Drift release new dreamy alt rock single “Begin”

by the partae June 4, 2023
written by the partae

Fresh Wollongong alternative rock outfit Drift release soaring new single Begin just in time for their hometown headline show on June 3.

Swimming in jangly guitar layers and alluring vocal melodies, Begin dives into feelings of heartbreak and the pain of losing someone as an anchor, reflecting on the past and wanting to reclaim the present.

Vocalist Callum McCombie explains, “Begin was written from the depths of that feeling of wanting to hold onto something or someone you love so much that it becomes a detriment. Begin is trying to start again. A new beginning was the end of this period for me, and was a great step towards improving myself and the situation.”

Working with producer and engineer Chris Peruch, Drift fully embrace the sensibility of their shoe gaze and emo influences on Begin, carving out soundscapes that are equal parts powerful and moving for fans of bands like My Bloody Valentine, DIIV and Fiddlehead.

The Begin music video and visual artwork portray the band’s humble beginnings, showcasing a performance aspect where the band are jamming in a homely garage space, juxtaposed against an abstract and chaotic chess match between an angel and the devil. The game ultimately ends in the angels’ favour, depicting the idea that good will prevail. Watch here.

Drift are set to headline a show at Seeker Brewing in Unanderra on June 3 to celebrate the release of their new single, supported by friends in Busted Head Racket and Pictures With Yuki. Tickets are already moving quickly, and are available here. In addition, Drift have also announced they’ll support post-punk band dust on their upcoming et cetera, etc tour in Sydney on June 9, and will have more shows to announce very soon.

Drift is a project that has always set out to create easy listening material with emotional soundscapes. Forming in early 2020, Drift began as the solo shoegaze/emo project for frontman McCombie. Shortly after McCombie started working on music alone, the missing puzzle pieces fell into place when Nelson Thurgate (guitar), Ruben Dragone (drums) and Marley Mondzheyovsky (bass) joined the fold and solidified the outfit as a four-piece.

Drift have since been warmly welcomed into the live music circuit, selling out multiple hometown shows, sharing the stage with fellow Wollongong act TOTTY on a national tour in 2022 as well as showcasing their sound on the Factory Theatre stage at Glider Festival the year before.

The band has been hard at work developing a body of work that will see its release over the course of the year following the positive response from previous single At Last, which saw play on triple j Unearthed, a number of positive Unearthed reviews as well as play on triple j‘s Home and Hosed.

Begin is out today and is streaming everywhere now. Catch it live at Seeker Brewing June 3rd, tickets on sale now.

ELIZA HULL captivates with the release of ‘RUNNING UNDERWATER’ Touring the U.K. in May, Australian shows announced for August/September

by the partae June 4, 2023
written by the partae

Having established herself as one of Australia’s most important voices and striking songwriters of recent years, Melbourne-based artist Eliza Hull has proven the longevity of her art, and continued evolution.

With the release of her new single ‘Running Underwater’, the songwriter and musician embraces a beautiful new chapter of creative and personal expression; the threads of experiences from both sides of her being knitting together beautifully in creating a gorgeous piece of new music.

New music from Eliza Hull comes accompanied by a slew of live shows that will see Hull performing internationally throughout the U.K. in May, before returning home for some unmissable Australian performances in the second half of the year.

‘Running Underwater’ saw Hull work with ARIA Award-winning producer Pip Norman (Baker Boy, Missy Higgins) on production, recording the track at BIGBANG Studio. Mixed by Simon Lam (Woodes, Cub Sport) and mastered by Idania Valencia (Sam Smith), ‘Running Underwater’ – in its final form – lets the dynamism of Hull’s vocals and arrangement take prominence, flourishing with each sonic swell.

The track itself is the first indication of Hull’s current creative rhythm, and a taste of the material to come – her first since the release of her 2018 EP, How We Disappeared. ‘Running Underwater’, which was first performed by Hull during a powerful appearance on the ABC’s Q&A program in 2021, is the first song Hull has written about being disabled and living with a condition called ‘Charcot Marie Tooth’.

The condition, a degenerative nerve disorder, has affected Hull’s walking for a long time; it was a disability that she kept hidden, specifically in the music industry.

In recent years however, Hull has emerged as an accessibility advocate within the industry; her determinism and approach to educating and spurring on change in perspective and structure, when it comes to the way disabled musicians are treated within the industry, has been incredibly influential. ‘Running Underwater’ is a powerful musical representation of Hull’s strength, and an example of the artist coming further into her own.

“For a long time I hid my disability, especially in the music industry. This was due to under-representation of disabled musicians and  I was constantly shown that disability was a deficit or something that should be feared and hidden. It was such a heavy weight holding onto these beliefs, it was exhausting to constantly hide.

This song is about pushing up against society’s view of disability, it’s about letting go of the fear and being authentic and true to myself and showing that it’s ok to be different.“ ELIZA HULL

Single Artwork: Michelle Grace Hunder

Working with director Keiran Watson-Bounce (And Then Something Changed, Caravan), Hull has also produced a moving music video for ‘Running Underwater’, filmed at The Goods Shed in Castlemaine. Featuring the talents of dancer ‘roya the destroya’, the experience allowed Hull to bring the song to life in a beautifully unique way onscreen. And in doing so, has represented disability onscreen in a way not generally seen.

