Today, the GRAMPIANS MUSIC FESTIVAL reveals its lineup for 2020. To kick off a brand new decade of festivities amongst the picturesque Grampians Mountain Ranges, the festival has served up some of Australia’s best names to ensure that 2020 is going to be unforgettable.
Leading the charge, one of Australia’s brightest exports and songwriters – JULIA JACKLIN. Having just made global headlines for her recent live duet with Lana Del Rey, Jacklin’s 2019 has gone from strength to strength as she’s continued to establish herself as a world class performer.
Joining Jacklin at the Grampians Music Festival this year, a variety of artists who are all killing it in their own lanes come together to shape what is looking to be easily the biggest year of the festival yet. ECCA VANDAL, THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES, DRMNGNOW and MADDY JANE – a small but fiery example of the representation of star talent on this year’ Grampians Festival lineup – are going to be unmissable.

For its fourth year, the Grampians Music Festival will be returning to its home of Halls Gap in Victoria on February 28th and 29th. Come March 1st, the GMF Emerging Artist Stages will be returning to pubs and taverns throughout town, providing local artists the opportunity to perform and showcase their talents for festival goers and local residents alike.
Tickets are available now, including camping and shuttle options for punters who want to enjoy the full Grampians experience. Packages include 2 Day and Single Day Festival passes, included in the variety of options on offer for those who want to kick on and camp out under the stars.
The Grampians Music Festival remains dedicated to championing local produce and boutique beverages, with stellar menu options to be unveiled soon. Partnering with the Halls Gap Caravan Park, the festival is offering punters a safe and close option to stay near to the action. Situated a mere three minute walk from the festival site, the Halls Gap Caravan Park is offering spots for $30 for two nights, which includes access to toilet and shower facilities and the camp kitchen.

St Kilda Festival is Australia’s largest community festival; a celebration of community spirit, live local music and the beautiful St Kilda foreshore.
Since the first St Kilda Festival in 1980, this well-loved annual summer celebration has established itself as an iconic event that brings hundreds of thousands of people together for one massive day of free fun!
Held on the second Sunday in February each year, the St Kilda Festival routinely attracts over 400,000 attendees. Glitoris have earned a reputation as one of Australia’s most fearlessly political, uncompromising and unforgettable live acts. After extensively played and widely received singles, ‘Trump Card’, ‘Spit Hood’ and ‘The Policy’, Glitoris were crowned ‘Queens of Australian Punk’ (The Brag) and the band have wasted no time in following up with their brutal, unapologetic hard rock anthem ‘Slut Power’ (out Friday 14th February): a raging call-to-arms dealing with the insidious nature of violence against women.
Straight off the back of winning the National Live Music Award (NLMA’s) for ‘Hard Rock Live Act of the Year’ (2019), 2020 sees Glitoris embark on their biggest national tour to date, starting in Alice Springs (6th March), a special International Women’s Day performance in Darwin (7th March) and finishing up in their home town of Canberra (23rd May). Bringing a brand new show to the stage, complete with a powerful new image and a rallying protest befitting our times, fans can expect the band to be at their rousing, political yet satirical best.

Melbourne Design Week, Australia’s leading annual international design event, today revealed the full program for its largest festival to date. Presented by Creative Victoria and the National Gallery of Victoria, the festival returns for its fourth consecutive year with more than 300 events across 11 days exploring the theme ‘How Can Design Shape Life?’
Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley, said: ‘From tackling e-waste to creating healthy cities and driving sustainability, design has the capacity to improve the way we live and address the challenges of our times. This year’s action-packed program extends across greater Melbourne, and to Geelong, celebrating design in all its facets and shining a light on the designers who are shaping our lives – now and in the future.’

