Sander van Doorn revisits his massive Riff together with David Tort
While his Purple Haze project may have been all guns blazing recently, Sander van Doorn’s output under his own name is still rolling on the regular. His latest opus: an addictive rework of his 2007 monster, Riff, brought up-to-date alongside the talented David Tort.
BUY/STREAM RIFF (SVD x DAVID TORT REMIX) HERE
Considerably slowing the pace of his tech trance monster, Sander’s remix of Riff with Tort boils down the essence of the track and brings it bang up-to-date. Wasting no time in getting down to business, the duo launch us into a filtered, distorted acid arpeggio that mimics the original ‘riff’, with a huge snare build and pitch risers building the energy. We slam down into a chugging groove wherein the acid growls harder and evolves as we move towards the break. Buzzing trancey arpeggios filter up and then fade back down as the build begins again, dizzying us with its maniacal energy.
This one was built for the stadiums, arenas and big festival stages. As you can see from this video on his Facebook page, the reactions have been huge. His collaborator on the track, David Tort, is one of Spain’s biggest DJ/producers, with releases on Spinnin’ Records, Axtone Records and Musical Freedom amongst others.
Sander recently embarked on his Purple Haze world tour, kicking off in Liverpool, UK with a seriously impressive audio-visual hybrid show. Dates for 2018 will soon be announced so keep your eyes peeled if you want to see his new creation in action.

Riff (SvD x David Tort remix) will be released via DOORN Records on November 27.
Sander van Doorn reveals debut album as Purple Haze: the mighty SPECTRVM
Sander Van Doorn proudly presents his debut album as Purple Haze, the darkly-tinged side project that he has brought back to the fore this year to great acclaim.
SPECTRVM ON SPOTIFY AND APPLE MUSIC
The genesis of Purple Haze actually stretches back some nine years, when Sander created a new moniker for “darker, more euphoric tracks”—such as Adrenaline and Eden. The project was resurrected by chance when Sander created a track last year that just naturally felt like a Purple Haze production. With encouragement from his wife—who clearly has excellent A&R sensibilities—he set about creating more tracks in that vein, and it soon became clear that there was a bigger picture to be brought to life. The phenomenal audio-visual live show came next and was soon massively in-demand, providing a springboard for what would become this album.
SPECTRVM is a stirring collection of emotive dancefloor moments, with a dramatic, cinematic sense pulsing through it that blends his loves of trance, techno, electro and progressive house is mesmerising fashion. Plum teases us with its tense, understated mood and crunchy, shuffling beats, delicate piano motifs twinkling over haunting chords before a pulsing synth line gives an indication of what’s to come. Fall In sets the album alight with its breezy indie dance vibe, and previous single Neiloj unleashes its fiery energy and razor-sharp lead. Light Me Up is another soaring torch song, more on the big room sound tip with huge riffs and epic breakdowns surrounding the glorious vocals.
The title track and Out Here lay on the dark trance energy in thick waves, Phaedraswitches up the rhythm to a chugging, heavily swung triplet pattern to keep things fresh and Kill Kitten returns to that moody, riff-fuelled sound. Prism (Eyes Wide Open) is one of the album’s most epic compositions, a dense collage of fizzing arpeggios and soaring pads. The Purple Haze remix of Sam Sharp’s Roundabout features as a climactic penultimate track, with manic 8-bit riffs unleashed over a throbbing offbeat bassline. Historia makes for a triumphant closer, with slo-mo beats underpinning a dizzying crescendo of melody and heady atmospheric layers before a huge build launches the track skywards for a euphoric finale.
“I think Purple Haze needs to exist next to Sander Van Doorn” he says, explaining the need for this creative yin and yang. “I need both. They make each other bigger.” This record is the sound of a producer falling in love with his roots and his creative process all over again. Long may this symbiotic relationship continue if this is what we can expect from it.

Sander van Doorn keeps his incredible musical output rolling with another absolute belter in the form of new single Mant Array, bordering trance and techno in his usual highly effective fashion.
A torrent of rasping plucked synths swells to fever pitch in the teasing intro, with a sleek electronic beat hammering into play soon after. The track ebbs and flows and as those synths continue to rise in intensity, creating a wall of sound which is bolstered by FX intensity. An epic lead line is teased deep in the depths of the track, revealing itself fully in the gargantuan breakdown.
The gently distorted electro melody is supplemented by jagged bass tones and a pitter-patter percussive rhythm, with the whole thing exploding into glorious life when the drop hits. The lead line phases and filters up and down as the various layers gel to make a thick crescendo of electronic noise.
Sander’s summer is well underway and this new anthem is causing havoc during his sets across the globe, with confirmed festivals for the coming season like Tomorrowland, UNTOLD, Dreamstate, Mysteryland and New Horizons, alternated with visits to Ibiza to christen the newly opened Hï Ibiza and for a few Blackout and Cream shows that will blow your mind in Amnesia.
Sander van Doorn ‘Mant Array’ will be released on June 19 via DOORN Records.
