On Dawson Gools 19th birthday, he left his single traffic light town to study at Berklee College of Music. Although he dropped out after one year, he kept writing songs while working jobs in a handful of places. From Montreal to the Austrian Alps, working as anything from a line cook to a mailman. It was during this time he found his distinctive and honest voice as a songwriter, and producer. The majority of Dawson’s self produced debut EP, “January, Backdoor”, was written and recorded in Vancouver, Canada. The EP sounds most at home in the rain, or when there’s a fog rolling in.

“I wrote ‘I Was Wrong’ about caring for someone who is not ready to be helped. A family member had been falling back into some old habits and–rather than repeat encouraging phrases over and over–I felt like I had to be honest and say, ‘hey, maybe things won’t work out, and that’s ok’. it’s a bit pessimistic but it’s how I was feeling at the time.
