Claire Whitehead Premiere

by the partae September 19, 2020
written by the partae

“This song is about transformative, loving friendship. It expresses the moment in Thelma & Louise when all of their money gets stolen, they’re on the run and Louise has lost all hope. This awakens a fierce commitment in Thelma to change her passive nature and find a solution for the two of them. It is about caring enough for a friendship that you can allow it to change you, as you both grow together.”

Taking the stage, Whitehead guides the audience through a series of country songs – each lending their own narrative to the powerful evolution of Thelma’s character from the 1991 cult classic – Thelma and Louise. Not only do the songs capture key moments in the characters journey – but there is also a visual element where clips from the film will be interspersed with the music to further highlight important moments of Thelma’s feminist awakening.  From innocence and confinement, to independence and an outsider life – the evolution is simultaneously beautiful, strange and heartbreaking as we are taken for a ride with Whitehead into the deep dive of Thelma’s relationship to Louise as she becomes both stronger in herself and closer to her partner in crime.

What’s been happening recently?

I just released my debut single “10 Out of 10”. I have been extremely fortunate to spend a lot of my time creating and collaborating with other artists on exciting upcoming projects.

How has you Covid experience been so far and how has it affected how you create?

So far, my COVID experience has been a complex and fascinating process. Initially, I was entirely unnerved by the lockdown. Pre-pandemic, it had never occurred to me how much of my work and lifestyle in general revolved around the gathering of people. This April was a time of deep reflection and re-evaluation. I took the opportunity to be honest with myself and take stock of which activities I was sad to miss, versus which activities I was relieved to be excused from. I have had to let go of a lot of stressors and instead focus on things which are in my control. I have been inspired by artists and arts organizations who have taken on trail blazing roles to transition musical opportunities into online/ COVID friendly experiences. Every day, I challenge myself and choose to think about what I can do rather than what I cannot do.

How does living in Argenta, BC affect your creative process?

Living in a remote mountain paradise is a big part of my story. I was raised to respect the environment and appreciate spending time in nature. Many of my melodic and lyrical ideas are revealed to me whilst walking forest trails or swimming in Kootenay Lake. I have always valued  how much the space, quiet, and freedom of my surroundings have contributed to my creative process.

How did you first start playing music?

Singing has always felt like the most natural way of expressing myself. When I was fourteen, my dad bought me my first guitar and I started teaching myself chords; I was inspired by the fantasy of being musically independent and accompanying myself with a travel friendly instrument.

What instruments do you play?

Guitar

How do you usually go about writing and recording music?

I use acoustic guitar and my voice as the main tools in my writing process, improvising until I land on something that resonates. Typically, first come the chords and melodies, then I begin negotiating the lyrics. When I record, I like to start with acoustic guitar and vocals as the bones of the song. I’ll listen back and sing along to discover ideas for instrumentation and parts. Sometimes it’s fast, and other times it takes longer, but sooner or later the arrangement takes form through trial, error, and experimentation.

Please tell us about any current music and or music that you have on the way:

My new single “10 Out of 10” is freshly released! This has been an incredibly inspiring season for me. I can barely keep up with all the songs I have been writing and reviving. There is so much music to come and I am so excited to share it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

If the World allows, in 5 years, I see myself touring internationally, perpetually writing songs, and collaborating with some of my favourite musicians.

How are you dealing with no live shows?

I do find it difficult. Despite all the incredible efforts to present performances virtually, I really miss connecting with audiences in person. There is no substitute for the magic of live music. One thing I have learned is I will never take an audience for granted ever again!

What will you do once all the Covid restrictions are lifted?

Travel and tour internationally!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Lukas Nelson, Lianne La Havas, Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift, William Prince, Ruby Waters, & Khruangbin

What do you like to do away from music?

I love travelling, meeting new people, seeing new things, hiking, and spending quality time with friends.

Who or what influences your sound and style?

Joni Mitchell has been the single-most influential artist on my singing, playing, and songwriting. My sound and style is a culmination of the folk music of my childhood, my choral background/ affinity for vocal harmony, and elements of jazz music from my college education.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

So far on the agenda for 2020/ 2021: a handful of intimate and socially distanced concerts/ livestreams, and as much audio and video recording as possible!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I could talk about food all day; it’s impossible to choose just one favourite! My list includes spanakopita, quinoa salad, traditional thin crust margherita pizza, and tacos! I like to hang out at a secret beach or a trail with a view.

