Vlade Kay

written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

It’s hard to name one place, now I’m focusing on writing new music and recording it, that’s why  we travel a lot with my team to work with different songwriters, producers and meet people from  industry all around the world. For example we had writing camps in LA, Dubai, London, south of  France and by the way, I’d love to be in LA now. For sure we will go there soon.

How did you first start playing music?

Music has always been a major part of my life. Mostly because I come from a musical family, my  father is a drummer and my mother is a singer, so I spent my childhood on the backstage and  from a young age I was singing and playing piano and flute. Also back then, every week we were  making small concerts at our place for all the neighbors. It was a great time!

What’s been happening recently?

Recently I’ve been recording a lot and preparing new materials, we finally finished the EP, so I will  release it very soon, right after ‘Dynamite’. For me it was really important to choose right songs  and get all details close to perfect.

Your new single ‘Dynamite’ is out on August 5, what influenced the sound and songwriting?  The lyrics are based on my own experience.

It’s about feelings that burst out and cannot be controlled. I’m sure that everyone can relate to it. So I just wanted to share my feelings with people.

How did you go about writing Dynamite?

Honestly, it was a team work, definitely magic happened!

We were in studio for a couple of days songwriting. Dynamite was written 2 years ago, that time  we tried to find the right sound, but I didn’t feel that version should be released as it was.

And recently we got back to the song again and finally made it the way you hear it now. We caught the right moment, my team was inspired by the song again, the melody got stuck in  my head for days so I realized, it’s a time to drop it..

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?  I’ve been working with the same crew for the last 4 years, we kinda feel each other so it’s  definitely a match. I see how they also get inspiration from what we do together, and they believe  in me, it’s very important feeling.

How did you approach the production process?

We changed the song few times and then realized that it would be cool to make a rock ballade  format. We got inspired by greatest rock bands and decided to use Lenny Kravitz guitar style

As a rising artist you’ve already collaborated with DJ Snake and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike,  how was each experience and who would you like to collaborate with in the future?  I still can’t believe that we did it together, it is a big-big honor for me!

They are huge professionals with strong teams in all aspects from music to management You need to learn from the best, right?

Soon I will drop a new collaboration with another big name, for now I keep it a secret! The song is massive, I’m sure people will love it.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I listen to different music, lately I have a lot of pop rock songs in my playlist, like Maneskin, Harry  styles.

Can’t wait to hear some new names in the same style! I love it!

What do you like to do away from music?

For efficiency, in every sphere it’s important for me to switch activities.

Currently I focus on improving my music performance.

Everyday I have dancing classes, vocals, studio, rehearsals etc.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

I will release my first EP and few music videos soon.

Planning another album, preparing new shows – can’t wait to perform on stage again!

The Bad Seeds and The Presets welcomed into the Australian Music Vault

by the partae August 9, 2022
written by the partae
Visitors to the Australian Music Vault (AMV) have the opportunity to explore electronic music in Australia through a dedicated display curated in collaboration with Mess Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) until March 2023. The display features machines used by music makers The Bad Seeds, The Presets and B(if)tek.

Electronic music in Australia has a long history with this display focusing on two main themes: made in Australia and used in Australia.

“In the made in section we feature the Optronics workstation (featuring the incredibly rare VCS-1 made in the UK), the Transaudio synths built here in Melbourne ca. 1975, the ETI 4600 and the Fairlight paraphernalia. In the used in section we have a sampler used by The Bad Seeds, a Korg MS-10 used by The Presets, a B(if)tek drum machine and a musical toy synth that featured in the work of the duo Plastic Platypus at the Clifton Hill Community Arts Centre concert series in the late 1970s,” said MESS co-founder Robin Fox.

The display at the AMV brings together a variety of electronic genres and technical innovations which recognise that the electronic music making community in Australia has been not only vibrant and strong, but also exists at the very forefront of the industry.

Interestingly, the Fairlight CMI Synthesiser, which is an Australian invention, became an international sensation used by the likes of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel and Stevie Wonder.

