Retrofile Interview

by the partae June 13, 2023
written by the partae

1. Where are you currently based?

A) We are currently based out of Edmonton, Canada.

2. What’s been happening recently?

A) We recently traveled to Toronto for our first showcase set at Canada Music Week/

3. Your latest single ‘In Stereo’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

A) “In Stereo” is our attempt at splitting the difference between our New Wave and Pop Rock influences. Luke and I had been looking to write a song that incorporated dance elements with anthemic elements, while acting as a cornerstone in terms of sound to the rest of the music we’ve been recording. The verses pull influence from Dance-Rock icons like Talking Heads, Franz Ferdinand, and LCD Soundsystem; while the chorus leans towards arena Pop-Rock acts like The Killers, Tears for Fears, and The Cars.

4. How did you go about writing “In Stereo”?

A) Some songs come together really easily. From writing, to recording, to mixing, you can have them finished within a week or so. “In Stereo” was not one of those songs. I think it’s because of the dynamics of the arrangement. The verses stay quite small, groovy, dancey; and then the chorus lifts up into something anthemic. Getting that to work from a production standpoint was a hell of a time. I think the work was well worth it though, when I hear “In Stereo ” coming out of the speakers I feel it’s doing something truly unique.

5. Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with? A) “In Stereo” was recorded and produced in our home studio just like all of our other releases. Mastering was handled by our good friend Bryan Lowe over at Joao Carvalho in Toronto.

6. You’re performing at the Canadian Music Week at Bar Cathedral in Toronto on Saturday, June 10th, how did this show come about?

A) You know, the usual; You send an email, and then they send an email, and then you send an email, and then you’re in Toronto playing Canadian Music Week!

7. What can we expect from your performance?

A) A high energy, danceable sort of a show! We’re going to be debuting our new single “Broke Generation” which hits streaming the day

before. We’ve really enjoyed running through that track in practices so I’m looking forward to hitting the stage.

8. Who are you listening to at the moment?

A) Lately, Ghost (Impera), The Killers (Hot Fuss), Talking Heads (Remain in Light) and Alvvays (Blue Rev)

9. What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?

A) Lot’s to look forward to! We will be releasing a single every month leading up to our new EP coming out this fall. We have our “Retrofile Volume 1” vinyl shipping off in July, which is nearly sold out in Pre-Order. Also, we are heading off to the U.K. to play a handful of shows in September!

10. Favourite food and place to hangout?

A) We love grabbing breakfast at Route 99, just off of Whyte Avenue here in Edmonton. Good Diner food and the prices haven’t changed since ‘05.

Sam Mcgovern/ Ones To Watch x The Partae

by the partae June 13, 2023
written by the partae

What’s been happening recently?

I think I could write you a novel here, it’s been the most exciting & busiest time of my life.   Last month I bought a van, packed my whole life up & drove over the country from Perth to Sydney. It was a very grounding experience, complete solitude with the road & vast nothingness of the Nullarbor.

Some of my biggest ups & downs lately. Moving has not been easy & especially during a time where I had internet vitality skyrocketing my socials. Only a few months ago I was entirely independent, no management, agent, nothing. Having to independently deal with the viral craziness of my campaign promoting my single “Memory” was a lot more than most. I’ve been settling into city life here in Sydney –

I’ve made a lot of sacrifices to move here, but I’m here for opportunity, so much is going on here & I want to be apart of it. It’s time to create some noise on this side of Australia.

How did you come to be involved with One’s To Watch?

Through my absolute legend of a booking agent Jimmy! He’s from Select Music, we got in touch after my single “Memory” started making some noise from the vitality of my socials. Love the guy, we are still yet to get a skate in together!

What are your thoughts on your experience so far?

I’m very excited to be involved, I’ve obviously heard a lot about live nation & have been told some of the names who have appeared on Ones to Watch prior – I’m keen to join the ranks!

