Olivia Rodrigo – Guts World Tour – 17 October 2024, Sydney

by the partae October 18, 2024
written by the partae

“Seeing you tonight? It’s a bad idea, right?”. The ‘Guts’ tour officially hits Sydney as the gen z’s very own punk rock princess Olivia Rodrigo explodes onto stage in a sparkling ensemble, opening the night with her hit single ‘Bad Idea Right?’ from her sophomore album ‘Guts’, a song that perfectly set the scene for the night with the five words “maybe I can fix him?”.

Since her hit single ‘Driver’s License’, Olivia’s life leapt from Disney stardom (starring in the hit series ‘High School Musical the Musical the Series’) to becoming the powerhouse pop icon she’s known as today. Her debut album ‘Sour’ instantly became a chart-topping success, dominating streaming platforms and garnering the hearts of millions worldwide. Her lyrical mix of teenage heartbreak and melodrama mixed with the hard hitting, distorted instrumentals instantly made her be known as a force to be reckoned with amongst the upcoming new artists of her generation, a sound that was seamlessly transitioned into her live performances.

The night went on like a theatrical spectacle, with Olivia creating moments within each part of the night highlighted by dynamic set designs and carefully curated outfit changes. Songs like “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” and “Teenage Dream” offered us a rare glimpse into her own personal life, her super catchy and relatable lyrics echoing the room from the voices in the crowd. Lead single “Vampire” and “Making the Bed” gave us the signature Olivia ballads she’s known for while being backed by the absolutely gigantic wall of sound delivered from her band, while hard hitters “Pretty Isn’t Pretty” and “Traitor” showed us a more vulnerable side with themes that hit very close to home for a lot of the audience, seeing a piece of themselves in the sequin studded starlet.

Her set was broken into a mix of her upbeat and cheerful hits as well as some more intimate moments through her acoustic driven songs, with Olivia serenading the crowd through “Logical” and “Enough for You” sitting on the edge of the moon surrounded by a scene of stars. Her crowd engagement was next to none, the whole arena screaming in high pitch unison. Echoes of her lyrics bled through every seat, with “Déjà vu” and “Good 4 U” being personal standouts of the night, feet stomping and lungs running out of air as every person in the room (my posse and I very much included) yelled lyrics about revenge, heartbreak and longing so loud that by the end of the night, the only appropriate way to end the night was to look around and ask “Sydney, who hurt you?”

Olivia continues her performances at Qudos up until next Tuesday the 22nd of October – so on the chance that you luck out on Tixel, be sure to hit the glitter bar and be ready for a night full of beautifully chaotic catharsis.

Armand Hammer bring their strikingly unique and eclectic style to Australia for the first time in March, presented by Astral People & Handsome Tours. The incendiary combination of New York rappers Billy Woods and Elucid is untouchable: both artists having released acclaimed and forward-thinking solo albums this year alone, still coming together as a sum greater than its parts.

Few rap duos achieve what Armand Hammer achieve, boasting a legendary back catalog that provides a vivid cross section of each moment in underground hip-hop over the last decade. Collaborating regularly with artists such as Earl Sweatshirt, Pink Siifu, Quelle Chris, Moor Mother and R.A.P Ferreira, the duo have the taste of curators and the touch of true artists. On 2021’s seminal Haram, Armand Hammer join forces with a single producer on a record for the first time: no one better to challenge the unchallengeable than the legendary The Alchemist. The record sees all three artists embark upon uncharted territory, with Woods and Elucid entering more outlandish regions of storytelling and world-building, stirring pristine imagery and finding pockets in the increasingly eclectic production of The Alchemist.

Elucid and Billy Woods are fresh from solo ventures, with Elucid’s I Told Bessie and Woods’ Aethiopes and Church adding to their indelible catalog and solidifying both rapper’s legendary status with their incomparable output. Both artists feature extensively on the other’s record, making clear the sentiment of Armand Hammer exists wherever each rapper ventures into next.

Haram, and all other Armand Hammer albums, are there to be explored like a living museum. Their live show reveals more, and places you within their remote world like no listening experience can.

There is nothing on the landscape like Armand Hammer: missing this shows would be a disservice.

Praise for Telenova

“It’s rare for a band to arrive with such a polished and defined aesthetic this early” – NME, ★★★★

“Telenova have made an impact pretty quickly.” – Richard Kingsmill, triple j

“This is stupidly good. A sophisticated and utterly mesmerizing second release from one of 2021’s best new acts” – Bridget Hustwaite, triple j (Tranquilize)

“‘Cinematic indie pop at its finest. It sounds at once nostalgic while thoroughly modern, and is sure to get stuck in your head from the very first listen.” – Purple Sneakers

“A majestic debut from a band in its infancy… Telenova’s universe is so well realised you’ll be leaving footsteps in the band’s saturated deserts the moment you step through their portal” – NME, ★★★★

“This song really did take me by surprise when I heard it for the first time on Friday and I thought YES, kicking off next week’s BREAKING with this….” – Matt Wilkinson, Apple Music 1 (Tranquilize)

“Enchanting, alluring and instantly stylish stuff…” – Declan Byrne, triple j (Bones)

“Armstrong’s voice soars confidently above lush, grooving production, making for a truly captivating first offering.” – NME

“…the trio bring together a lifetime of musical experience condensed into genre-combining brilliance, where their overlapping worlds come together to create striking moments of hazy alt-electronic-R&B-esque versatility.” – Pilerats

Following a breakout 2021, Melbourne three-piece Telenova step confidently into 2022 with the Blue Valentine Tour, bringing their enigmatic live show across the country in their largest venues yet. The tour caps off a milestone debut for the band, with the release of their acclaimed EP Tranquilize and its ubiquitous single ‘Bones‘, which landed in triple j’s Hottest 100 this past weekend.

Tranquilize captivated audiences with its sweeping, cinematic aesthetic, garnering strong support from media, streaming platforms and radio across the globe. Their rendition of Madonna’s ‘Hung Up‘ for triple j’s Like A Version quickly became a fan favourite and Telenova found support for singles ‘Bones‘ & ‘Tranquilize‘ from BBC6, KCRW, Vogue Paris and NME, to name a few. The band then quickly sold out their November national tour, including six shows in their Melbourne hometown.

Ending the year with the release of the ‘Bones‘ music video, a nostalgia-soaked vignette shot between Melbourne and LA, Telenova went on to cement themselves as future festival favourites with acclaimed appearances at Wildlands, Beyond The City and Loch Hart Festivals. Their success is further bolstered by an appearance in triple j’s Hottest 100, with ‘Bones’ placing #91 in their countdown debut.

The Blue Valentine Tour kicks off March 4th at Wooly Mammoth in Brisbane, followed by Melbourne’s The Corner, Sydney’s Oxford Arts Factory, and Adelaide’s Jive.