“Music has and always will underpin revelry and electronic music is no exception. But there is more to the story. The history of electronic sound and music is also the history of innovation and extraordinary creation,” said Fox.

From the early experiments of Percy Grainger, through the radical works of composers like Keith Humble, Ros Bandt and Cindy John to the more recent work of musicians such as Gotye, Severed Heads, Alison Wonderland, Kardajala Kirridarra and The Presets, electronic instruments have provided musicians with the means to work beyond the boundaries of traditional music making.

“Electronic music is often unfairly dismissed simply as a vehicle for drug fuelled hedonism. At MESS, we work to educate people about just how much more there is to it. Sculpting sound with voltage is a beautiful artistic alchemy. When you shape voltage into audible information you are literally massaging one of the fundamental forces of the universe and using that information to communicate feelings and ideas that are virtually impossible to express in words,” said Fox.

MESS is a unique not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the creation of electronic sound and music in all its forms. At the heart of MESS is a significant collection of over 500 rare electronic sound and musical machines. MESS is dedicated to the preservation and accessibility of these machines with the collection used both to highlight and preserve the history of electronic music, and to support the creation of electronic sound and music in all its forms in a welcoming and accessible space. Bookings to use the collection can be made via the MESS website.

As a living collection, all the instruments at MESS are available for everybody and anybody to play at their publicly accessible studio in North Melbourne. They are also used in live performances by members, resident artists and by the MESS Synthesiser Orchestra.

The MESS collection holds instruments from many important moments in the history of electronic sound. This includes the invention of the internationally significant Fairlight Computer Musical Instrument, the ground-breaking curriculum of Melbourne’s La Trobe University Music Department, and the creative output of the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre.

The MESS display will be at the Australian Music Vault until March 2023. Entry is FREE.

Thousand Fingers

by the partae August 9, 2022
written by the partae

Welcome to The Partae! How is everything in your world after the pandemic?

Everything is going much better than I planned, actually. My brands are growing fast and getting great feedback from the scene.

Why did you start Follow The Fingers records? What was the inspiration? What was the aim?

It became one of my life goals after spending many years in the industry. I wanted to create a record label & recording studio joint brand where like-minded artists can freely express themselves.

How important is artwork and format do you think in 2022?

At the end of the day, you are selling music, but the image is important too. It should definitely reflect the total concept of the release and also link to the format of the record label. In Follow The Fingers, we work with different designers for the releases. Most recently, we worked with Italian artist Elisa. She explains of her art that the images were originally an experiment. “I wanted to explore the relationship between music and abstract visuals, and I wanted to investigate the role of technology in the production of art. I used Frax, an open source app that allows users to create their own fractals, infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. I also wanted to modify my fractals even more, so I manually modified colours, light and movement in each picture. Finally I used Runway ML, a machine learning software that allows creators to explore different uses of Artificial Intelligence. By feeding the archive of images I had from Frax into Runway, I was able to obtain new and totally unique graphics.”

And what about videos and social media? Do they play a role in getting the label out there?

Of course!

What is the signature sound of the label? What defines it musically?

Our sound draws on an image of a post-apocalyptic future, but it’s not a simple replicate of the Mad Max theme. It is more modern and in harmony with machines. It respects every theme and area of post-apocalypiıc life. There’s the post-apocalyptic love story, the post-apocalyptic world of vikings…limited by imagination only.

Tell us about the new VA. How did you select the artists for this?

A few of the artists have releases on Follow The Fingers already. However, I am always finding new artists on the internet and reaching out. They are people who I’ve come across on music streaming or download platforms.

How has the label evolved since you first started it?

The label is constantly growing its roster and getting more recognition with each release. When it comes to the releases, originality is giving us a big distinction from other labels. Every release gets a new blog feature, premiere, radio play or gesture of support from top artists.

How do you manage that while staying true to the original and core sound?

You just work with the right artists at the right time. The industry evolves/changes all the time and I should be listening to a lot of music and foresee where the scene is going. That’s how I can pick original creatives on my same wavelength.

What have been the best releases or the ones you’re most proud of so far?

I’m proud of all our releases but my favourite three are Into The Mist EP, Poison Lips EP, and She Said EP.

