Ciao AIRBEAT ONE 2022 – Over 200,000 fans and 300 DJs celebrated the come-back of the mega festival

by the partae July 15, 2022
written by the partae

“Ciao Neustadt-Glewe – Arrivederci AIRBEAT ONE 2022” was Sunday’s motto after four days of incredible electronic sounds at the Neustadt-Glewe airfield in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. From an audience of 20,000 visitors at the PreOpening to 65,000 who attended Sunday’s epic closing, more than 200,000 fans were in attendance over the four days, traveling from more than 50 countries around the world for the 19th edition of AIRBEAT ONE. After a two-year pandemic enforced hiatus, the festival was a spectacular successful comeback. With more than 300 international DJs across the 6 stages, this year’s festival officially had the largest most musically diverse electronic music lineup in AIRBEAT ONE history, more acts than ever before played to the huge crowds at Neustadt-Glewe, which for an entire weekend was recreated as a spectacular Italian city. The theme of this year’s four-day open-air event was “Italy” and in honor of the theme, four of the six large stages shone thematically in reference to the great mythology of the country that lies south of the Alps.

Electronic music fans from every continent travelled to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to celebrate AIRBEAT ONE’S 19th birthday, along with many of the world’s greatest living DJs. From Australia to America, from Japan to Mexico, from Norway to South Africa, people travelled on pilgrimage to the grand airfield in Neustadt- Glew to celebrate in peace, and to enjoy a carefree 96 hours of exuberant hedonism, beats, and bass.

The huge showpiece of the festival each year is the enormous MainStage, which never fails to capture the attention of the hundreds of thousands of festival-goers in attendance. The detail invested in the main stage was incredible, as a huge collage of monumental images from this year’s theme country. This year festival-goers danced amongst four main Italian cities, Milan Cathedral, the Coliseum in Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Rialto Bridge in Venice formed the backdrop of the MainStage, setting the scene for the world’s biggest DJs to play some of the greatest electronic music tracks in the industry. With a width of 160 meters and a height of nearly 50 meters, AIRBEAT ONE remains one of the largest mainstages anywhere in Europe. So much so that AIRBEAT ONE’s MainStage stands at the maximum height available for any festival in Europe due to the size of the machines and equipment available for the construction of all festival stages.

The 30-meter tall Hardstyle Stage was inspired by Roman Gladiators and designed for the first time by the AIRBEAT ONE Festival designers themselves. From this year on, fans of the harder sound of electronic music can look forward to a completely new stage every year to match the festival theme. In 2022, the helmet and swords of ancient Roman warriors were enthroned above the DJ booth. From the Terminal Stage, a huge mask from the Venetian Carnival looked down on visitors in Europe’s largest circus tent.

With the Arena Stage, a completely new techno area celebrated its premiere at the AIRBEAT ONE 2022 Festival. On the first day of the festival, Boris Brejcha took over the scepter with his FCKING Serious Brand and fitted in perfectly with this year’s theme thanks to his iconic Venetian mask. On Friday and Saturday, the Elrow Showcase featured the best acts of the entire techno scene, including Charlotte de Witte, Fisher, and Paul Kalkbrenner. The theme of this stage was Rome Olympics. In keeping with the Italian theme, the guests and music fans in attendance celebrated together with 60 entertainers and confetti, Elrow remains an unparalleled show of fantasy, fantastic music, and fun.

The Second Stage led visitors into a psychedelic parallel world inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci and bright vibrant colours. Together with the Lidl Stage in the Main Camping area, almost all styles of electronic music were represented, played to an ecstatic crowd across a total of six floors, from EDM to trance and progressive, from hardstyle, hardcore, and gabber to techno, minimal, house and psytrance.

With its unique main stage design and one of the most impressive DJ lineups in Europe, AIRBEAT ONE has cemented its place in the top 3 of any festival across the continent, and easily in the top ten coolest festivals in the world. The biggest DJs in the world regularly pay homage to the festival. US Superstar DJ Steve Aoki said: “This is my favourite AIRBEAT ONE show I have ever done.” And Armin Van Buuren enthused, “I love AIRBEAT ONE, it feels like the oldest festival ever.” The exceptional reputation and international standing of the festival is also recognized from the fact that international superstar DJs Kygo and Marshmello performed exclusively in Germany at this year’s 2022 festival.