Where are you currently based?  We’re from inner Sydney Australia. How did you first start playing music?  Olive started playing violin at 5 years old and was in many orchestras/school bands, while I was a choir nerd. In high school we became band nerds that rebelled and dreamed of being in an indie rock band. How did Egoism form? So those two rebellious band nerds realised they had a really similar taste in music and decided that they could maybe sorta form a real band! What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? It’s been just busy with us recording, writing and producing this Ep as well as a whole bunch of other songs! Your new single 'Here's The Thing' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? We’re both very influenced by British pop, particularly trip hop but also some modern artists like No Rome and the 1975. Just the idea of chopping up these dirty sampled instruments and putting them over the top of an emotional guitar based song feels so exciting.  How did you go about writing Here's The Thing?  Olive wrote the song as a reflection on a really hard time in their relationship. They had this sad melody and lyrics but decided to play it on top of this cool breakbeat sample they were obsessed with at the time. You have an EP on the way, please tell us what we can expect:  A whole bunch of sad ass songs with good pop sensibilities! Where and when did you record/produce? It’s pretty darn DIY, cause recorded and produced pretty much everything (other than the drums) on this EP ourselves, at either Scout or Olive’s house.  How did you approach the recording/production process? Our songs almost always start off as weird little demo on Logic that we’ll show each other before the other says “hmm, it’s good but keep working on it”. Then we tinker and tinker until eventually it’s ready to be mixed and mastered!  What did you find most challenging/rewarding during the creation on the EP? Going into the production of each track we’d often have a really specific sound we wanted. So there was a lot of fiddling and trying wild stuff until we got the sound we were looking for. Matthew Neighbour mixed all the songs on the EP and honestly he’s a trooper for working with us to get it right.  Who are you listening to at the moment?  Really loving the singles from the upcoming Vacations album, but other than that I’ve been on a bit of an electronic binge so mainly Four Tet. What do you like to do away from music?  Olive has been really getting closer to their hipster roots by diving into the analogue photography world. I really love having a million other hobbies that I don’t take seriously nor get that good at (like baking, hand-sewing and gardening I’m terrible at them but they’re darn fun). What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?  Oh definitely writing and recording more, hopefully playing shows and just trying to enjoy ourselves as much as possible. Favourite food and place to hangout? I can say with confidence that our fav food is definitely banh mi and fancy woodfired margarita pizza. And I’d say we both like to hang out at either a friend’s house or on a walk in a really pretty place.

On the heels of her latest single ‘Disaster’, Joanna Jones returns to share new song ‘Step Outside’, Listen Here Melbourne based, New Zealand born, dance pop multidimensional artist Joanna Jones has returned with the highly anticipated follow up to her most recent single ‘Disaster’. Titled Step Outside the new single is a bold flipside to the emotional, break-up ballad - narrated from the perspective of the other person in the dissolving relationship.  Joanna portrays the journey an individual undertakes after being blindsided, as they make their way from the darkness to the light to flourish into their truest selves. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, digging deep where no-one else dwells and taking back their personal power, seeing the brightness, freedom and beauty of the world once more.  Step Outside begins with Joanna’s enigmatic vocal and a moody, pulsating percussion that builds into a crescendo of electronic elements wrapped tightly around the fierce, central theme of owning your own strength. Jones describes the meaning of the song in her own words. “It’s quite funny really as the chorus of Step Outside which was written in July last year goes ‘’So open the door and step outside with nothing to fear and nothing to hide, I didn’t prepare so I wanted to share it with you and me instead’’ which when put into the context of our current Covid crisis is totally inappropriate. Haha However, what the chorus is actually referring to is stepping out into the world after being betrayed and blind sided. Digging deep where no one else dwells, knowing your worth (even if others can’t see it) and stepping into your power, outside of the judgements and expectations of others to flourish into your truest self. No matter how many people let you down, you always have the ability to rise up and see the beauty in the world. No one can take that away from you.  'Disaster' (Part One) has a dreamy, but busy sultry fifty shades of grey vibe and the vocals are totally reverbed out, where as I wanted Step Outside’s chorus to slap really hard and be empowering in an uplifting, but dark edgy way, which I think it does. Both vocals were recorded from my home studio in Melbourne”. Step Outside is Joanna's fourth release of the year. “..a distinct sound and energy that grabs you.”

