CROCODYLUS DROP NEW VIDEO FOR "SOCIAL CLIMBER"

CROCODYLUS DROP NEW VIDEO FOR ‘SOCIAL CLIMBER’ Social Climber / Camouflage 7” Out October 16 via Bargain Bin Records

written by the partae

“Crocodylus have nailed this one” 5/5 stars – Declan Byrne triple J Home & Hosed

“Social Climber’ is a fun garage-y number that’ll be running around your head all day” – Life Without Andy

“An absolute blast” – AU Review

Sydney’s Crocodylus have dropped a nostalgic new video for their current single “Social Climber”, lifted from their forthcoming Social Climber / Camouflage 7” vinyl, set for release on October 16 via Bargain Bin Records.

The video for “Social Climber” was captured in Ginkin, NSW on a particularly cold day in August. Holed up in the tiny regional town working on their debut album, on the final day of the writing trip it started snowing, so Crocs grabbed their gear, dashed outside and started filming. The video is interspersed with their favourite tour footage collected over the last four years, giving it an air of both nostalgia and hope. The video premiered on triple j Unearthed last night and is essential viewing.

On the video, drummer Mikel Salvador says: “It was snowing, which was super lucky. Always feel like we get really lucky with the weather in our videos, like the sky in “Adrenaline”, or the sunset in “Ghosts”. Jamieson (Kerr – Director/Cinematographer) also used some old lenses from the 60s to shoot it, and it really kinda gives it that old vibe, although to me it looks a lot older than the 60s, feels like we’re in France in 1916 or something. We only had like 20 minutes or snow for that shoot too, so we were hurrying all over the place, same with the shots of us playing our instruments, it’s kinda hard to tell but it was full-on raining during that part and all our nice gear got soaked!

“The flashbacks in the video harken back to old times, it wasn’t a conscious decision to look back to pre-COVID days in the music scene, Jamieson has been working on this video for a year or so, gathering footage and all that. He’s been filming and hanging out with us for almost four years now and has gotten a lot of footage and special moments that we’ve all shared together. The current state of the music scene and the world is a fitting context for these scenes however it was not intended. It’s a lovely feeling watching that old footage and coming to terms with the current situation, but also getting excited for when we can do it all again.”

Recorded right before Sydney went into lockdown earlier this year, the double A-Side 7″ features soon-to-be-released “Camouflage”, boasting a classic Crocs feel, and current single “Social Climber”, which was written four years ago and reveals a different side to the Northern Beaches trio.

A jangly garage rock anthem-in-waiting, “Social Climber” is the band’s most poignant song yet and was embraced upon its release earlier this month. Premiering on triple j’s Home & Hosed, “Social Climber” has landed a spot on triple j Unearthed and Edge Radio rotation, and is currently among the top 10 most played on Three D Radio. “Social Climber” was also earmarked as Track of the Day on the AU Review, one of Life Without Andy’s Five Fresh Tracks and Something You Said’s Top 10 Tunes of the Week.

Sydney hip hop artist Lanstan debuts new single, ‘Trophy’
Music InterviewsMusic News

Lanstan

by the partae September 21, 2020
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m from Sydney’s Northern Beaches! I have lived here my whole life.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

My Covid experience was confusing and frustrating at times as I’m sure it has been for most people but I was also very blessed that my girlfriend moved in with me just before it all went crazy. We got a lot of time to hang out, relax and get a lot of song writing done.

How did you first start playing music?

I started playing piano in primary school. After a few years, I stopped and then ultimately picked up guitar instead. In high school my mates and I used to steal the guitars from the music room and jam in the park across the road. That was where I really found my passion for music.

Your new single ‘Trophy’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

My song writing never really feels influenced by anyone as I usually let my mind go blank and just see what comes out. The melodies that my vocals found were mostly just me dancing with the instrumental and the lyrics came from somewhere deep in my subconscious. The project I’m currently working on focusses on themes of ambition, hunger and pride, so to me Trophy feels like the track that best embodies the project as a whole.

How did you go about writing Trophy?

I had spent the last couple of weeks writing, recording, sending emails, finalising features and filming videos when I woke up to the realisation that I was finally at the point in my career that I had been dreaming of. I finally have business to attend to at all times and people who are waiting to hear what I create. This song was me allowing myself to be proud of that while still being aware of how much work I still have to do.

Where and when did you record/produce and who did you work with?