A total of 37 DJs currently ranked in DJ Mag’s illustrious Top 100 DJ list played at this year’s AIRBEAT ONE. A record that no festival in Germany has ever achieved before. Five of the superstar DJs sent the 30,000 music fans into raptures of excitement during Wednesday’s pre-opening. In addition to Tiesto and Marshmello, the highlights of the first day of the festival included Boris Brejcha, Brennan Heart, Robin Schulz, Timmy Trumpet, Vini Vici, and W&W.

The German festival debut of Norwegian superstar Kygo was spectacular. From „Firestone“ to „Stargazing“ and „Remind Me To Forget“ to „Higher Love“, he certainly showcased all his incredible hit songs, and the crowd reciprocated with huge reactions. The crowd reaction was so loud and passionate, that it felt that the noise could have been heard as far away as Italy. The AIRBEAT ONE festival crowd was honored to be treated to the premiere of Kygo’s new single „Lost Without You“, which was released on Friday in unison with his mesmerizing festival performance.

Charlotte de Witte, Paul Kalkbrenner, Oliver Heldens, Danny Avila, Will Sparks, Alok, Fedde le Grand, Dillon Francis (exclusive German performance), Tchami, Ferry Corsten, and VIZE really encouraged the AIRBEAT crowd until the finale on Day 2. Steve Aoki and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike DJs considered the best in the world by many, played one after another, shaking the airfield to its core, the trio treating the ecstatic crowd to a German exclusive and extremely rare 3 Are Legends festival set.

Saturday deliciously delivered with Claptone, Fisher, Marianna Bo, DJ Snake, Martin Solveig, Afrojack, Don Diablo, Lost Frequencies, and KSHMR, each and all superstar DJs of the highest order. Dutch Superstar and many times voted Number 1 DJ in the World, Armin van Buuren captivated the AIRBEAT ONE crowd, with massive tracks such as „Blah Blah Blah“, „Ping Pong“ to “Repeat After Me”, he played countless festival hits and so much more, even treating the AIRBEAT ONE crowd to the premiere of his new single “Superman”, for the first time live in Germany. Afterward, fireworks lit up the sky, leaving 65,000 fans in open-mouthed awe in front of the MainStage, an incredible festival moment, contained within the 19th edition of a festival with so many unforgettable moments.

More than 200,000 visitors from more than 50 nations across four days were undoubtedly overjoyed to finally be allowed to party carefree at a festival again for the first time in two years. Neustadt-Glewe once again welcomed the world with open arms. The residents celebrated at the airfield together with the guests on Wednesday and Thursday. For years they have been invited by the organizers to the pre-opening and the opening of the festival.

Police, rescue workers, and other authorities involved were on hand with help, advice, and support but in a true expression of festival spirit received happy and respectful cooperation from everybody at the festival.

As the 19th edition of the AIRBEAT ONE Festival closed, not only was the date for the 20th anniversary announced but so was next year’s festival theme. From July 5th to July 9th, 2023, the electronic music world in Neustadt-Glewe will celebrate the “Home Edition”, a theme chosen as the 20th celebration will be celebrated at home surrounded by festival friends. Advance sales for the momentous 20-year festival anniversary will begin this September 3, 2022.

Banks Arcade Share New Single & Video ‘Used’

BANKS ARCADE

RELEASE NEW SINGLE & VIDEO
‘USED‘

NEW ALBUM ‘FUTURE LOVERS‘ OUT FRIDAY 29 JULY
Image: Neal Walters

Set to release their debut album Future Lovers on Friday 29 July via UNFD, Melbourne-via-Auckland heavy agents Banks Arcade are igniting the lead up to their maiden LP today via Used, a brand new bouncy ode to self doubt in the digital age.

Ramping up the energy following their previous introspective single Be Someone, Used is a high octane blend of alt rock riffage, spitfire vocals and sprightly melodics, with the accompanying music video capturing the band in full film grain-soaked and CCTV glory amid the chant-worthy chorus.

“I wrote Used with nothing but rage in my heart after spending the day literally doom scrolling for 7 hours straight,” says vocalist Joshua O’Donnell of the new track’s inception. “It’s a million questions about the future, it’s anxiety, it’s an angsty rant, and it screams at you ‘I don’t know if this shit is gonna get better but god I hope it does’. The song dances with the feelings of failure from the perspective of someone who believes they are on the brink of success but can’t stop doubting themselves.”

