After the worldwide successful pre-order launch of the box-set LA REALIDAD DE LOS SUEÑOS, which immediately sold out, we’re happy to announce another highlight from The Mars Volta.

The mythological album, the unfinished original recordings of De-Loused In The Comatorium, known as LANDSCAPE TANTRUMS will be digitally available on April 23.

The recording of LANDSCAPE TANTRUMS reveals a sound that is more raw, more emotional, more tightly coiled. “Anyone listening to these tracks will get a glimpse into that time, into Omar’s soul” explains Johann Scheerer from Clouds Hill, who produced the box- set in collaboration with Omar. Rodríguez-López responded to the end of his post-hardcore band, At The Drive-In by founding The Mars Volta, but the LANDSCAPE TANTRUMS sessions reveal a confidence and sensitivity that brings this legacy into The Mars Volta. “It is a central part of the band’s history” reports Johann Scheerer, “the recordings prove just how much this band had to share, even so soon after its founding.”

The single Inertiatic ESP will be the only digital single taken from the album Landscape Tantrums, digitally available worldwide on March 26.

KAI CULT – Unveils Momentous New EP ‘OK BOOMER’

Melbourne-based post-punk DIY artist KAI CULT has just revealed his apocalyptic new EP ‘OK BOOMER’ – recorded in his share house bedroom and mixed and mastered by Ashwin Rao of Singaporean garage-rock band Knightingale.

‘OK BOOMER’ is five tracks of riveting post-punk that drips with aggression and angst, creating a dystopian sonic world through the use of raw instrumentation and KAI CULT’s commanding vocals. The record’s in-your-face nature makes it wholly unable to ignore, as its politically charged lyrics reference issues from immigration to the worldwide pandemic.

KAI CULT talks about the inspiration behind ‘OK BOOMER’:

“’OK BOOMER’ was written as a response to the events of 2020. It is a satirical take on the disturbing disconnect that continues to widen between the younger and older generation as society is increasingly becoming more politically aware and activated. Many questionable decisions were being made by people in power that effected, marginalized, and caused great suffering for many members of society, and thanks to the internet, many bore witness to the various acts of ignorance, cruelty, and greed committed in varying degrees, all over the globe. In an event as horrific as what we just experienced, it can be exhausting to detail the who’s and what’s of every event that happened during 2020. Sometimes you simply just need to say, ‘OK BOOMER!’”

Opener ‘LET ME STAY’ is a surging pocket rocket, sucker punching the listener with two minutes of searing guitar solos and wailing screeches, rising like a tidal wave of distortion, as KAI CULT screams, “why can’t you let me stay, I got friends around, and I’m doing ok”.

Second single, ‘CIGARETTE BURNS’ then immediately kicks into actions with splashing guitar chords, frenetic drums and KAI CULT’s megaphone-like vocals as the track builds and crescendos towards a chaotic ending. Lead single ‘MASSIVE CHECKS’ is next up with grinding bass lines, commanding sung-spoken lead vocals and atmospheric guitar vibrato that forms a mutated, captivating party punk anthem.

Crash cymbals wash across the arrangement of fourth track ‘TIME’, intertwining with echoing drums and reverberating guitar to form an intense partnership as KAI CULT sings about loss and the desperation behind a sick family member simply trying to ‘borrow time’.

The fifth and final track, ‘FOR REAL’, closes out the record with booming kick drums and spoken word vocals, mixing a hip-hop aesthetic with KAI CULT’s trademark chunking bass and harsh guitar riffs, showing off his dynamic range and setting the stage for his intriguing musical future.

Singles off ‘OK BOOMER’ have been widely embraced by triple j Unearthed and Australian radio stations 3RRR, 2SER, 4ZZZ, PBS FM, 2XX and Radio Adelaide. They’ve also received support from blogs CVLT Nation (USA), Hysteria Magazine, HEAVY Mag, The AU Review, The Music, Backseat Mafia (UK), Milky and The Soundcheck, with both accompanying video clips being added to the ABC’s Rage and ‘MASSIVE CHECKS’ being featured as their esteemed Wild One of the week.

Today, Perfume Genius releases the IMMEDIATELY Remixes album via DSPs. IMMEDIATELY Remixes is a companion album to Perfume Genius’ Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, remixed in original running sequence by Boy Harsher, Jenny Hval, A. G. Cook, Actress, Danny L Harle, Jaakko Eino Kaleivi, Jim-E Stack, Planningtorock, Initial Talk, Nídia, Westerman, Actress, Koreless and Katie Dey. Hadreas has said, “I’m very honored to have all these incredible musicians rework these songs. I felt personally remixed listening to their versions, hearing the spirit of my song completely transformed was very magical. Each one feels like a little portal to a fucked up shared world.”  The 2xLP will be pressed onto metallic silver vinyl, limited to an edition of 2,500 exclusive to indie record stores as part of Record Store Day on June 12.

