Introducing Aotearoa / New Zealand via London singer songwriter Molly Payton who today shares new single and video ‘Honey’, her first music of 2021.

The London-based 19-year-old is currently in her homeland of New Zealand, where she completed the track remotely with her frequent collaborator Oli Barton-Wood (Nilüfer Yanya, Porridge Radio, Sorry), as well as Grammy-award winning producer Jimmy Hogarth (Sia, Amy Winehouse) and British songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwich. ‘Honey’ follows Payton’s breakout EP Porcupine, released last Autumn to wide critical acclaim, which led to her being flagged as one to watch by the likes of Pigeons & Planes, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, Steve Lamacq at 6Music and Jack Saunders at BBC Radio 1. It also caught the ears of fellow artists, including Arlo Parks, who chose Payton to appear alongside her takeover of Spotify’s ‘Our Generation’ playlist, commenting of Payton’s music “there was just this sense of rawness and earnestness that really reminded me of things that I’ve lived myself.”

Where Porcupine celebrated the freedom and chaos of Payton’s young adulthood, navigating her new city of London in her first year after high school, the introspective tone of ‘Honey’ hints at a coming of age. In her words; “Honey is about that moment in a relationship where things stop working as well as they used to. This song was me taking responsibility for my part in the decay of it all, acknowledging that I’d been distant and that I’d keep trying to make things work. I think there’s also an undercurrent of frustration with myself for letting my past interfere with my present. Like most songs I write it was mostly just me working through my own mind and emotions, but I guess the message of this song would be to make sure you’re not giving too much of yourself away. Take time to make sure you’re ok so that you can support the people you love.”

The thematic shift is one that mirrors Payton’s return to her roots. Originally intended to be a short stay, her time in New Zealand was extended as UK lockdowns prevailed. As well as spending time with the friends and places she left as a teenager, it also fuelled her resolution to reconnect with the memories and tribulations of her past, and process them through her songwriting. Revolving around  the adage of looking back in order to move forward, she describes her coming output as “honest, reflective and hopeful.” Her time back home also allowed her to rediscover the catharsis of playing live, with Payton performing a series of full-capacity headline gigs against the backdrop of New Zealand’s low Covid rates and eased restrictions.

Molly Payton’s first offering came in the form of her debut EP Mess, which was co-produced with Oscar Lang (Dirty Hit), who she met at her new school soon after relocating to the UK at age 16. This was followed up by 2020’s Porcupine, which saw her strike up a new songwriting partnership with producer Oli Barton-Wood, embracing a fuller sound, a direct reflection of her contemporary experiences in London and changing tastes. Praised for her evocative lyricism and evolved songwriting, ‘Honey’ doesn’t compromise any of Payton’s edge, yet offers a more personal look into the workings of the young songwriter, and forecasts bright things for Molly this year.

‘Honey‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

SARAH YAGKI returns with another dose of lush alt-pop in ‘CAN’T HARDLY LIE’

by the partae June 25, 2021
written by the partae

Off the back of recent single ‘Shared Eyes’, singer songwriter Sarah Yagki is back with a fresh dose of goodness in ‘Can’t Hardly Lie’. It’s another step forward for the artist who has been dropping some gems through 2021, with ‘Can’t Hardly Lie’ stepping up as one of her most assured and confident releases yet.

Melodic, fully fleshed out and mixing with some more production technique, ‘Can’t Hardly Lie’ charts some great emotional range from Sarah as a vocalist. Earlier releases have seen her lean into some darker pop tones to relate a full spectrum of emotion from heartache to anger and rejuvenation.

‘Can’t Hardly Lie’ stands as a prime example of her talent to convey anger, bitterness and sharpness with love and heartbreak, striking a balance between both with natural ease.

“Can’t Hardly Lie is a track that I harnessed all my emotional energy, from love to pain to anger and regret, into a track and sculpted it to reflect this. It is, to date, my rawest song based on a personal experience in a relationship, and how I rediscovered and found my own sense of self and strength in it.”
Sarah Yagki

As with ‘Shared Eyes’, Sarah worked out of Obseen Recordings in Bowral NSW, with Klaus Hill on mastering duties. The material that came together through these sessions have come together in further defining Sarah’s whole artistic sound. Recently signing with Scott McKenzie and Premier Artists for bookings, we can expect to be seeing more from Sarah as live music continues to restart around the country.