Armed with a dazzling array of metal, electronica, hip hop and more, Future Lovers is primed to stun new and old Banks Arcade fans alike, while also leaving the metaphorical door wide open for heightened innovation and explosive sonic palettes in the not-too-distant future.

And while all eyes are currently on the future of Banks Arcade, the group’s recent powerhouse showing in the UK at both The Great Escape Festival and Download Festival also further cemented the quartet’s electrifying live presence, dazzling with their energy and no holds barred tunes alongside 400 up and coming artists from around the globe in Brighton for The Great Escape, and taking full flight in Donington for Download amongst the likes of Iron Maiden, Deftones, Megadeth and Sepultura.

Fans can catch Banks Arcade currently on the road with Thornhill, Dayseeker and Gravemind around Australia this July, with the group also set for a mammoth 27-date regional tour supporting In Hearts Wake, alongside RedHook and Pridelands.

The Chats Drop New Tune ‘I’ve Been Drunk In Every Pub In Brisbane’

by the partae July 12, 2022
written by the partae

THE CHATS ALSO ANNOUNCED AS MAIN SUPPORT
TO GUNS N’ ROSES ON AU/NZ TOUR

Queensland-based punk trio, The Chats have released a rocking new track from their forthcoming second album, GET F*CKED set for release worldwide on August 19th via Bargain Bin Records. The album’s release will be followed by a headlining tour (now taking in Adelaide) throughout September and a much-coveted support slot on the forthcoming Guns N’ Roses Australia/New Zealand tour.

Clocking in at just 89 seconds, the rip-roaring, ‘I’ve Been Drunk In Every Pub In Brisbane’ is an entirely unironic celebration of frontman Eamon Sandwith’s first year or two in his new home city.

Watch the video shot under the influence by the band and their house mate, Rick – who is also in a band with Eamon and Josh called Rick and the Sickos.

“Brisbane is quite a bit hotter than the rest of the country,” says Eamon, “so it’s one of those places where it’s more acceptable to start drinking earlier. I reckon there would be 900 or so pubs that you would have to hit, and I have actually been to a good chunk of them, but if you were go to all of them, it would be hard to even remember which ones you’d been to, and which ones you hadn’t, especially if you’d got fking pissed.”

Undeterred and now stocked to overflowing with frustration and fury, The Chats are about to strike back with their second long-player called GET F*CKED – an incendiary, hyper-adrenalized blitz from punk heaven, showcasing an electrifying all-killer-no-filler 13 tracks which perfectly capture the band’s explosive energy. It is, quite simply, another laugh-out-loud, pogo-through-the-floorboards stroke of motherf*cking genius.

Now with two full albums’ worth of all-new road-ready hyper-melodic punk-rock-‘n’-roll bangers up their sleeve, the band are set to tour across the globe this year and whip up all the pogo-party euphoria necessary to kill off COVID-19 for keeps. After all the incarceration and boredom, The Chats are in peak match fitness to deliver the excitement we all crave for the months ahead.

Pre-order the new album GET F*CKED at https://www.thechatslovebeer.com.

THE TERRYS SHARE STIRRING NEW SINGLE ‘ROLLING STONE’ REGIONAL EAST COAST TOUR ON NOW

by the partae July 9, 2022

PRAISE FOR THE TERRYS

“You know you’re in for a good time with The Terrys”
Nick Findlay (triple j)

“Your new favourite surfy indie outfit”
triple j Unearthed

“The Terrys deliver a rabid punk edge”
NME Australia

“Rapidly rising”
Heavy Magazine

“If you haven’t quite gotten around The Terrys yet, you’re missing one of the most exciting and talked about – new bands from regional New South Wales”
Pilerats

“The future is high as hell”
Life Without Andy

Fast-rising surf rock group The Terrys, today continue their steady stream of new music, with the moving ‘Rolling Stone‘. LISTEN HERE.

Where ‘Waiting For You‘ reaffirmed The Terrys brand of energetic, sun-dappled hooks, ‘Rolling Stone‘ signals new creative corners for the band. Here they build replete vocals on textured layers of instrumentation that shines through their token, magnetic riffs. ‘Rolling Stone‘ is a melancholic anthem where decisions need to be made, before washing away in a grunge-filled breakdown.

