Playing over the next few weeks at Trafford Park will be the likes of Patrick Topping, Solardo, Yousef, Josh Butler B2B Bontan, Mr Scruff, Norman Jay MBE, Enzo Siragusa, Darius Syrossian, Steve Lawler, Alan Fitzpatrick, Kreature and East End Dubs amongst many more. Word has now spread nationwide about Social Avenue, which has set a benchmark for socially distant but hugely enjoyable days and nights out. Each event finds you set up with your social bubble at your own table, while a world class ‘Void Tri Motion’ sound system supplies the sounds. On-site bars are all fully stocked and there is a wealth of delicious street food, and further entertainment comes from cameo areas where you can set up the perfect social media selfie shot, all while saying at a safe distance. Of course, one-way systems will be in place in toilet areas, bars and around the site to keep you safe, and face masks and coverings are advised, with sanitiser stations available throughout the site. TOM SNOWDON COVERS MEN AT WORK’S ‘WHO CAN IT BE NOW?’ CHANNEL EP OUT OCTOBER 7

After releasing his Kylie Minogue cover earlier this month, Tom Snowdon today shares the second instalment of forthcoming covers EP Channel. Listen HERE.

The new single is ‘Who Can It Be Now?‘, originally written and performed by Men At Work in 1981. The minimal arrangement of Snowdon’s interpretation serves to highlight the reclusive lyrics. Over plucked strings & a heart-beat drum, the beseeching vocals bend and soar, building to a euphoric end.

Snowdon hails from Mparntwe/Alice Springs. Family holidays meant looong road trips across the desert to the coast – south, east or north… “Mum and Dad had this album FM Rock Classics from the 80s and we wore the thing out playing it so much. “Who Can It Be Now” was my favourite track on that compilation. I remember vividly the long stretches on the Stuart Highway with that song on repeat. I’d sit for hours just gazing out the window at the landscape and listening. I’d picture a sad man in his house, pushing people away, wanting to be alone – sad but content. Only much later did I start wondering about the deeper messages about fear, isolation and anxiety in those words. That especially has felt relevant amidst the lockdowns we’ve been facing this year.”

YO LA TENGO Share new single ‘Bleeding’ Sleepless Night EP out 9 October Songs chosen for Yoshimoto Nara’s LACMA Exhibition

Yo La Tengo share a second song from their forthcoming EP, Sleepless Night. ‘Bleeding‘ is the record’s standalone original composition, a windswept ballad where delicate guitar melodies give way to cyclonic fuzz. The five-song record will also feature covers of songs by The Byrds, The Delmore Brothers, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Lane, and The Flying Machine.

The tracks on Sleepless Night were initially released as one side of an LP included within a limited-edition catalogue (published by LACMA and DelMonico Books/Prestel) for the LACMA exhibition, Yoshitomo Nara, the first international retrospective for the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara (b. 1959). A longtime YLT fan, Nara worked in collaboration with the group – Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, and James McNew – to choose the EP’s songs.

This Matador version of the EP is a single-sided 12” with original cover art by Nara, a drawing of the band by Hubley, and an illustration by McNew etched on the record’s flip.

Ira Kaplan on Sleepless Night:
“We met Yoshitomo Nara in 2003, would see him at his art shows and our concerts. We DJ’d at an opening at the Asia Society, and on another occasion he drew a picture of Georgia strangling me on a Gloomy pencil case that became one of Georgia’s prized possessions until it was stolen from her at the bar at the K-West hotel in Shepherd’s Bush. To make the catalogue of his 2020 exhibit at LACMA more personal, the idea came up to include an LP of some of Nara’s favourite songs as part of a deluxe edition. We were asked to provide one side of the LP (and that one track be a new composition), with the other side being another six songs selected by Nara, in their original versions. Here are the six songs we contributed to the LACMA record, chosen in collaboration with Nara.”

“I probably was introduced to ‘Blues Stay Away from Me’ on NRBQ’s Workshop LP, working backwards to The Louvin Brothers and The Delmore Brothers (with a detour to Doug Sahm and Band). Our version was recorded by Mark Nevers in February 2011. Charlie Louvin had died just a couple of days before. We were on a tour with William Tyler that came to an end in Nashville. The three of us and William and Kurt Wagner threw together an arrangement of ‘Blues Stay Away from Me‘ as a tribute and closed our show at the Exit/In with it. Since we were hanging around Nashville for a few days before going home, we went to Mark’s studio and recorded it.”