What else are you doing forward to/have you got coming up?

Oh, we have a lot of exciting sounds coming along! Apart from that, nowadays, I am working on a new compilation of ADE.

Phil Jamieson @ The Curtin Hotel, 4th August 2022

by the partae August 9, 2022
written by the partae

Photography + Words – Darren Chan

Phil Jamieson is the consummate frontman leading his legendary rock band Grinspoon, who  I had the pleasure of seeing headline the Springloaded Festival earlier this year.

Tonight, Phil Jamieson performed as a solo artist performing his debut solo album ‘Somebody Else’.  In a more cozy intimate venue, the Curtin Hotel, Phil and the band came onstage to a rapturous applause and cheering. Along with guitar sideman Davey Lane of You am I (and The Pictures who opened the night), they launched into the guitar heavy track on “Trouble”.

Tonight we got to see and hear Phil’s songwriting and creativity extend to more melodic pop, from the catchy “Kapow”, indie pop “Rebecca”, the western “YCBM”, to the brit-rock album opener “Somebody Else”. Brilliant stuff.

Sheph.ART & Barry Saleh

by the partae August 8, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Hey! Great to be here today, we’re currently based out in Southwest Sydney, Liverpool to be specific!

How did you two come together to create music?

Sheph.ART: We actually met years ago, both on a construction site as electricians! One day, we were working on a large job together when I played some of my own music on the speakers. The conversations that brewed since then have never stopped! We went on to create music together, open our own Music Studio and have lots more in the works.

What’s been happening recently?

Barry Saleh: As we’re both producer and artists, our lives revolve around music 24/7! At this very moment, we are working on some large scale EPs for the artists that work with us as well as planning our next release.

Sheph.ART: I mirror what Barry said! Our publicist always tells us that we need more coverage of us outside our studio, but it’s the music that drives us forward, whether it’s learning, creating or executing on what we’ve set out to do. We have a lot more in works as business owners working in the music industry. Currently, we are also expanding our team of producers, finding more talent to work with and expanding our portfolio of music!

‘Action’ is your debut single together, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Sheph.ART – “Action’ is a reference to the people who have doubted my musical, creative and business abilities, always being nowhere to be found when crunch time was imminent and now would like a seat at the table to bear the fruits of my labor. I specifically made the production as gritty as possible without losing its melodic essence in order to take the listener through an emotional rollercoaster to feel the hunger that I felt going through the motions of being able to get to where I am today and looking to go forward from here.”

Barry Saleh –  “In the opening verse I wrote through the eyes of my brother and the experiences that I witnessed him live through. I paint a picture of unhealthy memories in a reminiscent/braggadocious manner and take listeners all the way through to the present moment of growth and obstacles that are faced when it comes to people doubting and having ill intentions. The first person writing approach we took throughout the track strengthens relatability and understanding as it allows listeners to consume our lyrics as if they are the personas living the narrative or as if we are speaking directly to them in conversation.”

Please describe your collaborative process?

Sheph.ART: As Barry and I work together on a daily basis as producers, we have nailed our collaborative process down to the tee. From a production standpoint, we both have areas of expertise that we like to give to each other, for example, I love laying down the Melodies on keys and Barry is a killer guitarist! We both decide on the vibe of the track and go from there. Action’s instrumental is gritty yet melodic and takes the audience through a journey so for us as musicians, it’s all about what the track needs, we let go of any ego and do what’s right for the record.

Barry Saleh: In regard to the collaborative process for writing, we always go off the feeling of the beat, usually when we start writing together, we always end up writing about the same feeling, but if we don’t whoever nails the hook first, we go off of that as the topic. Sheph and I have had similar yet different experiences in life and so we tackle that topic from a different perspective. I agree with Sheph, when it comes to the record, we are a means of delivering a message, but if the message doesn’t sit right for the record, there are no hard feelings, you scrap it and move on. We’re tough critics of each other and so will challenge each other.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

Sheph.ART – Being artist/producers, Barry and I, produced, tracked and engineered in our own studio BeatsWithSheph. I find that being a producer makes me a better artist and being an artist makes me a better producer all allowing me to have the flexibility to tell many stories in the one record. For example, Being a producer/artist, I used the melodies in the chorus and my verse of “Action”  to tell a story in itself. Although the beat and the main vocals can sound upfront and in your face, the listener has the option to listen a little more in depth and find that there is a flow of movement in the record that showcases the euphoric feeling of success through grit, hunger and hustle.”