Speaking to the release The Terrys share, “We wrote and recorded this song in the same day. Emotions were pretty high in the session and the song just came out. It’s a bit slower than the rest of the album we’ve been recording (but more on that later) and definitely the most sentimental. Lyrically, the song speaks for itself.”

Hot off the release of ‘Waiting For You‘, The Terrys strengthened their hold across national press, with full playlisting via triple j and Unearthed, RAGE and MTV, including airplay across community radio that boosted the group to #4 most played on the AMRAP Charts, including clamour from NME and widespread support across DSPs including Local Noise, Rock Out, The Local List, Indie Arrivals, Fresh Finds AU + NZ and New Music Friday AU + NZ.

Recently The Terrys announced a host of regional tour dates across so-called Australia’s east coast – for all remaining dates and all tour routing info, SEE BELOW.

‘Rolling Stone‘ is out now via Domestic La La, buy/stream it here.

by the partae July 7, 2022
written by the partae
Secret Sounds presents
SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS
Friday 22 to Sunday 24 July 2022
SET TIMES, SITE MAP, LINEUP CHANGE & MORE
We’re on the home stretch team – in just a couple of weeks you and your pals will be pulling up at North Byron Parklands with 2+ years of fresh festival outfits in tow, ready to make some of your best live music memories yet at Splendour in the Grass 2022.

But before you start loading the car, you best get planning your time at the ultimate music lovers reunion with the festival SET TIMES & EVENT MAP! Yeah, it’s finally happening!

The best way to program your party is with the Splendour app, which includes a planner that allows you to select all the artists, talks, performances and workshops you want to be at and creates a personalised schedule, right in the palm of your hand. The app is also your go to destination for all the latest event info, artist profiles and more. The Splendour app is available now for both iOS and Android, update or download it now so you’re ready!

While you’ve got your organising hat on, get your transport sorted too. No matter your preferred method of movement, Splendour has you covered with loads of options to get you to and from the festival. Confirm your plans now so you can really focus on the important things like what you’re going to wear, what you’ll sing at karaoke and whether to eat the Byron Bay Donut or the gozleme.

Still need somewhere to stay? ICYMI, there is a limited amount of camping available at Splendour’s new satellite campground just ten mins down the road at Byron Events Farm (BEF). Getting a lift? BEF will also be the new home of Splendour’s Drop Off / Pick Up and Park n Ride where you’ll then catch a shuttle to the festival. A friendly reminder that BEF campers and those utilising Drop Off / Pick Up & Park n Ride must pre-purchase a bus ticket online before boarding.

While you’re at it, don’t forget to pre-purchase your vehicle pass or you’ll be charged double the price if you arrive at the festival without one, so hop to it now! For more info about this, bus timetables, bus tickets, vehicle passes and all other transport info, head to splendourinthegrass.com. You so prepared!

Splendour has received word that sadly Surfaces, Mako Road and Adrian Eagle are no longer able to make it to the festival. In light of this, irrepressible Fremantle five piece Pond and rapper on the rise Tasman Keith have been added to the lineup!

From their standout Splendour performance in 2019 to touring with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, MGMT and Flaming Lips, Pond’s live resume is ever-expanding and has seen them stun crowds at festivals around the world including Glastonbury, Coachella, Primavera and more. They’ve sold out countless venues around the globe from New York’s Bowery Ballroom to Paris’ La Gaite Lyrique and London’s O2 Forum. Their growing catalogue includes nine studio albums. The latest of which, 9, has them flying closer than ever before to the creative supernova that has blazed across so much of their music. Don’t miss what is sure to be one of the weekend’s highlight performances when Pond play the Amphitheatre on Sunday 24 July.

Tasman Keith is a rapper determined to use his platform as an unstoppable, undeniable voice for the voiceless. From syrupy 90s West Coast synths, to neo-funk, skittering trap hi-hats and emotive R&B, his music defies categorisation and has garnered praise from the likes of Billboard, Rolling Stone, NME, triple j, Spotify, Apple and more. Tasman collaborated with Midnight Oil on their release ‘First Nation’ appearing on the #1 ARIA Award Winning record The Makaratta Project and has performed on ABC music shows The Sound and The Set. He most recently played an intimate set live at triple j studios in celebration of NAIDOC Week. Tasman’s highly anticipated debut album A Colour Undone drops 8 July and is this week’s triple j Feature Album, featuring collaborations with Genesis Owusu, Jessica Mauboy, Kwame, Phil Fresh & Thandi Phoenix.  Catch his incredible showmanship when he opens the Mix Up stage on Saturday 23 July.

