautifully blends themes of realism and magic with classic and contemporary techniques.

The extraordinary artistry of the cast of 60 pre-professional dancers, transports audiences to a magical world through transformative sets and costumes by revered designer Hugh Colman.

“Reflection and journey are the heart of Butterfly. It’s an honour to work on this production with young emerging artists who are now in the position I was in 24 years ago at The Australian Ballet School. For me, the metaphor of the butterfly – to transform – is infinite. It’s a constantly evolving process. This production itself has evolved, with a new cast of dancers stepping into the roles this year, and making them new,” said Choreographer, Lucas Jervies.

Set to the joyous score ‘Le Papillon’ (The Butterfly) by Jacques Offenbach, Butterfly is a tale of a young boy who vies for the attention of the smartest girl in school. On an excursion to the butterfly enclosure at the Zoo, they immerse themselves in the kingdom of butterflies, momentarily forgetting the world outside and embarking on a magical journey.

In his other work on the program, π, students use their entire bodies as instruments of dance, percussion and vocalisation.  This exhilarating contemporary work was created by choreographer Lucas Jervies in conjunction with musician of The Australian Ballet School Oliver Northam.

Paul Knobloch has also choreographed two dance works for the program including The Jewellery Box, a charming classical ballet featuring symmetry, beauty and some challenging choreographic moments that showcase the Level 5 students’ skilful abilities. His other work is a dynamic movement dialogue with Level 7 students expressing thoughts, feelings, ideas without words and that moment in time when our thoughts become memories, In Memory of The Moment.

Wolfgang Dance, choreographed by Simon Dow and set to music from Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, is a joyous and cheeky performance from Level 4 and 5 students with the young dancers in 18th century-style white wigs and attire.

Dow is set to retire from The Australian Ballet School at the end of the year, having fulfilled a spectacular 10-year tenure.  The widely admired dancer, choreographer and educator graduated from The Australian Ballet School before going on to dance with the Stuttgart Ballet and become Principal Dancer with The Australian Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Boston Ballet and an international guest artist. Dow also held leadership positions as Artistic Director of Milwaukee Ballet and West Australian Ballet, and was Associate Artistic Director for Washington Ballet, during his remarkable career.

Set to a stunning musical mix of Argentinian composers, El Tango choreographed by Stephen Baynes is performed by Level 8 students – their final performance before they graduate.  A social gathering around tables and chairs providing the setting for this evocative performance piece.

Lisa Pavane, Director of The Australian Ballet School says, “These performances are the culmination of a very full and rewarding year for The Australian Ballet School. The mixed program is designed to delight audiences, and provide all of our young talent with the opportunity to shine. Our beautiful Butterfly is a fitting finale to 2022; the butterfly is the perfect metaphor to be explored and performed by our transforming young artists-in-training.”

The Bad Seeds and The Presets welcomed into the Australian Music Vault

by the partae August 9, 2022
written by the partae
Visitors to the Australian Music Vault (AMV) have the opportunity to explore electronic music in Australia through a dedicated display curated in collaboration with Mess Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) until March 2023. The display features machines used by music makers The Bad Seeds, The Presets and B(if)tek.

Electronic music in Australia has a long history with this display focusing on two main themes: made in Australia and used in Australia.

“In the made in section we feature the Optronics workstation (featuring the incredibly rare VCS-1 made in the UK), the Transaudio synths built here in Melbourne ca. 1975, the ETI 4600 and the Fairlight paraphernalia. In the used in section we have a sampler used by The Bad Seeds, a Korg MS-10 used by The Presets, a B(if)tek drum machine and a musical toy synth that featured in the work of the duo Plastic Platypus at the Clifton Hill Community Arts Centre concert series in the late 1970s,” said MESS co-founder Robin Fox.

The display at the AMV brings together a variety of electronic genres and technical innovations which recognise that the electronic music making community in Australia has been not only vibrant and strong, but also exists at the very forefront of the industry.

