A woman who is very much on her own level, Maya Jane Coles has continued to demonstrate her distinctive ability to create beautifully crafted, forward thinking dance music. Remaining very much in charge of her own destiny, Maya presents her latest EP ‘Waves & Whirlwinds’, via her very own label, I/AM/ME.
Inaugural title track ‘Waves & Whirlwinds’ provides a melodic and celestial intro to an otherworldly EP project. Moving forward, former single ‘Don’t Leave’ introduces guitar-like synth lines and droning bass, building in pace and tempo to create an inescapable sense of anticipation. The listener is invited to stay tuned for the ensuing transmission.
With an eerie and sinister feel, third track and single ‘Other Side’ forms the peak of the EP; brimming with emotion and euphoria. Elevating a bass driven house rhythm, with peculiar, angelic vocals. The listener is guided through a universe of twinkling synth lines and grungy dub elements. Onwards and upwards into ‘Visionary’, we are transported into a world of optimism. Coles lays out uplifting, driving synth chords peppered with signature droning dubby bass and subtle elements of funk.
Leading into ‘Isolate’, Coles plunges into the depths of her darker side. Signing off the EP with deep and dark, broken percussion and distorted vocal sounds, manifesting in a wholly sinister, downtempo experience.
Rounding off 2018, ‘Waves & Whirlwinds’ EP provides an interplanetary journey through the many moons of Maya Jane Coles’ boundary defying sound. The EP comes in the wake of an iconic moment for Maya, dropping EP single ‘Don’t Leave’ unannounced, alongside brand-new material from her darker alias, Nocturnal Sunshine. Accruing support everywhere from Rinse FM to Reprezent Radio as well as continued BBC Radio 1 plays from Annie Mac, Diplo and Mistajam, along with a US Billboard premiere, Maya Jane Coles continues to keep her bar firmly raised.

London’s award-winning, resolutely independent DJ/producer/artist Maya Jane Coles returns with a new music video for ‘Darkside’ directed by The Fashtons – the third single to be taken from her critically acclaimed sophomore album ‘Take Flight’.
Having set the scene by directing the stunning video for ‘Weak’, London-based directing duo The Fashtons return to create the next chapter ‘Darkside’, doing so with a team of close friend artists. Real names Ben Ashton and Fiona Garden, take the viewer deep into the same meticulously crafted subconscious realm that we saw a glimpse of in ‘Weak’.
For Darkside, Ben and Fiona have built on the same ethereal world we saw in ‘Weak’ consisting of striking, dreamlike polyhedric shapes in which a ‘Blank Conscious Being’ tries on masks of the faces of those who live in Maya’s waking world. Among flying polyhedric shapes – created Ben and Fiona’s independent team of craftspeople – the ‘being’ observes ritualism’s in an enchanting video that matches Maya’s equally captivating music.
Ben Ashton explains his use of the Polyhedron environment in the video: “Polyhedric shapes are beautifully simple but remarkably stable structures – the perfect blend of art and mathematics. The polyhedron we used in this project is called an Icosidodecahedron – I’m particularly drawn to the star shapes that you can see around the pentagons, and if you look at it from a different angle you can see a skull shape.”
Ben based the masks that we see throughout the video on portraits of people who Maya has collaborated with. Ben Says: “I took a facial element of each of the subjects, like the eyes from one person, the mouth from another, to use as a base. I then let my imagination run freely in several different directions at once. Each mask represents a different element of Maya’s subconscious so the more weird and wonderful they are the better. I was particularly interested in putting masks onto the masks as it struck me as meta, layers on layers.”
The otherworldly imagination of The Fashtons and their small team of artists including craftsperson Natalia Latyszonek, fabric artist Rachel Freire, performer Georgie Bee and make up designer Kristina Vidic, round off Maya’s latest release in vivid, mesmerizing style.
From playing the world’s greatest venues, supporting Depeche Mode, releasing mix compilations for DJ Kicks and Fabric Live, remixing The XX, Ella Fitzgerald, Bonobo, leading campaigns for Doc Martens, and being sampled for Nicki Minaj’s mega hit ‘Truffle Butter’, Maya Jane Coles is the independent artist at the very summit of her game.
Maya Jane Coles will release a new EP entitled ‘Darkside’, featuring self-crafted singer-songwriter Chelou, marking the third EP to be taken from the independent DJ/producer’s sensational new double LP ‘Take Flight’, heralded by DJ Mag as her “landmark album”.
‘Darkside’ continues Maya’s unstoppable streak of standout releases. ‘Won’t Let You Down’ and ‘Weak/Werk’, the first two EPs from Take Flight, received worldwide critical acclaim from FADER, Wonderland, Mixmag, Complex, The Huffington Post and many others, while Radio 1’s Pete Tongmade ‘Trails’ his “Essential New Tune”.
The EP will see Maya rekindle her close working relationship with singer-songwriter Chelou who brought further melancholy to Maya’s Nocturnal Sunshine alias on the 2015 single “Believe”. Maya went on to produce the mysterious London artist’s recent single ‘Halfway to Nowhere’, which has racked up an impressive 5 million streams on YouTube alone with a video illustrated by artist Polly Nor.
Title track ‘Darkside’ is hazily surreal, combining slow-motion beats with Chelou’s pensive vocals. ‘Trails’ is a sleek voyage of hypnotic sampling and celestial textures while ‘Passing Me By’ introduces fiery energy next to shimmering chords and pulsating percussion, showing Maya’s distinctive production touch.
Maya Jane Coles is a resolutely independent artist who writes, produces, engineers, and creates the artwork for all her music. From winning multiple awards, touring the world’s greatest venues, supporting Depeche Mode to releasing mix compilations for DJ Kicks, Fabric Live, remixing The XX to Ella Fitzgerald to Bonobo, leading campaigns for Doc Martens or being sampled for Nicki Minaj’s mega hit ‘Truffle Butter’, Maya Jane Coles is at the very summit of her game.
Maya Jane Coles will release three more remixes of “Weak”, following her already hugely acclaimed sophomore album – “Take Flight”.
First up is fast rising UK underground talent Boxia(Drumcode, Waveform) who transforms Maya’s hypnotic original into an unyielding mid-set cut, full of heady drums and fiery synths.
Next, Leeds duo and monthly Rinse FM presenters Mak & Pasteman (Lobsterboy, Unknown To The Unknown,) continue the energy levels with their signature no-nonsense house sound, offering a melodic, bass-heavy reimagining of ‘Weak’.
Rounding off the remix package in sublime style is close friend and longtime collaborator Wax Wings who injects kaleidoscopic textures alongside brooding bass lines and detuned vocals, striking a fine balance between unsettling and tranquility. Providing a remix for Maya previously on her Nocturnal Sunshine project and opening a string of shows for her, Wax Wings brings a close and intimate feel to the remix.
“Take Flight” has already turned heads for being Maya’s best work to date while her long-established tie to the underground consistently sees her music reimagined by the most exciting artists.