Gold Coast four-piece, Girl and Girl make a splash with their new single ‘Ocean Song’. The single marks a sonic progression for the band, known by fans for their trademark garage rock sound, only this time with a jazzy twist.

Self-proclaimed ‘desperate rock’ artists, the band are unique in nature, featuring Aunty Liss, her nephew Kai Aubert, and his two friends Jayden Williams and Coby Williams. ‘Ocean Song’ is an introspective track that touches on the themes of rumination and ‘action over thought’.

“For me personally, it’s about over-analyzing every possible situation, the song says spend more time taking action and less time thinking, because thinking will ruin your life, or thinking too much rather,” explains lead singer Kai.

Girl and Girl have been busy growing their fanbase amongst across Gold Coast and Brisbane, having been dubbed favourites of 2019 by ABC Radio’s GC Drive and walked away with first place at The Green Room Battle of the Bands (Gold Coast) in that same year. The band have also been seen playing alongside Gold Coast favourites such as Peach Fur and Pure Milk earlier this year.

Dive into the latest single from Girl and Girl as they are shore to make waves.

Emerging producer and rapper Asha Imuno shares the single ‘CAVIAR’ featuring Gidi, from his forthcoming album Good News, set for release October 15th via b4 / Remote Control. The track is available to download and stream now on all available platforms. GRENADE JUMPER RELEASE BRASH NEW SINGLE 'THE POWER YOU FLAUNTED' FROM THEIR UPCOMING TWO-TRACK WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IT ALL FALLS DOWN

GRENADE JUMPER announce upcoming two-track, led by new single ‘The Power You Flaunted’

FROM THEIR UPCOMING TWO-TRACK WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IT ALL FALLS DOWN

Sydney alt-rockers Grenade Jumper make their raucous return with the fervent new single ‘The Power You Flaunted’, taken from their upcoming two-track What’s Left When It All Falls Down.

‘The Power You Flaunted’ is available to stream HERE.

Brash and authentic, ‘The Power You Flaunted’ follows the release of Grenade Jumper’s blistering single ‘Heat Wave’ that dropped in March. It sees the quartet growing into their sound, developing a more nuanced, darker edge to their songwriting, yet still thumping with a raw, punk spirit. Across four minutes, vocalist Bianca Davino conducts the musical chaos, her lively delivery creating an equal sense of intimidation and vulnerability.

On the stark lyrical content, the band shared, “This song focuses on generational distrust, propelled by losing faith in the leaders — both political and within the arts world — who failed to take care of us like they promised. It’s about tearing away the facade that they exist behind, and outing them from their positions of power.”

“I’ve been wanting to write a song like this ever since I heard the lyric, “all of our heroes fading, now I can’t stand to be alone” in the Lorde song ‘Perfect Places’. That song was released just as the MeToo movement began to pick up steam and it felt so relevant because I think it was the first time as a generation, especially in the music world, we started to see our heroes crumble and experience that betrayal.

“The Power Your Flaunted culminates that sense of hurt and frustration, and was written in a flurry of reflection on the movement, as well as the general state of the world in early 2020. We’re very proud of this track, because more than anything, it showcases how we’ve developed artistically and as musicians over the last year. We wanted to make a loud statement with it, and I believe we achieved that.”

Since their formation in 2018, Sydney’s Grenade Jumper – Bianca Davino (vocals), Dean Fernance (drums), Lukas Sikes-Georgiannis (bass) and Max Jacobson (guitars) have drawn on inspiration from alt-rock greats Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins and The Strokes to deliver huge riffs and catchy hooks, powered by an unwavering passion for the genre. With a string of anthemic releases behind them, including their debut ‘Get Ahead’ and 2019’s widely-praised ‘Gazed’, the band were awarded Trendsetter status by triple j, and have shared the stage with scene heavyweights Deaf Havana (UK), Between You and Me, Hellions and more.