Melbourne Design Week responds to a growing appetite for meaningful engagement with the design industry, providing a platform for designers and artists to express, question, propose and test ideas. The 2020 festival poses the question ‘How Can Design Shape Life?’ through five thematic pillars – Design Cultures, Waste, Healthy Cities, Waterfront, and Design Evolution.
DESIGN CULTURES
Life is shaped by contexts, beliefs, backgrounds and ideas that bring people together. How does design shape, and how is it shaped by, the multitude of cultures that exist in the world?
Francis Kéré: Architecture Shapes Life – Internationally acclaimed architect Francis Kéré delves into his journey and shares his vision for how architecture that is collaboratively realised, rooted in traditional knowledge and specific to its context will contribute to a positive and dynamic future for Africa. Presented by NGV with Architecture Foundation Australia and the Futuna Lecture Series.
Atmosphere: A Revival – A sauna installation that promotes the revival of bathing culture on the Birrarung (Yarra River). Presented by Studio Rain.
Take the Cake – This exhibition showcases the 100 iconic cake designs made famous by the Australian Women’s Weekly birthday cake book. Presented by NGV and Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.
Kultur-All Makaan – A three day pop-up mobile home of art and culture in Bendigo, celebrating diverse local communities. Named after a common northern European word for culture (kultur) and a Persian and African word for dwelling (Makaan) Kultur-All Makaan presents a cultural ideal of an arts institution. Presented by Punctum Inc. and Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Services.
WASTE
Melbourne Design Week continues its focus on the issue of waste by exploring how design can alleviate the problem of e-waste – phones, toys, electronics, lighting – or anything with a battery or a wire.
E-Waste Challenge Live Pitch Final, Victorian Design Challenge 2020 – Creative Victoria and NGV are offering $25,000 in prizes for the best design idea addressing the problem of e-waste. A challenge jury, chaired by Craig Reucassel from the ABC’s War on Waste, will review design solutions to tackle the 40 million tons of e-waste produced globally every year. Presented by NGV.
Bas van Abel: Dark Matter – The mobile phone is a symbol of instant connectivity, but it’s clear that we’ve lost any connection with the source of how it is made, who made it, where it comes from, and the social and environmental consequences of the production process. Fairphone aims to surface the dark matter of our production systems and make it human again. This keynote lecture by Fairphone founder Bas van Abel is a unique chance to think about the ways that design-led business can transform the environment and economy. Design is increasingly redressing the problems of urbanisation and proposing ways to improve health for humans, animals, plants and beyond. Melbourne Design Week examines the effects of increasing urbanisation and how we can foster healthy cities.
A Royal Commission into the State of Australian Cities – Part theatre, part panel discussion, this hypothetical Royal Commission delves into the most pressing issues facing the planning of our cities. Presented by Oculus.

COLLECTIBLE DESIGN
Many of Australia’s leading practitioners are experimenting with new materials, geometry, digital design, fabrication and concepts to shape contemporary design. Lighting, furniture, objects, fashion, architecture, textiles and contemporary jewellery will feature in exhibitions focusing on collectible design.
Designwork 04: Danielle Brustman – The fourth exhibition in an ongoing series dedicated to presenting the best contemporary Australian design. This solo exhibition of new works by Melbourne-based designer Danielle Brustman encompasses interior, furniture, lighting and object design. Presented by Sophie Gannon Gallery.
A&A: Exquisite Corpse/Cadavre Exquis – The debut exhibition from A&A, industrial designer Adam Goodrum and straw marquetry artisan Arthur Seigneur, presents three new and unique design pieces. Presented by Tolarno Galleries.
Life and Death – Urns made from soil, screens made from urine fed bacteria, chandeliers made from cracked phone screens and sending artworks into space – this exhibition presents projects by Australian creative practitioners exploring life and death. Presented by Friends and Associates.
Monolith – A furniture exhibition that reflects on how mass production in city buildings shapes our lives. Presented by James Howe.
Partu (Skin) by Johnny Nargoodah and Trent Jansen – A collaboration between remote cattle-station saddler Johnny Nargoodah and conceptual object designer Trent Jansen is an experiment in avant-garde furniture design working with animal skins. Presented by Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert and Arc One.
MELBOURNE ART BOOK FAIR
Returning for its sixth year from 13-15 March, with publishers, artists, designers and writers from around the globe converging on the NGV for a huge program. Pirate Radio will broadcast live from the NGV’s St Kilda Road Forecourt; Sticky Institute returns with the Australian Zine Showcase; NGV International hosts the debut of a children’s publishing workshop space run by Kids Own Publishing; and the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design, Moscow will present The New Normal: Design in the Age of Global Computation, a half-day symposium with international speakers including speculative architect and film director Liam Young and a debut Australian lecture by Amsterdam-based design/art collective Metahaven.
As part of the Melbourne Art Book Fair, the NGV will announce the winner of The Cornish Family Prize for Art and Design Publishing. An initiative of the NGV recognising outstanding publishing practice that explores art, design, architecture and contemporary culture, the prize will award $15,000 AUD to an overall winner with up to five finalists each receiving $1,000 AUD. The NGV gratefully acknowledges the Cornish family for their support of The Cornish Family Prize for Art and Design Publishing.