How did you approach the recording process?

Sheph.ART – There are a few ways that I like depending on the feeling of the beat, sometimes, I will record melodies first and comp it together and write and record from there. Other times, I have the lyrics written, memorised (always memorised) and then when I record, it’s all about the delivery. This is not just something I hold for myself as an artist, but something I talk about with the artists that I engineer for. Engineering starts during the recording process and focusing on the delivery is everything.

Barry Saleh – Sheph and I take our engineering experience into the studio when we record, whenever we are tracking for each other, we understand even as seasoned recording artists, there are still nerves at the start of any recording process, getting that out of the way is when the recording really starts. From there it’s about finding every take that has been delivered the best. Making sure that our engineering vocalware is catered for the vocals of the artist (even if it’s ourselves), choosing a mic that suits the voice of the artist and the tone of the record.

What do you have planned for Action?

There is so much happening for Action! We have quite a few blogs, radios and endorsements coming our way for this record and the love is appreciated! We aren’t stopping here though, there is going to be another record dropping shortly for you all to bump to and a few other projects in the works! Keep an eye out!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Sheph.ART – I’ve been bumping KAYTRANADA and Anderson.Paak!

Barry Saleh – I love listening to Burna Boy, JID and a range of Arabic music!

Any live shows coming up?

Barry Saleh – “At the moment, there are a few live shows in the works and will be finalised in the coming months! Performing has always been part of my life since a young age and there is no feeling like performing and seeing your fans in the crowd singing the words of your records!”

Sheph.ART – “Touring is definitely on the to do list, but right now, for me, it is more about creating a strong digital presence and growing my skills for when it’s time to perform.”

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

We love this question!

Currently, we have a fair few projects in the works, not just for our artistry, but for business! Keep an eye out for “Sheph Division” “BeatswithSheph” and everything that encompasses it! Our organisation has doubled over the past few months and we don’t plan to stop, so if you’re an artist, producer or engineer who is looking for the next step in there career, we’re on the hunt to find you and help you grow!

For our records, we plan to come out with more records that are just going to blow you away!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Sheph.ART – I’m an avid cook so I love a good home cooked meal, but I like to spice it up so I cook at my BeatswithSheph studio haha!

Barry Saleh – Love me good meal from Classic Burger! Can’t go wrong there! With our busy schedule sometimes ordering Uber Eats is time efficient and having great options open till late in Liverpool is a plus!

KING STINGRAY ANNOUNCE NATIONAL ALBUM TOUR + DROP NEW SINGLE ‘LUPA’ KING STINGRAY’S DEBUT ALBUM IS OUT NOW!

by the partae August 8, 2022
written by the partae

Celebrating the release of their long awaited debut album, King Stingray will rip ’round the country this October, on their largest national tour to date, bringing their good vibes and huge choruses to the masses.

Kicking things off at The Triffid in Brisbane, the band will then make their way south to Sydney’s Manning Bar and Melbourne’s Croxton before rounding things up at The Gov in Adelaide, Fremantle’s Freo.Social, and ending things back in the NT at Darwin Railway Club.

Tickets are on sale Thursday 11 August at 10am AEST, BUT eager fans can get early access to pre-sale tickets from Wednesday August 10 by signing up up here.

The band have also just dropped a video for the album opener, Lupa. Written by lead singer Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu, ‘Lupa’ translates from Yolŋu Matha languages as ‘Poor man, rich life’ and holds a fist in the air for marginalised people around the world.

Yirrŋa, a Gumatj clan songman, says the intention behind the song is “to make people happy and proud”. Lupa is catchy as hell, and somehow immediately relatable, even if it’s sung in a language group spoken by around just 16,000 people in Arnhem Land.

