Nahko Reveals ‘Hamakua’ Video

by the partae April 14, 2018
written by the partae

NEW ACOUSTIC EP
HAMAKUA
OUT APRIL 13TH

AN ACOUSTIC EVENING WITH
NAHKO & TREVOR HALL
STARTS THIS MONTH
WITH FIVE SOLD OUT UK DATES
INCLUDING LONDON’S OMEARA – APRIL 23RD

Singer/Songwriter Nahko has released the official music video for ‘Hamakua’. The single is the third from his debut solo album, My Name Is Bear, following the release of ‘Dragonfly’ and ‘Be Here Now’, and is the title track from his upcoming acoustic EP.

The video features never-before-seen home videos of Nahko from when he first began performing and originally wrote the song at age 18. Watch it here.

Nahko said of the video, “Finally, to Hamakua. The breath of the Creator. The birthing place of so many of the popular Medicine for the People songs. The Hamakua coast rolls along the rocky east side of the Big Island of Hawai’i, a place where I lived for nearly a decade; a place that served as the foundation for my awakening.

I teamed up with filmmaker Dom Walczuk again, the same director who made a number of our first music videos and documentaries on the Big Island, which now have millions of views, and we schemed to tell a reminiscent story of a bear, an island, and a community that grew a young cub and his music. We collected shots that Dom had in the vault from years back and patch worked them with VHS footage I had taken as a teenager of my first open mics and piano recitals. Then we laid foundation shots of who I am now on island, on horseback, in the ocean, to create a juxtaposition of ‘then and now’.

The result is a collage of time well spent and I’m proud to present this visual storyboard that nods to the magic found on the ‘piko’ of the Pacific and within the sounds of my personal journey as a young man. ‘Oi kau ka Iā, e hana i ola honua – while the earth still moves, do all you can. Eo!”

Nahko embarks on his solo acoustic tour later this month, with support from Trevor Hall. A hugely accomplished pianist and guitarist, the shows will bring a different interpretation to both his new solo work and his catalogue with Medicine For The People. Starting on the 18th in Dublin, the tour will include six UK shows, including a sold out date at London’s Omeara on the 23rd.

Over the last five years, Nahko And Medicine For The People have continued to gather dedicated members of their global tribe of likeminded fans as they spread their powerful musical message. They incorporate a variety of sounds, ranging from alternative roots to acoustic rock while promoting social change. Their album HOKA debuted at #10 on Billboard’s Rock Album Chart and #6 on the Alternative Album Chart.

Nahko’s solo album, My Name Is Bear, debuted on a number of Billboard charts on its release in October last year including Independent Albums (#11), Tastemakers (#14), Emerging Artists (#19), Top Album Sales (#43), and the Top 200 Albums. The album also premiered at #1 on iTunes and the headline tour in support of it boasted multiple sold-out dates both Stateside and in Europe.

My Name Is Bear is a 16-track collection that reflects the soul, authenticity and spirit that Nahko’s fans have come to know. It predates Nahko’s rise to iconic status among diehard fans of Medicine For The People. As he puts it, the album serves as a “prequel,” that artfully merges rustic acoustic guitars, upbeat energy, tribal flavors, fiery percussion, and ponderous lyrics.

At the end of the day, My Name Is Bear sets the stage for a whole lot more from Nahko.

Nahko announces solo acoustic tour with Trevor Hall

A SOLO ACOUSTIC EVENING WITH NAHKO  AND TREVOR HALL  APRIL 2018

Nahko has announced a UK and European solo acoustic headline tour, starting in April. Commencing in Dublin, it will include five UK dates, including a date at London’s Omeara.

Joining Nahko is singer/songwriter Trevor Hall whose music is a blend of roots and folk music, with hints of inspiration from India, which has led him to a series of sold-out tours and collaborations with artists such as Steel Pulse, The Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, Matisyahu, Michael Franti and Xavier Rudd.
The tour follows the success of Nahko’s debut solo album My Name Is Bear, released last year and featuring the single ‘Dragonfly’, which stars his close friend Paris Jackson in the video – watch here.

An intimate collection of tracks tracing Nahko’s formative years as an artist, it is a deeply personal album – the prequel to his work with Medicine For The People, and his most revealing work yet.

Nahko supported the album’s release with a sold-out run of dates in the UK in December, and now returns for this special acoustic tour. A hugely accomplished pianist and guitarist, the shows will bring a different interpretation to both his new solo work and his catalogue with Medicine For The People.