Tomorrow March 13, at 8AM AEDT the Perfume Genius Hotline will be open. Fans can call in to Perfume Genius’ Mike Hadreas and Alan Wyffels. They’ll answer your questions on love and relationships and spin tracks from Immediately Remixes. Fans can call in to +1 562-375-4827.

Prior to today’s album release, Perfume Genius had shared the A. G. Cook remix of ‘Describe,’ the Jim-E Stack remix of ‘Without You’ and Boy Harsher’s remix of ‘Your Body Changes Everything.’  Of that track Billboard noted, “Every now and then, an artist will release a ‘remix’ of one of their songs, and barely anything is different. That’s simply not the case for Perfume Genius’ new collaboration with Boy Harsher — the pair’s remix …is a complete departure from its source material. Subbing in a new melody concocted with moody synths and ’80s drum beats, the track transforms itself into an avant-pop phantasmagoria that blends perfectly with Mike Hadreas’ otherworldly vocals.”  Uproxx declared, “It perfectly encompasses both of the musicians’ reflective sound.”

From operatic acid-rave (‘Just A Touch’) to opulent 80’s synth-funk (‘On The Floor’), ambient club polyrhythms (‘Moonbend’) to breakbeat-addled electronic pop (‘Describe’), tech-damaged tremolo waltz (‘One More Try’) to a mid-song running artist commentary on the remix itself (‘Leave’), IMMEDIATELY Remixes is an endlessly surprising, imaginative and replayable set to match its source material.

Set My Heart On Fire Immediately  appeared on 2020 end of year lists by TIME Magazine, New York Times, Variety, Entertainment Weekly, Pitchfork, Billboard, The New Yorker, Vogue, NPR, Stereogum and many others. The album was produced by GRAMMY-winning producer Blake Mills and features contributions from musicians Jim Keltner, Pino Palladino, Matt Chamberlin and Rob Moose. It was recorded in Los Angeles, where Perfume Genius settled in 2017 with longtime partner and musical collaborator Alan Wyffels. The album explores and subverts concepts of masculinity and traditional roles, and introduces decidedly American musical influences.

In the wake of  Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, Hadreas appeared on JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE!, played a global live stream from The Palace Theater in downtown Los Angeles and announced the publication of Immediately, the book companion to the new album featuring iconic portraits of Perfume Genius by celebrated French photographer Camille Vivier.  Perfume Genius has also appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert performing ‘Whole Life’ for their #PlayAtHome series and on Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where he performed ‘On The Floor’ and ‘Jason’.

Perfume Genius – ‘Describe (A.G. Cook Remix)’

PRAISE FOR SET MY HEART ON FIRE IMMEDIATELY

“13 tracks of unfailing intensity and poetry, expressed via a sonic template that is thrillingly diverse.” – Barnaby Smith, Sydney Morning Herald ★★★★

“Hadreas wears his heart on his sleeve and unapologetically celebrates life with such sincerity and warmth that these tunes will inevitably touch the hearts and minds of listeners.” – Guido Farnell, The Music ★★★★

“Set My Heart On Fire Immediately is an excellent collection of storytelling and expression.” – Scott Hudson Beat 8/10

“His vision is fuller, his musicality is grander; if his earlier works were coming-of-age records, Hadreas sounds fully complete now.” – Conor Lochrie, X-Press 8/10

“At once gentle and fierce, this dichotomy is the very essence of Perfume Genius, a formidable talent who continues to break the mould of what it means to be an artist.” – Holly Pereria, STACK

“It’s an absolute tour de force, a record full of drama and emotion and pleasure and pain. If this is Perfume Genius quest for senation, then his latest is absolutely fizzing with it.” – DIY ★★★★★

“Rich, fascinating and moving” – The Guardian, Album Of The Week ★★★★★

“There’s a silver thread woven into each of these songs; Hadreas pulls and they move like a single breathing thing, just as bodies do when they’re pressed against each other, then released.” – The Independent ★★★★★

“Set My Heart on Fire Immediately is, as its demanding title suggests, his most confident work yet – a patient and emotionally sagacious record that floats and pummels with a sense of satisfied discovery.” – Exclaim! 9/10

“If the early albums were coming-of-age records, this is Perfume Genius, of age. The music isn’t any one thing. It’s everything, occasionally at once, playing with the ideas of hard and soft, innocence and danger, chaos and control, vastness and intimacy, leather and lace. The characteristic — thrilling — strangeness remains, particularly when Hadreas indulges the deeper registers of his singing voice.” – The New York Times

“a pop-perfect two and a half minutes.” – Rolling Stone on “‘Describe”