You’ll be performing on the 22nd of June, 2023, can you give us a little taste of what we can expect

Don’t expect what you were expecting with me… A LOT has changed with my sonics recently, I’ve been drawing more and more influence from a larger & more diverse sound. Artists such as John Mayer, Leon Bridges, Lewis Capaldi, Taylor Swift & Olivia Dean to name a few. It feels like a strange spot to be in currently, my fans & the public associate my music with a “folky” sound, well…. I’ve been banking up a new record which is a more diverse & widely appreciated vibe. I am ITCHING to get it out to the world & show everyone I mean business. In terms of on a live scale – me & one of my best mates Ben Morgan have recently been taking advantage of busking together often in Sydney. He’s an artist himself and has been accompanying my songs with extra guitar and saxophone. It’s really lifted the vibe for the live side of things, especially having the sax. This will be our first time appearing together live on a proper stage.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Usually I listen to John Mayer 24/7 but lately – I’ve really been digging the unexpected; Kanye’s The Collage Dropout, Mac Miller Circles, A LOT of Taylor Swift – which is the exact opposite side of her history with John Mayer, also the likes of Loyle Carner, Olivia Dean & the absolute gem that is Leif Vollebekk.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?

I’ve got huge goals & ambitions for my career, in saying so that means never ending hard work, so the rest of this year will involve a constant hustle! As I said, I’ve been working on a new record, a 5-6 track EP which I am extremely proud of. I have all confidence that we’ve got a hit or two on the record.I am bit of a perfectionist, so will prepare everything before I can even think of releasing the next single from the record.

I have all faith in this new music can’t wait to bring my A game with my smart marketing to make my music reach millions.I hope to release this record by the end of the year, in saying so; I’m on the lookout for the major labels now, I know that the combination of their large scale amplification & my ability to create smart music marketing will be a fool proof plan to get the record out into the world & go large!

Other than the EP; I plan to do some co writing over here in Sydney, aim to support some large acts, jump on a few festivals & keep improving, learning & growing.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Although “I’ve been around Australia a couple times or maybe more” no place feels more like home than Western Australia. I was recently back home a few weeks ago to finish recording my EP, so visited all the best food spots; Daises Cottesloe, the best açai bowls ever, Peggy’s in Fremantle, a chicken snitty sandwich to die for, & Ruocco’s Fremantle, the best Italian in town. I find my home state hard to beat, I feel very grateful & privileged to have grown up in WA.

Everything is blissfully comfortable, more friendly people & so many insanely beautiful places that are just so quiet & peaceful. Margaret River will always feel like home to me, I lived there for a part of my life & will always dream of it. But really – anywhere where the spirits are high and my best friends are with me is always the best spot to hang out!

Eliza Hull Interview

by the partae June 13, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I live on Dja Dja Wurrung Country in Castlemaine.

How did you first start playing music?

I started singing when I was five years old, but didn’t start writing songs ’till I was fifteen, when I was given a piano from a family friend who passed away. Writing songs was a way for me to express what I was feeling.

You’ve just got back from touring the UK, please tell us about the experience:

I toured with artist Ruth Lyon, who is an incredible performer and songwriter. We performed for the month of May across the UK, as well at The Great Escape Festival; I also did a show in London at the Aussie BBQ showcase, thanks to Sounds Australia. It was absolutely incredible performing alongside Ruth each night on tour, my favourite part was meeting the audiences at the end of the night and getting to connect with people as well as hearing Ruth sing!

Your latest single ‘Running Underwater’ is out now, how did this single come about?

I wrote ‘Running Underwater’ several years ago just on my piano. It was one of those songs that just pours out of you quickly. It’s about having a disability and being told that you should hide it to fit in. For a long time I thought I needed to hide it and the weight was really heavy. It felt like I was ‘Running Underwater’. I performed the song on ABC’s Q&A and so many people reached out saying they related to the song. When I started my new EP with producer Pip Norman, I knew it was one I needed to record. I’m really proud with how it turned out. It’s very anthemic.