With more to come this year, ‘Can’t Hardly Lie’ is another strong flex from the talented young songwriter.

“Her music is simultaneously raw and explorative; it’s rooted in pop, but reaches for wider…”
Happy Magazine“Melding pop melodies with heartfelt lyricism, her ethereal voice soars enticingly over experimental electronic beats.”
Little Indie Blogs

“Emotional vibes on this one from Sarah. It’s put together pretty solidly with a steady-cruising production and some clean vocals.”

Canadian Pop Singer Cassie Dasilva to Release Debut EP ‘Enough’ on July 23

Canadian Pop Singer Cassie Dasilva to Release Debut EP ‘Enough’ on July 23

Lead Track “Unsolicited Contact” Garners Over One Million Views on TikTok

Toronto, ON – Canadian pop singer / songwriter Cassie Dasilva is set to release her debut EP Enough independently on July 23 via all streaming platforms. The 6-track EP is a collection of songs that focuses on relationships and explores both dealing with a breakup and finding love.

Ontario based Dasilva was determined to create the EP with an all-female production team after a disappointing major label deal left her navigating the industry on her own. Working with multi-award-winning Canadian songwriter/producers Robyn Dell’Unto (Wild Rivers, Gus, Lu Kala) and Hill Kourkoutis (Jules, Serena Ryder), with Grammy award-winning mastering engineer Emily Lazar, Dasilva’s EP came to fruition.

“Enough is a collection of songs that focuses on relationships and explores both dealing with a breakup and being in love. I understand that, thematically, the two don’t go together, but I’ve found in my experience that love and heartbreak aren’t sequential. They’re not always independent of one another, and it’s entirely possible to experience feelings of heartbreak, anger and frustration, while completely falling in love with someone new. I know, because that’s my story,” said Dasilva.

The first single released off the EP; “Unsolicited Contact” went viral on TikTok, with a clip of the ‘Scream Queens’-inspired music video earning over one million views on the platform. Dasilva has seen continued growth on social media and on streaming platforms since releasing two more singles from her EP, “We Might Break Up” and “I Don’t Trust Anyone Anymore” with their respective 100% female-made pastel dreamland and movement choreo themed videos.

In addition, the EP will include three new tracks “I Don’t Hang out with My Exes”, “Darkside” and “Enough”, each inspired by Dasilva’s relationships, past and present. “Darkside” gives insight into the end of a past relationship, and is a reflection of being able to come out of that darkness into a place of love and growth. The title track, “Enough” was written about finding love and contentment with her current long-term boyfriend, and acknowledging that true love, above all else, is enough.

Dasilva burst onto the Canadian pop scene in 2018 with a comparatively glossier sound, releasing “Welcome to My Castle” and “Rough Cut” on her first major recording contract under Universal Music Canada after an impromptu jam night performance caught the attention of the label’s President & CEO. Both songs were produced by JUNO Award- winner Mike Wise (bülow, Ralph). “Welcome to My Castle” peaked at #8 on Spotify’s Canada Viral 50 chart, and “Rough Cut” was featured on the infamous PerezHilton.com.

Dasilva ended 2018 with the independent release of a holiday original, “Season’s Greetings”. Featured at the top of Spotify’s “Christmas in Canada” playlist and in the film “The Christmas Wedding Planner” (which trended worldwide on Netflix). She went on to release “Still in Love” (produced by Mike Wise) independently in 2019, which outperformed both of her label releases on streaming platforms in only two weeks.

For this 100% female-produced project, Dasilva has crafted a collection of songs that are unapologetically vulnerable and honest. Calling out our collective exes amidst infectious melodies and edgy production, she not only has a lot to say, but has figured out exactly how she wants to say it… and she’s ready to be heard.

