Producer Peter Dallas releases the new single ‘Your Lover’ ahead of his upcoming debut EP ‘The Ballad of Peter Dallas’. The electro indie track offers a chilled yet vibrant soundscape that would sound at home on the soundtrack of any popular coming-of-age show. With shimmering synths, breathy vocals and a pulsating bassline, this dreamy track is indicative of Peter’s immense talent. Producer Peter Dallas releases the new single ‘Your Lover’ ahead of his upcoming debut EP ‘The Ballad of Peter Dallas’. PLANTS AND ANIMALS New album The Jungle out now

Plants and Animals’ brand new album The Jungle is out now via Secret City Records / Remote Control. To celebrate, the band will host a listening event on YouTube and will be chatting live with fans as they listen to the record in its entirety. Exclaim! gave the record four stars: “The Jungle, […] clearly displays its references; this album’s transmutations, however, are the band’s most consistently sublime and seem to have been rendered effortlessly in comparison to previous work. With The Jungle, Plants and Animals claim a more definitive and cogent sense of identity, maximizing a talent for both interpretation and invention.” Rolling Stone France stated that the new album is bold: “The opus revolves around eight songs with a strong message. These musical snapshots offer a panoramic view of what the year 2020 was, its social and political crises, then the COVID-19 epidemic. The ample, solid production catches the ear and demands curiosity and attention, with its intelligent arrangements full of subtleties.” Shakenstir calls it “optimum entertainment.” Since last June the band has released four tracks from the new album. Consequence of Sound stated: “Early singles like “House on Fire” and “Sacrifice” portended a collection of catchy but chaotic sonic landscapes. The latest sample of the effort, “Le Queens,” offers a counterpoint to that aural bedlam — with a touch of Quebecois,”.

The Jungle starts with electronic drums that sound like insects at night. A whole universe comes alive in the dark. It’s beautiful, complex and unsettling. Systematic and chaotic. All instinct, no plan. Voices taunt, “yeah, yeah, yeah”. This tangled time in which we find ourselves is reflected back in shadows.

Every song is such a landscape. The first one grinds to a halt and you become a kid looking out a car window at the moon, wondering how it’s still on your tail as you speed past a steady blur of trees. You watch a house go up in a yellow strobe that echoes the disco weirdness of Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer and David Bowie. You get pummeled by a rhythm then set free by a sudden change of scenery—the wind stops, clarity returns. You’re under a streetlight in Queens, soft focus, slow motion, falling in love. You speak French now too, in case you didn’t already. Bienvenue.

These are personal experiences made in a volatile world, and they reflect that world right back at us, even by accident. There’s one song Nic sings to his teenage son who was dealing with climate change anxiety and drifting into uncharted independence. The band carries it out slowly together into a sweet blue horizon. Warren wrote the words to another shortly after losing his father. It’s about the things we inherit not necessarily being the things we want. In a broader sense, that’s where a lot of people find themselves right now.

Plants and Animals are an iconic Montreal-based trio that began playing together as kids and emerged on the international scene in 2008 with Parc Avenue. The band has developed a varied cult following ever since, built on the shoulders of their self-produced records and their intense live shows. Parc Avenue was a critically acclaimed record (Pitchfork 8/10) released during the famous Montreal-is-the-new-Seattle music moment. This release set Plants and Animals as an incredible live force, a powerful songwriting trio and opened doors for them to tour the world many times over with people like Portugal. The Man, Gnarls Barkley and more. Three other releases followed and kept the band’s status up high: La La Land (2010) “they’re complicated and gorgeous [songs] and feel as innate as desire itself.” (Paste Magazine), The End of That (2012) “vibrant, constantly rewarding” (Spin) and Waltzed in from the Rumbling (2016) “… the strike rate is remarkably high” ★★★★ (Q Magazine). The band was shortlisted (2008) and longlisted (2010) for the Polaris Music Prize and received multiple Juno Awards and ADISQ Awards nominations over the years.

Chicago-based duo LOWERLIPDRIP share their latest single ‘Flawless’, with a second track ‘Scandalous’ also dropping today as part of their 2pack project V. ‘Flawless’ is accompanied by the official video directed by Gabriella Plotkin and Derek Matar. Both tracks are available to buy and stream now via b4 / Remote Control Records.