Please tell us about the importance of this single and its significance for you when it comes to your advocacy work, being a champion for other musicians with disabilities: Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

I feel ‘Running Underwater’ is important because disability is still greatly underrepresented in the music industry! That’s not because there isn’t talent out there, it’s because there are so many barriers. For instance it’s hard for musicians to tour and release music when they can’t get through the door! I hope that having a disability showcased like this, especially with the music video, that it can represent disability as something that shouldn’t be feared, or a deficit. In fact it’s something
to be celebrated.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Odette, Ngaiire, Jen Cloher, Moreton.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?

I have a show at Melbourne Recital Centre in August as well as some shows in Sydney and Brisbane. Some other exciting things are underway as well. I will be releasing my EP later this year also.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I love strawberries & watermelon! In winter, soups are my go to! I love hanging out at The Bridge Hotel in Castlemaine or my local cafe Saint Florian.

Off Judy Find The Sweet Spot Between An Indie Rock Bop And A Punk-Laden Belter With ‘Under The Weather’ (Out Now)

by the partae June 10, 2023
written by the partae
With their nonchalant and carefree attitude, this raucous Byron Bay-based garage surf rock trio, Off Judy, are releasing their latest single, ‘Under The Weather’ with its accompanying music video on Friday, June 9.

Formed as a duo, Off Judy consists of singer and guitarist Finn Mcildowie and drummer Thomas Cameron-Duncan. Recently, they welcomed the addition of drummer Axl Delandro and Thomas Cameron-Duncan’s transition to bass, solidifying their powerful lineup and expanding their sonic possibilities.

‘Under The Weather’ is the exhilarating new track that showcases Off Judy’s fusion of sun-kissed punk and invigorating surf shack anthems. The song effortlessly combines infectious melodies with euphoric energy, creating a proverbial earworm. ‘Under The Weather’ has their punk roots shining through with a raw rock foundation that bursts with chant-worthy chorus. Masterfully, they have found a sweet spot between a palatable indie rock bop and a punk-laden belter.

Regarding the inspiration behind ‘Under The Weather’, Finn Mcildowie shares:

“We’ve all found ourselves in dark places. Whether it’s a momentary bad headspace or it feels more like an endurance race with no finish line. This song came to life while I was stuck in a quarantine hotel in Hamilton, New Zealand, which undoubtedly influenced its raw emotions. However, the message is pretty clear—Be there for your mates, let them know they’re not alone. Lean on each other through the shit times and come out better on the other side.”

Capturing that pure indie-rock goodness, the band had the privilege of working with producer Brock Weston (BUGS) – a name that has become synonymous with the genre. Weston’s guidance and production expertise brought out the best in ‘Under The Weather’, resulting in a track that encapsulates Off Judy’s energetic spirit.

The accompanying music video, filmed and edited by Curtis Cloake, is a mixed-bag of emotions. Through their characteristic happy-go-lucky approach, the clip takes viewers on a comical journey, showcasing a protagonist who finds himself at rock bottom. Struggling with a series of misfortunes –including a humilating time at the rollerskating rink– he is ignited with a spark of courage and returns to the rink for a spirited, feel-good ending.

In addition to the release of ‘Under The Weather’, Off Judy has exciting live shows on the horizon. They will be performing at the Byron Music Fest Launch Party on June 16th, and fans across the pond can look forward to their upcoming New Zealand tour in October, which will see them performing in Wellington, Gisborne, The Mount, and Auckland.

Off Judy’s
unique blend of slacker-punk, larrikin wit, and zany stage presence has garnered them a reputation for delivering electrifying performances, which has had them invited to support the likes of Daily J, SKEGSS, Pandamic and more. Their explosive energy and witty ratbaggery make each live show experience a memorable and raucous affair.

Chant along with Off Judy’s surf punk anthem on Friday, June 9 and stay connected with the band for more upcoming show dates, releases, and all the latest news.

prchr. Releases A Bombardment Of Rock With Dual Single ‘GHOST / CHICAGO’ (Out Now)

by the partae June 10, 2023
written by the partae
Previous support for prchr.