“The music video features my very good friend ‘roya the destroya’. She is a brilliant disabled dancer who moves like nobody I know. She actually started busking with an early version of the song and sent me a video of her performing with it. When I watched that video I knew I had to collaborate with her on the official music video.

She has a beautiful ability to inhibit what I am feeling in my music and then express that through movement. In the music video she is like my alter-ego, almost like the spirit part of what I am feeling in the lyrics. Keiran Watson-Bonnice is the director of the music video. We have worked together in the past on the ABC Kids TV show And Then Something Changed, which I produced and wrote the music for. We shot the clip in one day, in mostly one take in the Goods Shed on a freezing winter’s day. “ ELIZA HULL

The way Eliza Hull can captivate a room has propelled her onto the national radar, with many notable performances at venues and events including the Sydney Opera House, Ability Fest, Forum Theatre, Hamer Hall, NYE On The Hill and more leaving audiences speechless. Hull has made an impact at showcase events including BIGSOUND and SXSW, as well touring with the likes of Ainslie Wills, BATTS, Mia Dyson, SAFIA and more.

Her songwriting talents have led Hull to co-write with artists including Gordi and Odette – collaborations both set to appear on her forthcoming EP, Here They Come (due later this year), while her music has been featured in TV shows including U.S productions Awkward, Teen Wolf, Saving Hope, and in Australia on The Heights and And Then Something Changed.

PRAISE FOR ELIZA HULL

“Eliza Hull creates lush music, where her soaring vocals are still the star.”
Pilerats

“Eliza plays the part of a sea siren luring a ship to wreck. You can have a role too – you’ll be the captain who ends up splayed against the defined emotional rocks of this song.”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“Swoony English vibes. Eliza’s voice cuts through nicely.”
Triple J, Richard Kingsmill

“Her music is calm and ethereal, you are floating in it. All for fans of The xx, dreamy female vocals and progressive music, will surely appreciate her.”
Stereofox

“Enchanting and textured, Eliza’s voice aims straight for the heart in the same way that Lana Del Rey, Angus and Julia Stone, and Florence and the Machine overwhelm us with their beauty.”
The AU Review

Kicking off the ‘Running Underwater’ cycle in the live space, fans will be able to see Eliza Hull performing in Australia this August and September, performing in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

For fans based overseas, Hull will be touring the U.K. in May, supporting Ruth Lyon as well as showcasing at The Great Escape in Brighton.

Super Ghost – Reconnect With ‘Friendless’

‘Don’t Talk About It’ – First play on Triple J Unearthed TOPS
“Haunting…but in the most vibrant way possible!” 4 / 5 (Anika Luna, Triple J Unearthed) [About ‘Don’t Talk About It’

“Don’t Talk About It firmly snapshots Super Ghost’s diverse genre sensibilities, stretching the indie rock trope into slinky and lush territory.”
(Hysteria)
“Built off a foundation of indie rock, the pair of Hudson MacMahon and Alexander Shoesmith aren’t afraid to colour outside the lines, adding elements of ‘crisp indie-pop undertones, surf-rock swells and elements of spaghetti western sauve’ to the mix.”
(Scenestr)“Rising from the Gold Coast, the sound of their dreamy undertone, dissolved by a propelling energy, mediates the lasting impression of Super Ghost.”
(Good Call Live)“Super Ghost have nailed a particular vibe on Waiting List”
(AAA Backstage)

‘Waiting List’ music video showcased at the

Melbourne International Animation Festival 2023

With their signature blend of influences and sounds, Super Ghost takes audiences on a winding rollercoaster of emotions in their new triumphant indie-rock track ‘Friendless’ (Out Friday, June 2).

Following an incredible year in 2022 and the success of their debut EP ‘Left For Dust’ in 2021, Super Ghost continues to impress with ‘Friendless’. This refined track delves deep into the complex journey individuals face when disconnected from their values and reluctant to admit their need for help. Through its raw and emotive lyrics, ‘Friendless’ tackles the stigma surrounding mental health, shedding light on the challenges that arise when pride prevents seeking assistance.

Lead vocalist Hudson MacMahon shares insight into the song’s inspiration, stating, “‘Friendless’ is a powerful exploration of the emotional journey individuals experience when they disconnect from their own values and struggle to admit their need for help. It confronts the complexity of mental health, addressing the stigma surrounding it and the difficulties that arise when someone is too proud to acknowledge their struggles.”

‘Friendless’
showcases a captivating sonic journey with its contrasting elements, seamlessly transitioning from mellow and melancholic verses to adrenaline-packed choruses through tempo changes. The track continuously evolves, building anticipation and intensity as it progresses, culminating in an epic rock crescendo. Gracefully drifting away, ‘Friendless’ closes out with the delicate touch of a gentle guitar solo.

This is paired with the song’s twisting melody and poignant lyrics that invite listeners to reflect on their own encounters with mental health challenges and emphasize the importance of seeking support when necessary.

