‘FIRST & FOREVER’ – Live At Hanging Rock | One week to go! Set times + new artists announced

by the partae November 18, 2022
written by the partae

One week to go! Festival schedule out now

Just over a week to go and Victoria’s new day-long festival, First & Forever, is almost here! Get in quick – final tickets are on sale now at firstandforever.com.au. Curated by Briggs, First & Forever takes place at The Gathering Place, Hanging Rock on Sunday 27 November, and will see some of the country’s most celebrated contemporary First Nations artists converge for a brand new landmark event celebrating Blak excellence.

BAKER BOY ● BUDJERAH ● JESSICA MAUBOY ● KING STINGRAY ● SYCCO ● THELMA PLUM ● ALICE SKYE ● BUSBY MAROU ● CHRISTINE ANU ● DAN SULTAN ● ELECTRIC FIELDS ● EMMA DONOVAN ● MO’JU ● TASMAN KEITH ● ZIGGY RAMO ● BARKAA ● BIRDZ ● DAMEEEELA ● ERIC AVERY ● JESS HITCHCOCK ● JK-47 ● KALYANI ● KARDAJALA KIRRIDARRA ● KOBIE DEE ● DJAARA DANCERS ● DJIRRI WURRUNDJERI WOMEN’S DANCE GROUP ● TAUNGURUNG CHOIR

Now it’s time to start planning your day, with festival schedule and site map revealed. Artists will play short, uninterrupted sets and collaborate on the festival’s single, main stage – the ‘Uncle Archie’ stage. Gates open from 1pm, and with guest appearances and first-ever collaborations taking place throughout the afternoon and evening. Arrive early so you don’t miss out on any special musical surprises!

What’s more, Briggs is thrilled to announce three more artists added to the bill:

Mo’Ju (Wiradjuri) is chameleonic. They shapeshift between albums, often several times within the same release: jukebox-rattling, ‘50s rock n roller to swinging soul crooner; pop experimentalist to synthesised funk adventurer.

Using sound, movement and filmic techniques, Eric Avery (Ngiyampaa, Gumbangirr, Bandjalang and Yuin) takes a multi-disciplinary approach to pushing music and culture into new formations. Avery will perform throughout the day in support of several artists, as lead violin in the First & Forever house band.

With an ear keenly tuned to the low-end frequencies of club culture, Kalyani (Trawlwoolway) explores dance music from across the globe. She takes a confident and idiosyncratic approach to her sets, which can traverse bass-heavy genres including booty bass and trap; or transport audiences with gems of Turkish and Hindi pop rarely heard in clubs this side of the equator.

Special performances by the Djaara Dancers, Djirri Wurundjeri Women’s Dance Group and the Taungurung Choir will lead us into tributes to both Aunty Ruby Hunter and Uncle Archie Roach delivered by Dan Sultan, Paul Kelly, Emma Donovan, Jess Hitchcock and Kardajala Kirridarra.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

Whet your appetite on the day with a wide range of vendors, from local wineries to First Nations owned and operated foodies, such as Blak Brews and Cooee Café. Other vendors include Melbourne Paella Company, Taco Station, Dum and Dumplings, Route 66, Two Fat Indians, The Kaiser’s Sausage and many more. Being a picnic-style event, everyone can bring their own food, in a supermarket sized cooler bag.

As First & Forever is a licensed event, there is no BYO alcohol. All bars will have EFTPOS available for ease on the day.

WHAT TO BRING

Important: for information about what to bring, and what not to bring, please read the FAQS www.firstandforever.com.au/faqs. Bags will be checked upon entry.

TRANSPORT
To best avoid delays, we recommend taking a bus. For info and to pre-purchase your bus ticket, go to melbourneonthemove.com.au or phone 1300 55 86 86. Bookings are essential. A pick-up and drop-off zone for taxis and Ubers and private vehicles is between gates 7 and 8. For trains, check the V/Line train schedule to Woodend here.