“prchr. (pronounced ‘percher’) is on a quest to bring his ‘new era’ rock vision to the masses with fuzzy guitar tones and hectic distortion sounds that morph between alternative, garage rock and grunge.”  (Scenestr) [About ‘ONLY CHILD’]
“ONLY CHILD erupts oozing with the hard-hitting swagger of Royal Blood, the raw charm of DZ Deathrays, and a holistic adoration for all things rock’n’roll.”
(Hysteria) [About ‘Only Child’]

Serving up a bombardment of unflinching rock, prchr. (pronounced percher), is breaking the levy with his dual single ‘GHOST / CHICAGO’, out Friday, June 9. prchr. is channelling raw energy with his blend of genres through alternative, garage and hard rock, hailing in a new era that resonates deeply with young, like-minded rock enthusiasts.

Since releasing his debut EP ‘ONLY CHILD’ at the beginning of 2023, prchr.’s journey has seen him share the stage with notable acts like The Smith Street Band and Press Club on their recent tour. With airplay on BBC Radio 1 and numerous radio outlets across Australia and the USA, as well as recognition from esteemed publications like Scenestr and Hysteria Mag, prchr. continues to garner widespread support for his distinctive sound.

Now, unleashing his latest double A/B-sided singles, ‘GHOST’ and ‘CHICAGO’, both tracks serve as anthems of escapism, exploring themes of disappointment in loved ones, isolation, and introspection, all while being layered with walls of fuzz and infectious hooks.

The focus track, ‘GHOST’, encapsulates prchr.’s darker songwriting with a big wall of rock approach. With its brooding atmosphere, fuzzy textures, and introspective lyrics, ‘GHOST’ delves into the emotions of isolation from loved ones, self-doubt, accepting oneself, and relinquishing hope for a brighter future.

On the flip side, ‘CHICAGO’ builds upon the foundations of blues rock, infusing it with a modern garage flair. The track revolves around the theme of escapism and the dangers of wasting time on the wrong people. With its pulsating instrumentation and infectious energy, ‘CHICAGO’ exemplifies prchr.’s knack for crafting powerful rock soundscapes.

To coincide with the release of ‘GHOST / CHICAGO’, prchr. unveils a visually mesmerizing music video set in a gritty warehouse carpark. The video showcases prchr. tormented in the raw industrial backdrop as the lyrics are projected onto the surroundings creating an enrapturing lighting effect to become fully immersed in.

prchr.’s
massive barrage of rock in ‘GHOST / CHICAGO’ is out everywhere on Friday, June 9.

Heterochromia release sassy new pop rock single ‘Plastic’

by the partae June 10, 2023
written by the partae

Sydney indie-pop soloist Heterochromia shares dancey new single, Plastic, before heading on the Cracked Porcelain Tour, visiting towns across the nation.

Exploring the throes of self-worth, Plastic boasts a mellow balance of energetic rock and bubblegum pop genres, engaging listeners with sing-along melodies, bouncing riffs and an upbeat rhythm section that delivers an important message packaged in candied sarcasm.

“Plastic laments a time in my life where I was feeling very ornamental and used by various characters in my life, which served as a catalyst for the toy motif we’ve been playing with so far,” says vocalist Bree Vane. “Plastic has a very cathartic ‘f*ck you I’m a whole person’ chorus that makes it a lot more positive, and it’s definitely the most upbeat song we’ve written. I’m really excited for people to dance to this one”

Produced by Joshua Gonzalez, and mixed and mastered by Christopher Vernon (Belle Haven, Future Static, Better Half), Plastic builds with each passage to create a lush sonic tapestry teeming with Vane’s signature sugar-coated pop energy.

The track forefronts Vane’s exemplary songwriting and commanding yet vulnerable vocals in a high-end production package that makes for a truly evocative performance.

Heterochromia will be taking their live performances across the East Coast on the Cracked Porcelain Tour visiting Canberra, Melbourne, Newcastle, Brisbane and Sydney. Heterochromia will headline Hamilton Hotel in Newcastle on August 6 and Oxford Art Gallery in Sydney on September 9. Surrounding dates will see Heterochromia support up and coming acts local to each show. More information below!