Where are you currently based? I’m currently based out of Nürnberg where I live with my wife and son. How did you first start playing music? I started singing when I was very young, as young as I can remember. Guitar I started learning around 2011. I never really wanted to play guitar, I just needed something to be able to sing to, so naturally guitar seemed like the best thing. What's been happening recently? Nothing out of the usual, producing music, spending time with family and enjoying life :) What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? So far Covid hasn’t really impacted my life too much financially, thanks to the help from the government for small businesses. Although I would have made a lot more money if nothing had been canceled or postponed, I’m just glad I’m able to continue paying the bills. Your new single 'Coming Home' will be out on Sept 11, what influenced the sound and songwriting, especially the lyrics? I’ve been using acoustic guitar and atmospheric electric guitar for some time now, so I’m generally always incorporating these elements in my music. Songwriting has never been much of a problem as long as I have a good idea or mood to start with, wich by “coming home” was the cozy home feeling. How did you go about writing Coming Home? Writing about home or life at home was a nice change, because it was so easy to convey in words what being at home feels like. Usually I would have to do a little brainstorming or word finding, but with this song it came naturally. Where and when did you record/produce and who with? I recorded the song on my own in my home studio a few months ago. What programs/instruments did you use? I work with FL Studio and Waves plugins. Acoustic guitar and electric guitar are a must. What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation and recording of Coming Home? I honestly can’t think of anything challenging about producing or creating any song in general. If something is challenging during the creation or recording of a song, then your doing it wrong :) What do you like to do away from music? I have lots of hobbies things I enjoy doing, like spending quality time with family, going on a run, or just sitting around and being at peace. Who are you listening to at the moment? Ravi Shankar and a Spotify Playlist called Hindusthani Instrumental. It’s amazing for coming down and relaxing. What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021? Lots of new music! Our current strategy is releasing singles, which is great, because focusing on one song at a time makes everything go smoother production and songwriting wise. Favourite food and place to hangout? German Pancakes with Ahorn syrup and my favorite place to hangout would have to be on the couch at home! https://www.facebook.com/mikelanemusic

MICHAEL LANE (US) – Indie Folk – Single/Video “Coming Home”

by the partae September 17, 2020
written by the partae
Michael Lane releases the indie-folk single “Coming Home” on September 11th. The previously known global reality has recently ceased to exist. Coming home, being at home or feeling at home has since been associated with a multitude of new, different feelings, in both a positive and a negative sense. But just as different as people are, so are the emotions at the thought of coming home just as unique.
The song “Coming Home” isn’t just about coming home, but more about the feeling you get or have when you’re at a place that you would consider your home. Growing up I moved around a lot, and never really had a steady place that I could call home until I started my own family, and now I do have my own place to call home. It really is a sanctuary for my soul, where I can relax and enjoy the finer things in life“, Michael Lane explains.
If there is a modern folk-pop artist who has seen the harsh realities in life, it is Michael Lane himself. As a US soldier in his twenties, sent to Iraq and Afghanistan, Michael was forced to live at cruelty. And if his previous albums were like a kind of musical diary in which these experiences were reflected, Michael Lane’s regained ease and joy can clearly be seen in
Coming Home”. The song is a message of hope and positive certainty that a time of crisis will lead people back to the important things.
Successes such as two top 50 songs in the German charts, four albums, international tours and the single “Liberty” as the official song of the 2015/2016 Four Hills Tournament, Europe’s biggest international ski jump event, have made the German-American known to the public. In addition to his work as a musician, Michael Lane is currently also active as a songwriter for production music and as a music producer in his remote “Studio Waldblick”.