On the lead track ‘Flawless’, the duo are rejecting the rigidity of society’s expectations of masculinity while hitching every line to their unique hip-hop production. “This is a concise statement on the duality of man and the power of self-affirmation. We want our fans to be empowered by how they look instead of burdened so that they don’t look to material objects and false ideals for validation,” the duo state. “Being yourself is always the most fashionable choice.” The track is accompanied by the official video.

Chicago duo LOWERLIPDRIP’s – AKA BlackrobeBLACKROBES and Dew Haydn – powerful, experimental productions and smooth, insightful flows immediately caught the attention of Pitchfork, Fader, and Lyrical Lemonade upon their debut 2pack in 2019. After growing up together and coming into young adulthood, LLD expand their sound and advocate for rebellion on their two-track single. The first single previewed off the group’s forthcoming third studio record, due for release in 2021, ‘Broken System’ is a searing anthem that takes aim at those who are unwilling to acknowledge their own complicity or work to dismantle systems and legacies of white supremacy, colonialism, capitalism, environmental degradation and more that have led the world to where it is now. Over a driving bass line, blistering guitars and vocals that oscillate from smearing and indignant to cavernous and portentous, ‘Broken System’ is a sub-three minute distillation of These New South Whales’ career to date, marrying the uncompromising punk ethics of their earliest material with the infectious accessibility of their recent output.

‘Broken System’ is the group’s first piece of new material since the release of their second LP, 2019’s I Just Do What God Tells Me To Do, which won the Sydney punks international praise from theneedledrop, triple j, The Line of Best Fit, Kerrang!, Mojo Magazine and more, while also showcasing the band’s rapidly maturing songwriting and a more sunnied, poppier exterior to their punk hearts.

Launching alongside the release of ‘Broken System’ is news of their upcoming comedy series which will broadcast live to air on YouTube. Following the cult success of their Comedy Central mockumentary, These New South Whales are back with an entirely new comedy series – TNSW Tonight! Think Eric Andre meets Tim Heidecker’s On Cinema. Playing parodied versions of themselves, the band members somehow land their own talk show, complete with house band (These New South Whales) and frontman Jamie Timony as host. Channeling their years of showbiz experience and industry acumen, the band will attempt to chew the fat and match their minds with some of our time’s most influential celebrities and rockstars, but in true TNSW fashion, are likely to completely blow it.

Of their latest series, Timony shares: “We can’t wait to thrust ourselves into this iconic television format. I’ve always admired Rove McManus and now I get to be him. I hope your wig has a chin strap, because your haircut’s coming off!” TNSW Tonight! will air live to Youtube weekly on Tuesdays at 9pm, the first episode debuts on October 27.

Following two full-length studio albums, two seasons of their mockumentary series and the success of their hilarious but earnest, fly-on-the-wall interview podcast What A Great Punk, TNSW Tonight! will add yet another branch to the multidisciplinary These New South Whales creative universe, the likes of which Australian music has never seen before.

Following on from his critically praised single ‘Funny Business’, Canberra-based hip hop artist Citizen Kay has returned with his up front new single ‘Don’t Blink’ – produced by the artist himself.

Opening with irresistible bass riffs and ominous police sirens, ‘Don’t Blink’ quickly drops into Kay’s distinctive delivery showcasing his deft dynamic range. As Kay’s performance crescendo’s the track builds in intensity accentuating the lyrical message of a powerful example of exquisite hip-hop.

Citizen Kay talks about the motivation behind ‘Don’t Blink’:

“It’s basically about complacency. There can be a very fine line between being understanding or patient and being complacent. There’s a time for silence and observation and a time for action and blunt conversation. Both are necessary. This is me exploring my potential complacency and questioning my next moves, questioning my motives and questioning my actions.”

Citizen Kay’s albums ‘Demokracy’ and ‘With The People’ were both nominated for an ARIA award in the ‘Best Urban Album’ category; the former was also nominated for an AIR award for ‘Best Independent Hip-Hop Album Release’. A performance soon followed on triple j’s esteemed ‘Like A Version’ segment and was met with praise by fans and critics alike.

Previous releases have also been strongly supported by Spotify, Apple Music, Complex, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers, Cool Accidents, AUD’$, Acid Stag and NME, with video clips added to rotation on ABC’s Rage. He’s also had multiple tracks added to rotation on triple j and extensive play across community radio.