“‘Describe’ is Perfume Genius at their finest as Mike Hadreas takes us through a trip of multiple dimensions, unveils a screeching guitar and unleashes a heavy rhythm section on this ‘90s rock-feeling single” – Billboard

“… a thing of beauty and wonder” – Daily Telegraph ★★★★★

“… perfection”  – Attitude ★★★★★

“… blazes a new trail through his emotional landscape” – MOJO ★★★★

“… his most ensnaring album yet” – Sunday Times

“… atmospheric and very beautiful”  – The Times ★★★★

“… bold and intense” – Evening Standard ★★★★

“expertly crafted chamber-pop vignettes” – The Sun ★★★★

“Stunning”  – NME ★★★★

“one of most compelling transformations in modern music” – Crack 9/10

“burns with passion” – Loud & Quiet 9/10

“… songs of hope and survival” – Daily Mirror ★★★★

9.5/10 – The Line Of Best Fit

AN IMPRESSION OF PERFUME GENIUS’ SET MY HEART ON FIRE IMMEDIATELY
By Ocean Vuong

Can disruption be beautiful? Can it, through new ways of embodying joy and power, become a way of thinking and living in a world burning at the edges? Hearing Perfume Genius, one realizes that the answer is not only yes—but that it arrived years ago, when Mike Hadreas, at age 26, decided to take his life and art in to his own hands, his own mouth. In doing so, he recast what we understand as music into a weather of feeling and thinking, one where the body (queer, healing, troubled, wounded, possible and gorgeous) sings itself into its future. When listening to Perfume Genius, a powerful joy courses through me because I know the context of its arrival—the costs are right there in the lyrics, in the velvet and smoky bass and synth that verge on synesthesia, the scores at times a violet and tender heat in the ear. That the songs are made resonant through the body’s triumph is a truth this album makes palpable. As a queer artist, this truth nourishes me, inspires me anew. This is music to both fight and make love to. To be shattered and whole with. If sound is, after all, a negotiation/disruption of time, then in the soft storm of Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, the future is here. Because it was always here. Welcome home.—Ocean Vuong, author of On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous

SILKY ROADS UNVEIL SERENE DEBUT EP ‘GRANADA’

SUPPORT FOR SINGLES OFF ‘GRANADA’

“With ‘Pomegranate’, Silky Roads have delivered a psych-rocker draped in jazz-funk accoutrement that is sure to ‘capture the darkness and mystery that hits that certain spot for music lovers’.”
Atwood Magazine (USA)

“There is something thrilling about ‘Pomegranate’; I love the swagger and the vibe that Silky Roads brings.” – 4/5 stars
Nkechi Anele – triple j (AUS)

“Certifying this vibe. The band spools out this swampy surf rock broth and the vocals bellow richly through it.” – 4/5 stars
Dave Ruby Howe – triple j Unearthed (AUS)

“Infectious downbeat psychedelia that’s bursting with groove.”
Deafen County (AUS)

Sydney-based indie-rock quartet Silky Roads have just revealed their idyllic debut EP ‘Granada’ – produced by Yossif Kay.

‘Granada’ is five tracks of groove-laden surf-rock, filled to the brim with a sun-soaked aura, the sultry vocals of lead singer Guy Richards and the bands effortless instrumentational pulse.

Silky Roads talks about the message behind ‘Granada’:

“‘Granada’ is a culmination of our excitement in starting to write music, a blooming friendship between four lads, and a bunch of wild world events that have changed the way we interact as human beings. We want to introduce the world to ‘Granada’, and ask everyone out there to take a listen so that we can continue to document our perspectives through the thing we love most, and that’s music.”

Opener ‘Pomegranate’ immediately captivates the listener with its muted guitar picks, fluidly intertwining with silky bass and steadfast drums to give the track an all-encompassing lift. This introduces track two ‘Caramel Slice’, a slow-burning jam of carefree indie-rock, showcasing rich melodies and gliding choruses.

The third track ‘Traffic Jam’ slowly unfolds with reverb-soaked guitars, before launching into fascinating rhythms and an unexpected tempo change, keeping the listener consistently surprised. Expansive bass lines and funk guitar chords introduce fourth track ‘Rashida’, as it frequently changes pace and flow keeping the listener off-guard and entranced.

‘Granada’ closes with reflective number ‘Keep Up’, comprising beautifully arranged guitars and Guy Richards’ croons, concisely wrapping up the EP with the band’s now trademark style of surf-rock.

Singles off ‘Granada’ have been widely embraced by Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, 2SER, SYN FM, 4ZZZ and Radio Adelaide. They’ve also seen support from online blogs Atwood Magazine (USA), Deafen County, The Soundcheck, Forte Magazine, AAA Backstage and Something You Said.