No stranger to the music industry, Vane is renowned for her contribution to the Australian music community as a photographer and graphic designer. Most notably, Vane spearheaded Wall Of Sound’s evolution into digi-mag territory, where she has successfully curated both the Good Things Festival Special and the soon to be released Knotfest Special digi-mags. A woman of many creative endeavours, Vane is also the brains behind the machine that is Heterochromia.

Heterochromia’s debut 2022 single Baby Doll, a tale of forbidden love, put the name on the map and saw Vane debut her live show with a band at Sydney’s packed out Burdekin Hotel last November. Earlier this year Vane collaborated with alt rock favourite David De La Hoz of Belle Haven on sophomore single Kicking, demonstrating a great emotional range and commendable musicianship.

Plastic is the third single by Heterochromia before a larger release will make its way into the world later in the year. Plastic is available now, streaming on all platforms.

The first release of the series comes from the most suitable artist for the job – the Dutch/Moroccan R3HAB and his rendition of one of Lebanese artist Myriam Fares‘ biggest hits – “Goumi,” which just surpassed 10 billion views across short-form video platforms (namely TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube shorts). The result is a fresh, edgy fusion of Arab mainstream pop and dance-electronic sound, rich with Arabic culture and ready for the dance floors far and wide. R3HAB‘s remix of “Goumi” opens with the singer’s passionate vocals and incorporates mystical-sounding instrumentals to conjure images of Arabian nights, while R3HAB adds his signature growling, rolling bassline, and driving melodies to give the original version its club- and festival-oriented makeover. Since this is the first release of many on a similar note, upcoming pop artists from the Middle East and North Africa, which are to be treated by a remix from some of the world’s most established DJs/producers, include the likes of Mohamed Hamaki, Ahmed Saad and Amr Diab while Steve Aoki, Salvatore Ganacci and AFROJACK, to name only a few, are already confirmed to deliver their remixes in the near future.

“We, at MDLBEAST, pride ourselves on being disruptors within the MENA music industry. As the leading player in the region, we are constantly pushing boundaries and pioneering new projects to elevate the music of our region onto the global stage. Our latest endeavor holds a significant place in our hearts, as it marks the beginning of a remarkable series of exquisite remixes that we are eagerly anticipating the world to hear. Through this project, we aim to give the region’s music the recognition and reach it truly deserves. Stay tuned, as MDLBEAST records continues to revolutionize the music landscape.” – Edwin Harb, Senior Label Manager, MDLBEAST Records

“I’m happy to be part of this project, after the immense success of ‘Goumi,’ I was really happy to perform it with R3HAB‘s touch on SOUNDSTORM‘s mainstage and now release it with MDLBEAST Records.” – Myriam Fares

“Myriam and I had the pleasure of teasing this remix live at MDLBEAST‘s Soundstorm 2022 last December in front of 100,000 people, and the response was electric. I love working across cultures since it’s always a good challenge to maintain the original sound while adding my dance touch to the record. We’re excited to finally share it with the world!” – R3HAB

Myriam Fares

Myriam Fares is an Arab International super star. Singer, performer, and actress Myriam Fares is one of the most renowned artists in the Arab region. With an inspiring history of 20 years in music, she became the first Arab artist to achieve a wide crossover globally with hits like “Goumi,” “Tukoh Taka” with Nicki Minaj and Maluma, and “Ghmorni” reaching different cultures from all around the world beyond the barriers of language. With a discography of more than 12 albums/singles, Myriam injects an upbeat vibe and ongoing originality in all her songs which make them catchy even among non-Arabic speaking audiences. Myriam‘s dance challenge for her song “Goumi” spread all over the globe surpassing 10 billion views to this day, making it the most viral challenge on TikTok. It propelled Myriam‘s name to the world as people from all around the world took part in this fun and unique challenge. In 2022 FIFA chose Myriam to represent the Arab world at the FIFA World Cup in the official FIFA Fan Festival Anthem – “Tukoh Taka,” with artists Nicki Minaj and Maluma. The song instantly topped the U.S. iTunes chart and charts all over the MENA region and the world. On the other hand, Netflix chose Myriam to be the first and only artist/public figure in the Arab region to broadcast a documentary. The documentary “Myriam Fares: The Journey” released in 2021, was immediately top-ranked and remained among the top searches for months. Myriam is also a professional actress. To name a few of her lead acting roles, she is the protagonist in the pan-Arab top-rated series “Itiham,” a loved series that has been successfully rerunning for the past nine years, and movies like “Silina,” an adaptation of the Rahbani brothers’ “Hala and The King.”