Filmed and directed by long time friend of the band, Sam Brumby, the Lupa video whisks us away to the band’s stunning hometown of Yirrkala to celebrate the lupa way of life – being financially broke but rich in friends, family and culture.

King Stingray’s do-it-yourself ethos and connection to home and family resonates through every song on their debut album, which was finally released on August 5 to critical acclaim.

Surfing an epic wave of live shows through 2022, the band have shared stages with Ball Park Music and Midnight Oil, performed during the AFL’s ‘Dreamtime at The G’ match, delivered a mind-blowing set at Splendour in the Grass, and wowed the nation with their powerful cover of Coldplay classic “Yellow” for triple j’s Like A Version.

With no signs of slowing down, King Sting are ready to electrify venues in all cap cities.

About King Stingray:

King Stingray is a story of lifelong friendship and two cultures coming together. Growing up together in Yirrkala in North-East Arnhem Land, founding members Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (frontman) and Roy Kellaway (guitar) have been playing and making music together for as long as they can remember.

Yirrŋa and Roy formed King Stingray with mates Dimathaya Burarrwanga (rhythm guitar backing vocals and yidaki), Campbell Messer (bass) and Lewis Stiles (drums). The band seamlessly blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create a unique sound of their own: Yolŋu surf-rock.

Propelled by the instant success of their first five radio singles, “Hey Wanhaka”, “Get Me Out”, “Milkumana”, “Camp Dog“and “Let’s Go” the band soared to unexpected heights in the lead up to their debut album King Stingray which was released on August 5, 2022.

Hailed as “one of the most exciting acts in the country today” (NME), the band have taken out triple j’s ‘Unearthed Artist of the Year‘ J Award for 2021, as well as NME Australia’s ‘Best New Act From Australia‘ Award and Rolling Stone Australia’s ‘Best New Artist‘ 2022.

NATIONAL INDIGENOUS MUSIC AWARDS 2022 National Indigenous Music Awards Winners

by the partae August 7, 2022
written by the partae
Under the Larrakia stars, the country’s finest artists were celebrated in a ceremony hosted by writer, actor and comedian, Steven Oliver. It included amazing performances including a highlight from King Stingray, as well as a touching tribute to the late Uncle Archie Roach and an unforgettable performance by Manuel Dhurrkay and Shellie Morris inducting Gurrumul into the NIMA Hall of Fame.

Steven Oliver, a descendant of the Kukuyalanji, Waanyi, Gangalidda, Woppaburra, Bundjalung and Biripi peoples, was an immaculate host. He kept the crowd enthralled with his quick-wit and charm as the awards flowed to the best of the best on First Nations music.

To celebrate the life of the beloved Uncle Archie Roach, the entire NIMAs cast combined to lead a rendition of Archie’s iconic track “We Won’t Cry”, in front of a teary crowd. The performance will go down as one of the most poignant in NIMA history as they honoured the legacy of a powerhouse musician, storyteller and philanthropist whose imprint has already spanned generations, and will continue to do so.

The night’s big winner was Yolngu man Baker Boy, who took home trophies for the coveted Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for his debut record, Gela.

Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung indie artist Jem Cassar-Daley’s fast rise to success won her New Talent of the Year after the 2021 release of her debut EP, I Don’t Know Who to Call.

Yolngu surf-rock band King Stingray have received the coveted Song of the Year award for their single, ‘Milkumana,’ which signals the kind of success projected for their debut album, released on Friday.

Producing the finest First Nations clips of the year were Barkaa, the Malyangapa and Barkindji woman who was awarded Film Clip of the Year for her banging tune, ‘King Brown,’ and Indigenous Outreach Projects who earned Community Clip of the Year.

The Archie Roach Foundation Award went to Brewarrina on Ngemba rapper, drummer and speaker Dobby.

The NIMAs also celebrated the life and important work of Gurrumul, inducting him into the Hall of Fame as a part of the ceremony. He was tributed with a performance by his brother and Saltwater Band co-founder, Manuel Dhurrkay.