Where are you currently based? I live in the Czech Republic, and I like it here so far, but who knows what the future brings. How did you first start playing music? I started playing music when I was about 2 years old because I was highly influenced by my siblings who are great musicians. They played at home often so I became familiar with different tones and sounds. They used to play punk, which may explain why my music is alternative. What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? I don´t know how to correctly explain that as it was a very new experience, but for me it has been a disaster. The economy is in trouble and Covid PR is unbelievable. We are constantly being fed information 24/7. There have been a lot of restrictions put in place and this has created a worldwide panic. It’ll be interesting to see the information and end result of everything once things settle down. Your debut album 'Discovery' will be coming out in the next few months of 2020, what influences your sound and songwriting? This is something connected to my inner self. A bit of my life, but mostly, imaginary stories or ideas. I like imagination and the concept of dreaming. It’s as if you feel that there can be another part of yourself which is struggling through the world. Do we know who we really are? I think that there is a new phenomena in this world and we actually aren´t supposed to be ourselves. We are just parts of a machine and our inner selves are hidden somewhere behind that chaos of malicious thoughts and ideas coming from the outer world. And I suppose my songwriting is highly influenced by the unrecognizable inner motions that keep me alive, separated from things happening outside. I have to say, music is protecting me from going crazy sometimes, especially when I think about what´s been happening around the world. How do you usually go about writing music? Technically, I start with rhythm, then I do some music, like melodies and other components. Then I think about lyrics and so on. This is all technical, but there is the question of mood, a very important topic for me but it´s hard to say, this is a process of random behaviour. Please tell us about the way you approach recording the process that you go through: There is actually no process I go through. Our current state is the one we have been living in since birth and we have to just “enjoy and live”. The whole process is a manifestation of joy. What programs/instruments do you use? I play the bass, guitar, drums, piano and I use my voice mostly. As for programs, I use various ones that I discovered mostly one my own. Each artist has a different style so I’ve definitely found the programs that work for me personally. What do you find most rewarding and challenging when creating and recording music? To create the best piece of music I have ever heard. What do you like to do away from music? I like travelling, partying and meeting new people. Who are you listening to at the moment? It's hard to say because there isn’t much that I connect with. The other day I listened to ZHU and Radiohead, who I’ve always liked. Apart from that, nothing brand new that has caught my attention. What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021? To save the world, maybe, because this is the most important thing, and I am not the only one. There are many people who would like to do the same. So, when we all try our best, we will achieve that, and everything will be fine. There are many ways to accomplish that. Favourite food and place to hangout? I love a lot of pubs here in the Czech Republic. One of the greatest Mexican restaurants is situated in Pilsen where I used to live. When I want to go out for a meal, I like to choose that one. When I want to hang out, I prefer going to Zach´s Pub, which is an Irish pub, or other local places such as Raven.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

I don´t know how to correctly explain that as it was a very new experience, but for me it has been a disaster. The economy is in trouble and Covid PR is unbelievable. “Lonely Diamond feels like a musical moment, a landmark release for a band on the cusp of Australian music prestige” – Music Feeds

**** “a monster of a record that manages to inspire excitement at every one of its dizzying turns” – NME Australia

**** “one of Australia’s most accomplished and exciting bands on the scene”
– Rolling Stone Australia

7.5 “showcases Ocean Alley at what they do best, unadulterated psychedelic rock”
– The Line of Best Fit

Ocean Alley are proud to announce their upcoming film Lonely Diamond – Live In Studio, a live performance of their recent third album Lonely Diamond played in full. Presented in conjunction with the band’s community brand A Day For The Beaches, the film will premiere online at 8pm local time on Friday 25 September in Sydney, UK, New York City and Los Angeles, available for ticket-buyers to watch at any time globally for 48 hours. The band will join a live Q&A chat hosted on the video platform to coincide with the premiere in each time zone.

Lonely Diamond – Live In Studio tickets are available for $16.99 from oceanalley.com.au. $3 from each sale is being donated to Ocean Alley’s local community partners One Eighty and Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

Shot on 16mm film and digital by frequent collaborators The Sauce, Lonely Diamond – Live In Studio was recorded at Sydney’s Studios 301 and provides an intimate live setting for music-lovers to experience Ocean Alley’s latest album, immersing fans into their world with a look into the action and banter that goes on behind-the-scenes and during a live performance. With audio recorded by the band’s long-time producer Callum Howell, Ocean Alley’s renowned production and performance quality is at the forefront of the film – never losing the charming or dynamic essence for which they are so celebrated – reimagining how Lonely Diamond can be experienced in a new and socially-distanced way while providing the first opportunity for fans to connect with the album in a full band performance, despite the current pause on touring due to COVID-19. Adding a dimension of otherworldliness to the film, the album’s visual identity is integrated into the set’s design, using irregular shapes and contrasting gradients to lean into Lonely Diamond’s themes of exploration and escapism.