His three albums, including his last ‘Belly Of The Beast‘, received top 10 placings on the US College Hip Hop charts and the single ‘Ego’ broke into the top 20 of the US NACC Singles chart. In the UK, the single picked up regional and community radio plays.

Citizen Kay has toured the country extensively, supporting hip hop luminaries Public Enemy, Run The Jewels, Ice Cube, Danny Brown, Wiz Khalifa, Earl Sweatshirt and Australian crowd favourites ILLY, Tkay Maizda and Seth Sentry. He’s also made appearances at Australian mainstay events Falls Festival and Groovin’ The Moo.

In the coming weeks, Citizen Kay will reveal an accompanying music video for ‘Don’t Blink’ directed by long-time collaborator Nic Vevers.

Perth indie-folk group JACK DAVIES and THE BUSH CHOOKS release new EP SONGS FOR A LONG WALK

Releasing some of their most personal material yet, Perth’s Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks release their new EP, Songs For A Long Walk.

A collection of moving and authentic indie-folk music, Songs For A Long Walk shines a light on the group’s defined musical identity, led by songwriter Jack Davies’ unwavering strength as a vocalist and songwriter.

Six tracks recorded at the beginning of 2020, Songs For A Long Walk were created before the world was plunged into a prolonged stage of limbo, yet when listening to the songs now in the midst of it, the comfort and warmth they exude are second to none.

From it listeners have already heard ‘Loving You’s Like A Mouldy  Cup of Tea’ and ‘Half Frozen Beer’, both strong compositions on their own, yet Songs For A Long Walk shines across the other four tracks too. Evoking the likes of Jacob Diamond, Courtney Barnett and Tom Odell in songwriting and nuanced delivery, the Songs For A Long Walk EP is inviting and intimate in the soundscapes it creates.

This is a record that shows Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks at their best, and for newcomers to the group, Songs For A Long Walk is the perfect wait to become acquainted with them.

Recorded at RADA Studios in Perth, the band were able to properly immerse themselves in the old warehouse set up, with the addition of some beautiful upright pianos that helped form the final sound of the EP. For Jack, the experience has inspired him for future recordings.

“We were able to just have fun with all these incredible instruments and microphones and record whatever we liked. Dan Carroll, who engineered and mixed the EP, has such a huge insight into recording and music in general. Working together changed my perspective on a lot of things in the recording world, I’m grateful for that. The whole process has given me so much inspiration to dig right into the next record and explore all these new ideas fully.” Jack Davies

The closeness of the band and their natural ability as players together shines throughout the EP, as it does on single ‘Half Frozen Beer’. Sharing the music video for this song, Jack Davies worked alongside photographer and videographer Annie Harvey in bringing this one to life.

Filmed in Perth during WA’s late stages of lockdown, the ‘Half Frozen Beer’ music video features Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks, albeit in a different format to normal.

“It was a rather lonely time, so I just mulled around my house recording bits ‘n bobs. We couldn’t be in groups, so we couldn’t film with my bandmates directly. Instead, I went and stood out the front of their houses and jammed along with them by their windows, kind of a play on the song and the idea of being together. It was really down to the magic of Annie Harvey’s video work that brought it together; I’m stunned by how beautiful the colours and composition of the shots came out, the band just danced around!” Jack Davies

Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks have been garnering acclaim for their music around the country, while also attracting industry praise too, having a WAM and SOTY award to their name, as well as a National Live Music Award for WA’s Best Live Act. Their brand of indie-folk music has drawn over 1.5 million streams on Spotify alone; while also emerging as a formidable touring force, with audiences around the country embracing them as headliners and supporting the likes of Tash Sultana, Weyes Blood and San Cisco. 

Off the back of their debut EP Cleaning The Dishes in 2019, Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks became a dynamic force in the WA scene, significant examples of their presence being in their ability to draw almost 500 to the modest Clancy’s Fish Pub in Fremantle and an unprecedented crowd of over 2,000 to the Fremantle Arts Centre their ‘Sunday Music Sessions’ show.

The past couple of months have seen the band return to performing to sold out crowds across the state, as restrictions continue to ease in Western Australia.