R3HAB

Multi-Platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the past fifteen years. From his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, Sia, Jason Derulo, Ed Sheeran, Tyga, Ellie Goulding, The Chainsmokers, P!nk, to name only a few, to anthems such as multi-Platinum-certified “All Around The World (La La La),” “Lullaby” with Mike Williams, “Flames” with ZAYN and Jungleboi, or “Creep” with Gattüso, to his collaborations with the likes of Ava Max, Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul, Afrojack, Armin van Buuren, Lukas Graham, Icona Pop, and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most forward-thinking artists in the game. His work has collected over 9 billion streams to date, including 1.1 billion in 2022 alone. He founded his label CYB3RPVNK in 2016, which has passed 4B streams across platforms since its inception. He is Spotify’s Most Discovered Artist, one of Spotify’s top 300 most streamed artists, ranked #13 on the prestigious DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs chart, and has earned over 70 Gold and Platinum certificates. On top of that, he performed at the world’s top festivals, such as EDC, Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Balaton Sound, Coachella, Summer Sonic Festival, DWP Jakarta, and more. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, R3HAB has earned his place as a household name in dance music.

JACK BRATT delivers sublime new single ‘HAND ON HEART’

by the partae June 7, 2023
written by the partae

When songwriter and musician Jack Bratt released his debut album Slow Release in 2022, the record was met with acclaim and renewed appreciation for Bratt’s skills as a wordsmith and musician.

A record that took time to create, execute and deliver, Slow Release proved to be well worth the wait for fans and for Bratt alike; his artistry had been evolving and deepening in its quality for two decades – the release of such a record proved a fitting career touchstone.

Bratt’s return in 2023 then, was always going to be quite the anticipated one. The first new music we’re hearing from him arrives in the form of ‘Hand On Heart’ – a stunning track that heralds the re-emergence of an Australian songwriting gem.

Written during time spent living in Brooklyn, New York, where he had relocated to undertake the Grant McLennan Fellowship. During this time of creative development, Bratt’s personal life also underwent some big changes.

Against the backdrop of the pandemic, Bratt’s long-term relationship of seven years came to an end, leaving him on the other side of the world, figuring out what was coming next. Navigating this phase during such an uncertain time gave inspiration for the foundation of ‘Hand On Heart’ and from there, the music came to life.

“I’d spent a year in a bit of a holding pattern trying to work out where my life was headed after such a huge change in trajectory. I thought the rest of my life was planned out and then it completely changed overnight.

The lyrical content of the song is referencing a lot of doubt about whether or not I would be able to repair correctly after that relationship, and if I was ever going to allow myself to be vulnerable enough to put myself in the position again. I’d had several short-lived relationships afterwards and just found myself feeling a bit broken and unable to give the emotional depth to those relationships that I wanted to.”
JACK BRATT

Recording took place in Brisbane at Hunting Ground Studios, with Bratt working alongside Joel Myles (Head Atlas), who produced the Slow Release record. Reconnecting with Joel soon after his return to Australia, Bratt found himself back in a rhythm of creativity that was comfortable and from there, things clicked back into place.

“The recording of the track was an extremely enjoyable process. I went back into the studio with my producer/collaborator as soon as I returned to Australia after living abroad for a year, and we went straight back to work like a day hadn’t passed. Joel and I have a truly amazing working relationship where it feels very effortless, our ideas are very much in sync.

“It’s new musical territory for me, but I always plan on expanding my sound and I hope to always find it hard for people to think what genre I fit into.”
JACK BRATT

Bratt’s relationship with music has been one growing with reverence since he was a teenager. Playing across numerous projects over the years, he has performed alongside the likes of Wolfmother, Tame Impala and more; though in his solo work, Bratt has truly engaged in a special phase of his songwriting journey.