“‘Wasn’t Born to Follow‘ was recorded by Gene Holder as part of the sessions that resulted in Stuff Like That There. Dave Schramm on lead guitar. I’m sure I heard the Byrds’ song for the first time when my mom took me and a bunch of my friends to see Easy Rider. (One kid was forbidden by his parents from joining us, as was my younger brother. My dad took my brother to see Butch Cassidy instead, and I’m guessing my friend stayed home and did homework.)”

“Ronnie Lane didn’t write ‘Roll On Babe‘, but his is the version we’re covering. James recorded it in Hoboken. (And that song was among the songs Georgia played when we DJ’d at the Asia Society.)”

“While making And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out in Nashville, Roger Moutenot recorded Dylan’s ‘It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry‘ for a John Peel birthday show. As best as we can tell, we sent the one and only copy of the master to England. Yes, we’re as dumbfounded as you are, if not more so. After a lot of sleuthing, we came up with this.”

“‘Bleeding‘ was written by us, recorded in Hoboken by James.”

“James also recorded The Flying Machine’s ‘Smile a Little Smile for Me’ for Michael Shelley’s Super Hit Tsunami!, available to people who pledged to WFMU’s 2019 fundraising marathon.”

Just weeks ago, Yo La Tengo released We Have Amnesia Sometimes – a collection of five instrumental compositions that the group recorded in the spring during socially distanced sessions at their rehearsal space in Hoboken, NJ. Out now digitally, a vinyl edition will be available at a later date via Egon and can be pre-ordered HERE. On September 4th, Matador reissued Yo La Tengo’s Electr-o-pura as part of the Revisionist History series. Now in a gatefold sleeve and cut from the original 58-minute master, the new reissue is pressed for the first time on two LPs to ensure the highest quality of audio the album has had on vinyl to date.

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently based in my hometown, Jaboticabal, it’s a small town in the countryside of the São Paulo state in Brazil. And there’s not much things to do, especially in the quarantine. But I’m always travelling.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

I’m still in lockdown since March and in the first week I thought I’d be crazy, to be honest. And didn’t happen, because I took all my time to start to make songs and lyrics that were popping up in my head, and I started to go back and look into the music that I’ve already put online or the songs that I’ve finished, and in my mind were finished, and started to make it completely different with these songs.
And quarantine has helped me so much, allowing the time to look inside myself and not to be just like “freaking out because of what’s going on out there and I can’t change”. Of course, there’s a lot of things that change your perception and make your mental health pretty bad. So I started to think about who I am today as an artist and who I am going to be tomorrow, you know. Because everyday we wake up as a new person. And the things that I’ve wanted to say in my music.How did you first start playing music?

I started to play music when I was 12 years-old. I’ve always been in love with music, my parents used to have a local radio station, so growing up in a house like that was like heaven. Surrounded by vinyl collections, albums and all the equipment get you inspired. And I remember thinking: “this is really what I love to do.”. But then I went to Disney Channel Brazil to act in some TV shows and I came back to musical theater.

And in this meantime, I was still writing my own songs, but I decided to put just covers on YouTube, in acoustic or acapellas, from pop songs. Because I was so afraid of putting my music out for the world, and looking back now that was the most non-sense fear I’ve ever had. And I held myself back when I was at university. So when I started to put my songs on, it was like taking all the cuff around my wrists and finally breaking free, because I wanted to be recognized by my music and not like “the cover guy from YouTube”.Your new single ‘No One Who Loves’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

My new single ‘No One Who Loves’ is influenced by the sound of my favorite bands and artists, like Oh Wonder, FINNEAS, Taylor Swift and LANY. The songwriting of them is amazing. And it’s so different. I’ve been making pop music for a long time, and I always wanted to be involved in everything. If you take my first single ‘Battle Scars’ and this new one, you will see a whole path and how these songs connect. And I wanted to make music to make people feel things and create an atmosphere, because there’s a story to tell.

How did you go about writing No One Who Loves?