Alexander Shoesmith, reflecting on the song, adds, “‘Friendless’ is our most emotive song to date. It explores the damage that can result from mental breakdowns, particularly in those who are strong, stubborn, and proud. When grappling with personal struggles, it can be tempting to push away loved ones and attribute one’s own shortcomings to others. However, this cycle can be never-ending and exhausting. ‘Friendless’ is a reflection on the aftermath of a collapse, wondering if we can help rebuild without enduring further pain.”

Having secured support slots for prominent acts like Mid City (VIC) and Choosing Sides (SA), the trio has consistently sold out headlining shows at notable venues such as Vinnie’s Dive Bar (Gold Coast), Greaser Bar (Brisbane), and The Bearded Lady (Brisbane). They have also made their mark on the East Coast, performing in Tambourine, the Sunshine Coast, Kingscliff, Byron Bay, and Newcastle.

With the support of the Regional Arts Development Fund in partnership with the Gold Coast City Council, Super Ghost continues to deliver their intoxicating fusion of genres and sounds, captivating audiences across the nation.

Vicetone Continues Their “Departing Reality” EP Rollout with New Emotive and Personal Dancefloor-Friendly Single “The World Has A Heartbeat”

by the partae June 4, 2023
written by the partae

Artist: Vicetone
Title: The World Has A Heartbeat
Label: Self-released

Download / Stream

The Dutch duo Vicetone is back with their newest track from their forthcoming “Departing Reality” EP – scheduled for a release this summer. “The World Has A Heartbeat” is a very special record to these Platinum-certified artists, as it throws back to their signature sound that the listeners and their fans know from Vicetone‘s earlier hits. Fusing breathy vocals and cinematic melodies, and even guitar instrumentals with a funky and digitized drop, “The World Has A Heartbeat” is both emotionally charged and dancefloor-friendly. The record follows Vicetone‘s recent single “Dopamine Junkie” and precedes the full EP coming out this summer and Vicetone‘s EP-backed tour. Keep an eye out for the drop and tour dates coming soon!

“This song is very special to us. The sound of the drop is inspired by the classic Vicetone sound of ‘Nevada‘ and ‘Walk Thru Fire,’ but with a fresh mix of our newer sound as well. We’re so excited to share this with our fans and hope the melody and music resonate with people.” – Vicetone

Since forming in 2012, Vicetone have brought both sophisticated musicality and untamed imagination to all of their output. Musicians/producers Ruben den Boer and Victor Pool craft every song with profound attention to detail, creating an emotionally charged brand of dance music that’s led them to amass over 1 billion combined streams across all platforms to date and brought them global notoriety. In all of their material, Vicetone taps into the creative chemistry they discovered upon writing their first track together in college. Bound by a passion for groundbreaking dance music, the duo made their debut with 2012’s “Harmony” and promptly began landing gigs around Europe, eventually bringing their exhilarating live show to festivals around the world. As their global following grew exponentially, Vicetone soon took North America and Asia by storm. Successes include their 2019 single “Something Strange“, a #1 hit on SiriusXM‘s BPM channel, “Nevada” (over 212 million streams on Spotify), and a viral hit with “Astronomia” (almost 310 million streams on Spotify alone) – the track that soundtracked a global TikTok meme, quickly amassing over 1 million combined daily streams, which is certified Gold in France and Germany and also reaching Platinum in Norway, Sweden, and Finland. It was also top 10 on Spotify’s Global Viral Top 50 and the 2nd most Shazamed song worldwide. Delivering their most sonically ambitious body of work yet, Vicetone released their debut album – “Legacy,” on April 2nd, 2021 via Monstercat. Summer 2023 sees the release of their EP titled “Departing Reality.”

No Longer Kids Interview

by the partae May 31, 2023
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?
We’re from the Melbourne South east suburbs.

How did the band form?

It was a little after covid we (band members Blake and Jackson) got back in touch years after high school. We’d just go to Blake’s house and play some covers and old favourites (silver chair, nirvana, foo fighters and so on) until we decided to make our own music in the summer of 2022. Shortly after we released our first song officially (under the weather) in august 2022, we introduced keenan, our second Guitarist into the band, who we’d been doing some rehearsals with for a couple months. We all bonded over the love of the same music and having the same energy in our playing. We also love a cold tap.

What’s been happening recently?

Since the release of our first single back in august 2022, we’ve been writing more songs, releasing more music and doing a line of live shows based in the Mornington peninsula. Building our repertoire and evolving our sound.
How’s it been growing up in Melbourne?

I’ve always felt like Melbourne has had this great culture attached to it even when I was growing up; catching AFL games with my mates, being able to go into the Dandenong ranges for hike trips, weekends away at Phillip island to surf, or experience a rich city life atmosphere in the CBD. It’s fair to say I’ve always felt very lucky to be here.
What’s the Melbourne music scene like at the moment?

I feel like the Melbourne music scene is coming back in a way I’ve never experienced. Almost reinforced after covid maybe? More often then not nowadays I hear my mates saying there going to see live music and bands play rather than go out clubbing or something alike. It’s seems to have a really strong local support behind it wherever you go, which is something I hold very highly about this city and community.
What or who influenced your single ‘Crash And Burn’?