The highly anticipated debut album from Norwegian/Chilean multi-instrumentalist boy pablo (Nicolas Pablo Muñoz) is an ambitious, charming, and heartfelt indie-pop journey into the world of Wachito Rico. It is a hybrid conceptual and autobiographical record based on the character that is played in the visual universe of the LP by pablo with a perm. “Wachito Rico”, a Chilean expression meaning “handsome boy” and the idea of young love, is the overarching theme and a character Muñoz centered the album on. Throughout the LP, Muñoz will take listeners through the highs and lows of his alter-ego’s love story rooted in a happy-go-lucky attitude that keeps him grounded even when times are tough. But despite Wachito Rico’s presence as a character, the album comes from a personal place for Muñoz, as the songs are derived from the joy and pain he’s experienced throughout his young life. But even the heavier moments―like contemplating a breakup―are overshadowed by a lighter, Carpe Diem-esque tone.

Muñoz shares, “This album has been incredibly important for me. Myself, my brother Esteban and my brother-in-law Erik put in so many hours that I don’t think I could count them. Long nights, early mornings and exhausted days have been a big part of the process as have all the energetic and uplifting days where Erik and Esteban really brought out the best of me in the studio. I’ve loved and hated the record, laughed so hard it hurt and cried through some tough parts of the writing, recording and post-production process. I’m so proud and satisfied with the record and I hope that whoever is reading this gets the same kick of excitement and the same feeling of peace that I have when I listen to it.”

The rollout to Wachito Rico has seen boy pablo rapidly expanding his audience on the back of singles ‘hey girl‘ and ‘honey‘ as well as their serialized music videos telling the tale of Wachito. The final three installments of the music video series – ‘rest up‘, ‘leave me alone!‘ and ‘Wachito Rico’ are directed by bedroom projects (The 1975, beabadoobee) and will be released in the same week as the album.

While his career took off in 2017 with the viral hit ‘Everytime‘, Boy Pablo’s Nicolas Muñoz has since found himself more connected to his art than ever. While Boy Pablo initially started out as a project just for fun, Muñoz, now 21, has since honed a cohesive, creative vision, becoming a fully-fledged force to be reckoned with in the indie-pop space.

In April of this year, Yaeji released a stunning mixtape called WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던, which was noted by Time Magazine, Stereogum, Billboard, Gorilla vs Bear, New Yorker, Pitchfork and more as one of the best albums of 2020. Today Yaeji will officially release an exclusive bonus track, ‘When In Summer, I Forget About The Winter,’ originally featured on CD formats of WHAT WE DREW exclusively in Korea and Japan. Written and produced by Yaeji, the track is a lo-fi diary entry, a meditation on the changing of seasons and the ups and downs of life and love.

At the onset of WHAT WE DREW, Yaeji introduced a cast of animated companions (all illustrated by herself) including Woofa, who starred alongside Yaeji in the ‘WAKING UP DOWN’ music video. Today Yaeji will launch an interactive web-based game titled Woofa Joofa Juice Club on Yaeji.com/juiceclub. Players can choose between four playable characters, hang out at Joofa’s juice shop and order from a dozen flavours, then hit Club Yae and dance to tunes from WHAT WE DREW.

Since the release of WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던, Yaeji has continued to find meaningful ways to support her community. In August she debuted Yaeji In Place, a live DJ set and fundraiser with Boiler Room. Yaeji announced she will donate all profits of her yellow WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던 vinyl sales, purchased on Yaeji Mart and Bandcamp, to two organizations, Black Trans Femmes in the Arts (BTFA) and Black Art Futures Fund (BAFF), and with her NTS radio residency Kraeji w/Yaeji is sharing tracks that are available for purchase on BandCamp, including a Buy Music Club link alongside every episode here.

Their first studio work since 2019’s ‘Infest The Rats’ Nest’, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are back with ‘K.G.’ – their sixteenth album, and first to be composed and recorded across their homes in Melbourne. A return to microtonal territory, this 10 track opus sees the band paint from a palette that extends far beyond the musical colours of western rock. An album best described as a pure distillation of the King Gizzard sound, one that cherry picks the best aspects of previous albums and contorts them into new shapes, via defiantly non-Western rock scales.