Slow Release debuted at #6 on the AIR Album Charts, as well as earning support across community radio and the national broadcaster; three singles receiving Triple J and Double J support, as well as adds to Coles Radio and more.

Bratt’s win of the lucrative and respected Grant McLennan Fellowship in 2019 was a demonstration of faith the industry had in Bratt’s continued potential as a musician; potential that has thrived in recent years, kicking off again here with the release of ‘Hand On Heart’.

PRAISE FOR JACK BRATT

“It’s not just a record that’s written well, it’s also a true masterclass in composition. With Bratt taking on most instruments himself …it’s a warm and inviting record that feels custom-made to appeal to the true music appreciator.”
Rolling Stone Australia (Slow Release, 2022)

“Consistent songwriting, cleverly arranged, and delicately mixed — as expected from JB.”
Triple J, Max Quinn (‘Coming Of Age’, 2022)

“Songwriting that throws back to the golden age of Australia radio rock. You’ve got a voice with plenty of character and a chorus that might stick in the dome!”
Triple J Unearthed, Tommy Faith (‘Coming Of Age’, 2022)

“Drawing from the same deck as The War on Drugs or Kingswood, there’s textural, atmospheric walls of sound punctuated by potent guitar lines, a propulsive rhythm section and Bratt’s own driving vocals…”
Music Feeds (‘Spades’, 2020)

“For many years now, Brisbane’s Jack Bratt has been an unsung hero of the Australian music scene…”

Canadian Rock Band, Texas King Release New EP Capsize On July 7th

by the partae June 7, 2023
written by the partae

Toronto, ON – Today, Canadian rock band Texas King is excited to announce their highly-anticipated new EP Capsize, set to be released on July 7th via Known Accomplice / Cadence Music Group and via all streaming platforms.

Capsize will be the band’s biggest and boldest record yet, and is a story of reckoning, redemption, nostalgia, and hope that sees Texas King’s Jordan Macdonald (Vocals & Guitar), Melvin Murray (Bass), and Phil Spina (Drums) following up from where their 2021 EP, Changes, left off.

The five-track EP will include Texas King’s current radio single “Whatever You Break,” a driving power ballad, which recently broke into the #5 on the Active Rock charts and is the band’s highest charting single to date. The song was produced by Brian Moncarz, along with the EP’s title track “Capsize” and “Rely On Me”.

“This is a follow up to our Changes EP and it speaks to the real life nature of things sometimes needing to get worse before they get better. The metaphor is that you’re in a boat and seemingly smooth sailing when all of a sudden you re enter rough waters and you find out that your boat wasn’t as solid as you thought. It flips over. A total capsize. There’s something to be said about hitting rock bottom. There are some “phoenix rising from the ashes” type vibes on this one that we hope fans enjoy,” said Jordan MacDonald, lead vocalist of Texas King.

In-your-face singalongs and heartfelt power ballads that reflect the heat, the urgency, and the desperation of a moment, are also showcased on the EP in the tracks, “Home” and “Memory,” produced by Peter van Helvoort and Matt Snell.

Texas King have put 250,000 miles into their van over the past decade – touring all over North America alongside acts like Big Wreck, Last Dinosaurs, and The Glorious Sons. Since 2013, they’ve been cutting their teeth on the road and in the studio, releasing music that captures the show-stopping passion they’ve brought to stages that include Vancouver’s Ambleside Festival, Ontario’s ParkJam and Hillside Festivals, and Québec’s Festival D’été.

Most recently, the band performed their high energy live show for 20 markets across Canada on their national tour, after announcing that they inked a deal with Known Accomplice, the go-to indie label serving rock and related genres in Canada. Texas King also has an upcoming show in Bala, ON on August 19th opening for The Trews.

Drift Interview

by the partae June 6, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Wombarra

What’s the Wollongong music scene like at the moment?

The wollongong music scene at the moment is forever evolving with a tight community, some of our best friends and favourite bands to see

What’s been happening recently?

Drift released our new song “Begin”, we played our launch show this weekend which was sold out, we’re writing new material and we’re looking forward to announcing more cool stuff soon!

