Presented by ALWAYS LIVE & Triple R Saturday, November 5 | Northcote Theatre, Melbourne | Tickets In June 1992, seventeen-year-old, self-described “pimple-faced nerd” Guy Blackman put out a compilation cassette of bands from his Perth hometown called Bright Lights, Small City. He had to use fake ID to attend the launch of the cassette at the Shenton Park Hotel.
Thirty years later, Chapter Music is still alive and kicking, having endured and blossomed across eras such as 90s lo-fi jangle, 2000s post-punk revival, 2010s lo-fi jangle revival and 2020s post-punk revival-revival. Chapter has now spent three decades as a tireless champion of Australian independent music and one of Australia’s longest running and most influential labels. Guy moved to Melbourne in 1995, where Ben O’Connor joined the fold as Chapter work and life partner. There was a six-year period where records were pressed by hand by Guy at vinyl plant Corduroy Records, then a spell in Japan where Ben & Guy documented the amazing music they discovered there. Back in Melbourne since 2004, they have released earth-shaking artists like Beaches, Crayon Fields, Dick Diver, The Goon Sax, Gregor, Kath Bloom, Laura Jean, Pikelet, Sweet Whirl, Smokey, Teether & Kuya Neil, Twerps, and many more.

Awakenings makes a big splash for its 25th Anniversary, announcing no less than nine events during this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event. This year the iconic Gashouder in Amsterdam will once again be the backdrop for six ADE Awakenings events, and after a successful series of shows in 2021, the Ziggo Dome also joins the program for another three shows, of which the Friday event will be announced soon. With headliners like Amelie Lens, Joris Voorn, Carl Cox, Charlotte de Witte, and many more of the biggest names in the scene, Awakenings promises to be the highlight of an already unprecedented Amsterdam Dance Event.
Awakenings’ annual programming for ADE is known for impressive techno events, featuring the biggest names in the scene at iconic venues. Awakenings’ ADE Opening Night will take place on October 19 at Amsterdam’s Gashouder, the techno temple where it all began for Awakenings. The event will kick off a wild week of shows with Hector Oaks, Nina Kraviz and Cera Khin, as well as Drumcode Records boss Adam Beyer, ANNA, Pan-Pot, Richie Hawtin, Amoral, Kobosil, Joseph Capriati, Dave Clarke, and Speedy J. Besides the standout night programming, daytime events will be hosted on October 22 and 23 by none other than Spectrum’s labelboss Joris Voorn and Awakenings resident Amelie Lens, bringing names like Ben Klock b2b Marcel Dettmann, ONYVAA, 999999999, and Helena Hauff to complete the 2022 Gashouder line-up.
But that’s not all, as Awakenings will also be taking to Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome for ADE’s biggest techno event. On Saturday, October 22, scene pioneer and Awesome Soundwaves co-owner Carl Cox will take over the Ziggo Dome during the day for ‘Carl Cox Invites’, where Reinier Zonneveld and KiNK, among others, will treat fans with astounding live performances. In the evening, techno queen Charlotte de Witte will take over the decks, bringing raw sound to the Ziggo Dome with her cohort of KNTXT label artists, including FJAAK, I Hate Models, and Indira Paganotto.
After a traditional Easter weekend filled with events, this year in both Spaarnwoude and the Gashouder, as well as a successful first edition of Awakenings Summer Festival, with three days of camping in Hilvarenbeek, the organisation is now preparing for an ADE like they have never done before. The Foreign Brothers and The Operatives are back co-presenting the third iteration of FLOW Festival; a day of music and arts synergy at the Footscray Community Arts. FLOW Festival this year will be part of the ALWAYS LIVE program, the first and largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, dedicated exclusively to live contemporary music and turning the volume up across Melbourne and Victoria, the live music capital.

Fresh from their tour dates in WA, QLD and an explosive performance at this year’s Byron Bay Blues Festival, Sydney/Byron Bay collective CARAVÃNA SUN are thrilled to announce they will be headlining their own curated all-ages Summer Escape Festival on Saturday, September 3. They’ve also added a Melbourne show at Howler on Saturday, September 10 before rounding off their tour in Sydney at The Factory Theatre on August 27.
CARAVÃNA SUN will be playing tracks from their newly released 10 track album ‘Burning Palms’, which was written and recorded all within the past 2 years; it’s an album that sees the band return to their roots and find appreciation in nature as it was recorded in a secluded space deep in the heart of the Blue Mountains, NSW. Produced by CARAVÃNA SUN, and mixed by Andy Lawson (Death By Denim, Eskimo Jo, End of Fashion, Little Birdy) at Debaser Studio, Perth with additional mixing and engineered by Ian Pritchett.
CARAVÃNA SUN have always been known for the raw energy of their live shows. From the huge crowd singalongs to the quiet, soulful heart moments, and sun-drenched reggae to sweeping synth indie groove, they always keep their focus on the connection to their audience.