After 12 months of writing and recording, Lonely Diamond was released to critical acclaim in June and debuted at #1 on the ARIA Vinyl Chart, #2 on the Australian Albums Chart and #3 on the overall Albums Chart, surpassing more than 32 million streams to date. Featuring singles ‘Stained Glass‘, ‘Infinity‘, ‘Tombstone‘, ‘Hot Chicken‘ and ‘Way Down‘, it was awarded triple j’s coveted Feature Album and The Music’s Album of the Week, accompanied by 4 star reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone Australia and NME Australia, plus a 7.5 from The Line of Best Fit. The six-piece had been gearing up to play their biggest rooms to date ahead of its release, however all shows have been rescheduled until February-March 2021 with more than 25,000 tickets already sold.

Australia’s beloved psychedelic-surf-rockers Ocean Alley have spent the past decade creating a unique lane for themselves as a proudly independent band, their vision and sound guided solely by their instinct and passion. Despite sold out international tours and major festival appearances including Reading & Leeds (UK), Splendour In The Grass (AUS) and Sziget (HU) under their belt, plus more than 325 million catalogue streams, the inner-workings of the band haven’t changed much since their humble beginnings jamming in a Northern Beaches garage. They are still fiercely independent, constantly pushing their own boundaries and defying expectations of what their music can be.

LONELY DIAMOND – LIVE IN STUDIO
Premiering Friday 25 September @ 8pm AEST
+ 8pm BST / 8pm EDT / 8pm PDT

OMAR APOLLO SHARES NEW SINGLE 'KAMIKAZE'

OMAR APOLLO SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘KAMIKAZE’

by the partae September 17, 2020
written by the partae
LOVE FOR OMAR APOLLO

“Sleek, soulful, heartache-infused love songs”
NPR

“A triple threat of an artist with plenty to offer”
Pitchfork

“Lovelorn songs that reconcile the sultry sounds of D’Angelo, Prince, and Frank Ocean with Mexican soul and traditional corridos”
Rolling Stone

On the heels of his latest single ‘Stayback‘, Omar Apollo returns to share a new song ‘Kamikaze‘, listen HERE.

‘Kamikaze‘ is his third release of the year, following the aforementioned self-written and self-produced ‘Stayback‘, which The FADER called “his downright funkiest work to date“, as well as the song’s remix featuring Parliament-Funkadelic’s Bootsy Collins.

Speaking on the inspiration behind ‘Kamikaze‘ Omar says: “‘Kamikaze’ is a song that taps into my old emotions, taking it back to when I was younger. When I made ‘Kamikaze’ I was reminiscing on how I used to feel for someone and realizing those feelings are lost and we’re left with nothing. It feels good to hold on to the memories without the feelings it gave me.”

Since his 2018 critically-acclaimed debut EP Stereo, Omar Apollo has continued to ascend as an undeniable talent to watch, becoming one of today’s brightest breakout stars and one of the most talked-about new artists of the last couple of years. Last year he released his second EP Friends, and Rolling Stone named him an Artist You Need To Know, Pitchfork featured him as a Rising artist, he made his late-night television debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers, had two headlining North American tours which included stops at Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival and Tropicalía Festival, and took his first trip to Australia touring the Laneway Festival along with his debut headline shows in and Melbourne to rave reviews. He was also part of YouTube’s Foundry International artist development program, with past alumni including Cuco, ROSALÍA, Gunna, Chloe X Halle, and Dua Lipa. In late 2019, he released a pair of singles with Kenny Beats – ‘Frio‘ and ‘Hit Me Up‘ – the former showcasing Spanish lyrics and playing off of Dembow music, the latter of which featured Dominic Fike. More recently, he released ‘Imagine U‘ which was also co-produced by Kenny Beats and was described by Uproxx as “an alluring, melodic anthem about modern heartbreak.“