Yael Wand ”Navigate By Stars’ Premiere

by the partae June 25, 2021
written by the partae

A deep dive into Yael’s life via a myriad of transitions which saw her through motherhood, various moves, and a creative hiatus – her new album is a testament to her drive, passion and incredible musicality. Staying true to her roots, Yael (pronounced Yah-Elle) continues to compose songs that showcase her effortless sensibility when it comes to blending the worlds of folk, jazz, roots and blues. The intensely personal and heartfelt subject of the new music, builds upon that and brings the listener into a sonic world of honesty and understanding.  “My original intention for this record was to record these songs as a bookmark of the transitions that I underwent over the past 10 years. Transitions of home and community, my role in life, my relationships, even my age,” says Wand.  “In late 2019, I enlisted musicians and friends Alan Kerr and Christina Zaenker to help me. We drove up to Corwin Fox’s Hidden Well Studio in Cumberland, BC with the intent of creating a more or less, live off the floor album – quick, raw, rustic and authentic.”

Originally emerging on the Canadian folk scene in 2004. The BC Interior Music Award nominee established herself through repeat tours in western Canada and across Ontario, garnering both national and regional media attention. From her base (at the time) in Wells BC, she established her reputation one show at a time, and had audiences connecting to her stories of far off places, songs of life in the slow lane, and lulled by “the effortless beauty of her voice” (Exclaim!).   At Your Door, Wand’s 2007 release garnered her radio play from coast to coast and press across the country and her third solo album, Good Stitch Gone (2009), produced by Corwin Fox, placed her squarely in the Americana genre without compromising either her free-spirited sound or her worldly sophistication.  With brand new music on the horizon, Wand has her sights on reconnecting with fans in the  communities she once frequented and igniting a renewed interest in her music through digital means.

We all have those deep, life moments; where you feel like you are in the right place, at the right time, doing what you are meant to do.  That is how May Davis feels when she performs.  Her energy radiates from her in the form of soulful lyrics and raw, genuine vocals.  Often compared to the likes of legendary vocalists like Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks and Norah Jones, Davis has been coined to have ” ….the voice of an angel hit by a Whiskey truck” and is sure to intoxicate audiences with her witty stage presence and folk-inspired Americana music.  She released her first Solo Album, Denim Blues, in 2019 and recently became a recipient of AmplifyBC’s Career Development grant.

JAZZY K RELEASES DEBUT SINGLE TRAP HOUSE

by the partae June 24, 2021
written by the partae

LISTEN TO TRAP HOUSE HERE

In 2019 Australia’s own Jazzy K’s soulful tone and empowering lyrics turned the heads of some of the biggest players in the U.S music industry when she released her debut single and addressed her own bullying experiences in her song titled “You Are”.

Jazzy spent many months in LA honing her skills as a singer and songwriter and after a chance meeting with Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds the Aussie singer landed an incredible opportunity to work with him and his team including, producer Antonio Dixon and guitar maestro, Eric Jackson.

The team spent several days in recording sessions laying down tracks and vocals, Jazzy didn’t fail to impress.

Further recording sessions followed with various industry heavyweights and a major record deal was presented to her, but Jazzy made the bold decision to ‘pass’ on what would have been perceived as an opportunity of a lifetime, her instinct kicked in and lead her to continue on her musical journey down a different path and ultimately the concept for “Trap House” was born.

“I was offered an opportunity that seemed amazing,” she said. “It was looking perfect but something didn’t feel right when I came home from LA, I had to make a decision and as I was reflecting on my journey so far I remember that I promised myself I would always trust my instincts and I would never change who I am for the industry. That’s when the lyrics for ‘Trap House’ started coming.”

Whilst back in LA and performing at an industry showcase, she caught the eye of the legendary multi-Grammy award winning producer, My Guy Mars (Jay-Z, Drake, Mary J Blige, Snoop Dogg, Drake). The pair hit it off and lead to the creation of her latest R&B pop single, “Trap House” with an important and inspiring message.

“Trap House” has been released to Australian radio this week.