We also recommend carpooling. Private vehicles with four or more passengers park at no charge. Arrive early to avoid delays. Parking will be available on the day – $20 cash or card/tap and go. Read the FAQs for all the transport details.

Artists from multiple nations will converge at The Gathering Place for what promises to be an extraordinary and historic live experience. We look forward to celebrating with you.

Secret Sounds and Live Nation present
YUNG GRAVY
AUSTRALIA X NEW ZEALAND MARVELOUS TOUR
Sydney & Melbourne sold out
Second and final Sydney show added!
Tickets on sale now at secretsounds.com

Yung Gravy has officially sold out the Sydney and Melbourne dates on his wildly anticipated Australian tour in February 2023 – less than a week after tickets going on sale. In response to this huge demand, Secret Sounds and Live Nation are thrilled to add a second and final Sydney show to the tour which will see the hip-hop phenomenon kick off his Australian performances at Enmore Theatre on Thursday 9 February. Tickets to the new date are on sale now via secretsounds.com!

Yung Gravy dropped Marvelous on 28 October via Republic Records. The album was accompanied by his new music video for single ‘Dancing In The Rain’ and ushers in Gravy’s biggest, boldest and best era yet – and we get to see it live!

Yung Gravy released the record’s lead single ‘Betty (Get Money)’ in June 2022, popping off as a generation bridging banger as it reignites the classic chorus (and iconic synths) of Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. Produced by Dillon Francis, Dwilly, and Popnick, the track has already gone Gold in the United States and Canada, in addition to generating over 200 million global streams.

‘Betty (Get Money)’ notably broke out as Yung Gravy’s first Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs Chart and leapt into the Top 30 of the Hot 100, ticking off another first for the rapper. Dominating airwaves both in the US and Australia, the single led to Yung Gravy making his late-night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a performance slot at MTV’s VMAs pre-show.

Alongside these massive releases, Yung Gravy has accelerated his meteoric rise this year with a co-headline tour of the states with Dillon Francis, an opening slot on Limp Bizkit’s arena tour and a series of RIAA certified platinum and gold bangers including: platinum ‘Mr. Clean’, platinum ‘1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot’,  gold ‘oops!!!’ gold ‘Magic’, gold ‘Whip A Tesla’ and ‘Welcome to Chilis’ with bbno$.

Yung Gravy is currently on a 29-city, co-headline tour of North America with bbno$ through December, before reaching Australian shores in February. Tickets are selling fast so jump on the gravy train and get them quick!

Melbourne’s free all-ages festival, ‘Illuminate the River’ reveals set times, announces flood fundraising initiatives

by the partae November 16, 2022
written by the partae

Illuminate the River, the free and all-ages music festival featuring Something for Kate, Baker Boy, Art vs. Science, Montaigne, Mia Wray, Teeny Tiny Stevies and many more lands this weekend, and ahead of the day, the festival has unveiled set times and a fundraising initiative for flood-affected residents.

Presented by City of Moonee Valley and On The Road Again and held on Saturday 19 November at The Boulevard in Aberfeldie from 12pm – 9pm, the day’s activities include three stages of live music, carnival rides, kids’ activities, a box wars workshop and more.

A full list of set times can be downloaded HERE or are located below.

Given the festival’s proximity to the flood zones on the Maribyrnong River, all water-based activities at the event, including the anticipated laser show and inflatable regatta, have been cancelled.

Instead, the festival is encouraging patrons to dig deep and support members of their community affected by the recent floods, and the organisations that help them.

Fundraising QR codes will be situated throughout the site on the day, which the public can scan to donate to GIVIT, the Essendon SES or both.

Volunteers in the Essendon SES Unit have been protecting Moonee Valley and surrounding communities since 1981. Most recently they coordinated the evacuation and rescue of residents when the Maribyrnong River flooded.

GIVIT has been helping those impacted by the recent floods directly. This organisation matches donors directly to those in need or uses 100% of donated funds to purchase items that are requested by those who need them.