Interestingly, the Fairlight CMI Synthesiser, which is an Australian invention, became an international sensation used by the likes of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel and Stevie Wonder.

“Music has and always will underpin revelry and electronic music is no exception. But there is more to the story. The history of electronic sound and music is also the history of innovation and extraordinary creation,” said Fox.

From the early experiments of Percy Grainger, through the radical works of composers like Keith Humble, Ros Bandt and Cindy John to the more recent work of musicians such as Gotye, Severed Heads, Alison Wonderland, Kardajala Kirridarra and The Presets, electronic instruments have provided musicians with the means to work beyond the boundaries of traditional music making.

“Electronic music is often unfairly dismissed simply as a vehicle for drug fuelled hedonism. At MESS, we work to educate people about just how much more there is to it. Sculpting sound with voltage is a beautiful artistic alchemy. When you shape voltage into audible information you are literally massaging one of the fundamental forces of the universe and using that information to communicate feelings and ideas that are virtually impossible to express in words,” said Fox.

MESS is a unique not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the creation of electronic sound and music in all its forms. At the heart of MESS is a significant collection of over 500 rare electronic sound and musical machines. MESS is dedicated to the preservation and accessibility of these machines with the collection used both to highlight and preserve the history of electronic music, and to support the creation of electronic sound and music in all its forms in a welcoming and accessible space. Bookings to use the collection can be made via the MESS website.

As a living collection, all the instruments at MESS are available for everybody and anybody to play at their publicly accessible studio in North Melbourne. They are also used in live performances by members, resident artists and by the MESS Synthesiser Orchestra.

The MESS collection holds instruments from many important moments in the history of electronic sound. This includes the invention of the internationally significant Fairlight Computer Musical Instrument, the ground-breaking curriculum of Melbourne’s La Trobe University Music Department, and the creative output of the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre.

The MESS display will be at the Australian Music Vault until March 2023. Entry is FREE.

Fashion And Beauty: How To Make Your Formal Outfit Stand Out

by the partae July 19, 2022
written by the partae

Formal outfits are great for making any event stand out. They can be so elegant, but sometimes they also can come across as boring and way too expected. But there’s no need to stay in the same old suit or dress that everyone is wearing, here are some ways you could make your formal outfit stand out!

The First ‘Pop’ Of Color

First and foremost, you can choose to wear a more unique shirt or some other part of your outfit. You’ll need to make sure that it fits with the rest of your outfit though. Perhaps, for example, if you’re into wearing long sleeve cocktail dresses you might consider adding a beautiful necklace as an accent piece! Scarves can go great with suits and they’re always an eye-catcher. If you want something even simpler just add a pop of color into this area rather than going full-on monochrome. Why not wear a colorful tie, or simply choose some socks in another shade? It’ll really help light up the room.

Think about what color you choose for your formal outfit. If you aren’t bold enough to wear something super bright, stick with darker colors like black or navy blue. No matter how plain it may seem now, with the right accessories and a confident stride you’ll be turning heads! Wearing a color that no one else is wearing will make all the difference in growing your confidence and making everything about the event stand out! For example, don’t go in a regular, dark suit. Instead, try going with a dark gray three-piece suit! For an extra touch, add some gold buttons to your blazer. Or if that’s too much, then try adding just one or two small ones to accent the jacket.

Accessorize To Stand Out

This can be trickier than it seems, but accessories make all the difference! Just adding a scarf to your outfit instantly makes whatever you are wearing stand out since no one else is going to have one! But if scarves aren’t your thing, and you want to impress your friends, then try adding some statement jewelry or even glasses instead. You could also throw on an extra accessory that isn’t too flashy, just to tie everything together nicely. Just don’t go overboard with accessories, pick just one or two at most. For example, you can wear a brown belt with matching brown shoes and attach a gold money clip right near the loops for your pants so you know exactly how much money you have on you at all times without the need to dig through your wallet.