Vancouver Dark Pop Artist Rayne To Release New EP False Love July 30 - Tops One Million Career Streams to Date

Vancouver Dark Pop Artist Rayne To Release New EP False Love July 30 – Tops One Million Career Streams to Date

by the partae June 24, 2021
written by the partae

Toronto, ON – Vancouver dark pop singer songwriter Rayne is set to release her EP False Love on July 30 via all streaming platforms. At just nineteen, Rayne is gaining attention from fans and the music industry alike. Her catchy, heavy hitting pop choruses, witty, relatable lyrics, and soaring vocals have also caught the ears of Top 40 radio programmers with early support coming from across Canada for her singles ‘Do With That’, and ‘Envious’.

The six song EP opens with ‘Is It Cool If We’re Lonely’, a dark pop track written by Rayne and Tavish Crowe (Carly Rae Jepsen). The song tells the story of an introverted person realizing the importance of being vulnerable and opening up to the people around you.

“My favourite song on the EP is ‘Is It Cool If We’re Lonely’, which I wrote with Tavish over Zoom. It’s the fastest written song to be featured on ‘False Love’ as we had entirely finished writing it in less than two hours,” said Rayne. “As soon as Tavish sent over the demo, I immediately knew I wanted this song on the EP. It’s slightly more dark-pop than all of my prior releases, but it’s a direction that I very much see myself shifting into in the future.”

‘Envious’, the first single from the EP, received over one million radio impressions after being added to KiSS’ radio stations in Toronto, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Kingston. Also written with Tavish Crowe (Carly Rae Jepsen) and Ryan Stewart (Carly Rae Jepsen, Jocelyn Alice), this dance pop track was inspired by a call with one of Rayne‘s friends after she’d seen her ex out with someone new.

“Writing the songs for False Love was really a learning experience for me. I grew so much as an artist and writer over the process, and I think you can hear that growth throughout the tracks”, said Rayne, “There’s some stylistic variety as I was figuring out that really hard dilemma of what I wanted my sound to be. I think I’m a lot closer to that answer now than I was when I first started writing the EP.”

Rayne first started co-writing in late 2018, working with the likes of Tavish Crowe, Andrew Allen, Troy Sampson, Brian Howes, and Ryan Stewart. She quickly found her groove, creating cleverly written songs that balance catchy, heavy hitting choruses and rhythmically driven tracks with lyrics that discuss the darker, sadder aspects of relationships. Her original batch of demos was sent off to an executive at Live Nation Toronto, where she secured her spot playing pre-show for GRAMMY Award winner Billie Eilish in 2019, and later Tyler Shaw in Vancouver.

Her first songs were also sent to Timbaland Productions / Mosley Music Group in LA. After hearing Rayne’s vocals and writing style, they asked her to write topline on tracks by MilliBeatz, a Zurich based producer who has created tracks for Bryson Tiller, Kehlani, Migos, and Rihanna. From there emerged her second single ‘The Low’, which has been streamed over 350,000 times on Spotify since its release early last year.

False Love Track Listing:

1. Is It Cool If We’re Lonely
2. Whos’ Sorry Now
3. Sour Candy
4. Nothing to Bleed For
5. Envious
6. Scar Tissue

GEESE BROOKLYN BAND SIGN TO PARTISAN / PLAY IT AGAIN SAM SHARE DEBUT SONG ‘DISCO’

by the partae June 23, 2021
written by the partae
PRAISE FOR ‘DISCO’
“The song takes absolutely zero musical inspiration from the Studio 54-era, but stretching to nearly seven-minutes, it does share a certain spirit of excess, melding the band’s psychedelic and post-punk influences and simultaneously giving them a sleek, glamorous makeover.”
NME“At almost seven minutes long, ‘Disco’ is a restless, guitar-driven track that devolves into clashing drums and dissonance towards the end.”
Clash

“… in some ways it recalls post-punk and arty ’70s rock, and a whole lot of past New York bands. Geese are drawing on some rich traditions here, but also finding a sound that feels like its on its own wavelength…”
Stereogum

GEESE is a band that begins and ends in Brooklyn, as a project between friends to build a home studio out of a basement. Their debut song ‘Disco‘ (out today via Partisan / Play It Again Sam) is born from the same ambition: make music by any means necessary. They began recording together with sneakers as mic stands and blankets draped over the amps, all within the afternoon following a school day until they ran the risk of noise complaints. ‘Disco’ merges all the restless anxiety and pent-up frustration of trying to figure out life at 18 with a wall-of-sound immediacy and looseness. Curiously alien, yet strangely familiar.