While they’ve only been a band for a short period, Silky Roads have shown themselves to be prolific up and comers. The four songwriters take inspiration from the likes of Ocean Alley, Lime Cordiale and Mako Road, creating a unique blend of indie and psych-rock.

‘Granada’ is available worldwide now

SAYCET – FATHER
STREAM / PURCHASE HERE
____________________________________________________________________________________

Parisian musician, composer and producer Saycet today releases the next EP ahead of his anticipated new album, Layers. Featuring new remixes from Irène Drésel and S8JFOU, FATHER EP is out now via Météores Music. The EP is now available to stream/purchase and will be released on vinyl on Record Store Day – 12th June.

Over recent months, Pierre Lefeuvre’s Saycet project has continued to reach impressive and new artistic maturity. As Saycet prepares for the release of his fourth album, September of 2020 saw the Parisian multi-instrumentalist entice fans with opening single MOTHER. Driven by experimentation, today’s new single FATHER, was born from a desire to remix, reimagine, and unravel the creative mechanisms behind his own work. FATHER is a rework of MOTHER but formed as an original piece of music in its own right. As a counterpart to the original, the track proposes a more minimal, gentler and luminous take on the synthetic, melodic and powerful compositions, built around elegiac vocals. This new, unmistakably Saycet single features remixes from Irène Drésel and S8JFOU and is completed by an instrumental and ambient-infused track titled Neige, which is available exclusively on the vinyl version.

At first glance, Saycet’s journey may seem peculiar but in reality, it is extremely fluid. A backward evolution away from our current era, which churns out artists non-stop – a path that has made Pierre Lefeuvre, the brain behind his Saycet project for the last 15 years, a key figurehead in the French electronic music landscape.

After release his first album, 2005’s One Day At Home, Saycet built upon a genre that had fallen into relative disinterest. Deliberately melancholy, errant electronic music made somewhat more accessible by pop melodies and experimental sounds. An outsider by nature, he was nonetheless spotted by influential media outlets, finding an international fanbase that would remain faithful to him through the years.

With time, Saycet’s creative work became more refined, and his influences merged into a highly personal approach that succeeded in linking cerebral music with an opening to a wider audience. 2010’s Through The Window and 2015’s Mirage continued the project’s evolution towards a more timeless sound that shone through its arrangement work and an asserted versatility. Tours of Asia and collaborations (with Juliette Armanet and Yan Wagner among others) helped Saycet grow further (yet still outside of the mainstream’s radar) nonetheless finding his niche on the international music map. His approach to live performances cemented his place as an innovator, always in search of new aesthetic grounds, with stage shows that implemented video projection as a source of lighting rather than as mere visual illustration, creating a truly immersive experience in the process.

Somewhat accidentally, Lefeuvre opened the doors to composing via images – a logical, uncalculated continuation for this production artisan, whose composition work is nourished by visual art and cinematic culture. He created his first score for the 2019 feature Un Vrai Bonhomme and started making headways into the circle of pop music composers who collaborate with filmmakers.

Most recently, Saycet composed the music for the Canal + documentary Bastard Lion along with La Révolution. Aired last year, La Révolution is Netflix France’s latest historical drama series set to the backdrop of a fictionally revised French Revolution – 1787. Composed by Saycet and also featuring four new reworks including of Haendel’s Sarabande, the official soundtrack is available to stream and purchase here.

Soon to be revealed, Saycet is also slated to be in residence in 2021 for a one-of-a-kind creative project built around the Château de Versailles’ architectural heritage and instruments.

New album ‘Like a Stone’ out April 23rd

Pre-order now from Father/Daughter Records (US) & Big Scary Monsters (UK/EU)

“Remember Sports make punky indie pop, combining scrappy guitar shredding with Perry’s brazen vocals.”
Pitchfork“The type of music that you can imagine getting sentimental about years from now, rock songs that will make you feel both homesick for who you were and excited about who you might become.”
The Fader

“Full of sharp, sweet insight and heart-tugging hooks.”
Rolling Stone

“Remember Sports spits out speedball jams that chronicle the uneasy uncertainty of youth – lost loves, giddy crushes – without getting too down about it.”
NPR Music

“Perfect slices of adolescent punk, full of clever and biting songs with catchy hooks and a whole lot to say.”
Stereogum

‘Like a Stone’, the new album from Philadelphia’s Remember Sports, is all about breaking away from old versions of yourself. Vocalist Carmen Perry (she/her) rummages through feelings of doubt and spins them into an imperative to treat herself more kindly; her experiences growing up with Catholicism and later studying religion, as well as living with an eating disorder, provide a visceral lens for the literal blood-and-guts self-scrutiny she writes through.

A gorgeously anxious ballad about avoidance, their latest single, ‘Materialistic’, finds Perry working her way through forgiveness. It provides a plaintive centrepiece for the record, as well as an astonishing outlet for guitarist Jack Washburn’s time-bending, scale-redefining solos.