MORE INFORMATION ON TREVOR HALL
Raised on an island in South Carolina, Hall realised at a young age that music was more than just a passion – it was, rather, his life’s art. At sixteen, he recorded his first album, soon after which he left South Carolina for Idyllwild Arts Academy in California. There he studied classical guitar and was also introduced to the practices of yoga and meditation, which would greatly influence his life and his music.

Hall’s latest album, The Fruitful Darkness, became the #1 Kickstarter Music campaign of 2017 and features the new single ‘What I Know’. It will be released in in 3-song installments (quarterly) on specific lunar dates, culminating in a 15-song deluxe edition release, June 1st 2018.

Nahko reveals official video for ‘Be Here Now’

NAHKO

REVEALS OFFICAL VIDEO ‘BE HERE NOW’

WATCH HERE

After a triumphant return to the UK last week with another stint of sold-out shows including London Islington’s Assembly Hall, US sensation Nahko has released the official video for his latest single ‘Be Here Now’. The track is taken from his eclectic new album My Name Is Bear, which was released in October.

Featuring a montage of recent live footage alongside colourful, rich scenes of Nahko performing on a misty mountain top and playing a magnificent Elton John-style grand piano festooned with twinkling lights, the video perfectly captures Nahko’s quirky and positive personality and his band’s carefree and uplifting vibe.

Speaking about the piano, Nahko says, “We put the word out to our community that we were looking for an old upright piano that we could place outside for a base shot on this shoot. What we got was even cooler! Through the grapevine connections from some sisters in the medicine tribe, we found a fellow named Coda. He had this piano he had designed and built from scratch. Each key lights up a different string of LED lights and there are several settings for different displays. Coda pulled up to our location on Grizzly Peak in Berkeley on the side of the lookout road. We unloaded the piano and built it right there! It was pretty amazing, talk about community powered movements.”

He continues about the video, “Some of my favourite music videos catalog a journey into the life and times of an artist. It’s a window into their world that you don’t always get to see. I find them to be gems. We have a lot of those moments on the road and being able to capture them in a genuine light is the trick.”

‘Be Here Now’ follows the ethereal and beautiful video for ‘Dragonfly’ with his close friend Paris Jackson, and is a quirky, honest and effortlessly endearing offering which encompasses the free-spiritedness that Nahko’s fans have come to know.

With Nahko’s devoted following constantly growing in the UK and all his headline shows selling out yet again, Nahko will return to the UK for solo headline shows in April 2018.

Nahko releases hilarious new video for ‘Be Here Now’

REVEALS BRAND NEW SINGLE
‘BE HERE NOW’
WATCH THE LYRIC VIDEO HERE

UK & EUROPEAN HEADLINE TOUR

Nahko has revealed the brand new lyric video for his latest single ‘Be Here Now’. Taken from his eclectic new album My Name Is Bear, ‘Be Here Now’ reveals a new side to his sound with a gorgeously goofy new lyric video.

WATCH THE LYRIC VIDEO HERE

‘Be Here Now’ sees Nahko channelling Napoleon Dynamite-esque flair in a retro VHS-recorded home video, featuring killer interpretive dance moves whilst rocking a mullet and aviator frames.

Nahko says, “Aloha Tribe! I’m proud to announce the release of our lyric video for ‘Be Here Now’. I hope you get a lot of laughs out of it! I spent five days choreographing and rehearsing it and I think it came out smashingly.”

Bursting with vivacious energy and tender lyrics, the track rings with bright and triumphant funk horns and lush piano as Nahko enacts a heartfelt, hopeful love story.

Nahko continues, “Laughter is the best medicine and I wanted to make a lyric video that would bring that out in our global Tribe. So, why not make something that I’m SO not good at!  I am definitely not a dancer, but I can certainly be silly.  It was pretty hard to choreograph, I’ll be honest.  I didn’t know the first thing about it.  But, the third day in I began to block things and it came together by the end!  ‘Be Here Now’ was the perfect video to create a lyric video in different languages and let the laughter do the rest. Enjoy!”

Following the ethereal and beautiful video for ‘Dragonfly’ with his close friend Paris Jackson, ‘Be Here Now’ is a quirky, honest and effortlessly endearing offering that encompasses the free-spiritedness that Nahko’s fans have come to know.

This year, Nahko has embarked on a 30-date headline tour across 6 countries including the USA, Germany, Belgium, France, Holland, and he will be rounding off in the UK from November 30th, with a show at London Islington’s Assembly Hall on Friday December 1st. See full dates below.