This is a very crazy story. I was reading a book named ‘Chain of Gold’ by Cassandra Clare, which I’ve been a fan for a long, long time, and while I was reading the last pages of the book in a very intense way and feeling very connected with the characters’ dynamics in the story. And the last chapter crashes you and there was a line saying “no one who loves”, and I thought it would be a great name for a song.

So the next morning, I could not work and get away from that story inside my head. Since I was 12, the only stories that I’ve told in my music were about myself, people around me and my feelings and broken hearts. And then I wrote a verse about the characters and after an hour, I had the complete lyrics of the song in a different point of view, very away from mine. And that was the first time that this happened.Where and when did you record and who with?

That’s the most complicated part when you’re in quarantine. So I had to set up a home studio to record my new songs from home. I started to seek different music producers and looked over my favorite songs and artists, and through Love You Later, I discovered that she has an amazing producer named Jordie Saenz. So I sat down and wrote the top line and piano guide a month ago and sounded like a ballad in my mind. But at the same time, I wanted to go in another direction.

How did you approach the recording process?

I’ve sent Jordie the demo and gave him 100% of the liberty to make the song happen. Usually I’m always the co-producer of my music, my last single ‘Delicate’ was produced by myself, but with ‘No One Who Loves’ I was willing to give the full power to the music producer. And Jordie took all my references of sounds and turned into this amazing indie-pop track and changed the whole point of view of the song, because in my mind it would be the piano and violins. When I sent the first mix to some people, everyone was surprised by how it sounded.

And it’s hard to be away from Jordie, especially being in Brazil while he’s in California. So I recorded the vocal tracks and sent them to him. But I’m used to that, because I’ve been producing music with friends in London and Vienna like that. For me, it’s very important to see how people are responding to this new single.Where can we listen/buy?

You can listen on every single streaming platform and you can buy in music stores. I know that there’s a lot.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m listening to a lot of songs and artists at the moment, Taylor Swift’s Folklore, which is a masterpiece of her songwriting and Aaron Dessener’s production. The singer-songwriter named Luz. I’ve been listening to a lot of Vance Joy, because he’s the best to uplift your mood. But I’m also listening to Jessie Ware’s What’s Your Pleasure, one of the greatest albums of the year, Jack Garratt, an incredible producer and singer. And there’s Twilight Driving, a British band and with incredible lyrics.

What do you like to do away from music?

Well, I’m a marketing analyst in a brand agency in Brazil, so I’m always making things around art. I love to write stories, which I already published in a sci-fi book series ‘The Dark World’ in Portuguese and planning to publish it in English next year. And recently I discovered that I love to make drinks. And travelling.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

I’m planning to release more songs, actually I’m already recording them. And for the first time I’m collaborating with songwriters, which is new since I’ve always written my songs on my own. But first I need to release ‘No One Who Loves’ music video, before diving into more music and different sounds. And I can’t wait to see and hear them.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My favorite food is Pizza, because c’mon, everyone loves pizza.
And my favorite place isn’t a place, but the idea of it. It’s going to concerts, no matter where. The atmosphere and feeling before a great concert is beyond everything and this is what I’m missing the most this year. But I can’t wait to return to these places next year when everything is normal.

TUNE-YARDS Release new single ‘Nowhere, Man’

Tune-Yards releases their new song ‘nowhere, man’. The bright, brash and upbeat song is paired with a lively video that takes Chaplin-esque footage shot in Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner’s garage during quarantine and brings them to life alongside stop motion animation by Japhy Riddle and Callie Day. The song title references the Beatles song, and is a referendum on how far society has or has not come based on whose stories are told, celebrated and elevated.

Of the video Garbus says,
“The song and the video for ‘nowhere, man’ were created under conditions of feeling squeezed and pushed to the brink — relatively, of course. I wanted to ask, ‘How loudly do I have to shout and sing before I’m heard?’ And the video asks, too, ‘What am I not hearing?’ We hope the music brings energy and a strong wind of encouragement to those who are shouting and singing loudly for justice right now.”

