Hot on the heels of her showstopping performance at Yours & Owls Festival, Wollongong up-and-comer Chelsea Daghita today shares her new single ‘Baby Boy’. Stream HERE.
On ‘Baby Boy’, Daghita’s vocal is pushed into new territory, balancing its delicate natural warmth with a newfound strength as she experiments with haunting runs and 70s rock grit. Lyrically, ‘Baby Boy’ invites the listener to share in Daghita’s quiet angst, as she reflects on the mismatched potential of a would-be lover.
“The song is about somebody who I wanted to care for, but they really didn’t have it together at all,” reflects Daghita. “I thought I could be the person to help them out, but it got to a point where I just couldn’t stand seeing someone with such potential destroy themselves. He was just a Baby Boy that needed to sort his stuff out, and I’m not his mother or his saviour.”
Daghita worked with producer Blake Bashfield (Sesame Girl) on the new single, and together they were able to draw upon her broad influences – from Clairo and Julia Jacklin to Bob Seger and Fleetwood Mac – to strike a balance between her vintage spark and ambitious, future-focused songwriting.
“Recording this track was so much fun. I wanted the drums to be primal, almost instinctive, similar to the drums in Tusk by Fleetwood Mac,” she says. “I learnt and achieved a lot during the writing and recording of this track about my own writing, and how I want to write more in the future. ”
Swiftly becoming an in-demand artist on the live circuit, Chelsea Daghita is set to close out the year with a growing list of festival appearances and support slots. Earlier this month, she performed at Yours & Owls festival alongside the likes of DMA’s, G Flip, and Ball Park Music, and next weekend is set to open for Teen Jesus & the Jean Teasers, with additional shows to be announced.
ABOUT CHELSEA DAGHITA
Raised on her family’s 1970s record collection and drawn to artists like Clairo, Daghita pairs vintage warmth with lyrically ambitious songwriting. 23-year-old Chelsea Daghita is feeling the growing pains of anyone her age. Growing up in regional New South Wales, Australia, she is largely unaffected by inner-city trends, which has made the learning and mistakes of being a young adult all the more real for her; and that’s reflected in her music.
Homeschooling allowed her to indulge in music classes. That freedom is reflected in her music and her tastes. Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac and more modern inspirations including Clairo all coalesce into recordings that she describes in terms such as Orange Velvet or Primal, Gritty, and Dusty. She has played live extensively in and around Wollongong, including across festivals such as Ohana and Yours and Owls. She has been on support lineups for Spacey Jane, Lime Cordiale and Hockey Dad.
