After a much talked about debut, Labryinto Festival is back on the stunning Coast of Guanacaste in Costa Rica this New Year. From December 28th to January 3rd it offers a unique and escapist mix of world class music music, art, gastronomy, wellness and plenty of strong sustainability initiatives with headlines such as Tale of Us, Keinemusik, Lee Burridge, Damian Lazarus, DJ Tennis, Carlita, Trikk and many more.
Musically, Labryinto is a forward thinking line-up with globally renowned melodic techno pair Tale of Us bringing their always evocative sound. The esteemed German crew Keinemusik also line up with their enchanting house sounds, and All Day I Dream label and party head Lee Burridge is the perfect man to summons some motherly and shamanistic house in the jungle, as is the notorious musical wizard and Crosstown boss Damian Lazarus. Add in the widescreen electronic output of Life And Death’s DJ Tennis, Turkish DJ, multi instrumentalist and producer Carlita and Trikk and you have a surefire winner.

4B is back on HARD Recs with another track full of good vibes and plenty of beats, this time with a remake of “Knock On Wood” by Amii Stewart in collaboration with rising Miami-based star, producer Mikey Barreneche. With all the elements of a proper dancefloor filler – from a dynamic bassline, catchy vocal riff as an ode to the known original, and trumpet instrumentals – their new release is simply born for the festival and club scene. 4B applies his production skills to make a fresh and fun version of “Knock On Wood” in the form of “LOUDER” that will vibe with both veteran fans of the original song and those who have never heard it before. 4B‘s summer was pretty intense, from his own sold out “4B & Friends” event at LA‘s Hollywood Palladium to remixes for Dillon Francis, Method Man, to his single with Shaq. On the other hand, Mikey Barreneche has already been supported by the likes of Tiësto, Diplo, Timmy Trumpet, Wax Motif, Thomas Gold, AC Slater, and more.
“‘Knock On Wood‘ by Amii Stewart is such a classic. I was so pumped when Mikey hit me with this idea. This one is super fun to play out live. I’ve played it at most of the festivals I was at this year, so excited to finally have it out on HARD Recs.” – 4B
“I’m excited to see how this generation responds to the track. A lot of younger people may have never even heard the original sample, so it will be a cool thing for them to later find the record ‘Knock On Wood‘ and say, ‘oh, wow, that’s where they got that sound from.’ I’m happy to finally be releasing with Insomniac/HARD Recs. I have been sending demos for a couple of years, so to get a release is always something special.” – Mikey Barreneche
Robert McKeon Jr., better known as 4B, may only be 29 years old, but he’s already been honing his musical skills for nearly half of his life. The American DJ and producer has relentlessly pursued his signature sound and vision, garnering support from some of the industry’s legends like Skrillex, DJ Snake, Diplo and Tiësto for his unique sound and meticulous production style. His trademark single was “Pop Dat” with Aazar in 2015; which became a quintessential trap anthem upon its release in 2015 and quickly evolved into a festival staple recognized all over the world. Since its release, it has become one of the most played trap songs in 2016, putting 4B firmly on the map as one to be watched in the dance music scene. Since then, his talent for boundary-pushing production translated easily into a finely tuned ear for remixes, including one for Fetty Wap‘s “My Way” with Flosstradamus and DJ Snake‘s “Middle,” which was officially released through Interscope. 4B has also earned himself somewhat of a cult following from his electric live performances, which include his wildly popular set at EDC Las Vegas right before ZEDD, where he brought out Soulja Boy as a special guest. 4B continues to evolve and mature as an artist, and we are excited to see what the next wave of his career brings.
Born and raised in Miami, FL. Mikey Barreneche‘s music is heavily influenced by Latin and hip-hop sounds. His biggest influences are Headhunterz, Swedish House Mafia, Kayzo, DJ Snake, Diplo, and Carnage. After finishing a career as a college athlete, he decided to dive straight into music. What he learned growing up as an athlete has so much to do with the way he approaches the music business. Bursting onto the scene in 2018 originally making hard dance, he has seemingly crossed over into almost every other genre in electronic music. His work ethic in the studio and dedication to the craft of DJing is what sets him apart from the pack and is why he is one of the most respected artists coming out of Miami. He has had releases on Space Yacht, Bite This!, Terminal Underground, Hood Politics, Maca, and Autektone. The future is looking bright with some big label releases coming up in the new year. Mikey‘s goal is to give everyone an escape from reality. Ultimately he would love to be remembered as a great person and someone to model a career after.