‘nowhere, man’ follows the release of Tune-Yards’ 2018 fourth album i can feel you creep into my private life. Exploring Garbus’ place in the world, the album ruminated on race, politics, intersectional feminism and the environment, and was called “dance-pop at its most polyglot and polemical,” by The Sunday Times, “bright, vital and surprising,” by Gay Times and “an entertainingly disruptive blast of a record with a mirrorball lure,” by Uncut. That same year, Tune-Yards scored Boots Riley’s film Sorry To Bother You and released a critically acclaimed collaborative song ‘Mango’ with actor Lakeith Stanfield’s musical project Moors.

Where are you currently based? New Westminster, BC, Canada is my home and has been for most of my life. What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? It’s been a bizarre experience as I imagine it has been for most people. As scary as the whole world is right now, I’ve tried to take the opportunity and create as much art as possible, but I feel the pressure of being alone all day, every day. Music has been a welcomed therapy throughout this time. I really feel for the people that don’t have an outlet right now, but I do think this has been an opportunity for people to pick up new hobbies, so who knows, maybe the world will get some amazing new music that otherwise would never have been created. How did you first start playing music? I started playing guitar when I was about 8. My friends and I really got into AC/DC, so I naturally wanted to be Angus Young. 3 of my now closest friends and I started a band called ‘World Is History’ and wrote little rock tunes to play at our school talent show every year. Our big moment was a town hall meeting for the closing of our elementary school. We begged the teachers to let us play, and when they said yes we got together and wrote a song about what the school meant to us. The school’s still open to this day, and we all take full responsibility for it. Your new single 'Grapefruit' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? I started Grapefruit about two years before I ever finished it. Believe it or not, it started as more of a Lenny Kravitz rock type song that I never thought would see the light of day. When I came across the unfinished idea years later I was really into Harry Styles’ first solo record and “Wilderness” by Snow Patrol. I can never put my finger on one influence for a song but those two records definitely played a large part in influencing Grapefruit’s writing. How did you go about writing Grapefruit? It’s not like me to start a song and then revisit it after so long, but it was Grapefruit’s concept that lent itself to finally being finished. It was originally about a super fresh breakup I had gone through, and how hard it was to forget them or move on from everything we had built up together. When I came around to finishing the song I had some clarity about the situation and could complete the writing as someone looking in on it rather than being surrounded by it. Weirdly enough finishing it after so long did give me a certain sense of closure. Where can we listen/buy? AMELA UNVEILS NEW SINGLE ‘DNM’

Gold Coast rising alt-pop star Amela returns today with her catchy new single, DnM produced by Josh Beatie (Jenna, Parker Sounds, Luke Howell). The new track follows on from her well received single, I’m Alright, released in March this year.

DnM is a cute electronic pop track that is sure to grab your attention. With catchy hooks, thunderous drums, soaring synths and Amela’s signature glossy vocals, DNM holds a dynamic that will have it stuck in your head for days. It’s a perfect return for the young GC singer-songwriter as she takes her creativity to a higher level.

Amela talks about the inspiration for DnM.

“The song was basically created in our bedroom. Josh Beattie, my partner and I live on an acreage out in the hinterlands of the Gold Coast and for the past 6 months we’ve been building a teaching/songwriting space and recording studio. So while the studio was getting built, we did all of our music production in the bedroom!

The vocals were recorded at QSounds in Burleigh, Gold Coast by Maddy Breen and the rest of the songs’ arrangement was created by Josh Beattie. Josh and I split the arrangement choices with reference to swedish pop-artist ALMA and The Chainsmokers. I wanted to have those fat, simple synths in the break-down.”

LIMBS DEBUT NEW SINGLE + VIDEO ‘I USED TO BE YOU’

Last month, Florida-based post hardcore act LIMBS unleashed their new single ‘Empty Vessel’ alongside a fresh lineup, and are backing it up today with their latest effort ‘I Used To Be You’.

After catching the attention of media giants including Brooklyn Vegan, Revolver, Metal Insider and more on previous outputs, today’s single comes following a premiere team up with Outburn Magazine, here.

Introspective and hard-hitting, ‘I Used To Be You’ was written as a reflection of vocalist Austin McAuley‘s past, riddled with toxic relationships, substance abuse and his struggling to cope with the loss of his father. He adds:

“The song is an introspective look into the person I became when life was at its darkest, but narrates how I was able to overcome adversity and better myself, for my own sake and those around me. The driving force behind this story of rebirth is the memory of my father, his voice in my head telling me not to give up, to never stop fighting (see the lyrics “For all that I’ve seen, as long as you stayed…I can’t be afraid to live up to your name.”)