The influence behind crash and burn came in three parts, kind of like a ‘before after and now’ situation. I remember feeling like a was always coming in and out of relationships in general and ultimately the feeling I remember the most was the ‘crashing’ and burning’ part. Or the ‘after and now’.  You know like there’s always good and bad moments, but for me musically I seem to draw the most off the bad. That’s not me saying that’s a good thing to do, it’s just the way it is for me haha.
How did this single come about?

Well after we had the key components of the music in our hands and the general tone for the track, we took it into the band properly and trialed it in a set. I think we had maybe 3-4 different versions from memory. But the one you hear is the one we loved.

Where and when did you record and who did you work with?

We recorded crash and burn in early April with Tim from restless noise studio at wrangler studios in Footscray. Great spot always feels like a little piece of home in there.

Do you have further plans for an EP?

We definitely plan on bringing an EP out by the end of the year. And we plan to continue to build on it everyday until then.

What’s planned for 2023 and beyond?
We just wanna continue on the path we’re on at the moment. We’re all loving it and just wanna enjoy every bit. I think it’s important to remember the journey.  we started by playing music in a house packed with our mates just for a good time and a few laughs. We hope if you come to any of our shows you can be apart of that experience with us.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment we’re listening to this track called whole by basement. We found it surfing YouTube one night after rehearsals. Love the all around flow and energy of this song.
Favourite food and place to hangout?

Favourite food would probably be gyg if we’re talking takeaway. If we’re talking cooked meals you can’t skip nannas gnocch come over for a bowl you’ll lose your mind. If we’re hanging anywhere good, (only the real ones will know) it’s The Hollow.

FOLEY return with some of Aotearoa’s best new pop music in ‘TONGUE’ Single taken from forthcoming debut album CROWD PLEASER Foley named Spotify EQUAL AU/NZ ambassador

by the partae May 29, 2023
written by the partae

Continuing to blaze their own trail as Aotearoa pop music enjoys well-deserved focus and attention from outside of the island, pop duo Foley add to the momentum with the release of new single, ‘TONGUE’.Following on from the release of their Crowd Pleaser, Pt. 1 collection of songs, that include the likes of ‘Smooth It Over’, ‘Killing Me Babe’ and ‘Nothing’; as well as their most recent single, ‘On The Rocks’, this new cut from Foley demands your attention for the jump.

It then wastes no time in pulling the listener into its rich and textured realm of pop sounds, bolstered by the addictive vocals of Ash Wallace. Between Wallace and bandmate Gabe Everett, the multi-instrumentalists and songwriters are the perfect creative partners.

Harnessing an innate ability to read each other’s energy and elevate each other on the track and in studio, Foley have conjured a creative formula that has turned them from buzz artists, into ones pop fans and industry are advised to keep a keen eye on as 2023 continues to roll out.

Most recently, Foley have been named as the latest ambassador for Spotify’s EQUAL AU/NZ branded playlist for May; official digital billboards launched, featuring Foley, in Times Square.

Consistently working on their craft together since 2017, the Foley appeal has netted the duo widespread acclaim in Aotearoa. With over 10.8 million worldwide streams, with 2 million listeners attributed to Spotify alone; Foley’s impact has been established, well and truly.

Cutting their teeth on large stages supporting the likes of Remi Wolf, Tove Lo, BENEE, Two Door Cinema Club, Flight Facilities and more, Foley haven’t rested on their laurels.

Taking these formative experiences, as well as lauded nominations for Aotearoa Music Awards and the respected APRA Silver Scroll Award, Foley channel confidence in their work into each new project.

The band has received 5x Top #10 tracks on the New Zealand pop charts, while their debut EP cracked the Top #10 on the New Zealand album chart. And now, since inking a new deal with Nettwerk, Wallace and Everett’s global expansion has been given added fuel.

“We’re so incredibly excited about the imminent release of our DEBUT ALBUM Crowd Pleaser!!! This album is a culmination of 2 years of writing and experimentation, chats between friends, and unpacking the corners of our lives and experiences in music.

The world we’ve been building musically and visually, has been such a pleasure to inhabit and bring fans into;  it’s only going to get bigger and better from here. We’re planning festival runs and more live shows, and a few other tricks up our sleeve for the final album drop. Can’t wait!” FOLEY

Described as a playful take on surface level relationships, ‘Tongue’ saw Foley team up with long-time collaborator Josh Fountain (BENEE, Ruel) to lay the track down during the recording of Crowd Pleaser – the band’s debut album, released in two halves.

The way ‘Tongue’ positions itself within the wider Foley team indicates that the second half of the Crowd Pleaser project is going to highlight the band’s versatility as genre-bucking songwriters, as well as their immersive, fun nature.

“‘Tongue’ is a playful take on surface level relationships – where we love the idea of someone but can’t trust them when it comes down to it. You can’t put your finger on what doesn’t feel right, and you get caught up in the allure of the unknown.”  FOLEY

The track spotlights the creative dynamic between Wallace and Everett, and their clear shared love for groove and fun pop arrangements. The energy never dips on ‘Tongue’ – a common throughline of Foley’s music – but here, it is presented and delivered through a fresh lens.