Know What You Are Wearing Before You Leave The House

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised by how many people don’t take the time to read everything on their outfit before they leave the house! If you’re going somewhere special and want to make sure that you stand out as much as possible, then it’s imperative that you look over every piece of clothing and accessory. Make sure nothing is wrinkled or doesn’t match up with something else. This way there won’t be any confusion about what you are wearing and you will look perfect for whatever formal event is taking place! For example, don’t wear your shiny dress with a casual suit jacket, it’s pretty obvious and it looks like you don’t know what you’re doing. Instead, wear a nice blazer over your dress and make sure there aren’t any buttons missing or loose threads hanging around either.

Choose A Formal Outfit That Makes You Feel Comfortable And Confident!

Always choose an outfit that makes you feel confident. If you don’t feel good in what you’re wearing then no one else will either because people will be able to sense your discomfort from a mile away. Also, when in doubt, just go with the safe bet of slacks and a nice button-down shirt, it never fails! Even if everyone is wearing suits, yours will not look exactly the same as theirs since it won’t have the same jacket or the same color pants, but that’s okay! It will still look great and you’ll feel confident. For example, don’t wear a dress with sneakers, even if others are wearing them too. Your outfit may be on-trend but no one will take you seriously when they see you awkwardly trying to walk around in heels while carrying your umbrella! Slip-on some flats if it isn’t raining out, or better yet…just skip umbrellas altogether if there’s no chance of raining.

New Hair Style

If you were planning to go for that classic barbershop shave or just a regular little trim, then why not opt for something different? Going for the classic ‘short back and sides’ always looks nice, but this time try going with some more messy textures. Or perhaps consider shaving off your sideburns completely, it’ll definitely be something different! If you usually keep your hair relatively plain one way to make an outfit stand out is to get yourself some dye, there are so many fun colors available these days. It’s also worth checking out which of your friends might have similar haircuts if you’re looking for inspiration on how they’ve done theirs!

The All-Important Shoes

One of the most noticeable features of any formal outfit is the shoes. And if you’re planning on standing out then why not try and find some statement shoes? Cowboy boots and brightly colored slip-on shoes can be great, but they should only really be used as special occasion shoes. If you want to wear them regularly we’d recommend choosing something more versatile, perhaps a nice pair of white canvas sneakers or loafers. Contrasting textures like suede and leather can also look great, but it’s best to keep things relatively plain! If you want something even more eye-catching then perhaps you could find yourself some over-the-knee boots, which would definitely look nice with a dress or skirt!

Think Outside The Box

Everyone loves that classic tuxedo jacket, but today there are so many ways to wear it that no other piece of clothing can claim! If black is too predictable for your tastes then try going for either a different color or pattern. Perhaps opt for a dark navy blue if you’re looking for something more casual and relaxed, or go all out and try wearing one with a bright floral print. The same principles apply to anything from blazers to military jackets as well, it’s all about getting creative and thinking outside the box! All it takes is a few little changes to completely change the look of any piece of clothing.

The most important thing to remember when creating a formal outfit is that it’s all about standing out, but not in an obnoxious way. We’ve provided you with some helpful tips for your next event or outing so that you can look and feel confident without being too over the top. Remember, if at first glance someone sees a suit jacket button on both sides of your neckline then they’ll know what kind of person you are! So be sure to have fun with your outfits while still remaining professional, there really isn’t anything more elegant than knowing how to walk the line between those two extremes.

7 Meaningful Gift Ideas To Surprise Your Loved One With

by the partae July 19, 2022
written by the partae

Purchasing the perfect gift for your loved ones can be an overwhelming task. You might think that it is nothing but a simple task, but there are several aspects to take into consideration when making this selection. When you start thinking about it carefully, you will realize how complicated the process of buying gifts can become! Fortunately for you, we have decided to list the most common situations in which you might find yourself and some great gift ideas for each one.

