After the release of their debut single “City Boy” last month Calpurnia have truly arrived with the song being streamed more than 2 millions times and hitting number 1 on the Global Viral Spotify chart. Now the 4-piece, all friends from Vancouver, led by Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things &It) are ready to announce their debut EP. Scout is everything you’d want it to be, 6 infectious guitar driven tracks, influenced by everyone from Mac DeMarco to the Rolling Stones. To celebrate the announcement Calpurnia have dropped another song“Louie,”check it out below.
Lead guitarist Ayla Tesler-Mabe notes, “”Louie” is the lively and colourful product of a studio transformation. This track features Colin Croom on piano, with himself and Cadien Lake James contributing the choir-boy harmonies and backing vocals that come in as the song builds. It was definitely the intention to record a song that sounded as live as possible, and we sincerely hope that this energy comes through to the listener when you listen to this track. Louie was an absolute blast to record. Finn recorded his guitar and vocals simultaneously to capture exactly what he was feeling in the moment, and this track finally gave Ayla the chance to play slide guitar, as well as the Keith Richards inspired lead you hear at the end. Jack’s groovy bass line keeps the song moving along until Malcolm comes crashing in on the drums. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a guy who always leaves his partner, and though she does everything she can to hold down the fort at home, he never shows up. The guitar solo is meant to convey the longing she feels for him to come home, and the loneliness she feels without him at her side.”
Calpurnia recently announced 2 shows, one in Atlanta and the second in LA. Both sold out immediately but watch this space for more dates.
Calpurnia‘s story is how teenage rock dreams are meant to unfold: four friends, all raised on a healthy diet of The Beatles, Nirvana and David Bowie, and a deep love for their respective instruments, retreat one day to a basement and begin jamming together. They cut their teeth on some cover songs and then, with just enough confidence and a dose of adolescent enthusiasm, they write and record their own tunes. And the results are nothing short of stunning.
“It was kind of destined to be,” guitarist and vocalist Finn Wolfhard says of the almost serendipitous genesis of the rough-and-tumble Vancouver-based indie-rock foursome he formed with three of his now-closest friends. “We all just really clicked. And when I’m passionate about something,” the singer-guitarist adds of Calpurnia, who will release their self-titled debut EP on Pod/Inertia Music later this year, “I like to get it done as quickly as I can. There’s not a lot of wasting time. I love just going for it. Go big or go home.”
Today, the band has given us a taste of what is to come from their debut EP which was recorded in Chicago this past November with Twin Peaks‘ frontman Cadien Lake James serving as producer. The video for ‘City Boy‘ was directed by Josiah Marshall, bassist from Whitney, who captured the band while they were making their record.
Lead guitarist Ayla Tesler-Mabe had this to say about the video: “This video is a look into a day in the studio working on our record with Cadien, filmed and edited by our now great buddy Josiah Marshall. Hopefully this video can convey how much fun this whole experience was for all of us, and that this music is really just the product of a bunch of friends who love music coming together to create something. We also want to thank Jason Bartell for creating the character you see here in this video, and who you might see more of soon. Lastly, thank you to Martin McPherson for making our video so much more colourful with his animation. This truly has been a team effort, and there is no team of truly talented individuals we’d rather be working with.”
Director Josiah Marshall added, “When I found out my friends Cadien and Andrew were recording this project I was excited to come in and shoot some video and stills. Ayla, Jack, Malcolm, and Finn were fun to hang with and it was nice to watch their recording process as talented individuals. I’m excited to see what’s next for these kids.”
Rolling Stone recently caught up with Calpurnia at their sold-out show at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade. Watch the interview below.
The band – which in addition to Wolfhard includes lead guitarist Tesler-Mabe, a six-string prodigy whose bedroom-shredding viral videos have earned her legions of fans on social media, bassist Jack Anderson and drummer Malcolm Craig – all grew up within walking distance of one another. But it took Wolfhard – best known as one of Hollywood’s hottest young actors thanks to his role as Mike Wheeler on Netflix‘s hit series Stranger Things – meeting Craig on the set of Canadian punk rockers PUP‘s ‘Guilt Trip‘ music video for things to finally spring into motion. In short order, the pair met Tesler-Mabe at a music summer camp, and she quickly introduced them to Anderson, her close childhood friend and bassist. “And as soon as we started rehearsing it was just insane,” Anderson says of the quartet’s instant personal and musical chemistry. “It was kind of unbelievable. Like a gift.” Once they played their first official gig together, it was a done deal. “We had all the adrenaline we needed,” Craig says. Where they’d previously played cover songs, “after the response we got,” Craig notes, “we were like, ‘Let’s record some of our own music!’“