Spotify’s Homegrown and Heavy Playlist

“Even with the re-emergence of nü metal sweeping through our nation, Druid have always marked themselves as somewhat of an anomaly.”
(Hysteria Mag) [About ‘HANG IN THERE (IT GETS WORSE)’
‘DTHBLW’ Music Video Premiered via Knotfest

“Druid are re-writing the definition, bringing heaviness to the world in the form of their new breed of nu-metal/metalcore machinations.” (Maniacs)
“Damn, this goes hard! Intensity dialed up and the riffs are searing.”

(Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J Unearthed)

Australian metalcore powerhouse, Druid, continues to make waves in the heavy music scene with their latest single, ‘HANG IN THERE (IT GETS WORSE)’, which they are now pairing with a chilling and haunting music video. The track, released on May 12th, delves into the depths of mental health issues and the inner struggles that accompany them, showcasing Druid’s unyielding style and raw intensity.

Now, Druid unveils the haunting and suffocating music video for ‘HANG IN THERE (IT GETS WORSE)’. Produced by Crow Rivers Visuals, the video perfectly captures the essence of the track’s dark themes as the band performs amidst an ominous warehouse backdrop. The visuals intensify the emotional impact of the song, immersing viewers in a chilling atmosphere that echoes the struggles depicted in the lyrics.

With their powerful and honest lyrics, volatile vocals, and explosive energy, ‘HANG IN THERE (IT GETS WORSE)’ serves as a reflection of co-lead vocalist Jordan Williams’ personal experiences with depression and mental health challenges. Williams’ hostile vocal delivery, paired with brutally honest lyrics, authentically convey the weight and pressure that come with such struggles. The song carries a purging, fiery feel that resonates with listeners on a visceral level.

The intense and cathartic composition of ‘HANG IN THERE (IT GETS WORSE)’ is further accentuated by lacerating riffs and unrelenting breakdowns, creating an unyielding sonic experience. The chorus, referencing Bring Me The Horizon’s 2008 album ‘Suicide Season,’ not only pays homage to an influential band but also alludes to Williams’ enduring battle with mental health, which has been a part of his life from a young age.

Having solidified their position in the Australian heavy scene since the release of their debut EP in 2019 and subsequent string of powerful singles, Druid has shared stages with renowned acts including Void Of Vision, Alpha Wolf, The Beautiful Monument, Suspryia, Earthcaller, Lune, Diamond Construct, and many more.

Druid’s previous releases have garnered significant support from esteemed platforms such as Triple J (The Racket), Triple M’s Hard and Heavy, Hysteria, and Maniacs. The band’s presence on Spotify’s Homegrown and Heavy Playlist has also contributed to their well-deserved recognition. Notably, their single ‘DTHBLW‘ premiered via Knotfest, leading to an invitation to perform at Knotfest’s Pulse of the Maggots streaming festival, headlined by Hero The Hero.

The single is available now, and the accompanying music video can be viewed on the band’s official platforms.

Following the success of their late 2022 release ‘Somebody Loves You’ and their early 2023 collab with FEELDs on ‘Was It Ever Really Anything?’, Western Australian-based duo, The Money War, are stripping things back with their new single Ride, out on Friday, May 26. The duo are also announcing the release of their EP ‘I Don’t Hear You Anymore’, out June 23.

Inspired by the idea of living in the moment, ‘Ride’ captures the essence of happiness in simplicity. With minimal production, the single features only stripped back guitar and vocals, providing a liberating energy to sit and resonate with.

Lead vocals from Dylan Ollivierre, backed up by Carmen Pepper, deliver a lulling, easy-going track that showcases the duo’s emotive lyricism and raw talent.

Speaking on the unplugged essence of the track, Ollivierre states:

“I wanted the song to feel like a ‘lost demo’, a bit rough around the edges and to feel like someone playing a song in their bedroom. The aim was to make the song feel emotive without all the production bells and whistles.”

Pepper
adds to what the song means to the two, “We’re currently at a point in our lives where things are pretty chaotic with raising a young family and trying to juggle a few different projects. I sometimes find myself wishing the time away and dreaming of a day when we can have a bit more freedom, so I have to remind myself that this is such an important time for us and we should enjoy it while we’re in it.”

As a BMG/Mirror Publishing-signed duo, The Money War has toured nationally with acts Meg Mac, Dope Lemon, Holy Holy and many more. Their dreamy indie-folk stylings are reflected in ‘Ride’, with Ollivierre’s and Pepper’s vocals blending seamlessly over the stripped back guitar.

With over 3 million streams on Spotify, The Money War has seen continued support from the likes of Tone Deaf, Rolling Stone AU, Blunt Mag, NME, and The Music, and has performed at local festivals like FOTSUN, as well as international stages at SXSW, BIGSOUND, and Southbound Festival.

‘Ride’
is a poignant reminder to cherish life’s moments, and with its authentic and raw sound, the single is sure to be a hit among fans and critics alike. Join The Money War on a journey when ‘Ride’ released on Friday, May 26. The EP, ‘I Don’t Hear You Anymore’ will follow on June 23.