Splendour is a big weekend and it’s important to schedule in some R&R time. Grab a coffee and sit back with Splendour’s official newspaper. Splendour’s official onsite paper published by the legends at Monster Children is back, only now it’s one big newspaper instead of three. Also, they’ve renamed it: The Splendour Weekender. It rhymes! The 2022 Splendour Weekender features interviews with a bunch of artists from the lineup,  along with that bloke from Redfern Electrical. Then there’s a big poster in the middle by artist Adam Leng, a food guide, an art guide, some funny classifieds, a weekend horoscope from Bertrand Starman, and a bunch of other fun stuff. Keep your eyes peeled for it!

The final few weeks of Splendour countdown got you feeling the festival FOMO? Never fear, there are a limited number of pre-loved tickets currently available in the Splendour resale. Jump on and purchase now so you can be there for one all time weekend of live music and so much more. We can already taste the Strummers!

SYDNEY ARTIST ANIESZKA INJECTS SOUL AND CULTURE INTO NEW SINGLE ‘HUMAN’ FROM FORTHCOMING EP PROJECT HUMAN

by the partae July 6, 2022
written by the partae

The way Sydney R&B artist Anieszka has emerged as a stunning presence in the past year and a half has been nothing short of impressive. Her music, an effortless blend of striking influences and a fresh, contemporary view on the genre; Anieszka has been consistently building a body of work that reflects the sound and culture that has raised her, as well as reflecting the passionate approach she brings to her writing now.

New single ‘Human’ is the latest from Anieszka and the lead single from her forthcoming EP project of the same name. A love letter to the personal facets that make us who we are as individuals and interconnected beings, ‘Human’ is a captivating creation from the young artist, who has already been impressing fans and industry alike with a string of recent releases including ‘Motive’, ‘Tender Without You’ and ‘Choices’

‘Human’ has a dreamlike haze to it, threaded through it we hear Anieszka’s hypnotic vocals and elements of her Mauritian culture in a beautiful way. Working on the music at Offbeat Collective Studios with producer and fellow artist Chelsea Warner, and engineer Diego Raposo on mixing and mastering, Anieszka describes the process and final outcome as one she was fulfilled and excited by.

“I have wanted to incorporate traditional Mauritian elements into my music for years, and when I started writing this one I knew Chelsea Warner had to be part of the creating process. I wanted the ravanne (traditional Mauritian drum) to be at the core of the song, and to almost be a never-ending rhythm, kind of like a heartbeat. We also have the maravanne (also known as a kayamb) which is a traditional percussion instrument, and the triangle. This trio forms the basis for Mauritian Sega music.

I’ve never heard a fluid blend of R&B/Soul with a traditional Mauritian beat, and I wanted to be the first to do it. I’m excited for people to learn more about my culture, and to connect with the song on a pure human level too.”

ANIESZKA

On the track itself, and further to the EP, Anieszka explores the nuances and complexities of the human condition. The pressure we put on ourselves to be at our best form at all times, with little to no room for breathing and alleviation.

“We are imperfect beings, yet we often focus so much on the need to be perfect and something other than who we are. The ways of the world and society often dim the light we have within us. This song speaks to that inner child, and the innocence and hope we all once had. It’s an anthem to step into our light and our power, and to practice self-acceptance, self-love and healing along the way. ‘Can you see through my flaws? I am human but whole’ – we all have flaws, but they don’t make us broken or incomplete, they are simply layers to a whole being.”

ANIESZKA

The road to the HUMAN EP project has already been paved with success and moments of evolution and elevation for Anieszka. She has received praise and placements across national radio through Triple J First Plays and Unearthed premieres, BBC Radio and Rinse FM; while FBi Radio has named Anieszka as ‘Independent Artist of the Week’. Anieszka’s music has courted playlist success with both Spotify and Apple Music, while editorially, she has been featured across titles including Acclaim Mag, RUSSH, Life Without Andy, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers and more.