Customized Rings

The perfect ring is the one that has been created specifically for that special someone. Therefore, your first thought should be to get a customized creation. If you manage to do this before popping the question, there will be no doubt in her mind about which band she will wear on her finger forever! The great news is that with today’s technology and advanced techniques, almost any design can become reality. For instance, if her favorite colors are dark green and pink; it is possible to come up with an innovative blend of precious stones and metals where both colors stand out, but they also complement each other perfectly. This kind of symbolic gesture made by you will definitely leave a lasting and at the same time prove how much you care about your lover. There are many sites on the internet that can provide a ring engraving service after you place your order. This kind of gift will be appreciated by both men and women who are looking for something unique and special. You could also consider giving her a ring with the birthstones of all those whom she cares about as much as she does for you. This way, you will convey your feelings to everyone that is important to her and celebrate all their lives!

Pocket Watch

If your loved one has a thing for the old days, you can surprise him/her with a pocket watch. This type of timepiece is classy, stylish, and it will make them feel like they have traveled back in time! There are numerous available options to choose from, including vintage designs as well as those which put a modern twist on an old favorite. However, do not think that this type of watch only looks good when not being used; there are those that provide hands-free viewing, hence doubling up as a necklace or simply by attaching it to your belt. Thus, you should pay attention to the specific features before making any final decisions. Furthermore, just because they look beautiful doesn’t mean that they don’t come with great accuracy when it comes to keeping time. So, do not hesitate to surprise your loved one with this special gift!

Anniversary Gifts

If the special occasion is the wedding anniversary, a romantic gesture would be to give something out of your shared past. For instance, if your partner spent his childhood years in a city that is far from where you live now, you can purchase a ticket for two and go there on a trip. You can even rent the same hotel room that he used to stay at, which will bring back some familiar memories and take your romantic life to an even more intimate level. If it is your first anniversary and your budget is slightly tight, we suggest giving flowers or a couple of personal mementos from your wedding. No matter how little you spend, however, making this decision will be a meaningful gesture that your partner will appreciate. The best gift idea for a birthday is something personal and of great sentimental value to the person that you love most. You can opt for something like tickets or passes to a place that is dear to them and share some very special moments together.

Spa Date & Flowers

The perfect getaway idea is a spa day date. You get to relax and rejuvenate while enjoying some time alone with your lover. Watching her take a bath, giving her a message, and simply being together in such an environment will bring you closer in many ways. If the weather permits, you can even take this outing to the pool in order to double up on all of the benefits that this activity entails! If you cannot afford to spend a lot of money on one single gift, why not opt for something that you can give in installments? For instance, if your partner loves flowers but would never be able to cultivate them herself because she does not have much free time; what about planting two rose bushes that will always remind both of you of your love? Furthermore, you can also get her a rose-themed jewelry box that will help her keep all of the gifts in one place and make it easy for you to surprise her with another bouquet on every special occasion.

A Beauty Basket

A beauty basket filled with body oils, bath salts, and flower petals is another wonderful option to consider. Think about all of the things that make your lover tick and include them all in this gift basket! The best part about these creative presents is that they do not have a specific meaning or purpose attached to them. Anyone who receives such a gift will know just how much thought was put into choosing it, which more than makes up for its lack of meaning!

Everybody Loves Jewelry

Jewelry is often the go-to gift idea when it comes to surprising your loved ones with presents. It is not only classic, but it also has a sentimental value that cannot be easily replaced by some other gift item. The first thing you have to consider when buying jewelry as a surprise gift for someone is the person’s preferences. Is he or she more of a silver fan, or are they more into gold? What kind of jewelry are they usually attracted to? Diamonds, pearls, or maybe jade? Even if you know the answer to these questions, always have a backup plan in case you are proven wrong. If your partner’s tastes change over time, chances are that he or she will appreciate being pleasantly surprised with something completely different than what they used to wear. You can opt for bracelets, necklaces, or even earrings if your budget is very limited.