“Because of him, forever living through me, I embraced defeat and uncertainty, recognising who I once was and striving to better myself by all means necessary.”

In 2018 LIMBS found a home with UNFD ahead of the release of their debut album Father’s Son – a dark and brooding look at a young man’s journey out of religion as he comes to terms with both his upbringing and his own actions. A conceptual album following a young man breaking free from his indoctrinated upbringing, Father’s Son explores the strength in reclaiming your own life.

LIMBS’ live video for their album’s title track, ‘Father’s Son’, was filmed during the band’s 2018 tour with Underoath, Dance Gavin Dance, and Veil Of Maya. THE KING’S PARADE share latest feel good music video, shot in lockdown for new single ‘HOW LONG?’

London based soulful-pop outfit, The King’s Parade have returned with their latest feel good single ‘How Long?‘ and have just dropped a playful and home-brewed music video for the track. Shot in lockdown, and depicting chaos at rehearsal, front-man Olly explains the inspiration behind the visual:

“We had this idea of a rehearsal that’s constantly going wrong, where I desperately try to get things back to normal despite a series of surreal interventions. We filmed it as a one shot, so as well as the action on camera it was absolute carnage behind the scenes, with people running on and off set, building drum kits, taking them away, moving different props into place and switching characters!”

‘How Long?’ it’s the second track to drop from their up-coming debut album, and follows first track ‘Mario‘. Early support for ‘How Long?‘ has come from Tom Robinson at BBC 6 Music, who described it as “an incredibly accomplished sound worthy of a far wider audience”.

Lyrically, ‘How Long?’ continues where ‘Mario‘ left off, with both tracks exploring feelings of nostalgia. Their latest effort ruefully looks back to better days, with feelings of regret and longing mixed with an underlying optimism. Sonically, this new series of singles (four in total before the album drops) represent a band at the peak of its powers, a close-knit group who have truly found their sound, embracing pop and funk sounds as well as a more soulful approach to their vocals and melodies.

Having established a loyal live fanbase and streams in the 10s of millions across all platforms online (through a series of tours, singles and EPs), news of their debut album is much overdue and highly anticipated. The album, out in December 2020 was recorded by Marco Pasquariello (credits include Coldplay and Snow Patrol) and was produced by Guy Massey (credits include Ed Sheeran, Jack Savoretti and The Libertines).

Their previous video for ‘Mario’ has gained over 100K views so far and has been lauded for its creativity, as the band like so many others, had to create something self-produced during lockdown. With the help of friends and fans from across the globe (spanning Europe, New Zealand, USA, Mexico, Uganda and South Africa), they created something totally joyous and celebratory, fitting for these strange times – watch the official music video for Mario here.

Prior to this, 2019 saw the release of their most recent EP ‘Mad’ which was backed by a sold-out headline European tour across Spain, Italy, France, Germany and the UK. The EP rallied strong tastemaker support from the likes of BBC 6Music, The Independent, Clash, Earmilk and many more. This year, the band utilised lockdown to engage with their fans more than ever before. Olly streamed acoustic #StayAtHome sessions live from his living room every day, for eight weeks straight and they all hosted a The King’s Parade themed quiz on Zoom which featured other artists, including Billy Lockett and Hollie Carmen. They even released #StayAtHome merch featuring fan art of Olly´s live-stream backdrop (his lounge), which sold out… twice!

PART TIME RECORDS Announces PTR Singles Club Volume 1 featuring Tiles & Siberian Tiger is out now

It was in the early stages of COVID-19 lockdown that Emma Coyle and Joel Byrne, co-owners of Part Time Records, created PTR Singles Club – a new extension of the label that focuses on delivering a selection of new musical discoveries straight to your doorstep. Today they announce the first iteration of the Singles Club with singles from Adelaide duos Tiles and Siberian Tiger.