I recorded this track with Espa at his studio in Five Dock. My homie Ollie Roland mixed it for me in one massive 10 hour session. I drove to his house at 8pm and told him I needed this track to be perfect. I ended up driving home at 6am in the morning feeling very accomplished but mostly exhausted.

Where can we listen/buy?

Trophy is on every major streaming service! If you wanted to buy the song on Itunes or whatever people do these days that would be great too! The best way to support me is by joining up as a member on my website lanstanmusic.com

What do you like to do away from music?

Not much. If I’m not listening to or creating music, I’m sorting things out on the business end.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Recently, I’ve been loving watching The Kid Laroi’s run unfold. His album was as good as I could’ve hoped for and has already made a massive shift in the way Australian hip-hop is perceived.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

Just to keep dropping music! I spent the first half of the year organising a massive run for the back end. Now I’m working to make sure there’s a new song out every few weeks.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Bacon Egg Roll! I just have to try and not eat one every day. My favourite place to hang out is the studio. When the vibes are good in there, nothing beats it.

Death Bells New Signs of Life Album Promo Service Out This Friday Sep 25 On Dais Records

by the partae September 21, 2020
written by the partae

Today Death Bells announce their new album New Signs of Life and share its title-track, a grandiose statement, influenced by the theme song of HBO’s classic television program Six Feet Under. The album is due 25th September via Dais Records, pre-order here: https://n-s-o-l.com/

The LA-via-Australia duo deliver a shopping list of personal neuroses charged with wry optimism in ‘New Signs of Life‘, dressing it with jagged guitars, brass, and percussion that provides a deliberate pace for Death Bell’s new chapter. As method gives way to melody, ‘New Signs of Life’ exudes an urgent hope laced with drive and verve

“We started writing ‘New Signs of Life’ in Calgary whilst on tour around this time last year. More than anything, the song is about resilience in the face of change. It’s a very deliberate statement and sets the tone for what’s to come musically from us,” the band explain.

Death Bells is the longtime musical collaboration between Will Canning and Remy Veselis. Formed in 2015 during their late adolescent years in Sydney, Australia, the act has proven to be a mainstay in the alternative underground musical landscape both in their homeland and overseas during their five-year history. Blurring the lines of post-punk and garage rock, Death Bells has morphed and transformed as the two members have grown up throughout their late teenage years living together into early adulthood. With Canning’s distinctive baritone and the kinetic collection of reverb-drenched leads by Veselis being a constant during their musical output, the two made the permanent move 7,000 miles away to Los Angeles, California in 2018 where the current incarnation of Death Bells has blossomed.

Following the releases of their debut E.P, much-loved first album, and seven-inch single on Funeral Party Records and their 2019 single on Metropolitan Indian, Death Bells have joined the Dais Records family for their highly anticipated sophomore album New Signs of Life. Three years in the making, the release sees the act embrace their diverse tastes to deliver unforgettable hooks and more expansive sounds across its nine graceful songs.

Engineered and mixed under the attentive eye of Colin Knight at Paradise Studios throughout mid-to-late 2019, New Signs of Life is the band’s most complete work to date. Along with classic Death Bells brooding romanticism, the themes of the record divulge personal insight into their move across the world and both the strained and new relationships that have materialized throughout their existence. Slated for release on September 25th, New Signs of Life is as advertised – it is the career-defining new chapter to commence the new decade.

Sydney hip hop artist Lanstan debuts new single, ‘Trophy’

by the partae September 21, 2020
written by the partae
At only 21 years of age, Sydney’s Lanstan is consistently pushing himself toward wider praise as he weaves a wide range of hip-hop influences with introspective and self-aware songwriting. Today, he unveils his latest project, the bold and ambitious ‘Trophy’.

Following on from ‘Blueprint’ earlier this year, Lanstan has kept the same energy when it comes to his new single: he is an artist who knows what he wants and he’s undeterred when it comes to his strive for success.