If you have been wondering what present idea would be best for your loved one, surprise them with something from their past. Something that brings back memories from when they were children could be an excellent idea for a meaningful gift without costing much. If there is a specific activity that the two of you have always dreamed about doing but never managed to find an opportunity, this would be a perfect gift. This way you will create a memory together and share a wonderful experience that she can treasure forever. If none of these appeals to you, something as simple as the gift of your time would not go unnoticed by your partner!

Looking for a Luxury Watch? Here are the Brands to Check Out

by the partae June 25, 2022
written by the partae

Are you looking to spoil yourself after working hard for the last couple of months? Do you have a watch collection that you are looking to grow? If you answer yes to both questions, then it might be time to check out some luxury watches to add to your arsenal.

A lot of people think that watches that cost thousands of dollars are excessive. However, considering the mastery of work and effort that’s put into making these masterpieces, it’s safe to say that their price tag is well worth it. For any watch lover, that’s more than enough reason to invest in these amazing timepieces.

When it comes to luxury watches, you shouldn’t just look at the price tag of the watch. You should also look at the makers or the brand of the watch as well. A popular brand guarantees that you are getting the most out of your hard-earned money. Here are the most popular brands of luxury watches that you must check out.

Rolex

Rolex watches are considered as the Rolls-Royce of the watch industry. The brand is known for producing some of the most expensive watches in the world. They also frequently release unique and one-of-a-kind watches in limited numbers which result in prices as you’ve never seen before.

There’s a lot of history behind Rolex. For one, they were the first watchmakers to patent a waterproof watch – the now-famous Oyster model. They also made the first self-winding watch to the market as well. For film buffs, Rolex watches are the watch of choice of Agent 007, James Bond.

Rolex watches are pricey and are at the top of the chain for a reason. The brand prides itself on its dedication to quality in an industry where new models are released regularly.  Rolex watches are also good to add to your collection because they increase in value over time. Of course, we doubt you’d want to sell one of their watches if you’re truly a collector.

Omega

As a brand with a history of over 170 years, you shouldn’t be surprised at how well Omega makes its watches. The brand’s watches has been to the North Pole, it has been brought to the very depths of earth, and even into space! That’s very surprising especially when you consider the fact that the brand was founded in a Swiss village back in 1848.

Omega is mostly known for the durability of their watches, hence it’s capable of withstanding various conditions. As one of the top luxury watch brands out there, Omega also puts a lot of heart and thought into making sure that each watch’s design is memorable.

Patek Philippe

Switzerland is certainly a nation where most of the best watchmakers are from. One of the brands that represent the country is Patek Philippe. Since being founded in 1839, this watch brand has been synonymous with luxury watches that are made with care and precision piece by piece.

Patek Philippe has an unparalleled approach to design in the sense that each detail is unique and a true representation of what the brand is. Many would consider Patek Philippe as the brand that is always in top contention with the likes of Rolex and it’s easy to see why.

Although the brand has been known for its traditional and timeless take on watches, Patek Philippe is not one to lag behind in terms of technology and advancements in watch design. Still, the makers of Patek Philippe watches guarantee that each peach is handmade with love and master craftsmanship.

Tag Heuer

Tag Heuer is a Swiss brand that was launched in 1860 by Edouard Heuer. It’s one of the most popular brands in the world but surprisingly, not a lot of people know the basics like what the word TAG stands for. It stands for “Techniques d’Avant Garde” which translates to avant-garde techniques – a testament to the handiwork put into making each watch.

The brand is known for its distinct design which makes it look a bit sporty even for a luxury brand. The best Tag Heuer watches look sleek, stylish, and very professional. Tag Heuer is an innovator in terms of style and function. Their watches are truly world-class and it deserves a spot in your collection.

Audemars Piguet

Another luxury brand to come out of Switzerland is Audemars Piguet. The brand is most well-known for catering to top celebs like Arnold Schwarzenegger, James LeBron, and many others by giving them truly one-of-a-kind watches. However, even their standard watches in circulation are already worth drooling for.