‘Kamikaze‘ by Omar Apollo is out now, buy/stream it here.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Straws In The Wind

by the partae September 17, 2020
written by the partae

Hot off the heels of two stellar singles so far this year, KGATLW are back at it with another crunchy groove. This one imbued with a rigid clockwork backbeat that’s in no hurry to snap the listener from the psychedelic trance it induces. ‘Straws In The Wind’ is a headphone odyssey, with scant percussion and delicate acoustic plucks spread over the stereo spectrum, jumping from left to right and back across. Harmonicas, mellotron-like synths and microtonal riffage sit below Ambrose Kenny-Smith’s vocals, as each melody melts and falls after each other in steady motion. Both locking into and softening the percussive edges of this 5 minute roller.

Working again with long time collaborator Jason Galea, the video for ‘Straws’ sees the band bring 80’s kitsch to the screen. With a VCR fever dream that intoxicates and warps the viewer with each blinking glitch and jerky skitter.

CRATERFACE JOIN FORCES WITH SHADY NASTY ON ‘ORIGAMI’ FROM FORTHCOMING MIXTAPE BURN AFTER LISTENING

Alternative rap duo Craterface have teamed up with Sydney’s Shady Nasty on new release ‘ORIGAMI’. Following ‘BIG WHEELIN’’, this is the latest single from their forthcoming confessional mixtape BURN AFTER LISTENING. Listen HERE and watch HERE.

‘ORIGAMI’ is a song of uncertainty, where the jubilant joyride of ‘BIG WHEELIN’’ is over. Inspired by growth and trust, shying away from materialistic influenced braggadocio, baby bruh’s bars and taki local‘s siren-like beats are aimed at their skeptics. Egged on by doubt and hesitation, ‘ORIGAMI’ is supercharged with faith in the Craterface project, themselves and each other. Speaking to BURN AFTER LISTENING’s cyclical nature, thoughts of Bambi’s stuck in headlights shift to positing the duo as unsuspected diamonds in the rough, “like a dollar in the drain” galvanised and encouraged by their big brothers, Shady Nasty.

Since touring together in support of the Bad Posture EP, both groups have nurtured their bond, carved out in ‘ORIGAMI‘ as a DIY labour of love. Written and produced by Craterface, the music video was shot by Shady Nasty drummer Luca Watson and their frequent collaborator Harry Welsh (Behind You). Vocalist Kevin Stathis shares, “ORIGAMI was an absolute pleasure for us and we’re honoured to be a part of it. Full credit to the Craterface boys for their undying courage and determination.”

Speaking on the collaborative process, Craterface say: “Thematically, the track details a severe sense of urgency from baby bruh, which is paired with a poetic description of mental hesitation from Kevin. The title stems from Kevin’s lyric “folding into two”, conceptually we liked that a lot and knew it had many subtle applications to other lyrics found in the song.”

Filmed in their native Newcastle, the clip flicks between overt and disguised references of spirituality, reflection and ascension including but not limited to the Christ Church Cathedral, Stockton Bridge, and The Terminator. Distorted animations chop and change throughout, like flying internal thoughts of turmoil. Craterface carefully curate each element of their craft at home, comfortably keeping their own feet on the gas. Now with the upcoming release of their confessional tape BURN AFTER LISTENING, baby bruh and taki local explore belief, heartbreak, cyclical growth and finding self love, while wearing their hometown on their sleeve.

‘ORIGAMI ft. Shady Nasty’ by Craterface is out now, buy/stream it here.

BEN HARPER REVEALS OCTOBER 23 RELEASE DATE FOR SOLO LAP STEEL GUITAR ALBUM WINTER IS FOR LOVERS UNVEILS NEW SONG “LONDON”

by the partae September 17, 2020
written by the partae

Ben Harper has released “London,” a new preview of his forthcoming album Winter is For Lovers (ANTI- Records). Along with the single, Harper has confirmed the album’s release date for October 23rd. The album is Harper’s first-ever entirely instrumental project, and in many ways his entire musical life has culminated in this moment: a 15-song solo recording of original compositions imagined as a symphony on his lap steel guitar.

Watch Harper perform a live version of “London” that was just filmed at The Folk Music Store, the influential California instrument shop his grandparents opened in the 1950s.