With over 9000 monthly streams and notable shows at The Vanguard and King St. Carnival to her name, Anieszka is set for another fruitful year of new music and anticipates more new fans getting to know her through this music: reflective of her pure love for the craft.

PRAISE FOR ANIESZKA

“Her powers of sonic healing knows no bounds…”

Life Without Andy

“Another slice from Anieszka that glides into the room and makes it all look so easy.”

Triple J, Declan Byrne

“The Australian/Mauritian singer channels the same cathartic energy as US heavyweights like Summer Walker and SZA, tunneling into the healing properties of low-slung R&B and giving them a rich, Australian twist that sets herself apart.”

Pilerats

“Anieszka dives deep with her lyricism, creating an evocative experience, intertwining our mind and body.”

Purple Sneakers

Black Veil Brides @ The Croxton Bandroom, 3rd July 2022

by the partae July 5, 2022
written by the partae

Photography & Words: Darren Chan

After a series of rescheduled dates, Californian metalcore outfit Black Veil Brides finally made it to Australia. The second show of the day at the Croxton Bandroom saw the venue full of eager fans.

And the band more than delivered. It was a sledgehammer wall of sound from the opening chugging riff of “Faithless”.  This was not a show if you wanted to hear ballads. It was back to back bangers including  “Coffin”, “Rebel Love Song”, the crowd-chanting “Wake Up” and their US radio hit “Scarlett Cross” which had the crowd fist pumping.

The synergy between guitarists Jake Pitts and Jinxx was evident with wicked solos, Iron Maiden-ish dual harmonies such as during  “All Your Hate” and “Knives and Pens”. Christian Coma on drums maintained the intensity and energy, highlighted in the double-kicking “The Legacy”, all while Lonny Eagleton solidly laying the rhythm backbone on bass. Frontman Andy Brierack’s demonstrated his singing versatility from holding melody to high intensity screaming.

Black Veil Brides finished the night with a deep cut “In the End” that left the crowd wanting more. They delivered tight, highly polished performance evidently forged by developing their craft over a number of years.

ABOUT ESSAOUIRA
Essaouira, first called Amogdul (“The well-kept” in Berber) then Mogador following the passage of the Portuguese and Spanish conquerors. The medina of Essaouira, the old traditional city, with its ramparts and its souks, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was also the setting for Game of Thrones and many films (Othello, Kingdom of Heaven). It is now a popular spot for surfers and kite surfers from all over the world who appreciate its relaxed lifestyle and its inherited hippie lifestyle. Indeed, the libertarian movement of the 1960s experienced a great boom in Morocco. These young travelers in search of enjoyment, coming from all over the world, have found in Essaouira a favorable place to live their libertarian dream. Among them Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens found refuge there.

Nick Carver & the Mean St Butchers Unleash Sophomore Album ‘ANIMALS’ Out July 1

by the partae July 1, 2022
written by the partae

Previous Support for Nick Carver & the Mean St Butchers

“It has a gorgeous dirty country blues feel to it, with big earthy guitars and rough-edged vocals. It’s foot-stomping, it’s a riot, yet comforting and personal.” (AU Review)

“The Way That You Walk is a smooth and moody piece that is rolling with bright keys, rolling brushed drums and Nick Carvers swoony vocal delivery.” (AAA Backstage)

“Searing soulful sludgy blues! That slide is getting a thrashing and sounds amazing. Love the brooding swamp this one’s rising up from. Unbeatable stompable rhythm.” [About ‘Two Legged Dog’] (Steph Hughes, Triple J)

“I’m glad I’m wearing boots while listening because I felt the intense need to stomp.”
[About ‘Two Legged Dog’] (Stacy Gougoulis, Triple J)

“Blow me down and let rip Nick! This is the kind of grit I can sunk my teeth into.”
[About ‘Two Legged Dog’] (Kath Devaney, Triple J)

Stream ‘ANIMALS’

Combining rough-edged rock and soulful blues with wallopping Americana folk roots, Nick Carver & the Mean Street Butchers are unleashing the beast with their eagerly anticipated sophomore album ‘ANIMALS’ – out July 1.