Awakenings goes all out to celebrate its 25th anniversary. After 2 years of Covid-induced drought, Awakenings came back in 2022 with a double weekender: 4 nights and 2 days during the Easter weekend and a three-day Summer edition on a brand new location with a first ever campsite from July 29th to 31st.
We attended Awakenings Summer Festival and saw a major expansion. The biggest techno festival in the world added a campsite and an extra day to the techno weekender, making Awakenings the first multi-day techno festival in the Netherlands.
Even a historic organisation like Awakenings needs some changes every now and then. The festival that takes place in summer has been relocated from its historical spot in Amsterdam to the south of the Netherlands. The multi-day festival took place at the breathtaking venue of Beekse Bergen, a safari resort where the imposing futuristic stage architecture creates a clear contrast with the wild green woods and delightful lakes and water spread in the festival area.
This created the perfect background for the festival. Over 130 of the best international techno artists performed at the 11 majestically designed stages. The large lineup allowed an extremely diverse selection of techno and electronic music. Techno legends like Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, and Seth Troxler shared the stage with hot DJs such as Amelie Lens, Tale of Us, and Maceo Plex. The menu also included a more industrial and dark techno lineup with Dr. Rubinstein, Adiel, I Hate Models, 999999999, as well as house and disco vibes from the Blessed Madonna, Dam Swindle, and Denis Sulta. This diversity allowed for dancing to different styles of music attendants like.
Along with the music, the numerous art shows and installations added a unique and out-of-this-world character to the festival. Throughout the day, party-goers can easily bump into interactive live art performances, immersive multi-sensory sound and light installations, optical and water shows, making the festival a full artistic experience.
The Awakenings organisation has also put a great effort into sustainability, social responsibility, and inclusivity. Recycle stations were spread all around the festival areas to make sure that the waste is reduced to the minimum. Hungry festival-goers could enjoy healthy and vegan options at the numerous food stands. Last but not least, people were able to contribute to relevant causes with donations to reduce their CO2 emissions and to back associations supporting humanitarian help in Ukraine and the LGBTQ+ rights.
As usual, people are what makes this festival truly special! Awakenings is one of the world’s leading techno festivals and attracts an extremely international crowd. Out of the 100.000 people who attended over the weekend more than 75 nationalities were represented. The carefully styled outfits, shiny clothing and bright smiles and of course the best techno there’s to offer brought together people from all around the world to dance together once again after a long time of pandemic.
The wildlands lineup is here! Taking place in December/January in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, the festival has announced their lineup featuring Dom Dolla, Diplo, Yeat, Denzel Curry, Aitch, Kaytranada, Tkay Maidza, Honey Dijon and BENEE.
Joining them will also be Yung Lean, Shygirl, Remi Wolf, Kanine, SG Lewis & many more.
The historically sold-out event has opened presale registrations, registrations close 16th August.
The festival will kick off in Perth on December 30, heading to Adelaide on January 2nd and finally Brisbane on January 7th. From 13-16 October, Central Victoria’s biggest music conference is set to return for its second year. Designed to bring together the Victorian regional and Melbourne music communities, the conference features panels, workshops, networking events, and a dedicated youth program.

The full program for Gold Sounds 2022 will be announced in late August, with tickets on sale 1 September, 2022.
The event will include collaborations with APRA AMCOS, Australia Council for the Arts, Community Media Training Organisation, FReeZA, Music Victoria, Regional Arts Victoria, Support Act, and more to be announced.
Last year’s inaugural conference featured keynote speeches by industry heavyweights Jen Cloher and Liz Stringer alongside workshops run by two of the region’s biggest stars, Dallas Woods and Jess Ribeiro. Held as Victoria was emerging from lockdown, the Conference was part of Music Victoria’s Regional Music Development program and attracted more than 100 people from the music industry and community across the weekend and won the Mount Alexander Shire Council Community Event of the Year.

Phil Jamieson is the consummate frontman leading his legendary rock band Grinspoon, who I had the pleasure of seeing headline the Springloaded Festival earlier this year.
Tonight, Phil Jamieson performed as a solo artist performing his debut solo album ‘Somebody Else’. In a more cozy intimate venue, the Curtin Hotel, Phil and the band came onstage to a rapturous applause and cheering. Along with guitar sideman Davey Lane of You am I (and The Pictures who opened the night), they launched into the guitar heavy track on “Trouble”.
Tonight we got to see and hear Phil’s songwriting and creativity extend to more melodic pop, from the catchy “Kapow”, indie pop “Rebecca”, the western “YCBM”, to the brit-rock album opener “Somebody Else”. Brilliant stuff.
Celebrating the release of their long awaited debut album, King Stingray will rip ’round the country this October, on their largest national tour to date, bringing their good vibes and huge choruses to the masses.
Kicking things off at The Triffid in Brisbane, the band will then make their way south to Sydney’s Manning Bar and Melbourne’s Croxton before rounding things up at The Gov in Adelaide, Fremantle’s Freo.Social, and ending things back in the NT at Darwin Railway Club.

The band have also just dropped a video for the album opener, Lupa. Written by lead singer Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu, ‘Lupa’ translates from Yolŋu Matha languages as ‘Poor man, rich life’ and holds a fist in the air for marginalised people around the world.
Yirrŋa, a Gumatj clan songman, says the intention behind the song is “to make people happy and proud”. Lupa is catchy as hell, and somehow immediately relatable, even if it’s sung in a language group spoken by around just 16,000 people in Arnhem Land.
Filmed and directed by long time friend of the band, Sam Brumby, the Lupa video whisks us away to the band’s stunning hometown of Yirrkala to celebrate the lupa way of life – being financially broke but rich in friends, family and culture.