“It’s about the feedback loop of me caring about my possessions because they hold special memories, and alternately thinking I’m a bad person for caring about a mostly meaningless pile of junk,” Carmen explains.

“This song is special to us because we left a lot of room for Jack to do what he does best, and Nadia Hulett of Nadine made us all cry when she laid down her unimaginably angelic vocals in one take.”

The songs on ‘Like a Stone’ are about insecurity, but they’re also about optimism—emerging from an intrusive thought with a new way to perceive and care for yourself, represented in spectacular denouements made possible by the closeness between the band members. “We’ve grown up together and grown to trust each other,” says Carmen. In recording, Jack felt drawn to music that’s “communal and loud and cathartic, but also kinda confidential and private. I hope we achieved something similar, where you can hear the influence of each of us in the album.” Carmen seconds that; “It feels seamless. To me, Jack and Catherine’s writing feels like an extension of my own.”

Jonny Kosmo shares new single/video ‘Firely’ and announces sophomore LP Pastry RIYL: Outkast, Avalanches, Jerry Paper, Haruomi Hosono

by the partae March 15, 2021
written by the partae

Introducing LA-based artist Jonny Kosmo and his new single/video ‘Firefly’. The funked-out track tells a story about the archeology of hope, and is accompanied by a vibrant video created by Salvador Cresta. The new track comes with the announcement of Jonny Kosmo’s sophomore album Pastry, due June 4, 2020 via Dinosaur City Records and Feeding Tube Records digitally and on limited edition 12″ vinyl.

Listen/watch ‘Firefly’ here.

Featuring a twisted synth solo from Tomas Dolas (Oh Sees/Mr. Elevator) and an outro composition from Logan Hone, ‘Firefly’ leads with the assumption we all have an inner glow; an inherent resourcefulness.

Kosmo says of the new track. “At times we have to dust off the artefacts to reconnect. The fossilisation of our lived experience is an invitation to be unpacked in learning to get out of our own way. I’ve always felt there is so much to learn from nature and bugs. Taking time to slow down and bring mindful curiosity to their presence always yields something new for me.”

Honeyed in funk and R&B, and steeped in pop-strange composition, Pastry touches upon themes of community, spiritual metamorphous, and inherent resiliency of spirit. These are spring-boarded by the records construction itself; songs often created from samples of others, continually folding in on itself. The pastiche speaks to the intention: the meta-narrative of personal and communal change. Pastry was recorded and mixed at Kosmo’s home studio Slimehouse as well as Record Studio 22 with Tomas Dolas (The Oh Sees/Mr. Elevator) and mastered by Alex Cooley. All of the album’s artwork was created by local Northeast Los Angeles muralist Rodolfo Kardona in celebration of community essence.

ABOUT JONNY KOSMO

Los Angeles artist Jonny Kosmo can best be described as zaney pop, funk-strange-soul. Feel-good and bouncy on the surface, a grounded ear yields psychologically thematic landscapes drawn from a history of working in mental health, bearing witness to metamorphic change and story. Live performances are characterised by community stage presence, brass sections, melting harmony and occasional trampolines. Kosmo’s debut self-titled release Jonny Kosmo (2019) saw international releases on ChiChing Records (Taipei) and Slimer Records (Italy). Following, Kosmo toured supporting Jerry Paper, sharing the stage locally with such acts as Gary Wilson, Guerilla Toss, and Reggie Watts.

Joelistics’ new production and concept record, Joelistics Presents Film School

by the partae March 15, 2021
written by the partae

“Joelistics is operating here with the kind of alternative hip-hop sonics yet to reach the Australian scene – in large part because the country’s mainstream rap identity is still finding popular form. It’d be wise to watch his renewed second phase, particularly with the launch of his own label Odd Head Music.” – MTV Australia

“He’s someone always at the cusp of what’s next, pushing forward new and unexplored ideas in a way that makes it feel like his specialty.” – Hayden Davies, Pilerats

Over the past few months Australian hip hop royalty Joelistics has been trickling out the first tastes of his ambitious new production record Joelistics Presents Film School. After rounding out a trio of genre-melding releases – ‘Yokai’, ‘Memory Palace’ and ‘5 Rivers’ – Joelistics is thrilled to finally reveal the remainder of his highly anticipated, moody and angular concept album, of over five years in the making.

OUT NOW via Odd Head Music, Film School is a departure for Joelistics as vocalist and MC, and sees the multi-instrumentalist leaning into his recently lauded ‘Best Producer’ role to concentrate his efforts on an expansive catalog of beats and synths. ‘70s Asian pop samples, psych-rock journey music and studio improvisations weave deep explorations of sonic experimentation, with string compositions, guzheng (Chinese harp), synths, samplers, drum machines and more.