Dream pop duo Tiles first came to PTR’s attention in May with the release of their debut single ‘Red Wine’. Emma says of the discovery “Joel and I were already aware of Katie and Matt’s other musical projects having seen them play many times around town – but when we first heard Tiles we were both struck with nineties nostalgia. We felt their aesthetic would be a perfect complement for ‘Water The Plants’, one of the tracks from Siberian Tiger’s debut EP that we wanted to give a physical release”.

Made possible through funding from South Australia’s Music Development Office, Volume 1 of the Singles Club will be released gradually over the coming year and will feature 3 x split 7” singles available via parttimerecords.com as well as digitally. TILES
What began as simple instrumental demos constructed in Matt Schultz’s home studio were brought to life and elevated by the addition of Kate Pomery’s melodic touch and heartfelt confessional lyrics. Drawing inspiration from DIIV, Jay Som and Soccer Mommy, ‘fomo‘ is the result of the duo honing their sound and hints at their penchant for modern shoegaze and dream pop.

Lyrically, ‘fomo‘ is an examination of the importance placed on trying to avoid the anxiety and pressures of life by taking the time out for yourself to do so; it’s about that night you stay in and have a bath instead.

SIBERIAN TIGER
Bree Tranter and Chris Panousakis wrote, produced and recorded their six track debut EP First Dance which was released in mid-August. For Chris, the past few years have seen him fluctuate between his solo project Timberwolf and time spent on the road as Matt Corby’s guitarist, a welcome overlap with Bree, who is also a longstanding member of the band. Bree’s focus was equally on the return of her band – international indie darlings – The Middle East. Sprawled across the globe, the pair found comfort in slowly assembling First Dance however possible. Sometimes together, often apart, yet always making up for lost time in their home studio on the South Australian coastline.

‘Water The Plants‘ encourages the discussion of how important little wins are, when breaking the cycles of depression. When you are on top of the world, something so small as watering the plants seems almost too easy, but when you’re in a funk – if you’re lucky – that might just be the only thing you accomplish that day and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Blackpool’s very own Boston Manor will be performing a very special live show at their city’s most iconic monument – Blackpool Tower – on 15 October. The performance will be broadcast online across the globe at three different times – 8pm BST, 9pm EDT & 8pm AEST (16 October in Australia) – to accommodate fans worldwide. Tickets are available now.

Join Oliver Heldens journey through television with a new exclusive livestream experience ‘Heldens Everywhere’

Global DJ/producer Oliver Heldens invites fans to join him on an interactive journey through television in his epic, upcoming livestream concept ‘Heldens Everywhere.’ Oliver will play an hour-long, action-packed set on October 1st, 21:00 CEST, which will be streamed live on Cadenza.tv. Guided by a steady flow of dance-worthy beats, the livestream will put Oliver and a cast of characters in the middle of an evolving set design centered around six different nostalgic TV show concepts. Recorded live from an old industrial steel plant and theatre location in Amsterdam, the production will include an array of custom-built theatre set-pieces that will transform the physical space around Oliver into each of the six themes as he delivers a highly-anticipated live DJ set.

An artist in every sense of the word, Oliver’s creativity expands well beyond the realm of music. As an integral curator in the ‘Heldens Everywhere’ concept, the multi-platinum artist is set to demonstrate his wildly imaginative flair once again.

As recognized by numerous mainstream publications, Heldens has been coined one of the most prolific artists during the COVID-19 quarantine period. Oliver Heldens goes into HI-LO mode for techno beast ‘Kronos’

HI-LO is back with another heavy duty banger to keep pulses racing and the spirit of the dancefloor alive inside all of us. ‘Kronos’ is an absolute monster and one of his toughest tracks to date.

Huge kick drums kick a hole in your speaker in a hardstyle fashion as the track begins. Hi-hats bite in perfect opposition. The rumblings of a bassline are just discernible in the depths. The breakdown arrives to lay on a rush-inducing synth arpeggio and reverberant, commanding bass tones. All that’s left is for a big snare roll to thrust us towards the drop, where the bass gnarls and warps further and more gritty groove inflection is injected. The second break lays on big, swirling chords that mimic the bass/lead melody and send the track soaring higher. The contrast between this dizzying, euphoric, build-up and the hammer-tough sections that surround it is incredibly pleasing. This one is set to be a big hit with the techno crowd.