Gold Coast/Yugambeh Country-based artist Eimhin, pronounced Ev-an, returns with his captivating new single, ‘The Lough’, set to release on Friday, May 26, ahead of his first international tour through Ireland, Netherlands and Germany. Known for his ethereal indie-folk/rock sound, Eimhin’s music delves deep into the human experience, crafting poignant melodies that resonate on a profound level.

Eimhin’s musical journey is a testament to his diverse background and unwavering artistic vision. Drawing inspiration from his Irish folk heritage, he embarked on a path that traversed musical theatre, original bands, and an exploration of genres such as punk rock, hardcore, glam, and emo.

Since debuting in 2022, Eimhin has embraced a fresh artistic chapter, blending his multifaceted influences into a distinctive sound that captivates hearts. Through gender non-conforming fashion and vulnerable songwriting, Eimhin fearlessly expresses his authentic self, pushing boundaries and inviting listeners into a world of introspection and self exploration.

Now, ‘The Lough’ builds upon the artist’s foundation of heartbreaking honesty and musical whimsy. The track delicately weaves a tale of love, loss, and the secrets we keep to protect one another.

Slow burning, with its haunting guitar melody and poignant lyrics, ‘The Lough’ reveals this captivating narrative, steadily building in intensity and emotion. As the melody gracefully unfurls, the track crescendos with percussion, harmonies, organs and more to a powerful ending with an impact that lingers long after.

‘The Lough’ unravels the nature of Eimhin’s grandmother’s death while touching upon the profound impact it had on his own mother. The song reflects on the echoes of his grandmother in his mother’s features, mannerisms, and outlook on life, celebrating the unbreakable bond that transcends time and space. Eimhin speaks on its deeply personal significance:

“’The Lough’ is about the nature of my grandmother’s death, but it’s about my mother too, and the secrets we keep to try and protect each other. There is a poem by Helen Steiner Rice that was chosen for my grandmother’s prayer card at her funeral called “When I Must Leave You”. The sentiment is such that one should keep on living even in the face of the grief that comes with the death of a loved one. That’s where I drew the inspiration for the end of the song.”

Eimhin’s real, raw and honest stories continue to resonate with audiences and critics alike. His enchanting music has garnered attention from influential platforms such as Double J, Blank Street Press, Scenestr, AAA Backstage, Livewire AU, and more.

Canadian brothers DVBBS teams up with Grammy-nominated R&B artist Jeremih and singer-songwriter SK8 for “Crew Thang,” a genre-bending collaboration. The track’s unique style rides on dynamic melodies and groovy house basslines, all wrapped up with upbeat but velveteen vocals for a perfect balance of sexy and fun. This combination makes for the perfect anthem, launching this year’s summer season, making unforgettable memories, and doing your own crew thang on or off the dance floor. It follows DVBBS‘s “Synergy” with Timmy Trumpet from last month, “Next To You” with Loud Luxury and Kane Brown from February, and the cheeky “SH SH SH (Hit That)” with Wiz Khalifa, Urfavxboyfriend and Goldsoul from the same month, also on Ultra Records. Jeremih recently released “Chose You” with French Montana, and earlier his solo single “Changes” on Def Jam/Universal Music Group. Be on the lookout for an official music video for “Crew Thang,” coming out very soon.

“Summer starts now… Big love to Jeremih for lending us his incredibly talented voice and our bro SK8 for making this come to life. ‘Crew Thang‘ is for you and your crew to turn up. 2023 vibes.” – DVBBS

“Following a huge single off my last project featuring DVBBS and Wiz Khalifa, I’m stoked to create something special with DVBBS again, and this time with Jeremih – an artist I’ve looked up to for a minute. ‘Crew Thang‘ is a blend of uptempo house mixed with pop melodies that make you feel good and wanna dance. This is another super proud moment in my career. Looking forward to touring and performing this song all summer.” – SK8

DVBBS

Only a few producers have risen to the top in the electronic music scene as quickly as DVBBS, who captured the industry’s attention with hits like “Tsunami” and “Not Going Home” and never let it go. The Canadian brothers Alex and Christopher have been continuously cultivating their sound since their debut in 2012 and have racked up an impressive display of collaborations with renowned names from diverse musical backgrounds, such as blackbear, 24kGoldn, Jasmine Thompson, Belly, NERVO, Juicy J, Galantis, Cody Simpson, Aloe Blacc, Icona Pop, GASHI,  and more. DVBBS continue to prove there’s nothing they can’t accomplish. Their hits, such as “La La Land,” “Gold Skies,” and the breakthrough “Angel” are staples in every dance music fan’s library. Prior to the global pandemic, DVBBS performed a staggering 250 dates per year at some of the world’s hottest music festivals and top-tier clubs, including Tomorrowland, EDC Las Vegas, Ultra Music Festival, Hakkasan Las Vegas or Ibiza‘s Amnesia, and Ushuaia. Throughout their career, DVBBS has proved they are relentlessly dedicated to expanding their global footprint and bringing cutting-edge new music to their listeners.

