Henry Green

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
Bristol. There are a load of amazing artists emerging here at the moment. I think my favourite Bristolians at the moment are Tamu Massif and Harvey Causon.

How did you first start playing music and what influences you to keep playing?

I guess it started when I got a guitar for Christmas when I was 8 or 9. I didn’t play it properly for a few years, but in my teenage years I started to song write and then eventually produce. It was the discovery of production that really triggered something and made me realise that I could create whatever I wanted to and express myself. I think that’s what influences me to keep creating; that feeling when you produce something completely unique and unexplainable. You’re not quite sure where it came from but the release of ideas and emotion feels overwhelmingly special.

Your new Album is out, where and when did you record?

It was recorded over 2017, in many different locations. The majority of the record was produced in my bedroom, but I worked on a few songs with Nico Rebscher at his studio in Funkhaus, Berlin. We spent many late nights soaking up the ambience of the building and layering up textures and synths. I mixed the rest of the album with my best friend Jack Shuter back in Bristol, who I worked with on my previous EP.
What equipment and programs did you use?

I work from Logic Pro X, but I prefer to track sounds outside of the box, rather than use too many VSTs. My Korg Minilogue was central to the album’s sound, but I was also fortunate enough to have access to synths like the Korg Poly 800, Minimoog Voyager and crucially the Yamaha CS-60, which Jack and I sampled and built a polyphonic patch in Maschine. Nico and I were also able to track some Rhodes at a studio in Camden, for the single ‘Another Light’. Despite the extensive synths and production, I still wanted to capture that intimate feeling, so most of the songs feature nylon guitar and my girlfriend’s mum’s piano.
What influenced the sound of the album?

I think the main influence was probably what had come before. I’ve spent a few years trying to understand the sound I want to create and find new ways of expressing that sound, so this album is another step closer to that sound that I’m always chasing. I wanted to create a collection of songs that felt familiar; natural and reflective of my experiences and feelings, but I simultaneously wanted it to feel exciting and unknown to me. I still don’t understand how these songs were formed or why they sound like they do, but they evoke new feelings each listen and intrigue me, and I think that’s what I wanted.

How was your experience in Berlin whilst you were recording?

It was great! Funkhaus houses some really amazing people. I couldn’t help but feel inspired and driven to create within it’s walls. Nico and Jack’s energy and passion to create special sounds really inspired me and the songs would feel really different if they hadn’t been created out there, with those people.

Favourite track on the album and why?
It’s probably ‘Stay Here’. It feels like a big release. I think it’s a song that could’ve easily felt uncomfortable to me with that feeling of the isolation in the lyrics and production, but it somehow makes me feel at ease. I think it’s the clearest example of the music I want to make.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment… Nils Frahm, Four Tet, The/Das, Kelly Lee Owens, Anenon, Ryuichi Sakamoto.

How do usually go about writing lyrics / music and combining the two?

They’re quite separate. My lyrics are always formed like poems, with lines added intermittently over weeks. Whereas with the production, I’m constantly editing and experimenting. I definitely spend most of my time building a mood with the instrumentation and production, which will trigger some imagery or feeling, and eventually influence the lyrics.

Please tell us how you prepare for each live show:

It’s always interesting approaching the live show, as I’m floating somewhere between electronic and acoustic instruments. The songs are produced in an electronic way, but that doesn’t always translate too easily live, so a few songs have to be taken apart and rebuilt for a live setting. Fortunately, I have an amazing group of musicians who help to do that. I want to keep an electronic spine to the set, but ensure that everything around it feels intimate and human. I need to try and connect with people live in a different way to how I’d connect with them on record.
What do you have planned for 2018?
I’m working on new music at the moment, both for my solo stuff and for my side project Corre. I think my focus is definitely still on producing new material, but I’m equally excited to get out and play some shows wth the band in April/May!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

The Gallimaufry on Gloucester Road or Pinkmans on Park Street (both in Bristol).

HENRY GREEN shares new video “Another Light”. Debut LP ‘Shift’ due March 30th via Akira Records! UK tour dates announced! Inbox x

– Shares new video “Another Light“
– Debut LP ‘Shift’ due March 30th via Akira Records
– UK tour dates announced

With his debut LP ‘Shift‘ set for release March 30th via Akira Records, emerging electronic producer Henry Greenis sharing a beautiful new video for his recent single “Another Light”.

Shot in South Wales & directed by Hattie Ellis, Henry explained the process of making the video, “We shot the video  with a couple of our best friends, Maisie Walker and Vanessa Lloyd. We were desperate to film at the location after taking a trip there a few months prior, and ‘Another Light’ really felt like it harmonised with the location. We just played with the imagery created in the lyrics; the textures, the lights and hazy scenes described.”

Director Hattie added “We wanted to reflect the lyrical content in an ambiguous way through the shots. With the change in light comes a change in feeling and pace of the film, but there is no visual narrative to allow the viewer to project their own stories onto the film or just enjoy it visually.”

Wander the riverbank of Berlin’s Köpenicker Chaussee for long enough, and you’ll find a grand cold war nuclear facility, or what looks like one. It was here, at the beautiful, eerie Funkhaus – actually a radio broadcast site built in the 1950s – that rising Bristol electronic artist Henry Green wrote part of his new album.

The main theme of the album for Henry Green is movement.  He explains “We’re constantly moving in some manner, at some pace… whether its physically or emotionally. This year was all about progression and change for me, so I found myself constantly gravitating towards that idea of movement in my lyrics. ‘Shift‘ was a word that just kept reappearing when writing the tracks, whether I was describing the structures of the tracks, the instrumentation/arrangement and obviously, the lyrics. I wanted to exhibit a feeling of constant movement in the album and that idea that every element is constantly shifting, but at a variety of paces.”