With outlandish singer-songwriter Nick Carver leading the charge, the Melbourne-based (Inverloch, VIC) rock/ roots outfit has been showcasing their class in the lead-up to this ultimate body of work, serving up singles ‘Two-Legged Dog’ and ‘The Way That You Walk’ earlier in the year.

Now, Nick Carver & the Mean Street Butchers are bringing it all together with an 8-track collection of artistically crafted tunes that reflect the band’s camaraderie, Nick’s home life and the long country drives where his inspiration is uninhibited, and his imagination is free to roam wild.

“The live vibe of four musicians smashing out live takes has always been at the heart of The Mean St Butchers,” Carver says.

“Lyrically, the album deals with the raising of my son, leaving my old city life, the beautiful ugliness of abandoned swamps, loss, love for music, love for my loved ones and a call to men to be decent fucking blokes.”

Opening with foot-stomping rock single ‘Two-Legged Dog’, there’s barely enough time to reach for the cowboy boots before heroic slide guitar solos and lightning strong riffs speak of the warmth of returning home.

Next, ‘Let Me Go’ emerges with a swinging rockabilly/ blues rhythm, washboard percussion and moody melodies, building up to an epic explosion of jamming instrumental prowess, representing a release of negativity and just letting it all go.

‘The Way That You Walk’ saunters in with dark keys, resonating drums and seductive bass, using ominous alt blues-folk with a psychedelic tinge to call out men who believe their words and actions have no consequence.

Then, ‘My Baby’s Eyes’ arrives as an ode to Nick’s son Teddy, using melancholic guitars and vulnerable vocals to convey the conflicting emotions of entering fatherhood, followed by ‘Slow Dance’, inspired by Nick’s love for The Stooges, delivering a raw, fuzz-fuelled blues-rock track that screams to be experienced live.

‘Pony’ saddles up on a steed of slow-burning blues, a pensive track about saying goodbye to a loved one, featuring intricate guitar techniques, before ‘Jimmy Wilson’ arrives as a serious bluesy ballad, acknowledging the unfairness of indigenous incarceration in our country.

Closing out the album is title track ‘Animals’, an epic six-minute alt-rock amalgamation of grunge and garage-rock elements, moving steadily with moody melodies before bursting apart with an instrumental epiphany in the form of an organ solo, uncovering the beauty one can find in a seemingly ugly and uncurated stretch of coastline.

The band’s previous releases have seen support from Triple J, Double J, Glide Mag, The AU Review, Countrytown, Beat, Scenestr, Amnplify, AAA Backstage and more, with the band also having performed at NYE on the Hill, Inverloch Sounds of Summer Festival and Folk Rhythm and Life Festival, as well as supporting artists like Ash Grunwald, Custard, The Fauves and The Tea Party.

Nick Carver & the Mean St Butcher’s sophomore album ‘ANIMALS’ is out on July 1 and they have a handful of shows upcoming. This includes a mini-festival in San Remo, AROCKALYPSE NOW, which they curated themselves to celebrate the launch of the album with friends Millar Jukes & the Muscle, Two Last Names and many more.

Black Veil Brides Australian Tour Kicks Off This Week!

by the partae June 30, 2022
written by the partae

Australia, BLACK VEIL BRIDES Australian tour kicks off this week! Tickets for their Australian headline tour are flying out the door. With Adelaide and Melbourne’s 18+ show sold out, the tickets for Melbourne’s all ages show are selling fast and final tickets remaining for Sydney and Brisbane.

BLACK VEIL BRIDES have championed the isolated, the dismissed, and the forgotten since the band’s early inception. That ethos and spirit persists in the fully realized incarnation of the band whose image is the object of devotion and obsession, and whose anthems are sung in unison by an international audience, a diverse legion who refuse to surrender.

In an era when rock music is regularly declared “dead,” BLACK VEIL BRIDES music videos have been viewed over a half a billion times. The band (and its members including vocalist, Andy Biersack, who was named as one of the 100 Greatest Living Rock Stars by Revolver) Instagram and Twitter accounts command close to 10 million followers between them.

BLACK VEIL BRIDES have an impressive stack of awards and accolades under their belt with multiple Kerrang! Awards, Revolver Golden Gods Awards and Alternative Press Music Awards. Vale, the group’s most recent full-length album, went to No. 1 on the US Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums chart.