Produced by the City of Moonee Valley and presented by On The Road Again, a Victorian Government initiative bringing live music back across the state, Illuminate the River 2022 will be held on Saturday 19 November from 12pm – 9pm in the Boulevard in Aberfeldie, and is a free, family-friendly and all-ages event.

Attendees are encouraged to walk, cycle or catch public transport to the event.

ALEXISONFIRE ADD SECOND MELBOURNE SHOW TO AUSTRALIAN 2023 HEADLINE TOUR

by the partae November 16, 2022
written by the partae

Canadian hardcore luminaries Alexisonfire have added a second Melbourne show on Saturday 25 February to their anticipated 2023 Australian visit.

Responding to demand during the pre-sale period, the five-piece will now deliver five headline shows down under, kicking off at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on Friday 17 February, followed by a stop at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on Monday 20 February, back-to-back nights at Melbourne’s Forum on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 February, winding up in Adelaide on Monday 27 February.

All shows will go on sale to the general public tomorrow at 10am local time.

Admired by Australian audiences, on their eighth visit down under Alexisonfire will perform songs from their celebrated catalogue, along with tunes from their new record Otherness – their first full-length album in thirteen years, never before heard live by local audiences.

The group that Rolling Stone declared “put Canadian post-hardcore on the map”, Alexisonfire have blown audiences away at major international festival appearances over Northern Hemisphere summer, including Lollapalooza across South America, Canada’s Born & Raised Festival and a “flawless” Rage Against The Machine North American support.

Alexisonfire will be joined on all dates by local rockers Luca Brasi, one of the country’s most roadworthy outfits.

Website | Facebook | Instagram

Studio 338 close out another spectacular season with their biggest quartet of festive events yet: It starts with the Sankeys £10 Xmas Rave on December 10th then an Abode Marathon on December 17th with a super line-up to come, then  it’s the Release New Years Eve 13-hour party with Matthias Tanzmann, Richy Ahmed, wAFF and Seb Zito and then the legendary Sankeys New Years Day Rave with Steve Lawler, Bontan and more,  Tickets for these always sell out so get yours now at https://ra.co/clubs/74592.

Studio 338 has been at the centre of London’s nocturnal landscape once again this year. Winter season started with the sold out immersive Release Halloween special ‘The Ritual’ with Ilario Alicante. Last Summer also saw a diverse array of events from a heartwarming Jamal Edwards SBTV cook up to in-house parties like HOME with Raresh, a grand Space Mini Summer Festival with Kings of Tomorrow, a special Release Summer Mini Festival with Tania Vulcano and Steve Lawler and plenty of other unforgettable nights with brands and labels like Toolroom, Hospitality Records and Space.

Headline shows in Wellington, Melbourne & Sydney!

Astral People, Handsome Tours, Future Classic, triple j and Laneway Presents are excited to announce the debut Australian & New Zealand headline shows from Fred again..

Taking place alongside his highly-anticipated performances at Laneway Festival 2023, Fred will stage intimate performances at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre, Melbourne’s Forum and Wellington’s Shed 6. Fans are urged to be quick to avoid disappointment – tickets to these exclusive shows are strictly-limited and will sell out.

Fred again.. may have needed introduction a year ago, but now his reputation precedes him. Whether you’re listening to his Actual Life trilogy, or his iconic Boiler Room set, everything Fred does is to the maximum.

Fred channels the ups and downs of life in ways seldom found in dance music. The Actual Life trilogy, his first solo albums, are musical diary entries – reflecting certain time periods in Fred’s life and full to the brim of sampled vocals from friends, collaborators and people met along the way. Carlos, for instance, is a construction worker Fred met after a show in Atlanta. His voice rings through the trilogy, a joyous Southern drawl proclaiming “I want you to see me, friend”, transformed across Actual Life into dance floor bangers that at times bring a tear to the eye. Each record is an expert exercise in composition, sampling and masterful production, spanning April 14 2020 to September 9 2022, contextualising what has undoubtedly been a difficult but enlightening period.