The band elaborates on the song’s origins:

“‘Disco’ was our first big step forward as a band. It’s a very urgent and restless song, which was indicative of all our headspaces at the time. ‘Disco’ has a lot of organized chaos at its core; the music, the lyrics, and even the way we recorded it all speak to a sort of manic energy we were all working through. It’s a song that sounds like it’s perpetually on the verge of collapse–and yet it always manages to keep itself together. There’s a bit of chaos in all of our songs, or a sense that they could explode at any moment. ‘Disco’ represents that the most for us: the little bit of chaos each of us carry and bring to our music.”

Geese will release their debut LP later this year, with more information coming soon.

Damon Albarn announces second solo album alongside title track release

DAMON ALBARN
ANNOUNCES SECOND SOLO ALBUM
THE NEARER THE FOUNTAIN, MORE PURE THE STREAM FLOWS
OUT NOVEMBER 12 ON TRANSGRESSIVE RECORDS

LISTEN TO THE TITLE TRACK NOW

The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows, the new studio album from Damon Albarn, will be released by new label home Transgressive Records on November 12, 2021.

The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows was originally intended as an orchestral piece inspired by the landscapes of Iceland. This last year has seen Albarn return to the music in lockdown and develop the work to 11 tracks which further explore themes of fragility, loss, emergence and rebirth. The result is a panoramic collection of songs with Albarn as storyteller. The album title is taken from a John Clare poem Love and Memory.

Albarn says “I have been on my own dark journey while making this record and it led me to believe that a pure source might still exist.”

In a career of perpetual musical shifts and exploration, the record uncovers yet more ground, finding expansive orchestral arrangements nestling with intimate melodies, discordance brushing up against infectious majesty, all set to some of Albarn’s most arresting vocal performances to date. Much like the beauty and chaos of the natural world it soundtracks, The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows vividly documents the emotional ebb and flow of the human condition, in all its extremes, serving as a soul enriching document for our times.

Alongside a digital release, there will be limited edition vinyl formats, plus CD. There will also be a deluxe version of the album, taking the form of a casebound book with additional photography, original scanned lyrics and artwork from Damon, alongside a white vinyl version of the album, a high quality digital file and a bonus 7” featuring an exclusive song from the recording sessions.

Albarn debuted a set of songs from the album as part of the Live At Worthy Farm event last month, highlights of which can be seen on BBC iPlayer from June 24, ahead of a BBC Two documentary ‘Live At Worthy Farm: Backstage’ on Monday, June 28.

Damon Albarn is a singer, songwriter, producer and composer whose eclectic musical style and observational lyrics have made him one of the UK’s most influential and consistently interesting musicians.

A founder member of Blur, Gorillaz and The Good, The Bad & The Queen, he is the recipient of six Brits, two Ivor Novello Awards and a Grammy Award.

Outside of Blur and Gorillaz, Albarn has a number of other releases, including Mali Music (2002), The Good The Bad and The Queen (2006), Monkey: Journey to the West (2007), Kinshasa One Two (2011), Rocket Juice & The Moon (2012), Dr Dee (2012), Africa Express Presents: Maison Des Jeunes (2013), Africa Express Presents: The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians (2016), Merrie Land (2018), Africa Express Presents: Egoli (2019), as well as his Mercury Award-nominated debut solo album Everyday Robots (2014).

SOUL GLO SIGN WITH EPITAPH RECORDS

RELEASE NEW EP

SOUL GLO BY CHRISTOPHER POSTLEWAITE
Epitaph Records is thrilled to welcome revolutionary Philadelphia hardcore band, Soul Glo to the family.

On Juneteenth, a day celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States, Soul Glo released their new EP “Vol. 2” via Bandcamp. The EP is the follow-up to “Vol.1” (February 2021) which BrooklynVegan called ‘intense, every last word of it.”

Today, the 3-track EP is available on all streaming services. Produced by bassist GG, Soul Glo explore the topics of self-perception, alternative motives of those that consider themselves allies, the destructive idea of romanticism, and self-confidence on their new EP.