Making his debut back in 2017 with viral hit ‘Garn Servo’, Lanstan moved quickly to keep the momentum growing, fleshing out his body of work into 2019 with the release of ‘Dream State’ (produced by Kuren) and ‘Go To  Sleep’. While the vibe of each song differs, what remains the same is Lanstan’s dynamism and enthusiasm for the craft. And it’s the same with ‘Trophy’. “I usually begin writing any song with one standalone melody. I feel like within any instrumental there is only one perfect melody and my first task is always to find it. Once I’ve found it, the rest of the song seems to build itself naturally around it. With ‘Trophy’ I heard the melody instantly and sang it out loud during my first listen of the beat. The entrancingly rhythmic flute and guitars seemed to tell a story of pain and struggle, but at the same time felt victorious.” Lanstan

Throughout his burgeoning career, Lanstan has been open about his journey in exploring different sounds and establishing an identity on track that sets him apart. With ‘Trophy’, he’s introducing himself to newcomers and showing his longtime fans the type of artist he’s flourishing into as 2020 rolls on out.

PRAISE FOR LANSTAN

“Hailing from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, 21 year old Lanstan is one of Australian hip-hop’s brightest up and comers.”
Good Call Live

“The melodies in this are hard to deny, it feels bold without being too egotistical…”
Triple J, Declan Byrne (‘Blueprint’, 2020)

“Lanstan has continued to build his brand and loyal following through conceptually immersive projects.”
Black of Hearts

‘Trophy’ is released Friday, September 18th.

OBSCURA HAIL Siren EP is out now! Share new video for ‘Penumbra’

Praise for Obscura Hail

‘Idle Hands’ – Premiered via RRR Breakfasters
‘Penumbra’ – Premiered via RTR FM Breakfast

“consoling, cathartic indie rock that will make you feel less alone” – NME, ★★★★

“Sludge never held so much beauty.” – Richard Kingsmill via triple j Unearthed ★★★★☆

“Obscura Hail cement their reputation as an outfit with a firm grasp of the emotional zeitgeist, handling modern-day heaviness with the gentle, clear-eyed intelligence of forebears like The Cure and Sujan Stevens.” – The Music

“2020 has been a tough year all round, but I get the feeling it’s been a good one for Sean Conran. He’s got his band, he’s enjoying the fruits of signing to Dot Dash and he’s pushing his songcraft ever forward. The sweetly irrepressible pop of Siren is like his own spirit, across the EP he’s rolling with the punches and even reaching out to others, saying, ‘hey, we can do this.’” – 4ZZZ

“One moment soaked with post-punk, one moment abstractly folky in the vein of Andrew Bird, with a healthy dose of Sufjan Stevens splashed over the top, it’s no surprise that the band has been turning heads over the past few years with their unique and clever arrangements” – Tone Deaf

“they’ve gone from a quirky bedroom goth-pop project to a small phenomenon gracing the indie scene.” – Casual Band Blogger

“Wrapped up in just under 4 minutes of bass fuzz, sparkling guitar riffs, harmonies and ever calming drums, Doomer is a feat of songwriting impossible to ignore. Truly, one of the best songs of the year to date.” – Laundry Echo

“You gotta love this one.” – Austin Town Hall

“Fluid chord changes and energetic instrumental textures support a unique vocal delivery as Sean Conran’s finds clarity in the depths of his own fuzz.” – Hard Of Hearing (US)

“The unusual vocal delivery, especially the use of dual vocals from the middle of the track onwards, really adds a unique, fresh edge.” – Mix It All Up (UK)

Today, Obscura Hail – the Melbourne-via-Wollongong indie rock trio, helmed by musician Sean Conran, digitally release their new EP Siren via Dot Dash / Remote Control, and physically as a combined Siren EP / Zero EP on 12″ vinyl. The band have also shared a beautiful video for ‘Penumbra‘ – directed by Rick Clifford and shot in Conran’s lounge room during Melbourne’s lockdown.

Conran says of the video – “This one was low key special for us, we filmed it in our recently born loungeroom live-stream studio in front of an old overhead projector, just Tam and I, having streamed a set early that day in the same outfits. The stool spinning was a big plus and obvs put us in a good mood to sing along to a track that contains so many strong memories. Those Gameboy Cam photos were the first I ever snapped, and I couldn’t bring myself to delete them to make room for more so they sat on that cartridge since the first week I was using it! Rick knew how to bring the best out of what we filmed, and even added a neat Gameboy era intro that triggers some super strong nostalgia.”

Using Obscura Hail as a vessel, Conran is externalising memory for the sake of preservation. Over an untold number of late-night recording sessions in an evolving ad-hoc home studio, Conran has amassed a rich musical archive of alternating styles and an obsessive commitment to songwriting as a craft.