King Stingray treated us to a taste of their new record in an electrifying set. Birdz and Fred Leone teamed up to form a killer Hip-Hop duo, while Emma Donovan and the Putbacks put on a soulful show.

Yirrmal graced the stage with his singing, sharing Yolngu language, and the Red Flag Dancers performed traditional dance.

Noongar artist Bumpy put on a stunning set as the much-deserved winner of this year’s NIMAs triple j Unearthed contest.

NIMAs Creative Director Ben Graetz was proud to be involved in yet another stunning ceremony, saying he’s, “So honoured to be a part of such an incredible night tonight. To be at the Amphitheater with community, celebrating together in person will be something I will remember for a very long time. Also to remember, honour and pay tribute to Dr G and Uncle Archie was a true highlight.”

The evening was brought to your airwaves by NITV, Viceland, triple j and Double J in the first in-person ceremony that the NIMAs have been able to safely hold since 2019.

FRENCH ELECTRONIC TRIO SENSE RELEASES REFLECTIVE & UPBEAT NEW SINGLE ‘CLOUD 9’, ANNOUNCES UPCOMING EP

by the partae August 7, 2022
written by the partae

Last Friday, French trio Sense released their latest electropop single ‘Cloud 9’ and hinted at their upcoming EP to The Partae, expected later this year. The track features UK singer-songwriter, bailey, who brings a simple and confident melody to a powerful atmospheric beat. Sense breaks from their previous chill and lofi beats and dives into a more organic and intimate sound with their latest track. Listen to Cloud 9 on every platform here.

“For us, Cloud 9 marks a new dimension for the band. While separated over the past 2 years, we dreamed of gathering for a few weeks to create something that would be truly us, a mix of all our feelings at this exact moment. We’ve been fascinated by what we call “happysad”, a feeling of nostalgia experienced before a moment is even over. We wanted to convey this into music and used everything we had around us: from cutlery to water bottles and even our voice for the first time.” Sense

Cloud 9 was produced after the band’s reunion in late 2021. Driven by the feeling of living every moment together at its most, the group has produced its most organic EP yet.

DULCIE serve up another dose of insatiable indie pop with ‘COLD HARD TRUTH’ August Australian tour announced!

Dulcie are back with brand new music to bring the band and their growing legion of fans into the second half of 2022! New single ‘Cold Hard Truth’ is a bright step forward for the Perth pop group, whose music has been capturing the attention of audiences around the country throughout the year.

Following on from strong releases in ‘Nothing Left’ and ‘tell ur friends’, the new single from Dulcie continues to spotlight the girls’ sharp ear for tone, harmonies and songwriting skill. Fresh off the back of their sold out regional tour supporting the irrepressible Amy Shark, the arrival of ‘Cold Hard Truth’ serves as the perfect accompaniment to Dulcie’s new tour news: an August run that will bring the group back to the East Coast and home again.

 STREAM

‘Cold Hard Truth’ comes as another collaboration between Dulcie and Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe), while Cam Parkin (Owl Eyes) and Leon Zervos (Troye Sivan, Daniel Johns) handled mixing and final mastering, respectively. The song itself was recorded at Ash Carr-White’s home in Middle Swan, Perth. Of the track, Dulcie explain that ‘Cold Hard Truth’ is focused on exploring feelings of uncertainty and frustration in navigating a potential new relationship.

“‘Cold Hard Truth’ explores the frustration, insecurity and longing that comes from not knowing if someone feels the same way you do. It’s all about that waiting period, where you want them to make a move before you do!

“I originally wrote this song to be much slower and stripped back, but after workshopping it with the band and our producer it’s taken on a more punchy indie pop sound, which I love! We recorded it in my living room with Joel Quatermain and spent most of our time finding the perfect synth layers and midi sounds to bring it to life.”
ASH CARR-WHITE, DULCIE

Dulcie’s return to touring in August comes at a perfect time for the group, having spent recent months travelling throughout Western Australia with Amy Shark, but also reconnecting with home out West after having spent much of 2022 playing on their biggest stages yet supporting Ocean Alley (a tour that sold in excess of 40,000 tickets).