One of the most popular creations of Audemars Piguet is the Royal Oak model which was first introduced in 1972. It is the first stainless steel sports watch that was marketed as a luxury style piece. The watch itself combined both style, luxury, and durability which was a first during the 1970s.

To this day, Audemars Piguet continues to create timepieces that look sporty and luxurious at the same time. There’s certainly a market for such watches which is why Audemars Piguet continues to become one of the sought-after luxury brands in the watch industry.

A. Lange and Söhne

Lange and Söhne is a luxury brand from Germany. This watchmaker prides itself on its commitment to consistently delivering the best that the watch industry has to offer. It does so by making sure that each step in the making of their watches is done with precision and care.

The brand was founded in 1845. However, the company was put behind the curtains dring the first World War. The brand returned in 1990 after the reunification of Germany.  With such a unique history, it’s amazing to see A. Lange and Söhne keep up with the competition quickly despite being one of the brands that technically emerged just recently.

These are just some of the top luxury watch brands in the world. If you have the budget spend and the collection to expand, then you might want to consider grabbing some watches from these top companies. You’ll be surprised at how beautiful and durable their offerings are.

by the partae June 23, 2022
written by the partae
NAIDOC Week 3 – 10 July
Arts Centre Melbourne will celebrate the storied culture, country and resilience of First Nations artists and communities in an exciting NAIDOC Week program from 3 – 10 July. Central to this offering is the 2022 NAIDOC theme, GET UP, STAND UP, SHOW UP!, a powerful statement to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as they declare their proud history of getting up, standing up, and showing up each and every day.
Kicking things off on Sunday 3 July will be a NAIDOC Week: Sunday Market from 10am – 4pm featuring First Nations businesses Clothing The Gaps, Haus of Dizzy, The Koori Circle and many others. Clothing The Gaps have also been given creative freedom to decorate our buildings with powerful imagery and will have eight posters across the Hamer Hall and St Kilda Rd backlits.
Throughout the market day, there will also be a series of FREE, family-friendly workshops in the Hamer Hall Foyer. Mob can join in a bushtukka and feather flower-making workshop with artist Cassie Leatham in collaboration with Craft Victoria or design their own tram art with Jarra Karalinar Steel. For those more musically inclined, there will be hip hop dance workshops with Indigenous Outreach Projects and a songwriting workshop with storyteller, composer, director, producer, musician and soundscape designer Allara. Participants will need to pre-register their interest for each of the workshops.
To round out the opening day of NAIDOC Week, viewers can catch a stream of legendary singer-songwriter Uncle Kutcha Edward’s album launch for his latest release Circling Time. This is Uncle Kutcha’s fifth studio album and was filmed at the invitation only launch in May 2022. The stream will be available from Arts Centre Melbourne’s content hub, Together With You.
Bri Pengarte Apma Hayes’ winning Vic NAIDOC poster design will take pride of place up on Arts Centre Melbourne’s super banner until the end of NAIDOC Week. Each year, Vic NAIDOC run a poster design competition to find an artist who captures the essence of the year’s theme. Hayes, a 19-year-old emerging Arrernte artist born and raised in Geelong on Waddawurrung country, shares her love and passion for culture through her art by telling stories and showing connections in her works.
From a young age, she watched her father Joel Penagnke Apma Hayes, a renowned Aboriginal artist, and started her own painting journey at the age of 16. Hayes incorporates many different aspects into her paintings using dots and symbols alongside lots of blues and earthy tones.
To accompany this powerful image, First Nations photographers Jacinta Keefe and Tiffany Garvie will also have a selection of their photography on display across the façade of Arts Centre Melbourne.
“My images of Mandy Nicholson and Barkaa show two women of different generations and different approaches to activism in contemporary Australia. Both have the shared experience of living as First Nations women in this country and are powerful, consistent and authentic in the way they use their voices,” said Garvie.
“I chose Archie because he stood up for mob and fought endlessly to get where we are now. I also chose the footy oval where the TREATY For Victoria concert was held because despite the rain and scary as thunderstorm, the show still went on and we all showed up – for mob and treaty,” said Keefe.
Throughout the month of July, the digital projection about the Spirit Eel, Ancestral Memory – created by First Nations interdisciplinary artist Maree Clarke (Mutti Mutti/Yorta Yorta/BoonWurrung/Wamba Wamba) and emerging artist Mitch Mahoney (BoonWurrung/Barkinji) – will weave its way across the façade of Hamer Hall.
For Ancestral Memory, Clarke collaborates with her nephew to tell the mysterious journey of the short-finned eel of the Birrarung and Maribyrnong River systems as it crosses land, river and sea, taking on many forms on its path to maturity. For the peoples of the Kulin Nation the eel is a protector spirit, food source, seasonal marker and timekeeper.
The metaphor of the Spirit Eel connects time and place, a story of resilience and adaptation that has been pushed below the surface but never lost. This work provides First Nations communities with a new connection to the Hamer Hall site honouring their custodianship of the land and gives greater visibility to their cultural heritage.
Other events taking place during NAIDOC Week at Arts Centre Melbourne include MSO + Electric Fields (7 July), MSO + Spinifex Gum (9 July) and Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up & Shake a leg (10 July) a Songlines concert in the Fairfax Studio featuring some of Victoria’s best pop acts and legends including Alice Skye, Aunty Zeta, Bart Willoughby, Dave Arden, Soju Gang, Yung Warriors and the Get Up, Stand Up, Sing it Up Choir.