A project that began as a way to remember, Conran shares – “Obscura Hail began as a routine of externalising memory for the sake of preservation due to a fear of Alzheimer’s. It was brought on by receiving my first amalgam filling; to carry on a legacy, to calcify meaning and importance of my lived experience, should I need reminding.”

The full Obscura Hail band displays cross-sections of Conran’s personal routine. Balanced out by Tamara Issa (bass, vocals) and Kaelan Edmond (drums), Obscura Hail combines biting guitars, beautiful harmonies, atmospheric acoustic percussion, loops and drum machines to deliver something dynamic and existentially curated. Should you be in the right place at the right time; you might also witness an accompanying set of home-stitched visuals that translate the themes of these seemingly optimistic songs in a way you cannot unsee.

Siren EP follows the release of last years Zero EP which saw Obscura Hail looking inwards and focusing on themes including mortality, personal values and a touch of hopelessness. As a counterbalance to Zero, the Siren EP in Conran’s words “is charged with an optimistic, though anxious energy… A fight or flight response to the instability of our modern world at this time.”

The release of Zero EP saw the band widely supported across Australian radio – reaching #1 on the AMRAP metro charts soon after release in November 2019. Amassing a fiercely loyal following, the band have sold out their last three headline launches in Melbourne. They’ve appeared at Brunswick Music Festival, Sydney Road Street Festival, By The Meadow, Changes Festival, Kyneton Music Festival, Isol-Aid Festival & Bigsound 2019 as well as sharing stages with Kele Okereke (Block Party), Aldous Harding, Julia Jacklin, Cam Avery (Tame Impala, Pond), Soaked Oats and Bad//Dreems.

A. SWAYZE & THE GHOSTS DEBUT ALBUM PAID SALVATION OUT TODAY! WATCH THE VIDEO FOR 'EVIL EYES' + TASSIE SHOWS ANNOUNCED

A. Swayze & the Ghosts’ Debut Album ‘Paid Salvation’ Out Now! | Watch The Video For ‘Evil Eyes’ | Tassie Shows Announced

by the partae September 20, 2020
written by the partae
“this adrenalised debut’s handful of instant classics is way above par throughout”
– MOJO 4/5 STARS
“the album tackles everything from ecocide to social media addiction to religion, with no punches pulled. Expect to see it high on the ‘Best Of 2020’ lists come December.” – THE MUSIC (ALBUM OF THE WEEK)
“a debut album that knits form and content into some of the most spirited punk finery you’ll hear this year” – STACK MAGAZINE
“forward-thinking rock & roll that nods to the past but forges its own path into the (relative) unknown” – BLUNT MAGAZINE
“purveyors of some of the greatest intelligent pop songs around”
– BACKSEAT MAFIA 8.8/10
Ivy League Records is elated to release A. Swayze & the Ghosts’ wildly anticipated debut album Paid Salvation – a refreshingly real breath of fresh air, one that restores your faith in the incendiary, uplifting and subversive power of punk rock. To coincide with the release, the band have dropped the video for their gloriously punchy new single ‘Evil Eyes’ and, much to the delight of Tassie fans (and the envy of fans elsewhere) today announced three headline COVID-safe shows across Hobart (Oct 17), Launceston (Oct 31) and Devonport (Nov 7).

Charging in at a total length of 1:58, frontman Andrew Swayze says of ‘Evil Eyes’: “This was brought to us by Hendrik one night in our studio as a short fun song he’d written years before. I read into it as a weird homage to the delusions of mental illness so I re-worked them and added the ‘psycho passion’ section”.

On the band’s blistering debut record Paid Salvation – recorded in Northcote with producer Dean Tuza (These New South Whales, Stella Donnelly) – Swayze pulls no punches, using the group’s urgent and tightly wound music as a backdrop against which he can purge himself of the myriad frustrations he has with the world around him. Taking aim at social media (‘Connect to Consume’), ecocide (‘Beaches’), tall poppy syndrome (‘Rich’), mob-rule and herd mentality (‘Marigold’), it seems little escapes his ire, even God and the Bible get a good lashing. It’s safe to say we’re not in standard garage punk territory.

On first listen, it would be easy to take the album on face value, enjoying it purely for its many musical pleasures: energetic guitar interplay, pummeling rhythms, basslines that groove and an infectious shout-along melodic sensibility that runs throughout. But that’s the real power of Paid Salvation. While it’s a hell of a lot of fun, it’s also deadly serious.

