Early this year, emerging U.K.-based singer, producer and harpist TATYANA, released her thrilling debut EP Shadow On The Wallvia Sinderlyn, that was praised by tastemaker outlets including NYLON, FADER, office, Line of Best Fit, Crack, and more. Today she releases ‘Back In My Head’ a new single off an evolving mixtape called MELT. Like many of TATYANA’s songs, ‘Back In My Head’ is about the digitisation of romance that is accompanied by soothing, Charli XCX like, auto tune fem vocals.
From TATYANA – “’Back In My Head’ is the first track for a project I have called MELT, which will be a sort of evolving mixtape. I’ll be adding songs to it that fit a certain kind of mood I write from sometimes – darker, minimalist, more experimental. I like to try on different hats so to speak when it comes to making music and not be tethered to a linear approach.
The song itself is quite personal – I was on YouTube late one night and the algorithm posted up a video of someone I used to be involved with. A rush of memories came flooding back, and I realised how much had changed since I had stopped thinking about him. It was such an intense feeling that I just hit record in the studio at 2am, and a stream-of-consciousness lyric came out. It turned a painful moment into something beautiful.”
The Shadow On The Wall EP is a culmination of TATYANA’s impressive first steps. TATYANA lived in Holland, Russia, Singapore, and Boston – where she attended Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship – before settling back in her hometown of London in 2017; the transient nature of her upbringing has certainly informed her music. TATYANA enjoyed a huge swell of praise since releasing her stunning debut single ‘Wild Card’ in March – drawing instant acclaim from The FADER “a lushly produced pop single”,Dork“smooth pop gem” and CLASH“between Kate Bush and Bjork, and Tears For Fears… there’s also something vividly original at work”. From underground raves to viral YouTube covers to playing harp on tour with Neneh Cherry, there seems to be no scene that she doesn’t thrive in. Her new music is a multi-faceted product of all of that experience, the kind of precisely produced, impossibly catchy pop that takes other artists their entire careers to nail.