NGV ANNOUNCEMENT: Top Arts 2022 now open at NGV Australia

by the partae April 7, 2022
written by the partae

Identity, the natural world and the issues of today are explored by forty of Victoria’s most exciting emerging artists in this year’s Top Arts showcase. On display at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, the exhibition will present forty-seven works drawn from over 1,350 applications, in a range of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital and mixed media.

Now in its 28th year, this year’s Top Arts exhibition highlights the resilience and creativity of young artists who completed their VCE studies during a global pandemic. Inspired by complex themes including isolation, societal pressures, injustice, time, home and the environment, the works on display offer an insight into the personal experiences of these young artists and the issues important to them.

Highlights from the exhibition include Arthur Foulkes’ painting A Party in the Closet depicting male figures dressed in feminine clothing emerging from a wooden closet, challenging gender stereotypes that restrain men from diverse expressions of self. Further exploring themes of identity and belonging, Amy Pham’s painting The Weight of Your World shows a plethora of hands surrounding her self-portrait, serving as a metaphor of the opinions of others that dictate how we act and live.

Daniel Ireland’s Breeze is a performance piece in which the artist, wearing a coat of blue and green tassels, dances in a contemporary and interpretive style to explore the beauty of freedom of nature and the threat humans pose to the environment. For Annie Zhang, immersing in the beauty of the Australian landscape provided deep inspiration for her oil painting Pastoral Xanadu: Outback Autumn which she painted based on a photo from a family trip. Similarly, Zara Blake used nature to assist in the creation of her series, capturing the image of feathers and horsehair on the surface of her clay forms in her work titled Ranges Close By.

Top Arts 2022 highlights the NGV’s strong commitment to arts education, as well as its role as a platform for emerging Victorian artists to express their diverse ideas, attitudes and beliefs. Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV said ‘In its 28th year, we are proud to shine a spotlight on the artists of tomorrow through the annual Top Arts exhibition. These young people are creative, resilient, and offer thoughtful and surprising reflections on themes that are both challenging and optimistic. This year’s Top Arts showcase will inspire other young people to use art and design to understand the world around them.’

Top Arts 2022 will be on display from 17 March – 24 July 2022 at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Federation Square, Flinders St &, Russell St, Melbourne. Free entry. Further information is available via the NGV website: https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/top-arts-2022/