“It really shits me off when bands have this pedestal and they have the ability to influence so much around them and they waste it by singing about stupid shit. If you’re given this audience, I think you have to have something to say. And I definitely intend on abusing that right.”  Swayze says

“I want people to go, ‘I love that song it makes me dance but I also appreciate the honesty. I want the melodies and the instrumentals to be accessible for people from all sorts of backgrounds, but I also want everyone to fucking listen to what I’m saying as well. And I especially want young men to hear songs like ‘Suddenly’ and ‘It’s Not Alright’ and think about what they’re saying rather than just listening to them and going, ‘Yeah I’m all jacked up on this rock song!’ he laughs. With AS&TG, the music is the sugar that makes the medicine easier to swallow.

Over the last two years A.Swayze & the Ghosts have performed at Falls Festival, Splendour in the Grass, The Great Escape, BIGSOUND (in many ‘best of’ lists across STACK, triple j, Double J, The Music), A Festival Called Panama and Boogie Festival. MELBOURNE ART-PUNK DUO NOCON Jamie Timony (MOSSY/These New South Whales) and Jake O’Brien NEW SINGLE ‘HOAX’ OUT NOW VIA DINOSAUR CITY RECORDS

by the partae September 20, 2020
written by the partae

NOCON, the brand new art-punk project of Melbourne’s Jamie Timony (MOSSY/These New South Whales) and Jake O’Brien, today share new single ‘HOAX’ following its debut on triple j last night.

Out now on Dinosaur City Records, ‘HOAX’ is NOCON’s second single and follows the release of skuzzy punk track ‘AGAG’ (April 2020), which turned heads at triple j, double j, NME, Weirdo Wasteland, Tone Deaf, 2SER and Triple R among others, and landed rotation on FBi Radio and Edge FM.

Listen/download ‘HOAX‘ HERE.

Written, recorded and produced remotely by Jamie and Jake during a winter in isolation and mixed by Dean Tuza, ‘HOAX’ sticks to the parameters established with ‘AGAG’ with bendy guitars and driving bass, while leaning further into the band’s influences from trap, emo and cloud rap.

PRAISE FOR NOCON

“Snazzy scuzzy punk that’s about as humble in its origins as any off-the-cuff bedroom recording,
but with a sharper edge.”

– Weirdo Wasteland

“Discordant, lo-fi, crosseyed punk that i can’t help but march along with.”
– Declan Byrne, triple j

‘HOAX’ features Jamie and Jake on alternating vocal duties with the addition of guitar, bass, an 808 and crumby samples. The idea for the song is best summarised by the key image called to mind by the monotonously delivered chorus lyrics: “That was just a hoax / That was just two kids stacked up high in a trench coat / Moustache / Trying to buy some smokes”.

The band explain the track: “‘HOAX’ is about being spoon-fed fallacies your entire life from every angle imaginable—being lied to, misled and manipulated into a trance.”

‘HOAX’ is out Friday September 18 via Dinosaur City Records.

Listen to ‘HOAX’ here.

The Brazilian singer-songwriter got inspiration from New York Times’ best selling book for this new track. “There’s must be better angels… Who loves…” these are the words that Luiz Faria sings on his new single, from his upcoming album “Battle Scars”. The new track is an indie-pop style, led by the strong synth and vocals, while the lyrics tell the story about something that was with him during his quarantine in Brazil. “I’m a huge fan of Cassandra Clare’s books and when I finished Chain of Gold, that ending got stuck inside my mind, and I was in shock because, you know, everything happening with the characters in such a waterfall way, so I got this idea to tell the story about that book and its personas”, said Luiz after finishing the recording session is his house in Brazil. The song was produced by Jordie Saenz, a California-based music producer, who made songs from Love You Later, JAE BLAK and Super Whatevr. And they made it across the sea, uniting the willing to create something different. “This song was out of my comfort zone, because it’s the first time that I wrote something from another person’s perspective and I gave Jordie all the creative license that he needed to make it happen. In the end, we are very happy with the track”, said Luiz explaining that he wrote the song in one morning. VANCOUVER MUSICIAN QUINN PICKERING RELEASES BITTERSWEET NEW SINGLE ‘GRAPEFRUIT’

by the partae September 20, 2020
written by the partae
If the pandemic has brought on feelings of nostalgia and the need for a sweet pop song with a bit of sting, Vancouver musician Quinn Pickering’s new track ‘Grapefruit’ is just what you’re looking for! Out today, ‘Grapefruit‘ is the 1st single from Quinn’s new EP Supernova set for release on November 13th via producer Howard Redekopp’s new record label How Weird Sounds.