Your latest single “Begin” is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The biggest influence for “Begin” that was the sound I was looking for when writing the song was listening to 90s/00s emo bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, MCR.

How did you go about writing “Begin”?

The main influence when writing the song came from a bunch of small events in my life that basically combined into one big idea of “moving on” and trying to be resilient and the importance of acknowledging when it’s appropriate to move on. I just got out of a relationship so I guess this song still applies to my life at the moment too with themes of “trying to let go” and “moving in without that person in your life”

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

We recorded “Begin” with Chris Peruch at the top of a local Wollongong record store Music Farmers. This was a match made in heaven as Chris loves the music that we are into and was super on board recreating and reimagining the shoegaze sound

What or who influenced the concept for the music video?

An online AI generator! We were looking for cool ideas and somehow “fairy and devil playing a game of chess” came up

Where and when did you film and who did you work with?

We filmed the music video in a shared creative workspace in Bellambi with our good friends Josh Fogarty and Liam Jordan .

Any upcoming shows?

We have an upcoming show with dust in Sydney on Friday at OAF, we also have some super special unannounced shows coming up soon too

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m currently really into Narrowhead’s new album ‘Moments Of Clarity’ , Sunami and Linkin Park’s ‘Hybrid theory’

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?

We plan to play heaps more shows and put out more music!!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

That would have to be Mexican food, specifically Gringas Tacos located in Tarrawanna in gong. Super dope place to hang out and also it’s connected to a super yummy brewery “Reub Goldberg Brewing Machine”

The just-announced dates will be Foo Fighters’ first headline tour of both countries since 2018.

Tickets go on sale Thursday 15 June via frontiertouring.com/foofighters. The American Express Pre-sale begins Friday 9 June (staggered times). Sign up for the Frontier Members Pre-sale, which starts Tuesday 13 June (times staggered) – see website for full details.

Released last Friday, Foo Fighters’ 11th studio album But Here We Are is out now on Roswell Records/RCA Records – listen here. Featuring ‘Rescued’, ‘Under You’, ‘Show Me How’, and ‘The Teacher’, the 10-track album was produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, and has been already been met with waves of critical acclaim hailing it as one of the best in the vaunted Foo Fighters catalogue. Sonically channelling the naiveté of the band’s 1995 debut, informed by decades of maturity and depth, But Here We Are is the sound of brothers finding refuge in the music that brought them together in the first place 28 years ago, a process that was as therapeutic as it was about a continuation of life.

Joining Foo Fighters as special guests are:

(Perth, Adelaide, Sydney + Brisbane): QLD punkers The Chats conquered the globe in 2017 with ‘Smoko’ then hit #1 with LP Get F**cked. Hands down the world’s greatest post-millennial punk-rock group, they’ll be match-fit by November following a 28-date US tour in October.

(Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane): Manchester duo Hot Milk release their debut album A Call To The Void in August, in between northern hemisphere sets at festivals Download, Lollapalooza, Reading, and more.

Melbourne: Channelling Riot Grrrl-era energy with a 2023 spin, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers wrapped their debut UK tour last month. EP Pretty Good For A Girl Band stands testament as a powerful documentation of voicing what the band stand for.

Perth: After taking out triple j’s Unearthed High crown in 2020 and touring the country as part of festival line-ups since, Adelaide duo and self-proclaimed “Juice-box punk-pop” girls Teenage Jones headed to Austin, Texas, to make their SXSW debut in 2023.

Adelaide: Sydney four-piece Body Type amassed critical acclaim with 2022 debut Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing’s Surprising, nominated for ‘Record of Year’ by FBI Radio. Get your head around their new album, Expired Candy.

(Aotearoa, all shows): An essential party-punk voice for working people, five-piece Dick Move are notorious for their pumping live shows. Their blink-and-you’ll-miss-it punk anthems can be heard on latest album Chop.

With demand sure to be high for these eight shows, fans are urged to act quickly to secure tickets… Don’t miss the one and only Foo Fighters, touring Australia and New Zealand this summer!