 

The fourth single from the album ‘Automation’ is out now, a visceral hit of psych rock that explodes with frenzied groove. In true King Gizz style, the audio and video files have been made free for public use. With fans encouraged to edit these to make their own versions of the song and clip.

 

If that ain’t enough for ya, Gizz have also blessed us a new live double LP – ‘Live In San Francisco ’16 – that will be released on the same day. Just under a month after delivering their award-winning 2016 album Nonagon Infinity, King Gizzard took the stage at San Francisco’s The Independent for a set both wildly frenetic and meticulously executed. In one of their final club gigs before bursting onto the international scene—soon selling out amphitheaters and headlining festivals—the Melbourne septet laid down a breakneck performance that, in the words of SF Weekly, “made every organ ache just right.” ‘Live in San Francisco ’16’ captures an extraordinary moment in the band’s increasingly storied history, a 13-song spectacular likely to leave every listener awestruck and adrenalised. Held for the first time in a specially constructed outdoor format, the 2020 SAM Awards continue to be a highlight of the South Australian music industry calendar, celebrating the best in local music now and looking ahead to the New Year.

Helming proceedings at the SAM Awards this year will be Three D Radio’s Isaac Selby, bringing that local music expertise and knowledge to the role; guiding everyone through the ceremony, which will see the best of South Australian music celebrated across 29 Industry Voted and People’s Choice award categories.

LISTEN: 'Richard Cory' by Tiny Little Houses After a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, ‘Richard Cory’ marks a colossal return for the four-piece; inspired by the classic poem of the same title, the song is an emotional force, complete with heart-wrenching lyrics, surging guitars and of course, lead singer Caleb Karvountzis’s distinct vocals. Of the track, frontman Caleb Karvountzis says: “Richard Cory is a reimagining of a far better poem by Edwin Arlington Robinson. The first time I read it as a teenager I was completely stunned and knew one day I would try to work a song around its theme. While modernising some of the setting and language, I've tried my best to do the original poem justice, with its status themes still being relevant today.” Tiny Little Houses aren’t the only artists to take inspiration from the poem, as Caleb says, “I actually had no idea the poem also inspired a Simon & Garfunkel song until our record label pointed it out.” Remarkably the themes of the poem – originally written in 1897, then reimagined by Simon & Garfunkel in 1966 – continue to remain relevant today. Speaking of the band’s return: “We are very much looking forward to releasing new music, even in such a disruptive time. With a whole bunch of songs on the way, we think they're reflective of some of the anxieties and uncertainty that has surfaced more obviously during this last year.” ‘Richard Cory’ is the first new music from the four-piece since their acclaimed debut album, Idiot Proverbs in January 2018. Ivy League Records is elated to announce the return of beloved Melbourne outfit Tiny Little Houses with their powerful new single, ‘Richard Cory’ – out everywhere now.

An essay on the album by poet, author, and cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib (Go Ahead In The Rain, They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us, A Fortune For Your Disaster) is below. “I think that "Faith Healer" is a song about vices, both the obvious and the more insidious ways that they show up in the human experience”, says Baker. “I started writing this song 2 years ago and it began as a very literal examination of addiction. For a while, I only had the first verse, which is just a really candid confrontation of the cognitive dissonance a person who struggles with substance abuse can feel-- the overwhelming evidence that this substance is harming you, and the counterintuitive but very real craving for the relief it provides. When I revisited the song I started thinking about the parallels between the escapism of substance abuse and the other various means of escapism that had occupied a similar, if less easily identifiable, space in my psyche. There are so many channels and behaviors that we use to placate discomfort unhealthily which exist outside the formal definition of addiction. I (and so many other people) are willing to believe whomever-- a political pundit, a preacher, a drug dealer, an energy healer-- when they promise healing, and how that willingness, however genuine, might actually impede healing.” Little Oblivions was recorded in Baker’s hometown of Memphis, Tennessee between December 2019 and January 2020. It was engineered by Calvin Lauber and mixed by Craig Silvey (The National, Florence & the Machine, Arcade Fire). Baker’s tactile guitar and piano playing are enriched with newfound textures encompassing bass, drums, synthesizers, banjo and mandolin, with nearly all of the instruments performed by Baker. The album weaves unflinching autobiography with assimilated experience and often hard-won observations from the past few years, taking Baker’s capacity for starkly galvanizing storytelling to breathtaking new heights. Little Oblivions is the follow up to Baker’s 2017 sophomore album and first on Matador Turn Out The Lights. The New York Times said the LP is “the work of a songwriter who has resonated with an international audience (…), the rare second album that, despite new self-consciousness, stretches beyond an unspoiled debut to reach for even bigger things, with all its passion intact”. The Sunday Times said “the mix of detached vocals, lush arrangements and laid-bare post-mortems on love, loss, dysfunction and acceptance is devastating". Baker went on to perform songs from the album on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and CBS This Morning. In 2018 Baker formed boygenius with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus in 2018. The resulting eponymous EP and joint North American tour made for one of the most celebrated and talked about musical communions of 2018, highlighting Baker at the forefront of a burgeoning generation of era-defining artists. For a while, I only had the first verse, which is just a really candid confrontation of the cognitive dissonance a person who struggles with substance abuse can feel– the overwhelming evidence that this substance is harming you, and the counterintuitive but very real craving for the relief it provides.  When I revisited the song I started thinking about the parallels between the escapism of substance abuse and the other various means of escapism that had occupied a similar, if less easily identifiable, space in my psyche.