With La Nina hitting Melbourne in full force, it didn’t deter fans from attending the first of two Melbourne shows from heavyweight rockers Butterfly Effect. This was a tour that was put on hold since the pandemic. But with their recent release of “IV”, their first album in 14 years, it was an opportunity to showcase new material amongst their classics.
Prog metal favourites Caligua’s Horse opened the night with tight musical precision and to a very receptive crowd. Thornhill had quite a number of fans at the show tonight wearing the band’s t-shirts. This is a metal band that has escalated in popularity. The band delivered an energetic live set spearheaded by the charismatic frontman Jacob Charlton as they worked through their catalog including “Raw”, “View from The Sun”, and “Casanova”.
To the IV album atmospheric opener “IV” playing, the crowd roared when Butterfly Effect took to the stage launching into “Dark Light” and the catchy “Window and the Watcher”. When someone yelled “Great to see you back boys!”, everyone was in agreement that it had been too long between shows.
To the heavy grind of “Always”, the crowd sang along in unison to singer Clint Boge. His theatrical mannerisms further shifted and shaped the mood for each song from the riff laden “Nil By Mouth“ , the melodic “Gone” to the bass line hook “Everyone Runs”. He paused a few times to thank the fans and acknowledge his gratefulness to be able to do live shows again.
The band returned for a brief encore which included the intricate new track “Visiting Hours” and tying the night with fan favourite “Reach”. The band is never one to take off after the show. They stuck around to chat to fans so in Clint’s words they “would leave the show feeling fully satisified.” They sure did!

In the words of Cut Copy member, Dan Whitford …
“We are very excited to be playing our first headline show in Melbourne in over 5 years. As a band we started out here and cut our teeth playing local gigs so now that half of the band lives overseas and most of our touring is spent in other countries it definitely holds special significance to us to return to and play to a home crowd. We’re also excited to be performing some current favorites of Melbourne’s music scene in Glass Beams and Rona. Both have been real highlights of the past year and a half for me. So as well as being a rare opportunity for us to play in Melbourne, with those support acts it promises to be an excellent night of music from start to finish.”

Alt Fiction have unleashed ‘Why Are You Still Here?’, a defiant, roaring single that’s injected with juicy pop hooks and enormous riffs. It’s the most energetic cut to-date from the Queensland-based brothers Mitch, Matt, and Will Tyler; and it serves as a first taste of their forthcoming debut EP. Following on from their anthemic track ‘Yesterday’, ‘Why Are You Still Here’ is an extension of that sound, delivering a single that’s simultaneously ambitious and familiar. Receiving its first play on triple j’s Home & Hosed, the new single feels like a slight sonic throwback to indie pop bands of the late 2000’s early 2010’s, it’s a danceable, bold statement destined to be the energetic peak of their live shows. It was at British group The 1975’s live show that the trio came up with the song’s idea. During their show, after an interlude video was played featuring young climate activist Greta Thunberg, a group of concertgoers started booing.
“If you can’t put down your fucking phone then why are you still here?” they sing pointedly in the rousing chorus over a beat that’s both angry and liberated. Coincidentally the pop groove of ‘Why Are You Still Here?’ is reminiscent of The 1975’s most upbeat moments. It’s an influence that has never really crept through their music before, but it was an intentional move to begin this new era with something “different”. While the song shines with a sort of masterful polish you’d expect from some of the biggest bands around, Alt Fiction have kept the process proudly DIY. It was written in the “infamous caravan by the beach”, the birthplace of most of their songs, and produced by frequent collaborator Chris Collins (Middle Kids, Skegss). Accompanying the release of the single, is their DIY official video which the trio reveal, “we don’t consider ourselves filmmakers by any means – we’ve sort of ended up making music videos out of necessity and just out of pure luck they turn out alright. “ $0, 2 days and an iPhone – those are the ingredients that make-up their latest visual creation. “We’ve made music videos ourselves before but this one was the most ambitious for sure. We knew we wanted to involve the carnival because it’s so colorful and wild. We pretty much just dressed up in the brightest vintage clothing we could find on Depop and then ran around for two days just acting like idiots. It’s pretty embarrassing trying to film a music video at a carnival tbh – most of the footage didn’t even make the cut,” shares Alt Fiction |
Intimacy has been key to their musical process since the early years. They began writing songs together in rural South-East QLD around the age of 12. Since then, they have been through plenty of iterations, moving from covering punk songs to their official debut single in 2020 ‘All My Friends’.
With four releases under their belt now, the band is taking flight, reaching audiences far beyond their humble beginnings. They’ve crashed into the scene with hooks as tight as The Strokes and Phoenix and energy as raucous as early Arctic Monkeys or Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
In a short period of time, the band have picked up some impressive accolades. They have been the triple j Unearthed Feature Of The Week and secured slots on Rage. They are also catching the attention of streamers, featuring on illustrious playlists like Spotify’s New Music Friday and Indie Arrivals and Apple Music’s The New Rock and Roadtrip Weekend. With close to 500,000 streams to their name, they’re ready to inflate those numbers with a brand-new EP.
‘Why Are You Still Here?’ fires the starting gun on their most exciting era yet. The incoming EP is made up of songs that highlight “the absolute best of Alt Fiction,” in the band’s words.