The release of ‘tell ur friends’ and ‘Nothing Left’ fuelled the momentum surrounding Dulcie in the first half of 2022; the girls earning triple j rotation (‘tell ur friends’), strong praise from Australian music media including NME Australia, Music Feeds and AAA Backstage. Developing a strong presence on community radio too, Dulcie have solidified their presence in 2022 as a group to watch thanks to extensive Apple Music and Spotify love, surpassing 35,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone.

PRAISE FOR DULCIE

“With each release, Dulcie’s pop muscle gets stronger and stronger. So does their straight-from-the-heart songwriting that’s been their superpower since the very beginning.”
Triple J Unearthed, Abby Butler (‘Nothing Left’, 2022)

“The new Dulcie era isn’t here to wait for you, it yanks your wrist and takes you for a ride you won’t regret.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne (‘Nothing Left’, 2022)

“I really dug their former organic ensemble sound, but DAMN if they don’t absolutely nail this pop thang!”
Triple J, Al Newstead (‘tell ur friends’, 2022)

“…infectiously sassy, uplifting, and shows perfectly just how the group have evolved these past few years.”
Backseat Mafia (‘tell ur friends’, 2022)

“Leaning into more pop-based sonics, the dynamic track shows a different side to the trio, bringing a simmering confidence and their signature captivating harmonies.”
Milky Milky Milky (‘Nothing Left’, 2022)

Stream ‘Wicked Sunday’

Returning with a shiny new slice of dark-wave psychedelia is Meanjin/Brisbane-based alt-rock group Dream Dali. Their immersive new track ‘Wicked Sunday’ is out on August 5.

Turning heads with their debut EP ‘Life in Legato’ in 2021, and following up with the recent release of the psychedelic and cinematic ‘Rosary’, the group is a trio of experienced musicians who have played for artists such as Vera Blue, Daniel Johns, Kite String Tangle and Miami Horror. As Dream Dali, they have supported the likes of Phoenix, Washed Out and Empire of the Sun, and showcased at BIGSOUND in 2019.

Known for their uniquely artistic live performances, Dream Dali’s music is paired with white lighting, set to a backdrop of visuals from Dada films and black and white surrealist imagery from the 1930s, creating a truly mesmerising musical experience.

This new track further bolsters Dream Dali’s mission to immerse listeners in their conceptual multi-sensory surrealist world of cinematic alt-dance-rock. ‘Wicked Sunday’ is abuzz with crunchy synths, a drama-filled dance-rock drum beat, and satisfying electric guitar atmospheres that are unashamedly 80s. The icing on the top of this cosmic cake is the song’s evocative lyrics, delivered in lead singer Aldous Emerson’s signature dreamy style.

Alluring and hypnotic, this is a superbly catchy tune that will have listeners dancing and shaking it all off. It’s a dance-inducing triumph over heavy feelings and disappointment, as Emerson explains:

“Wicked Sunday is written about those times when you wake to a huge weight of the day. Exploring depression and trying to build yourself back up when you feel people have let you down.”

The band has inspired airplay from the likes of 4ZZZ, The Most (NZ), 2SER and many more as well as scoring features on a multitude of independent playlists including Pilerats, Music Feeds, Tone Deaf, AAA Backstage, Australian Musician, Aus Music Scene and much more.

Let Dream Dali immerse you in their sonic surrealism with ‘Wicked Sunday’, out everywhere from August 5.

Stream ‘Sweet Summer Nights’

Gold Coast (Yugambeh Country) based First Nations acoustic-pop artist Dani Teveluwe (pronounced ‘tee-va-loo’) is whisking us away on a summer breeze with her new song ‘Sweet Summer Nights’, which will be released on August 5 ahead of her debut EP ‘Into The Deep’, due out on September 2.

Already adept at performing to enamoured crowds, the former teacher has graced stages with Jaguar Jonze, Loose Content, Sofia Isella and Local Safari, and has toured for her single ‘Waiting Wasting Time’ with Death by Denim and Old Mervs.