Jeremih

He quickly rose to fame in 2009 with his Top 10 debut single “Birthday Sex,” a lewd lullaby of sorts that sounded like nothing else at the time, optimizing the R&B artist’s slinking vocals and explicit wordplay. The slow jam effectively launched the Chicago native’s career, one that has been studded with additional and quite different Top 10 hits – “Down on Me” and “Don’t Tell ‘Em,” among several more gold and platinum singles. “Jeremih” (2009), “All About You” (2010), and “Late Nights: The Album” (2015), his first three LPs were similarly awarded, while “Planez” earned Jeremih a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance. “Late Nights with Jeremih” and “Late Nights: The Album” became the first two parts of a trilogy with the August 2016 release of the commercial mixtape “Late Nights: Europe.” The collection was highlighted by “London,” featuring Stefflon Don and Krept & Konan, and “Paris (Who Taught You),” assisted by Ty Dolla $ign. Jeremih and fellow Chicagoan Chance The Rapper closed out 2016 with the collaborative holiday mixtape “Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama.” During 2017 and 2018, Jeremih released a handful of singles, and in the latter, more productive year, the singer bundled four new solo cuts as “The Chocolate Box,” and teamed up again with Ty Dolla $ign to issue the full-length project “Mih-Ty.” Jointly issued by Def Jam and Ty‘s home label, Atlantic Records, “Mih-Ty” placed at number 60 on the Billboard 200. Its single “The Light” went gold. Jeremih issued some more singles in 2020, but during that year through 2022, he was much more active in featured artist and co-headliner roles, appearing on Afrojack and Chico Rose‘s “Cloud 9,” Kito and ZHU‘s “Follow,” and Benny Benassi‘s “Lovelife,” among many other tracks.

SK8

At 15, you could find SK8 in his room writing lyrics, and by his sophomore year, you could find him handing out CDs in high school. The 23-year-old moved to Los Angeles from Omaha, Nebraska, and linked with the venerable Taylor Gang, first breaking into the mainstream with his gold-certified single, “Like That,” with Jack & Jack and opening for revered rap icons like Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, and Rae Sremmurd. SK8 began building a dedicated fanbase of dreamers who related to his message of seizing every moment long before his eventual move to LA. Shortly after founding his own imprint – Alignment, and formally signing a joint venture with Atlantic Records via James McMillan‘s ART@WAR, SK8 released his major label debut EP, sk8sounds, which was buttressed by the standout singles “Omme (feat. Wiz Khalifa),” “XXX” and “Mood (feat. YK Osiris).” Over a year later, SK8 has turned a new page in his career with his first single of 2021, “Famous (feat. Tyla Yaweh),” and its associated forthcoming project, which finds the rising singer seamlessly blending punk/rock instrumentation with his hip-hop origins, the latest but not last development in SK8‘s rapidly evolving artistry.

The heaviness of Yellow Claw‘s signature sound is balanced by the delicate feel of the lyrics, making “Cold Like Snow” so much more than your typical head-banging crowd-pleaser. The new release follows Yellow Claw‘s recent “Hey Sensei” with Japanese female rapper SHACHI and $u$hi Girl. Read on for the story behind “Cold Like Snow,” and keep an eye out for more music from the guys coming soon.

“After our first studio session in a hotel in Singapore, we invited Sorn over to Bali to work on the music some more. She came over and brought snacks. It was then, and there we knew we had a true friendship going on.” – Yellow Claw

“This project is very exciting for me because I never imagined I would get the opportunity to work with world-renowned producers/DJs like Jim and Nils. We started off spontaneously recording a demo in a hotel room in Singapore, then I flew over to Bali to finish the song, and before I knew it, we were performing on the main stage at a festival in my hometown in Thailand and then at Marquee Singapore, which was my first club performance. I never thought I’d be able to be a part of such amazing opportunities, and I’ve learned so much working with the guys. I really hope my fans will enjoy this track that myself and the guys made together.” – Sorn

Skyuka Interview

by the partae May 26, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently based in Boorloo/Perth.

How did you first start in music?

I grew up in an Italian family, my Nonno had an amazing operatic voice, my Nonna loved singing and my  Dad used to sing and play in a band when he was young. I remember he would often have band practice at  the house and I’d listen (to the singers) wanting to front the band just like them. So from then on I was THAT  kid. The one who would be in all the talent competitions and all the musicals. It wasn’t until I was much  older and had more life experience that song writing really became my number one.

Your latest single ‘Michael Cera’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

When I wrote ‘Michael Cera’ I was listening to a lot of Vampire Weekend and just really enjoying the  playfulness of their earlier albums and how percussive their music was…so that definitely influenced the  sound. It felt refreshing to write something fun that people could clap and sing along to and have a laugh at,  but still had a lot of heart. Also my brother is heavily influenced by 90s grunge and he did all the guitar work  on the track so he brought the 90s fuzz/garage vibes which was a perfect fit.

How did you go about writing this track?