The band’s tour history reads like a textbook of subcultural mile markers in the modern heavy music scene. An initial hardscrabble headlining outing in 2009 has been followed by multiple mainstage runs on the Vans Warped Tour; tours with Slash, Motley Crue, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine; the massive Resurrection Tour, co-headlined by new labelmates Asking Alexandria; multiple US festivals, including Rock on the Range and Aftershock; and several appearances at the UK’s acclaimed Download Festival.

With a rightful reverence for the pop cultural icons of the past, the young outfit has nevertheless fashioned their own collective future, with relentless fury. In the hearts and minds of their fans, Black Veil Brides represents an unwillingness to compromise and a resistance to critics (personal and professional), fueled by the same fire as the group’s own heroes, the iconoclasts whose creative output, once dismissed, is now canonized.

Tickets are on sale now from www.destroyalllines.com

JOHNNY HUNTER’s triumphant debut album ‘Want’

“a lush eruption of cinematic passion and heavy-hearted emotion” – Atwood Magazine

“blistering guitar riffs and howling vocals filled with raw, boundless energy” – Earmilk

“poised to cement their cult-classic status” – Life Without Andy

“They put the new in new wave on this striking debut” – NME Australia

“Johnny Hunter stand out from the pack” – Newcastle Herald

**** “Want is everything Johnny Hunter could have hoped to achieve” – The AU Review

“A mighty tune, expertly rendered and delivered with heart” – The Guardian

“so exciting and modern” – Vive Le Rock!

Kings of Sydney’s underground Johnny Hunter have today released their triumphant debut album Want via Cooking Vinyl Australia. Led by an emphatic music video for the title-track, Want comes ahead of the band embarking on a 9-date national album tour throughout July.

Buy the album HERE. Tickets are on sale HERE.

Rousing blood-pumper ‘Want‘ is a thunderous opening to the album, walloping with insurmountable force. From the outset, the title-track introduces Johnny Hunter as defiant and determined; frontman Nick Hutt shares “it’s a spearheaded promise to ourselves to be the best version we can be. With this song, our self-assured affirmation acts as a hardened fist to the whirlwind of challenges that life throws at us. ‘Want’ is Johnny Hunter incarnate.”

Despite the spirited nature of Johnny Hunter and their confident charisma, it’s the moments of furious honesty and deep catharsis where the strength of Want shines most brightly. Songs like ‘Cry Like A Man’ and ‘Clover’ hear Hutt bare his soul, with each soaring vocal adding another dimension to this six-piece who are destroying the boundaries of man-hood with their powerful vulnerability and proud embrace of self.

Hutt notes “As we were finishing the record, we had just gotten out of lockdown and were certain that we were staring down the barrel of another couple of months in isolation… so there’s an element of structured desperation across the ten tracks.” This raw humanity underscores the entire album; Johnny Hunter are self-aware enough to acknowledge that we are all human and need to embrace our whole selves on the journey to self-actualisation. ‘The Floor’ is an acceptance of our lowest points, while ‘Fracture’ finds the beauty in sadness. “No matter how different we may seem…unbeknownst to what it is we want… we have all been naive, we have all strived to find our version of life, we all fear change, fear sadness, all amidst our own collective fading eternity.” However they are equally fuelled by a grit and hunger that drives them to take on the world, its changes and its conflicts head on – expressed with absolute inviniciblity and naivety on ‘Endless Days’.

On bringing their cinematic soundscapes to life, Hutt adds “Being able to involve our producer Jack Moffitt (The Preatures) into the creative process ensured we could squeeze the best out of every song. Our relationship really drove the direction of the final production and helped to finesse the lyrics. We also teamed up with critically acclaimed producer Adam Greenspan (IDLES, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) to mix the album, and working with him opened our production so much more than we ever imagined.”

Since emerging from the shadows of Sydney’s grim nightlife in 2019, Johnny Hunter have quickly risen to cult favourites, selling out rooms across Australia’s East Coast and winning audiences over supporting the likes of Jack White and The Saboteurs, City Calm Down and Polish Club to name a few. Their debut EP Early Trauma (2020) garnered critical praise and airplay around the country, citing influences and drawing comparisons to The Smiths, Joy Division and The Cure. Though their sound is rooted in nostalgia, their impassioned songwriting and explosive live shows are undeniably made for now.