CHECK OUT SOUL GLO’S NEW EP NOW

Since their formation in 2014, Soul Glo have used hardcore punk music as a catalyst to speak about the intersectionality of gender and race in the American political landscape, and the black lived experience. Soul Glo’s lyrics are uncompromising, written to raise awareness of social justice issues and designed to make you look inward. “Soul Glo’s stylistic syllabus cross-references D.C. hardcore, West Coast thrash and Midwest screamo, where their music feels like the un-ignorable act of violence that follows after more socially acceptable forms of communication have failed,” notes Pitchfork in their review of the band’s 2020 EP Songs to Yeet at the Sun.

Despite the constant barrage of setbacks, from member changes, to financial strife, to run-ins with the law, Soul Glo are more determined than ever to raise their voice and speak up. “Soul Glo season is upon us all,” adds the band.

Soul Glo is Pierce Jordan (vocals), Ruben Polo (guitar), Gianmarco “GG” Guerra (bass, vocals, programming), and TJ Stevenson (drums).

HELADO NEGRO Shares new single ‘Gemini And Leo’ Announces album Far In, out October 22

by the partae June 22, 2021

Helado Negro has announced his new album Far In which will be released on October 22 via 4AD / Remote Control Records. The album’s lead single ‘Gemini And Leo’ was premiered earlier today on the tastemaker KCRW radio show Morning Becomes Eclectic in Los Angeles. The song is accompanied by an animated music video directed by Jacob Escobedo.

Far In is Helado Negro’s first album on 4AD / Remote Control Records and the seventh full-length album in his catalogue. It follows his breakthrough release This Is How You Smile which was spotlighted as Pitchfork’s #7 Best Album of 2019.

When Roberto Carlos Lange, the musician known as Helado Negro, began writing Far In immediately following the release of This is How You Smile, he could not have predicted that we would soon need to learn how to stay at home and be the stars of our domestic dance floors with intimates and online communities. In the new single ‘Gemini and Leo’, the titular pair stay indoors to discover each other anew with music recalling Roberto’s youth growing up in South Florida listening to 80s club songs, and their return sampled in 90s hip hop. Visions past and future meet in a euphoria of uptempo drums, Jen Wasner’s (Flock of Dimes) funky bass line, and Opal Hoyt’s (Zenizen) galactic swirl of warm and steely synths and bright backing vocals.

Roberto and his partner, the visual artist Kristi Sword, had planned to visit Marfa, Texas for an early 2020 residency to work on their collaborative project Kite Symphony. Once the pandemic hit, they decided to stay in Marfa through the summer, inspiring Roberto to write a significant amount of songs on the upcoming album. He wrote the new song ‘Agosto’ with his thoughts on the humid atmosphere of his hometown where flower petals and fruit fall and sweetly decay on concrete. The song features his longtime friends Buscabulla, no strangers to the melancholy pull of home in a Caribbean climate.

Throughout Roberto’s career, imagined beings, ghosts and haunted machines appear in sci-fi stories and his own conjurings. These tales make themselves at home amongst narratives that invigorate community and solidarity. His songs ‘It’s My Brown Skin’ (2016) and ‘Please Won’t Please’ (2019) assert an affirmation of Latinx identity through recurring images of brown glowing complexion, a perception that is rooted as much in a spiritual consciousness of resilience and protection, as a physical experience. On the new album Far In, Roberto says he “celebrates the ghosts,” embracing pleasure and freedom to follow the metaphysical further; the glow appears without words in new song ‘Brown Fluorescence’ – a minimal arrangement of layered, ethereal, vocal loops. He sings “We grow younger to stay strong,” on ‘Purple Tones’ with the playful bells of steel pan drums and reveling in the creative time-space of twilight and dusk, waking dreams, and transit, the self-dispersing nowhere and anywhere, but the touch of hair maintains an earthly connection to who you are and what you care about.

Driving back to Brooklyn in the fall inspired by his work in the desert, Roberto auspiciously purchased a Rhodes from a friend who 20 years earlier gave him his first synthesiser, an Arp Odyssey 2800. The electric piano was a catalyst that guided much of the remaining songwriting for the album. After time apart from a changed city, his base for fifteen years, ‘Hometown Dream’ and ‘Outside the Outside’, unapologetically look forward to new places and possibilities.