Full of nostalgic, melancholic longing, ‘Grapefruit’ explores the feeling of trying to shake special memories that over time have turned bittersweet.“The songis about how memories and emotions can be triggered in the most unexpected of ways,” says Quinn Pickering. “The song had lived in my head for a few years until the faint scent of Grapefruit Rose stepped in and gave me the necessary inspiration to finish the song and close the book on that chapter of my life.”

Quinn Pickering is a young singer-songwriter leading a new generation of artists who are redefining the indie music landscape. At 20, he has spent over half his life playing guitar, writing songs, and releasing albums. Raised in New Westminster, BC, to a musical family of Métis descent, his interest and passion for music and songwriting led to the formation of his first band, World Is History, when he was just nine years old.

Earlier this year, Quinn signed with How Weird Sounds to release Supernova, a five song EP executive produced by Howard Redekopp and produced, mixed and engineered by Stefan Nowarre. Set for release on November 13th, Supernova showcases Quinn’s youthful energy and love of classic songwriting, and puts his voice at the centre of it all. Quinn has shown a remarkable gift for connecting with audiences through his songs, and at just twenty years old, there’s no telling how much more he’s capable of.

‘Grapefruit’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more information, please visit: quinnpickering.org

“Velvet Bloom consistently gives me shivers. Her music is enchanting and laidback. It’s always a pleasure finding out what’s in store  with this artist.” - Nkechi Anele (Triple J Roots N All)  - “Your voice is stellar. It's got so much character and soul to it. It's so clear and it just oozes with star power.” - Claire Mooney (Triple J  Unearthed)   Hailing from Melbourne, Velvet Bloom releases a slinky new single ‘7Hundred25’  encompassing the very essence of longing and the prospect of loss.   Oozing with lush vocals and honey dipped stripped back acoustics, ’7Hundred25’ takes  listeners on a journey, subtly introducing elements until you realise that you are in the  midst of an electronic strings section with choir like harmonies, rolling cymbal crashes  and droning bass notes.   The single speaks to the fact that an acoustic style song can be entirely full without a  major drum and bass section.  Velvet Bloom is a neo-soul, alternative-pop and jazz-rock music project with captivating  ballad style vocals. The project is fronted and founded by Maddy Herbert, she performs  solo and with different variations of her live band “The Vito Collective”.  This intricate single will be released as a part of a ‘Cousin Will Records’ compilation  album with artists like ‘The Grogans’, ‘Auntie Leo And The Backstabbers’, ‘Polly And The  Pockets’ and the like.  The band had a huge 2019 with the re-release of Maddy’s debut EP ‘Bitter Sweet’, as well  as the release of singles’ ‘Isobel’s Song – Live At Box Hill’, ‘Teach Ya’ and ‘DM ME’  receiving praise and airplay from Triple J/Triple J Unearthed. Velvet Bloom also won  Listen Up Music Org’s 2019 national ‘Songs That Heal’ competition. In early 2020 saw the  release of ‘Standards’, an up beat alternative-rock, soul- pop track that showcases  Maddy’s raw and powerful vocals.   During COVID-19 Maddy was accepted into the MIME mentoring program through Boxhill  Institute and is currently being mentored by Kylie Auldist.   If that’s not enough the band has also supported many established Australian acts like  Kim Churchill, Josh Cashman, Death By Denim, Dulcie, The Grogans, Great Gable, Ben  Wright-Smith, Zoe Fox And The Rocket Clocks, Teenage Dads to name a few.  https://www.facebook.com/velvetbloom.music/ https://www.instagram.com/velvetbloom.music/ https://velvetbloom.bandcamp.com/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLsOjd3he7oB58TqtCDNkgg?view_as=subscriber

Velvet Bloom

Where are you currently based?

I live on the Mornington peninsula in Victoria!

The boys are also originally from the area and Yara lives in Kew! It’s so nice being away from chaos of the city at the moment and having some calm!

What’s been happening recently and how has you Covid experience been so far?

It’s been challenging hey.

There have been lots of ups and downs but I feel that we are incredibly privileged to live in this beautiful part of the world and have access to all of the assistance and resources that we do.

I’ve taken this time to centre myself and write lots of new tunes.