“Who knew in the midst of writing a collaborative album of weird beats and psych jams I would find treasured collaborations with filmmakers and dancers? Joelistics presents Film School is a lot of things, it started off as an album and evolved into a series of collaborative filmed dance pieces that work as a unified whole drawing imagery from Asian ghost stories recontextualised in suburban Melbourne.” – Joelistics

Recalling his love of instrumental hip hop and trip hop from the ’90s and his penchant for post rock stylings, Film School is a record of collaborations. Predominantly instrumental, the few vocalists that feature on the album are all women of Asian descent. Parvyn Singh of The Bombay Royale features on the psych rock groove of ‘Samsara’ and dreamy single ‘5 Rivers’ and Hailey Cramer aka HAYTCH lends her vocals to the future soul of ‘Fool’. Joelistics’ underground string and synth side project, Garden Tiger made up of Francesca Mountfort on cello, Mindy Wang on guzheng and Joel on synths/beats, also feature on the record adding even more dimension to an already sensual piece alluding to fear and its connection to the senses in ‘Memory Palace’.

“With this music and the film, I wanted to weave an eerie feeling, reminiscent of empty streets, a distant sense of dread and the hypnotic patterns of lockdown life. I wanted the dancers to personify our collective fear of sickness and loneliness and how those fears dance at the edge of every moment we hold dear. Musically it is a blend of Pan Asian psychedelia, post rock stylings and lo fi synthscapes, made from the scraps of your ancestor’s vocals, dusty loops and traditional Chinese and Western instruments. The underlying feeling of this project is a meditation on the anxiety of our times and the transcendence that comes from facing fear.” – Joelistics

An ode to surreal dreamscapes and cinematic atmospheres, Film School draws on themes of Asian ghost stories, time displacement and sonic surrealism and traverses left-field beats, kraut rock and traditional Chinese and Indian music.

SNAKEHEADS IN CELEBRATION OF PETE LUSTY, SNAKEHEADS RELEASE SINGLE ‘SHIT I DON’T HAVE TIME FOR (FEAT. A. SWAYZE)’ – OUT NOW

by the partae March 15, 2021
written by the partae

On the 15th of March 2020, we lost our dear friend and Ivy League Records founding father, Pete Lusty to cancer. It’s a loss that resonates throughout every single member of our Ivy League family – artists, staff past and present, friends, family, and fellow travellers. We loved him. Without Pete there is a hole in all of our lives that we will never, ever be able to fill.

Exactly one year on from Pete’s heartbreaking departure, Ivy League Records are proud to release the debut single from Snakeheads, a posthumously named garage band partnership between Pete and his lifelong friend and collaborator, James Roden (John Reed Club, The City Lights). The song, ‘Shit I Don’t Have Time For’ is a musical white-knuckle celebration of Pete and James’ older siblings record collections (Buzzcocks, The Jam, The Clash). Featuring one of Pete’s favourite Ivy League artists, Andrew Swayze from A. Swayze and the Ghosts on lead vocals, the song perfectly encapsulates the vitality and endless energy that Pete brought to everything he did, and that swept up everyone in his orbit.

LISTEN: ‘Shit I Don’t Have Time For (feat. A. Swayze) – Snakeheads

The origins of Snakeheads date back Year 7 aged 12 years old when they met and bonded over music. Fast forward to 2014 with Pete and James both back in Sydney together after Pete’s many years traversing the globe managing the likes of The Vines, Jet and Empire of the Sun, the two high school friends were eager to return to their roots. They started jamming together every Monday night (“turning the worst night of the week, into the best”), playing only ‘70s English punk and US hardcore. “We only wanted to play what we loved at 15 years old, with no pressure and no point,” says James. Backed by Kit Warhurst (Rocket Science, The City Lights) on drums and James’ brother Harry (Hoolahan, The City Lights) on bass, the band entered the studio with long-time friend and legendary Australian producer Wayne Connolly in February 2019 to record the fruits of those Monday night sessions.

Like everything in life, when something is right there in front of you, tangible and touchable, you can’t imagine it going away. Like every band, Snakeheads thought they had more time: time to tinker; time to talk; time to record more songs. Tragically, as Pete’s diagnosis arrived and his health declined, that time went from infinite to finite. The seven songs they recorded together were close, close enough to give comfort and a sense of purpose after Pete died. Something to focus on, something to finish, for Pete.

The unending absence began. Music has always been cathartic and now it was traumatic. With Wayne, Kit and Harry, behind him, James began the journey of going through the recordings. Ivy League wanted to help and celebrate the life of its co-founder.