“Escape is never out there, you have to go inward,” Roberto reflects on developing an epic Helado Negro double album during these extraordinary times. Heavy, pulsing, rhythms drive ‘Aureole’ through a dystopian landscape, but as he sings of endless psychological restrictions, the shimmering radiance of expanded realms bursts through. This chiaroscuroeffect suggests a path that isn’t tuning out beneath monumental forces and anxieties, but embracing the dark of the unknown with openness, pleasure, and growth.

PIRRA ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE 'NEVER APART' + EAST COAST SHOWS

PIRRA ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE ‘NEVER APART’ + EAST COAST SHOWS

by the partae June 20, 2021
written by the partae
Alternative indie pop auteurs Pirra have today announced their buoyant new single Never Apart, a synthy adventure produced by Sam Littlemore of Pnau, out June 18.  The group, whose namesake Pirra means moon in Luritja, a language spoken by the Luritja people, are set to hit the road for an east coast run of dates kicking off at Oxford Art Factory (Syd) on September 3 before moving on to The Toff (Mel) on September 10 and finishing up at Suzie Wongs Good Time Bar (Bris) on September 12.

After a year of isolation and anxiety, an exuberant track like Never Apart is a welcome, much-needed release.  It’s an irresistible bop from start to finish – synths bounce energetically as lead vocalist Jess Beck’s clever, hooky melodies earworm themselves into the listener’s memory.  Drawing upon influences such as Northeast Party House, RÜFÜS DU SOL and Running Touch, it’ll have you singing along even through the first listen.

Speaking on the creation of the track, guitarist and synth player James McKendry says, “Never Apart was produced and mixed by Sam Littlemore (aka Sam La More) of Pnau.  He really challenged us to get out of our safe zone.  Never Apart started as an instrumental track Curtis (our bass player) was working on for days.  Eventually he emerged from his music cave and then I wrote the vocal melodies and lyrics.  The lyrics are vaguely about feeling connected to somebody, no matter the distance, but I wanted to make a melody that felt easy to sing along to and that people could find their own meaning to.  We were definitely inspired by Pnau, and had been listening to their album Changa around that time, although we never dreamed we would end up working with Sam Littlemore on this song!”

Pirra are currently signed to CR2 Records in London, who also represent electronic dance heroes Carl Cox and Camelphat.  Reflecting on how the deal came about, James explains, “At the time a publisher and friend of ours Rob Scott knew our music was headed in a dance direction so he got in contact with the head of CR2 Mark Brown and showed him our track Under the Skyline.  Mark loved the track, as well as some of the other demos we sent him so he offered us a record deal.  Since then, it’s been such a thrill to collaborate with some of our heroes and we’re pumped about some upcoming collaborations we hope to announce soon.”

Pirra is James McKendry (guitar, synth), Jess Beck (vocals), Curtis Argent (bass, synth) and Jeffrey Argent (drums)

Never Apart is out now on BLK&WHT RCRDS

UNVEIL FERVENT NEW SINGLE ‘PEOPLE LIKE YOU’ ALONG WITH MYSTIFYING ACCOMPANYING VIDEO

SUPPORT FOR ‘PEOPLE LIKE YOU’

“Driving forwards with a still-present rock rhythm but in a way that keeps it all at bay, with vocals taking the lead.”
Pilerats (AUS)

Following the release of the supercharged single bright park to represent breaking free.”

Previous single ‘Balance’ was widely supported by the likes of Spotify, Apple Music, triple j and The Faction. It also received online praise from tastemakers New Noise Magazine (USA), Surviving the Golden Age (USA), Hysteria Mag and HEAVY Mag.

Clay J Gladstone are an enthusiastic dynamism in the Sydney punk rock scene, consisting of former and current members of Buried In Verona, Resist The Thought and Caulfield. Since their inception, they have traversed the East-Coast of Australia, playing multiple sold-out shows at bars and all ages events.e ‘Balance’, Sydney-based punk rock group Clay J Gladstone have today returned with their scorching new single and video for ‘People Like You’ – produced and mixed by Daniel Antix at DefWolf Studios (Pist Idiots, SCABZ).