Your new single ‘7Hundred25’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The subject matter of 7Hundred25 revolves around realisation and acceptance. We wanted an extremely gradual build and to make the song fee like it was forever growing.

7Hundred25 has this simplistic and raw energy to it and we wanted it to really develop during the recording process!

How did you go about writing the track?

For this track in particular, I created the foundation with a simple two chord progression. The melody had already came to me and I wanted to incorporate numbers into my writing. Once I started jamming it out in my bedroom, I recorded a demo with harmonies – this is when the magic started to happen and the tune really came together!

Where and when did you record and who with?

We recorded with Quin Grunden, partly at Boxhill Institute and partly in his studio.

This track is a part of a compilation album released through Cousin Will Records so we are stoked to be a part of it!

How did you approach the recording process?

I think this song had a really solid structure coming into the studio. We knew which elements that we wanted to incorporate but hadn’t fully refined them yet. 7Hundred25 was recorded over roughly six sessions and we had lots of time between our studio visits to evolve our ideas even further.

What programs/equipment did you use?

A stand out piece of equipment that we used for recording was the E-Bow. Our guitarist, Alex Marko, made the track shine with its beautiful, meditative, layered drone – it almost sounds like a violin!

Please tell us about the track vocals and instrumentation/harmony layers:

Vocals have always been at the forefront of our music. I resonate most with raw, powerful and emotive voices and lyricism.

We had so much fun adding all of the layers to the track and really adding that dynamic build.

I wanted the vocals / harmonies to become more emotional and prevalent as the song progressed and I feel that we achieved that.

We layered different sounds on Yara’s nord, had about 8 guitar tracks, a grand piano track, 2 bass tracks, a cymbal track, about 8 harmony tracks and the lead vocal track.

You run a charity organisation called Flo Events, please tell us about this:

Flo Creative Events is a not-for-profit events company that I co run with my beautiful artist friend, Shan Primrose. I guess our main focuses are creativity, community and charity.

We create various opportunities for people of various artistic backgrounds and local businesses. Shan and I put on wholesome events and quarterly magazines with each project donating money to important organisations. Flo is such a lovely community and we are super blessed to be a part of it!

What is your role in Fem Jams and what is Fem Jams all about?

Fem Jams is a project that I co run with Yara Alkurd and Pia Nesvara! These queens and I decided to create an empowering and inclusive jam space for all womxan.

Fem Jams occurs once a month at the Night Cat (out of isolation) and we curate an all female house band performance, paired with open jams once the energy is there!

We encourage woman to  network and support one another in this space and in the broader community!

You also book gender equality driven nights at the Night Cat called ‘Sonic Textures’ please tell us more:

I miss Sonic Textures so much.

Tuesday nights (pre Covid) I hosted events at the Night Cat that always had equal female representation for an entire year.

It was such a beautiful space and I can’t wait to get back into the swing of things to discover more incredible emerging artists and showcase their talent!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Lots of Lianne La Havas, Nasty Mars, Raveena and Lief Vollebekk!

Also heaps of local Aussie acts like Dulcie, Great Gable, Rissa, Benjamin Trillado, Indigo Mckeon and many more – what a great time to soak up all of the music!

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

We are planning to record and release an EP over the next 9 months. Unfortunately our national October Tour with Great Gable was postponed but we hope that we can get something going in 2021.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

At the moment I really miss The Night Cat –  being able to work at or watch a stunning performance then head to Shawcross Pizza on Brunswick street to get a late night slice was always such a good time!

With recent news that their Big Grief tour would only be going ahead in a limited format, Brisbane heavy hitters WAAX, while crushed to have had to take these measures are committed to make it up to their loyal fans with a special streamed performance.   WAAX will perform selections from their amazing debut Big Grief within Brisbane’s famous Tivoli in front of an intimate (and socially distanced) live audience.   Big Grief explores the very definition of the word grief in universal terms; it’s a mourning that as sentient beings in the modern world, with all its technological trappings, we should all be able to relate to.   As the band’s firebrand vocalist Maz DeVita states, “the whole album is about grief for so many things that I felt when we were writing the record. The way the world is at the moment, the environment, I talk about coal, I talk about problems in the past with my body image, and it’s almost like a big mourning. It’s definitely an outpouring of grief in every sense of the word.”   The show will be streamed live, and will not be available to view online following the event. Please note during the event you will not be able to pause, rewind or fast forward the stream.   “We are thrilled to be able to create this experience, we love our community so much. KWAME RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘TOMMY’S IN TROUBLE ft. CLYPSO + Phil Fresh’ Please, Get Home Safe EP out Oct 30th

by the partae September 19, 2020
written by the partae

Released today, ‘TOMMY’S IN TROUBLE ft. CLYPSO + Phil
Fresh’
is a piece that reflects upon external forces that can be oppressive in nature and at times, debilitating. Kwame’s point of view is subjective and narrates his experiences as he manoeuvres his way through a world in which is both macabre and beautiful at the same time.