A skillful singer-songwriter brimming with talent, Teveluwe is taking flight with her optimistic, upbeat music, starting with this first release from a stellar debut EP.

Opening with a meandering acoustic guitar melody and Dani’s arresting vocals, this is an instantly uplifting and sweetly soulful tale of a summer romance. The acoustic guitar is elevated by a feel-good beat and shiny layer of electro-pop shimmer, dreamy ‘ooh’s’ and the celestial infusion of the sah u – a coconut Thai violin (played by Peranya Visitchantaragoon). Prettily playing on those summer night feels, ‘Sweet Summer Nights’ carries its intent from lyrics through to instrumentation, transporting listeners to a balmy night, dancing under a moonlit sky, embracing sun-soaked skin and welcoming the delight of a romantic encounter.

A tune that came about effortlessly as an ode to a Lana Del Rey song, Teveluwe explains:

“Sweet Summer Nights was written in ten minutes and is a pure stream of consciousness. At the time I had been playing Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness a lot and had fallen in love with the song all over again. Sitting in the afternoon sunshine, the song came to life effortlessly and soon became one of my favourite tracks (from the EP).”

Teveluwe has made strides to push herself out of her comfort zone and into a life that just felt right for her. It seemed impossible at first, but feeling inspired by a David Bowie quote, with the addition of hard work, and plenty of courage, she’s reaping the rewards, and making fans across the globe, boasting airplay on 4ZZZ locally, being named a local artist to watch by Tone Deaf, and also receiving spins internationally in the US, UK, Namibia, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Romania and Canada.

‘Sweet Summer Nights’ will be warming us up from August 5, with EP ‘Into The Deep’ following on September 2. Catch Dani Teveluwe when she supports Andy Martin at two shows on the Gold Coast (Yugambeh Country), at the Burleigh Bazaar on Saturday 20th August, and again at the Bearded Dragon in Mt Tamborine on Sunday 21st August.

Pissed-Off Punk Is Alive And Well On Biting New Track ‘A Simple Fuck You’ From Nocturnal Animals

Stream ‘A Simple Fuck You’

Scathing punk-rock and tongue-in-cheek sass collide on the new track ‘A Simple Fuck You’ from Adelaide/Tarndanya trio Nocturnal Animals, out on August 5.

Well-versed in producing high energy, angst-driven alt-rock/punk anthems, this is the group’s third new release this year, following the invigorating ‘Where’s My Mind Been?’ and pop-punk dance-worthy belter ‘Dancing In The Blood’. They’ve just shared the stage with The Buoys in support of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets on the local leg of their album tour, have previously supported DZ Deathrays, and have also played to sold-out crowds in their hometown for four of their own headline shows.

Now, they’re hitting where it hurts with post-breakup bitterness, but in a way that just sounds so good, with the punchy ‘A Simple Fuck You’.

This new track wishes a scathing series of ‘bad day’ moments upon its subject, and will definitely raise some eyebrows. We can all agree that losing your headphones genuinely sucks, and would usually be the kind of thing you wouldn’t wish upon anyone – except maybe your ex. Driven by its catchy, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, ‘A Simple Fuck You’ soars with smacking drums, gritty riffs and a headbanging rhythm, all amplified by a couple of sudden pauses that emphasise the energy as the whole band joins in for the powerful final chorus, with a few gutsy screams thrown in for good measure.

Those slap-in-the-face shocks of moments that would ruin your day are just so satisfying to sing along to. As straightforward as its title implies, the band tells us:

“‘A Simple Fuck You’ is a song that keeps it short & sweet, it’s a simple fuck you done with a smile.”

Proving that punk is certainly not dead, Nocturnal Animals previous releases have seen support from Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Hysteria Mag, AAA Backstage, Punktuation Mag, Heavy Mag, The Faction, Aus Music Scene, Scenestr, Moody Music Blog, Eat This Music, Radio Adelaide, 3RRR, idobi Radio, and more.

This Nocturnal Animals belter ‘A Simple Fuck You’ will be stuck in your head from its August 5 release date. The band will be touring with Jurassic (Melbourne) and Deadshowws (Newcastle) celebrate; more information below.