“The track ‘London’ for me is influenced by the great British guitar players, such as Richard Thompson, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Jimmy Page. It’s got that driving British push and pulse, a  jingling jangling rumble that I tried to get that sound on that track and to me it felt like London specifically,” Harper says of the track.

Meditative and affecting, the music featured on Winter Is For Lovers is deeply ingrained in Harper’s DNA and leads directly back to The Folk Music Store, which has hosted luminaries of all stripes, including Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, the Rev. Gary Davis, Doc Watson and John Fahey. While Harper worked in the shop throughout his childhood, he met iconic players like Leonard Cohen, Taj Mahal, David Lindley and Jackson Browne.

Winter Is For Lovers is filled with the music Harper heard growing up, listening to the blues, Hawaiian and classical guitar masters in his mother’s record collection. He gravitated early on to the distinct wail of the slide guitar, learning finger picking from the great Taj Mahal and later studying with Chris Darrow of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – a lap steel virtuoso who had a major influence on Harper’s lifelong embrace of the instrument.

Harper has pushed musical boundaries since his 1994 debut and his lap steel guitar has played a tremendous role in his distinct sound throughout his career. But he’s never made an album that so purely distills his reverence for the instrument, and his mastery of it.

Winter Is For Lovers tracklist:

1. Istanbul
2. Manhattan
3. Joshua Tree
4. Inland Empire
5. Harlem
6. Lebanon
7. London
8. Toronto
9. Verona
10. Brittany
11. Montreal
12. Bizanet
13. Toronto (Reprise)
14. Islip
15. Paris

HELLO FOREVER Share new single & video ‘I’m Feeling It’ Debut album Whatever It Is to released physically on Friday 2 October

Praise for Hello Forever

“Reminiscent of Polyphonic Spree or The Hidden Cameras, those harmonies soar close to the Beach Boys while maintaining a heavenly, psychedelic edge.” – CLASH

“Sonically rich, electric and organic” – The Most Radicalist

“Packed to the rafters with joyous melodies, introspective lyrics, and sun-drenched psychedelic hues.” – Wonderland.

Rough Trade Records & Remote Control Records are excited to share a new single & video (directed by Sam Joseph) from the forthcoming debut album Whatever It Is by Californian group Hello Forever. Check out ‘I’m Feeling It’ here now.

Frontman Sam Joseph explains a little about the song, “Songs have a way of writing themselves. ‘I’m feeling it’ came out all at once in a moment when I was unhinged and disconnected — it lifted me up out of that trance and reminded me of what’s underneath. It’s an anthem for experiences like the one I had writing it – catching that little twinkle of the good that’s connecting everything when it shines through the confusion and the mystery, and letting that twinkle be a whole truth in itself even though it’s only a tiny piece. It was a joy recording this song at home in Topanga with Danny Parra and the rest of the group.”

Based in Topanga, California, on a piece of land once used by a free-love nudist commune, the art-pop collective Hello Forever are led by the eccentric, magnetic figure of Samuel Joseph. They live together, in this pastoral setting high above the Pacific Ocean – not far from where Neil Young recorded After the Gold Rush or Captain Beefheart laid down the tracks for Trout Mask Replica, the group forever expanding and contracting, with members coming and going as they please. However, the group adheres to a stringent five day a week rehearsal schedule, they fuse elements of the 60s West Coast sound with a DIY approach to music and creativity which has spawned their remarkable debut album, the aptly titled Whatever It Is. Joseph and company have created a contemporary throwback to a vibrant era with a set of songs that establish the collective’s exquisite harmonies and colourful instrumentation.

Hello Forever’s music is inextricable with the lifestyle and spiritual goals of its participants, a revolving membership that also includes, at various times, collaborators drummer/co-founder Andy Jimenez, Molly Pease, Jaron Crespi, Joey Briggs, Anand Darsie and Lina Kay. Walk into their communal compound and one of the first things one sees is a copy of the late Baba Ram Dass’ counter-culture classic, Be Here Now, perhaps the best description of the collective’s philosophy of life, creativity, art and music.

Hello Forever – Whatever It Is is out physically on Friday 2 October via Rough Trade / Remote Control Records