Don’t miss out on Fred again.. live in Australia and New Zealand this summer – there’s simply no telling what he’ll be up to next.

The Teskey Brothers Return With ‘This Will Be Our Year’

by the partae November 11, 2022
written by the partae
‘THIS WILL BE OUR YEAR’ IS A COVER OF THE ZOMBIES ORIGINAL
+ PERFORMANCE WITH ORCHESTRA VICTORIA NEXT WEEK (SYD)
+ ARIA NOMINATION FOR BEST BLUES & ROOTS FOR
LIVE AT HAMER HALL WITH ORCHESTRA VICTORIA
+ HEADLINE SHOW IN DEC AT THE PALACE FORESHORE (MELB)

The Teskey Brothers make their eagerly anticipated return with the release of their new single, ‘This Will Be Our Year’ – a cover of the classic song by The Zombies, and a timely sentiment as we approach 2023. On this version of the track, we hear the psychedelic-era pop sound of the original is supplanted by classic Teskey Brothers soul.

“We just played it in our way,” says Sam. “That’s the cool thing—sometimes when you try and cover something and you don’t spend too long trying to make it perfect, you just naturally fall into your own way of playing it and it naturally becomes your own thing.”

‘This Will Be Our Year’ sees the band collaborate with producer Eric J Dubowsky for the first time, whose CV includes records by Flume, Chet Faker and Weezer. The new music arrives ahead of the band’s performance with Orchestra Victoria next Fri 18th November at the Aware Super Theatre in Sydney, in celebration of their album Live At Hamer Hall, nominated for Best Blues and Roots Album at this year’s ARIA Awards. The band will then round out the year playing at Harvest Rock, Queenscliff Music Festival and a special headline show at the Palace Foreshore for Always Live on Sun Dec 4 in Melbourne.

The Teskey Brothers version of ‘This Will Be Our Year’ retains the harmonic and melodic integrity of the Zombies original, but in their hands, ‘This Will Be Our Year’ feels untethered to the past, newly animated by Josh’s distinctive vocal expression. The arrangement is unfussy, decorated with organs, horns and a hint of Muscle Shoals in the rhythm section. They haven’t given it a complete facelift, but the psychedelic-era pop sound of the original is supplanted by classic Teskey Brothers soul.

“’This Will Be Our Year’ is one of the most beautiful and interesting songs of all time, that everyone SHOULD know but not many people have really heard of… The question I keep asking is ‘how did they fit so many beautiful lyrics into that rhythm and melody?’ It shouldn’t work so well. But it does. I love this song and the sentiment to bring in the new year. ‘This Will Be Our Year’ by The Zombies, the Teskeyfied version. Happy festive season and bring on 2023!” – Josh Teskey

The Teskey Brothers are one of the great success stories in contemporary soul and roots music. Rooted in the partnership between vocalist Josh Teskey and his brother, guitarist and engineer Sam Teskey, the soul and R&B outfit from Warrandyte on the fringes of Melbourne have made their mark on the mainstream since releasing their debut album, Half Mile Harvest, in January 2017. The Teskey Brothers’ second album, 2019’s Run Home Slow, reached #2 in Australia and resonated with audiences across the globe, leading to major headline shows in London, Amsterdam and New York.  In the wake of its success, The Teskey Brothers landed slots at major festivals like Bonnaroo and Japan’s Fuji Rock, performed in front of ten-thousand people at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre and appeared on US network TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live!  Along the way, Sam Teskey earned a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album and The Teskey Brothers released a live album Live At The Forum, landing their first Australian #1 album.

Finally, December 3rd is an epic closing with Ukrainian duo and UPPERGROUND label bosses ARTBAT bringing their always emotive mix of house and techno, Grammy-nominated house pioneers CAMELPHAT laying down the grooves, innovative and moving techno songwriters Mathame, plus Jonas Saalbach and Miami-based Eran Hersh all playing.