‘TOMMY’S IN TROUBLE ft. CLYPSO + Phil Fresh’ is the third track to be released from Kwame’s forthcoming EP, Please, Get Home Safe Out Friday October 30th

The new single speaks on the warped perceptions and boundaries of society that an individual face often being villainized when being outspoken and providing voices on the unheard.

The piece highlights two separate perspectives showcased through fellow Sydney artists CLYPSO and Phil Fresh. Both perspectives draw different themes and translate them through the musicality of the piece.

“Table’s set and the tree is lit, TOMMY got himself in trouble”, as performed by CLYPSO in the song’s chorus, represents the movement against the parameters imposed by a society that limits creative output and the unity of race. The addition of Phil Fresh in the second half of the song to which accompanied by Kwame elevates the piece to a place where it’s no-holds-barred.

The energy, character and conviction of both Kwame and Phil Fresh through their carefully thought out lyrics showcase the artists speaking out on the unheard, refusing to be villainized and oppressed.

Whilst the piece may be from the point of view of Kwame’s personal experience, it acts as a voice to others who may face similar trials and tribulations irrespective of race, gender, sexuality and creative outputs.

‘TOMMY’S IN TROUBLE ft. CLYPSO + Phil Fresh’ follows ‘schleep.’ – a surprise flex track that dropped in March and further showcased the 22-year-old Ghanaian-Australian producer, writer, rapper, engineer’s unpredictability and flow. The track which won’t feature on Kwame’s upcoming EP has gone on to amassed over 1.5m streams and was performed live on day of release when U.S. rapper A$AP Ferg, whom Kwame supported in Melbourne, pulled the young artist up on stage during his sold-out Sydney show.

SUNFLOWER BEAN SHARE NEW SINGLE ‘MOMENT IN THE SUN’

by the partae September 19, 2020
written by the partae

Sunflower Bean return with their first new material of 2020, ‘Moment In The Sun’. Written about realising what’s most important in life is spending time with the ones you love, ‘Moment In The Sun’ resonates now more than ever.

“‘Moment In The Sun’ is about finally recognizing what is important in one’s life, the people you decide to spend it with,” Sunflower Bean explains of the track. “All of these things we distract ourselves with, the neverending mountain of career climbing, the pursuit of financial success, and the hope that after all that trying you could finally be cool. All of that is meaningless in comparison to one great day, hour, or moment with someone you really love.”

‘Moment In The Sun’ premiered overnight as Hottest Record In The World with Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1. Produced by Dave Bassett (Vance Joy, Bishop Briggs) and Jacob Portrait (of Unknown Mortal Orchestra), the song comes with a video made with VMA-nominated directors Andy DeLuca and Sarah Eisman.

The band further explains of the video, “while quarantining together upstate this summer we decided to make a music video for ‘Moment In The Sun.’ We thought the best way to visually represent the meaning of the song, while also taking inspiration from this isolating time everyone has been forced to live in, was to create two separate worlds. One world which exists totally inside a home, mostly in a lonely bedroom. The other world exists completely outside in the sun and is made up of memories of a summer love. We invited Marquis Rodriguez (When They See Us), to co-star in the video, and he was crucial in helping us tell the story of summer love and show those potent memories of tenderness coming to life. While living alone, the character Julia is portraying becomes flooded with memories and moments from the past summer, and as a result her bedroom starts to transform into the outdoor world. We built up the entire bedroom using real sod and flowers. Her memories are brought to life, just like the room.”

New York trio Sunflower Bean (Julia Cumming, Nick Kivlen, Jacob Faber), released their sophomore album Twentytwo In Blue in 2018, and quickly followed it with 2019’s King Of The Dudes EP. Since then, the band open for Bernie Sanders and The Strokes, have toured with Wolf Alice, Courtney Barnett, and more, while playing countless festivals around the world.