The idea came about when I was dating a guy who smiled like Michael Cera. As soon as I realised this I just  HAD to tell him straight away, so that’s where the chorus ‘you smile like Michael Cera’ came from. It was  actually the first part I wrote (I was driving at the time) and I couldn’t wait to get home to write the rest! I felt  I had so much to say about this person and our situation so the lyrics just poured out of me. The thing I find  most amusing though, is when I told him that he smiled like Michael Cera he absolutely hated it, and then I  went and wrote a whole song about it, with a music video and all.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

After I wrote the song I shared it with my brother (Token Friend) and then he came back with a draft version  of the production for the track (drums, bass and guitar) in logic which I absolutely loved and then I recorded  my vocals from home, added some extra touches and lots of live claps and BVs. Our drummer (Jasper) then  recorded live drums at ‘Debaser Studio’ and Andy Lawson mixed and mastered the song, as well as adding  some of his magic to the production.

What does this single mean to you?

‘Michael Cera’ was the song that marked the beginning of a new sound for me, and it felt pretty special as  my brother did most of the production. We have always really bonded over our love of music, but it’s only  been the past couple of years that we’ve decided to make it more collaborative and it’s been the best move  for both of us. There’s something about making music with a sibling, there’s a depth of understanding and  feel which I swear is only in the blood, and it’s beautiful to be able to share the joy and the wins with each  other.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

‘What are rockstars doing today’ by Magic Dirt, it is such an underrated album.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?

After this single I’m presenting an installation at ‘Strange Exhibition’ in Perth, my piece will be called ‘The  Michael Cera Experience’ and it will be an audio/visual experience that will be oh so very strange and  humorous. Very grateful to have been selected. After that I will be releasing 2 more singles, with the EP  coming out later this year, playing some more shows, and hopefully acting opposite Michael Cera (haha I  wish).

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I am pasta obsessed. I also love chocolate and make myself a hot chocolate (or 2) every single day.  Somehow I never get sick of it.

My fave place to hang out…well believe it or not, I’m a total homebody, but if I have to choose somewhere  else other than home it would have to be the beach or a walk in nature, and really anywhere with a dog. I  find nature super calming and great for my creativity.

SKYUKA releases vibrant, indie pop single ‘MICHAEL CERA’

by the partae May 24, 2023
written by the partae

Perth-based pop icon Skyuka releases the incredibly catchy track, ‘Michael Cera’. With a blend of indie rock, ’90s fuzz and a touch of humour, this infectious tune will be your favourite bop of the year.

‘Michael Cera’ showcases Skyuka’s unique blend of upbeat pop melodies alongside introspective, witty lyrics. It tells a relatable story of falling for someone who you just can’t seem to escape from, and the frustration that comes with it. It’s a reflection on unrequited love, delivered with Skyuka’s lightheartedness and sass.

“When I wrote Michael Cera I was listening to a lot of Vampire Weekend and just  really enjoying the playfulness of their earlier albums which influenced the writing process of this song. It felt refreshing to write something fun that people could clap and sing along to and have a laugh at, but still had a lot of heart.

I was basically telling myself I didn’t want to see this person anymore because of their  addictive tendencies…but at the same time I felt like a huge hypocrite as I was clearly addicted to them.”
Skyuka

Joining forces with Debaser Studios in Perth, Skyuka collaborated with Andy Lawson (Noah Dillon, Death By Denim, Drapht, Tired Lion), who beautifully mixed and mastered ‘Michael Cera’.

Artwork by: SKYUKA

Along with the release of the single, Skyuka has blessed the world with a music video for ‘Michael Cera’. The video, directed by Skyuka herself and videographed by Dylan Guy, promises to be a quirky, clever masterpiece, with nostalgic visuals and an engaging, entertaining storyline.

The video follows a storyline of Skyuka and her fixation on Michael Cera with many hilarious references to the actor.

“Being a Michael Cera fan I knew I could have a lot of fun with this video. I found this Michael Cera mask on eBay and I think that was when I realised I was onto something. I wanted the video to be very narrative driven and fun like the song.”“I did a very detailed storyboard for this video and a lot of thought and attention to detail went into the props and settings as I really wanted to capture the 90s/early 2000s vibes that come to mind when I think of Cera. The first scene was actually shot in the lounge room at my parent’s house and I remember being up till 4am the day before the shoot decorating the entire wall with Michael Cera posters and rearranging all their furniture like a mad woman. I directed the video myself and Dylan Guy shot and edited the video.”

Skyuka

Skyuka has also had previous support across community radio including RTR FM, Radio Fremantle, Edge Radio and 97.9 FM. Skyuka is known for her eclectic sound; with ‘Michael Cera’, she is making her mark on the global pop scene, with an EP set to be released later this year.

PRAISE FOR SKYUKA

“The song is bubblegum pop delicious with its high-stepping canter, buzzing garage guitars, rampant choruses and wry lyrics…”
Backseat Mafia

“It’s a fierce and focused pop tune lush with electronic grooves and this larger-than-life assertiveness, channeling names amongst Australian pop’s most exciting as she dives into the dark, moodiness of pop music – something we often don’t see.”
Pilerats

“With a little lick of jazz on the vocals, this opens up into a luxuriously dark banger.”
Triple J – Gemma Pike

“Awesome energy and lyrically on point”
Hunter Brother’s Media

‘Michael Cera’ is out now.