‘People Like You’ begins with unwavering bass and sedative vocals as the tranquil verse is kept at a steady pace, before the song launches into its merciless chorus complete with blistering guitars and vigorous drums. A half-time bridge initiates avid variance before assertively chanted gang vocals drive the song towards its immense finale.

“The track is about escaping an abusive relationship and going out in a blaze of glory,” says lead singer Clay J. “Being told you’re not good enough only to realise you’ve been bullied into submission and need to cut them lose.”

Alongside the release is the cinematic music video – filmed, directed and edited by Adam Williamson from AWOL Productions. Featuring eye catching visuals and set designs, the band perform the song throughout the clip while the plot depicts the song’s fundamental message, with each scene and set design representative of the lyrical themes.

“The story line follows the concept of the track: breaking free of an abusive relationship,” explains Clay J. “There are 3 locations to depict the relative stages in the relationship. Firstly, the light box to depict being stuck in cage; secondly, the dark bedroom with photos on the wall acting as memories; and thirdly, the

MAYA JANE COLES X M.F.S: OBSERVATORY ‘KNOW ABOUT’ EP
I/AM/ME
OUT NOW
Continuing Maya Jane Coles’ impressive mastery of Techno, the approachable and intense double A-side EP pairs Maya’s foundational cross-genre production qualities with the M.F.S: Observatory signature big room house sound; a driving and consistently authentic style that they have explored at a notably rapid pace via releases on Green Velvets’ Relief, Skint,  and many more of the scenes respected labels.

Maya recently curated a four live stream reisdency for Beatport which included M.F.S: Observatory’s Matthias Turchetti and Francesco Cozzolino as part of her takeover as “Rising Stars”. Other guests on the stream ranged from Cinthie and Anja Schneider through to Truncate and Dense & Pika.

The EP’s release not only demonstrates Maya in demand production credentials and collaborative attitude but follows on from a flurry of recent lockdown activity and creative output, including the huge drop of the animated video drop to her Nocturnal Sunshine Pull Up” ft Young M.A & Gangsta Boo and an alternative release under her CAYAM alias on Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave – currently riding high on the underground techno charts.

The relentlessness of “Know About” is fortified by its sturdy techno foundations, doused In Maya’s trademark un-easing melodics, while the production pair are joined on “Watch & Learn” by Chicago-born Mexican-American artist Kid Enigma who’s hip-house inspired vocals bounce hypnotically across an equally lucid groove.

Both artists remind us that tougher house music and more melodic-focused impulses can work beautifully in tandem and with a step closer to the return of the dancefloors we should expect to hear these from a dark club corner very soon.

@movetherecord

Originally launched in 2020, Move The Record was devised in response to the uncertain future and economic strain that independent record stores worldwide have faced due to the pandemic.
This summer the streaming initiative will return for 4 consecutive Thursdays from July 1st — 4x 6-hour broadcasts from stores around the world featuring residents and special guests, with a view to driving online sales and footfall to shops that can open, and to encourage customers to invest in their local spot.
Supporters can also contribute and buy merch via a Crowdfunder, with 100% of proceeds to be split evenly across the stores.
The first edition last year featured Phonica (London), KMA60 (Berlin), Subwax (Barcelona), Deficit (Moscow), Halcyon (New York), Hâus (Buneos Aires) and more, with artists such as Bradley Zero, Dana Ruh, Steffi, Prins Thomas, Josh Cheon, Fred P all performing.
Edition #2 stores include Kristina Records (London), Café Artum (Birmingham), Mad Piano (Bucharest), Seawolf Records (Amsterdam), NUT Records (Barcelona), La Rama (Montreal) and more.
Edition #2 performers include Prosumer, Ingi Visions, Adam Shelton, Carista, San Proper, Willow, Hon, Anna Wall, Kerrie, Glowzi, Jus-Ed, Nick Anthony Simoncino, Molly and more.

Check out the Edition #2 video here, wherein diggers and store owners alike share their insight on these hubs of community and discovery.