There are so many channels and behaviors that we use to placate discomfort unhealthily which exist outside the formal definition of addiction. I (and so many other people) are willing to believe whomever– a political pundit, a preacher, a drug dealer, an energy healer– when they promise healing, and how that willingness, however genuine, might actually impede healing.” 

Little Oblivions was recorded in Baker’s hometown of Memphis, Tennessee between December 2019 and January 2020. It was engineered by Calvin Lauber and mixed by Craig Silvey (The National, Florence & the Machine, Arcade Fire). Baker’s tactile guitar and piano playing are enriched with newfound textures encompassing bass, drums, synthesizers, banjo and mandolin, with nearly all of the instruments performed by Baker. The album weaves unflinching autobiography with assimilated experience and often hard-won observations from the past few years, taking Baker’s capacity for starkly galvanizing storytelling to breathtaking new heights.

Little Oblivions is the follow up to Baker’s 2017 sophomore album and first on Matador Turn Out The Lights. The New York Times said the LP is “the work of a songwriter who has resonated with an international audience (…), the rare second album that, despite new self-consciousness, stretches beyond an unspoiled debut to reach for even bigger things, with all its passion intact”. The Sunday Times said “the mix of detached vocals, lush arrangements and laid-bare post-mortems on love, loss, dysfunction and acceptance is devastating”. Baker went on to perform songs from the album on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and CBS This Morning.

In 2018 Baker formed boygenius with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus in 2018. The resulting eponymous EP and joint North American tour made for one of the most celebrated and talked about musical communions of 2018, highlighting Baker at the forefront of a burgeoning generation of era-defining artists.

An intense and immersive performer, her live shows were described by The New Yorker as “…. hushed, reverential. The only sounds you hear between songs are her fingers as she tweaks the tuning on her electric guitar, scattered whispers between friends, and the rustling as the crowd waits patiently for Baker to start strumming again”.

Litte Oblivions

If you are lucky enough to have a future where the present anxieties of distance become romantic memories, I hope there are people who turn this album over in their hands years from now and remember the world it tumbled into. A world that, in whatever future moment exists, will likely be defined by the work people undertook and the fights people continued to show up for. But it will also be a world defined by how many of us exist on the other side of distance.

In the moment, here is a new Julien Baker album that arrives as a world comes to newly understand its relationship with touch, with distance. At the time of this writing, I shouldn’t want to run into the arms of anyone I love and miss, and yet I do. In an era of hands pressed on the glass of windows, or screen doors. An era of hands reaching back. An era where touch became an illusion. If we have been unlucky enough, our own lifetimes have prepared us for the ever-growing tapestry of aches.

To wrestle with the interior of one’s self has become a side effect of the times, and will remain a side-effect of whatever times emerge from these. The first time I ever heard Julien Baker, I wanted to know how an artist could survive such relentless and rigorous self-examination. I have been lonely, I have been alone, and I have been isolated. There are musicians who know the nuances between the three. What whispers in through the cracks of a person’s time alone. Julien Baker is one of those artists. A writer who examines their own mess, not in a search for answers, but sometimes just for a way out. A lighthouse to some newer, bigger mess.