The first single to be released from the recordings is ‘Shit I Don’t Have Time For’. Ivy League’s Andy Cassell suggested Andrew Swayze from A. Swayze and the Ghosts sing the lead vocal. AS&TG were one of the last bands Pete signed to Ivy League Records and epitomised the music, style, and attitude that shaped his life since his early days in the suburbs with James.

Remember that feeling when you’re 15 and drop the needle on your new favourite record? It’s that same energy and passion that is encapsulated in Snakeheads’ debut single. Even the name Snakeheads is a nod to what they might have called their band as teenagers and a reference to Pete’s piercing ‘snake-eyes’. It’s also an audible testament to two best friends (and each other’s best men at their weddings) who both drew inspiration from and championed each other for life. A tangible celebration of their essence. They had each other. In cahoots till the end.

R3HAB, Timmy Trumpet and W&W bring back festival memories with "Distant Memory" (out now)

R3HAB, Timmy Trumpet, and W&W Team Up For Future Festival Anthem “Distant Memory”

by the partae March 14, 2021
written by the partae

Artists: R3HAB, Timmy Trumpet, W&W
Title: Distant Memory
Label: CYB3RPVNK
Release date: March 12, 2021

In an epic collision of forces, R3HAB partners with Timmy Trumpet and W&W for the new single “Distant Memory,” a big-room progressive house track that’s destined for future festival anthem status. Opening with haunting, singsong vocals and lullaby-esque melodies, it lulls the listener into a relaxed state before upping the ante with cinematic synths and a driving bassline, working into a goosebump-worthy drop. The contrast between the dreamy vocal verses and the intensified drop makes “Distant Memory” a standout of 2021 thus far, and we hope this isn’t the last collab we’ll see from R3HAB, Trumpet and W&W duo. R3HAB and Timmy Trumpet previously collaborated on 2020’s successful release “911.” Check out below what the artists had to say about the new release:

“Making music for a living is a special feeling, and to do it with friends is a next-level high. I’m excited to work with Timmy Trumpet on our second collab and have been looking for the right song to create with W&W for a long time. ‘Distant Memory‘ is going to be a festival hype builder, but what makes it special is the contrast between the dreamy dazed verses and the drop. Timmy, Willem, and Ward have great energy, which keeps the artistic process fresh and inspired. Hope you love it.” – R3HAB

“There’s nothing I love more than making music with my friends, and these guys are the best in the business. I’ve collabed with both W&W and R3HAB before but never on the same record and you can hear all 4 of us inside its elements. I can’t wait to drop this on stage with all 4 of us and blow up the dance-floor!” – Timmy Trumpet

“It was a real pleasure working with R3HAB and Timmy Trumpet on ‘Distant Memory.’ Both R3HAB and Timmy are really good friends of us which made it very easy going! We also feel it really combines the best of all of us as artists, and we hope you like listening to it as much as we liked working on it!” – W&W

Dutch/Moroccan DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the better part of the last decade. From his breakthrough hit remix of Afrojack, Pitbull and Ne-Yo‘s “Give Me Everything” to his dance anthems, such as “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” which have collectively amassed over 600M streams, to his collaborations with the likes of ZAYN, Andy Grammer, Sofia Carson, Timmy Trumpet and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most talented and forward-thinking artists in the game. He partnered with Spotify and GATTÜSO to create the first-ever official “mint” single release. In 2016 he founded his label CYB3RPVNK, which passed one billion streams on its catalog within the first two years since its inception. R3HAB himself continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with a variety of artists around the globe, experimenting with everything from hip-hop to pop through his collaborations. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, in 2021 R3HAB is continuing his journey among electronic music’s elite.

Sam Blacky Turns Up The Heat With Travel-Inspired House Single “Body.” Out Now on Stabby Records

by the partae March 14, 2021
written by the partae

Artists: Sam Blacky
Title: Body
Label: Stabby Records

Download / stream

After releasing her debut single “Too Late” just last month, the multitalented LA-based DJ/producer Sam Blacky returns with her follow-up release “Body,” a smoldering vocal house track that was inspired by Sam‘s world travels. Opening with beats that call to mind a frenzied tribal drum circle, Blacky incorporates ethereal vocals for a touch of complexity and contrast. When the deep, driving bassline kicks in, you’ll be taken to a beachside set in Mexico as the sun is going down and the dancefloor is heating up. “Body” perfectly reflects Sam‘s “A New World” video series, which includes her most recent upload from Sian Ka’an, a picturesque secluded peninsula in Mexico.