Last year saw the launch of a brand new venture between some of the international music scene’s leading minds in the form of Orbit DJ Retreats, which brought an immersive and holistic learning experience for DJ’s, producers and music industry enthusiasts to elevate their skills and knowledge to the next level.
After the huge success of its debut last year Orbit DJ Retreats return to the gorgeous setting of Fred’s Finca Ibiza, nestled in the centre of a stunning UNESCO protected national park near Salinas beach. This year Orbit DJ Retreats will present two five day experiences, with the first retreat running over the Ibiza openings period May 16th – 21st, and the second over Ibiza closings October 11th – 16th.
During the five day retreats, students will be mentored by a collection of the most successful and innovative names in electronic music and beyond whilst also having the opportunity to immerse themselves in wellness workshops. The programme will cover all the essentials to succeed in the music industry, including; using DJ equipment at the highest level of performance, mastering production and software skills, marketing, social media and branding, business and career development, plus workshops and classes focused on health, meditation and wellbeing.

CAMILLE HENROT: PLAY YOUR PART

Camille Henrot, the French-born, New York City-based contemporary artist, will be celebrated in an Australian-first survey of works that take a playful and inventive approach to addressing existential questions, in May 2020.
The exhibition will feature recent watercolours that explore aspects of human psychology, and the artist’s Interphones series of telephone sculptures that playfully draw attention to our relationship to authority and technology. In these interactive works, Henrot invites visitors to pick up a customised telephone and respond to prompts such as ‘Would you ever have sex at work? Is Google right about you? Are you gluten-free? Press control for yes. Enter for no.’
Featuring key works created by the artist over the past decade, Camille Henrot: Play Your Part will include the immersive room-scale installation The Pale Fox 2014, a companion piece to Henrot’s award-winning film Grosse Fatigue 2013, for which she won the Silver Lion at the 55th Venice Biennale. Grosse Fatigue attempted to tell the story of the universe whereas The Pale Fox is a meditation on our shared desire to understand the world intimately through the objects that surround us. Characterised by what Henrot has called a ‘cataloguing psychosis’, this vast installation features en masse more than 500 objects encompassing photographs, sculptures, books and drawings, including objects made by the artist as well as collected via eBay.

Ivan Durrant, a leading exponent of photorealism, and natural raconteur, will be celebrated in a major survey paying tribute to five decades of his extraordinarily diverse career since the 1970s, at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia from 1 May 2020.
Ivan Durrant: Barrier Draw is the most comprehensive survey of Durrant’s work to date. Featuring over 100 multi-disciplinary works from the Melbourne-born artist, the exhibition will also unveil a new larger-than-life sculpture inspired by his controversial back catalogue. Drawn extensively from Durrant’s personal collection, the exhibition also includes major works from public and private collections from across Australia.
‘A prolific artist and provocateur, Ivan Durrant has created one of the most audacious bodies of work in Australian art,’ said Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV. ‘With his work first exhibited at the NGV in 1979, we’re delighted to welcome Ivan back to pay tribute to his extensive career and provide a platform to unveil an unmissable new work.’
The exhibition chronicles the evolution of Durrant’s diverse career, including his earliest folk paintings depicting an idyllic childhood in the countryside, which were a sharp contrast to his own experiences having grown up in an orphanage; his realist paintings, short films and sculptures of the 1970s and 80s, including his race track and movie star series; politically motivated installation works including Butcher Shop 1977/78, held in the NGV Collection; and more recent evocative ‘soft-focus’ paintings of the 1990s and 2000s.

Contemporary artist Olaf Breuning presents a large-scale participatory exhibition for children that plays to young people’s universal love of adventure and theme parks while referencing Breuning’s thoughts about life. Drawing from popular culture and inspired by the artist’s love of video games and movies from his youth such as Jurassic Park, the exhibition is an adventure of self-discovery.

Tackling global issues including climate, tolerance and social change, today’s children and young people are arguably the leading activists of our time, urging the world to think about how our actions are influencing our future.
We Change the World takes the positive influence of this generation on shaping our worldview and, through the work of contemporary artists and designers, explores how creativity and expression is important at personal, community and global levels.
The exhibition encourages all visitors, and especially school students and young people, to engage with the work of prominent Australian and international artists from the NGV Collection who focus on some of the big issues of today as well as celebrating everyday life.
We Change the World highlights the contribution of creative minds and challenges us to consider our own potential for change, empowering young people, but also those of all ages, with the permission to be creative, speak up or speak differently.