The result is a sound both subtle and cinematic that combines intimate, confessional songwriting with an obsession with electronics that has built in him since age 16. ‘Shift’ is laden with delicate, complex electronic sounds that show a maturity far beyond Green’s age of 22.

“I’m inspired by the production of artists like Four Tet, Mount Kimbie and Bonobo. I love the collision of acoustic and synthetic sounds in music, completely contrasting elements that somehow work in harmony,” says Green. “I’m also a huge fan of Jon Hopkins, Ólafur Arnalds, and Nils Frahm (“my dream collaborator”). The use of space in their music is so powerful; each sound somehow isolated, unobscured and left to be appreciated.” It’s a different artist he’s most associated with, though – Norwegian production megastar Kygo, who in 2013 remixed Green’s cover of MGMT hit ‘Electric Feel’ to the tune of 10m SoundCloud streams.

Green has two cult adored EPs, over 8m Spotify streams and shows with London Grammar and Nick Mulvey to his name. With his debut album ‘Shift’, set for release on March 30th, recorded in both Bristol & Berlin and co-produced by Nico Rebscher and mixed by Jack Shuter, he’s continuing to push the boundaries of his sound, drifting further away from the guitar that formed the epicentre of his early songs and leaning heavier icy synth shimmers. “I’ve become obsessed with the idea of creating atmosphere. As I learnt more about production,” he explains, “I found it easier to translate my ideas and find new ways to create the sounds that would reflect my lyrical style.”

Henry Green will tour later this year with a headline London show already announced for Corsica Studios on 3rd May. More live dates will be announced soon.

HENRY GREEN

by the partae February 20, 2018
written by the partae

Ahead of his debut album release on March 30th via Akira Records, Bristol-based electronic artist Henry Green has shared two new tracks from the album. “Without You“ & “Shift” are streaming online now.

Henry spoke about the two tracks, explaining the meanings behind them. “‘Without You’ is about being completely absorbed by someone, that hazy feeling of being so enveloped in the present, that you just neglect any external distractions. The track was created at home in Bristol, but heavily inspired by a trip to Paris”

Speaking about “Shift” he said “It’s all about movement. The whole album is based around this theme, but none more so than this track. It felt like a very natural theme to explore and one that I constantly gravitated towards when writing lyrics or describing the evolution of a track. Lyrically, ’Shift’ refers to the sensation of falling, unaware of when you’ll reach an end but enjoying the loss of control and feeling of weightlessness.”

Listen to & “Shift” & “Without You” here:

INTRODUCING: HENRY GREEN. Rising electronic artist shares new single “Stay Here”. New album coming next year.

INTRODUCING: HENRY GREEN

– Shares new single “Stay Here“
– New album coming soon via Akira Records

Today we’re excited to announce that rising Bristol-based electronic artist Henry Green is sharing his new single “Stay Here”, which is streaming online now and available via Akira Records.

Wander the riverbank of Berlin’s Köpenicker Chaussee for long enough, and you’ll find a grand cold war nuclear facility, or what looks like one. It was here, at the beautiful, eerie Funkhaus – actually a radio broadcast site built in the 1950s – that Henry Green wrote his new single, and you can tell. Like the building in which it was born, “Stay Here” is both beautiful and eerie: a feather-gentle lament full of hushed vocals and electronic ripples, about isolation and fighting for a sense of direction, by an artist whose only direction seems up.

In the words of Henry himself:

’”Stay Here’ was created out of frustration from a loss of direction. I wanted to create a feeling of isolation and fragility in the production but gently move in to a warmer, more uplifting space as the track developed. The foundations of the song were built alone in Bristol, but the instrumentation was built up in Berlin with producer Nico Rebscher. It was really special to share such a delicate track with Nico and to see it evolve and gain confidence.”

“I write a lot about movement – both physical and emotional,” says Green who, aged 22, has two cult adored EPs, over 8m Spotify streams and shows with London Grammar and Nick Mulvey to his name. “Music is an escape for me, so I try and escape to somewhere less chaotic and slower in pace when I’m creating.” The result is a sound both subtle and cinematic (he dreams of one day scoring for film) that combines intimate, confessional songwriting with an obsession with electronics that has built in him since age 16.

“I vividly remember a friend showing me ‘Swing Tree’ and ‘Osaka Loop Line’ by the Vampire Weekend side project Discovery and it just blew my mind,” says Green. “Its sounds were so refreshing and exciting. The same friend showed me Jai Paul’s ‘BTSTU’ and it had the same effect.” Also among his inspirations are Jon Hopkins and Erased Tapes favourites Olafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm (“my dream collaborator”). It’s a different artist he’s most associated with, though – Norwegian production megastar Kygo, who in 2013 remixed Green’s cover of MGMT hit ‘Electric Feel’ to the tune of 10m SoundCloud streams.

As fans continue to discover the soft, raw emotion of his previous EPs, 2015’s Slow and 2017’s Real, Green is looking ahead. Having recently played successful shows at The Lexington in London & Reeperbahn Festival and with a debut album, tentatively titled Shift, set for release in 2018 and co-produced by Nico Rebscher and mixed by Jack Shuter, he’s continuing to push the boundaries of his sound, drifting further away from the guitar that formed the epicentre of his early songs and leaning heavier icy synth shimmers. “I’ve become obsessed with the idea of creating atmosphere. As I learnt more about production,” he explains, “I found it easier to translate my ideas and find new ways to create the sounds that would reflect my lyrical style.”

“I’m also doing a few shows and hopefully collaborating with a few different people along the way,” he says of the near future. “I mainly get excited about the creation side, as opposed to playing live, but I am looking forward to getting out there and sharing the new tracks in a live environment.” His stunning new single may be called “Stay Here” and his sound may be one of calming stillness, but make no mistake, Henry Green is going places.