“‘Body‘ was 100% inspired by my love of travel & tropical, foreign destinations. Obviously, before COVID, what seems like so long ago, I would be in a different country almost every weekend and get exposed to all sorts of new styles of music. I took it all in like a sponge, I was obsessed with every new song I heard & I couldn’t believe how different all the sounds were. I collected bits and pieces from all over the world to culminate my own sound & take different aspects from every place I had been and combine them all together. The song went through tons of rounds of changes and edits because every time I would come home from another trip, I would have something more to add. I hope it comes across in the work, because it truly was inspired by the world.” – Sam Blacky

Samantha Black is a multitalented DJ/producer, model, and influencer professionally known as Sam Blacky. Originally from San Diego, Sam spent several years in Australia, where she first fell in love with producing music and performing live. Since moving back to Los Angeles, music and performing have taken a front seat in her life. In addition to her hectic modeling schedule, Sam has performed live across the world from 2017 to 2021, from Mexico to Ibiza to Bali, racking up over 120 gigs a year at some of the premier electronic festivals and clubs on the planet. With the global pandemic in 2020, Sam released a series of videos on Youtube called “A New World,” where she streamed live sets from some of her favorite places in Mexico, giving viewers a taste of vacation vibes even while staying safe at home. Before all the music, her modeling portfolio included brands such as Nike, L’Oréal, Galore, Marie Claire, Superdry, Guess, Sports Illustrated, Malibu, and Playboy, giving her a unique creative perspective to all types of cultures and styles to bring to her music. With the launch of Sam Blacky‘s label, Stabby Records, and her first releases, 2021 is set to be a breakout year for Sam as she expands her artistic brand.

Bill Jr. Jr.

by the partae March 14, 2021
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Vancouver, Canada.

How did you first start playing music?

Around the house as a lad, borrowing my stepdad’s guitar (much to his chagrin).

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

Right now, I’m on a little west coast island trying to get into a songwriting headspace. I noticed that I wasn’t sitting down to play or write much at home this past year. For whatever reason, I’m sure Covid has something to do with it, I haven’t felt that inspired to write any music. One thing that is missing as a result of the pandemic is getting to play with other people, which can be a major source of inspiration for me.

Your new album ‘Homebody’ came out recently, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The sound of the record had a lot to do with my other collaborators, namely the producer and bassist Daniel McNamara. I compose on guitar and write the lyrics and sing so we built around that foundation but he did a lot of the heavy lifting. The Athens crew of musicians and Daniel really helped give ‘Homebody’ it’s flare and colour.

I tried to write songs about my home (Vancouver) and about the people and places I was connected to there.

How did you go about writing the album?

I started by setting up a schedule to practice regularly and just stuck to it. I try not to really worry about each day’s productivity but rather trust that as long as I keep showing up, things will come to completion in time. That’s how I approached ‘Homebody’.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

Chase Park Transduction Studios in Athens, Georgia is where we recorded and the record was mastered by CPS Mastering in Vancouver.

How did you approach the recording process?

We scheduled everything really well because recording studios cost lots of money each day that you rent them. We went into tracking pretty well rehearsed so that was helpful. After the beds were down, we brought in other musicians for keys, back up vocals, etc. At this point we were happy to express what we wanted them to do but were also open to their unique style and interpretation of a part. I think that this approach helped ‘Homebody’ sound so full.

What did you find most rewarding and challenging during the creation of ‘Homebody’?

Geez…all these people coming together around an idea that I had for an album was very rewarding. Them being onboard felt great and was so so necessary. Challenges arose for me when I had to let go of being in control of something.

How has the reaction been from fans?

Pretty good I think. Everyone I chat with about it has nice things to say. It’s certainly my biggest effort to date and I think fans felt that leap from the previous two records. Although, any song or album you put out, no matter the budget or effort or scale, has its own magic.

Your new single ‘Blue’ is out now, what did this single mean to you?

I like this song because musically speaking, it’s a good example of an “off” take on a traditional style. The weird twangs and the bridge and the chords kind of make it strange enough to feel interesting to listen to I think. Plus it’s personally interesting to me because it’s about wandering around my neighbourhood, thinking thoughts and feeling feelings, two things I do quite often. So, it felt great to write a tune that captured my own subjective experience of something that is wholly regular and benign.

How did the concept for the ‘Blue’ music video come about?

I wanted to make a video that looked and felt different than the other videos I was seeing. Parameters can help me focus so I applied this logic to the location of where we would play: my van. In the van we could only do so much, which felt comforting and I think we all felt pretty loose as a result. And, any musician will tell you that the best music comes when you’re feeling loose.

Where and when did you film and who did you work with?

November 2019. It was kind of cold actually, we may have run the vehicle for heat in between takes. Matt Sawatzky made the video, he did a great job.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Aofie Nessa Frances, John Fahey, Cian Nugent, Rex Orange County.

What do you like to do away from music?

Body movement stuff, cooking, chit chatting the day away.

What’s planned for 2021?

We’ve got three more tunes from that same recording session in Athens that couldn’t fit on the record. So expect some more videos in unique settings.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Chips, my couch.