It is hard to put into words what this feels like. Little Oblivions is an album that steps into that feeling and expands it. Sonically, from the opening swells of sound on ‘Hardline’ rattling the chest, loving but persistent jabs to the way ‘Relative Fiction’ spills into ‘Crying Wolf,’ which feels like speeding down a warm highway that quickly turns into a sparse landscape, drowning in a hard rain. Lyrically, too, of course. There are writers who might attempt to bang at the doors of their listeners, shouting their particular anguish of the hour. And there are undoubtedly times when I have needed that to get from one sunrise to the next. But there are also writers who show up assuming anyone listening already knows what it is to crawl themselves back from one heartbreak, or to shout into an enduring darkness and hear only an echo. Little Oblivions is an album that details the crawling, details the shouting. An album that doesn’t offer repair, or forgiveness. Sometimes, though, a chance to revel in the life that is never guaranteed. Yes, the life that grows and grows and is never promised. How lucky to still be living, even in our own mess.

The grand project of Julien Baker, as I have always projected it onto myself, is the central question of what someone does with the many calamities of a life they didn’t ask for, but want to make the most out of. I have long been done with the idea of hope in such a brutal and unforgiving world, but I’d like to think that this music drags me closer to the old idea I once clung to. But these are songs of survival, and songs of reimagining a better self, and what is that if not hope? Hope that on the other side of our wreckage – self-fashioned or otherwise – there might be a door. And through the opening of that door, a tree spilling its shade over something we love. A bench and upon it, a jacket that once belonged to someone we’d buried. Birds who ask us to be an audience to their singing. A small and generous corner of the earth that has not yet burned down or disappeared. I can be convinced of this kind of hope, even as I fight against it. To hear someone wrestling with and still thankful for the circumstances of a life that might reveal some brilliance if any of us just stick around long enough.

Julien, how good it is to hear you again. And now, in all of our anguish and all of our glory. I miss the way the outside world reflected myself back to me. Now, I make mirrors out of the walls. I am so thankful for a better noise than the howling of my own shadows. Julien, you have done it again. You expert magician. You mirror-maker. Thank you for letting us once again watch you maneuver through all of your pleasant and unpleasant self-renderings. If there is a future, there will be people in it who might not remember how this album came at a time when so many hungered for a chance to put themselves back together. When the imagination of a person, a city, a country, was expanding. When, despite all of that, in the quiet moments, there were people who still wanted to be held by someone they maybe couldn’t touch. Thank you, Julien, for this comfort. This glass box through which a person might better be able to see a use for their own grief. This kingdom of small shards of sunlight, stumbling their way in to disrupt the darkness.

Earlier this year, Korea’s masters of moving and shaking, Wedance (위댄스) shared their latest LP Dance Pop with the world. Unlike any other releases of theirs, however, the album marked a momentous occasion in the band’s history as their first ever material to be available digitally. The prolific duo have always prided themselves on maintaining this idea of a musical scavenger hunt, only ever offering their music on limited edition runs of CDs handed out at their live shows. This transformation to the digital realm sparked an exciting new way of connecting with fans both at home and throughout the world, and would eventually catalyse the band’s imminent ‘Danceparty at Your Fingertips’ digital Australian tour. In celebration of their upcoming trip to our virtual shores this month, Wedance are thrilled to reveal a new video for their beloved Dance Pop single ‘Ironism’.

Bringing together a group of friends, misfits and oddballs, the video is a perfect encapsulation of a Wedance live show, complete with dancing, bouncing, flouncing and laughing. Though uncharacteristically devoid of any colour, the black and white video is as joyous as it is totally bizarre and proves why the dynamic duo are making waves with their infectious positivity and entirely unique style.

Dancing their way to Australian devices this spring, Wedance will bring their unprecedented energy, charisma and penchant for all things fashion to our virtual shores for a run of special performances across the country. Having previously performed in Australia at the 2016 Aus Asia Festival and the 2018 Bigsound Festival, as well as multiple Festival appearances throughout Asia and the world including Fuji Rock, Primavera Sound, Nuits Sonores, Bug Sounds, Baybeats and more, their upcoming virtual tour is not one to miss.
